Food for Thought from Gourmet Guest

This week as part of our #EMPOWHER wellbeing program, we had the privilege of meeting professional nutritionist and ‘food detective’ Rosie Mansfield. She has been the good chef on Channel 10’s popular show Good Chef Bad Chef. Rosie published her debut book Food Hacker in July 2018, in which she explains her philosophy of eating simply by stripping down recipes to the bare essentials. Rosie explained to us the importance of having a healthy body and mind, and shared some useful tips on how to do so, using catchy phrases such as, “Scrolling? Go strolling” to help us remember to put the phone down and do some exercise.

She emphasised the importance of not restricting certain groups of foods, rather controlling our intake of those foods. Her favourite foods are cheese and pizza, so she loves to have a ‘pizza night’ on Fridays and then wake up early on a Saturday morning to go to the gym to ensure that her calorie intake matches calorie expenditure. She also taught us about the different body types and gave examples of famous women with those body types; each healthy, successful and happy. At the end of her talk, we were given the opportunity to ask her some questions, which allowed us to gain a deeper insight into her personal and business life, and learn about nutrition. Rosie explained how through her work, she is able to travel interstate and internationally, meet new people and try new foods, which she loves. Before the talk, she also held some insightful and entertaining cooking demonstrations in the Food Technology Centre.

Rosie inspired us, as students, to eat healthy, have a growth mindset and practise positive self-talk.

On Song with Hugh Jackman

W6 - AGC Hugh

Three lucky Saints Girls are still on cloud nine after having the incredible honour of performing with showbiz legend Hugh Jackman in Adelaide recently. Anushrii Nair (Year 12), Madison McGregor-Simms (Year 11) and Victoria Thorp (Year 10) sang with the Australian Girls Choir in The Man. The Music. The Show.

“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of Hugh Jackman’s world tour and work in such an exciting and professional environment. As the youngest chorister involved, I’m very lucky to have been a part of such an awesome show, and loved being able to share songs and memories with my friends and such a large audience. Working in the performing arts would be my dream job, and this experience showed me what it’s like to be a part of something so big, professional and fun.” – Victoria Thorp (Year 10)

“Hugh Jackman was one of the most amazing and eye-opening experiences I have had! It was a really fantastic learning opportunity to work with such talented staff, whether they be musicians, dancers or even the management team, and we were very lucky to be given different pieces of wisdom! Furthermore, the exposure to show business and all the details and procedures required to run a show, both onstage and behind the scenes, was super engaging and I have learnt many invaluable lessons through this. My highlight was definitely on the last night, when I got to hug Hugh Jackman on stage! It was a moment in my life I will never forget!” – Anushrii Nair (Year 12)

“Performing alongside the one and only Hugh Jackman for five shows at the Entertainment Centre was an incredible experience. One of my highlights was sharing the stage with world-class dancers (not to forget Hugh Jackman!) and learning about the inner workings of a professional production. I would do it again in a heartbeat and it was an experience that I will never forget.” – Maddy McGregor-Simms (Year 11)

Winter Intercol Victory!

W6 - Winter Intercol

Saints Girls have claimed overall victory against Walford to bring home The Winifred Fenner / Bernie Whitington Winter Intercol Trophy.

Walford won the Soccer before Saints evened the ledger in emphatic style with two comprehensive wins in the Friday night football at Payneham Oval in front of a great crowd. Heading into Saturday with three trophies on the line, Saints dominated the Badminton for back-to-back wins and Netball was very close early with Saints prevailing with a 9-3 total. The Hockey finished in dramatic style after Saints drew the Open A and won the Open B, but due to low numbers and needing the support of additional A grade players for the game to proceed, Walford were declared the winners.

Congratulations to all students who represented Saints Girls!

Saints Girls Talk of the Town

W6 - Debating

This year, the Debating season has been highly successful with St Peter’s Girls nominating 11 teams in the the Debating SA competition. As the season comes to a conclusion, it is terrific that we have one team from each year level into the Quarter Finals.

This is truly a fantastic effort and a testament to the dedication of our debaters and student coaches. The girls have tackled difficult topics with expertise and faced challenging competition from the other schools, ending the season with fantastic argumentative skills.

We wish the five teams competing in the Quarter Finals the best of luck and congratulate all girls for a great year!

Kennion House Dinner

W6 - Kennion House Dinner

Earlier this month the Kennion girls took a step back in time to travel ‘Through the Ages’ of fashion. Dating all the way back to the 60s with knee high boots and mini dresses, to the 2000s with the return of low rise jeans paired with double denim, it was a wonderful night enjoyed by all.

A barbecue dinner, games and a playlist filled with old school classics completed the night, as well as some incredible efforts by the staff and parents!

Fundraising for Cambodia

W6 - Fundraising Banner

This December, a group of Year 11 girls in collaboration with a group of Year 11 PAC boys will have the opportunity to travel to Cambodia for Service Learning. This program provides an experience inclusive of cultural awareness and community service activities. Participants of previous trips have often expressed their heightened sense of self-awareness, community mindedness and an appreciation for living in a first world country such as Australia.

The Service Learning Trip involves visiting the New Hope for Cambodian Children Village and teaching the children English literature, which is essential for their current and future education. Furthermore, this trip offers the opportunity to construct houses for families in Cambodia and present them to the families in person, which has been a memorable and emotional experience for many past participants.

This trip could not be possible without the extensive fundraising being undertaken this year. We are inviting all friends and families of the St Peter’s Girls’ community to have dinner at the Feathers Hotel on 23 September (Monday, Week 10). For every pizza sold on the night, $10 will go towards the Cambodia Service Learning Trip. You are now able to book a reservation for the night either online or over the phone. During the night, you will be able to purchase raffle tickets for the chance to win a great prize.

The Cambodia Service Learning team is also selling portable chargers, which have proven to be extremely useful when access to a power point and charger is not available. Currently at stores across Adelaide, portable chargers are sold on average for between $50-$80. Fortunately, you are able to purchase a portable charger via www.trybooking.com/BEYTR for just $40.

Ultimately, the generous donations from charitable events and projects such as the above have the power to positively change and influence the lives of so many Cambodian children and families. We are all very excited to take part in this trip, making life-long memories and seeing the impact of our fundraising in a community where we can improve the quality of life.

House Charity Day Success

W6 - House Charity Day

Last Friday, the Year 10 Kilburn girls showcased their incredible scooping, decorating and money calculation skills to serve delicious ice-cream for a great cause. A large number of vanilla dixie cups were also sold to some of the younger children in the Junior School. The girls organised this event to support and raise money for the Kilburn House Charity, Cancer Council SA – an organisation that works across every area of cancer: cancer research, cancer prevention, cancer support and advocacy.

Over the past few weeks, the girls had to collaborate with many people including the Tuck ladies, Ms Haddy, Ms Mortimer, Dr Barclay and Mrs O’Brien. We had to work together, problem-solve, communicate clearly within our team and with others, design posters and work on our leadership skills. It was an amazing experience to support a vital organisation.

Lily-Rose Spartalis

The Year 10 Kennion girls sold over 400 sausages and 50 litres of iced tea, raising over $1000 of profit. This money will go towards Kennion’s House Charity, KickStart for Kids – an organisation dedicated to providing free breakfast and lunch at school for disadvantaged children.

This experienced was valued not only by KickStart for Kids, but also all of us, as we had the opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause and actively help to make a change.

Science and Engineering Challenge

W6 - Science and Engineering

The Science and Engineering Challenge gave the Year 9 students the opportunity to celebrate Science Week by designing, building and refining problem-solving machines.

Each House was divided into four teams and given a task based on real-life situations. The team solving the problem of air dropping medication to those in remote areas had to devise a method to allow an egg to be dropped from the top of the St Michael’s Wing without breaking. Earthquake-proof buildings were explored by building a tower as tall as possible that would stand up to a ferocious shaking. Transportation designs were made for both gliders and boats, which were constructed, tested and upgraded.

The trick was that each team only had limited materials; once they were used up, there were no more available. The participants showed great ingenuity in their designs – boats were propelled by sail, paddles and jet propulsion! The designs were tested and points awarded according to how well they fulfilled the design criteria.

In the end, Kennion won the day, largely through perseverance and carefully refining their designs after testing. They claimed the coveted inaugural place on the Science and Engineering Cup. Well done girls!

Could You be a Stallholder at The Garden Of Saintly Delights in 2020?

Although it’s still more than six months away, a great event takes planning, and The Garden of Saintly Delights is certainly one that captures the heart of our School community. With rides, food, entertainment and more, there is something for everyone, including shoppers with our ever-growing market place.

This year, I have taken on the role of coordinating our Market Stalls and am looking to gather as many different and varied stalls as possible. When thinking about where to source these from, I realised that we have so many families in our own community who may like the opportunity to display their business products on the day, not only to our School but the surrounding community as well. What better way to showcase the amazing talents of our school families than at our Garden of Saintly Delights Market?

So, if you have a business or sell a product that would suit being a part of our market, please get in touch via my email scarrie@senet.com.au as I would love to have as many of our families exhibited as possible.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sports Day Information for Years 4 – 12

Next Friday 6 September, St Peter’s Girls will stage the annual Years 4 – 12 Sports Day at the SA Athletics Stadium (previously Santos Stadium) at Mile End. The day will begin at 8.30am and will conclude by approximately 4pm. This event is to be treated like a normal school day, therefore attendance is compulsory. If a student is unable to participate in their events, a note must be provided to PE staff.

Students who travel on school buses will automatically be taken to the stadium in the morning and will depart on buses from there in the afternoon. In addition, we are offering bus services for registered students which will depart from school at 7.30am and return by approximately 4.45pm. To book your child’s seat, visit www.trybooking.com/BETPJ; bookings close at 5pm on Monday 2 September. All other students will need to be dropped off and picked up from the stadium, as the girls will be dismissed directly from the venue.

Girls are reminded to wear their complete PE uniform with a House top and hat (Year 12s have separate standards). We encourage the girls to display their House spirit, but please be aware body paint is not permitted in the stadium. Girls are able to wear spikes up to 7mm in length. The Saints Sport Support Group will be running a raffle with excellent prizes on offer. They will also be selling House wristbands for $2, water bottles for $10 and caps for $25, which can be purchased at the gate.

Sports News

W6 - Sport

With the conclusion of winter sports except teams who have successfully made finals including Open A and B Badminton, Year 8A Netball and the U13 Lacrosse team, it has been a long season that finished on a high with victory over Walford to claim the Winter Intercol Trophy.

Our U13 Lacrosse team plays in the semi-finals this weekend. If they win, they will proceed straight to the Grand Final on Saturday 14 September at Norwood Oval. If not, it’s a Prelim Final on Saturday 7 September, also at Norwood Oval.

In next week’s edition, we will provide overall placings for senior and middle teams.

CROSS COUNTRY

National Championships
Saints Girls had two representatives in the School Sport SA Cross Country team that competed in Wollongong, NSW. Isla Fahey (Year 4) finished in 22nd place in the 10 Year 2km event and Chloe Richardson (Year 5) finished in 35th place in the 11 Year 3km race. To make State selection is an outstanding effort, so congratulations to you both.

VOLLEYBALL

Congratulations to Charlotte White (U19), Anna White and Georgina Keough (U17 State Development team), Ruby Deakin and Lucy White (U15 State Development team).

AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL

Open – Saints 5.3-33 defeated Walford 0.0-0
As the last game of the season, it is more than fair to say that it was our best one yet. For our first win (33-0), it was a fantastic achievement by all of the girls and the crowd was incredible. It proved that all our hard work did eventually pay off. Special mention has to go to Hattie Maerschel and Bella Parton who kicked some amazing goals, and Liv Kelly who demonstrated some outstanding footy with strong kicks, tackles and disposals. It’s been an amazing year with these girls and although I’m sad to say it’s over, we can’t wait for next year to see what more we can bring to the sport. Thanks to the coaches Mr Mills and Sam Boots for always supporting us and teaching us throughout the season, it’s been pretty amazing! – Isabella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 6.11-47 defeated Walford 0.0-0
The girls were fired up to perform in the last game of the season for our annual Intercol against Walford. We went out there to display the improvement that has occurred across the season, and the girls didn’t disappoint. It began with a beautifully-taken mark and set shot from Eva Young, and the goals continued from there. We were able to hold the ball in our forward half for much of the game and although we became too congested in patches, the girls always strived to kick to the open side and use handball to cut through the opposition. It was a case of ‘all played well’, but special mentions go to Imogen Nienaber and Chloe Porter for some sparkling attacks on the ball and runs that left the opposition looking flat-footed. Also, Astrid Teague and Emily Bryce for clever play in the forward pockets, looking for space and attacking the ball with skill. Goal scorers were Grace Richards (2), Eva Young (2), Emily Bryce (1), Chloe Porter (1), Adele Eaton (1).

