New Library and Middle School Official Opening

This week marked another landmark moment in our School’s history as we officially opened our new Library and Middle School.

Joined by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, Anglican Archbishop Geoffrey Smith, fellow dignitaries, members of the Board, donors, Old Scholars, parents, staff and students, Wednesday afternoon’s event was a truly wonderful occasion.

The new facilities feature open and flexible learning spaces that harness natural light and transparency. Vibrant design elements, versatile furniture and stunning views across Ferguson Conservation Park allow our girls to be inspired.

The stunning projects are the latest stages to be completed in the School’s Master Plan, which is delivering cutting-edge spaces and places for the learners of today and tomorrow.

Swimming Carnival 2018

W4 Swimming Carnival

Saints Girls made a splash in the pool during the Years 4 – 12 Swimming Carnival today.

Adelaide Aquatic Centre was transformed into a sea of blue, red, yellow and green as girls split into their Houses, diving head-first into serious and novelty events.

Cheers and chants filled the venue and, as always, the costumes had as much flair as some of the swimming strokes.

By the close of proceedings, Selwyn House was jubilant, claiming the coveted overall shield.

The McGill Shield for Swimming

Selwyn House – 1984 points
Patteson House – 1684 points
Kilburn House – 1639 points

From the Deputy Principal / Head of Senior School

W4 KM Article

Schools, on one hand, are very predictable places. They run to a strict timetable, each member of the school, whether it be a student or staff member, knows where they are meant to be each minute of every single day. We all know the expectations placed upon us, and our behaviours often reflect these. Even the times we eat and socialise are set out, without us having to make a conscious choice to do so. It is this routine and predictability that make schools safe and effective learning establishments.

But there is always that week which is unpredictable, where our routine is put to the side to allow important and exciting events to occur. The week we have just had, was an example of this.

Monday saw the official launch of our new #EMPOWHER wellbeing program. Cycling great Anna Meares spoke to students from Years 6 – 12, and impressed upon us all how hard work, determination and planning can set you apart from the pack. It is very rare that you are afforded the opportunity to listen to a person who, for some years, was the very best at what they do in the entire world.

Anna reminded the girls that it is not the big things that will ensure their success. Rather, it is little things they do each day that will determine if they do indeed meet the goals they have set. Given the breadth of her achievements, she started her talk with a strong message: “I have lost more world titles than I have won.”

Perhaps my favourite line was one she provided to me and then shared with the girls (at my request). Anna was due at school at 11.30am for set up to ensure a 12pm start. Many speakers will not arrive until 15 minutes prior, so 30 minutes is ample. Anna arrived at 11am and when I apologised for not being at the Front Office to meet her, she simply said, “Kate, if you are not early, you’re late.” You can’t fault that.

Feedback from staff and the girls has been extremely positive, and I hope that many of them discussed Anna’s talk with you. There was certainly much to take away and the Prefects will be following this up at Assembly next week.

On Wednesday, we had the official opening of our new Library and Middle School. It was wonderful to listen to His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia, speak of the Sisters who established Saints Girls and liken their journey to a new country, to his own experience of leaving Vietnam after the war. It is important to be mindful and reflect upon the fact that the buildings we now have, as well as future plans, would never have been possible if the Sisters had not met their original goal.

Finally, today was our annual Swimming Carnival. Much credit should go to Year 12, who have led the School enthusiastically to date. They have encouraged the girls to participate widely and it was evident today that their efforts have paid off. My thanks also to our Sports and PE staff. The administrative preparation that goes into events such as these is at times lost in the excitement that surrounds the day.

A Message from our Head Prefect

W4 Head Prefect2

The beginning of our school year always sees students step outside their comfort zones, overcome challenges and find new passions. This has already been evident in the new year as girls have taken on sports, ensembles and other opportunities the School has to offer. A great example is the lead up to the long-awaited Swimming Carnival. Our Year 12s have been working tirelessly in preparing costumes and chants for the big day, not to mention all the students from Years 4 – 12 completing time trials and sign-ups for the many races and novelty events.

As students arrived on the first day, there was an evident rush of excitement as people went to admire the new facilities and renovations completed throughout the holidays. Those in the Middle and Senior Schools have been enjoying the many state-of-the-art study and collaboration spaces in our new Library. On Wednesday, we celebrated the official opening of the Library and Middle School, where we had the honour of hosting His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia. It caused me to reflect on how lucky we are as students to have spaces that make us feel comfortable and focused at school, thus helping us to reach our full potential.

This week also saw the launch of our School’s new wellbeing program, #EMPOWHER. It aims to give girls strategies and tools to improve in a wide range of areas including stress management, social media, body image, and how to maintain balance between personal life and school. As a part of this, we welcomed world-renowned cyclist Anna Meares who even brought three of her six Olympic medals to show us. She spoke of her challenging and inspirational career, offering advice that deeply resonated with those in the audience. Year 9 student Portia Maerschel and I had the unique opportunity to interview Anna and hear her approaches to positive self-talk, maintaining perspective and regulating emotions in the lead up to high-pressure events. A valuable take-away was that, when approaching demanding goals, one mustn’t focus on the end-point but rather the process that takes us there as this is the only part truly within our control.

In other exciting news, the 2018 Prefect Team has been working hard in kicking off our theme for this year, ‘Dare to be.’ This vision aims to see Saints Girls come together, have fun and accept new challenges. We want girls to stop saying, “I wish” and start saying, “I will.” This begins with our first school-wide initiative, the Term 1 Bucket List, which encourages interaction between year levels and accomplishment of new goals. It is a list of tasks for each class to try complete by the end of the term, with an exciting prize for the class who finishes first. We cannot wait to embrace new experiences and check-in with other students as to what they have managed to achieve. Another part of this theme has been to strengthen our School community as Prefects by spending time outside during lunch and after-school to meet with younger students. This has proven very enjoyable for the Prefects and junior girls alike, and I must say my lunches have never been filled with so many smiling faces and piggy backs! We are excited to progress with more initiatives as the year progresses and look forward to making Saints Girls an even more daring and uplifting environment along the way.

Year 6 Leadership Induction

W4 Year 6 Leaders

On Tuesday, our Year 6 students were inducted into their leadership roles for 2018 during a special Chapel Service in front of their families and friends. This was an important occasion and an opportunity for the girls to reflect on the skills and dispositions that they will develop and use during the coming year.

The girls have been thinking about what it is that makes a good leader, and they are committed to carrying out their roles to the best of their ability.

Each group of leaders prepared their own mission statement to read out during the service, using research from their current Unit of Inquiry around the central idea, ‘Everyone has the ability and opportunity to demonstrate leadership.’

