W4 - Swimming Carnival

Swimming Carnival 2019

Swimming Carnival 2019 started off the blocks this morning, with girls in Years 4 – 12 going stroke-for-stroke across the four Houses.

As the humidity rose in the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, so too did the competition. Raw talent was on-show for all to see in the serious races and true colours emerged during the novelty events, with the Crocodile Race proving to be a crowd-pleaser yet again.

House spirit was in overdrive and the Year 12 costumes lived up to all the hype.

By the end of proceedings with all results tallied, the 2019 overall winner was announced: SELWYN!

The McGill Shield
Selwyn 1774 points
Kilburn 1671 points
Patteson 1526 points
Kennion 1382 points

Congratulations to all involved! More detailed results to appear in next week’s Enews.

Congratulations to Old Scholar Julie Bishop

St Peter’s Girls pays tribute to The Hon Julie Bishop MP (Kilburn ’73) as she calls an end to her stunning political career. We thank her for her service to parliament and the people of Australia.

The School is incredibly proud of Old Scholars such as Julie who inspire our girls to chase their dreams and strive to be their very best.

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

W4 - Banner

Term 1 is now well underway and students have settled into their new classes. For the teaching staff, the term started at least a week earlier with a series of training days that focused on, amongst other things, technology in the classroom, project-based learning ideas, assessment practices, developing writing skills in Junior classrooms, and how to best support students with a range of particular learning needs.

Our teachers are always looking to develop, refine and enhance their practice. Many are already booked into various professional learning events taking place through 2019. The annual Growth and Learning Review process requires teachers to set at least two professional goals, referencing the AITSL national teacher standards and with clear success measures. Life-long learners make better teachers and, here at Saints Girls, we embrace this fact.

N Scoggins - webJust a reminder that we now operate the continuous reporting system across Years 7 – 12. This means that you are able to access teacher feedback on myLink as soon as student work has been assessed; you no longer need to wait until the end of the semester for updates on progress. For a quick video recap of how to access the continuous reporting feedback, click here. By regularly visiting these pages, you will be able to read teacher comments on the very latest assignments and these can then prompt meaningful conversations at the dinner table. In most if not all cases, marks will also be translated into grades, which should make the feedback easier to understand and progress through the semester easier to track.

Meet Our Newest Leaders

W4 - Year 6

On Tuesday, our Year 6 students were inducted into their leadership roles for 2019 in a special Chapel Service in front of their families and friends. This was an important occasion and an opportunity for the girls to reflect on the skills and dispositions that they will develop and use during the coming year. They have been thinking about what it is that makes a ‘good’ leader, and they are committed to carrying out their roles to the best of their ability.

Each group of leaders prepared their own mission statement to read out during the service using research from their current Unit of Inquiry around the central idea that ‘Everyone has the ability and opportunity to demonstrate leadership.’ During the service, our SRC Representatives from each class from Reception to Year 5 were also presented with their badges. We look forward to seeing all of these students carry out the responsibilities of their role this year.

From the Kennion House Captain

W4 - Kennion

This week, Years 4 – 12 were lucky enough to finish off the first month of Term 1 with a feature on our school calendar, Swimming Carnival! As it is one of many favourite House events, it is a great way to kick off the year with enthusiastic House spirit.

The action-packed day had a variety of highlights, ranging from the competitive 100 metre medleys to the staff versus student novelty race. As a senior student, my highlight was the crocodile race! When I was in the Junior School, I couldn’t wait to be in Year 7 and finally be able to compete in the most competitive novelty of the day. It is such a fun event as the year level separates into Houses and works as a team to swim two laps of the pool in a conga line – a skill which is surprisingly hard to master!

As a Year 12, I had the exciting perk of continuing one of the Saints’ traditions of dressing up in a House-coloured costume! Every year, the anticipation of a fabulous day is taken to another level when the Year 12s from each House rush into Adelaide Aquatic Centre accompanied with deafening cheering by the rest of the House.

I was extremely excited to lead the Kennionnites this year for my last Swimming Carnival and couldn’t wait to finish off the week with infectious blue spirit!

Music Camp – A Chorus of Support

W4 - Music Camp

Week 3 was an exciting time for the Music Department as more than 100 girls were taken down to the beautiful town of Ardrossan to be involved in another successful year of Music Camp.

The camp is supervised and instructed by a range of the School’s enthusiastic instrumental teachers, Old Scholars and, of course, Mrs Noble, Ms Habel and Director of Music Sally Rounsevell. It runs for four days and allows girls to invest time and energy – distraction free – into their instruments or vocals, whilst being amongst other music students of all ages, and participating in non-music activities like beach walks and frequent visits to the Ardrossan Café.

On Wednesday, students in the School’s Senior ensembles – Enchanté, Esperanza and Stage Band – arrived, and immediately began to rehearse repertoire which will be performed at Generations in Jazz in May. Throughout Thursday and Friday, more Middle and Junior School students arrived to participate in other ensembles. This variety in age generates an incredible sense of community and allows the less experienced girls to learn music techniques and take advice from the senior girls. On Friday afternoon, several soloists, instrumentalists and vocalists, were taken to play to the residents in the Ardrossan Hospital, a music camp tradition which gives the students an incredible opportunity to perform and use their musicality to give back to the community. Finally, after three long days of rehearsing, the girls presented their hard work to a large audience on Saturday afternoon. This concert was a wonderful example of the talent and high musical standard of our School, as each performance was truly outstanding considering the short time to learn the repertoire.

The camp is a fantastic time for the Music Department to become more of a community; it allows girls to create friendships beyond their own year level, and it is an extremely fun and enjoyable experience.

Saints Girls Salute Women’s War Service

W4 - Memorial

On Sunday 17 February, the 77th Bangka Island/Radji Beach Massacre commemorative service was held at the Women’s Memorial Playing Fields in St Marys.

This event is one of the few commemorative services worldwide dedicated exclusively to the service of women in wartime. It was a very moving occasion as attendees were invited to reflect on the heroism and sacrifice of the 21 nurses who were massacred on Radji Beach on February 16, 1942, with only one survivor, Sister Vivian Bullwinkel. These women had already survived their evacuation from Singapore and the subsequent torpedoing of their vessel, the SS Vyner Brooke, forcing them to cover the 10 miles to Bangka Island off Sumatra (modern-day Indonesia) in a ship’s boat. Civilian survivors decided to walk to Muntok, while the sisters stayed with the wounded, although some were severely injured themselves. Found by the Japanese, these women chose to surrender, only to be ordered to march unarmed into the sea as the Japanese opened fire with machine guns.