It has been a pleasure to coach the Middle team this year, seeing their progress which has come from an enjoyment in playing together as a group and listening to the feedback provided. Every time they have been asked to change something, whether that is game style or technique, it has been obvious they have attempted to do it. Their confidence has grown and hopefully this is just the beginning of their footballing journey and it would be great to see them out next year raring to go. – Dan Searle (Coach)

BADMINTON

Last Saturday was Intercol, and the Saints’ Badminton A, B and C teams all had clean and convincing wins, successfully retaining the trophy. Every player from all teams played exceptionally and showcased excellent skills and tactics. Though the Open D and E girls unfortunately lost their matches, there was some very smart badminton shown. It was great to see the girls getting the right ideas about how to win a game and learning to adjust their strategies. Also, a huge congratulations to the Open A and B girls who made the finals; they have been performing with great consistency throughout the season and demonstrated excellent techniques. Moreover, the cooperation between doubles partners has improved so much and has really showed the strength of teamwork. All the girls have displayed huge improvement compared with the start of the season. Congratulations and thank you to everyone, and all the best to the girls who will be playing in the finals this weekend! – Amy Li (Captain)

Open A: 6 – 0 defeated Walford
Open B: 6 – 0 defeated Walford
Open C1: 4 – 2 defeated Walford
Open C2: 3 – 3 defeated by Walford
Open D: 2 – 4 defeated by Wilderness
Open E: 1 – 7 defeated by Walford

HOCKEY

Open A – Saints 2 drew with Walford 2
The game started off very well, with many attacking opportunities and constant pressure in our forward half. We did extremely well to come back from being 1-0 down to tie 1-1 at half-time, thanks to a deflection goal by Amelie Eaton! In the second half, the intensity lifted and we were able to score another goal. The final result was 2-2 at full-time, however, the girls fought very hard throughout the whole game and should be proud of their improvement since the beginning of the season! – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

Open B – Saints 1 defeated Walford 0
The girls had good spirit heading into the game, which led to many early chances. As the game progressed, Walford created a couple of chances but Alice kept them out. The defence from the girls meant Saints controlled major parts of the game and created many chances, resulting in Tilly scoring the only goal, which would be the winning one.

The girls finished the season strongly and have come a long way from the start of the year. It has been great coaching them and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the team. – Will Stapleton (Coach)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 4 defeated by Glenelg 12
We played our biggest rivals this season, Glenelg. It was a tough game with Glenelg winning possession out of the centre most of the game. Although our girls were consistently turning the ball over in transition through midfield, we couldn’t turn it into goals. We will regroup and come out hard against them in the finals. – Caitlyn Grayson (Coach)

Under 11 Blue – Saints 10 defeated East Torrens/Payneham 2
All of the girls played a really great game. Lilly Meo (Year 3) displayed her improving stick skills by catching the ball many times and being able to pass it quickly in attack. Neela (Year 3) also impressed everyone with her long throws and was our awesome goalie in the second half. Once again, Claris Stolcman (Year 3) scored many goals as she shot around the goalie. At half-time, the girls were winning by 6 goals and needed to continue to work together. Enya Ouyang (Year 4) did well at keeping her stick up in defence and running quickly to get ground balls. Matilda Wilkin’s defence was also great as she stopped a number of opposition goals and did well at looking for open players to pass too. Eliza Burmester (Year 4) showed some great defence and was our goalie in the first half. Goal scorers were Matilda (3), Claris (5) and Lily (2). Best players were Neela, Claris and Matilda. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 White – Saints 7 defeated Eagles 3
This was by far the team’s most outstanding performance, culminating from hard work this season! Every team member played an incredible game – Amelia Lively and Ruby Kelly bravely blocked almost every goal whilst goalie. Lois Burton-Howard worked hard to gain ground with the ball and make space for passes. Matilda Birmingham played an awesome game, smoothly picking up ground balls and covering her player. Anvika Singh really helped the team in both attack and defence transitions. Chelsea Francis was our main goal scorer with 4 to her name – although everyone had an opportunity to score! We used the goal circle well, spread out to get clear and accurate passes, and intercepted the opposition. What a wonderful way to end the season with one game remaining – you should all be so proud of how far you’ve come and the confidence you’ve developed. It was a pleasure coaching you all in this game – I loved your teamwork and incredible enthusiasm towards lacrosse! – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 44 defeated Walford 31
Saints A played an amazing game against the fierce and powerful Walford team, coming away with a win and retaining the Intercol shield for another year. We started strongly by swiftly transitioning the ball mid-court to the goal third, allowing goalies to score quickly. The girls performed all strategies learnt throughout the season and did their absolute best to stick to structure. All girls executed short, sharp and smart passing, with Maggie Bailey and Alexia Politis showing great patience in throwing the ball to Sivi Sivasuthan and Nicolette Miller in the ring. Sivi and Nicolette worked well together, while Ehi Oyugbo and Hannah Freeman rebounded all of Walford’s missed goals assisted well with Anna White and Sarah Wishart in WD. Although Saints did not place in the top two, the development of the team has been absolutely amazing to watch. Last Saturday not only marked the end of the 2019 Netball season, it was also the last game for me and Nicolette at the School after being involved for several years. A big thanks to our Coach Sue for all the commitment and effort she has put in. The team would be nothing without her constant support and encouragement. – Sivi Sivasuthan (Captain)

Open B – Saints 36 defeated by Walford 43
Walford were quick to score 3 goals in the first 5 minutes of the game by having strong shooters and set plays. The girls rebounded quickly, picking up intensity across the court and putting pressure on Walford’s attack by tightening up on defence. Although Walford came away with the pennant, Saints demonstrated a high level of sportsmanship throughout, keeping their heads up high and staying focused, which is to be commended. The girls should be congratulated on their efforts this term. They have participated with diligence and have been exceptionally committed throughout the season, which has been evident in their improvement across games and trainings. Congratulations girls! – Eve Habel

Open C – Saints 2 defeated by Walford 91
Despite our defeat by a tough opposition, the Open Cs – with a number of fill-ins – put up a strong front and made sure they enjoyed the game as it was the last for the season. Ellen Zhang played especially well and greatly helped in attack. Faye Ma was one of the most persistent players. All girls worked well together, reading the court and maintaining a strong attacking position. – Stella Clark

Open D – Saints 12 defeated by Walford 70
Even though Saints only had 6 girls make it to the game, we still had fun playing Walford. Most of the girls played mid-court, so it was great of Annie Bradshaw, Sophie Abbott and Amelie Gray-Combe to all play defence at some point. We were all very proud of Charlotte Parker and Lucy Moten for managing to score goals, and even though we didn’t win, it was still heaps of fun to end the season. Thanks girls! – Charlotte Adams

Open E1 (Year 12) – Saints 20 defeated Walford 13
The team gave it their all, keen to finish the season on a high! We started the first quarter strongly, with Amy Rice consistently shooting great goals despite the strong winds. Anna Pryor was a standout centre player, helping to bring the ball out of defence as well as being a great asset around our goal circle. Jessica Schaedel also brought her A-game, making a number of intercepts and creating excellent defensive pressure. The 2nd and 3rd quarters continued to showcase Saints’ strength, with particularly strong defence in the opposition’s goal circle. The loud enthusiasm and great teamwork created an awesome atmosphere, making the successful last game even more meaningful! At the end, we were so sad the season was over and we decided to try make an Old Scholars’ social team for next year! – Annabelle Langley

Open E2 (Year 12) – Saints 34 defeated Walford 20
The girls played well with a strong start, resulting in a good half-time lead. They worked hard in defence to turn the ball over and moved the ball effectively in attack, scoring on almost every opportunity. The shooters worked well, rebounding their missed shots allowing the lead to continue. – Sarah Matheson

Year 9A – Saints 50 defeated Walford 14
Congratulations to our 9As who had a great Intercol in which we finished off the season with a win. It was an exceptional victory where we dominated in all positions. It is difficult to nominate players as we all excelled. It was a fast-paced game where each girl played her best, and the team dynamics showed. The game reflected our improvement throughout the season with strong mid-court, defence and goal ring work. The momentum remained consistent and all players were dedicated to win. The game reflected each player’s love for netball and demonstrated how close and strong we are as a team. Every player deserves to feel proud of the contribution they have made to this season, and how they performed in the match. – Toni Christiansen

Year 9B – Saints 69 defeated Walford 9
Everyone played really well, especially the main shooters, Ella Dnistriansky and Dayna Petruzzella. Walford had very solid ball skills. Our defenders did a good job at bringing the ball back to our attacking end. It was a top game to end the season. – Chase Hocking

Year 9C – Saints did not play

Year 9/10 – Saints did not play

Year 8A – Saints 71 defeated Walford 8
The 8As had an amazing game against Walford to contribute to the Intercol shield. Everyone played well with the defenders sticking tight to their players and blocking them out of the circle, the mid-court feeding well and making strong leads, and the shooters moving perfectly within the circle. Everyone had a strong game and we are looking forward to finals! – Ellie Humphrey

Year 8B – Saints 47 defeated Walford 3
The girls were put under a bit of pressure early in the game, however handled it very well. Emma Pool played an exceptional match (best of her season). The girls also loved the return of Georgie Owler in GA and GS. We worked well together, slowing the ball down and making sure we made minimal mistakes. As always, the defence was very strong. I am proud of the girls and their season, and have loved this group. This season would not have been the same without Coach Nikola Carr and her expertise. – Charlotte Staples

Year 8C – Saints 27 defeated Pembroke 12
It was nice to finish the season on a high. The best quarter was the 4th, as the ball frequently flowed down the court towards Saints’ end. The defence got stronger as the game progressed. With one shooter missing, the girls had to pull through and show bravery, confidence and leadership to step up to the role with Isabella Lowry and Eleanor Saies, who had never shoot but gave it a go. Lydia was exceptional, scoring most of our goals. The best players were Lydia Tolley, Isabel Burmester and Isobel Yelland. With teamwork, the girls pulled through with a 15-goal win. – Eleanor Saies

Year 7A – Saints 36 defeated Walford 3
The team didn’t qualify for finals but this game demonstrated that the girls had all learnt so much and improved to the max. With Mathilda Thomas out with a fractured wrist, we had the determination to win for her as she was desperate to play. The team put in so much effort with amazing leads and drives and fabulous passing, and winning our last game was awesome. Being a player on the court, I know that having a cheer squad there for you is the best feeling and really motivates you, so thank you to everyone who came out. I am really proud of the way we all supported each other and am going to miss this amazing team. – Sophie Ricciuto

Year 7B – Saints 29 defeated Walford 7
We were excited for our first-ever Intercol. We started off with a strong warm up which intimidated the opposition. In the first quarter, we were up by 5 goals which gave us confidence to maintain the standard. In the 2nd and 3rd quarters, Marcella Tolley and Ayla Blaskett worked really well together in the goal circle, scoring lots of goals. The team did a great job at intercepting and driving down the court. We kept our heads up through the second half and managed to pull out a fantastic win. – Ayanna Roy

Year 7C – Saints 11 defeated Pembroke 8
The girls played exceptionally well. Special mentions go to Ishita Chellaboina and Emilia Libri. Emilia was excellent at shooting our goals, and Ishita played really well in WD with strong defence. Overall, great job girls and thanks to the coaches and players for a terrific season. – Naadiya Ishaq

Year 4 Blue – Saints 12 defeated Walford 10
The girls were really challenged in this game. Walford came out very strongly in the 1st quarter, but with determination, the girls settled and started putting pressure on the ball, intercepting and making space, which resulted in Saints coming home with the win. Great work girls. – Karen Braund (Coach)

Year 3-4 White – Saints 9 defeated Wilderness Red 6

Year 3 – Saints 1 defeated by Pembroke 18

SOCCER

Year 6 – Saints 3 drew with Pembroke Blue 3
Great game on Friday. We were down 2-1 during the first half, and the girls fought back to a 3-3 draw. We had excellent attacking play and many changes at goal. Thanks to Anna and Shirley for being goalkeepers. – Sebastiano Mazzarolo (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 2 drew with Pembroke Yellow 2
The team worked hard throughout the match, managing to score 2 goals. A special mention to Stella who played for the opposition with some of our other girls, and also listened and tried to put in play everything she had been learning. The team did very well and showed good sportsmanship with the end result being a draw. – Lucy Benn (Student Coach)

eNews – Week 5, Term 3 2019

Issue no. 25Enews-banner

W5 - Book Week

From the Head of Junior School

Reading is My Secret Power

Suzanne HaddyWe’ve long known that reading to and with young children gives them a substantial advantage in the years that follow. They not only acquire literacy skills more readily, but there is also a positive impact on other cognitive and social/emotional skills, and the effect is long-lasting. Further to this, and great news for those of us looking for a long and happy life, is a whole raft of neuro-research about the positive effects of regular reading on the adult brain.