Music Camp Raises Funds for Ardrossan

W4 Music Camp

Towards the end of Week 3, many of our Music students ventured to Ardrossan to participate in the 2018 Music Camp. On Saturday at 3pm, a concert was held to raise money for the Ardrossan Community Hospital. A grand total of $1470 was raised for this good cause, ending the camp on a high note once more. Some of the Year 12s provided a reflection on their final camp:

“My last Music Camp as a Saints Girl was an incredible experience, filled with challenges, snacks from the Ardrossan Foodland and, of course, music. Each day was full of rehearsals and workshops to hone techniques, build upon skills and develop stylistic understandings, leaving each camper pretty exhausted, but with a satisfying sense of progress. In the five years I have attended this camp, its highlight has remained the same: developing friendships with girls across the School who share a like passion and appreciation for music. The camp emphasises the importance music has in society, in that it provides a platform for self-expression, encourages bonding between year levels and, above all else, is a celebration of creativity in each of us.” – Charlene Lee (Music Captain)

“It was a pleasure being able to experience my final Music Camp surrounded by so many supportive and passionate girls. I loved being a part of the Year 12 team because it allowed me to organise activities for younger year levels and provide a sense of entertainment and, furthermore, a sense of community.” – Felicia Mi

“Music Camp is always a highlight of my year, offering intensive rehearsal and workshop time while always giving girls the opportunity to make new friendships and lasting memories. I always leave camp feeling so proud of what I and my music family have managed to accomplish, and thus so inspired to keep reaching new heights throughout the year. This year was no exception, as both Enchanté and Stage Band took on more repertoire than usual, adding even more rigour (and excitement) to camp. Being the last of my seven music camps, I found myself reflecting on so many cherished moments from previous years which have helped shape some of my closest friendships.” – Antonia Kirsten-Parsch

“It was such an incredible experience to be surrounded by girls of all ages, backgrounds and upbringings, each with their own unique identities and perspectives, and somehow still feel connected to each other in a mutual exchange of something which surpasses the music itself.” – Therese Kemp

“Having attended the very first year of Music Camp in 2011 as a Year 5, watching new girls come and experience it has been one of my highlights. I have also enjoyed the way that camp enables girls to form friendships and connections with different year levels, while learning new things from the amazing staff who mentor us each year.” – Tiff Babidge

Warm Reception for Children’s Author

W4 Reception

This term, the Reception girls are exploring the central idea that, ‘People play many roles in the communities to which they belong.’

Best-selling children’s author Katrina Germein visited Mrs Liddy’s and Miss Karvonen’s classes on Thursday 22 February. This gave the girls the opportunity to find out about her role as an author.

They thoroughly enjoyed listening to Katrina read a few of her stories, including ‘Big rain coming’, ‘Thunderstorm dancing’ and ‘My Mum says the strangest things’.

As she read her books, Katrina engaged the girls through the use of singing, puppets, musical instruments and role play. They had fun making the sounds of rain and thunder, and meeting her friendly puppets. They were most interested in hearing Katrina talk about how she thought of the ideas for her stories and how her books were made.

The Reception girls and teachers would like to thank Katrina for visiting St Peter’s Girls, and sharing her stories and experiences. The girls are inspired to explore book-making and become authors themselves, and Mrs Liddy and Miss Karvonen can’t wait to read their stories!

Saints Girls Enjoy Life on the Fringe

Following two sold-out Fringe seasons, Promise Adelaide is once again presenting ‘Musical Moments’, and this year a companion show, ‘Divas’. Several of our Saints’ Music girls will perform after participating in an audition process late last year against many up and coming young singers in Adelaide.

‘Musical Moments’ is an exploration of musical theatre and film through solo, duet and group performances. There are three shows featuring different performers singing numbers from across the genre. ‘Divas’ is a similar format, but instead focuses on divas from the 40s to current day, with songs from Shirley Bassey, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga and more.

The girls’ performances are:

Musical Moments show 1 (28 Feb) – Zoe Pool
Musical Moments show 2 (2 March) – Zoe O’Callaghan
Musical Moments show 3 (5 March) – Daisy Kennett, Emma Pool and Zara Blight
Divas show 2 (7 March) – Isabelle Norman

We congratulate the girls and wish them luck!

Middle C – Saints 31 defeated Wilderness 15

ROWING

Over the weekend at the Super School Series hosted by Walford, Saints had another day of successful racing. There were some great performances and a good opportunity for the girls to row with windy conditions along the course, which made for quick but rough water. The seniors performed well in their heat placing third, four seconds off Scotch and multiple seconds in front of Seymour. The conditions in the final were rocky and rough, and ultimately the girls placed fourth due to a crab of the oar. Completing the day with a 4km run rounded off a great day of fitness. – Olivia Compare (Captain of Boats)

This week, the Inter Bs consisting of Emily Downie, Imogen Parkinson, Keely Flannagan and Michelle Rupert raced twice. In the heat, the girls came second and were very happy in the way they rowed. They were then through to the A final and started strongly. As the race progressed, the girls’ rowing looked better than it ever has. Even though they came third, they were extremely satisfied. They worked really well together this week, especially with the seating and crew changes. They should be very proud of the effort they are putting in and the results they are getting. – Abbie Lisle (Cox)

Year 9A Rowing
The School Premiership Series #2 was held at West Lakes last Saturday. With only four weeks to go to Head of the River, our crew of Keely Flannagan, Ella Waltham, Olivia Kelly, Sophie Barr and Jodi Papendorf are starting to get excited and a bit nervous. We placed second both in the heat and in the final with a very tight finish. – Jodi Papendorf (Cox)

This week, I was able to cox the 9B crew of Anda Ceplite, Thuhansa Hattotuwa, Rose Young and Molly Bond. The girls rowed well together and really pushed through the race. In the heat, they came third advancing into the A final where they crabbed at the beginning but came back. They ended up coming sixth but the girls were still happy in the way they rowed. They are going to keep pushing hard for the next three weeks. – Abbie Lisle (Cox)

On Saturday, the Inter A crew featuring Charlotte Sellars (stroke), Bella Bernardi (three seat), Emma Carrodus (two seat), Hannah Keough (bow) rowed really well. We placed fourth in the heat, which meant we progressed into the A crew final where we placed seventh. Due to sickness and injury, many crew changes have occurred and the girls have started to work well together. – Charlotte Creek

SOFTBALL

Open A – Saints 3 defeated Scotch 2
This weekend’s game was a great success for the Open A softball team, with a narrow victory. Facing a pitcher with a throw in the 90s, the girls batted extremely well. Fielding during this game was also a very high standard, with a range of easy outs demonstrated by the girls. A fantastic effort this week for the softball squad. I am very proud of you all! Enjoy your weekend off. – Lulu Tierney (Captain)

Open C – Saints 16 defeated Scotch 3
This was a terrific performance for the girls’ second game, defeating Scotch. All of them are progressing with catching, throwing and batting. Emily Bryce did an excellent job in pitching, while Joss Forster played an outstanding game on third base, catching lots of fly balls. It was great to see all the girls come out positively and play an awesome game. – Millie Wilkin (Year 10)

TENNIS

Premier League
The Open As had a convincing 6 sets to 0 win over Scotch. Tiana Glazbrook had an impressive victory over Scotch’s number 1, followed by Yasmin Glazbrook, Sienna Glazbrook and Olivia Harby all rising to the level to secure wins in singles and doubles.

