W6 - Guest Speaker 2

From Our Deputy Principal / Head of Senior School

Spotlight on Leadership

Kate MortimerThere are a variety of ways in which people view leadership. This is certainly not surprising, considering the breadth of leadership skills and behaviours. One common view is that leadership is the result of gaining a title; for example, Prefect, Middle School Leader or team Captain. There is, of course, justification for this view. Titles provide a heightened profile, the allocation of tasks that require completion and additional levels of responsibility. Furthermore, it can be argued that titles are a necessity. They provide a clear structure within a school and allow for the identification of those who must work positively to serve the interests of others.

However, the truth of the matter is that leadership is not limited to those who hold a title. Nor does holding a title necessarily result in a consistent display of leadership behaviours. This point was reinforced to the girls last week by our guest speaker Chelsea Randall. She made the point that while she may hold a title now, specifically the Co-Captain of the Adelaide Crows AFLW team, her leadership journey started decades earlier. Chelsea’s message was clear: title or not, we can all have leadership moments. This is certainly reflective of the everyday leadership that has been demonstrated by our Year 11 girls in the organisation of their House Dinners. Not a title in sight, but rather multiple girls stepping up to ensure the evenings run smoothly and are enjoyed by all.

#EMPOWHER Evaluation

As many of you are aware, since the start of 2018, the School has been delivering two wellbeing lessons each week to girls in Years 7 – 12. Lesson content was designed around survey results that were collected from the girls in 2017. Various areas were identified for improvement including connections to school, sleep, time management, stress management, confidence, friendships, bullying, body image, social media and learning engagement. Later this term, we will again be surveying the girls to compare current data with that collected in 2017. Results will be communicated to parents in Term 4 and will also be used to adjust content to ensure our lessons are relevant to the needs of the girls.

Exciting Chapter for Book Week

W6 - Book Week

It’s been another exciting chapter at Saints Girls as the School embraced Book Week.

This year’s theme of ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’ ignited imagination amongst students and staff alike.

The week culminated in the annual Dress Up Day Parade this morning, where the Junior School girls and their teachers showcased colourful costumes to celebrate the wonders of literacy.

A longer video will be shared via a link on Canvas next week.

Wild Night at Selwyn House Dinner

W6 - House Dinner

Howdy partners! Last Friday night, the Arts Centre was transformed into the ‘Selwyn Saloon’ from the Wild Wild West. We were visited by Jesse and Woody from Toy Story, a couple of cows, sheriffs, spiky cacti, walking wanted posters, cowboys, cowgirls, and we even had a tumbleweed roll in! For dinner, we enjoyed a fantastic meal with finger food for entree, a sizzling BBQ for main and some delicious brownies with ice-cream for dessert. A big thank you to the Year 11 parents for cooking up a storm!

The girls all competed in ‘Guess the Song’ and ‘Guess the Baby Face’, but the biggest contest by far was the task of turning a hockey stick into a horse, with the teachers creating the most handsome horse the Selwyn Saloon had ever seen. The girls and teachers rode their horses through the Wild Wild West obstacle course, and the Year 8s came out victorious.

We finished off the shindig with all the Selwyn girls up and dancing to the ‘Hoedown Throwdown’ led by Charlotte Cohen and Louisa Reid. Paris Robson had standout dancing skills and was chosen as best dancer. The Year 12s looked great on the night and we hope they all enjoyed their last House Dinner with their Selwyn sisters.

Thanks to all the teachers and parents who helped out and all the Selwyn girls for making the night a roaring success!

Amazing Authors Share World of Words

W6 - Author 2

As part of Children’s Book Week in the Junior School, we have been fortunate to enjoy visits from two South Australian authors.

Charlotte Barkla came to speak to the Year 3 and 4 students. The girls explored the process of writing a book, talking about character, plot and structure, while using real-life examples from Charlotte’s recently-published books. They were able to develop their own character under her guidance and hear excerpts from her Edie’s Experiments series. These books are now ready to be borrowed in the Junior Library.

Katrina Germein visited the Reception to Year 2 students. She has published many picture books and, as an early childhood educator, her sessions were highly interactive. The students created their own stories and performed a noisy rendition of her new book Shoo You Crocodile! Katrina shared her writing process of how ideas in her head become notes jotted down and drawings in a book that she ponders over. Then, once the story is perfected, an illustrator brings the words to life, but the process of publishing a book can take a very long time.

Both authors spoke of their love of reading and writing and how important books were to them as children.

Rainbow Rain for Reception Scientists

W6 - Reception science 2

Last week, the students in Reception MKA and Reception ALE were visited by two very special scientists as part of National Science Week. Over two days, the girls participated in a number of different experiments which resulted in high levels of curiosity and excitement.

The students’ favourite experiment was making ‘Rainbow Rain’. This particular experiment taught the girls how rain is formed by investigating what happens when water droplets collect in a cloud. The girls watched excitedly as they added food colouring to their shaving cream clouds and patiently waited for the first drops of coloured rain to appear.

Each Reception thoroughly enjoyed participating in National Science Week and are looking forward to all the wonderful science experiences they will encounter in their future years at Saints Girls.

Clothes Shwop’s Material Impact

W6 - Clothes Shwop

Last week, the Environment Club held our biennial Clothes Shwop. Over the past term, members have been working hard to encourage girls in the Middle and Senior Schools to bring in unwanted clothes and donate them, aiming to prevent the amount of fashion waste produced by our School community. Over the course of the term, around 150 items of clothing were donated.

On the day of the Clothes Shwop, the Environment Club set up all the clothes in the Drama room, as girls lined up outside waiting to be able to come in and browse. More than 50 girls attended, and the vast majority of items were taken! We hope that this has discouraged girls from buying fast fashion, and instead encouraged them to try buy pre-loved clothes where possible, and donate all of their old clothes!

The clothes that were not taken will be donated to the Magdalene Centre, an Anglican charity. We hope that everyone’s kind donations can help not just the environment and the School community, but the wider community as well!

At the Heart of Art

W6 - Art 2

This hyper-realistic abstract piece (pictured on the left) was directly inspired by Stephanie Kilgast and her renowned sculptures as she works with concepts of nature and biodiversity.

We began by studying the colour scheme and techniques she had used to create hyper-realistic clay pieces that accompanied her sculptures, and sketching our designs individually, choosing one out of four. We spent most of the time individually crafting the nature-inspired clay pieces that were later baked then glued onto our chosen object.

My decision to use a 3D printed anatomy heart for my final design was directly reflected from Kilgast’s concepts. Her sculptures focus on celebrating the beauty of nature in question of humanity, as well as presenting a cheerful approach towards the current decay of nature’s gifts, hoping to explain that nature has a capacity to regrow. In my sculpture, I wanted to combine a sense of biodiversity with anatomy, hoping to create a reminder of the tightly-knit connection between nature and individual beings.

Fundraising Vision for RSB – Next Wednesday

W5 - IB CAS Fundraiser

Next Wednesday, the Year 12 IB CAS class will be holding a stall to raise money for RSB (Royal Society for the Blind). RSB is a not-for-profit organisation established over 130 years ago that assists people in managing their vision impairment and participating independently in the community.

The current global climate has impacted RSB’s ability to raise funds for vital services, such as the $50,000 it costs to train each Guide Dog. To help out, we will be selling merchandise including key rings, pens, stuffed dogs and more, with prices ranging from $2 to $20. All year levels will be able to purchase merchandise on the day using cash, with a separate table for Mid-Year Receptions to Year 3 students. Student cards will not be accepted. The stall will be set up at lunchtime on the Arts Centre steps where there will also be some trainee dogs coming to visit.

We hope that you support this worthy cause!

KALEIDOSCOPE – SACE Dance Performance

W4 - Kaleidoscope

The 2020 Stage 2 Dancers have been working tirelessly all year to present to you KALEIDOSCOPE. This year, audiences are in for a colourful treat as we show off not only the immense talent of our dancers but also the new state-of-the-art lighting equipment in our Arts Centre. I’ve always been very interested in the impact lighting has on dance and how the fusion of the two, when timed perfectly, helps communicate a mood, story or experience. For me, it is certainly an integral part of the creative process. Thankfully, Wesley, our Arts Centre Manager, is a genius at making the wild ideas in my head a visual reality on the stage!

This show includes a variety of dance styles, each linked in some way to a specific hue, exploring the feelings and emotions it evokes. The commitment and support of the remarkable Stage 1 Dancers has helped bring KALEIDOSCOPE to fruition and I’m excited to give our Year 10 Dancers a formal performance experience, which I hope helps to deepen their enjoyment of dancing.

So fortunate to be performed in our Arts Centre to a live audience, let KALEIDOSCOPE be your outing to the theatre. See you there!

When: 2 and 3 September, 7pm
Where: Arts Centre

Sports Day 2020 – Important Information

W5 - Sports Day

General Information

On Friday 4 September, St Peter’s Girls will stage the annual Years 4 – 12 Sports Day at the SA Athletics Stadium at Mile End. The day will begin at 8.30am and will conclude by approximately 3.15pm. This event is to be treated like a normal school day, therefore attendance is compulsory. If a student is unable to participate in their events, a note must be provided to PE staff. Girls in Years 4 – 11 are reminded to wear their complete PE uniform with a House top and hat. We encourage the girls to display their House spirit, but please be aware body paint is not permitted in the stadium. Girls are able to wear spikes up to 7mm in length. Students will be fully briefed before the event about special arrangements for the day.

The Saints Sport Support Group will be running a raffle with excellent prizes on offer. They will also be selling House wristbands for $2, water bottles for $10 and caps for $25, which can be purchased at the gate.

Travel Arrangements

Students who travel on school buses will automatically be taken to the stadium in the morning and will depart on buses from there in the afternoon. In addition, we are offering a bus service for up to 100 registered students which will depart school at 7.30am and return by approximately 4.15pm. To book your daughter’s seat, visit https://www.trybooking.com/BKVVB; bookings close at 5pm on Tuesday 1 September, or once the maximum limit is reached. All other students will need to be dropped off and picked up from the stadium, as the girls will be dismissed directly from the venue.

COVID-Safe Measures

Due to the stadium’s COVID-Safe Plan, we must limit the number of spectators. In the interest of fairness, we will be limiting spectator tickets to one per student in the first instance. Tickets are available via https://www.trybooking.com/BLCCY and must be brought to the stadium where spectators will be asked to sign in. ‘Walk-ins’ will not be permitted. Bookings close at 5pm on Tuesday 1 September, or once the maximum limit is reached.

Under-cover seating is far more limited as a result of social distancing requirements, so the majority of parent viewing will be from the tiered sections surrounding the track. As such, please bring protection from the elements.

All ticket holders will be emailed with final details of COVID-Safe measures before the event. Should changes to these arrangements be necessary due to amended requirements, we will update you as soon as possible.

Share the Dignity Campaign

W3 - Share the Dignity

We are supporting Share the Dignity again this August to help the many women who cannot afford sanitary items. We are a collection point for this amazing charity. We encourage students to bring along packets of pads and/or tampons and place them in the pink boxes located in the Library, Middle School area, or give them to Mrs Risbey in the PE office. Let’s get behind this charity and fill the boxes over and over.

Thank you in advance on behalf of the many women and young girls who will benefit from your kindness.

Ensuring everyone is afforded the dignity so many of us take for granted.
Our work directly benefits women in crisis.
Every. Single. Day.

Car Park Courtesy

The School has again received complaints about traffic blocking Stonyfell Road for lengthy periods during drop-off and pick-up. If the car park is full and you are unable to enter, circle the block until it is clear to enter, find a park elsewhere or, where age-appropriate, meet your daughter in a surrounding street. Unless special circumstances apply, parents of girls in Years 2 to 12 should not enter the car park to collect their daughters prior to 3.30pm. Parents of girls in Reception and Year 1 have exclusive use of the pick-up zone prior to this time for safety and traffic reasons.

Please also refrain from turning right into or out of the car park, and please do not queue in the car park’s lanes as this often prevents drivers who are legally parked from exiting.

As a School, we must set an example for our students in showing courtesy to all; in this case, other road users.

Thank you for your cooperation.