Not only can reading make you a more interesting and also empathetic human being, it provides benefits to your mental health, sharpening your mind as you age. For the over 50s, reading books – fiction, non-fiction, poetry or prose – for just 30 minutes a day over several years, has been shown to reduce signs of dementia, provide defence against other effects of cognitive decay, and has even led to living longer lives. Deep reading uses multiple parts of your brain in both hemispheres, increasing neural connections. Expanding your vocabulary, a fabulous side-effect of reading, leads to more resilient minds and fuels your cognitive reserves.

So, in celebration of another fabulous Book Week in the Junior School, we encourage you all to grab a good book, and find out how reading can be your ‘secret power’.

Power-Charged Footy Training

W5 - Football

Saints Girls were kicking goals last night during a special training session led by Port Adelaide Football Club star Charlie Dixon.

It came ahead of today’s highly-anticipated Intercol against Walford.

“It was amazing to hear about his AFL career, his motivation techniques and his lifestyle in a footy-based environment. He led some new drills and gave us great tips for our Intercol game. We really appreciate him coming out as it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” – Isabella Bernardi (Aussie Rules Captain)

A Message from the SRC Prefect

W5 - Prefect

This year, the SRC has been very busy with meetings held every fortnight involving lots of discussions, suggestions and input from the Middle and Senior School year levels.

The SRC successfully organised the Year 5/6 Social last term which was a very popular event. All the girls did lots of dancing and made new friendships with Saints, PAC and Rostrevor boys. We are also in the process of conducting more lunchtime activities such as movie sessions and Staff vs Students events. Some of our topics for discussion in our meetings have been: introducing WiFi on School buses, composting bins, biodegradable packaging/cutlery and a more varied salad lunch option at the Tuck Shop, charging stations for electronic devices, use of the Gym at new times, House beanies and sweat bands, and clarification about uniforms and corridor rules.

All of these issues and more have then been followed up with the appropriate staff such as Ms Mortimer, Mr Fuller, Mr Rosser and the IT and Maintenance departments. We have had some robust conversations with changes being implemented in the short term, while others are being planned for the future. I have been so pleased with the amount of engagement and enthusiasm that the SRC girls have shown at each meeting and by completing the tasks they are assigned. They are passionate about representing every girl, listening to their concerns and suggesting improvements. We have worked collaboratively as a group and made some effective improvements to the School.

E-Waste Collection Generates a Buzz

W5 - E-Waste

St Peter’s Girls’ School has teamed up with TechCollect to provide our students with a collection bin for their Electronic Waste (E-Waste). E-waste is a significant issue in our society, as millions of electronic items are incorrectly disposed of each year, which causes the hazardous materials they contain to be leaked into our environment. TechCollect is a leading Australian recycling company that recycles E-Waste in an efficient and environmentally-friendly manner.

On the first Friday of every month, we encourage families to bring in any unwanted or broken electronic items, including:

Laptop computers and associated cables
Tablets, notebooks and palmtops
Computer monitors and parts (e.g. internal hard drives and CD drives)
Computer peripherals and accessories (e.g. mice, keyboards, web cameras and USBs)
Printers, faxes, scanners and multi-functional devices.

A bin located near the maintenance sheds will accept such items from 8am – 3.30pm on the first Friday of each month, except school holidays. The first collection day will take place soon, on 6 September. The Environment Club encourages you to search your home for unwanted electronic items and bring them to school on this day to help combat E-Waste.

The photo shows you where the purple bins are located, near the entry/exit of the car park, providing easy access.

The next collection will occur after the school holidays, on Friday 1 October.

Ponytail Project – A Cut Above

W5 - Ponytails

This year, Kilburn’s House Charity, the Cancer Council, has asked the Year 10 class to help launch a new peer-to-peer fundraising initiative called the Ponytail Project. Students who take part will get sponsorship to “Rock the Chop” and cut off at least 10cm of their ponytail to raise money for the charity as well as donating their hair. So, we have decided to create a House competition to see who can raise the most money for this worthy cause. Interested students should look out for Year 10 Kilburn girls who will come around during House Meetings to explain the registration.

Interested students should go to https://www.ponytailproject.com.au and register now in SA and, after setting up their own pages, join their House teams.

Handy Lessons for Handball Players

W5 - Handball

The Saints Girls’ Year 12 PE members took part in a Handball tournament as preparation for their moderation in a few weeks’ time. They were able to work on their skills in a competitive environment and set up plays for their teammates.

The girls realised a couple of areas they need to work on, especially in regard to physicality within the sport. The improvement was obvious by the last two matches, where the girls were able to put their learnings into much better passing and fast-break moves.

Year 5s Invent New Art

W5 - Year 5

In Art lessons this term, students are working collectively to create props and pieces to be displayed in the foyer to support the Year 5 Production. They are also creating individual works under the theme of ‘Invention’. This theme was drawn from the father character in the story of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Caractacus Potts. Invention as a theme sparks the imagination and allows for individual interpretation. Students are conceptualising either biological or mechanical inventions, or a fusion of both. They may be fanciful or practical, allowing students to follow their personal interests and ideas. The inventions will be illustrated in a variety of ways including a series of sketches, large-scale drawings and simple animations. When developing their ideas, students will draw inspiration from historical and contemporary works by artists and illustrators. We are looking at character illustrations and animations by Shaun Tan, historical works from Leonardo da Vinci and contemporary creations by local artist David Archer.

W5 - Year 6

On Tuesday 20 August, the Year 6 students travelled to Glenelg as part of the provocation phase of our next Unit of Inquiry, ‘How we express ourselves’, to analyse advertising displays along Jetty Road. Whilst there, we also visited The Beachouse where the girls had the opportunity to explore electrical circuits through dodgem cars, discover more about reversible and irreversible changes via the making of fairy floss, delve into the use of sand filtration for the water slides and participate in a game of mini golf to investigate angles.

August is collection month for sanitary products to help the 85,000 homeless women and teenage girls who either can’t easily access or afford these necessary items. AEROBICS

Saints recently contested two National Aerobics events. Both teams did a wonderful job representing the School in Queensland over the past two weeks and should be very proud of their efforts – especially being the first teams to compete at Nationals again since 2011! – Corinne Dyer (Kennion ’14)

HOCKEY

Congratulations to Amelia Lucas (Year 7) who has been selected to represent SA at the National U12 Hockey Championships and will be travelling to Tasmania in October.

AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL

Open – Saints 1.1-7 defeated by Westminster 9.9-57
The game was a hard one against Westminster and the girls fought for the ball the whole time. Although the score was not in our favour, we did play some great quarters. The girls communicated well and the defence line tried their very best to block as many goals as possible. Special mention must go to Ellie Anderson who read the play exceptionally well and made some top tackles. Our next match will prove to be the greatest of the year, being our last game and the Intercol against Walford. – Isabella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 2.3-15 defeated by Sacred Heart 4.4-28
The girls put up a fight. It is clear how much we have all improved since the beginning of the season. Eva Young and Grace Richards scored 2 goals and 2 behinds. Chloe Porter, Ellie Humphrey, Ella Dnistriansky, Emily Bryce and Naomi Singh played particularly well. The girls played their best and are hoping to do even better in their last match against Walford in their Intercol. – Amelie Gray-Combe

BADMINTON

The teams won four of six matches on Saturday, which was again an excellent contributed by all of our players. With two games forfeited by Pembroke, the Open A team defeated them 5 – 1, ensuring a spot in the Finals. Well done to the A team players for their amazing efforts and performance this term! The Open B team had a rough start with a close loss in their second doubles. However, the girls were able to quickly adjust, get into the games and showcase their skills, which earned them a convincing 5 – 1 win against Pembroke. Unfortunately, the Open C1 and E teams lost to their opponents, but there were still some amazing performances, with a lot of room to improve coming back to regular trainings. It was great to see the girls playing with enthusiasm and encouraging each other. Congratulations and well done to everyone! – Amy Li (Captain)

Open A – Saints 5 defeated Pembroke 1
Open B – Saints 5 defeated Pembroke 1
Open C1 – Saints 2 defeated by Pembroke 4
Open C2 – Saints 5 defeated Immanuel 1
Open D – Saints 3 defeated Walford 3 (on points)
Open E – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 9

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 36 defeated Walford 28
Our 4th win in a row and this was the best we have played. It was a close first half and scores were tied, but in the second-half, we really stepped up our defence which led to many turnovers and fast-break opportunities. This allowed us to pull away to win by 8 against a very good team. All played well with a special mention to Levanya De Silva, Nicole Wang and Olivia Reynolds, who all scored their maximum 12 points. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 12 defeated by Seymour 44
It was a tough game for the girls, with limited rotations in the second half. Seymour proved to be a strong opponent with good attacking play and great defence. Saints had their opportunities but were unable to finish. – Jacob Evans (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 10 defeated by Seymour Green 42
The girls tried their hardest against Seymour but were unfortunately unsuccessful. The Seymour girls put defence on as soon as the game started and the girls struggled to get past them. However, we managed to score 10 points by quick passes and calling for the ball. The girls have really succeeded from the first game to now. They call for the ball, dribble and they aren’t afraid to shoot. We now just need to work on rebounding the ball – Kelly Laird (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open A – Saints 1 drew with Trinity 1
The Open A girls played extremely well. The game was at Trinity College and we were lucky enough to play on their brand new turf pitch. In the first quarter, everyone won their 50/50 balls which helped us create many opportunities in front of goal. The second, third and final quarters were equally as good and the girls kept fighting and narrowed to score line to 1-1. Well done to Poppie Goldsmith who played as an overlapping half back and made connections with Holly Cardone who used her speed and skill to force outcomes in the circle! – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Trinity 2
The girls started the game quickly, putting shots on the goals. The contest was even, with both sides creating opportunities. Emily Whittaker, Siena Kulinski and Mabelle Kayser were determined in stopping chances, but the Trinity pressure was too strong. – Will Stapleton (Coach)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 13 defeated Wilderness 1
Despite the cold and muddy conditions, the girls played with a lot of energy, winning the ball out of centre and off the ground just about every time. Ashlyn May led the team with 6 goals and was well supported by Emily Bates and Alannah Godfrey with 3 each. We started the mercy rule in the third quarter but still finished with a great win – Caitlyn Grayson (Coach)

Under 11 Blue – Saints 3 defeated by St Dominics 5
Despite having no subs, the girls continuously played their best. When she got the ball, Neela (Year 3) ran hard, and it was great to see her have the confidence to try shoot goals. Claris Stolcman (Year 3) was goalie in the first half and transitioned the ball quickly into attack during the second half. Our goalie for the second half was Lilly Meo (Year 3), who was impressive when going for ground balls. At half-time, the score was 2-all. Enya Ouyang (Year 3) always ran hard and had her stick up in defence. In addition, Eliza Burmester (Year 3) made several intercepts and stuck to her player in defence. It was a great team effort. Goal scorers were Claris (2) and Lilly (1). Best players were Claris and Eliza. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 White – Saints 3 defeated by North Adelaide 11
This game proved incredibly challenging as we faced a very experienced, mature team. Our opposition really tested us on the field, with a tall goalie and fast players. We started the first quarter strongly with a quick 2 goals, however, North Adelaide showed more energy and determination for the ball. Despite the score, there were close competitions for ground balls and we used the back of the goal well to get free passes. Best players were Chelsea Francis and Amelia Lively who worked hard throughout the whole game. With two games remaining, I hope we can see some more enthusiasm in coming weeks – we are improving each game! – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 36 defeated by Westminster 61
Last Saturday, the girls played an undeniably challenging game against Westminster and were unfortunately defeated. Statistically speaking, Saints played very well but, due to Westminster’s vigilant pressure, it was difficult for the score to reflect how all players performed. The hands-over pressure from Westminster forced Saints to make many errors, however, each quarter, Saints proceeded to place pressure. Hannah Freeman and Ehi Oyugbo were undoubtedly the best on court. Both played an absolutely amazing game in defence, as their constant pressure was effective throughout, continually causing errors in Westminster’s plays. They consistently fought for rebounds and smoothly transitioned the ball from defence to attack, allowing the goalies to score. Saints played a difficult game but constantly reviewed plays to maximise scoring opportunities. Good work girls. – Sivi Sivasuthan (Captain)