Premier League Reserves
Open Bs’ number 1 Annabel Baldwinson led her team to victory for a 6 sets to 0 win over Scotch. Annabel and Mia Dodd performed to a high standard, winning their doubles, while Imogen Nienaber maintained good concentration to take out her singles 6-5. – Yasmin Glazbrook (Captain)

Junior Division 3
Alexandra 4-0
Gloria 6-0
Lily 2-4

(played up to 4 due to time)

Doubles
Alexandra and Lily 4-3

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Open C – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 2
Despite the final result, our team’s play significantly improved from the previous game. Our focus was to initiate the touch, have players mark a particular person and ensure our players call who is shooting to touch an opponent. This game, our communication during play greatly improved, as well as the fast pace of our rucking which was achieved by our players making sure the dummy-half always had somebody to pass to. Our aim for the next game is for our players to drop back five metres while defending to ensure that we are not caught offside. In training this week, we have also been developing a plan to carry out after our first three touches in order to get a try. – Lucy White

WATER POLO

Congratulations to Emily Baldwinson who has been selected to represent South Australia as part of the Adelaide Jets Team at the 14 & Under National Club Championships in Albury/Wodonga on 28 March through to 2 April.

Enews – Week 3, Term 1 2018

Issue no. 3Enews-banner

Introducing our new Director of Teaching and Learning

N Scoggins - webMy favourite teacher was a man called Roger Langley. He was Head of English at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School in England. I experienced Mr Langley’s lessons for the first time in Year 9 and such was the impact of his teaching that choosing English Literature in my final two years of school was a no-brainer: it meant being in Mr Langley’s class again. And those final two years did not disappoint; my love for great writing can be traced back to those lessons in what were old and austere classrooms. The simple fact is that, without the influence of Roger Langley on my life, it would almost certainly have taken a different path and I would not be writing this eNews piece for you today.

So, what was it that set him apart from the other teachers? Firstly, it was the way he gently controlled his environment by being softly spoken rather than by raising his voice. Secondly, it was his style of marking, where three ticks in the margin meant that you had written something that genuinely impressed him. Thirdly, he seemed to know everything there was to know about the texts he taught, but always listened with interest to the ideas of his students. Most important of all, though, was the abiding sense that the love of books, and the desire to share that passion, was in his blood. I spoke in last week’s Academic Assembly about the oft-unheralded potential for happiness that exists in doing academic work; there is no doubt that I positively enjoyed writing Mr Langley’s essays and awaited his grades and comments (which often ran to several pages) with nervous excitement. In the course of completing my university degree, I encountered many charismatic, eccentric and memorable professors and tutors but the pinnacle of my education was English Literature lessons at school.

Teachers have that capacity to make a fundamental difference to people’s lives. My journey has brought me to St Peter’s Girls’ School, and there cannot be very many other schools around the world where so many ingredients are in place for students to be engaged and inspired, and to head home with stories to tell and questions to share. Even Mr Langley would have struggled to imagine classrooms and views as amazing as those we have here in the new Middle School. Teachers in 2018 help their students in ways that perhaps were just not on the radar in the 1980s – I don’t recall Mr Langley ever referring to assessment criteria, or helping me to re-draft a clunky paragraph, or ever getting us into pairs or groups to develop our independent learning skills. He didn’t have access to a learning management system, such as Canvas, where he could have shared his notes, provided recommendations for further reading and uploaded his feedback where parents could also have accessed it. The worlds of education and technology have changed enormously since my school days; we know more than ever before about how students learn and how we as teachers can lead, influence, encourage, facilitate and perhaps even transform.

I am excited to now be a part of the Saints Girls’ community and I look forward to working alongside you all in 2018 and beyond. I hope and trust that there will be a great many “Mr. Langley moments” for your daughters both inside and outside the classroom this year.

Nigel Scoggins
Director of Teaching and Learning

Year 9s Buoyant on Aquatics Camp

W3 Year 9 Camp

The Year 9 Aquatics Camp was held at the Murraylands Aquatic Centre last Thursday and Friday. It is a kick-start to The Rite Journey wellbeing program that we run in Home Groups. Being in such a different setting offers an opportunity for girls to build relationships, challenge themselves in various aquatic activities and get to know each other. It was also a great escape from the hot weather in the city.

While this year it was not an overnight camp but two separate day trips, the girls still had a fabulous time away. On the first day, the girls tried knee boarding, paddle boarding and sailing. We then drove back to the Murraylands for day two on the water, which included water skiing, kayaking and learning how to drive small boats.

Well done to all the girls who had a go at these activities and pushed their comfort zones. You helped make this camp such a success!

Year 3s Explore Urrbrae Wetlands

W3 Year 3 Excursion

On Friday 9 February, the Year 3s went to the Urrbrae Wetlands to discover the animals that live in this habitat. They collected samples of water and considered its turbidity then observed macro-invertebrates under microscope before classifying and naming them. They were amazed to see such detail and had many interesting questions to ask the Urrbrae Wetlands Educator, Anne Louise.

The Year 3s came back to school armed with more knowledge and understanding through first-hand experience about how “human actions can preserve or endanger animal life”.

Shrove Tuesday Feast on Chiverton Lawns

W3 Pancake

It was a perfect, sunny day when the Junior School girls gathered on Chiverton Lawns this week to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, which marks the final day before Lent. Traditionally, Christians would give up butter, milk or eggs during Lent to commemorate Jesus’ journey into the desert for 40 days. In order to minimise wastage, people would often use up these goods by making them into pancakes. This is why Shrove Tuesday is also commonly referred to as Pancake Tuesday.

During class time, students discussed the different ways in which Shrove Tuesday is celebrated around the world. They also learnt about how other cultures have different names for Shrove Tuesday, such as Sprengidagur or “Bursting Day” in Iceland. Finally, students read about some of the amazing world records held for pancake flipping, pancake making, and about the world’s largest pancake which was 15 metres in diameter!

“I thought it was a great idea to share pancakes on Shrove Tuesday because it has the religious background to it and they were yummy!” – Iszabella

“This is the day that people used to make pancakes to use up all of the fat in their fridge. After that, you have to give something up for 40 days and nights, just like Jesus did.” – Grace

“Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. Christians would fast for Lent. Now we give up something for Lent.
People used to make pancakes to use up the food before Lent.” – Annie and Rose

“Shrove Tuesday means Easter is coming up and Jesus died on Easter. We make pancakes to use up the eggs, flour and butter.” – Sophie

“I like the cream on the pancakes because it’s yummy!” –  Michelle

Year 5s Enjoy Golden Trip

W3 Year 5 Excursion

On Monday of Week 3, Year 5 students ventured to the Adelaide Hills to visit the Jupiter Creek Goldfields in Echunga as part of our Unit of Inquiry, “Gold Fever”. This unit investigates the Central Ideas: The discovery of any resource has challenges, consequences and opportunities.

The purpose of this visit was two-fold. Firstly, we were exploring South Australia’s role in the gold rushes which changed Australia, and provoking the girls’ thinking towards how the area was impacted and what went on in our own State. The other purpose was to write an expository letter to the Adelaide Hills Council. This letter addresses the girls’ perceptions of the site and its historical significance, and includes suggestions to the Council for improvements to the area. Should we have any success with our proposals to improve this site as a tourism spot, we will certainly let the community know.

Business Intelligence in Action

W3 Business and Enterprise

On Friday of Week 2, students in Mrs Green’s Stage 1 Business and Enterprise class went on an excursion to meet their project mentors at Exposé. During Term 1, students will be working with Exposé to simulate how businesses use data to solve real problems. Students were split into two teams and were allocated a customer, ‘The Trip Centre’ and Cotton Off Clothing’. Each team was provided with a business problem and sets of data to help them understand the business requirements. Students will communicate with their subject matter expert and their customer on a regular basis where they will need to complete weekly project status reports and a business requirements document. Students will present their solution to their customer using Power BI later this term.