In this, our 125th year as a School and the 125th anniversary of South Australia granting women the right to vote, it is increasingly important to educate this generation of young women about the outstanding commitment of their forebears, including Ellen (Nell) Keats, a Saints’ Old Scholar and one the massacre’s victims. Current students Dani Cox (Year 7) and Chi Chi Zhao (Year 9) laid a laurel wreath, and the School was presented with a gift of a framed account of how the local population risked their lives to assist Vivian Bullwinkel and a male survivor, English soldier Pat Kingsley.

As teachers, we need to be mindful of not allowing the attention devoted to more commonly recognised commemorative events, such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, to overlook the opportunities to educate our students about aspects of history which have such strong links to our School community. We will endeavour to ensure that events such as the Bangka Island Massacre memorial have due prominence in the consciousness of our students through ongoing involvement and learning.

US Exchange Brings Us Closer Together

W4 - USA Exchange

In January, four Year 10 students travelled to New Jersey, USA to begin their four week exchange at Kent Place School. They were asked to share a little about their experience on exchange, and we look forward to welcoming the girls from Kent Place in the coming weeks!

“I loved every part of my exchange. It was so exciting having the opportunity to travel somewhere so new and different. I especially loved being able to experience American school life and visit places like New York. I hope that I will get a chance to go back sometime in the future.” – Ashley Piper

“My time away will be in my greatest memories forever; this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was nothing like I even imagined; every single part of the trip was absolutely incredible. I loved going to New York and Washington and all of the places that were on my bucket list. I made new friends and new memories that I will never forget. I am so grateful that I was able to apply and go on the exchange and would 100% recommend it to anyone and everyone.” – Olivia Kelly

“My exchange experience was amazing. My host family were really great and showed me as much of America and its culture as possible. Kent Place School was so welcoming and made it easy for us to become a part of their community. I made friendships that will last a lifetime and I cannot wait for the American girls to come to Australia.” – Stephanie Smalls

Triathlon Success!

W4 - Triathlon

Saints entered a record number of participants into the State Secondary Triathlon Championships held at West Lakes. The day started with Gold to Matilda Braithwaite in the U17 girls’ section, earning her a trip to the Gold Coast later in the year.

With nine teams across four age groups, Saints excelled, claiming two Silver and two Bronze medals in the teams’ events.

The senior girls consisting of Hattie Maerschel (Swim), Matilda Braithwaite (Cycle) and Michelle Cheung (Run) finished with Silver. Of the two teams entered in the U17 division, Lara Wakeham (Swim), Ella Waltham (Cycle) and Keeley Fahey (Run) claimed Silver, with Gemma Schaedel (Swim), Saskia Jonats (Cycle) and Bella Parton (Run) finishing in third.

Our strong contingent of five teams in the junior division also faired very well, with teams finishing in 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 11th. Tara Young (Swim), Alexia Politis (Cycle) and Imogen Elliott (Run) won the Silver medal, while our team of Year 7s – Ayla Blaskett (Swim), Ashlyn May (Cycle) and Dani Cox (Run) – finished in a credible 5th place.

Groovy Science Experiment

W4 - Science

Our Year 8s have been getting in touch with their inner chemist this week, making their own lava lamps! As part of the study of elements and compounds in Science, students experimented with mixtures of water, oil, food colouring and alka-seltzer tablets to create their lamps. They made predictions about how the substances would interact when mixed and evaluated their predictions at the completion of the experiment.

BASKETBALL

Open – Saints 54 defeated St Johns 22
The girls played really well in defence, creating a lot of turnovers which allowed for many easy shots in offence. The Middle School girls who were filling in this week played really well with the new team. – Sarah Matheson (Captain)

Middle A – Saints 18 defeated by Seymour 22
Another close game that could have gone either way. The team’s defence was outstanding for the whole game; once again, we missed a lot of opportunities to score, so need to work on the shooting. I thought everyone played well with good intensity against a much taller team. Special mentions to Willow Stewart-Rattray for her work at both ends of the court, and Sophie Ricciuto and Ellie Humphrey for the defence. Well done girls! – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 18 defeated by Seymour 65
A really tough game for the girls against a good team. We started slowly and, unfortunately, were 40 points behind at half-time. Second half, we showed a lot of improvement in being able to score points and keep their scouting down. Special mentions to Emily Elston and Zara Chessell for their efforts rebounding and scoring. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 6 defeated by Pembroke 20
The girls are showing positive signs of improvement in all aspect of the game. We had a much better result this week against Pembroke. Even though we didn’t win, all the girls got involved and tried putting their newly-acquired skills into practice. Two stand-outs were Emily McCorley and Jasreet Mavi, scoring all the points and really showing leadership and direction to the other players. It is nice seeing everyone get involved and everyone smiling and having fun! – Sharnee Jones (Coach)

ROWING

The conditions for this regatta were perfect with no wind and flat, glassy water. The Juniors had training instead with the focus being on many of the basics of the stroke, trying to get the fundamentals correct, the building blocks of the stroke.

Both the Inter A and Bs had a 1500m School Race and then a 1000m School/Club race. The crews are really showing that they will be right up there come HoR, with strong performances in both races. As coaches and with only five weeks until HoR, we are really starting to look at the finer points of technique and the training program to get the girls just right, and I think that we are well on the way.

The Seniors seem to be going along well, and for them, it is very much about getting the process right. Both the 8 and 4 are looking good together and, as I said with the Inters, it’s about getting all the little things right. The 4 who have only really come together this term are doing extremely well, looking really competitive and it will be interesting to see how they progress over the coming the weeks. The 8 is tracking nicely and the coaches are happy with how things are sitting at the moment. – Ben Flannagan (Director of Rowing)

SOFTBALL

Teeball Blue – Saints had a bye

Teeball White – Saints 10 defeated by Walford 14
Most of the girls played their very first game of Teeball. They were focused in the field and, as the game went on, they began to show a good understanding of the rules. Batting well, they scored 7 runs in the last innings to make the final score 10-14. Everyone played well and had fun. Well done girls. – Mrs Noblet

Year 5/6 Blue – Saints 7 defeated by Seymour Blue 9
The girls played a lot better this week and really worked well as a team, getting 7 runs in one inning and back-to-back hits to help each other. There was some distraction near the end of the game when their attention drifted, but they picked it back up after I reminded them. Our hitting was good, not swinging at balls, and we had quite a few girls getting to hit off the tee. Our fielding, pitching and catching was good, and once we improve our accurate throws and catching at base, I’m sure a win is not too far away – Steph Collett (Coach)

Year 5/6 White – Saints 6 defeated by Pembroke Green 10
Our first home game did not go as hoped. Our team’s offence started off strong, scoring 4 runs in the first inning, but we were not able to hold them in defence. Januri Wagaarachchi, Anna Venning and Carla Massicci all pitched very well and catchers Alannah Godfrey and Lara Maione each tried catching for the first time and did very well. Although we lost, the team was in great spirits and is very excited to play their next match. – Jess Drewick (Coach)

Year 5/6 Silver – Saints 5 defeated by Seymour Green 10
It was a great effort by the team with some excellent fielding getting 3 out in each innings. Improvement was also shown in throwing to the bases, and the batting was great with players watching the ball and selecting when to swing. Finally, there was some amazing base running and stealing resulting in runs. – Taylah Gabrisch (Coach)

TENNIS

A great start to the Tennis season. With a number of players out, we are grateful to Bella Parton and Emily Baldwinson who filled in at the last minute to help us avoid forfeiting matches.