AUSSIE RULES

Open – Saints had a bye

Middle – Saints 0.1 – 1 defeated by Walford Open B 2.5 – 17
The girls had a difficult match against the senior Walford team. It was a scrappy affair with some strong tackling throughout, preventing the ball from clearing the congested area. We looked likely when the ball came out to space, but could not finish or hold the ball in our forward line long enough to place the opposition under enough pressure. A great tackle by Grace Richards late in the game typified the girls’ efforts, though more work needs to be done on bringing the ball to space. – Dan Searle (Coordinator)

BADMINTON

Well done to all the girls for putting in a tremendous effort and recording some more great results. Our Bs, Cs, D1s, E1s and E2s all won their games. The A grade girls had a bye which I hope they enjoyed. Keep up the good work girls!  Amelie Dunda (Captain)

Open A: Bye

Open B: 5 – 1 defeated Immanuel
Best Players: Candy Feng, Charlotte Stewart and Angela Feng

Open C: 5 – 1 defeated Immanuel
Best Players: Natacha Zisogiannopoulos and Holly Wallman-Craddock

Open D1: 4 – 2 defeated Wilderness
Best Player: Helen Zhang, Tara Nedumaran

Open D2: 3 – 3 defeated by Wilderness
Best Player: Mabel Cook

Open E1: 8 – 1 defeated Wilderness
Best Players: Sowmya Biradar, Lilly Michelon, Francine Stavrou, Hattie Xu and Rebecca Holloway.

Open E2: 6 – 3 defeated Wilderness
Best Players: Jennifer Hu, Abigail Papps, Grace Ran, Anna Wan, Rita Ling

Open E3: 7 – 2 defeated by Pembroke
Best Players: Ella Hung, Alyssa Bo and Claudia Henschke

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 13 defeated by Seymour White 39
The girls fought hard and it’s good to see them getting tougher in defence and rebounding competitions. Keep working on having more confidence to take shots girls. – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 4 defeated by Pembroke 36
The girls had another tough game but played well together. They have shown significant improvement since the first game and work hard to get in front of their players. Their defence was very good in the second half, stopping Pembroke from scoring in the third quarter and only allowing 3 goals in the fourth. – Sarah Matheson (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 46 defeated Pembroke Green 8
Another dominating performance where our skills and defensive pressure were too strong for Pembroke to match. It was a team effort with great ball movement which resulted in multiple players scoring points.  Katherine Perkas (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open – Saints 8 defeated Pembroke 0
Saints started strongly with an attacking penalty corner in the first minute and numerous shots on target in the remainder of the quarter. Our strikers played very well and constant pressure was placed on the opposition defenders. It was great to have so many different goal scorers! Congratulations to Bridgette, Poppie and Amelia for scoring, and special mention to Chloe who scored her first goal in the senior team and followed it up with a second shortly after. A great game from the girls and awesome to see all the skills we practise at training being implemented into our game play. – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 10 defeated St Aloysius 1
The girls played another great game against Eagles, winning by 9 goals. They dominated the first half, creating a 7-goal lead. With the constant procession the girls gained from the centre, the mercy rule was introduced to level out the scores. This did not stop the girls from hustling hard all over the field for ground balls. The midfield and attack were very strong, while the defence stuck to their players and barely let the ball get into the defensive third. Lara Maione did a great job in defence, making many intercepts and getting the loose ground balls. Congratulations to Grace Jones for her saves in goal, only letting one through! Our goal scorers were Savannah Walls (3), Emily Bates (2), Alannah Godfrey, Jaime Gower, Cleo Hart, Claris Stolcman and Zoe Pool (1). – Millie Wilkin (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 11 – Saints Blue 8 defeated St Aloysius 3
This game was a wonderful example of the results the team can achieve from working hard. Saints Blue played a determined and tactical match, utilising their speed against their taller opponents. All team members demonstrated confidence with intercepting passes, transitioning from defence to attack and shooting hard. Special mention to Sophia Curry and Matilda Birmingham who played tough in the goals and stopped many shots! Notable mention to Matilda Purvis whose determination with goal shooting was admirable! Every player was supportive of each other, eagerly awaiting their time on the field. I was very impressed with the team’s cohesiveness and ability to think fast with effective passing. We will practise collecting ground balls on the run and moving our positioning in attack when approaching the goal. All Saints Blue members should be so pleased with their hard work, and I will look forward to continuing to work with this wonderful, enthusiastic team. – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints White 10 drew with North Adelaide 10
The girls played a great game, trying hard to have their sticks up high to make intercepts in defence, which worked for Lois Burton-Howard (Year 4). In attack, the girls focused on spreading out and running fast to get free. This was done well by Ruby Kelly (Year 4). It was great to see the girls pick up many ground balls successfully, especially by Mathilda Begg (Year 3) and Grace Marshall (Year 3). Transitioning the ball down to attack by running hard was demonstrated by Willow Chong (Year 3), Neela (Year 4) and Scarlett Schinella (Year 3). At half-time, the girls were down by 1 goal but were determined to win. Lola Silvani moved around the goal to try get a better angle when shooting. Our fantastic goalies for the match were Lily Silvani and Anvika Singh (Year 4). Our goal scorers were Lois (3), Ruby (1), Neela (2), Grace (1) and Lily (2). The girls did very well against a tough opposition.  Lucy Martin (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 37 defeated by Pembroke 48
An unfortunate loss for the girls; however, the end result is not a true reflection of the game. The score was within 2-4 goals throughout the first three quarters, which created a competitive atmosphere amongst the crowd in the Gym. Saints won the first half by 2 goals due to their commitment to the ball and ability to defeat Pembroke’s defenders. Best players were Sarah Wishart and Ruby Deakin for driving the ball down in attack and communicating with their teammates, in and out of the ring. Special mentions also go to Olivia Kelly and Sadie Vikor-Lam for their encouragement of the team and high intensity. – Hannah Freeman (Captain)

Open B – Saints 26 defeated by Pembroke 30
The Open Bs kept up with Pembroke in the first quarter but began to slip behind in the second due to pressure across the whole court. There were moments of good play down the court with Milly constantly being an option in attack and feeding the ball well into our shooters. Anda and Lucy had a great game with consistency across all four quarters and many interceptions. A close game but a few errors made it difficult to get there in the end. – Gemma Schaedel

Open E1 – Saints 42 defeated Westminster 21
Another win for the girls! A very strong first quarter meant they kept Westminster down to only 2 goals and created a comfortable lead to enjoy the rest of the game and play out of their regular positions. Best players were Imogen Parkinson and Chelsea Walls. Good job girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Open E2 – Saints 19 defeated by Westminster 30
A top game by the girls with major improvements from previous weeks. They worked hard to fight against Westminster’s strong defensive line. This was most successful in the last quarter, which they won by 5 goals! A big thank you to Jessica Wishart and Clair Kao for playing both games and helping the girls out in the goal ring. Well done girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Year 10A – Saints 19 defeated by Pembroke 42

Year 10C – Saints 9 defeated by Scotch 51
Despite what the score line shows, the girls played a fantastic game. It was great to see everyone working well as a team in attack to get the ball down to the shooting circle, but also in defence, creating many turnovers. Great game girls! – Elena Vaananen (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 26 defeated by Pembroke 36
The girls were competitive but the score blew out in the last quarter. We managed lots of defensive ball but had trouble converting, so we will work on our second phase from the centre pass and goalie movement in the circle. – Della Griffith (Coach)

Year 9B – Saints 22 defeated by Pembroke 24
The girls had a slow first half, however, I was really impressed with their effort in the second, winning both the third and fourth quarters to only go down by 2. Samantha had an awesome game in defence, and Georgie and Grace worked really well together in the circle which was great to see. – Natasha Dinan (Coach)

Year 9C – Saints 28 defeated Pembroke 14
All players encouraged each other and worked well as a team. Best players were Phoebe Black and Issy Lowry. Well done to all the girls. – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 29 defeated Pembroke 28
This was a really good game and we came off with a 1-point win. Special mentions to Charlie Piper, Sophie Ricciuto and Claudia Pearce for working well on the court and calling out for the ball. We could try to be more accurate in our passing, but we worked super well as a team; good job girls! – Airlie McCabe

Year 8B – Saints 28 defeated Pembroke 6
The girls faced Pembroke in a rough game of netball. They played their hardest in all quarters, scoring goal after goal to take the win. They intercepted the ball and defended well, but their voices weren’t used as much as they should have been. Well done to Ruby Adams and Ayla Blaskett for being the players of the match. Both girls stood out and helped the team play a great game. Good job girls! – Poppy Oswald

Year 8C – Saints 12 defeated by Concordia 13
It was a very close competition against Concordia, with the score tied at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. Saints broke away in the second and third quarters, outplaying Concordia by moving the ball down the court more easily and making less mistakes. However, in the final quarter, Concordia fought their way back and took the win by 1 goal. Congratulations to Hope, our best player this match, who played a great game in defence by making many intercepts and demonstrating a consistent high level of effort throughout. A big thanks to Naadiya and Isabelle Loh for playing up with us this game. – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 8D – Saints 8 defeated by Pulteney 27
The team played what was probably their best game so far. Although we had another loss, the improvement in passing, leading and passages of play down the court was encouraging. The team showed more positive transitions from defence to attack and an increased ability to convert this into goals. In comparison to our opponents, we have a way to go performance-wise, however, it was a much better display from the team, and again, their positive attitude despite being down was a credit to them. – Gina Barker (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 32 defeated Pembroke 15

Year 7B – Saints 18 defeated Pembroke 4
The girls played an awesome game against Pembroke. Each quarter, they improved their shooting, defending and passing. In the first, we started with some really strong and accurate passes. In the second, our defenders were pumped up, intercepting the ball and passing it down to our attackers to shoot. In the third quarter, our attacking was on-point and all of the players were taking long shots into the goal and making them in. In the last quarter, everyone was excited because we knew we were going to win but that didn’t stop us from playing our hardest. Good game girls. – Lucy Mitchell

Year 4 Blue – Saints 3 defeated by Wilderness White 6
Saints girls tried really hard, playing a solid team game. Our defenders Abbie Tulloch and Victoria Zou were great in defence, but unfortunately, Wilderness played a strong last quarter, scoring 5 of their 6 goals. Well done Saints Girls on never giving up.  Karen Braund (Proud Coach)

Year 4 White – Saints 4 defeated by Pembroke 10
The girls tried extremely hard, but unfortunately, Pembroke was too strong. Defence worked well in creating a lot of pressure and turnovers, however, we weren’t able to capitalise on this. There were definitely some great passages of play which allowed us to score. We maintained a positive attitude and will take this into training where we will work on our leading, passing and communication  Sivani Sivasuthan (Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 12 defeated Walford 1
In contrast to being rained out the previous game, our girls enjoyed a win in the sunshine! The entire team really responded to training, where we talked about making space on the court. The ease at which our girls were able to get the ball into the goal ring is a testament to this. Special mention to Bonnie Qu this week, whose defensive work was unstoppable, with countless intercepts and pressure in both positions she played. Can’t wait for the next game! – Rebecca Scott-Toms (Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 3
The Open As played well against a particularly strong side, but unfortunately, it resulted in a loss. Having faced Pembroke earlier in the season, it was great to see the immense progress the girls have made, despite the score. Lucy Benn and Lysiane Franchi did extremely well in the midfield, relentlessly applying some great tackles and winning the ball as a result. We worked well as a team to move the ball out of our defence, to the midfield, which delivered through-balls for our attackers to run onto. Kendra Ware played a great game in goals, saving many strong shots on goal and punting the ball well. I would like to thank Georgia Evans and Mary Stavrou, who joined the As this game with both performing exceptionally well. – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 drew with Immanuel 0
The girls were fired up and raring to go with a positive spirit in the air. The theme of the game from start to finish was absolute domination. We won every challenge, were first to the ball, kept our structure, and showed aggression and hunger for the ball. They linked many passes together, working it up to the attackers, and created chance after chance to score and win the game. Unfortunately, we went the whole game scoreless even though we had shots on goal left, right and centre. Everything about our game was strong, from our defenders who let nothing through, our midfield who ran non-stop, and our strikers who created all the chances in the world. I cannot fault anyone on the field as we were strong and solid. It was a nail-biter in terms of getting just one goal, which was all we needed, but we just didn’t put the icing on the cake. This game showed what the girls are capable of and have been capable of all season, so keep it up as you made me very proud. The support the girls showed and attitude throughout was evident as they played with high spirits and backed each other. Let’s hit the scoreboard next match, get our first win of the season and finish these last two games strongly. – TJ Scarsgill (Coach)

Middle A/B – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness 4
The Middle A and B teams combined for a tough game against Wilderness. Although the girls hadn’t played as a group before, we never stopped trying and there was plenty of encouragement from the bench. Lydia Burrough, Lucy Mitchell and Asha Eaton put in a great defensive effort, tackling hard and blocking shots. Jessica Zhang, Tamsin Freeman and Levanya De Silva also worked hard in midfield. Unfortunately, the difference was Wilderness taking their chances, while our shots were off-target. Well done to Jackie Balasis and Annabel Keough for volunteering to play in goal; both stepped up and made some great saves! We will work to improve our attacking play at training. – Ange Gouvielos (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 5 defeated Walford 0
The girls played an excellent match, resulting in a deserving win against Walford. They had possession of the ball for the majority of the game, with our strong line of defence stopping the opposition from taking many attempts to score goals. Eliza Brill Reed, Alison Francis and Grace Brockhouse played well in attack, with Grace constantly running around the field to keep the ball in our possession. In defence, Meghana Chettimada made some strong passes to her teammates, hindering the opposition. Lucy Shigeno also unleashed some brilliant kicks across the field. Even with the wet weather and light hail, the girls continued to give their all and their performance was one of the best this season. Goals were scored by Alyssa Piantedosi (3), Alison Francis and Lucy Lowry (1). Well done girls! – Ellie Anderson and Mary Stavrou (Coaches)