Welcome Drinks on the Lawns

W3 Drinks on the Lawns

Last Friday night saw a huge turnout for the annual Drinks on the Lawns, proudly put on by the Parents’ & Friends’ Association. Thank you to everyone who came along and braved the heat to make the night such a success. It was a great opportunity for parents to reconnect with old friends, meet new families and get to see the staff let their hair down a little. Julia had some inspiring words to say about the year ahead for our girls and conducted an impromptu tour of our amazing new Library and Middle School facilities. A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the night. Special thanks to the Year 12 girls for giving up a Friday night to serve food to the hungry masses.

We are truly grateful for how the community has come together to celebrate the start of the new school year. We look forward to seeing you all again on Sunday 25 February at The Garden of Saintly Delights. Click here for more information.

The focus is on girls with an interest in STEM subjects, however, this is not a pre-requisite to attend. The event will have representation from Qantas, the Air Force, engineering, air traffic control, aerodrome rescue fire fighting, general aviation, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Women in Aviation/Aerospace and Boeing. Each student will get the opportunity to chat with women from all of these different areas, sit in the cockpit of a Qantas Boeing 737 and see other displays on the day.

When: Saturday 24 February 2018
3pm registration for 3.30pm start; concludes at 6.30pm
Where: Qantas Airways Engineering hangar, Adelaide Airport

Only a handful of places are available; RSVP by Wednesday 14 February to Karen Alderson.

Each school must also have one adult supervisor/parent accompanying the group.

Important!
The event will be held in the Qantas Engineering hangar. This is a safety-critical environment and a fully-operational aircraft maintenance facility. We strongly recommend flat-soled shoes.

BASKETBALL

Monday 12 February
Middle A – Saints 10 defeated by Pembroke 64
A tough start to the season playing a quality team that had a few District players and a lot of height. For us, it was pleasing that we improved as the game wore on, and whilst only scoring 10 points, we created a lot of good opportunities in the second half but let ourselves down with our shooting. All of the girls contributed and there were good signs of improvement to come! – Brenton Davies (coach)

Middle B – Saints 21 defeated Pembroke 15
A great start to the season, especially given we have had limited training due to the heat. We have a very young team and played against Year 9s who had a definite height advantage. The girls used their speed and ball-handling skills in the second half, outscoring Pembroke 12 to 6 to take the game. Special mentions to Willow for her outstanding hustle and Caitlin for her ball-handling and transition. Well done girls! – Brenton Davies (coach)

Middle C – Saints 20 defeated Walford 0
The team started the season with a solid performance to defeat Walford. Good defence enabled St Peter’s to create easy scoring opportunities. Special mention to Asha who showed good leadership and encouragement throughout the game. Keep up the good work girls. – Peter Krantis (coach)

FIGURE SKATING

Charlotte Farley (Year 6) recently passed two tests for the elementary level in figure skating. She has two more tests to pass for the next level, where she can compete at the State Championships for a chance to go to the Australian National Championships in November.

ROWING

Saturday 10 February
We had an excellent regatta on Saturday. All the girls are rowing really well and it is great to see all of their hard work, commitment and persistence paying off. The coaches have spent a lot time this season on technique, and a good technical crew will always beat a strong crew who don’t row very well. That leads me onto training and the importance of girls attending every training where humanly possible, as it not only builds their own skill, fitness and strength but also crew and squad unity. – Ben Flannagan (Director of Rowing)

Overall, another successful weekend down at West Lakes. The senior squad had a great day of racing and training, starting off positively with a win from the stroke 4 of the 8+ that competed in the First 4 race. Following this, the 8+ rowed in the first 8 race and placed a strong 3rd, creeping up on Scotch in second place. Following the regatta, the seniors did some circuit and running training to focus on building fitness in the lead up to Head of the River. A great day for Saints. – Olivia Compare (Captain of Boats)

Last weekend, the seniors rowed both a four and the eight. The four (Rachel Kameniar, Emily Webb, Olivia Law, Sarah Carrodus) raced a straight final. We started slow out the blocks, but rowing with consistency, the girls managed to row through all crews with 1500m to go. Just ticking it along, we stayed out in first and won by an impressive 16 seconds. The 1st VIII (Rachel Kameniar, Emily Webb, Olivia Law, Olivia Compare, Neve McCormack, Charlotte Parker, Zoe Vine Hall, and Sarah Carrodus) performed well on the weekend, placing third in the straight final. We gained two seconds closer to Scotch from the week before and if we continue to row in this way, we are in with a good chance for a podium finish at Head of the River. – Amy Carrodus

Inters A: The crew consisting of Charlotte Sellars, Bella Bernardi, Emma Carrodus and Hannah Keough participated in two races. In the first, a heat, they were up against Seymour and Walford, both rivals throughout the season. The girls raced well and came second, therefore qualifying for the A final. In the final, the girls were up against seven other schools and pressure was high for them. After a sluggish start, the girls came back and ended up finishing fourth, which they should be really proud of. Given it was the first time these girls had really rowed together in these changed positions, they did an amazing job and should continue working hard. – Abbie Lisle

Inter B: The crew rowed extremely well. Imogen Parkinson (stroke), Emily Downie (three seat), Keely Flannagan (two seat) and Michelle Rupert (bow) placed third in the heat and proceeded into the B final where we came first. Despite all the crew changes, the girls all rowed really well together and withstood lots of pressure. – Charlotte Creek

Year 9A: With great weather and a good start, our crew of Keely Flannagan, Ella Waltham, Olivia Kelly, Sophie Barr and Jodi Papendorf placed first in both the heat and the final. The girls were focused and pushed hard, making it great race. – Jodi Papendorf (Cox)

Year 8A crew and the Year 10C crew: The first race of the 8A crew was a heat, where we finished in fifth place. In the second race which was a final, we came first. The first race of the 10C crew was a heat, our bow rower Sophie Stewart had a fractured elbow. Unfortunately it got worse during the race and we were not able to race the final. – Caitie Walker

SOFTBALL

Open A – Saints 16 defeated St John’s Grammar 4
This was a convincing win against a new team in the competition. Unfortunately St John’s were outclassed, and some good competition was displayed at West Beach. With a great victory, the girls are now prepared to play Scotch next week. Good luck for Saturday girls! – Lulu Tierney (Captain)

Year 5/6 Blue – Saints 13 defeated Pembroke 5
St Peter’s Girls had a well-deserved win. Highlight of the game was Jenna Maione and Ruby Adams’ outstanding pitching. Everyone worked extremely well as a team. I look forward to guiding the girls and am excited to see them develop their skills. – Jasmine Ledgard (Coach)

Open C – Saints 15 defeated Seymour 5

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Saturday 10 February
Open A – Saints 4 defeated by Wilderness 10
The Open As were defeated by Wilderness in the trial game. Fitness for most girls was challenged as they had not played since last term, the weather was hot and humid, and the field was soft. Due to the conditions, the girls played nine minute quarters, and in the second, all players worked hard and spoke more which allowed them to build up confidence and score 3 of the 4 trys in the game. Anna Pryor, Holly Cunningham, Ebony-Jade Nash-Smith and Hannah Brown all scored trys by finding gaps in the opposition’s tough defence line. Towards the end of the game, the girls became tired and Wilderness were able to score and come out on top. The group put in a good effort and played well considering the Wilderness team has played together for a number of years. Charlotte Kelly debuted, playing well and she worked hard to keep the opposition from gaining ground on the wing. – Ebony-Jade Nash-Smith (Captain)