Premier League – Saints 4-33 defeated Westminster 2-23
Singles: Ruby Deakin 6-4, Maiya Jakupec 5-6, Imogen Nienaber 6-0, Charlotte Staples 4-6

Premier League Reserves – Saints 1-19 defeated by Westminster 5-34
Singles: Georgia Mallick 3-6, Grace Beaumont 3-6, Emily Baldwinson 6-4, Bella Parton 1-6

Junior Division 1 – Saints 6-28 defeated Wilderness Gold 0-7
Singles: Winnie Vartuli 4-2, Alison Francis 4-3, Chloe Richardson 4-0

Junior Division 2 Blue – Saints 4-19 defeated Wilderness 1-5
Singles: Emily Bates 4-1, Eva Chassiotis 4-0, Pollyanna Townsend 0-4, Asha Eaton 4-0

Junior Division 2 White – Saints 3-18 defeated by Pulteney 3-19
Singles: Olivia Reynolds 4-3, Charlotte Thorpe 4-2, Jackie Balasis 1-4, Stella Spalvins 4-2

Junior Division 3 Blue – Saints 1-9 defeated by St Ignatius 4-17
Singles: Lucy Mitchell 1-4, Annabel Keough 0-4, Abbie An 3-4

Junior Division 3 White – Saints 0-2 defeated by St Ignatius 6-23

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Loreto 5
Despite the end result, the girls’ defence skills were strong and made it hard for the opposition to push past the middle of the pitch. This Saints’ team has been moved to the top division of school girls’ touch, which is an excellent achievement for the School, and as a team, we will get stronger once we are more comfortable in this division. In trainings, the team is going to work on attacking near the scoreline and diving. Ehi Oyugbo had a great attempt at scoring but unluckily dropped the ball right on the line. All girls displayed real spirit and are ready to improve each week. Keep up the good work! – Eve Habel

Open B – Saints had a bye

Open C1 – Saints had a bye

Open C2– Saints 3 defeated Gleeson College 1
The C2s had a great start to the year. Some strong rucking from Amelie Eaton and Kellie Bested allowed Maggie Bailey, Bella Parton and Ella Waltham to find space out wide to run through. There is still a lot to improve on such as using some plays close to the line, but the girls are willing to work at training and the results will be seen in coming games – Dan Searle (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 2 defeated by Sacred Heart 5
The Middle As played an excellent first game of the season, eventually going down 5-2 to Sacred Heart. The girls worked hard given there were no subs and in hot conditions. They rucked really well in the first half before the heat and fatigue got to them. It was the first game for both Grace Richards and Willow Stewart-Rattray and both were able to score a try. A focus now is on defence, especially on the wings where we allowed too many openings. – Dan Searle (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 7 defeated Loreto 0
The girls played a good game with a very solid defence, making it difficult for Loreto to break through. Even in the heat, the girls worked hard to get back on-side and forced a number of errors in Loreto’s play which resulted in penalties and ultimately trys being scored. The girls worked tirelessly in attack, rucking smoothly and at pace, driving back the defensive team. They communicated well, using the wings to score number of runs. As they move on to their next game, they will start to focus on bringing in a number of set plays so that they can mix up their attack. An amazing start for the beginning of the touch season; keep up the hard work girls. – Becca Burton-Howard (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 2 defeated by St Ignatius 3
The team played their match at St Ignatius in very hot, humid weather. They worked well in attack by rucking smoothly and pushing the defenders back, tiring them out. Due to the efficiency of our rucking, the opposition were caught off side on a number of occasions, resulting in many penalties. Our team scored the first try of the game in the first three minutes, giving them a good boost of confidence. We were also solid in defence, creating a flat line and going back on-side. Getting back five metres each time quickly put enough pressure on the other team, resulting in a number of dropped balls. We were also very good at communicating to indicate where the gaps were and who to defend. – Becca Burton-Howard (Coach)

WATER POLO

Open A – Saints had a bye

Open B – Saints 2 defeated by Seymour 9
The girls were up against a strong opposition as they were playing in the A grade competition for the first time. Despite this, they entered the pool with confidence and played very well, and fought to the end. They created many opportunities to shoot for goal, and with practice, they should be able to convert more of these opportunities into goals. The best players were Olivia Goldsmith and Georgina Wakeham, who did an amazing job defending Seymour’s top players, limiting their opportunities to score. Well done girls! – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Open C – Saints had a bye

Year 7-8 – Saints 17 defeated St Aloysius 3
With a team of Year 7s all playing their first competitive match, Saints had an amazing game. From the outset, the girls listened to instructions which played immediate dividends, rushing to a 5-0 lead at quarter-time. With strong swimming and teamwork, Saints maintained the pressure at both ends of the pool. An amazing start to the season with much to look forward to. Goals: Mathilda Thomas 6, Marcella Tolley 4, Emily McCorley 2, Ashlyn May 2, Claudia Pearce, Ayla Blaskett and Scarlett Dillon with 1 each. – Neil Fuller (Acting Coach)

Enews – Week 3, Term 1 2019

Issue no. 3Enews-banner

W3 - Banner

From the Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School

The first three weeks of the school year have flown past with a predictable swiftness, with which teachers and students are quite familiar. Whilst school life does follow a very routine pattern, the variety of events that occur on a day-to-day basis always ensure the weeks pass extraordinarily quickly. I have appreciated the amount of enthusiasm and energy the girls have returned with and have been impressed with the level of focus already being demonstrated by the senior students.Kate Mortimer

I spoke to the girls last week about the need to review their habits and to consciously make a decision to ‘call out’ those that inhibit their potential for success. We live in a world where distractions are far too common and attention spans are shrinking. This is of course in direct contrast to what is required for deep learning and thought. I encourage all of our girls to make the choice to ‘work with intent’ in the time that they set aside to complete homework and study. It is often quite revealing how much can be completed when one has the right intent.