Open B – Saints 29 defeated by Westminster 62
The girls played a tough game against Westminster but, despite the challenge, fought hard. We read the play well and made some great plays. Special mention must go to Anda Ceplite who played the whole game in goals, despite never having played before. She was outstanding and shot some incredible goals. The next game will prove to be a great one – the Intercol – as it will show the development we have made as a team throughout the season. – Bella Bernardi

Open C – Saints 13 defeated by Westminster 63

Open D – Saints did not play

Open E1 (Yr12) – Saints 9 defeated by Westminster 52
Sadly, it was like we were competing against the Thunderbirds in their trial match; our social netball skills just weren’t sufficient enough to overcome the adverse competition we faced. We attempted to include a partner lift for our only shooter, Asha Short, to assist her in getting a goal, however, the umpire did not approve. In the end, players who were not usually shooters but were tall enough to see over their opponents attempted the position and managed to bring our score up. Ultimately, we all had a fun time amongst friends. – Jessica Schaedel and Asha Short

Open E2 (Yr12) – Saints 36 defeated Westminster 20
The game was looking like a dreary start with the opposition only having 5 players to verse our 7. Through good team spirit, one of our girls played for the opposition to have 6 v 6 so the game could go ahead. Saints were more than willing to assist the opposition and had fun playing against their own players, although the colours were very confusing. The game had nothing but high spirits even though Saints dominated the game for the win. We started the game strongly and applied scoreboard pressure, increasing our lead throughout the game to finish off with a strong win. Lollies were shared, laughs were had and it was a very pleasant game finishing on top. – Steph Lee (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 24 defeated by Westminster 60
The game was very competitive and one of the hardest competitors faced by Saints so far. We had a very uncertain beginning with several mistakes made. However, throughout the game, we were able to improve tactically and gain more strategies. This was not the best performance seen by the team, but we will improve and learn from our mistakes, and win at Intercol. – Sivanthi Sivasuthan

Year 9B – Saints 36 defeated Westminster 29
The first quarter was a strong start with great attacking from Ella Dnistriansky and Dayna Petruzzella. The whole game stayed consistent with great defending and attacking from the team. Chase Hocking was extremely helpful in the last half, ensuring the ball didn’t get down the other end. We were extremely proud of each other and for winning such a great match. – Sophie Norman

Year 9C – Saints 16 defeated Immanuel 14

Year 9/10 – Saints defeated Seymour on forfeit

Year 8A – Saints 43 defeated Westminster 23
The 8As had a great win over the Westminster girls. After a shaky first quarter, we fought hard and applied great defensive pressure. Special mention to Georgia Mallick for her amazing work as GK. The mid-court combined really well, bringing the ball down the court, accurately feeding it to the goalies, and also making many intercepts. – Willow Stewart-Rattray

Year 8B – Saints 35 defeated by Westminster 36
Saints played a good game and only lost by 1 to Westminster. Charlotte Staples and Grace Beaumont worked well in the goal ring. Many of the girls were feeling sick and, therefore, couldn’t play or did play and just had to go easy. So, even though some of us were feeling ill, we played a good game to the best of our ability. – Bella Sanders-Wills

Year 8C – Saints 40 defeated Immanuel 11
Our team played an amazing game against Immanuel. We were scared at first but we kept our intensity up and were able to achieve a massive win. All the girls tried their hardest which provided a great outcome. – Isabel Burmester

Year 7A – Saints 24 defeated by Westminster 43

Year 7B – Saints 4 defeated by Westminster 20
Saints played a tough game against Westminster. Olivia Oakes intercepted many passes and did well in defence with Stephanie Andrejewskis. Ayla Blaskett was shooter and scored a few goals, as well as Marcella Tolley and Stephanie. Ayanna Roy and Maddy Penley played in centre and intercepted many of Westminster’s passes. Sadly, Saints didn’t scrape in a win but played a great game – Zara Chessell

Year 7C – Saints 1 defeated by Immanuel 12
Everyone on the team tried their best throughout the game. The girls chose the positions they wanted and the new roles worked really well, helping us to defend and move the ball down the court when attacking. The team played very well and tried as hard as they could but, unfortunately, were beaten by Pembroke.

Year 4 Blue – Saints 18 defeated Seymour Green 2
A strong team game with Charlotte Hocking, Romana W and Rishita Raghav playing well in defence with many intercepts. Maddison Sims contributed to 12 of the goals scored, shooting with accuracy. Well done girls and thank you to Cleo Connor, who was injured, for scoring. – Karen Braund (Coach)

Year 3/4 White – Saints 3 defeated by Pembroke Yellow 8
The girls played a really strong first half. We had amazing defending by Lauren Fuller and Lois Burton-Howard. There are a few areas of improvement that will help the girls in their future games. The girls played really well as a team. – Georgie Owler (Student Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness Red 1
The girls had such a great game; they communicated well and brought the ball down to the shooters in a very controlled and slow manner. The energy levels were high and the girls were super excited. This enthusiasm and communication had a good output on the team’s play. – Maddie Harrex (Student Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 1 defeated by Walford 5
This week, the Open As lost to Walford in the annual Intercol. This game is an exciting one for the girls, so it was unlucky to lose. However, the girls handled it admirably and left the grounds with their spirits and heads held high. Special mention to Kendra Ware, who played in goals for the entire game! Despite the scoreboard, she stopped many amazing shots from being scored and did an overall brilliant job as goalkeeper. I would just like to say a big thank you to our Coach, Dion, for encouraging us to always play our best and for helping the team improve significantly as a collective. Also, I would like to acknowledge the Year 12 girls – Isabella Villani, Chloe Deieso, Tahlia Towers and Olivia Law – who have done a great job this season and contributed so much to the sport over the years. They have been such vital members of the team and will be missed moving forward into next year. This season has been a crucial learning experience for all of the girls and I hope that next season, we can come back with greater determination and passion to perform and grow even further as a team. – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 1 defeated by St Michaels 3

Middle A – Saints 0 defeated by Walford 2
The Middle As played Walford on Wednesday for the School’s Intercol. The girls unfortunately lost 2-0; they played extremely well and were dominating most the game until the last five minutes when Walford scored two quick, lucky goals. The team should be incredibly proud of their efforts in this game and throughout the season; they have played every game with a positive attitude and have always stepped up to a challenge. They have improved so much throughout this season and have grown as players – we hope they all continue to play soccer in the future. – Dom Rigby

Middle B – Saints 1 defeated by Walford 3
Saints played arguably their best game of the season. It started evenly before Walford gained ascendency, but Tamsin Freeman and Ruby Kirwan were resilient in defence. A goal down, Saints rallied and put pressure on Walford with Stella Rasheed being rewarded from good play by Alicia Toh and Zihan Huang to level the score. Despite Saints trying their best and Zihan having a great second half in goal, Walford capitalised on a tiring Saints’ defence to record the win. – Kerry Hudson (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 2 defeated by St Ignatius 3
A great game on Friday versing St Ignatius. We were down 2-0 during the first half, and the girls fought back to 2-2 at half-time. St Ignatius only scored 1 goal in the second half. Despite only having one sub, all the girls worked together until the final whistle. – Sebastiano Mazzarolo (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour 2
The defeat was in spite of a solid effort from our girls! Lyra defended the goal with gusto and our team worked well together. Applying skills from training to the field, Lucy Tulloch, Jiahui Zhang and Alyssa Piantedosi did a great job of regaining control for Saints numerous times each. All in all, a good game of soccer. – Kirsten Larson (Staff Supervisor)

Year 3/4 – Saints 6 defeated Pulteney 4
The girls’ second game for the season was another success. The focus for the week at training had been accurate passing, and Lily Forby, Lilly Meo and Lauren Disney all demonstrated this skill with confidence. The contest was even for the first part of the first half and then the goals came thick and fast. Chyndelle Capobianco scored her first goal for the season and then Lauren was dazzling with her mercurial footwork, scoring five goals. It was clearly evident that Sylvie Flavel and Emily Kim both enjoyed their first games for the season. Valentina Patino showed both courage and perseverance in her role as goalkeeper in the second half, which allowed Lois an enjoyable break, handing over her goalie gloves and enjoying the opportunity to go for long runs out of defence. – Mark Routley

National Tech Win

In news hot off the press, two of our Year 10 girls studying Artificial Intelligence (AI) have claimed 1st place in the National AI for Good Challenge.

Edie McKellar and Jenna Bowden impressed the judges with their concept of ‘NAila’ – an AI midwife who aims to bring education and monitoring to pregnant women living in remote communities and developing countries.

Following their win at the State Finals earlier this month, the girls travelled to Sydney for a shot at the National title and, this afternoon, they celebrated victory!

It’s yet another example of how St Peter’s Girls’ School is taking technology education to the next level. Well done girls!

From the Director of Early Learning

The Community Garden Project

KM ELC photoThe creation of an ELC Community Garden has been a dream for quite some time. With the support of The Friends of the ELC, we raised enough funds to construct our garden. During the July holidays, Ned from Property Services worked off the plan created by the children to build a sustainable ELC Community Garden. We have been investing time this term to form the relationship with the new space, to share small group experiences with the adults and children to imagine how we might plant our garden and for what purpose. We have invited our community to give us some direct communication about how they would like to see the garden utilised.

As this garden is so much more than just a place to grow vegetables, the educators have been working on a clear learning intention now and moving forward so that we can ensure the endurance of the garden over time and that it is viewed as a learning space and a strong connection to Ferguson Park.

Nurturing and sustaining our natural environment are key roles we have as citizens of our world. We take responsibility for building a foundation of experience for these areas across the Early Learners’ Centre. We embark on embedding cultural, ethical and ecological understandings through our daily life and investigations throughout our learning environment and beyond.

The introduction of our Community Garden provides us with a vehicle for embedding these understandings, taking active responsibility for its care and function. It enables community action for a shared purpose and provides a place for deep connection, relationships and research. Through daily interactions, it will develop as a place where joy, respect, wonder and anticipation are inherent.

Our intention is to create a space where community members are welcomed to participate alongside each other, encouraging the sharing of experience and responsibility. The cycle of learning through our garden will build upon experiences children share within their own families, cultures and beyond.

We look forward to welcoming our School community into our space.

Chilling Rivalry at Winter Interhouse

W4 - Winter Interhouse

The annual Winter Interhouse started in wintery conditions last Friday. The Reception to Year 6 Cross Country needed to be postponed, while Years 7, 8 and 9 braved and then succumbed to the elements, with the 8s and 9s running for any cover they could find as the rain turned to hail at the end of their event.

This continued into the Aussie Rules held after school; every 10 minutes of clear weather was followed by 5 minutes of heavy rain. With spectators doing all they could to stay warm and generate vocal support from the sidelines, the conditions seemed to create even more competition on the field, allowing the bolder players to finish by sliding as far as they could through muddy patches.

Saturday morning was quite a contrast and, despite grim weather forecasts, the morning was cool but clear. Badminton, Hockey, Netball and Soccer were all fiercely contested with many close results.

In Aussie Rules, Patteson prevailed, winning back-to-back titles; Badminton saw Selwyn claim the shield for the first time, breaking Kilburn’s dominance since 2014; Selwyn retained the Netball title; Kennion reclaimed the Hockey shield which they last won in 2016; and in Soccer, Patteson defeated Selwyn on goals to claim victory.

Many thanks to the Saints Sport Support Group for the barbecue and coffee van during the morning which proved great value to the many hungry players and parents.

The final results were:

Aussie Rules – 1st Patteson, 2nd Selwyn, 3rd Kilburn, 4th Kennion
Soccer – 1st Patteson, 2nd Selwyn, 3rd Kilburn, 4th Kennion
Badminton – 1st Selwyn, 2nd Kilburn, 3rd Patteson, 4th Kennion
Hockey – 1st Kennion, 2nd Patteson, 3rd Kilburn, 4th Selwyn
Netball – 1st Selwyn, 2nd Patteson, 3rd Kilburn, 4th Kennion

Maths Quiz Equals Fun Night

W4 - Maths

On the night of Wednesday 7 August, many teams from Years 7 – 12 competed in the annual Maths Quiz Night in the Middle School. We competed in maths problems, puzzles and general knowledge quizzes against teams from other local schools.