Open B – Saints 1 defeated by Wilderness 8
The Open Bs comprised a mixed group of Year 11/12s playing their first season, and some players from last year’s Middle School As. Saints faced a more experienced, skillful and fitter Wilderness team who got off to an early lead, which grew through the game. As expected, our first half was predominantly made up of the girls getting to know each other, and the way each other played. The second half was tighter, with some better team play and adherence to the team structures, and Jemimah Simpson breaking through the Wilderness defence for our only try. Some positive signs which can be built on during the season. – Ben Goldsmith (Coach)

Open C – Saints 1 defeated by Wilderness 3
The large number of girls choosing to play touch has led to the establishment of a third senior touch team. As a warm up for the league beginning this weekend, we travelled to play Wilderness. The weather was humid, but the team worked hard both in attack and defence. Wilderness has acquired a lot of experience in playing touch football but our team, with its strong defence, kept the score against us low. The team refused to go home without a try of their own, resulting in a final score of 1-3. The team demonstrated great sportsmanship with their positive attitudes and their refusal to give up trying to score whilst adamantly denying Wilderness the space to increase their score. – Becca Burton-Howard (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness 9
The girls participated in their first trial match for the season against Wilderness. For the majority of the team, this was their first game and it presented a good opportunity to put their skills to the test. After a slow start, the girls began to gain more confidence with their rucking and passing the ball down the line, with a few attempts to score a try. Wilderness were a strong and experienced team, and as the game progressed, our defense improved and the girls started to understand some of the concepts we had practiced in training. All players put in a good effort and listened to feedback to help improve. During training, we will focus on rucking with intensity, ball passing skills and defensive play. – Tracey Hunt

VOLLEYBALL

Saturday 10 February
Open A – Saints 2 defeated Pembroke 1 (25-10, 25-18, 18-25)
The weather was hot, but Saints were hotter. New 2018 Volleyball Captain Charlotte White won the toss and elected to serve, which produced relentless pressure, forcing Pembroke on the back foot for most of the match. Great scramble in cover and some spectacular rallies made for some very entertaining volleyball. Young guns Anna White and Georgina Keough performed well under the senior pressure, taking it all in their stride. While we took the foot off the pedal in the last set and lost some focus, there were some great signs for the season to come. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open B – Saints 2 defeated Pembroke 1 (25-18, 16-25, 25-15)
Pembroke were loud at the start but were quickly silenced by the Saints’ tall timber. Molly Lucas was designated starting setter with Nicolette Miller and Chloe Deieso punishing at the net. Isabella Villani and Isobel Tan raised the team’s energy with great enthusiasm and cheering. New systems had the girls scrambling in the second set, but they regathered and closed out the third set, with Pembroke left searching for answers. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open C1 – Saints 3 defeated Pembroke 0 (25-11, 25-5, 25-19)
A great team effort by all, with enthusiasm and voice constant throughout the match. The result came down to who could maintain the pressure, and Pembroke had little in reply to Cate Neale’s serves and Kate McKellar-Stewart’s attack at the net. The girls had fun throughout the match and good sportsmanship was shown by all. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open C2 – Saints 3 defeated Pembroke 0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-14)
After a slow start, the girls picked up their energy and showed their true talent. Paris Greene and Clair Kao displayed great serving, enabling the team to get many run-ons. Tilly McCormack and Katelin Calandro displayed some excellent work at the net, whilst Sarah Wishart showed great scrambling around the court. The girls played a great game and I look forward to watching this team develop over the season. – Georgia Howe (Coach)

Open D – Saints 3 defeated Pembroke 1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 26-24)
The girls showed great fight and energy throughout the game, learning from their mistakes and improving every point. Caitlin Fidler and Lola Dimond served brilliantly, and Mary Brownridge played an all-round terrific game. The girls should be proud of their efforts and I look forward to watching them all develop throughout the season. – Georgia Howe (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 3
The Middle B team had a very tight match against Pembroke. Although the girls lost the game, they never gave up and maintained the intensity the whole time. Lucy White served well and finished off numerous points with some amazing spikes. Toni Christiansen also had a great game; she moved well and managed to return difficult serves from Pembroke’s strong servers. – Victoria Neale (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 3
The Middle C team unfortunately lost to Pembroke this week. For a majority of the girls, it was their first game of volleyball which was very exciting. Despite competing against a hard team, the girls played well together and improved every set. Annabelle Bafile and Dayna Petruzzella were standout players for the match, with both serving and moving around the court well. – Victoria Neale (Coach)

WATER POLO

Nicolette Miller (Year 11) has been selected in the 18 and Under State Water Polo team which will complete in the National Championships in Canberra from 28 March – 2 April 2018.

Open A – Saints 8 defeated Wilderness 5
We’re off to a fantastic start to 2018 with all three open teams winning their games. The Open A team played the Wilderness A team and despite missing a couple of players, the girls pushed themselves and their teammates out of their comfort zone. Fiona Lethbridge was player of the game. – Erin Barrera (Captain)

Open B – Saints 16 defeated Wilderness 0
The Open B team played the Wilderness B team and absolutely dominated the pool. Lara Wakeham and Holly Cardone both performed amazingly, and an honourable mention goes to Georgina Wakeham (Year 7) and Emily Baldwinson (Year 8) who played both the B and C game against girls almost four years older than them. – Erin Barrera (Captain)

Open C – Saints 15 defeated Sacred Heart 0
A very young Open C team played Sacred Heart and capped an amazing start for Saints’ Water Polo. With many strong swimmers, the team played incredibly to record their first win of the season and I look forward to watching the girls develop. – Erin Barrera (Captain)

Year 7/8A – Saints 0 defeated by Mercedes 12
Despite the score, there were plenty of positives for this team with some girls playing their first ever game. Both of our goalies made some amazing saves, so congratulations to both Emily Elston and Charlotte Parker. Saints did have many opportunities on goals which weren’t converted and this is something we can work on during training. – Gemma Rowe (Coach)

Year 7/8 B – Saints 8 defeated by St Ignatius 9
What an exciting game. The girls did a fantastic job considering it was their first ever game for some. They never gave up! They worked really well as a team and used many of the skills learnt in training. I really enjoyed watching them back themselves in and giving it a go. – Gemma Rowe (Coach)

From the Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School

Kate MortimerThe first two weeks of school have predictably gone by in the blink of an eye and it has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm with which the girls have returned. Students in the Senior School have settled into their new common rooms, with Year 10 and 11 being provided with their own areas for the first time. It is important, particularly in the senior years, to ensure that the girls have a space they can call their own. Buildings shape people, and part of our role is to provide the girls with a range of additional responsibilities. Often, new areas come with privileges which are accompanied by additional responsibility. I am looking forward to seeing how the girls manage the spaces they have been given.