#EMPOWHER – Update

While 2019 brings the second year of delivery of our #EMPOWHER wellbeing program in the Middle and Senior Schools, last Friday saw the launch of our Junior School program. From this point forward, all of our girls across Reception to Year 12 will receive a comprehensive wellbeing curriculum. Much work has been completed by the Junior School staff to ensure this program is detailed, relevant and engaging. The content has been developed around survey results collected from our girls and utilises a range of evidence-based resources.

For an overview of the topics being covered across Reception to Year 12 this term, click here.

I encourage you to take the time to look over what your daughter will be exploring. The most successful wellbeing programs are those in which the School and parents work in partnership.

Paul de Gelder – IMPROVISE. ADAPT. OVERCOME.

I am pleased to announce that our #EMPOWHER guest speaker for this year is Paul de Gelder. Paul is an ex-Navy diver, shark attack survivor, author and motivational speaker. In 2009 while completing a dive in Sydney Harbour, he was attacked and consequently lost his right arm and leg. His story of survival and recovery is certainly one which will provide the girls with the inspiration to overcome challenges that will be an inevitable part of their future. Paul will be talking to all students from Years 6 – 12 on Monday 25 March.

Tutor Program

Finally, the Tutor Program will be commencing next week in the Library and I encourage you to discuss the benefits of using this free service with your daughter. The tutors are young Old Scholars who have specialist areas. Bookings can be made through Canvas, with sessions held each morning and afternoon apart from Monday mornings and Friday afternoons.

Deep Learning at Year 9 Aquatics Camp

W3 - Year 9

Last Thursday and Friday, the Year 9s went on Aquatics Camp. While it was lots of fun, we were also pushed out of our comfort zones and learnt many new skills. We boarded the bus at 8.30 in the morning and everyone was still a little asleep, but as soon as we got into the water, we were all wide awake.

The first day on the River Murray was filled with activities and it was great to get to know everyone in our groups. We had the chance to try sailing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, knee boarding, water skiing, and we even got to test our boat driving skills. Many of us had never tried any of these activities before and it was an amazing experience. Everyone was very supportive of each other and we were all encouraged to give everything a shot.

In the afternoon, we pitched our tents and played some late night games. The next morning, we woke up and had a delicious pancake breakfast and, after finishing up our aquatic activities, we headed back to school.

Aquatics Camp was an unforgettable experience.

Dance Class Steps Back in Time

W3 - Dance

This week, guest Dance teacher Joe Meldrum ran a Bob Fosse jazz workshop for the Year 10 students. It was a blast from the past for me personally, as I had taught Joe co-curricular Dance lessons at Westminster School while he was a senior student. After completing the course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Joe has since worked on many musicals with the Melbourne Production Company and is leaving for Sydney this weekend to perform at the Opera House in West Side Story. Having only trained in Dance at his school, Joe’s professional journey and experiences inspired the girls. – Kate Burnett, Head of The Arts

“I really enjoyed exploring the work of Bob Fosse as he has greatly influenced the jazz and musical theatre industries. Due to his unique style, I was pushed out of my comfort zone and had an opportunity to explore new techniques and body movements. I really enjoyed learning the original choreography from All That Jazz as it was very precise and detailed. The workshop was great fun and I am glad that I had the opportunity to participate and experience new things.” – Sophie Aplin, Stage 1 dancer

Our ‘Seat of Encouragement’ will be a striking feature in our new Science Centre. Located on the second level between the four general laboratories, the seat will be accompanied by individual tiles, recognising donors who contribute to this unique St Peter’s Girls’ Foundation campaign.

We invite current/past parents and staff, Old Scholars, friends of the School and local businesses to purchase an expression of encouragement to embolden and inspire our girls.

The St Peter’s Girls’ Foundation raises funds to advance the School’s educational, scholarship and building programs. By purchasing a tile, you will be supporting the learners of today and tomorrow.

All tiles can be personalised and many offer the choice of a motivational quote. They can be purchased via www.trybooking.com/BARQD.

Music Teacher On-Song for Festival Success

W3 - Composing

This year, I was honoured to be asked to compose the commissioned work for the SA Primary Schools’ Festival of Music. It is a 20 minute song cycle, and this year’s theme is ‘Adelaide and her 5 Sister Cities’. The work is entitled Dear Pen Pal. Each song in the cycle represents a different sister city with its unique culture and musical style.

The song cycle will be performed by over 5000 students at the Festival Theatre in August. The 10 concerts held over 10 nights will involve a student orchestra, drama troupe and a 500-strong choir every night. It’s estimated that around 12,000 children will be involved in the festival from over 250 schools across South Australia.

Last week, the Festival of Music kicked off with a choir trainers’ conference, with 300 trainers and teachers attending. I was asked to share with them my thoughts on the song cycle and then had the pleasure of hearing them sing the work in harmony and full voice.

Welcome Drinks on the Lawns

W3 - Welcome2

Last Friday night had to be our biggest turnout for our annual ‘Welcome Drinks on the Lawns’, proudly hosted by our Parents’ and Friends’ Association. It was great to see so many new parents, returning parents and staff enjoying themselves and grooving the night away with tunes supplied by our DJ.

A massive thank you to ELC parent Luke from Chesini House who partnered with the team at Mercato to supply us with the most delicious wood-fired pizzas. We’d also like to thank wonderful Year 4 parent Makeeley from Little b Catering Co. for supporting us with some amazing cheese platters. A big shout out and thank you to all the P&F volunteers, the Property Services team and staff, and of course, our Year 12 girls who all helped to ensure a terrific night.

We are truly grateful for how the community has come together to celebrate the start of the School’s 125th anniversary year. We look forward to seeing you all again on Sunday 24 February at The Garden of Saintly Delights.

SCHOOL SPORT

Nominations are now open for a range of State Primary and Secondary Schools’ teams including:

  • 12 and under girls’ Football (Soccer)
  • 15 and under Volleyball
  • 18 and under Golf

Details can be found here.