Everyone brought a lot of food and there was just as much eating as answering questions. It was a great night where everyone really gave it their all and challenged themselves while having a lot of fun. I was fortunate to belong to a winning team – Adele Russell, Rose Guo and I won the award for being the Best Junior Mathematics Team.

Environment Club Minds its Beeswax

W4 - Environment Club

Tracy Holtze, a former Food Technology teacher, visited the School to teach the members of the Environment Club how to create beeswax wrappers. These are sustainable and reusable food wrappers that can be used as an alternative to single-use plastic. They can be bought at many stores or can be created by infusing pieces of cotton with a mixture of food-grade beeswax, pine rosin and oil (usually jojoba or coconut oil). This allows the wrapper to easily wrap around an item of food and to be washed with a cold cloth before it is reused.

As we all are aware, packaging has caused an increasing amount of rubbish pollution which has developed into a worldwide issue. This activity has given the Environment Club the skills and knowledge they need to create their own wrappers and help reduce their ecological footprint of this issue.

The Environment Club really enjoyed the activity and we encourage our School community to try beeswax wrappers as an alternative to cling wrap for their produce.

Dance Students Moved by Artistic Outing

W4 - Dance

Last Friday, 47 dance students from Years 9 and 10 attended a school edition of Sydney Dance Company’s ‘Triple Bill’ at the Dunstan Playhouse. Both classes have been learning contemporary dance skills, choreography and creating their own dance movement in this style. They were fortunate enough to not only view two of the company’s current works – Neon Aether and Cinco – but listen to the choreographers discuss their process for generating original ideas and movement. It’s always a pleasure to take our students to view live dance performance as it is often a first for some students that opens up their minds to this creative and expressive art form.

“The performance was something so unique and I really enjoyed the use of imagination in Neon Aether relating to the space fiction. It surprised me how the artistic directors manipulated the lights to create blackouts so the dancers could make their spots and it impressed me how balanced and strong the dancers were. It taught me the value of putting your visions into action and expressing your imaginative moves into a form of expression like dance.” – Caitlin Middelberg

“This experience allowed me to become inspired by their unique movements and choreographic skills. I liked learning about the artists’ inspirations and techniques for creating the movements. I was surprised by the way they incorporated their choreographic intent through their work by using different stimulus to establish a story that can be interpreted differently by the audience. I was really impressed by the way the day was structured and how we had time to listen to the choreographers talk about their pieces.” – Georgina Keough

Share the Dignity Campaign – Can You Help?

As part of our Health programs, St Peter’s Girls is once again participating in the Share the Dignity campaign. August is collection month for sanitary products to help the 85,000 homeless women and teenage girls who either can’t easily access or afford these necessary items. Collection boxes will be available in various classrooms and the Library for the girls to place their donations. I would love for our School community to be aware of what we are doing and to embrace this charity.

I, Pandora Plaudits

W4 - Drama

The SACE Year 11 and 12 Drama students presented their production of I, Pandora in a four-show season last week. Based on the well-known myth of Pandora, the play interwove a classical Greek re-telling of the original story with a more naturalistic exploration of the contemporary tale of Ida Sallinger. Involving an evocative soundscape, clever animations and a magnificent set, the play was a tremendous hit with all who saw it. The actors each gave startlingly impressive performances as they explored complex human emotions, worked together powerfully in an ensemble, and developed captivating characters. The play itself was a completely original work – written in-house, workshopped collaboratively, and developed by the students – and was a testament to the creative talents of all involved.

A Taste of Spain for Language Learners

W4 - Churros

The Spanish ab initio Year 11 group have taken Spanish learning out of the classroom. They started the project of language immersion in March, when they decided to travel to Spain in 2020. The girls have learnt about the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and are getting ready to visit Instituto Cervantes in Salamanca, Spain which awards the DELE Certification in Languages (Spanish).

Thanks to the support of the Saints Girls’ community, the students raised approximately $200 though the churros fundraiser, which will go towards their certificate in Spain.

Visual Arts Students Weave their Magic

W4 - Visual Arts

The Year 9 Visual Arts students recently completed woven wall hangings. They were greatly inspired by the techniques, colours and materials used in the works created by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers.

Although many students initially found weaving to be challenging, they reported a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment as they mastered practices and reflected upon their finished product.

It was wonderful to see a diverse collection of finished woven wall hangings that effectively showcase the skills and techniques developed in this unit of work.

Calling all Parents of Saints’ Rowers

W1 Rowing
AGM: Tuesday 20 August
Time: 6 – 8pm
Location: Chiverton Boardroom

The 2019-20 school rowing season is almost upon us and your girls need your support to ensure a smooth and enjoyable season. Friends of Rowing (FoR) is thriving and we welcome new parents to join our group to support our Director of Rowing and ensure Saints Girls continues to have a successful rowing program.

One of the purposes of FoR is to raise much-needed funds to help reduce the cost associated with rowing. Over the past few years, we have contributed money towards compulsory rowing camps, which has greatly reduced the on-cost charged to parents. We have also purchased training equipment, clothing and hats. Some of the ways we’ve raised money include sponsorship, sausage sizzles and raffles. With the School’s help, we organise the rowing social events such as the Season Welcome and Head of the River Dinner. This committee adds real value to our program and without fundraising, the cost of rowing for parents would inevitably rise.

Throughout the rowing season, FoR meet each month at the School for a short social catch up with staff members and coaches. Everyone is welcome as we work collaboratively to help inform decisions which add value to the program. You don’t need to volunteer for a committee position or attend every meeting; feel free to just come along to hear about the work we do, offer up any ideas you may have, and get to know other rowing parents. The more we support each other, the greater we support our girls and their passion for rowing.

As stated above, our AGM and first meeting for the season will take place on Tuesday 20 August. Please come along so that we can continue to improve the success of the Saints Girls’ Rowing program. Afterwards, parents are welcome to join us at the Feathers Hotel for a social catch up.

W4 - Aerobics

AEROBICS

After a long season, it was an outstanding effort from our middle Aerobics team of Madeline Harmer (Year 9), Annie Warrick, Zara Blight and Jessica Cao (Year 8), and Sienna Huxtable (Year 7) who finished 5th at the National FISAF Aerobics Championships held in Brisbane.

Congratulations also to Caitie Scane (Year 9) who competed in the individual section and placed 9th from 15 competitors.

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 25 defeated Seymour Green 24
The team played well in a close game and held on to win by the smallest margin. We started well and were in control of the game to lead 23 to 14 at three-quarter time. Unfortunately, both Januri Wagaarachchi and Levanya De Silva had reached their scoring limit (12 points each) and our scoring dried up. Overall though, a really good effort. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 18 defeated Walford Blue 16
The girls secured their first win which was excellent. You can see how much they have improved from their first game to now. They did a man-on-man defence that worked really well, making it hard for the other team to get the ball. They worked as a team calling each other’s names and helping each other out when they needed. It was a very close game but the girls managed to get the win. – Kelly Laird (Coach)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 14 defeated St Aloysius 5
We played SAC down at Findon Oval, Woodville. The rain held out during the first two quarters where the girls were leading by 6 points. In the second half, SAC came back with some goals that were just enough to keep us out of mercy rule. We finished just as the rain did with a 14 – 5 win and 8 out of our 12 girls getting a goal. – Caitlyn Grayson (Coach)

Under 11 Blue – Saints 6 defeated by North Adelaide 15
It was a very wet and cold morning but nevertheless the girls played well. Ruby Kelly (Year 3) did a fantastic job at being our goalie as she stopped most shots. Claris Stolcman (Year 3) was impressive with her speed as she ran down the field to be an option in attack. Our ground balls were quite good, especially Matilda Birmingham’s (Year 3) as she always got her stick down early. It was great to see Neela (Year 3) and Lilly Meo (Year 3) have the confidence to run hard when they had the ball in their stick. Chelsea Francis (Year 3) did a great job at being the back-up player behind the goal if a shot was missed and always moving in attack. Goal scorers were Chelsea (4), Claris (1) and Matilda (1). Best players were Neela and Ruby. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 White – Saints 6 defeated St Dominics 9
Despite losing, the game was exceptionally close and was one of the team’s best performances this term. Excellent energy and spirit was shown, and the score remained tight with pressure shown from both sides. Unfortunately in the third quarter, we had a slight dip and this allowed the opposition to score a number of goals quickly. In the final quarter, we showed our determination as we regained composure and scored 3 goals! All players contributed well, with Eliza Burmester and Enya Ouyang stopping many goals as goalies. Anvika Singh worked hard in the midfield, with Millie Lively, Lois Burton-Howard, Enya and Matilda Wilkin scoring the goals for the team. Well done, you all played a great game. In training, we will focus on getting in front of defence and intercepting passes. – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

NETBALL

Year 4 Blue – Saints 13 defeated Pembroke Blue 6
The girls played a great team game. Accurate shooting by Wei Ning was backed up by Zoe White and Enya Ouyang. There was good support around the goal circle edge, and strong defence helped with a terrific result. The girls are improving their skills with every game, always putting pressure on the opposition. Awesome work girls. – Karen Braund (Coach)

Year 3/4 White – Saints 9 defeated Seymour 1
This has definitely been the girls’ best game as they were all spreading out, dodging and calling each other’s names. Charlotte was the Captain and played an amazing game, especially in the second-half as Centre. Iris was awesome in GA, continuously going into the free space and trying to shoot every goal she could. Lauren had an astounding game; she shot the first goal in GS and continued to play exceptionally. The girls played really well together, tried their hardest and displayed great sportsmanship. – Maddy Lisle (Student Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 3 defeated Scotch 1
The Open As won again this week. I was so proud of the girls because it was definitely our best game so far and it was great to see all of them implementing the skills we have been learning in training. Our first goal was scored by Millie Wilkin after heading it to herself and then chasing the ball in with a powerful finish. Isabella Villani dribbled past the defenders and shot an amazing second goal in the bottom left-hand corner. Our third and final goal started from a through-ball by defender Adele Russell, then a powerful cross into the box by Chloe Deieso and a quick poke into the goal by Isabella Villani. Special mention to Annie Bradshaw for playing in goals, Louisa Reid, who played goalie in the second-half, and Tahlia Towers for playing up in the As. Great job girls! – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints had a bye

Middle A – Saints 1 defeated by St Michaels 7
The girls faced tough opposition, however, despite the challenge, they were excited to get on the ball. Georgia Barclay and Emily Elston were key players in defence – confidently clearing the balls and chasing down the opposition’s attacks. A special mention must also go to Anushka Rajbhoj for an amazing goal that will definitely be remembered. The girls have had a tough season but, with one game left to go, I hope we can secure a win. – Dom Rigby

Middle B – Saints 1 defeated by Wilderness 3
This was the best game the girls have played; they challenged themselves to defend harder and tried more running with the ball. It paid off with the girls having more opportunities in front of goals, resulting in a few near-misses and, in the end, a goal from Ruby Kirwan. – Kerry Hudson (Coach)

eNews – Week 3, Term 3 2019

Issue no. 23Enews-banner

W3 - Banner 2

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

N Scoggins - webLast week, our students in Years 9, 10 and 11 made their subject selections for next year and so we are now into the complex process of constructing the 2020 timetable. There will always be a small number of students who will be asked to fall back on reserve subject choices and, in short, think as flexibly as possible. It is worth remembering that, by creating timetable blocks based on student choices rather than asking for choices to be made from pre-designed blocks, we as a School are being as flexible as possible from the start of the process.

Making subject choices is often tied in with broader thoughts about ‘what I want to be when I grow up.’ This is a question that many young people dread, of course. Some people know the answer from a young age, but many do not. To complicate things further, the world itself is changing more quickly than ever. There are ex-students of mine, now in their early twenties, working in fields that did not exist when they were making subject selections at school five or six years ago.

Al Alvarez is a respected writer and critic who, in 1999, published his autobiography, entitled “Where Did It All Go Right?” He has lived what seems in many respects to be an enviable life. He is a published novelist and poet, and he wrote a bestselling book inspired by his friendship with Sylvia Plath in the early 1960s. Whilst writing and literary criticism have underpinned his ‘career’, he has also been a world-class poker player and a serious mountaineer, as well as an expert on oil rigs . He turned 90 on Tuesday; his most recent book is about the health benefits of wild swimming in public lakes. Rather than crediting specific subjects, he credits his school years more generally with giving him the appetite for life and new experiences that has served him so well ever since. His life is a salient reminder that we should look to the future with excitement – it is full of possibilities.