Wellbeing Logo2

Last week saw the commencement of delivery of content for our new #EMPOWHER wellbeing program. This is an exciting and important time for the School. We live in an environment where young people face a variety of issues that significantly impact on their overall wellbeing. Stress levels have increased, as have mental health conditions. Sleep has reduced and the impact of social media on self-confidence is well-documented. The role of the School is to ensure our girls are provided with solid topical information across a range of areas. This base information must be accompanied with a variety of tools and strategies that the girls can use.

The curriculum that has been developed is reflective of the specific needs of our girls. This data was secured through the comprehensive Wellbeing survey which all girls completed last year. We have also considered national and international research on the health of young women.

Delivery this year is focused on Years 7 – 12 and much work has been done in developing resources for these lessons. All girls will have #EMPOWHER content delivered by their Home Group teacher each Tuesday and Thursday. Lessons are consistent across year groups and staff in each year group have the same lesson plans, tools and strategies. The key to successful wellbeing programs is consistent delivery and we have taken steps to ensure all girls will receive essential content. We will also communicate topics and tools to our parent community as the year progresses.

While delivery has started, the program will be officially launched by Commonwealth, World and Olympic Track Cycling Champion Anna Meares.

Anna is considered by many to be the greatest female track cyclist of all time, and in Rio she became the first Australian athlete to win four individual medals at four consecutive Olympic Games. She suffered serious injuries in a crash in 2008 which left her with a hairline fracture in her C2 vertebrae. Anna has collected 18 gold, 16 silver and 10 bronze medals at Commonwealth, World and Olympic events.

Her story of resilience, determination and courage is inspirational, and we are very excited to hear her tell it. Anna will be at the School talking to Years 6 – 12 on Monday 19 February.

The Tutor Program

The Tutor Program will be commencing in Week 4 in the new Library and I encourage you to discuss with your daughter the benefits of using this service. Tutors are Old Scholars and the girls can book tutors who are skilled in particular subject areas. Bookings can be made through CANVAS each morning and afternoon, apart from Monday morning and Friday afternoon.

Global Academy – Saints Girls Return From New Jersey

W2 New Jersey

In January, five Year 10 Saints Girls had the amazing opportunity to travel to New Jersey, USA for an exchange program with Kent Place School.

We arrived on the coldest day that New York had seen in 5+ years, reaching a low of around -12 degrees celsius. For the two of us who had never seen snow, the temperature change was more than a massive shock. We were able to bond with our host families and started making friends within the Kent Place community, creating lifelong connections. We were immediately exposed to the huge American portion sizes which were at first too much to handle. However, by the end of the trip we could proudly say that we ate like Americans, if not possibly more. – Hattie Maerschel

Four weeks in a foreign country sounds daunting, however after completing the New Jersey exchange program, it is safe to say that it was the best month any one could imagine. Kent Place School was the most welcoming community, and walking into the environment, we could tell that the next month was going to be sensational. All of the Australian girls participated in the school’s normal classes, some joined the swimming team and others contributed to the school’s clubs and committees. I was fortunate enough to go to Philadelphia and Washington DC with my host family and discovered many historical and cultural differences America has to offer. Although the weather was undoubtedly cold, the occasional snow fall made it all worthwhile. This program has been a life-changing experience and a journey that I will never forget. I have met some of my closest friends who I will miss every day and have discovered a new home on the other side of the world. – Bella Bernardi

This has been one of the best experiences and opportunities that I’ve ever had. It was very special as we were the first ever group of girls to be a part of the American exchange! We have created so many new friendships with the Kent Place girls, as well as the teachers! We quickly felt like part of the community and made connections with so many people! We learnt how to play many games during our frees and once spent an hour and a half playing a card game! A special connection was with my host sister Sofia; we bonded over an interesting mix of ukulele and my limited ability of Mario Kart Wii! Whilst in America, I travelled to many places including Washington, New York (twice!) and Philadelphia. One special memory was participating in the Women’s March in Washington – it was extremely empowering being around so many strong, intelligent, powerful women! I’ll never forget it! I’ve learnt so much over the past month and I encourage any current Year 9s to apply for this amazing experience! – Madison McGregor-Simms

I stayed with an amazing host family and made life-long friends. Over the four weeks, we completed many activities in and out of school. I was able to travel up to New York a couple of times to do different things. I saw Wicked on Broadway, did some shopping in Soho, went up the Empire State Building, experienced the lights of Times Square, strolled through Central Park and did much more. I was able to experience New York in a different way because my host family used to live there, so I saw all the secret non-touristy spots. School was also so much fun. One of my favourite memories was playing a very intense card game during my free and let’s just say I have a few battle scars. I have made some great memories and friends that I can never forget. I can’t wait for the girls to come to Australia and experience Saints. – Abbie Lisle

Going on exchange has been a fantastic experience that I’m sure none of us will ever forget. I don’t think I have ever been more excited in my life for the first day of school. Kent Place is such an amazing school with a great sense of community. The girls of Kent Place were so welcoming to us visitors and made us feel at home, even if we were taking a class that we had no idea how to do! I’m sure all of us are extremely sad to have had to say goodbye but we are looking forward to welcoming our girls to Saints. – Hannah Keough

Saints Girls Gear Up For Stellar AFL Season

W2 AFL photo

After the success of the Senior inter-school matches and the Middle School carnival last year, AFL is being offered as a structured sport amongst the 10 independent girls’ schools.

Girls can select AFL in the Winter Sports nominations due out via email in Week 3, however we will only be able to submit one Open (Years 10 – 12) and one Middle (Years 7 – 9) team.

Based on interest, a series of trials will be held at school to select 22 players in each of these two teams. Most of the rules will follow on from the AFLW and St Peter’s Girls is again excited to be working with the Payneham Norwood Union Football Club where our Friday night home games will be played. Full details and the season fixture will be available once all schools nominate.

Payneham Norwood Union is holding a Come N’ Try Footy Day this Sunday 11 February. They are also looking for junior players.

Our Director of Music Goes Global

Sherborne Girls 096.jpg

Over the Christmas break, I was lucky enough to be sent by the School to our sister school in the UK, Sherborne Girls, a Years 7 – 13 all-girls’ boarding school two hours west of London. I went there hoping to be inspired and motivated by fabulous teaching, amazing music and wonderful people. I was not disappointed.

Over the three weeks, I met some extremely passionate and highly-skilled teachers who welcomed me with open arms into their classrooms, boarding houses and ensemble rehearsals. I observed wonderful teaching, taught some classes myself, went on excursions, conducted choirs, gave professional development training to the music staff and I even watched a game of lacrosse on a Saturday afternoon when the temperature was four degrees! Of course, I also completed some mandatory shopping in London and surrounding towns such as Bath and Bristol.

The highlight of my time was meeting John Jenkins, the Director of Music at Sherborne Girls, and his wonderful music staff. John is an amazing musician, conductor and public speaker, and I cherish the one-on-one time I had to talk with him and to reflect on our respective Music Departments. Watching him conduct his outstanding choir the “Madrigals”, a classical version of our Enchante and the combined Sherborne Symphony Orchestra, was a real treat.

Being located very closely to Sherborne Boys, the two schools combined for several musical groups including their Sinfonia and Symphony Orchestra. I have been inspired to try make closer links with our local boys’ schools’ music programs on the back of the observations I made from watching these two schools so successfully connect on a musical level. In fact, I am currently working on a combined Concert Band venture with PAC on 12 April, the last week of school.