Year 5 – Saints 7 defeated Seymour 0
An energetic and rewarding game from the team. Efforts across the pitch paid off, leading the girls to maintain control in an amazing first win! The midfielders increased their work-rate, playing a crucial role in connecting a strong defence with a persistent forward line. Thanks to goalkeepers Aleesha Gray and Romana Walsh, who kept a clean sheet. Well done as well to goal scorers Grace Mayen, Izzy Huf and Aleesha Gray. – Beth Cross (Coach)

Year 3 – St Peter’s Girls’ 6 defeated Pulteney 4
Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. Rain, rain, go away, we’re here again with our skills on display! Focused and ready for a contest, the girls eagerly awaited the start of what we had anticipated as a challenging match. We were correct; Pulteney were good, and really made us think. The buzz was exciting, and the game started at a frantic pace but we were ready. Lauren Disney kicked 6 goals for the match. Lois Burton-Howard and Ruby Pahuja both enjoyed being kept on their toes as our goalkeepers. – Mark Routley (Coach)

eNews – Week 5, Term 3 2020

Issue no. 25Enews-banner

W5 - Banner 2

From Our Head of Junior School

One of the wonderful things about being a teacher is having a thirst for learning. We have a desire for knowledge and a keen aspiration to constantly improve our own practice. We strive to find new ways to help students learn concepts with deep, lasting understanding, and challenge the surface-level ‘know it today, forgotten by tomorrow’ results of weaker approaches.

Suzanne HaddyAs such, Junior School teachers are continuing to commit their time to ongoing professional learning in Literacy and Numeracy, attending internal, external and online opportunities. Some of our most recent work in Mathematics has been around improving students’ flexibility and fluency in manipulating numbers. There is a long-held and harmful myth that suggests to be successful in Mathematics, you must be a ‘fast’ thinker. However, it is not speed that creates a good mathematician, it is flexibility. Letting go of the notion that speed is the most important thing, and valuing deep and flexible thinking instead, liberates us to approach Mathematics entirely differently and leads to long-lasting conceptual understanding.

High achieving Mathematics students engage with numbers flexibly and use multiple strategies when approaching a mathematical situation. While being good at memorising facts is useful, we know that good memorisers often find they can be successful by following teachers’ methods, but this is often at the expense of developing true understanding.

Strong mathematical thinkers have learned to visualise numbers in alternative groupings and regroupings, and can talk about what they see. Jo Boaler, British education author and Nomellini-Olivier Professor of Mathematics Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education, explains this point by asking you to work out 18 x 5 in your head and she then shares a variety of approaches frequently used. There are many approaches to this problem and different people will break the components apart in different ways, making them into ‘friendlier’ numbers to work with, such as seeing 18 x 5 as 9 x 10 or perhaps (18 x 10) ÷ 2. Others may struggle with a less flexible approach of 18 + 18 + 18 + 18 + 18. When students believe that there is only one way to solve a mathematics problem, or that they must rely on memorisation or speed-recall alone, they can very quickly come to believe that they are ‘no good at maths’. When they learn that flexibility is the key, the door to Mathematics opens. It is our job to teach our students ways to consider numbers flexibly.

Accordingly, Junior School students will be frequently engaged in visualising numbers and using ‘number talks’ as ways to consider their own and others’ approaches to manipulating numbers. They will be making, sharing and testing conjectures and developing deep, lasting understanding.

Thankfully, Wesley our Arts Centre Manager, is a genius at making the wild ideas in my head a visual reality on the stage!

Hollywood Royalty at Patteson House Dinner

DCIM115MEDIADJI_0546.JPG

You could have been forgiven for thinking you were on the set of a Hollywood movie on Friday of Week 4, as Patteson held its annual House Dinner. The theme was ‘Classic Movies’, with each year level dressing up as famous characters. Year 7 went to ‘infinity and beyond’ with their Toy Story-inspired costumes. It was a case of ‘we have a Hulk’ and most of the other characters from The Avengers in Year 8. We had ‘more than a donkey’ from the Year 9s, with their theme movie being Shrek. ‘The Force’ was certainly with the Year 10s with their Star Wars-inspired outfits. Every Year 11 was a ‘Golden Ticket’ winner with their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed costumes. Year 12 were far from ‘clueless’ with their Clueless-inspired attire. Finally, the staff were ‘shaken but not stirred’, dressed as characters from the James Bond films.

The costumes that all the girls and staff put together were amazing and very creative, and a best dressed individual and group from each year was awarded at the end of the night. We also had a delicious feast including wedges, pizza, donuts and ice cream, as well as lolly and popcorn bags. Throughout the night, we played lots of fun games including ‘guess the song’ and a ‘Kahoot’. Thank you to all the teachers, parents and, of course, Patteson girls for making the night so enjoyable and one that will go down in history. Go Patty!

Receptions Delve Deep into Science Week

W5 - Reception 2

As part of our explorations into National Science Week – Deep Blue: Innovations for the future of our oceans – the Reception students have been learning about the many oceans around our world, how oceans have different zones, as well as identifying living things that exist in the ocean.

On Wednesday, the girls inquired into how waves are formed, linking with the physical science concept of displacement. The girls created their own wave bottles by using water, food colouring and oil, and noticed how the oil and water repel one another.

Environment Club Branches Out with Ferguson Friends

W5 - Environment Club 2

On Wednesday, a small group from the Environment Club (EC) were lucky enough to help out our neighbouring Ferguson Conservation Park. Geoffrey Bishop, President of the Friends of Ferguson organisation, was invited to speak to us about the biodiversity of Ferguson Park. EC members volunteered to participate in the restoration of the natural habitat, which will be ongoing throughout the semester. We are looking forward to helping plant native species, categorise the different species growing in the park, as well as weeding and taking photographic records of the native orchids.

On this occasion, we planted native grass. We had to find areas where there was very little introduced grass as this competes with native grass, then dug shallow holes in which we planted the seeds. Ranger Natalie Lewis helped us out, showing us the best techniques. She also spoke about what being a Park Ranger entails and gave us all the opportunity to ask questions about working in environmental fields.

We all had so much fun and learned a lot about our native Australian environment. We are all looking forward to our next opportunity to volunteer in Ferguson Park in Week 9!

Fundraising Vision for RSB

W5 - IB CAS Fundraiser

On Wednesday of Week 7, the Year 12 IB CAS class will be holding a stall to raise money for RSB (Royal Society for the Blind).

As such, please bring an umbrella if wet weather is forecast as you may not be able to take shelter under the stands.

All ticket holders will be emailed with final details of COVID-Safe measures before the event. Should changes to these arrangements be necessary due to amended requirements, we will update you in a timely manner.

ATHLETICS / CROSS COUNTRY

Once again, Saints had some great results with students competing in the State Cross Country Championships. Malaika McLeod won the Bronze medal in the girls’ U14 3km, with a time of 11:05 in a very close race with the winner at 11:00 and 2nd-placed at 11:02. Daisy Braithwaite finished 4th in the U16 over 4km.

The fourth round of the Schools’ Cross Country was hosted by Saint Ignatius’ College. After a tricky start and confusion due to the weather causing late changes to the course, Saints Girls took it all in their stride, performing remarkably well. All team members continue to compete with a high level of determination and finish as high in the order as they can giving Saints points towards the shields. Well done to all team members. – Neil Fuller (Director of Sport)

AUSSIE RULES

Open – Saints 1.0 – 6 defeated by Seymour 4.6 – 30
Although the score was not in our favour, the girls played their best game of footy yet. They never stopped fighting and played the style of game that we have been developing over our weeks of training. We made space across the field and laid some great tackles, as well as good marks and kicks. It was a tough game but the girls remained focused and optimistic, never giving up or losing motivation. Special mention must go to Lucy White who played a great game as the ruck, despite it being her first time. Likewise, Kellie Bested had excellent spacing and could read the play well. The girls put in all the effort they could and they should be very proud of themselves and their achievements so far. – Bella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 2.4 – 16 defeated by Seymour 6.6 – 42
The girls began the game on the back foot after the opposition kicked the first 2 goals and we could not contain forward 50 entries. A re-set at quarter-time changed the momentum, and through the 2nd and 3rd quarters, we were the dominant team, rarely giving Seymour space to move. Annie Warrick, playing at centre half back, controlled any ball kicked with height towards her zone and sent it forward for Saints with a strong kick. At full back, Ruby Richards had her best game, preventing goals from a much bigger opponent, whilst Maddy Lisle at the other end displayed some agility and created space for her team. Once again, Charlotte McAuliffe never stopped running and Sophie Ricciuto showed poise with the ball in hand. The match was even at three quarter-time, but the girls could not lock the ball in the forward line and a couple of quick transitions spelt the end of the contest. Goals: Chloe Porter and Grace Richards.

BADMINTON

Well done to all the girls who played on the weekend, putting in a tremendous effort into your games and recording some amazing results. Our As, Bs, Cs, Ds and Es all defeated their opponents. The girls are working really hard at training which is evidently paying off in their game play. Keep up the amazing work girls, I’m so proud of you all! – Amelie Dunda (Captain)

Open A – Saints 6 defeated Seymour 0
Best Players: Yang Yang Gu, Gloria Gao, Amelie Dunda, Mahala Truscott

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints had a bye

Year 6 White – Saints 9 defeated by Walford 10
The girls played extremely well and were unlucky not to win. The girls did a great job in defence and worked together well in offence. – Sarah Matheson (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 27 defeated Walford Gold 8
Another great win for the girls, defeating Walford Gold. Their defensive pressure was too strong which resulted in multiple steals. This allowed for many fast breaks and open shots. An excellent shooting game from Wei Ning Khoo and Imogen Pearce, both scoring 10 points. The enthusiasm and encouragement from players on and off the court was great to see. – Katherine Perkas (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open – Saints 9 defeated Seymour 0
The girls played awesome hockey on Saturday and showcased the skills we have practised during training. In the first quarter, 5 goals were scored, indicating that we capitalised on all attacking opportunities. The strikers worked collectively as our first line of attack and passed around the goalies pads to find the back board. In the second quarter, we switched positions around and gave the defenders a go in attacking positions. Well done to Winnie Vartuli and Georgina Keough who both scored goals after moving up to the forward line from defence. Chloe Cardone gave left halfback a go in the final quarter and did a great job at marking her player and finding midfield passes. It was excellent to have seven different goal scorers from the 9 goals scored, showing that the girls played as a team and that everyone is capable of playing different positions. – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 12 defeated Glenelg 6
The girls played another great game. It was tight, with Saints being only 3 goals up going into the last quarter. However, the girls lifted their intensity, shooting many quick goals leading to another win. Their effort to get back and defend on their fast breaks was great, which led to many turnovers. Congratulations to Emily Bates in goals for making many saves both in the air and on the ground. Lara Maione and Lucy Tulloch did a top job in defence, gaining procession of many ground balls. Congratulations girls with another great win! – Millie Wilkin (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 11 – Saints Blue 5 defeated by North Adelaide 13
This game was certainly a challenge for the team, with our defence placed under pressure. Our opposition had very strong stick skills, making it difficult for Saints to keep up with the pace. As the game progressed, the team improved their ability to keep tight defence and it provided an opportunity for them to develop their lacrosse skills. They have learnt how to overcome defeat, and to ‘keep their heads up’ – it’s not always about winning. A good effort and special mention to Matilda Purvis and Valencia Capobianco who were both great in goals. At training, we will look at improving our transition from defence to attack, practising speed through the midfield, and passing around defence to avoid intercepts. Although the girls may have been unhappy with the result, the team spirit remained strong and we will continue working hard for the remainder of the season. Looking forward to the next game. – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints White 14 defeated East Torrens Payneham 3
The game started well with many shots being taken, especially by Lois Burton-Howard (Year 4) and Lilly Silvani who scored 9 goals between them. It was great to see several turnovers through Neela (Year 4) and Anvika Singh (Year 4) never giving up on the ground balls. Mathilda Begg (Year 3) showed her developing skills by also getting ground balls and then looking for a free team member to pass to. As the girls were up by a lot, the mercy rule was implemented where they had to have three passes before shooting. Running with the ball was again done well in the match, especially by Grace Marshall (Year 3) and Scarlett Schinella (Year 3). In defence, Ruby Kelly (Year 4) was particularly strong by sticking to players and having her stick up. Our goalies for the match were Willow Chong (Year 3) and Lola Silvani. Goal scorers were Lois (5), Lily (4), Anvika (1), Scarlett (1), Ruby (2) and Neela (1). All of the girls played a great team game, demonstrating their improving skills. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 36 defeated by Westminster 74
Westminster is one of the strongest teams in the school netball competition, and I am so proud of the girls’ determination and how they gave 100% effort throughout. The score board does not reflect how the girls played. Our best quarter was the third, winning 12 – 9, due to the fast pace drives down the court from Ruby Deakin, and accurate feeding into the circle by Alexia Politis, Sadie Vikor-Lam and Amelia Pudney. The shooters, Maggie Bailey and Anna White, performed outstandingly against tall opponents, using their quick foot work to their advantage and setting up on their players in order to create space. Best players, awarded by Coach Sue, were Olivia Kelly, Sarah Wishart and Alexia Politis for their intensity and interruption of play: intercepting and making many touches to the ball. – Hannah Freeman (Captain)