Meet our Newest Saints Girls

W3 - New Mid-Year Receptions

The Mid-Year Reception students have settled beautifully into their new classroom. We have had a wonderful and very productive first few weeks of school. The girls have been working hard to learn the routines of school life and enjoyed the many experiences school has to offer. We have been enjoying stories, becoming familiar with the mathematical materials available in the classroom, finding out which picture box we ‘take care of’ on the THRASS chart and enjoying our daily specialist lessons. The girls have already created wonderful self-portraits with oil pastels and water colour in their Art lessons. A highlight was the start of our daily sharing where each student brought a bag with three or four items that they could share with their class so we could all get to know more about each other. I know the remainder of the year will be both positive and rewarding for the girls and their families.

A Message from the Patteson House Captain

W3 - Winter Interhouse

This week, girls in the Middle and Senior Schools will proudly represent their Houses playing five different sports in a contest for the Winter Interhouse shields. The competition kicked off this afternoon with all four Houses showing their skills in Aussie Rules. Tomorrow morning, there will be plenty of action with Soccer, Middle and Senior Netball, Hockey and Badminton.

Winter Interhouse is one of the highly-anticipated events on the calendar, along with Sports Day, Swimming Carnival, Summer Interhouse and Choral Night where the Houses compete against each other in a fun environment. The strength of House spirit at Winter Interhouse is clearly evident by the volume of the cheering and the encouragement that the girls give their teammates. All games bring out the best in the girls as they demonstrate fair play, determination and encouragement.

One of the great things about Winter Interhouse is the ability for every girl to participate. The House team for each sport is predominantly made up of girls who compete in that sport for the School on a regular basis. The remaining positions in the teams are filled with girls who volunteer to play. With five different sports on offer, there is plenty of variety and opportunities for every girl to play, to try a new sport, or provide support and encouragement for their House teams. Interhouse competitions are valuable in facilitating the bonding of girls within a House and between girls in different year levels.

As Patteson House Captain, I am impressed with the enthusiasm of the girls in my House to participate, in particular, those girls who volunteer to fill positions in sports they have never played before. I believe the girls are prepared to put themselves out of their comfort zone because they are confident that the other girls will welcome them into the team and encourage and support them.

Congratulations to the cast and crew on this excellent production!

New Pathways STEM from Uni Program

W3 - STEM

Early in Term 2, four Year 11 students were selected to attend a four day STEM Girls Program run by UniSA. I was lucky enough to be selected along with Emily Downie, Emily Loh and Ehi Oyugbo. The program encourages school-aged girls studying STEM subjects to pursue a career in a STEM-based field through STEM-based activities and by providing industry connections.

So far, we have completed two inquiry days at UniSA’s Magill Campus that have been focused on Biomechanics and the mathematics behind a fireworks show. It has been great to be surrounded by like-minded students from other schools and get a taste of university life. Later this term, we will attend a STEM networking dinner as well as visit a variety of businesses linked to STEM industries which we are all looking forward to!

Footballer Kicking Goals on National Stage

W3 - Football 1

From 27 July, I was fortunate to represent SA in the School Sport Australia Girls 15U Australian Football Championships. The team flew to Launceston on the Saturday and arrived home the following Sunday.

During our time away, we played five games; our team won three and lost the other two to Victoria in a minor round game and the Grand Final. Unfortunately, Victoria were too strong, finishing with a convincing win in the final. However, we were proud to be the first U15 South Australian female team to make a Grand Final. Prior to the carnival, a selection process involved try-out sessions over four consecutive Sundays. A final squad of 25 was then selected which trained for a further five weeks in the lead up to the carnival. We were privileged to have AFLW Crows player Eloise Jones as an Assistant Coach. Eloise was a great mentor and we learnt so much from her. Football plays a significant role in my life. I play for school, Hectorville and Norwood. I found the State experience extremely beneficial as it has enhanced my football skills, thus motivating me to become the best player I can be.

Green Team Unite for Selwyn House Dinner

W3 - Selwyn House Dinner

Selwyn House was transported to the extravagant Met Gala on Friday night after a week of celebrating being green. With the theme of ‘Camp Met Gala’, we had some extraordinary outfits, and literal camping tents, bushes and campers. It was a fun night filled with plenty of food, drinks, dancing and games. It was a great bonding experience for the House and a very enjoyable night.

Special Steps to Help the Homeless

W3 - Walk

Earlier this term, students were asked to consider what they thought were some ‘needs’ in our community. This was a deliberately open-ended task so that they could share the variety of ways in which each person approached the idea.

This led to significant discussion surrounding those who are homeless in our local community, and the challenges they face each day. There are nearly 6,000 people experiencing homelessness in South Australia every year. Some students suggested that it would be helpful if we could act upon this by supporting the Hutt Street Centre.

From a little idea, big things grew. The girls soon discovered that the Hutt Street Centre holds an annual ‘Walk a Mile in My Boots’ event; an awareness campaign to support people doing it tough. What started as a few interested participants increased to approximately 40 students and parents registering to be involved in the walk to not only support those in our community, but to experience what it is like on a cold, winter’s morning to walk one mile to find something to eat and a friendly face. Through their registration alone, the students’ involvement will allow the Hutt Street Centre to provide three hot meals for over 200 people in need.

An excellent example of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Families Dish Up Generous Support

W3 - Volunteers

Our sincere thanks to all the families this year who have so generously cooked soups, pastas and casseroles for the Mary Magdalene Drop In Centre. The Junior School families provided generously last Saturday night when more than 100 patrons of the Centre turned up for dinner.

Many thanks to our parent volunteers on the night: Inca Pearce, Helen Klopf, Cate Eaton, Isabel Tolley and Dorothy Noskovic for heating, serving and washing up with good grace and a ready smile for the patrons.

This was our last opportunity to assist the Centre for 2019, however, we are thrilled to announce that due to the generosity of our families during the year, we will be making a $1200 donation to the Centre which will represent the largest single donation the Centre has received in some time.

Thank you again for your support!

AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL

Open – Saints 1.0-6 defeated by Wilderness 6.6-42
The girls fought hard for the entire game. Despite the score not being in our favour, the girls got better as the match progressed. By the fourth quarter, they were playing like a strong team, talking with each other and laying some hard tackles. It was great to see the girls get muddy towards the end with the small amount of rain we had. Best players were Ellie Anderson, Saskia Jonats and Portia Maerschel. They read the play really well and subsequently made some great marks and tackles. The girls should be proud of their efforts and I can’t wait to see what the next game holds for us. – Isabella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 0.0-0 defeated by Wilderness 3.8-26
The team played a tough game against Wilderness. Chloe Porter played in midfield for most of the match, constantly making strong attacks on the ball. Ellie Humphrey kept a solid approach to the ball, getting it closer and closer to our goal square. Lauren Parton made multiple confident leads and succeeded in dodging away from defenders. Daisy Kennett was also one of our best players thanks to her strong tackles putting lots of pressure on Wilderness. Emily Bryce played very well, making attacks on the ball and getting out of trouble. Well done to these girls for helping out our team! Although we didn’t score, we definitely didn’t make it easy for Wilderness and our communication skills were advancing throughout the game. We all played well together as a whole team and with each game, there is noticeable improvement. – Eva Young

BADMINTON

Last Saturday, our teams won three out of five games against Immanuel, Seymour and Wilderness. Congratulations to the A team girls who once again defeated a strong opponent and remain undefeated so far in the season. The Single 3 and 4 players have had some intense and fabulous games but were unfortunate to lose by just a small margin. We realise that there is still a lot of room for improvement in skills and strategies in dealing with different kinds of opponents. All the girls played really well and demonstrated positive results from the trainings. The Open E girls achieved their best match results of the season, which clearly shows a great effort and improvements. It is wonderful to see the girls playing with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and try new things on court. Well done everyone! – Amy Li (Captain)

Open A – Saints 4 defeated Immanuel 2
Open B – Saints 6 defeated Immanuel 0
Open C1 – Saints 5 defeated Immanuel 1
Open C2 – Saints had a BYE
Open D – Saints 2 defeated by Seymour 4
Open E – Saints 3 defeated by Wilderness 3 (on points)

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 16 defeated Seymour Blue 4
The team played a great first quarter in the rain to lead 12-2 and then it became much heavier and the court was flooding so the game was called off. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 6 defeated by Pembroke 16
The game was cancelled in the second quarter because of conditions. The girls started slow but began to build momentum before the game ended. – Jacob Evans (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 8 defeated by Walford 42
Although the girls didn’t get a win, they still managed to maintain a positive attitude, especially with only having five players. The girls ran hard and never gave up. Penelope scored 6 points with the help of the other girls working as a team. Their defence has improved vastly compared with the previous game, and no matter what the other team threw at them, they never gave up. – Kelly Laird (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open A – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour 2
The girls played a brilliant game against Seymour! Despite the 1 goal score difference, everyone showed improvement from the past few games and fought extremely hard to the end. Well done to Emma Carrodus for scoring off a short corner. All across the field, the girls played well, from Charlotte Creek and Georgina Keough in centre back to Amelie Eaton and Holly Cardone in attack. Congratulations to Emily Whittaker, Georgia Hoskins and Lady Murphy for playing their first game in Open A! – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

Open B – Saints did not play

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 13 defeated Wilderness 4
We played Wilderness at our home grounds at Burnside Lacrosse Club. We started out the first quarter even with both teams scoring 2 goals. In the second quarter, we pulled ahead with 2 more goals despite the amazing effort of the opposition goalie. The girls continued with some beautiful shots ending in another win with Emily Bates and Lara Maione contributing 4 each. – Caitlyn Grayson (Coach)

Under 11 Blue – Saints 11 defeated Eagles 4
It was our third time playing Eagles and the girls performed very well. Neela (Year 3) showed determination when never giving up on ground balls and did well at running hard down the field to be an option in attack. Claris Stolcman (Year 3) positioned herself in front of the goal several times, caught the ball and shot hard around the goalie. Amelia Lively (Year 3) also did well in attack as she caught multiple balls and passed them off quickly to open players. At half-time, the score was 4-all and the girls were eager to win. Ruby Kelly (Year 3) moved herself around the goal to increase her angle to shoot well. Our goalies for the match were Lilly Meo (Year 3) and Chelsea Francis (Year 3) who stopped many goals by using their bodies. It was a great effort by all the girls. Goal scorers were Claris (8), Amelia (2) and Lilly (1). Best players were Neela, Claris and Amelia. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 White – Saints 1 defeated by East Torrens/Payneham 9
It was a tough game for the team as their opposition proved to be strong competition. It took a few quarters for the team to become cohesive and alert, which ETP took advantage of. Despite the score, the team had numerous game plays that showed their improving stick skills and ground balls. A special mention to Lois Burton-Howard who played a wonderful, energetic game. She scored the team’s goal, which was made possible through good teamwork and contribution by all members. Eliza Burmester also played a great game, contributing enthusiastically to the team. At training, we will look at purposeful passes and moving away from defenders to get clear, accurate passes. Good job girls, keep practising as this was a learning opportunity for our team – onwards and upwards! – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 52 defeated Wilderness 32
Saints played an amazing game against Wilderness, winning by a 20-goal margin. Every player knew it was going to be tough, but Saints performed all strategies learnt in training to work the centre corridor and did their best to stick to structure. All girls executed short, sharp and smart passing down the court with Anna White, Sarah Wishart and Alexia Politis showing great patience throwing the ball to Sivi Sivasuthan and Nicolette Miller in the ring. The shooters worked well together, rebounding all missed shots and playing with confidence. Once again, Charlotte White, Ehi Oyugbo and Hannah Freemen were an incredible last line of defence and were outstanding in putting pressure on the goalies and mid-court. A big thank you to Charlotte White, a former player, for filling in and being an excellent addition. Nicolette, Ehi and Hannah were the best players. Nicolette rebounded every goal she missed, giving second efforts and becoming more confident in herself which was easily identified on and off the court. Both Hannah and Ehi were unbelievable in applying continuous efforts in defence and helped keep the oposition’s scoring to a minimum. A great team effort by all! – Sivi Sivasuthan (Captain)