I am truly blessed to have been given the chance to venture to the other side of the world to collaborate with and learn from other music educators, and I thank the School for giving me this opportunity.

Year 2s Enjoy Space Mission

W2 SpaceDome

The SpaceDome incursion on Friday 2 February was an absolutely amazing experience. We began by finding out about the planets in our solar system, as we measured out the relative distances across the Arts Centre floor. Then, we crawled through the long dark tunnel into the star-filled dome. We saw the constellations and heard stories from different cultures. This is a terrific provocation to our current inquiry, and leads us beautifully into the exploration of day and night and the seasons as we begin to understand the complex system that we live in.

eChallenge Winners’ Day@Microsoft

W2 Day at Microsoft

Along with their equal-first prize eChallenge victory, winners Isobel Tan, Teegan Lindsay, Aditi Tamhankar and Annabelle Langley also won the Day@Microsoft prize valued at $10,000. Hosted by State Director Dr Eva Balan-Vnuk on 1 February, the girls participated in a variety of activities including a tour of the offices, targeted audience marketing and a motivating cover story vision exercise. Highlights of the day were personally-delivered tech start-up founder stories, and experiencing the latest in virtual reality and HoloLens technology. The girls gained a deep knowledge of the opportunities before them. They were very appreciative of Dr Balan-Vnuk’s personalised efforts in organising and hosting the day.

We have given our bumper stickers a fresh update, and they’re now available in two colour options – a white logo or a blue logo on a transparent background.

Women in Aviation Careers Day

The Women in Aviation Careers Day in conjunction with Qantas Airways Careers day is aimed at getting students from Years 7 – 12 who may (or may not yet) be interested in pursuing a career in the aviation industry.

Everyone attending this event is required to wear closed-in footwear. No thongs, sandals etc. Unfortunately, people wearing non-compliant footwear have been denied entry at previous events. We strongly recommend flat-soled shoes.

Refreshments and afternoon tea will be provided.

Parking
As parking spaces are limited, we recommend car-pooling. I will send through a detailed map with the exact venue location and parking details once we receive your RSVP. The parking will be free.

ROWING

Saturday 5 February
The first Super School Series this past weekend was a great success for all Saints Girls’ crews. It was an opportunity to see where we are sitting within our age categories in the lead up to Head of the River and to familiarise ourselves with the West Lakes course. The Seniors had a great day of racing, placing third in both the heat and the final. The 1st VIII worked well on maintaining speed throughout the race but will continue to work on finesse and composure at a high rating. I was extremely happy with the day, there were great weather conditions and a top effort from Juniors to Seniors. – Olivia Compare (Captain of Boats)

1st VIII: The importance of a Super School Series regatta could not go unnoticed. In performing well, the girls would earn their crew a spot to compete at Head of the River. We placed third in both the heat and final, improving our finish time each race. Battling through the heat showed the determination and endurance of the crew. We were able to row through Seymour College at the 1km mark, which proved the fitness of our girls is of a high standard. After assessing the heat, the final was a chance to show we could improve on what needed to be addressed. We closed the gap significantly between third and second place, and finished off with more length on other crews. – Amy Carrodus (Cox)

Inters A: This week, there was a mix of Inters and Juniors due to girls being absent. The crew consisted of Charlotte Sellars (Stroke), Olivia Kelly (Three Seat), Keely Flannagan (Two Seat) and Emma Carrodus (Bow). We placed fourth in the heat but unfortunately came last in the final when Olivia’s oar snapped. – Charlotte Creek (Cox)

Year 9A: Our first heat gave us the qualifying time to be in the final. The crew of Keely Flannagan, Ella Waltham, Olivia Kelly, Molly Bond and Jodi Papendorf placed third with a time of 4.08. – Jodi Papendorf (Cox)

SURFING

Congratulations to Imogen Elliott who has been selected to attend an Australian Institute of Sport high performance camp at Kingscliff in March. Participants will be able to train and be mentored by the Australian team coaches. ‘Imi’ was awarded this selection with a win at the national Woolworths Grom Comp in November. She has also been selected as a member of the Australian young talent program by Surfing Australia.

TENNIS

Congratulations to Tiana and Yasmin Glazbrook who have again played some great tennis over the summer. Yasmin endured an epic 3 hour 40 minute match which went into the early hours of the morning at the 2017 16/u Australian Championships and Tiana was selected into the All-Australian side following the Pizzey Cup. Both girls achieved much success during the summer holidays!

Enews – Week 1, Term 1 2018

Issue no. 1Enews-bannerW1 Banner

From the Principal

juliashea_web-200x300-200x300Welcome back to the start of the 2018 school year, and what an exciting week it’s been. Stages 4 and 5 of our Master Plan are now complete! We shared another ‘wow’ moment as the girls saw their new Library for the first time on Tuesday morning. It’s a stunning space, and with amazing views across Ferguson Park, it’s a Library with an outlook to rival any in the country. Where else could you be sitting in a window seat or out on the balcony with a koala perched in a tree just metres away? In addition, our lift, emblazoned with a striking blue Saints Girls’ sign and wrap-around staircase, is now fully functional. And our upstairs Stott Wing classrooms have a new balcony, allowing the girls to break out onto both the eastern and western sides of their classrooms.

The new Maker Space, containing the latest 3D printer and laser cutter, is a dynamic room where our girls can gather to explore, tinker, discover and create. The School has undergone a massive transformation in the past 12 months, and I thank the girls and staff for their patience in dealing with the noise and disruption which accompanies any major building project.

The Year 12 Common Room now sits at the western end of the Library. It’s an open and visible space, and deliberately so. When I first arrived at the School, I was disappointed to see that our student leaders were hidden away in a common room with no windows and a solid door. Our Year 12 girls need to be available, approachable and visible. As leaders, they need to engage and interact with our student community and staff. It’s a significant change but I have no doubt that our girls will rise to the challenge.

The new facilities will be officially opened by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia on 21 February at 2.30pm. Parents are welcome to join us on this occasion and further details will be made available closer to the time.

Staff News

We welcome a number of new staff to Saints Girls:

> Nigel Scoggins commences in the role of Director of Teaching and Learning
> Trish Tynan will teach English and work extensively with those girls for whom English is not their first language
> Denise Reid joins the Languages Department and will teach French
> Katherine Kitching will teach both Drama and English
> Rebecca Scott-Toms and Emma Weber join the Mathematics Department
> Thomas Bassett steps into the role of School Chaplain, and will teach Philosophy and Religious Studies
> Angie Storer joins the Junior School staff as an Educational Support Officer

Your daughter’s Home Group teacher remains your first point of contact with the School. They will be in touch with you in the first few weeks of term. Please don’t hesitate to contact them should you have any queries in the meantime. Don’t forget that you can access your daughter’s timetable and contact staff via the links available on myLink.