Open B – Saints 35 defeated by Westminster 47
The Open Bs had a good first half against Westminster but lost momentum in the second. Nevertheless, the girls still did well to apply pressure on their players when needed, and at times, moved the ball swiftly down the court. Both Lucy and Sadie played very well in GD and had lots of touches against much taller opponents. Tahlia had a good first half in GA and did well to drive the ball into the circle. It was a difficult, fast-paced game against a very tall opposition but a great effort from all the girls. Thanks to Dana for filling in for us for the first time. – Gemma Schaedel

Open E1 – Saints 38 defeated Seymour 30
This was an exciting match with only a few goals in it at the end of the first three quarters. The girls played their best quarter in the last and took out the win by 8 goals! Another great win for the girls. Best players were Amelia Goehr for her amazing shooting and Tilly McCormack for her excellent defensive work, especially in the last quarter, making a number of turnovers to help secure the win. Great job girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Open E2 – Saints 8 defeated by Pembroke 27
A tough game against Pembroke, but I am very proud of how the girls took on feedback during the breaks and worked it into their play the following quarter. They are constantly improving each week. Best players were Lucy White who worked hard to move the ball down the court and make turnovers, and Lara Wakeham for her performance in the goal ring. Great effort girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Year 10A – Saints 30 defeated by Westminster 37
This was definitely our game to lose, and despite some unfortunate calls, we stressed to the girls that we can only focus on what we can control. The main positives were defensive pressure and transition down the court which is definitely improving and all of the girls are understanding their role within the team. Things that we can continue to work on are choice of pass and execution of skill. Even though we lost, there was still great improvement from the girls and it was a solid game. – Milli Gentle (Coach)

Year 10B – Saints 14 defeated by Westminster 27
Strong game from the Bs despite the score. We got a lot of ball defensively, however, we did not convert on these opportunities down in the shooting circle. All players are showing great improvement and also understanding their role. Their second phase off the centre pass has increased immensely and they continue to improve each week. – Katie Dancer (Coach)

Year 10C – Saints 2 defeated by Immanuel 41
Tough game for the girls coming up against Immanuel. Everyone applied great pressure to the opposition and created many turnovers, but just falling short in turning those into goals. Great work by one of our key defenders, Ayshviina Nair, who played a quarter in goals and scored 1 of the goals! – Elena Vaananen (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 41 defeated Westminster 23
The game was highly-contested in the first half, taking a 1 goal lead. The girls were then extremely dominant in the third quarter, with our shooters Annie Warrick and Chloe Porter having stand out performances to help extend our lead to 14 and pushing it out to 18 in the fourth quarter. – Della Griffith (Coach)

Year 9B – Saints 36 drew with Westminster 36
The girls played a fantastic second half, to get themselves back into the game from 6 goals down. At training, I plan to focus on being able to slow down and settle the play. – Natasha Dinan (Coach)

Year 9C – Saints 20 defeated by Pembroke 27
Playing Pembroke for the second time, it was impressive to see how well the girls adjusted from the first game. It was also terrific to watch how much the team has developed and improved from the start of the season. Best players were Isobel Yelland and Eliza Monaghan who were both extremely committed defensively. – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 28 defeated by Westminster 40
The girls did a great job and put up a good fight against Westminster. We all tried our best, yet Westminster just wanted it more. The conditions were rough as the courts were very slippery and wet. Sophie Ricciuto did especially well, leading all the girls down the court and worked well in the goal ring with Charlie Piper. – Soph Ryan

Year 8B – Saints 18 defeated by Westminster 23
It was a tough game and the girls all played extremely well and tried their hardest. Well done to Poppy Oswald and Olivia Oakes who were awarded players of the match. Both helped the team to play their best and there were some great leads and intercepts. The girls had a great first two quarters, with support from the sidelines. Good job to Alice Braithwaite and Ayla Blaskett for shooting some impressive goals, while Charlotte Norman and Ruby Adams were great at getting the rebound and defending the opposition. Good job girls! – Daisy Braithwaite

Year 8C – Saints 35 defeated Westminster 18
The girls started off strongly again and were impressive in the way they built on their skills as the game progressed. They were dominant in every quarter, which was largely due to their quick passes into Zara Chessell and Ruby Powell in goals. They both showed a good awareness of each other’s movement in the ring and an ability to position themselves well to maximise their chance of scoring goals. A special thanks to Naadiya Ishaq for playing up with us this week. – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 8D – Saints 0 defeated by Seymour 27
The girls had a tough game and it wasn’t quite our best performance. Unfortunately, we were unable to transition the ball down to our attacking end to get us on the scoreboard. Although it wasn’t our best game and Seymour played very well, I was impressed with the girls’ resilience and effort until the final whistle. – Gina Barker (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 7 defeated by Westminster 52
This was a really tough game but the girls managed to go out and give it their best. First quarter wasn’t as strong as we all hoped; we were all rattled but the opponents kept up a strong game. Second quarter we came out stronger and eventually had a bit of fun with the game as we were down by quite a bit. Anna Venning stayed solid throughout and didn’t stop until the final whistle. Asha Eaton played an amazing defensive game, taking intercepts whilst putting pressure on the shooters. Tough game girls, you all tried your hardest. Next time we can come out stronger and ready for a win! – Jodhi Pincombe

Year 7B – Saints 21 defeated Westminster 4
The girls started off strongly from the first whistle, allowing them to get the first goal. They then worked well defensively. Through girls working together as a team, it allowed them to create many opportunities and record a well-deserved a win. – Nikola Carr (Coach)

Year 4 Blue – Saints had a bye

Year 4 White – Saints 11 defeated Pembroke Green 9
The girls played Pembroke Green for the second time this season. Maisy Ion and Lois Burton-Howard were quick to score 3 goals in the starting quarter, but the constant pressure applied by Pembroke definitely made it harder for Saints to get the ball. The girls were reminded at half-time to lead forward into space and to keep front position, and this definitely showed a huge improvement in the girls’ connection down the court. At the start of the fourth quarter, Saints were 2 goals down. Their movement and passing was perfect which allowed them to drift away from their players and remain free. Our shooters were on fire, scoring 5 goals, whilst our defenders on the other end ensured that Pembroke only scored once. I’m very happy to get another win! – Sivani Sivasuthan (Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 4 defeated Seymour 0
Such a shame this match against Seymour was rained out. Our team started out very strongly and although we only played about six or seven minutes of the match, I think it was clear that it was going to be one of our best matches yet. Sasha Connor managed to score 3 goals in this short time and in a non-preferred position. An excellent effort! Looking forward to the next match. – Rebecca Scott-Toms (Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 2 defeated by Mercedes 4
Unfortunately, the Open As lost in a high-scoring game against Mercedes. The girls started the game with high energy and a drive to win, despite the poor weather conditions. This enthusiasm resulted in Ashley Piper scoring the first goal after fending off two opposition players. The girls really improved on getting the ball into space for the attackers to run onto, but we will need to work on our shooting with power in the coming weeks. Annie Bradshaw did, however, score a very impressive goal from the edge of the goalie box, making it past the goalie and into the bottom right corner. Also, it was great to have our goalie back from injury, Kendra Ware, who played very confidently and communicated well with the rest of the team. – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Seymour 5
Once again, it was a good start, but unfortunately, a contentious penalty was awarded against us to give Seymour a 1 goal head start. Not long after, the game was on hold for a few minutes as there was a downpour that produced hail. Following the short break, we created a few chances in the first half but didn’t take them and had some more lapses in our play that allowed Seymour to snag a couple more goals before half-time. The second half was a turnaround with more hunger and aggression for the ball, which led to a few chances. We were able to keep the play in our attacking half but did not manage to score. Unfortunately again, once the opposition went for goal, they were able to take their chances and score a couple more. The difference was us not taking our chances and having that bit more hunger and aggression for the ball. The weather conditions may have been all over the place but the girls kept their spirit and ran hard and will be ready to hit the score board next time. – TJ Scarsgill (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 2 drew with Seymour 2
We started off strongly in the wet, putting the opposition’s defence under pressure. Some hard work from our wingers Maddie Harrex and Lilly Maerschel resulted in a goal for Januri Wagaarachchi from a free kick. As the weather worsened, some light hail forced the game to be stopped midway through the first half. When play resumed, we were unable to capitalise on our attacks, but at the other end, captain Grace Beaumont made some great saves. Unfortunately, she was unable to keep out a long range goal that sailed into the top corner which was very unlucky. With the scores locked, we conceded an own goal from a miss-kicked clearance out of defence. The girls kept their heads up and fought on with great effort in the cold, windy and muddy conditions. Ariel Spartalis and Mary Stavrou worked hard with tackling, and Georgia Evans and Levanya De Silva worked tirelessly through midfield. We came back with a goal, with Jan hitting the back of the net after a fantastic run to draw the game at full-time. – Ange Gouvielos (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 1 defeated Wilderness 0
A great result from the girls. Working with a big pitch, we did really well to try get the ball from defence to attack and run with each other. Lydia Burrough was tenacious at the back, winning every single tackle and keeping us in the game. Asha Eaton made 4 amazing saves and showed desperation to keep the ball out and not let them score. Monika Ceplitis and Alicia Toh were awesome holding down the midfield, with Stella Rasheed making some terrific runs down the wing! Well done girls. – Nathan Reade (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 3 defeated by Loreto Blue 6
This was a well-played game that, unfortunately, resulted in a loss. Despite the score, the girls never dropped their heads and continued fighting until the final whistle. Our newest team member, Izzy Tucker, and Grace Brockhouse both played a great game in attack, always going back for a second effort and applying some strong tackles. Alyssa Piantedosi and Lucy Lowry worked together to produce our 3 goals, 2 from Alyssa and 1 from Lucy. The goals were all scored from a distance, with some impressive power and accuracy. Special mention to our two goalkeepers, Eliza Brill Reed and Ruby Clark, who must be commended for their courage to step up and take on the position. – Ellie Anderson (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 2 defeated by Wilderness 4
Another strong effort from the whole team. The fantastic defence line, led by Romana, played a tireless game, repeatedly winning over the ball. Eleni Schulze had a consistent and determined performance in the midfield, playing a key role in bringing the ball up the field. Despite the loss, it was a well-fought game from the whole team! Thank you to goalkeeper Shwethakie Karunarathna, and goalkeeper and goalscorer Izzy Huf. – Lucy Benn (Student Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints 7 defeated Wilderness Orange 1
Game three of season 2020 saw the team swept with illness. With many players out of the line up, the remaining players took every available minute and made the most of their chances. In true 3-4 soccer style, the game opened with a blaze of goals coming off the boots of Beatrice Tolley. Anisha Pahuja played her best game for the year, dribbling, passing and shooting, narrowly missing her opportunities to squeeze the ball past the Wilderness goalkeeper. Lauren Disney entered the game halfway through the first half with immediate impact, scoring 2 goals in the first half and adding another 3 to her tally in the second. Valentina Patino dazzled many Wilderness opponents with exceptional foot skills and also played her best game for Saints this year. – Mark Routley (Coach)

Spirits Raised by House Devotion

Although perhaps somewhat of a cliché, I believe that, more often than not, if you meet someone you’ve not met before in Adelaide, sooner or later, you’ll be asked where you went to school. The extension of that is that if two Saints Girls’ Old Scholars meet for the first time, they’ll inevitable ask, ‘What House were you in?’

Richard Lisle inside 220When I meet Old Scholars returning to look around the School for the first time in a few years, or coming to enrol their daughters as Saints Girls, talk always turns to the current fortunes of their old House, and whether some of the same events are still running.