Open B – Saints 16 defeated by Wilderness 33
With all the Open B goalies sidelined with injury or illness, beating Wilderness was always going to be tough task. Amelia Pudney (Open C), Eliza Murray (exchange student) and Adele Eaton (9A team) all worked hard in goals to try create as many opportunities as they could to score. Anda Ceplite did especially well in defence, making consistent intercepts, and Isabella Bernardi worked hard down the court, always being a free option. Despite the score, the girls had a great time playing and worked really hard throughout. They played with a positive spirit, as always, and I wish them all luck in Interhouse! – Eve Habel

Open C – Saints 24 defeated by Wilderness 37
Our team lost to Wilderness after an extremely well-fought game. Wilderness had a very strong team and the girls worked hard defensively to prevent goals. All of them managed to lead and use the space well, converting turnovers into goals. Saints placed pressure on Wilderness as best they could until the very end. Despite this effort, Wilderness proved too good, but many valuable skills have been learned. – Sophie Barr

Open D – Saints 21 defeated by Wilderness 40
Despite losing, our team has significantly improved our play and camaraderie since playing together for the first time at the beginning of Term 2. We are now more familiar with each other’s strategies on court and have grown more comfortable in our positions, which we expect will help us for the rest of the season. A big thank you to Hilary Clark and Grace Richards for filling in for us! – Lucy White

Open E1 (Year 12) – Saints 29 defeated Seymour 28
The girls played a solid game. We didn’t have a strong start as intended in the first quarter. However, we slowly came back. In particular, the last quarter was very strong with both offence and defence getting hands to the ball and working it down the court to successfully finish each turnover with a goal. We will focus on starting future matches strongly and continuing that throughout. – Georgina Bafile

Open E2 (Year 12) – Saints 32 defeated Seymour 14

Year 9A – Saints 34 defeated Wilderness 33
The conditions meant the court was damp, causing the ground to be slippery. It was a slow start, with many little mistakes being made. We lost the first quarter, but we started to play better towards the end, with attackers moving and leading more effectively. The quality of our passes also improved. The second half was a much higher standard and we won both quarters. We started to work better as a team and put continuous pressure on the opposition, causing numerous turnovers. The last quarter was extremely good quality. Our team performed very well under pressure, with us winning by 1 goal. – Ruby Deakin

Year 9B – Saints 27 defeated by Wilderness 45
Although we lost, the girls never gave in. We played a good game and put up a strong fight. Sophie Norman played a great game, getting lots of intercepts. Our attack moved the ball well, with Dayna Petruzzella in GA and GS scoring many goals and securing several intercepts. Even though we didn’t win, we played a great game and never lost spirit. – Sarah Gulliver

Year 9C – Saints 19 defeated by Concordia 31
Even though we lost, we all played reasonably well. We can work on our intercepts and receiving rebounds. The defenders did well at intercepting in the centre third after the centre pass. The attackers were good, and we can improve our passes into and in the goal circle as that was one thing that let us down, but other than that, everyone played well. Even though we didn’t win, there are elements we can work on. – Annie Bafile

Year 9/10 – Saints 6 defeated by Seymour 63
Although all the girls worked really well as a team, the other side had some top shooters and they were very good at intercepting the ball. We need to work on staying on our player and our passing to the right people. Sometimes, when no one comes forward for the ball, it gets intercepted by the opposition. Overall, we tried our best and it was a great game. – Hattie Xu

Year 8A – Saints 46 defeated Wilderness 25
We worked together well in the second half, finishing off the game strongly. Ellie Humphry had an amazing match, playing centre all four quarters and staying committed throughout. Annie Warrick also played a great game in GA. She moved well around the circle, getting most of the goals. Another special mention goes to Maddie Harrex. Despite her injured ankle, she came on in the second half, helping the team to move the ball down the court. – Chloe Porter

Year 8B – Saints 34 defeated Wilderness 11
The 8Bs played a terrific game. Everyone did their best and got the ball down to goal without much difficulty. Our defence was strong and backed up by our Centre, Pearl Richards. Our attack was fast and quick-thinking, especially our shooter Charlotte Staples, who made great leads and scored awesome goals. Our overall passing could be improved, but we made up for it with persistence and energy. Our most reliable player was Grace Beaumont, as she was always in the right place and got in almost every goal. We are constantly learning about how each other plays, and using everyone’s strengths to our advantage. Let’s go Saints! – Samantha Keough

Year 8C – Saints 28 defeated Wilderness 14
The whole team played really well as the opposition was challenging. It was an outstanding game with a lot of plays coming into place. The defence played exceptionally well in trying to bring the ball back into attack. The girls had high intensity which paid off with a well-deserved win. Our defence worked really hard, making intercepts and passing the ball down the court. We had excellent teamwork, which really showed as we carried the ball down to our shooters Lydia Tolley and Georgina Wakeham. Everyone played an outstanding game, and even though it was challenging, we ended up with an amazing win. Coach Lulu Tierney named the best players as Isobel Yelland and myself. – Phoebe Black

Year 7A – Saints 38 defeated Wilderness 14
In the first quarter, we started out really strong and had some good plays in our attacking end into the goal circle. We also made some amazing intercepts in our defensive end, preventing goals. In the second quarter, we started solidly and then had a couple of minutes when Wilderness scored some goals, but we didn’t drop our heads, and we finished the quarter strongly. We did the same throughout the game, securing a great win. – Lilli Bennett

Year 7B – Saints 11 defeated by Wilderness 44
Saints played a tough game against Wilderness. Amazing efforts in defending from Olivia Oakes, and from Ayla Blaskett, Ruby Adams, Ruby Powell and Marcella Tolley in the goal circle. Ayanna Roy and Charlie Edwards played very well in the mid-court, creating many good leads to help get the ball to our shooters. In the first half, we gave the ball to the other team on several occasions, but we stepped up in the second half. Overall, a great effort but unfortunately we were unable to pull out a win. – Stephanie Andrejewskis

Year 7C – Saints 1 defeated by Concordia 40

Year 4 Blue – Saints 10 defeated Wilderness Gold 2
The girls played a great game which ended early due to the heavy rain. Showing their give-and-go skills, moving the ball down the court and passing into goals were Rishita Raghav and Romana W who shot with accuracy. Our 3-feet hands over defence turned over many balls which was great to see. – Karen Braund (Coach)

Year 3/4 White – Saints 1 defeated Wilderness 0
Unfortunately, the game was cancelled half-way through the second quarter but the girls came to the game with a positive attitude. In the first quarter, they were determined for all the loose balls and treasured the balls when they had it in their possession. Good game girls, we can’t wait for the next one.

Year 3 – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 4
The game was cancelled halfway through, but the girls had a good time with many intercepts and rebounds. They also communicated well with each other. They had warmed up enthusiastically, which provided a positive outlook. The girls had a great game and are pumped up for the next one. – Georgia Hoskins

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 0 drew with Seymour 0
The wet, muddy conditions made it difficult to shoot and score goals, which meant that the final score was 0-0. I was very pleased with how the girls played despite the weather. Special mention to Kendra Ware who played goalkeeper for the whole game and didn’t let a single shot in, even a penalty. Millie Wilkin made some very strong tackles and, as always, did a great job as right back. Annie Bradshaw also did a great job in midfield. She intercepted many through-balls and kicked quite a few for Isabella Villani to run onto. In the end, all the girls walked off the field freezing and covered in mud, but all were smiling and proud of our efforts. – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Seymour 4

Middle A – Saints 1 drew with Seymour 1
Despite the dreary weather, the girls started the match determined to put up a fight. With a powerful shot, Lysiane Franchi put us 1 goal up early on, and the girls worked hard to defend their position for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, Seymour managed to score from a scramble after a corner, and Saints did not have enough time to score a second goal. Mary Stavrou and Georgia Barclay should be commended on their continuous hard work throughout. – Dom Rigby

Middle B – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour 5
In a day that saw the weather deteriorate leaving all players (and spectators) cold and wet, the girls braved the elements. Despite a slow start and some confusion in defence which allowed Seymour to score, the girls always enjoyed themselves and improved greatly in the second half. Lila Gosse scored her second of the season, and Saints had a better run of the play which wasn’t rewarded with more goals. – Kerry Hudson (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 2 defeated by Loreto Gold 3
This was a great game. We were down 3-0 at half-time and the girls fought back to almost earn a draw. Awesome goalkeeping from Ash who saved a penalty, and well done to Grace who scored our goals. – Sebastiano Mazzarolo (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 6 defeated Wilderness Orange 0
The girls all had a top game and we got off to a great start. We still need to improve on spreading out and passing the ball. Thank you to all the girls who played for the other team so it would be a fair game. – Lucy Benn (Student Coach)

Year 3/4 – Saints 4 defeated Loreto 0
Friday afternoon marked the official start to the Year 3/4 Soccer season. The game was held at Loreto College and was the first for many of our players. The focus for the week at training had been accurate passing and placing pressure on the opposition, and the girls were quick to put this into practice. Our tight defence, including Lily Forby, Sophie Wiggins and Valentina Patino, efficiently moved the ball out of tricky situations. Beatrice Tolley and Chyndelle Capobianco displayed fierce tenacity when charging at the ball. Both teams had many shots at goal, with Lois Burton-Howard keeping a clean sheet in her first game as goalkeeper. The speed and skills of Lauren Disney impressed everyone who was watching as she slotted through 4 goals in her role as striker.

eNews – Week 2, Term 3 2019

Issue no. 22Enews-banner

W2 - APEX

From the Deputy Principal / Head of Middle School

Richard Lisle inside 220As a result of our ongoing work in the area of Entrepreneurial Education, I was delighted to represent St Peter’s Girls at a national symposium held in Adelaide this week. Monique Green and I spoke about the Year 7 and 8 Futures Program, and how we have approached developing an entrepreneurial mindset in our students, and what we have learnt in the process. There were many questions to the panel of which we were a part, and it was a pleasure to share our experiences with such a knowledgeable and diverse audience.

World leader on Entrepreneurial Education, Yong Zhao, was the keynote speaker. He continues to offer schools the challenge of opening up entrepreneurial pathways to students as a way of preparing them for the Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) work environment that they are likely to face in the near future. Indeed, with the SACE Board looking to include this as an element of each course as part of their course review system, it will become increasingly important. Whilst we still have work to do in this area, it was pleasing to see us being acknowledged as a leader in this growing field. With our success in the recent Shark Tank eSchool competition, the growth and strength of the APEX group, many successful Futures ‘Lemon Project’ companies, and teams reaching the finals of the Search for the Next Tech Girl Superhero competition and the AI for Good Challenge, we have evidence of a growing culture of entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial thinking amongst students and staff.

Science Centre Comes to Life

Construction of our new Science Centre is approaching the home stretch as the building starts to come alive. You may have noticed many changes following the significant progress made during the three-week holiday break.

This week, much work has focused on the external front facade which will be a striking feature to greet families and visitors as they arrive at the School. The internal fit-out is now also underway and we look forward to opening the Science Centre at the start of next term, cementing us as a leader in STEM education.

A Message from our Prefects

W2 - Prefect Article

Every day, as we walk through the corridors, playgrounds and classrooms of our School, we see the faces of so many different girls. And whilst many of the faces of our fellow students may seem familiar to us, the truth is that often we know nothing about the story behind them – apart from what we see during school time. We are lucky to have a school full of diversity. Every girl is unique, has a different background and different passions and, whilst we all go to the same school, everyone’s ‘typical day’ is different. That’s why this term, we are striving to ‘take a walk in the shoes’ of some of the girls at our School and learn a bit about what a day in the life looks like for them. We’re surrounded by so many wonderful, interesting people and it’d be a shame if we didn’t get to learn the story behind the faces!

At each Assembly this term, the Prefects will be chatting to a couple of different girls from various year levels. Through these discussions, we hope to learn about the passions, backgrounds and daily challenges of each girl by finding out what they get up to before and after school, their interactions with family and friends, and simply what makes them different to the girl next to them! In the weeks following the discussions, we will strive to ‘take a walk in their shoes’ by completing a small challenge that each girl will set for us, giving us a taste of their daily life.

Kicking off our initiative this week, a couple of the prefects were lucky to chat to Anushrii Nair from Year 12 who shared how her Malaysian culture is integrated into her daily life and set us the challenge to try one of her culture’s delicious foods for ourselves. We also got to hear from Aroha Munroe, Year 11, who shared with us her gruelling fitness routine, starting at 4.30am! Aroha challenged us to try doing some physical activity before school. Thanks to these girls for participating, and we are super excited to ‘take a walk in the shoes’ of some more girls over the rest of the term.

