Happy 110th Birthday Lorna!

We are honoured to have Old Scholar Lorna Henstridge (nee Paterson, Selwyn 1932) as a treasured member of the St Peter’s Girls’ community! On Thursday, this week (June 6) Lorna celebrated her 110th birthday, making her Australia’s oldest living woman!

Lorna’s incredible journey exemplifies wisdom, grace, and the richness of a life well-lived. Her guiding philosophy? ‘Keep interested in what you’re doing, be active, and keep doing something new all the time for both you and other people.’

In the weeks leading up to her milestone birthday, it was our privilege to spend cherished moments with Lorna, reflecting on the wonderful memories from her time at the School and celebrating the legacy she continues to embody. Her enduring spirit and unwavering enthusiasm serve as an inspiration to us all.

Happy 110th birthday, Lorna! You are a true treasure, and we are immensely grateful for the wisdom and joy you continue to share with us.

Have You Heard There’s a Rumour at St Peter’s Girls?

St Peter’s Girls Junior School is proud to announce its 2024 Musical is Anastasia!
This is a stunning Youth version of the Broadway Musical which has only just this year, been released in Australia. It is quite a coup for us to be one of the first groups to perform this mesmerising show. With vision direct from Broadway, beautiful costumes, and a compelling story, this promises to be one of our best.

Pictured are our some of our leading actors: Airlie McCarthy in the title role of Anastasia; Samantha Paltridge as Dimitry; Elizabeth Sinclair as Vlad; Alyssia Moro as Lily; and Poppy Davidson as Gleb.

There was so much talent to choose from and the girls who auditioned for the roles are to be congratulated on demonstrating one of our key values, courage.

Nutrition and Healthy Habits for Year 12s

As part of our EMPOWHER theme of maintaining healthy habits through Year 12, last Thursday the Year 12 cohort had the opportunity to listen to Old Scholar and Dietician, Alexandra Manson (Kennion, 2016). Alex has almost completed her PhD at Flinders University and coordinates the School Food Research team. She shared insights around wellbeing and food, looking at food as a fuel, and the problems with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to healthy eating guidelines. Alex also discussed how to discriminate between good and bad nutritional advice on social media platforms. The Year 12s were given time to ask a range of questions with topics of sports nutrition, breakfast and female versus male intakes, coming to the fore. It was a great way to lead into our MasterChef Challenge this week in Home Group, where the girls took part in a cooking competition based around a healthy school lunch option. It was a tight timeline to complete the challenge, but all groups plated up delicious lunch options including Smashed Beef Tacos, Thai Beef Salad and Vegetarian/Chicken Cold Rolls. The girls enjoyed themselves and were able to take the focus away from their considerable upcoming assessments for a short period of time.

National Reconciliation Week Reflection

In Week 5, Middle School students participated in various activities for National Reconciliation Week. During one workshop, students were put into small groups and together learnt about Reconciliation Week and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Each activity involved solving unique puzzles while learning about Aboriginal history. These activities allowed everyone to gain a greater understanding of our history and learn the new Acknowledgment. The activities were fun and engaging. It was a great way to learn about reconciliation.

Middle School students had an enjoyable time during National Reconciliation Week. On Tuesday, we attended an extra special library session which had us engaging in exciting activities for Reconciliation Week. These activities included solving intriguing puzzles to unlock keys – adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. We learnt about significant events in Aboriginal history, the new School Acknowledgment, various indigenous words (from many language groups) and more. Students were grouped into small teams, transforming the experience into a communication challenge, and making the discovery of new information fun. The six activities were focused on providing information into Reconciliation Week and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This allowed everyone to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal history and how we can shape the future. A special thank you to Miss Hollis and Miss Mc Bride for organising these engaging and educational activities.

Year 6s Meet Authors and Illustrators at Lumary Lunch

Last Friday, a group of Year 6 students and the Junior School Library leaders, were fortunate to attend a ‘Luminary Lunch’. Each school’s group was seated at a table with an Australian children’s book author or illustrator. Saints Girls enjoyed the company of the vivacious Tania Ingram, who animatedly told us about her writing journey, answered all sorts of questions about being an author, and was kind enough to gift each student a writing notebook. We answered quiz questions about books and had the opportunity to chat with authors and illustrators present at the event. Each school decorated their table and wore related accessories in a style to suit their creator. Our display was based on Tania Ingram’s book ‘The Great Barbie Disaster’ with some look-alikes of the character Aggie Flea coming along to join the explosive fun at a BBQ. Our students were excited that their efforts were rewarded with a ‘Best Table’ prize – winning a selection of new books for the JS Library.

ELC – News from Learning Community 2

St Peter’s Girls’ Early Learners’ Centre has had a long-standing commitment to active Reconciliation and this year’s theme ‘Now More Than Ever’ inspired us to reimagine our reconciliation pedagogies so that we can take even greater steps towards a reconciled future. As educators, we acknowledge our great responsibility alongside families, as role models to the children within our learning communities.