St Peter’s Girls has had a House system since 1927. We’ve been a proud advocate for the benefits that are provided by a vertically aligned House, or family, within the larger School community. Our girls have the opportunity to get to know girls from other year groups, compete fairly but fiercely against their year group peers, wear their House colours with pride, and cheer their loudest at the first opportunity given to them!

This term is when we place extra emphasis on the value of the House. All four, starting with Patteson this week, are given a ‘Spirit Week’. During the week, girls are allowed to wear a flash of their House colour. House leaders run a Chapel Service during which the history of the House is explained, their unique character celebrated, and challenges to other Houses are often laid. The week ends with a House Dinner on the Friday night. These are organised by the Year 11s in each House, with Year 12 students and parents as guests of honour. Each week gives us the chance to celebrate the different Houses and remember a little of our distant and not-so-distant history, whilst also gearing up for one of the biggest House events, Sports Day, occurring in Week 7.

With nearly all staff also members of a House, and with parents and even pets prepared to dress up in our four House colours, Interhouse sport, Sports Day, Swimming Carnival and Choral Night are joyous milestones in the passing of every school year that have the capacity to ignite and strengthen our community spirit.

Music Wizard Visits Saints Girls

W4 - Guest Artist

Critically-acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, composer, music educator and record producer Adam Page dazzled Saints Girls yesterday with his unique talent and upbeat humour.

He opened with a concert for Year 4 – 6 students in the Arts Centre. Following that, he hosted a workshop for Year 9 – 12 Music students. At lunchtime, Adam again wowed the crowds with his dynamic repertoire, including mixing a song with sounds created by students and staff. He concluded by inviting our Director of Music Sally Rounsevell on stage to rap Dr Seuss lines to his beats!

Renowned for his remarkable solo multi-instrumental looping performances, Adam has carved his path internationally as a composer. He has written major works for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington, Zephyr Quartet, and co-composed on numerous occasions with celebrated Kiwi composer John Psathas.

Our girls and staff were thoroughly impressed and entertained by Adam’s ability to harness and manipulate different instruments and sounds. Here’s a taste of his colourful visit:

A Message From Our SRC Prefect

W4 - Prefect Article SRC

This term, the SRC has been busy working on a major project which we are excited to finally share with you: a School mascot! Our blue and white striped tiger will appear at many School events with the aim of increasing School spirit. Students across all Sub-Schools voted to name the mascot and we have decided on ‘Tigs’! We are very excited about our new addition to the School community and hope Tigs will be enjoyed by the girls for many years to come.

The SRC has also focused on introducing more seating options around the School grounds. After distributing surveys earlier in the year, the SRC found there was a demand from both staff and students for outdoor tables and benches that can be used at recess and lunch, or even during an outdoor lesson. We are in the process of finalising our designs and look forward to sharing our progress soon.

I am extremely pleased with the engagement and enthusiasm demonstrated by each SRC representative this year. They are passionate about making a difference and are committed to making our School an even better place. We are excited to continue our projects for the rest of the term and look forward to seeing what we can achieve.

Old Scholars in the Spotlight

W4 - Old Scholar

I sit in my new classroom in Year 6, waiting for my students to arrive for the day, and am filled with such a sense of joyful homecoming. I am still a proud Patteson member, I still have my old blazer hanging in a spare wardrobe at home and I still love this beautiful School as much as I did when I first walked up the path towards Chiverton when I was 12 years old.

I attended Saints as a student from Year 8, graduating in 1992, and later served as President of the Old Scholars’ Association. I went on to study Law and Psychology, and practised as a civil litigator for a number of years. However, my dream to be a teacher was always bubbling away in the background and, after moving interstate with my husband to live, I left the law to undertake my Bachelor’s degree in Primary Teaching and pursue the career I truly felt passionate about.

Living in Sydney for nearly two decades, I enjoyed many years of experience in teaching and leadership roles, most recently at Presbyterian Ladies’ College in Sydney. I have taught across various year levels and led Learning Support programs, headed the English department, Gifted and Talented courses, advised on professional development, Debating, Drama and Tournament of Minds. I have been lucky enough to be formally recognised with awards for Excellence in Teaching. I have a deep love of learning and a belief that our young people genuinely have the potential to make the world a better place.

Returning to South Australia has been a happy homecoming, made even brighter by a chance to contribute to the education of a new generation of women in a School that holds a special place in my heart.

Maths Quiz Equals Great Night

W4 - Maths Quiz

This year, due to social distancing protocols, Saints Girls was unable to host the annual MASA Quiz Night in its usual format. So, it was run a little differently, with teams from our School only – we were guaranteed to win!

The quiz itself is made up of four rounds containing Maths, Sudoku, General Knowledge and Word Scrambles, with teams racing against each other to solve the most problems and answer the most questions. Not only does the night test the brain, many students’ culinary skills are also put to the test with ‘bring your own food’ being an event attraction. Cheeseboards, home baked cookies, pizza…you name it, it was there!

After participating in the quiz for the past three years with the same group of girls, this year, my team was lucky enough to win the overall Senior competition. A shoutout to Ella Liddy, Stella Clark and Emily Downie who were all members of the winning team. I’d also like to send a huge thank you to the teachers who gave up their Wednesday night in the name of Maths. All the girls appreciated it greatly and I strongly encourage more girls to give it a go next year!

Kennion Jam and Vegemite Drive

W3 - Kennion

Kennion House is running a jam and Vegemite drive in Weeks 4, 5 and 6 for their House Charity. KickStart for Kids is a South Australian organisation that provides a breakfast and lunch program for underprivileged school children. Donating various spreads, including jam and Vegemite, helps these children to fuel their stomachs for the school day ahead.

There will be three collection points in the School: the Front Office, the Middle School and Student Services. Items that can be donated are honey, Vegemite and jam (no nuts please). As an added incentive, there will be a prize for the most successful Home Group. When dropping off your donation, please write your Home Group on a post-it note and attach to the jar/s.

This is a School-wide initiative, with all Houses and families invited to support this worthy cause.

Year 9 Geography Explores e-waste

W4 - Geography

Last term in Geography, we studied the impact of e-waste on the Earth and what exactly e-waste is. This was a very interesting subject, as we learnt about the affect it has on the physical and human environment around the world. We were astonished to discover how less developed countries often accept the e-waste of more developed countries in order to earn money. The e-waste can leak chemicals, polluting the soil, water and air, causing severe health problems for the people living in the country. We also looked at companies who recycle e-waste, including TechCollect and Cleanaway, and rated them on how well they handle e-waste. This was a very thought-provoking assignment as we had to analyse different factors that would influence a potential customer taking their e-waste to a reputable company.

We ended the term on a high note by creating some fashionable e-waste jewellery. This included earrings, necklaces, bracelets, broaches, rings and keychains. It was a fun assignment as we were given full creative responsibility and independence to design anything we wanted, as long as it included e-waste. We enjoyed this topic very much as it was engaging and entertaining.

Friends of The Arts – Senior Drama Production Fundraiser

W4 - FoA

Despite the cold, blustery winter weather, our parent FOA volunteers were on-site fundraising at the SACE Senior Drama Production Charm on Friday evening. The ladies, Belinda and Tania, went above and beyond the volunteer requirements, braving the arctic conditions to support our girls by providing a bar and refreshment service.

Friends of The Arts fundraising initiatives at School events directly benefit our girls and The Arts Department. We have recently funded 30 new microphone belts which are a great addition to our professional audio inventory. They are specialist belts used in theatre, television and sport, made from a beige, neoprene material to minimise visibility when on stage and under lights. They have a Velcro fixing system for comfort without the tell-tale fastener bumps when worn under shirts or tight-fitting tops. The mic pack sits securely inside the pouch.

Thank you for your ongoing support of The Arts at Saints Girls, and we look forward to seeing you at the Year 5 Production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda JR. later in the term.

ATHLETICS

Congratulations to Daisy Braithwaite (Year 8) who won the Under 15 Race Walking State Championships over 5kms, recording a 50 second personal best time. – Neil Fuller (Director of Sport)

AUSSIE RULES

Open – Saints 1.5 – 11 defeated by Pulteney 5.2 – 32
Although Saints had a slow start against Pulteney, the following three quarters were some of the best the girls have ever played! Our teamwork and communication has significantly improved as well as our ability to fight for the ball when it is in dispute. It’s also great to see when our drills in training are being used throughout the game. Our strong fight and want for the ball definitely showed in the last quarter when Charlotte Cohen scored our only goal. A special mention must also go to Lucy White who quickly adapted to her new position in ruck, and Anda Ceplite who demonstrated excellent grit in the forward line. Astounding team effort girls, can’t wait to improve even more in the games to come! – Saskia Jonats

Middle – Saints 6.10 – 46 defeated Pulteney 1.0 – 6
Saints Girls had an amazing win against Pulteney in a very tough game. The girls stayed in there and never gave up no matter how tall the opposition were, always going in hard at the ball. We grew stronger and stronger, displaying plenty of determination with our second efforts. We constantly marked up players as soon as there was a turnover to ensure no one was free. The girls also tackled fiercely and led to space to make a free option. Great job by Alvie Iley, Poppy Oswald, Charlie Piper, Grace Richards and Ruby Richards for scoring goals. I am positive that we will strive to improve, achieve more wins and, most importantly, develop our football in the season ahead.  Lilly Maerschel

BADMINTON

Congratulations to all the girls who played on Saturday. We had another successful outcome with our As, Bs, Ds and Es all defeating their opponents. It’s amazing to see our girls improving their badminton skills every week, I am so proud of you all!

A special mention to our A grade team who played Badminton Knockout on Wednesday, winning two of the three matches. It was a great effort against one of the teams with an Australian player and State player. There was some tough but healthy competition out there. Keep up the great work girls! – Amelie Dunda (Captain)

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 25 defeated by Wilderness Blue 26
After being 20-8 down at half-time, the girls did a great job of focusing on their defence and playing one-on-one to get back into the game. Isobel McArthur had a big impact scoring her 12 points (and a free throw), but also got her team involved. It was good to see some other girls get involved and take some shots as well. Their confidence grows every week. Great effort girls! – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 20 defeated Walford Blue 16
Another great win for the team, defeating Walford Blue. It was a much closer contest than the last game but the girls managed to handle the defensive pressure from Walford to hold onto a 4 point win. It was a top team effort with multiple girls scoring and good ball movement. The encouragement from the girls on the bench was great to see.  Katherine Perkas (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open – Saints 5 defeated Pembroke 1
The girls continued to play well-structured, competitive hockey in the third round against Pembroke. Constant pressure was applied on the opposition’s defenders, resulting in numerous turnovers from our attacking press and a goal in the first five minutes. Amelia Lucas used her speed to her advantage and gave many run on balls to our speedy strikers, who capitalised their opportunities. Emily McCorley and Georgina Keough were strong in defence and generated great attack forward resulting in success. Congratulations to everyone who scored and contributed to the 5-1 win! – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 13 defeated North Adelaide 4
The girls had a great game against North Adelaide, securing another win. Coming into the game knowing North Adelaide is a strong team and one of our biggest threats, the girls went hard from the start with constant hustle for ground balls. Although North Adelaide shot the first few goals, the girls persisted and came back strongly. The transition of the ball down the field from defence to attack was particularly good, which allowed for many scoring opportunities. Special mention to our goalie Grace Jones who made many awesome saves, and Zoe Pool and Claris Stolcman with 4 goals each supported by Alannah Godfrey and Cleo Hart who scored 2 each. – Millie Wilkin (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 11 – Saints Blue 14 defeated Eagles 1
This game was without a doubt the highlight of the season so far, with Saints Girls dominating from the first quarter. All team members played a strong game, and it was so wonderful to see not only the girls supporting each other by ensuring the ball was passed to everyone, but also the parents cheering the team along. The girls took a fair play approach, assisting each other and showing determination. Our younger or newer players were made welcome and supported by the older, more experienced team members. This game demonstrated that the team has developed a strong understanding of lacrosse gameplay strategies and skills such as positioning, accurate goal shooting and moving into ‘back up’ in which players would assist those behind the goal as an extra support. Looking forward to the next game so the team can continue their success, and perhaps we can work on using our speed to dodge players and moving in front of opposition for intercepts. Well done Saints Blue, you should all be proud of yourselves, I certainly am! – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints White 6 defeated by East Torrens/Payneham 7
All of the girls played well and showed their improving skills. In attack, everyone was running hard and spreading out, particularly Anvika Singh (Year 4) and Ruby Kelly (Year 4). It was great to see many girls like Grace Marshall (Year 3) and Lily Silvani catch balls on the full. At half-time, it was even and the girls were determined to try win. Big long throws were made by Lola Silvani and Scarlett Schinella (Year 3) to help transition the ball. In defence, the girls were always looking for players to stay on, particularly Mathilda Begg (Year 3). Everyone did a great job and goal scorers were Ruby (1), Lily (2), Lola (1), Willow (1) and ETP got us a goal too.  Lucy Martin (Coach)

NETBALL

Year 8/9 Knockout
The Year 9As welcomed Mathilda Thomas and Sophie Ricciuto to the team to play in the State Knockout carnival involving Marryatville and St Mary’s College.