BASKETBALL

Open – Saints 39 defeated Scotch 18
The team played an excellent opening game. The girls played hard offence and defence, leading to a great victory. They worked very well as a team, especially considering that some girls had never played before. – Sarah Matheson (Captain)

Middle A – Saints 20 defeated by Scotch 24
Being the first game of the year, it took the girls a little while to get used to their teammates and gain confidence, so we fell behind in the first half. In the second half, the girls really picked up defensively and forced a lot of turnovers. Unfortunately, we were not able to capitalise on these as we missed several shots. Everyone contributed really well and it was a good start to the term. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 14 defeated by Scotch 15
Very similar to the A grade game with the girls taking a half to get into the match. Many were playing their first game of basketball but improved as the match wore on. From 10 points down, we almost stole the win. There is a lot to look forward to this term. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle C1 – Saints 4 defeated by Seymour 48
The girls’ first game was very positive considering many haven’t played before. We came up against Seymour who are a very good side. The first-game players were nervous but soon settled in and played a top team game. While we only scored 4 points, the girls still had fun which is the main thing. – Sharnee Jones (Coach)

Middle C2 – Saints 30 defeated by Seymour 50
The second team that played surprised all of us when we scored 30 points against their 50. Everyone was able to have a go at shooting the ball and even dribbling. – Sharnee Jones (Coach)

LACROSSE

Congratulations to Millie Wilkin who has been selected in the South Australian U18 State Lacrosse to play in Perth over Easter.

ROWING

Saturday 9 February was the first School Premiership Series regatta. Conditions weren’t ideal for rowing with strong winds making the course quite rough and very unpredictable. It was probably at its worst when the Juniors rowed, but to their credit, they stuck at it and gave it their all. The pleasing thing was seeing that many of our Junior crews handled the weather well which demonstrates their technique is coming along nicely. I am hoping that this will set a good base for the rest of the season leading into Head of the River.

The Inter girls are showing great promise and have been training hard, which is reflected in their results on Saturday. The B quad had a couple of their girls missing, so some Juniors came up who were rowing a longer distance than they would normally race. Despite that, they showed really good intent and rowed well together, and I believe the results will start rolling for them over the next few weeks. The Inter As had a consistent heat finishing 4th fastest but then came out and showed the other schools that they are going to be a force by winning the A final. Overall, I’m really happy with how the girls are performing and preparing themselves for racing.

The Seniors had an interesting day with the 8 having mechanical problems in their heat which is very hard to come back from, and our 4 missing their start for their heat. In saying that, the 8 had a really good row in their final to finish 4th, and this is despite the seating in the boat not being exact at the moment. The 4 rowed in the B final but actually had the same time as the fastest from the A final, so with all the things that could have thrown the girls off, they actually came out of the day in a positive fashion.

I am really looking forward to seeing all girls improve and hopefully by HoR and the end of the season, they can look back and have nothing but good, fun memories. – Ben Flannagan (Director of Rowing)

Seniors: Both the 1st IV and the 1st VIII performed well in their finals. It was good to see where all crews are at and to have a high level of competition out on the river. We can now take away technical faults that can be improved upon and we look forward to seeing how the next regatta goes. – Amy Carrodus (Captain)

10A Rowing: In very tough conditions, the Year 10 crew consisting of Portia Maerschel, Anda Ceplite, Keely Flannagan, Sophie Barr and Jodi Papendorf, had a difficult race, placing third in the heat. This qualified us for the A final. Passing all the crews, the girls worked hard, overtaking Walford and placing first. Very proud of them all. – Jodi Papendorf (Cox)

SOFTBALL

Year 5/6 Blue – Saints 3 defeated by Seymour Blue 14
The team tried hard and we will focus on skills including knowing where to throw once the ball’s been hit and encouraging each other as they pitch/field/hit. There were some positive signs in hitting the ball and only swinging at strikes. It was a good effort for the first game, and it looks like it will be fun to teach the girls to love the sport. – Steph Collett (Coach)

Year 5/6 White – Saints 9 defeated Wilderness 1
Our first game against Wilderness was excellent. The girls came out excited and ready to play and were very supportive of each other throughout. Kate Thomas and Anna Venning were great at pitching, with the defence making solid plays. Everyone in the batting line-up hit very well and there was lots of excitement. Everyone is looking forward to our next game. – Jess Drewick (Coach)

Year 5/6 Silver – Saints 3 defeated by Pembroke Green 11
For the first game of the season, I was very proud of the girls. They showed some great batting technique, watching the ball. In our first fielding innings, we managed 3 quick outs. Special mention to Aurelia Pyne who did an awesome job at pitching for the first time. – Taylah Gabrisch (Coach)

Teeball Blue – Saints 18 defeated by Seymour 21
A great start to the term and despite not claiming the win, the girls worked hard and used their skills from training. Best player goes to Charlotte Catchpole who played a terrific innings on 1st base and Iris Ran who stopped some ground balls at 2nd base. – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Teeball White – Saints had a bye

SWIMMING

We wish Grace Sampson (Year 12) the best of luck as she travels to compete in the Victorian Open Long Course swimming competition this weekend

TENNIS

The Tennis season got underway with trial games against Seymour College. With a young squad all stepping up into higher grades, Saints had a focus on how they played rather than the results. All girls looked very competitive against a strong Seymour team and we are hoping for continued improvement throughout the season.

Premier League – Saints 3-25 defeated by Seymour 3-27
Singles: Mia Dodd 6-4, Ruby Deakin 4-6, Maiya Jakupec 1-6, Annabel Baldwinson 6-3

Premier League Reserves – Saints 2-17 defeated by Seymour 4-30
Singles: Imogen Nienaber 2-6, Charlotte Staples 1-6, Georgia Mallick 3-6, Tahlia Louca 6-1

Enews – Week 2, Term 1 2019

Issue no. 2Enews-banner

W2 - JS #EMPOWHER Launch_eNews

#EMPOWHER Junior School Launch

This year, we are extremely pleased and proud to be launching the new Junior School #EMPOWHER wellbeing program. While we have always supported our students through the delivery of wellbeing programs, it was time to look closely at what we provided and ensure it indeed matched the needs of our current students. We undertook extensive research, surveying our students, analysing Australia-wide data and reviewing a number of evidence-based wellbeing programs and resources. After formulating the scope and sequence, teachers began writing lesson content in readiness to deliver from the beginning of this year.

Our new R – 6 #EMPOWHER program is strengths-based with a major focus on developing resilience and expanding students’ emotional vocabulary, and it embodies the best of the best that is available. It consists of a number of core components, carefully mapped to ensure a continuous program that flows seamlessly from one year to the next.

The ‘Bounce Back’ program, written by doctors Toni Noble and Helen McGrath, will underpin a large part of #EMPOWHER from Reception to Year 5.