During last week’s National Reconciliation Week celebrations, a display within the foyer of the ELC was created where families’, children’s and educator’s voiced ‘what Reconciliation means to them’. This visual display of voices within our ELC community was a powerful way to promote further conversations and ideas about how to enact change. Below are some of the statements that were displayed:

Piano Recital

Selected students who show outstanding musicianship and confidence are chosen from the Piano Eisteddfod to perform at our annual Piano Recital alongside our guest performer, Vivian Choi Milton. Vivian is renowned for her musical insight in a wide-ranging repertoire, from classical to contemporary works, and she will perform a 30-minute presentation as part of the recital.

Vivian has toured extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, Europe, North America, and Asia as a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. Recent highlights include concerto appearances with the Grammy Award-winning Boston Modern Orchestra Project and the world premiere of Kate Moore’s Piano Concerto “Beatrice”, which was nominated as a finalist for the 2020 APRA AMCOS Art Music Award’s Work of the Year. She has appeared as a recitalist in the Netherlands, Russia, Italy and the US.

First Prize winner of the Maria Yudina International Piano Competition in Russia, Vivian has won top prizes in international piano competitions in Italy, the Netherlands and Bulgaria. Vivian grew up in Sydney before continuing her musical studies in Russia’s Saint Petersburg State Conservatory. Vivian previously taught at the Concordia College Conservatory of Music in New York and currently serves on the piano faculty at University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium.

We are very excited to have Vivian join us as our guest performer for our Piano Recital. Best of luck to all students involved in the Piano Eisteddfod on 13 June and the Piano Recital at 6pm on June 20.

ELC – Erindale Learning and Teaching Evening

Please join us on Tuesday 11 June at 6.30pm for the Erindale Learning and Teaching Evening at the ELC.

To support your child’s transition into our Erindale room in Semester 2, we will be holding an information session. This is an opportunity for you to meet Laura Reiters, the Erindale teacher, as well as some of our Learning Community 2 staff.

During this session, you will have the chance to visit the learning environment that your child will be transitioning into and gain insights into the daily rituals.

Laura will share how you child’s growing independence and development is nurtured and the rich opportunities for learning that are offered. We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child to thrive and reach their full potential.

As this is a formal presentation, we recommend parents/guardians only attend this event.

Out of the Blue Journal 2024

The Out of the Blue Arts Journal is a celebration of our School community’s talented artists, produced entirely by the student committee! The pages contain beautiful paintings, deep and compelling poems, inspiring music and countless other creative endeavours.

We are looking for students from Reception to Year 12, Old Scholars, and staff to submit art for a chance to be featured in this year’s Journal. There are no limits to the type of art allowed, as long as it is an original work.

To enter your artwork, you can place a physical copy in the submission boxes in either the Junior School classrooms or the ones located around the Middle School. Or you can email a digital copy to outoftheblue@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au . For all submissions, please fill out and attach this submission form. Entries close Friday 16 August.

Every year, Out of the Blue opens the opportunity to design the journal front cover. Many of the past designs have featured line drawings, but we hope to see some other creative ideas as well. The only requirement is that it must fit within the square format of the Journal. For inspiration, Editions 1-4 of the Journal are currently on display in the Middle School Library – feel free to look! Cover designs can be submitted in the same way as general submissions by Monday 24 June.

As this year marks the fifth anniversary of the Out of the Blue Arts Journal, which coincides with the School’s 130th anniversary, we hope to see submissions to make this special edition a standout! At Saints Girls, we value the importance of art and creativity, and we hope that through this project, we can continue to share the talent and voices of our community for years to come.

Health Careers Expo – Next Week

On Thursday 13 June, St Peter’s Girls’ School will be hosting a Health Careers Expo for Senior School students.

The Expo seeks to offer our students invaluable insights into the real-world applications and opportunities within the diverse Health field. By partnering students with Saints Girls’ community members, such as Old Scholars and parents, we hope to provide students with access to real world insights into vocational fields to inform these far-reaching decisions.

The Expo is scheduled for Thursday 13 June, from 12.15pm to 1.50pm in the School Gym. Years 7 to 9 will be welcome to attend the Expo during lunchtime.

Selwyn Bake Sale – Next Week!

The Year 10 Selwyn girls are very excited to announce a bake sale that will raise money for The Smith Family on Friday 14 June (Week 7). The Smith Family is a National children’s charity that raises money for disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education to create better futures for themselves.

There will be a range of sweet treats from 50c – $3. Dairy, gluten-free and vegan options are available.

Students from Years 3 to 12 will be able to purchase items directly from the stall at lunch. Cash-only purchases. 

We will be set up at the courts near Chiverton Lawns and we would love to see you there supporting the Smith Family with us!

Kilburn Sausage Sizzle – Next Week!