Saints faced Marryatville in the first game which was led by some great defence by Willow Stewart-Rattray and Chloe Porter who won many rebounds to set up attacking plays. In the mid-court, Ellie Humphrey, Sophie Dansie, Pearl Richards and Mathilda Thomas provide great links from defence into attack where Annie Warrick and Maddie Harrex shot with confidence. Sophie Ricciuto made the most of her court time and also was a great contributor in goals. Saints 48 defeated Marryatville 16.

In the second and final game, Saints played St Mary’s who had also defeated Marryatville, so the winner would qualify for the State Finals. Saints had a slow start, missing a number of passes and turning the ball over to be down 2-10 at quarter-time. With positive feedback and some position changes, Saints were on fire in the second, with Sophie Ricciuto linking with Annie Warrick in goals, and Willow and Chloe once again dominant in defence with great support from Georgia Mallick. Through Saints’ disciplined work, they managed to level the score at 17-17 at half-time. Despite some on-going great work by Grace and Pearl Richards, Mathilda Thomas and Sophie Dansie, St Mary’s goalies shot at nearly 100% to edge us out, and Saints’ gallant effort couldn’t bridge the gap in the final term, going down 28 to 35. Overall, an outstanding effort by all players. – Neil Fuller (Director of Sport)

Open A – Saints 44 defeated Concordia 41
What a game! The Open A team fought with determination and enthusiasm against Concordia, resulting in our first win of the season. The girls’ one-on-one defence enabled many opportunities for turnovers, and strong drives down the court created a fast pace. Special mentions go to Ruby Deakin and Sadie Vikor-Lam for filling in. Both girls had an amazing game, with their strong hands over the ball in defence and leading towards the ball in attack. Congratulations to Olivia Kelly for being the best player on court with her numerous intercepts in goal keeper and one-on-one pressure against her opponent. I am so proud of all the girls for their fantastic effort and congratulate them on our first win of the season. Let’s keep it up girls. – Hannah Freeman (Captain)

Open B – Saints 45 defeated Concordia 35
The Open Bs had a strong, consistent game, maintaining the lead in each quarter. Joss shot extremely well, hardly missing a goal despite intense pressure from the defence. Milly Brett did well to drive the ball down court and feed it to our shooters. Lucy White and Martha McCormack from the 10As filled in and were both exceptional in defence with many touches. Everyone applied pressure to their opponents and came away with a well deserved win! – Gemma Schaedel

Open E1 – Saints 37 defeated Pulteney 1
Another great win! A good well-rounded performance from everyone working cohesively to get the ball down the court to our shooters. Best players were Zara Stefani for her work and encouragement in the mid-court and Siena Kulinski for her great defensive pressure in the ring making a number of turnovers. Everyone should be commended on their great sportsmanship! Well done girls, keep up the good work! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Open E2 – Saints 10 defeated by Pembroke 23
A great game. The girls started off strongly in the first quarter, finishing it 4-3. Although they weren’t able to hold the lead, their efforts and enthusiasm remained high throughout the whole game. Good work girls! – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 10A – Saints had a bye

Year 10B – Saints 31 defeated Concordia 12
Really impressive game from the Bs. It was good to play a few of the As down, and I think the leadership demonstrated by them helped the B’s lift and get off to a good start. Really strong defensive pressure throughout the game, specifically coming through with two hands for intercepts and learning that it’s much more efficient in creating turnovers. Shooters are understanding movement a lot better, when to hold and when to present as a front option. Great improvement across the side. – Katie Dancer (Coach)

Year 10C – Saints 18 defeated by Pembroke 28
The girls played a consistent game with heaps of energy. Although they lost, it was really positive how well they worked and supported each other as a team. Great effort girls. – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 48 defeated Concordia 37
Another good game after a slow first quarter. The girls implemented the centre passes that they practised at training and improved on their backline throw-ins which was good to see. – Della Griffith (Coach)

Year 9B – Saints 22 defeated by Concordia 41
We were a bit slow to get started which cost us in the first quarter. The girls gained more momentum throughout and were fairly even over the last three quarters, but unfortunately just couldn’t make up for the slow start. I plan to focus on leading patterns at training. – Natasha Dinan (Coach)

Year 9C – Saints 28 defeated Concordia 22
Another great win for the team. It was an impressive display with fierce attack. It is inspiring to see how the girls worked together and communicated on the court in order to move the ball to our end. Best player was Isobel Yelland with her great intercepting skills, and Lydia Tolley for her shooting and flexibility in playing positions – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 36 defeated Concordia 27
The girls started of very strongly, with nice leads and great communication. Concordia were a tough opponent, but all the girls pushed through with some amazing plays and won. Throughout the game, there was amazing and consistent shooting from our shooters Charlie Piper, Soph Ryan and Sophie Ricciuto. There were some top plays from the defence through to the mid-court. Great job girls! – Gloria Zou

Year 8B – Saints 32 defeated by Concordia 33
Everyone played well and were full of energy. It was a very tight game; Scarlett Dillon, Ayla Blaskett and Alice Braithwaite were terrific in the goal circle using their voice, moving around and shooting goals. Poppy Oswald and Daisy Braithwaite were good at getting the ball, moving around and using their voice, with Ruby Adams and Charlotte Norman doing an excellent job at defending and getting the rebounds. It was a tight game and everyone was great at calling for the ball and defending. Good work girls.  Zoe Duncan (Coach)

Year 8C – Saints 13 defeated by Seymour 23
Despite this being our first loss for this season, the girls put in a consistently strong effort throughout. Their ability to create space and work the ball down the court and into goals was particularly evident in the third quarter. Well done to Sophie Upton who made multiple intercepts and showed great determination to get the ball. Charlie Edwards also had a great game with many intercepts and making strong leads for the ball. – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 8D – Saints 3 defeated by Concordia 24
The team sadly had another loss against a very strong Concordia team. We had a quiet first half, however, got much more involved in the game for the second half which is when we scored our goals and kept their score down to 5 per quarter. Although the girls had a tough game, I am constantly impressed with how they band together and always encourage each other to keep trying. There were some very impressive intercepts from our defence end, and the game has given us some things to work on at training. – Gina Barker (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 34 defeated Concordia 31
In the first quarter, we were really good at moving the ball around in our goal circle. We also did well to pass the ball down the court. In the second quarter, we started playing more effectively. By half-time, the score was pretty close and everyone was fired up and determined to win. The third quarter was probably one of our best quarters as everyone was really pumped up and excited. At the end of the third, the score was again tight and everyone knew that our fourth quarter had to be our best. It was, and everyone worked really well as a team. We improved so much from our first to fourth quarter. Go Saints!  Nellie Ion

Year 7B – Saints 11 defeated by Concordia 42
Saints had to work hard against Concordia in the third game of the season. It started with both teams evenly matched, but that didn’t last for long. We struggled for the first two quarters as Concordia started to run away with the game. The opposition had a height advantage in many positions and Saints weren’t passing very well so Concordia capitalised. But after the half-time break, we came into the third quarter ready to play better and we really came back. Our shooters took every chance they could to score and we were extremely strong in defence. – Emily Ketteridge

Year 4 Blue – Saints 3 defeated by Seymour Blue 6
Saints played well with a good effort in goals by Emily L, Aarcha Rakesh and Caitlyn Sam-Ling. Our defenders Aoife Carty, Matilda Birmingham, Meg Paul and Leila Buttignol were all strong, and mid-court Victoria Zou and Evie Murphy put in a great effort. Well done. – Karen Braund (Proud Coach)

Year 4 White – Saints 11 defeated Seymour Green 3
What a match! Saints played their best game yet for this season, coming away with an 8-goal victory. From the get-go, all girls were determined for a win. They put 100% effort into the game in both defence and attack. From GK all the way down to GS, all players made sure they were leading into space and were positioning themselves in front of their opponents in order to bring the ball down the court and score. A huge improvement from all players and I am very excited to see what the rest of the season brings. Great game girls! – Sivani Sivasuthan (Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 3 defeated Wilderness Orange 1
Another wonderful match by our Year 3 Saints’ netballers. It is a joy to continue watching them improve so rapidly. Charlotte played a brilliant game, chasing loose balls and making space in attack with ease. Our Captain this game, Sophia Curry also played very well, shooting 2 of our 3 goals. Congratulations again girls! – Rebecca Scott-Toms (Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 1 drew with Pulteney 1
The Open As played a great game against Pulteney Grammar, resulting in a 1 – 1 draw. Our goal was scored by Annie Bradshaw from a cross delivered by Chi Chi Zhao. Annie also played a great half as goalkeeper, along with Emily Downie who also stepped up. We had quite a few shots on goal from Ashley Piper and Anushka Rajbhoj as a result of skilfully-played through-balls from our midfielders Lucy Benn and Lysiane Franchi. Of course, I have to give credit to our defenders, especially Adele Russell and Tahlia Louca, who never stopped fighting for the ball and made some excellent tackles. We tried out a new game strategy, which I was very pleased with and look forward to continuing honing our skills. – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness 6
This seemed like an evenly-matched game throughout, but unfortunately, we didn’t make any chances on goal as we were defending hard which led to lapses and the other team scoring goals. Our possession style of soccer wasn’t as evident in contrast to past games, along with the aggression and hunger to hit the score board and potentially win. Back to the drawing board with lots to work and focus on so that we can play a better second half of the season with four games remaining. – TJ Scarsgill (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 3 defeated by Concordia 6
Unfortunately, we had a very slow start – we conceded 5 goals in the first 15 minutes. The girls put in a great effort to come back from 5-0 and score 3 goals, but then conceded another one right at the end. Missed a few opportunities where we took too long to shoot. We could also work on holding our shape. Goal scorers were Januri Wagaarachchi (2) and Lilly Maerschel (1). – Ange Gouvielos (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 0 drew with Seymour 0
A very close game that resulted in a 0-0 draw. The girls did really well clearing it out of defence, and some great running from Lucy, Stella and Soph almost led to a goal. Matilda, Ella and Lydia were crucial in defence, and Jackie didn’t stop running the whole game! On to our next game with some passing and shooting drills organised for training!  Nathan Reade (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 5 defeated Seymour 3
The girls played an impressive match given the harsh, wet conditions. They were skilful in controlling the play, leading in front in scores the whole match, resulting in a great win. Scoring our first 2 goals, Alyssa Piantedosi was strong up front in attack, with Lucy Lowry and Eliza Brill Reed backing her up and Lucy later scoring two goals. Alison Francis played well in the midfield, scoring 1 goal. Stella Spalvins played a strong game, stopping the opposition from scoring goals, while Lucy Shigeno made some excellent passes. Ellie and I are very proud of the girls’ performance and can’t wait to see their progress continuing through the season. Mary Stavrou (Student Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 1 drew with Loreto 1
The girls had a great game and played very well even though it was cold and rainy. Everyone kept going and played their hardest for a great result. All the girls had a go at playing in each position and tried hard in each one. Well done to our two goalies Grace Marsh-Smith and Grace Mayen, and Izzy Huf who scored a great goal. – Lucy Benn (Student Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints 9 defeated Walford 0
The winter sky, dark and threatening, was the topic of discussion before the game began. However, the 3-4 soccer team was ready to build on their successful start to the season and notch up another win on the board. The sky grew darker and looked vengeful, and the girls played in a similar fashion. Then came the deluge, saturating and relentless. As the parents reached for their umbrellas, the children on the sidelines remained huddled under cover and the players on the field were sodden but enjoyed their time on the pitch. The Year 4 players in their second season enforced the swift game plan and were quick to offer on-field leadership, putting old rules into place. Lauren Disney scored a hasty 4 goals and Beatrice Tolley slotted through 2 more before taking the role as second half goalkeeper. The second half was just as entertaining as the first, with Lois Burton-Howard coming out of her role as goalkeeper and taking on a striking position. Anisha Pahuja and Mathilda Begg continued their improvement, setting up a number of goals and accumulating many possessions. Emily Robinson, with exceptional foot skills, asserted herself as a young leader. Lois added another goal to our already impressive tally before Emily scored 2 more. The defensive unit, led by our Captain Sophie Wiggins and newcomer Ruby Pahuja, was incredibly tight. The community feel was noted by several onlookers, with the girls enthusiastic to include their new teammates in a passing game that was very inclusive. Congratulations to everyone who braved the rain and really enjoyed themselves. – Mark Routley (Coach)

eNews – Week 3, Term 3 2020

Issue no. 23Enews-banner

From Our Director of Early Learning

Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Including sustainable practice in our ELC Strategic Direction was vital to ensure we remain committed to embedding this in everyday life. With a focus on waste, garden-to-plate and resourcefulness, we are continually building our sustainable practices within our learning context. These areas assist children to develop both an ethical and ecological understanding of their world.