Students will progressively learn skills and strategies around:

Core values and social values
People bouncing back
Courage
Looking on the bright side
Emotions
Relationships
Being safe
Success

Year 6 students will use aspects of the ‘Personal Wellbeing Lessons for Secondary Schools’ by Ilona Bonniwell and Lucy Ryan. The themes they will study and practise include:

Positive self
Positive emotions
Positive mindsets
Positive direction
Positive relationships

Alongside this, our younger students will learn through Kimochis – which is Japanese for ‘feelings’. Kimochis are a playful way to help children learn how to identify and express feelings. They help to develop and expand the range of emotional vocabulary children understand and use. When children can communicate their feelings effectively by using more fine-grained language, they can more easily develop positive social skills that lead to lasting friendships and success in all aspects of life.

Along with these elements, for all students from Reception to Year 6, a really important part of our program is the inclusion of a neuroscience aspect through online video-based tutorials and accompanying classwork. We are using ‘Braingrow’ as our tool for this component. Devised by Australian clinical psychologist Dr David Collins, it uses the latest neuroscience research to provide students with a range of tools to improve social, emotional and educational learning.

All students will also be exposed to strengths-based language and attitudes, and ‘VIA Character Strengths’ will be incorporated through distinct lessons as well as being embedded across the curriculum.

This morning, the Reception to Year 6 girls participated in the launch of our #EMPOWHER program. They received an #EMPOWHER journal, a bespoke resource written by us here at the School, in which they will record their learning this year. They were also offered a celebratory #EMPOWHER cupcake.

We look forward to sharing our journey with you.

Young Old Scholars Reflect on Time at Saints

W2 - Old Scholars

We recently welcomed three young Old Scholars back to the School to reminisce about their time here.

Olivia Compare (Kilburn ’18) is taking a gap year and plans to study a Bachelor of Business Management and Accounting at the University of Adelaide next year; Sophie-Louise Shearwood (Kilburn ’17) is current at the University of Queensland studying a Bachelor of Science (Biophysics) and Doctor of Medicine; and Ally Murray (Kennion ’16) is in her second year of a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Adelaide.

It was great to have them sit down and chat in the new Library about their shared and individual experiences at Saints Girls. Check out the video to hear what they had to say!

Concrete Progress on New Science Centre

There’ve been some concrete developments with our Science Centre build – literally! A concrete pour took place yesterday, much to the delight of some of our Junior School girls who were fascinated by the process.

This fantastic project is on track to be completed by the start of Term 4, coinciding with our 125th anniversary. The pool upgrade including new change rooms is also coming along swimmingly and should be ready within weeks.

From the Head Prefect

W2 - Head Prefect

As Week 2 comes to end, we are now settling in to the school year. The days spent relaxing on the beach are now swapped with countless learning opportunities within the classroom; opportunities which enable growth and development within us as students of St Peter’s Girls.

The 2019 Prefect Team is also embarking on a new chapter. In order for all students to flourish in this unique environment, each term, an exciting initiative led by a theme will be introduced to the School. This term, in line with one of our core values of compassion, we have launched ‘Keep it Kind’ – a focus on kindness. Term 1 is notorious for being busy and sometimes even overwhelming. Hence, we as a Prefect Team designed a strategy for each individual girl to remember important factors such as supporting one another, being empathetic and, most significantly, showing kindness – factors that are occasionally forgotten around competitive spirit. Constantly being surrounded by others is a perfect time to recall a simple message of ‘keeping it kind’ so Saints Girls can continue to work together in a harmonious and cohesive environment.

This initiative will be extremely helpful during Term 1 as we embark on two major House events: Choral Night and Swimming Carnival. Easily the two most talked about events amongst the students, both activities are a great opportunity for individuals to step out of their comfort zone. Choral Night is a fabulous evening where teamwork, persistence and creativity are showcased, while Swimming Carnival also encourages House spirit, togetherness and courage.

This exciting year is filled with so many new opportunities, beginning with a fabulous, energising term.

Happy Chinese New Year!

W2 - Chinese New Year2

Members of our Chinese community welcomed in the Golden Pig Year with dumpling-making in the ELC and the School this week.

A dozen parents came with dough and fillings to show staff and students how to make dumplings right from the beginning. They fed over a hundred girls and staff with four different flavours and various sauces.

Spring Festival is the most important holiday for Chinese families to have a family reunion. This is a special time for families to meet, reflect on the past year and plan the new year. It is also the time that most of our international students will miss their families back in China. A few weeks ago, local parents here decided to celebrate with them by making dumplings to help ease the homesickness. Some girls from Hong Kong mentioned that this was the first time they had experienced dumpling-making and that it was wonderful to experience different aspects of Chinese culture.

Chorus of Support at Music Camp

W2 - Music Camp

Once again, the Music Department will make its pilgrimage to Ardrossan for Music Camp. This year, more than 130 girls from Years 5 to 12 have been invited, and we look forward to sharing all that we learn over the three days in our eighth Music Camp Concert which will be held at 2pm on Saturday 16 February at Ardrossan Town Hall. Family and friends are welcome to drive up for the afternoon. Tickets are $10 and funds raised will go directly to the local hospital to purchase extra resources and lifestyle facilities such as BBQs, plants and even chickens. Over the past eight years, we have raised almost $7000 for the residents of the aged care facility in the hospital, and each year, we take a small group of girls to perform for the residents as part of our Service Learning component at camp.

Ardrossan has won the award for the best small town in South Australia, and the National judging for that category happens to be on 15 February. The judges will be in the Town Square at 11am. We will be doing our part by performing on Friday morning just as the judges walk down the main street. We hope our Concert Band will add that little bit of sparkle to help the town get across the line and win this prestigious award.

We love travelling to Ardrossan every year and feel very welcomed by the residents of this wonderful community.

All individual, ID and class photos for R – 12 students will be taken on Monday 11 February and Tuesday 12 February. Your daughter’s Home Group teacher has been advised of their time. ELC photos will be taken in March along with catch up individual photos for students who are absent.

Photo order envelopes have been distributed to students, and will need to be completed and returned to the photographer on the day. If you have not received a personalised envelope for your daughter, please notify the Community Relations Office via fmcgregor@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au.

Students are also reminded to wear their full summer uniform including the blazer.

Sibling photos will be taken on Monday 11 February at lunch time. UK Trip of a Lifetime

W2 - UK Exchange

For around four weeks of the summer holidays, 8 January – 3 February, I was on an exchange at Sherborne Girls in England. I stayed at the school boarding house named ‘Dun holme’, which was located near the main building and other blocks. Each floor was designated for different year levels and contained individual rooms called cubis. Being around the girls from my boarding house, especially those in my year 24/7, gave me the chance to interact and get to know them better.