Absence from School

Schools are required under the Education Act 1972 (SA) and the Education (Compulsory Education Age) Amendment Act 2007 to ensure that students enrolled at the school do attend school and participate in the learning program. Whilst I accept there are things such as family emergencies and opportunities for girls to participate in various competitions, sporting and otherwise, that necessitate absence from School, the booking of family vacations during term time is not something the School can support. Of the 365 days in 2018, 185 are designated school days – just 50.7% of the year! In order to maintain the continuity of your daughter’s education, it’s important that she attend all 185 of those days. Applications for leave from School should be sent to the relevant Head of Sub-School. Applications seeking leave for family holidays during term time will not be approved. Term dates for 2018 and 2019 are available on the website. As has always been the case, illness substantiated by a medical certificate will be the only circumstance under which the rescheduling of an assessment task in the Senior School would be warranted.

Traffic Flow and Pick-up Procedures

Following a successful trial last year, Reception classes will conclude at 3.15pm. The girls, accompanied by their teacher, will walk to the designated pick-up zone. Parents will be able to drive through and collect their daughters. In order for this to work effectively, it’s imperative that all drivers are aware of the following:

> Only those collecting Reception students will have access to the pick-up zone prior to 3.30pm in the afternoon.
> Cars must not be parked in the drop-off/pick-up zone.
> Drivers must not exit their car when in the drop-off/pick-up zone. If your daughter is not in the designated area when you arrive to collect her, you must find legal parking before exiting your car and coming to look for her.
> Senior staff will be on duty. If you are asked to move on, please do so. It may be necessary to circle the block and rejoin the pick-up line.
> Girls must always enter or exit from the passenger side of the vehicle.
> Our girls’ safety is paramount and hence the driver’s full attention is required. Please refrain from talking on your mobile phone whilst using the drop-off/pick-up zone.
> Out of consideration for others in line, girls should ‘load up’ quickly, allowing the traffic to move smoothly through the zone.

Your adherence to the above guidelines is much appreciated.

Have a fantastic first term and I look forward to seeing you next Friday night at the P&F Welcome Drinks on the Lawns commencing at 6.30pm.

Maker Space Gets a Workout!

W1 Maker Space

This week saw students begin to use our new R – 12 Maker Space. Located between the new Library and the Science facilities, it provides ready access for students to the resources and expertise across all areas. The purpose of this specialist space is to enable our students to make even stronger connections between their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) understanding and skills. The Maker Space houses our new 3D printer and laser cutter, along with our wide range of robotics equipment. There is space for students to ‘make’ and ‘break’ objects to better understand how technology works and how it can be used to design and create solutions to problems. The Year 10 GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Mathematics and Science) class spent their first lesson this year in the Maker Space, working in teams to design and build model apartment complexes that met the combined criteria of maximum height and strength at minimum cost. We look forward to all girls making use of the Maker Space as the year progresses.

Global Academy – Saints Girls Visit the UK

W1 Exchange

The Global Academy at St Peter’s Girls’ School provides opportunities for our girls to participate in an exchange with an overseas school. We recently had two Year 10 students, Matilda Braithwaite and Renee Lawrence, return from an exchange to England. We asked the girls to provide a recap of their experience:

On 4 January, Renee and I left for Sherborne Girls in England to take part in a three week exchange program. We stayed in the boarding houses Wingfield and East with our exchanges Ali and Mia, where we went for meals, homework and bed. We experienced everyday school life, going to six lessons a day, abbey on Sundays, socials with the boys’ school and even Saturday school. Spending all this time with the girls in my year gave me a chance to really get to know them and have lots of fun together! During our stay, the Sherborne girls had an exeat weekend where they go home and spend time with their families. I was fortunate enough to travel to London for a few days with Mia. We ticked everything off my London checklist: Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, M&M World, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, the Crown Jewels, the London Eye, Big Ben, Wicked the Musical, and I saw snow for the first time! We then spent a day on Mia’s farm in Dorset and a day in Exeter for some retail therapy. This exchange is one I would definitely recommend for future Year 10s because it is a once in a lifetime trip. I really enjoyed every moment and wish I could have stayed longer, although I do not miss the rainy, freezing weather! I have made some very close friends and I hope I can keep in touch with them  – maybe they can come over and experience Australia one day. – Matilda Braithwaite

Being a part of Sherborne Girls allowed us to have many outings around England, and locally. Every Saturday night, we would walk to the boys’ school and have a social. The first week, we had in-house socials. This is when we would meet up with another boys’ house and do activities together. I participated in a quiz and different sports like table tennis, netball and soccer. Our other social was a disco. The whole grade walked to the boys’ school and danced and socialised to some fellow students DJing. It allowed for everyone to get to know each other in a comfortable environment. We also went on some outings with the other exchanges to see famous monuments. We first went to Stonehenge with four Tasmanian exchanges and two South African exchanges. It was a really fun time spent learning about the history while getting to know some of the other girls. We also went to Bath which was a really fun day as we visited the Fashion museum where we looked at clothes from different eras and dressed up! Then, we went to the Roman baths, which was such a fantastic experience learning about the purpose and history behind them. While in Sherborne, we had an exeat. This was an opportunity to go home with our exchange family and see some amazing sights. I had the incredible opportunity to travel to London twice. We enjoyed some wonderful sights such as Tower of London, London Bridge, the Crown Jewels, Buckingham Palace, Harrods and many places on the Monopoly board. The second day we shopped and used the famous London Underground, which was a crazy but fantastic experience. I would 100% recommend this exchange to any girl going into Year 10 next year. I have made some really great friends on the other side of the world and can’t wait for my exchange partner to come to Adelaide! – Renee Lawrence

New to the School Shop!

W1 Bumper Stickers

Bumper Stickers

We have given our bumper stickers a fresh update, and these are now available in two colour options – a white logo or a blue logo on a transparent background.

Handy hint: after a lot of rigorous testing, it was decided that the stickers look their best if you trim around the logo (leaving a 3mm or so border). Saints Girls’ families are welcome to collect a sticker from the School Shop during your next visit.

Portable Mobile Phone Chargers

W1 ChargerYou won’t need to worry about running out of phone battery if you have one of these chargers ready to go! For only $19.95 each, these are 2000 mAh portable chargers that come with a 3 in 1 cable with micro USB, and are for a mobile phone or small device that can recharge from a USB port. Musical Stars in the Making

W1 Musical

During the holidays, 13 of our Music students continued to extend their singing and stage craft skills through involvement in the Pelican Productions Music Theatre Camp, which culminated in the show, Seize the Day. Students had the opportunity to work with outstanding vocalists including cabaret performer Libby O’Donovan, Rosie Hosking, Ross Burford, Tania Savelli and several renowned choreographers.

The performances were an outstanding success, a mix of joyous sound and energy abounding. While all of our girls were involved in chorus work, many successfully made it through the rigorous audition process and managed to secure both leading and support roles. These students included Zara Blight, Hannah Brown, Daisy Kennett, Annabelle Langley, Charlotte Norman, Isabelle Norman, Emma Pool, Zoe Pool and Victoria Thorp. Outstanding vocal performances ranged from Zoe Pool as Charlie in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Victoria Thorp as Moana from the children’s film Moana, Hannah Brown as Anastasia from the film of the same name, to gospel singing enthusiast Isabelle Norman as Deloris from Sister Act. Special congratulations to Emma Pool who won the Spirit Award for positive attitude, enthusiastic participation and mentoring of younger students.

Congratulations Cartia

W1 - CL 3Congratulations to Cartia Lanzoni in Year 7 who has secured the main role of Matilda in the 2018 Fringe show The Revolting Children of Tomorrow.