Kate-ProfileEarly in 2020, we identified that we needed a unified Centre approach to waste, so we brought in an expert. Charlie Aykroyd, General Manager of Australia Green Clean and a St Peter’s Girls’ Old Scholar, has become an ongoing resource for us, working alongside staff and children. We have been empowered with a deeper understanding about the ‘why’ and have implemented sustainable practices into our daily rituals. Some of these include gathering organic waste, recycling using our bin system, and taking responsibility around the use of plastics.

In Charlie’s recent work with us, she was able to provide us with feedback on our progress. Charlie can see that the children have become change agents both at home and in the ELC. She sees it as a priority to work with this generation of children and states the importance of empowering them beyond their life at ELC. She quite rightly believes that if we don’t take action now, our world will not be any different in the years to come. Working in partnerships with businesses has mutual benefits and is key in all areas of learning from ELC to Year 12.

In addition, Charlie was very impressed with our ELC Community Garden, observing how we are utilising our own developed worm farm and compost. The children can articulate the processes involved in growing our own food, from preparing the soil and planting, to harvesting and using the produce in recipes. Our recent cooking of broccoli pasta made from scratch is an example of the type of experiences shared between educators and children.

To determine our progress, we have been reflecting on how far we have come since the beginning of the year. We are now successfully composting, recycling and utilising a unified bin system across the Centre. The children are the driving force behind our garden-to-plate experiences as they lead us with genuine interest in the garden and specific questions about seasonal produce.

Most importantly though, we can see that the children are now so mindful about what they use, thoughtful in their lunch packaging and organics bin, and resourceful in their use of materials. Families are engaged in our dialogue and continually tell us about the impacts of this learning on their home life.

The connection and respect our children and staff have with our Earth is further enhanced through our Kaurna connections to culture. We are on a journey far beyond occasional or isolated learning experiences; rather, we are developing a way of life that will empower our youngest citizens. Our advocacy in this area is something to be proud of and will continue to drive us into the future.

Director of Early Learning

Last Chance to Charm

W3 - Charm

The Year 12 Drama and Year 11 IB Theatre students are preparing for the final performance of their production Charm. Written and directed by Head of English Michael Butler-Wills, this production has been the culmination of an incredible amount of work by staff, students and volunteers. The final performance is tonight at 7pm. For an evening of fun entertainment, come along and support The Arts at Saints Girls.

Go to www.trybooking.com/BJZQC
Adult $10
Student/Concession $5

High Note for Our Music Tutors

W3 - Music 2
Congratulations to two Saints Girls’ Music tutors who will be presented with prestigious awards from the Association of Heads of Music in Non Government Schools (AHOMINGS) at a ceremony later this month.

Karen Fletcher, our resident flute tutor, will be presented with an AHOMINGS Don Burrows award for Recognition of Long Service for Music Tutors. Karen has been the dedicated flute teacher at Saints Girls for the past 30 years. She is a highly-respected member of our instrumental music team who continues to produce outstanding musicians with her no fuss, caring and passionate approach.

Trumpet tutor Warren Heading will receive an AHOMINGS Bob Hower Award for Exemplary Contribution of Music Tutors in Independent Schools. Warren has been the brass tutor at St Peter’s Girls for 16 years. During that time, he has supported the introduction and development of the Jazz Band program. He conducted the inaugural Saints Girls’ Stage Band at Generations in Jazz in the early 2000s and currently runs the School’s Little Big Band. Our annual Carols in the Cathedral always concludes with Warren performing the obligato line to ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’, a tradition we hope to continue for many years to come.

These awards recognise Karen and Warren’s consistent, passionate and far-reaching influence on generations of musicians in non-government schools in South Australia.

Old Scholars in the Spotlight

W3 - Old Scholar

I graduated from Saints in 2011 and have had the most amazing nine years since leaving school! I went straight into a Bachelor of Health Science at Adelaide University and graduated with Honours in Exercise Science and Physiology.

I am currently the Sports Scientist and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the women’s team at Adelaide United. My job allows me to travel around Australia with the squad and manage all things high performance related. Given the part-time nature of women’s sport, I also work at Adelaide University with athletic clientele, and manage the conditioning and GPS data analysis for their soccer club’s women’s team. With my newfound coaching platform and exposure to professional sport, I am frequently in schools or athletic organisations educating females and staff on the importance of the menstrual cycle and its role in athletic performance. It’s a topic I’m hugely passionate about and I hope to remove the stigma associated with it.

I have also progressed my coaching career which was initially sparked by coaching opportunities at Saints. In late 2019, I became the fourth female in SA to begin the Australia/Asia Confederation B Licence Accreditation. With this, I have been fortunate to coach the Football South Australia Regional Girls’ teams at tournaments in Singapore and Fiji.

In my personal life, I spend every spare moment I can travelling and immersing myself in different cultures and, of course, women’s sport. I went to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games to support Old Scholar Olympia Aldersey (Kennion 2011), the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France to watch the Matildas play, and I hope to get to Ireland in 2022 to compete in the Gaelic Football World Games. In my first few years as an Old Scholar, I enjoyed playing for the Old Scholars’ soccer team with many of my old school mates. After three wonderful seasons, I eventually switched clubs to represent Adelaide University.

I have fond memories of my time at Saints. I was very active within the School sports programs, but something I miss dearly is the involvement in the Music Department. I look back and treasure the experiences we were given such as the Generations in Jazz trip initially driven by Mr Heading and Mrs Noble.

As for advice for the current seniors, I’d encourage you to take time to remember that the rest of your life doesn’t have to be decided from now. You will find your place. For some it’ll come straight away, and for others, many years down the track. There’s no rush. Treasure your time at such a beautiful School and always look to give back to the School community where possible.

The future? Who knows? I’d secretly love to see an Old Scholars’ AFL team evolve! But for now, I’m looking forward to where my career will take me and, in particular, hope to have a significant role and travel around Australia and New Zealand for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Every. Single. Day.

Donate to a women’s charity that makes a real, on-the-ground difference to homeless women and victims of domestic violence. Share the Dignity collects thousands of personal hygiene products every year for women experiencing homelessness and poverty. Small dignities make a big difference.

As an extra incentive, there will be a prize for the most successful Home Group. When dropping off your donation, please write your Home Group on a post-it note and attach to the jar/s.

This is a School-wide initiative, and all Houses and families are invited to support this worthy cause.

It’s Not Magic – It’s Science!

W3 - Year 3

This week, Mrs Mitchell and Mr Routley welcomed the Year 3 girls to St Peter’s Girls’ School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with a day of potions (chemistry). This is part of their inquiry into ‘How the World Works’ and the fundamental skills of Science. We learnt about how the world is made up of atoms which have different properties and can create amazing chemical reactions when combined in different ways. We made fizzing concoctions, repelling rainbows, gooey oobleck and even saw atoms move in front of our eyes!

The study of chemistry has its roots in alchemy – a science of the medieval ages in which they believed they could convert base metals (such as lead) into gold. They also believed in the philosopher’s stone which would provide the owner with eternal life and healing powers. With these connections reminding us of the famous world of Harry Potter, it only seemed fitting to transform the School and learn that chemistry isn’t magic – it’s science!

Please also refrain from turning right into or out of the car park as this causes further congestion.

As a School, we must set an example for our students in showing courtesy to all; in this case, other road users.

Thank you for your cooperation.

CLOTHES SHWOP: We Need Your Help!

W5 - Clothes Shwop

Did you know that Australians are the world’s second largest consumers of fashion? On average, we each consume 27kgs of new clothing and textiles every year. Most of this ends up in the bin after less than a year. Members of the School’s Environment Club would like to change this!

The Environment Club is focusing on sustainable fashion with our ‘Clothes Shwop’, where students can donate old clothes for tokens, and cash-in these tokens to take new clothes in return! If you have old clothes you don’t want anymore and are happy to donate or exchange for other items, then please support this worthy cause. Any remaining items will be donated to a women’s charity.

Collections will take place outside of the Junior School Library at lunch every Tuesday and Thursday leading up to the actual ‘Clothes Shwop’ where you will be able to choose pieces from the donated clothing. The first ‘Clothes Shwop’ will be held on Thursday and Friday in Week 5 of Term 3 in the Drama Room.

Bring in your old clothes, help the environment and make your wardrobe that bit more exciting!

AUSSIE RULES

Open – Saints 1.1.7 defeated by Wilderness 9.6.60
Although the score did not go in our favour, the girls did play a great game of footy. Our training skills have developed and were reflected on the field with our good team structure and spirit. We read the ball well and communicated with our teammates. Special mention must go to Joss Forster who adapted in her role as ruck and Lily-Rose Spartalis who displayed some great marks and kicks. Despite the score, the girls worked really hard and never stopped fighting. We hope to improve even more and further showcase our skills. Great job girls, keep up the great work! – Bella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 2.4.16 defeated by Wilderness 4.1.25
Saints had a slow start to the game against Wilderness, who were a very strong opponent. We showed strong defensive pressure and a continuous drive to tackle when required. Unfortunately, it meant that we were often second to the ball and this made life difficult in the first three quarters. We definitely improved towards the end with our communication, leading for the ball and staying in front of our players. This paid off as we fought back in the last quarter with goals scored by Annie Bui and Charlotte McAuliffe. Everyone worked hard and we look forward to improving for the season ahead. Annie Warrick and Sophie Ricciuto showed the way by playing in front of their opponents and reading the play delightfully, whilst Chloe Porter was her dominant best with excellent taps in ruck. – Ellie Humphrey

BADMINTON

Congratulations to all who played on the weekend – we had another successful round. Our As, Bs, Cs, Ds, E2s and E3s all defeated their opponents. It was great to see us continue to do well against our strong opponents. It was evident that the girls were thinking strategically on the court. They should be proud of all the hard work they have put into their training and games. Let’s keep up our winning streak! – Amelie Dunda (Captain)

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 4 defeated by Seymour Blue 48
I was very proud of the way the girls didn’t give up! They kept trying their best through the whole game. Iszabella Lochowiak and Kiera See in particular had great games; they are taking on a lot of feedback from us and improving their defence and overall confidence in the game. It is great to see all of the girls grow in confidence, despite the score line, and try to dribble a little more and have some shots themselves. Keep working hard girls! – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 18 defeated by Seymour 62
Unfortunately, the girls had another tough game. They played hard the whole time despite only having 5 players, and showed lots of improvement from their first game. They played well in defence and contested all the rebounds. In attack, the girls played well, passing the ball around, resulting in them scoring their first goals of the year. – Sarah Matheson (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 26 defeated Seymour Blue 3
The girls had an excellent first win against Seymour Blue. For some, it was their first time playing basketball, and it was great to see them enjoying themselves and having fun. Our defensive pressure proved too strong, keeping Seymour to only 3 points for the entire game. All the girls contributed and worked as a team, with an exceptional effort from Wei Ning who top-scored with 12 points.  Katherine Perkas (Coach)

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross Country State Championships for Little Athletics
Daisy Braithwaite competed in the U14 competition over 3km claiming Gold, while sister Alice finished 5th, and Malaika McLeod won Gold in the U13 age group.