Old Scholars’ 125th Anniversary Celebration

W2 - Old Scholars 2

Our last day of Term 2, Friday 28 June, was a significant day in our 125th anniversary year as we welcomed over 230 Old Scholars to celebrate this significant milestone in our history, as well as St Peterstide.

The day commenced with a morning School Tour, where a number of small groups were guided by our Year 9 event leaders on a journey throughout the buildings and grounds to highlight all of our new and exciting projects and facilities. Our Old Scholars then joined with the School community for the traditional St Peterstide Eucharist. It was an honour to have Sister Linda Mary CSC assist with our service.

The 125th Anniversary Lunch for Old Scholars in the Arts Centre was a memorable occasion and the first time we had hosted an event such as this at Saints Girls. Over 120 Old Scholars enjoyed champagne and a two course lunch, with entertainment provided by our talented Music students featuring a stunning vocal performance by Emma Kavanagh (Kilburn ’14). 125th commemorative merchandise was for sale as well as the popular Bottle Tombola.

The Arts Centre was then transformed to host the Old Scholars’ Reunion Cocktail evening where more than 100 Old Scholars enjoyed drinks and canapes whilst reminiscing over photo boards. A reflective Memories of Saints Girls multimedia presentation provided many smiles, laughs and cheers for the featured alumni – 2014, 2009, 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989, 1979, 1969, 1959 and 1949 – some of whom went on to continue their celebration together.

Food for Thought on Business Excursion

W2 - World of Food

As part of the Year 10 World of Food subject unit on Entrepreneurial Thinking and Technology used in the Food and Hospitality Industry, students visited two local businesses. We started our day at Continental Taralli Biscuits, a family-owned business which manufactures a variety of Italian biscuits. The students tasted the many products in the range and discussed the expansion of the business to include distribution across Australia and the impact this has had on the technology required in the bakery. We observed Tarallis being produced and were able to meet the family members who are an important part of this business. Marketing strategies were also quite evident with the use of two brands and types of labelling, and modern and contemporary packaging.

Mercato were next on our tour. The class tasted and discussed the origins of a variety of products that Mercato import from Italy such as cheese, olives, biscuits and wafers. We also saw a demonstration of Tiramisu. Jianna discussed the history of the business and its expansion over time and the strong business connection to family in the business.

The World of Food class will now be able to use the information gathered to set up a small-scale business which will involve the trialling and sensory evaluation of Tiramisu and Tarallis amongst other products as selected by the students.

We would like to thank Continental Taralli Biscuits and Mercato for taking the time to speak to the students and welcome us in to their businesses.

Decisions Ahead After Subject Expo

W2 - Subject Expo

It was great to see so many parents and students at the Senior School Subject Expo last Thursday. The representatives from the local universities were busy fielding questions and providing information about courses. Our teachers were on hand to answer queries about next year’s subjects and to offer their advice. Over the next two weeks, the students’ subject choices will be fed into our timetabling program and subject blocks will be created. This may then require some of the students to have further conversations with me, the IB and SACE coordinators, and their teachers, particularly if any clashes are generated. If you have any questions about this process over the next few weeks, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Water Polo Girls Thrive in the Deep End

W2 - Water Polo

South Australia’s Under 16 Girls’ Water Polo team recently travelled to Sydney to represent the State in the Australian Interstate Water Polo Championship. Our team had three Saints Girls: Emily Baldwinson (Year 9), Saskia Jonats (Year 10) and Stephanie Smalls (Year 10). We went through a selection process at our weekly trainings and played games against other girls to see who would fit the mould better and which girls have more skill and confidence in the water.

For four days, we played two games each day. This was very tiring, however, it was a good challenge and it was interesting to see how South Australia would perform against some of the best water polo teams in Australia. We played all of our games at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatics Centre – the same pool where the Olympics were held! We ended up winning two games, our first again Canberra and the other against a New South Wales’ team, and we came 8th out of 11 teams.

All of us really enjoyed our week in Sydney and gained valuable experience from the tournament. We are so proud of our team performance as we improved a lot over the week and put up a fight in every game. Thank you to Water Polo South Australia for selecting us – we are very grateful for the opportunity to represent our State!

Video Professional Captures Imagination

W2 - APEX guest

“During Term 2, the girls in Years 7 and 8 had the opportunity to listen to a talk by Mel Macpherson, a well-respected freelance camera operator who has worked in her industry for many years and has gained much experience during her time. Mel had lots of interesting and inspiring experiences to share with us, and helped us learn a lot about using the technology around us to share our passions and ideas. Her talk was inspiring and she taught us many helpful new skills.” – Mary Stavrou

“Mel Macpherson explained to us so much about connecting with the camera and how to use it effectively. Mel also showed us the importance of angles and how long you keep the shot going for. She really inspired us to use the skills we have gained through practice and to share them with the world.” – Lucy Schirripa

AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL

Open – Saints 4.3-27 defeated by Immanuel 8.7-55
For their first hit-out for this term, the girls played an outstanding game of footy. Although the score was not in our favour, this does not reflect the quality of footy the girls demonstrated. They fought hard for the ball and worked well together as a team, which explains how we managed to win the second half. Special mention must go to Molly Lucas who scored an amazing goal, as well as Sarah Wishart who fought hard for the ball the entire game. Once again, this game highlighted the extreme improvement these footballers have made and their efforts must be commended. Can’t wait to see what the next game has in store for the team. – Isabella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 1.1-7 defeated by Immanuel 4.3-27
Saints had one previous encounter last year against Immanuel with Saints being beaten, but a solid four-quarter effort from all the girls showed our improved skills. Pressure all over the ground, particularly from Adele Eaton’s strong marks at full-back, Chloe Porter and Kate Hunt’s excellent efforts in half-back and ruck, and Emily Teague’s tackles in the middle, limited Immanuel’s scoring opportunities. A special mention for a great game also to Lauren Parton. Chase Hocking’s fantastic movement across the ground resulted in Saints’ goal with Grace Richards also contributing a point. – Charlie Fishlock

BADMINTON

Last Saturday was the first round for Term 3, and Saints Girls had excellent results winning 4 out of 5 matches. Congratulations to all players for their efforts. The Open B team again pulled off an amazing performance, showcasing their strength in badminton skills and teamwork. There were some close matches from both of the C teams; the girls played calmly and cleverly, utilising game strategies to achieve victory. Even though the Open E girls had an unfortunate loss against Wilderness, all players showed improvement. A number of girls demonstrated a smart style of playing. Well done to all the girls for their enthusiasm and effort on court. We are looking forward to more excellent performance this season. – Amy Li (Captain)

Open A – Saints did not play
Open B – Saints 6 defeated Westminster 0
Open C1 – Saints 5 defeated Wilderness 1
Open C2 – Saints 3 defeated Wilderness 3 on points
Open D – Saints 5 defeated Walford 1
Open E – Saints 2 defeated by Wilderness 7

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 33 defeated Seymour 14
A great game to start the term. The team took a little while to get going but then played really well together, supporting each other and sharing the ball. As the game went on, we got better and scored 16 points in the last quarter. Everyone played well and contributed to a good team win. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 24 defeated by Pembroke 36
The girls played well against Pembroke with some great forward play pushing the ball up the court. They had some great opportunities but couldn’t quite finish. – Jacob Evans (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 10 defeated by Wilderness 52
The match started with great enthusiasm. Some players are new to basketball, but Saints listened to instruction and put up a huge fight, managing to put 4 points up on the score board within the first quarter. In the second quarter, the team communicated more to help each other. With a strong Wilderness defence, we found scoring difficult but that didn’t stop the girls from trying their hardest.

During the second half, the girls managed to rebound the ball, with Georgia Libri rebounding almost every shot. We then scored some points, with Iszabella Lochowiak and Charlize Cameron-Chilver getting a goal each. Many players started to contribute with rebounds, dribbling and stealing the ball, which made me proud. In the last quarter, the girls were getting tired, but they tried their hardest and Penelope Gapes scored the last goal of the game. – Kelly Laird (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 12
Saints played Pembroke who had three State players, providing them with a very strong and experienced team. Despite the score line, the girls demonstrated improvement throughout the game. Our goalie Alice Reid was under the pump for the majority of the game but managed to make some extraordinary saves from shots off short corners. Although our front line had few opportunities, Amelia Lucas created and nearly converted two attacking plays. – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

Open B – Saints 2 defeated Scotch 0
The girls played a controlling game over Scotch; our forward pressure and structure resulted in Scotch not entering the circle at all. Tilly McCormack scored the first goal followed by Georgia Hoskins scoring a deflection on a short corner. The girls had many chances, but the end result was a 2-0 win. All the girls played a fantastic game and the structure was the best it has been all year. – Will Stapleton (Coach)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 4 defeated by Glenelg 8
The girls played against Glenelg again, our biggest rival this season. We started out the first quarter even, with both teams getting a goal each and lots of possession in our end. We struggled getting the ball out of the centre, resulting in Glenelg having a 4-goal lead at the beginning of the last quarter. The girls fought hard in the midfield and defence, making plenty of turnovers and coming back with 3 goals in the fourth quarter, but unfortunately Glenelg were too good. – Caitlyn Grayson (Coach)

Under 11 Blue – Saints 5 defeated by Wilderness 11
Neela (Year 3) ran hard for every ground ball. Ruby Kelly (Year 3) did some great defence by sticking close to her opposition player, and in attack, she moved around the goal circle to try shoot goals. In addition, Lilly Meo (Year 3) showed her improving stick skills by catching several balls in attack. In the first half, Matilda Birmingham (Year 3) was our goalie, who showed confidence and stopped several shots on her. Chelsea Francis (Year 3) fought hard for ground balls and showed initiative when going behind the goal in case a shot was missed. Amelia Lively (Year 3) made multiple intercepts in defence and transitioned the ball well by running down the field. Goal scorers were Amelia (1), Chelsea (1), Lilly (1), Matilda (1) and Ruby (1). Best players were Amelia and Ruby. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 White – Saints 5 defeated St Aloysius 3
The team certainly challenged themselves against St Aloysius. All team members contributed well to the game play, with our ground ball scooping improving significantly and strong stick skills (the catching and throwing drills have proved helpful). Special mention to goalie Lois Burton-Howard who bravely defended the goals; we’re pleased to have you back in lacrosse! Claris Stolcman played an exceptional game, scoring the team’s 5 goals. At training, we will focus on close defence and ball movement. Congratulations Saints 2! – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 40 defeated by Immanuel 53
After nearly a month of rest, what an incredible effort put forward by all seven players. The girls knew that this particular game against Immanuel was going to be tough, but they accepted this challenge and were able to play one of the best games so far this season. At the start, both teams were neck-and-neck scoring goal after goal. Saints started strongly by swiftly transitioning the ball mid-court to the goal third, allowing goalies to score quickly. Each quarter, Saints proceeded to place pressure on Immanuel as best they could and played the game until the end regardless of the score. Every girl played tremendously well, which made it difficult to choose the best players. However, four stood out for their determination and willpower. Sivi Sivasuthan, Hannah Freeman, Alexia Politis and Anna White all played a magnificent game, showcasing the different skills learnt at training. The defenders constantly applied pressure to Immanuel’s attack and transitioned the ball down the court effectively to the shooters to score. Great game girls! – Sivi Sivasuthan (Captain)

Open B – Saints 20 defeated by Immanuel 51
Despite the score, the girls were very grateful for the handful of players coming up to fill-in for our walking wounded team. The ball worked smoothly down to our goal ring, but considering two of our three shooters were absent, we relied upon Jessica Wishart to carry the team which she achieved. The girls in attack were all fit and agile, outrunning the opposition. Our defence was strong and worked well together to prevent Immanuel from smoothly moving the ball. The girls always keep their heads up and are looking forward to a win next time! – Eve Habel

Year 8C – Saints 35 defeated Concordia 5
In the first quarter, we were all a bit slow as some of us didn’t play netball at all over the holidays and it was also freezing cold. When we began the second quarter, we all started getting back into the swing of things which resulted in the other team only scoring 1 goal in the second quarter. Bel Burmester made so many amazing intercepts and this probably helped us gain the win. Our defence was really tight in every single third, so in the third and fourth quarters, Concordia didn’t score a single goal. They made some amazing intercepts as well, but Saints would always find a way to turn it around. The girls also started to use corridors and pockets more in this game, which helped us to get the ball down fast to the shooters (Georgina Wakeham and Lydia Tolley). All the girls contributed to the win, especially Isabel Burmester, Mikaela Udall and Isabella Lowry. – Nathara Perera