On Friday 14 June (Week 7), the Year 10 Kilburn Home Group will be selling sausages and drinks to raise money for our House Charity, Treasure Boxes. Treasure Boxes provides vital essentials to families living in disadvantage within our community. We are selling a range of options, with meal deals costing $5, which include a sausage and drink. Sausages with the option of onion are $3, as well as soft drinks (coke and lemonade) and an assortment of juice boxes costing $3 each. Gluten-free bread and vegetarian sausages are also available.

Students from Years 3 to 12 can buy sausages and drinks on the day. We are taking cash-only payments.

The sausage sizzle will be located on Chiverton Lawns, so come down at lunch to support our girls and Treasure Boxes.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisations

Immunisation Information for Parents / Legal Guardians of Year 7 and 10 Students

The SA 2024 School Immunisation Program will be delivered by Eastern Health Authority (EHA) on Tuesday 11 June 2024.

All Year 7 students will be offered:

• 1 dose of the Human Papillomavirus vaccine, Gardasil®9
• 1 dose of the Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough vaccine, Boostrix®

All Year 10 students will be offered:

• 2 doses of the Meningococcal B vaccine, Bexsero® at 2 separate visits (2 months apart).
• 1 dose of the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine, Nimenrix®

Immunisation consent packs were given out at the beginning of the school year with information about the vaccines on offer. It is important that you have read the information supplied in the packs before you give consent for your child to be vaccinated at School. If you did not receive an Immunisation Consent pack from your child, please ask at the Front Office.

Please notify EHA if:

• Your child has already started the above program with another provider
• You wish to withdraw your consent
• Your child’s medical condition has changed

Tips for the day of immunisation:

• Encourage your child to have a good breakfast and recess on the morning of immunisations
• Wear sports uniforms to aid easy access to the upper arm and avoid unnecessarily exposing yourself if clothing needs to be removed/undone
• Encourage your child to keep their arms moving and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Celebrating Reconciliation Round

During Rounds 3 and 4 of IGSSA Sport, Saints and the other IGSSA Schools celebrated Reconciliation Round. This is an important event in the School Sports calendar, as it’s a way for us to acknowledge and celebrate indigenous culture within our sports community.

Our teams came together with the opposition and coaches at the beginning of their matches to say an acknowledgement, recognising we are on Kaurna land and paying tribute to indigenous people, past, present and emerging.

Our girls proudly wore Reconciliation Round ribbons during their matches, showing their collective respect and solidarity with indigenous culture. The games were a demonstration to the spirit of sportswomanship. Every player gave their best effort, demonstrating skill, dedication, and mutual respect.

At the end of each game, a player from the opposition was awarded the Team Spirit Award. Recognising a player who showed compassion, sportswomanship and had a positive attitude towards her teammates, opposition and officials throughout the game.

Overall, we loved being part of this round and being able to show our commitment to celebrating and respecting indigenous culture. Most importantly, the girls represented the spirit of sportswomanship and the values promoted by the Reconciliation Round. Their attitudes not only appreciated the competitive spirit but also the cultural significance of the event, making this round a meaningful and memorable experience.

Saints Hockey on the Rise!

For the first time since 2019, Saints Girls was able to enter two Senior Hockey teams. Hockey Captain and Sports Prefect, Amelia Lucas, rallied the troops and called in some favours to ensure we had enough girls to fill both teams. The girls have also been helping when needed, playing both Senior As and Senior Bs on a Saturday so both teams have enough subs.

Old Scholars Poppie and Liv Goldsmith are coaching the Senior As, with Tash Dinan and our own Mrs Stace (aka The Hype Girl) taking the Senior Bs. The camaraderie and bond the coaches have been able to instil in the girls is wonderful to watch. With the more Senior girls embracing the younger and less experienced players and sharing the knowledge.

Both teams have started the season well, with the Senior As yet to lose a match and the Senior Bs sitting second on the premiership table.

With our Middle and Senior team numbers growing, there has been a push to boost numbers in Junior School. In 2023 and Term 2 2024, we have not had enough to fill a stand-alone Saints Girls team, so have relied on the kindness of opposition schools sharing players with us so our girls can play each week.

However, with Term 3 nominations closing last week, we have 35 girls from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 enrolled in our new Foundation Hockey Program and nine girls from Year 3 to 6 choosing Competition Hockey. This will provide a great opportunity for our Junior School girls to learn the game and ensure we have a strong pathway for our girls as they move into Middle school.

Finally, we have just had our eighth Saints Girl named in a State Team! Congratulations to Antra Docherty for being selected in the School Sport SA 12 and Under State Team and to Claris Stolcman who has been named as a train-on for the Under 16 team (despite still being eligible for Under 13’s!).

They join Amelia Lucas (Under 18’s player and Under 21’s train-on), Matilda Paterson (Under 16’s and Under 18’s), Zara Trim (Under 18’s train-on), Leah Huynh (Under 18’s train-on), Phoebe Lucas (Under 16’s) and Jess Woods (Under 13’s).