The everyday school life in many ways is similar yet also different to here; classes run from 8.30am to 4.30pm, fitting in six lessons a day (with the exception of Saturdays where there are three lessons). There are socials with the boys’ school on Saturday evenings and abbey services on Sundays.

During my stay, the Sherborne girls had an exeat weekend, however ours was extended to four days since I was on exchange. Through Eliza, my exchange,  I visited London, Salisbury and Oxford. In London, we enjoyed many tourist attractions including a boat tour on the Thames, going on a cable car, visiting Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Parliament House, the National Gallery, London Eye, Tower Bridge, Madame Tussauds and Big Ben. We also shopped at Covent Gardens and Oxford Circus. Along with five Tasmanian and three South African exchanges, I was also taken on day trips to a nearby town, Bath, where we visited the Fashion Museum and Roman baths and went to Stonehenge.

It was rainy and cold for the majority of the exchange and, on my last two days, it even snowed, which was very fun as I had snowball fights and built a snowman with the other girls. Though I may not miss the weather, I wish I could have stayed for longer as it was a very enjoyable and educational experience. I would strongly recommend this for future Year 9 students as it is a trip of a lifetime where you are able to obtain many important skills and develop lasting friendships.

The Addams Family Auditions Impress

W2 - Auditions
What a fun way to start the year, choreographing and teaching some kooky, spooky, jazzy, moves for The Addams Family auditions this week. Miss Rounsevell, Mrs Burnett and Mrs Kitching were blown away by the talented students who turned up. Each girl learned and performed choreography and sung the opening of When You’re an Addams, giving us all an exciting introduction to what lies ahead. The performing arts are very familiar to some, and they come with a wealth of experiences and training. However, I was so impressed by every girl’s eagerness to step out of her comfort zone and try new things. The stage was filled with students helping one another, practising in the wings and even accepting the challenge of dancing while singing – the ultimate challenge in such a short time! The energy in the Arts Centre was supportive and positive and I’m so very excited to see what these talented students are capable of over the next two terms. If the auditions are any indication of the quality of this production, our audience has a lot to look forward to!

Morticia and Gomez, along with the rest of their kooky family and friends, will be dancing up a storm in the Arts Centre every Tuesday from 3.45 – 5.30pm beginning next week! They will be perfecting their pitch and defining their diction during lunch every Friday.

Inspired Performance by Old Scholar Sarah Brownridge

Inspired_eNews

Over the past six or so months, I have been putting my heart and soul into my very first Adelaide Fringe show. At first, I struggled to find something to focus on, and then it hit me…music! So with that in mind, I began writing, drafting, and organising. Now, finally it’s done, ready to go, and I couldn’t be more nervous, proud or excited. Fresh, vibrant, yet sensitive, my show Inspired honours women in the music industry who have used their art to ‘inspire’. Accompanied by the amazing Mike Bevan, together we transform some of the most popular hits including Madonna’s Get Into the Groove, Whitney’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi – just to name a few, to suit the intimate bar setting. I would love to see you there!

ROWING

Seniors: The Senior girls performed very well on the weekend, coming away with a win and many placings. We had some fun rowing in combinations of fours with one combo of Neve McCormack, Hannah Keough, Rachel Kameniar and Sarah Carrodus going hard out and recording a very convincing win! The 1st VIII proved to be in a good place, finishing 2nd in the U19+ division. It was good to see where all crews are at and we are looking forward to the next regatta. – Amy Carrodus (Captain)

Year 9A: The Year 9 crew consisting of Molly Bond, Portia Maerschel, Keely Flannagan, Sophie Barr and Jodi Papendorf worked extremely hard throughout a very tough 1500m race, placing 2nd in the heat and qualifying for the A Final where we placed 3rd. We will be working very hard on technique and strength leading up to Head of the River in March. – Jodi Papendorf (Cox)

Enews – Week 1, Term 1 2019

Issue no. 1Enews-banner

W1 - 125 Assembly

From the Principal

Welcome to the start of the 2019 school year, a year in which this wonderful School celebrates its 125th anniversary. It’s a year in which we reflect on the incredible courage, creativity and compassion of our founding Sisters, and give thanks for their unwavering commitment to quality girls’ education. Our 125th year was officially launched at an inspiring Assembly on Wednesday. Burnside Mayor, past staff member and Old Scholar Anne Monceaux (nee Harrington, Kennion ’66) was our special guest and the girls also received a video message from another notable Old Scholar, The Hon Julie Bishop MP (Kilburn ’73). The festivities burst to life with delightful music, confetti cannons and a shower of blue and white balloons. It is indeed a special time to be a Saints Girl. There are many wonderful events planned throughout the year, one of which will be the 125th Anniversary Ball to be held at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 19 October. Please mark this date in your diary. It’s going to be a fantastic evening where we celebrate all that makes Saints Girls so unique, and I’d love to see you there.

Turning 125 doesn’t make us great. We’re not great because we’re old. Quite the opposite; we’ve managed to grow old because we’ve been great – great at preserving what Saints Girls has been and has stood for across the past 125 years, yet evolving to meet the demands of changing times. We have a proud history of embracing thoughtful change whilst affirming our core values of courage, creativity and compassion in ways that fulfil this extraordinary School’s enduring promise to its girls. ‘Continuous improvement’ can’t just be a catchphrase. It must be a genuine focus if the School is to thrive for another 125 years. Any successful organisation seeks honest and constructive feedback from its stakeholders. As such, we will be seeking feedback from our parents, staff and girls via an online survey in the weeks ahead. Please take the time to complete the survey and play your role in the formulation of the School’s next Strategic Plan.

#EMPOWHER

The School’s unique, evidence-based wellbeing program was introduced into the Middle and Senior Schools last year. Reflecting the timeline outlined in the current Strategic Plan, the Junior School #EMPOWHER program will be launched at Assembly next week. It’s imperative that we adopt a whole-school approach, and we’ll continue to develop parent resources so that you can follow up on these important issues at home.

Staff News

We welcome a number of new staff to Saints Girls:

• Garth Coulter commences in the role of Head of IT and eLearning
• Elizabeth Mitchell joins the Junior School and will teach Year 3
• Chris Carey and Thomas Barclay join the Science staff
• Vicki Dent will teach PE and Nutrition
• Flor Groenen, Grace Le and Matthew Houston join the Languages Department
• Cathy Wang and Emily Downie join the team of co-educators in the ELC
• Allyssa Gepp joins the Tuck Shop staff
• Harry Simpson joins the School’s amazing Property Services team

Your daughter’s Home Group teacher remains your first point of contact with the School. They will be in touch with you in the first few weeks of term. Please don’t hesitate to contact them should you have any queries in the meantime. Don’t forget that you can access your daughter’s timetable and contact staff via the links available on the myLink parent portal. Parents of girls in Years 7 to 12 should also click on the ‘marks’ icon for each subject regularly to see the results and detailed feedback on the most recent assessment tasks. Please contact the IT Department on 8334 2227 if you are experiencing difficulty accessing myLink.