For the second round of the Schools’ Cross Country, the team remained focused and confident and raced extremely well, claiming the top 5 places in the Year 7 – 9 division. Well done to all team members. – Daisy Braithwaite (Year 8)

HOCKEY

Open – Saints 3 defeated Immanuel 0
The girls carried through their energy and competitive spirit from Round 1 into this game. Connections between our defence, midfield and striker lines contributed to our main goal of earning an outcome in the circle in the first five minutes of every quarter. Constant pressure was applied by our defenders, in particular Charlotte Creek and Georgie Keough, resulting in numerous turnovers and counter attacks up the field. Well done to Bridgette Leach for scoring 2 goals and Belle Black for scoring the other. – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 17 defeated St Aloysius 5
The girls came out strongly for their second game back. The attackers played incredibly well, creating fast breaks from the centre and many shooting opportunities. From the first whistle, constant pressure was placed on the opposition by our defenders, which allowed us to make intercepts, resulting in many turnovers. Alannah Godfrey, Jamie Gower and Zoe Pool did a great job in midfield, constantly winning the draw and gaining procession of the ball. This was a great team game and the score shows how strong the girls can be when they work together – Millie Wilkin (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 11  Saints Blue 6 drew with Saints White 6
The game was a display of friendly competition, with all team members striving to play their best. The cohesiveness, positivity and team spirit was outstanding, and it is fantastic to see the girls develop a sense of passion for the game, as they eagerly anticipated their next opportunity to be on the field. They successfully made many passes to teammates, used their speed to run quickly to the other side of the field and, most notably, won many competitive ground balls. An outstanding game from all Saints Blue team members, particularly Sophia Curry, Chelsea Francis, Hayley Lucas and Amelia Lively. Well done to all; the even result demonstrates that both teams have similar abilities and worked just as hard as each other. – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

All of the girls were very keen to play against each other. Our attack has improved greatly, with the girls spreading out more which made it easier to dodge around defenders. This was done particularly well by Lois Burton-Howard (Year 4), Ruby Kelly (Year 4) and Lily Silvani. Many of the girls also did a great job at attacking the goal hard such as Lola Silvani. It was great to see the girls never giving up on ground balls; Neela (Year 4) and Anika Singh (Year 4) both showed great determination doing this. Once again, our defence improved further with the girls grasping the concept of sticking to a player, notably Grace Marshall (Year 3) and Scarlett Schinella (Year 3). Our fantastic goalies were Matilda Begg (Year 3) and Willow Chong (Year 3). It was a great game to watch. Goal scorers were Lois (2), Ruby (1), Lily (2) and Lola (1) – Lucy Martin (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 34 defeated by Wilderness 42
The girls played an outstanding game against Wilderness which unfortunately resulted in a loss. From the start, each player applied full court pressure to create many opportunities for turnovers. Additionally, the girls did a great job in attack. In particular, Anna White and Amelia Pudney drove down the court and accurately worked the ball into the circle. The team adapted very well when Ehi Oyugbo, who was playing her best game, unfortunately came down with an ankle injury. As a result, Olivia Kelly was re-positioned in GK and Sarah Wishart moved to WD. Both Liv and Sarah made many touches and prevented their player from driving down the court. Best on court went to Hannah Freeman, Maggie Bailey and Alexia Politis. Maggie set herself up on her opponent which allowed her to create space in the goal circle and shoot. Lex stayed strong on her opponent and created space to drive the ball down the court with intent. It was a hard-fought match in which the girls stood their ground against the strong opposition. The game builds enthusiasm to see what we can bring to the future games. Well done girls! – Hannah Freeman (Captain)

Open B – Saints 42 defeated Wilderness 33
The Open Bs had a good game against Wilderness with a strong four quarters. Our shooters moved well in the circle, with Sadie and Thalia feeding the ball well to them. Ruby had a great game at GD, maintaining pressure on her player throughout. Everyone worked well as a team to drive the ball down the court. Although we were unable to have spectators at Wilderness, the girls were happy to get their first win. – Gemma Schaedel

Open E1 – Saints 28 defeated Wildernesses 22
A great win for the girls! Down by 2 goals at three-quarter time, the girls had a strong last quarter to come home with a win by 6 goals. Best players were Clair Kao for her exceptional work in the goal ring and Bella Bernadi for her performance in the mid-court, especially defensively in the last quarter, making a number of turn overs to help secure the win. – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Open E2 – Saints 9 defeated by Pembroke 26
A tough competition but the girls should be very proud of how they played, with clear improvements already being made from last week! Best players were Hannah Keough whose great defensive skills helped keep Pembroke’s goal scoring down on a number of occasions, and Lara Wakeham for her continuous support all over the court. Well done girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Year 10A – Saints 28 defeated Wilderness 18
This was a really good win for the girls. Defensive pressure was on during the whole game and created a lot of turnovers. The transition into attack improved significantly after the first game, and it was good to see that the girls were recognising the space on the court and which channels they must run in to transition the ball correctly. One area of improvement is to recognise floating defenders and ensuring that we pass the ball into space in order to avoid intercepts, whilst also running onto the ball and taking the extra step across to ensure the defender is screened. We are really impressed with the improvement within the squad.  Milli Gentle (Coach)

Year 10B – Saints 30 defeated Wilderness 9
The girls had a good game and were able to adapt with all sorts of changes that were thrown at them. Facing a physical opposition, they were able to adapt and hold strong throughout. The score does not reflect how the game was played, with significant improvement in defence, understanding defensive positioning to ensure defenders stay in play. The attacking end needs further improvement surrounding movement, however, this increased when rotations were made. We are impressed with the girls’ willingness to learn and have great confidence that they will all continue to develop as the season progresses. – Katie Dancer (Coach)

Year 10C – Saints 4 defeated by Seymour 36
Tough game for the girls but they fought hard for all four quarters. Defence worked great in creating a lot of pressure and therefore plenty of turnovers; now we just need to work on capitalising on those turnovers and converting them into goals. – Elena Vaananen (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 48 defeated Wilderness 26
This was another well-rounded performance by all the girls. It was good to see an improvement in our defence and sideline throw-ins which we had worked on at training. Keep up the amazing work team. – Della Griffith (Coach)

Year 9B – Saints 49 defeated Wilderness 22
A very good game by all. The transition from defence into attack improved a lot which provided many scoring opportunities. At training, we plan to focus on understanding the set plays better, and also slowing down the play at certain times during the game. – Natasha Dinan (Coach)

Year 9C – Saints 20 defeated by Pulteney 22
Another fantastic game for the team. It was very close and the girls should be proud of their efforts. Those who stood out were Lucy Schirripa and Bel Burmester for their commitment to defending their players. This was another impressive game; well done girls! – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 44 defeated Wilderness 19
This was an amazing game. Our attack was able to do both attacking and defending as they made many intercepts. Charlie Piper and Soph Ryan shot incredible goals. Lili Bennett and Airlie McCabe were able to communicate on the court while demonstrating strong leads. Good job girls! – Gloria Zou

Year 8B – Saints 22 defeated Wilderness 13
The girls started off very well, with everyone talking and encouraging each other. Even though some of the opposition were physical, the girls pulled through with a win and some outstanding plays. The first half was strong, with consistent goals and great calling for the ball. In the second half, the girls really picked up their defending skills. There were marvellous plays from Charlotte Norman and Olivia Oakes in the goal circle and goal third. Although some girls were a little tired in the last part of the game, it was a top team effort and a challenging match.  Zoe Duncan (Coach)

Year 8C – Saints 31 defeated Pulteney 6
The girls showed improvement in the way they cohesively worked the ball down the court. Our defensive play was strong, particularly in the last quarter where Pulteney failed to score a goal whilst Saints scored 9. All girls applied pressure, displaying enthusiasm and great teamwork for the duration of the game. Well played girls! Special thanks to Alysa for playing up with us this match. – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 8D – Saints 10 defeated by Pembroke 16
The team had a cracking game! Alysa Trinh kindly volunteered to fill in, so we had 8 for the match. Although the girls were a few goals down in the first quarter, they managed to fight to prevent the gap from expanding and keep Pembroke’s score quite low. There were big improvements from the first game, and I was very impressed with how the girls were encouraging each other to keep going. – Gina Barker (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 47 defeated Wilderness 11
The team played a fantastic game against Wilderness, leading in all quarters. Every player defended hard, made good clear leads and passed well. Defenders were quick on their feet and made it difficult for the opposition to score. In the mid-court, players passed well into the goal circle and helped by re-offering if needed. The shooters hardly missed a shot and moved well around the circle. The team played a brilliant game and it was good to see that we were putting things we practised at training into play. Well done girls.  Anna Venning

Year 7B – Saints 22 defeated Wilderness 15
The teams were neck-and-neck in the first quarter, but during the second and third, Saints played our best game to increase the lead. In the last quarter, we stayed strong with our defence improving throughout the game to help set up the win. – Charlotte Lorenzen

Year 4 Blue – Saints 3 defeated by Pembroke 11
The girls tried really hard but Pembroke were too strong. Our girls in defence, Aoife Carty, Caitlyn Sam-Ling and Evie Murphy, played a great game but Pembroke were very accurate with their shooting. Our last quarter was a standout, outscoring Pembroke. Well down girls, keep up the good work. – Karen Braund (Proud Coach)

Year 4 White – Saints 4 defeated by Seymour 5
The girls demonstrated great team effort and perseverance. Saints were patient in bringing the ball out of defence and working in our goal third to get to circle edge. They worked harder on their one-on-one defence and making sure they were passing to the first free player they saw when in attack. Saints showed outstanding effort and they should be extremely proud of their development.  Sivani Sivasuthan (Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 12 defeated Pembroke Yellow 3
It was so exciting to watch our girls have a big win. All played brilliantly, with our defenders sticking tight to their players and getting countless intercepts. Our shooters had a great afternoon as well, moving fluidly and having a much better awareness of each other on the court. Special mention to Victoria Hii for her superb defence and Anisha Pahuja for her tireless shooting throughout the match. – Rebecca Scott-Toms (Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour 2
The team and I really enjoyed playing our first home game this season. Adele Russell, Emily Downie and Annie Bradshaw all produced some very strong tackles against the opposition and never failed to go back for a second effort. Our brilliant goalkeepers, Emily McCorley and Azaan Singh, displayed some very impressive confidence. Our goal was scored from a well-placed corner ball delivered by Lucy Benn and finished with a header from Ashley Piper. Despite the loss, the girls finished on a positive note having scored our first goal of the season and winning the second half. We’re all very keen to continue improving our skills in the coming weeks! – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 1 defeated by Mercedes 6
For the third game of the season, it was a good start, going hard for the ball and making chances to shoot. Unfortunately, some lapses and in defence cost us 3 goals in the first half. For the second half, the girls came out strongly again, with a footy kick from our GK Sara Peak, which then assisted Imogen Parkinson who ran through the opposition’s defence and shot it past the keeper to score our first goal of the season. With our spirits lifted and fighting for a comeback, the opposition managed to get a few more goals due to lapses once again for us. Even though we ended up losing, the score didn’t reflect the game that was played. Our possession style of soccer was evident, along with our aggression for the ball and hard running. The girls threaded many passes together and worked the ball up the field, but unfortunately, it didn’t result in more goals which would have been well-deserved. Many positives to take away and a few things to focus on so that we are consistent all through the game. Let’s hope for more goals next time, and keep up the fighting spirit as we are getting better and better each week. – TJ Scarsgill (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 3 defeated Woodcroft 0
We played our best game so far, keeping our shape and providing passing options and targets up front. We could improve finishing as we could’ve had a lot more goals given we had plenty of chances. Januri got hit in the face with the ball in the last 10 minutes of the match, so I took her off and she stayed off for the rest of the match, though she kept wanting to go back on. Goals: Januri (2) and Georgia Evans (1) – Ange Gouvielos (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness 2
Tough game for the girls against a strong Wilderness team. Our defence and midfield did really well to keep them at bay for as long as we could, with great tackling and clearing from Lucy, Monika, Asha and Alicia. Jackie did well in goals and both Lidia and Ella were great out wide. Next week girls!  Nathan Reade (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 1 defeated by Loreto Gold 3
The team played a competitive game. Alyssa Piantadosi and Stella Spalvins did a great job as our goalkeepers, blocking some crucial shots. Lucy Lowry was excellent in midfield, skilfully dribbling past the Loreto players and scoring our only goal! Special mention also has to go to Jiahui Zhang and Lucy Shigeno for kicking some great long balls out of defence. The other coach, Mary Stavrou, and I were very pleased with how the girls played in their first game, and we’re keen to get back out there and continue developing our skills. – Ellie Anderson (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 1 defeated by Wilderness Red 3
The girls played a fantastic first game, putting in a very strong defensive effort against a tough opponent. Consistent effort and persistence on the ball led to a very close game. The midfielders showed an impressive work rate, especially captain Aleiyah Abraham, helping shots on goal as well as keeping opposition goals to a minimum. Thank you to our goalkeepers Nishka Soodan and Eleni Schulze, and well done to goal scorer Izzy Huf. – Beth Cross

Year 3-4 – Saints 7 defeated Loreto 3
The sun was shining on a beautiful day as 13 keen girls laced their soccer boots for the first game of season 2020. The buzz was exciting and the game started at a frantic pace. Lauren Disney threaded through 4 first half goals and Beatrice Tolley added another to our impressive tally. Lois Burton-Howard again proved why she is such a valuable goalkeeper, thwarting many attempts by Loreto. She was well supported by experienced defenders Captain Abbie Tulloch and Valentina Patino who showed excellent composure for the second year in a row. The younger students in the squad quickly got themselves into the mix, with Mathilda Begg and Emily Robinson setting up goals for their teammates. The speed in conjunction with the selfless passing game truly impressed the Coach and spectators. Sylvie Flavel tried her hand in goals for the second half, which also saw Christina Balasis score a beautiful goal and Lauren Disney take her total to 5 for the match. – Mark Routley (Coach)