Absence from School

Schools are required under the Education Act 1972 (SA) and the Education (Compulsory Education Age) Amendment Act 2007 to ensure that students enrolled at the school do attend school and participate in the learning program. Whilst I accept there are things such as family emergencies and opportunities for girls to participate in various competitions, sporting and otherwise, that necessitate absence from School, the booking of family vacations during term time is not something the School can support. Of the 365 days in 2019, 186 are designated school days – just 51% of the year! In order to maintain the continuity of your daughter’s education, it’s important that she attend all 186 of those days. Applications for leave from school should be sent to the relevant Head of Sub-School. Applications seeking leave for family holidays during term time will not be approved. Term dates for 2019 and 2020 are available on myLink and it would be appreciated if you could check these dates prior to booking vacations.

Building Works

As you can see, the building works have progressed over the holidays. The new changerooms on the northern side of the pool should be completed part way through this term. The new Science Centre remains on track to open by the start of Term 4 this year. As building works continue, girls in the Middle and Senior Schools are encouraged to meet their parents in the surrounding streets, thereby limiting the volume of traffic entering the school grounds. Please be aware that there is no right hand turn into or out of the entrance to the car park at any time of the day – even when you think no one is looking!

Traffic Flow and Pick-up Procedures

Still on traffic arrangements, this year, Reception classes will conclude at 3pm and Year 1 classes will finish at 3.15pm. The girls, accompanied by their teacher, will walk to the designated pick-up zone. Parents will be able to drive through and collect their daughters. In order for this to work effectively, it’s imperative that all drivers are aware of the following:

• Only those collecting Reception and Year 1 students will have access to the pick-up zone prior to 3.30pm in the afternoon. Year 1 parents should not arrive prior to 3.15pm.
• Drivers must not leave their car in the drop-off/pick-up zone. If your daughter is not in the designated area when you arrive to collect her, you must find legal parking before exiting your car and coming to look for her.
• Senior staff will be on duty. If you are asked to move on, please do so. It may be necessary to circle the block and rejoin the pick-up line.
• Girls must always enter or exit from the passenger side of the vehicle.
• Our girls’ safety is paramount and hence each driver’s full attention is required. Please refrain from talking on your mobile phone whilst using the drop-off/pick-up zone.
• Out of consideration for others in line, girls should ‘load up’ quickly, allowing traffic to move smoothly through the zone.
• Always drive as far down the zone as possible to prevent traffic queuing behind you.
• As girls in Years 2 to 12 need time to pack their belongings and make their way to the car park, it is recommended that parents do not arrive prior to 3.35pm.

Your adherence to the above guidelines is much appreciated.

Have a fantastic first term and I look forward to seeing you at our two big community events in the coming weeks – P&F Drinks on the Lawns which will be held next Friday commencing at 7pm, and the Garden of Saintly Delights on Sunday 24 February.

Compassion in Cambodia – Service Learning Trip

W1 - Cambodia Trip

Each year in December, a group from St Peter’s Girls and Prince Alfred College head off on a joint Service Learning trip to Cambodia. After weeks of fundraising and preparations, we were all excited to fly to Phnom Penh to start our adventure.

In the capital, we learnt about the history of Cambodia, the Killing Fields, S21 Prison and Pol Pot’s regime. We then spent five days at New Hope for Cambodian Children Village (NHCC) where the girls assisted with PE and Library lessons. NHCC is a residential village and K – 12 school for 190 children with HIV. The girls worked 1:1 with Year 4s to make reindeer antlers, wrote and taught the children a school song, and painted classrooms and inspirational murals on the walls. We donated $1000 worth of new sports equipment and toys along with a substantial monetary donation following fundraising efforts and a Coles sports promotion.

During the second week, we visited Angkor Wat temples and ‘Apopo’ – an organisation that trains giant rats, ‘HeroRats’, to save lives by detecting landmines in countries such as Cambodia. The girls worked hard constructing three houses with Volunteer Building Cambodia, and provided a nurse to conduct medical clinics in poor villages through fundraising efforts and the donation of medical supplies.

We also boosted the economy of Siem Reap with our night market shopping!

This amazing adventure is life changing; it provides our students with an understanding of living in a developing country with all its disadvantages and, in contrast, an appreciation of their lives and opportunities here in Australia.

Girls Buoyant After Rowing Camp

W1 - Rowing Camp

During January, a large number of girls headed up to Avoca Dell in Murray Bridge for a rowing camp. The week focused on building skill at a high rate to prepare for upcoming regattas. Technique was also a key area, ensuring the girls could move together and row with efficiency.

The camp was a great place for girls to bond with their crews and everyone in the program. It is always one of the highlights of the season and this year proved to be no different.

Saints Girl a Runaway Success

W1 - Running

At the end of Term 4 2018, I attended the Australian All Schools Championships in Cairns, where I competed in the U18 400m and 800m running events. Despite the torrential rain, I was able to run a personal best, and receive second place in the 400m and win the 800m.

At the end, it was announced that team SA accumulated enough points to take home the small state award against WA, Tasmania, NT and ACT.

Extension Strings Extend to Thousands

W1 - Extension Strings2

On 21 December, Extension Strings, directed by Sari Noble, had the pleasure of performing at the annual Paradise Carols held by Influencers Church. We played the beautiful songs What Child is This and Carol of the Bells. For us, this was a professional gig in which we had to assume full responsibility. It was inspiring for us to get to work with other musicians, dancers and tech crew at such an extremely popular event which attracted a crowd of thousands on the night. Each performance was outstanding and the atmosphere was incredibly festive. It was also great to hear and meet Silvie Paladino, one of the greatest female voices in Australia. It was a top night and we hope to do more events like this in the future.

Isabelle Tran – competed in seven individual events and two relays for her club. She qualified for four finals and swam personal bests in all of her heats. Isabelle also won a Silver medal in the girls’ 12 Years 50m Butterfly event.

VOLLEYBALL

It is terrific to hear that Anna White and Georgina Keough (Year 10), and Ruby Deakin and Lucy White (Year 9) have been selected for the Volleyball SA Academy program. It gives young athletes the opportunity to develop into elite volleyball players through a carefully-designed high performance training program. This helps identify and develop athletes who are capable of being chosen for State, National and International teams.
