From Our Chair and Principal

Following our meeting on Wednesday night, the Board of Governors is pleased to advise that St Peter’s Girls’ School will be proceeding with our plans to build a new Gym, with works due to begin as originally scheduled in November next year. Featuring two indoor courts, an elevated viewing platform and revamped weights area, our new Gym will be a jewel in our sporting crown, lifting girls and women in sport to new heights.

We dearly thank all of you who have donated to our extensive fundraising campaign to date. As a result of your generosity, we were able to raise approximately $600,000, enabling the continuation of early critical preliminary works. We also applaud our girls for their inspirational sporting and physical efforts in their overwhelmingly successful push to ‘Move a Million Metres’ earlier this year. Whilst we had contemplated commencing works even sooner, budget expense projections have increased sharply due to external factors such as supply chain disruption and soaring building and labour costs, in an unprecedented period of global volatility during COVID-affected times. Notwithstanding these challenges, we are fiercely committed to providing our girls with a first-class Gym of which we can all be proud. Your contributions, financial or otherwise, are immensely valued and have supported us to maintain momentum with this significant development.

Behind the scenes, the Board of Governors, members of the Senior Leadership Team and other passionate staff have spent years developing the project, with exhaustive preliminary works already completed. This means that once we are shovel-ready, we will be able to hit the ground running. With an estimated construction timeframe of 12 months, the completion of our new Gym will be a most fitting crescendo to the School’s 130th Anniversary. We look forward to celebrating these remarkable milestones with our wonderful community, honouring the past and opening a new chapter at Saints Girls.

From Our Deputy Principal / Head of Middle School

Adelaide SchoolsWe always expect Term 4 to be a busy time as we celebrate both the end of the year and the festive season. However, Term 3 is also proving an excellent opportunity to reconnect with the Saints Girls’ community in a host of different arenas.

Last week, I enjoyed catching up with parents at the Intercol Australian Rules matches at Payneham, and at the Intercol Netball at school on Saturday morning, whilst Year 12 parents have enjoyed being guests at the four House Dinners we’ve had this term. Yesterday, there was a healthy, appreciative and vocal audience at the Year 9 Arts Collab Night, entertained in fine style by our students who were clearly having a terrific time showcasing their work to such a warm and welcoming crowd.

It would be wonderful to see as many of you as possible tomorrow morning at school for Winter Interhouse. Always a colourful and well-supported event, feel free to don your House colours, dress up the dog, and head in for a barista coffee and BBQ breakfast. Events start at 8am.

Next week sees talented Arts students centre stage for the SACE Dance Performance. These are always productions of the highest calibre, and deserving of a positive and supportive audience. It’s an excellent opportunity for students in Junior and Middle School, and their parents, to witness what the outcome of curriculum Dance here at Saints looks like. Watching a full program will help to form a fuller understanding of not only the complexity and deep thinking behind each piece, but also the joy and sense of achievement that our girls gain through the program. Senior students also love to come and support their peers, so please encourage them to attend, and consider staying yourself.

Of course, next Friday is our annual Years 4 to 12 Sports Day! Greater detail is provided further below. This vibrant event provides another excellent opportunity to see live entertainment, support the girls and continue to build your links within the community.

Whatever it is you choose to attend over the next week, I know the girls will thrive on and appreciate your support, and I look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible.

Deputy Principal/Head of Middle School

From Our Sport Prefect

Our Intercol against Walford last week celebrated the end to another successful Winter Sport season. Congratulations to everyone who participated in games, as this led to us defending the Netball, Badminton and Aussie Rules Shields. In Soccer, the girls were able to win the annual match for the first time since 2018, finishing with an exciting penalty shoot-out after a 1 – 1 draw.

We commend the Hockey girls’ efforts as they fought hard in a 2 – 2 draw, unfortunately meaning Walford keeps that shield for another year. However, these girls were triumphant in the coveted Saints Girls vs Trinity College Hockey Cup, winning  4 -1. Congratulations to the team, especially to goal scorers Bridgette Leach and Amelia Lucas.

It’s currently Winter Interhouse, and after a decade-long drought in Soccer, Kilburn struck gold on Wednesday by claiming the title. Today is Aussie Rules, while tomorrow morning is Netball and Badminton Interhouse. And of course, next Friday is Sports Day! Good luck to all the Houses. Finally, throughout lunchtimes in Week 8, the staff will be taking on the Open A teams in our much-loved Staff vs Student matches. Teams will compete in Netball, Soccer, Touch Football, Volleyball and Lacrosse, and the winner of the majority of games will receive the first-ever Staff vs Student Shield. Thank you to the staff who have put their hands up to play in these games!

I hope everyone is excited for the upcoming Summer Sport season, with trainings commencing in Week 9. Best wishes to all involved, particularly the Year 12s as this will be their final opportunity as students to wear the School colours in the sporting arena.

The day will begin at 8.30am and will conclude by approximately 3.15pm. Parents are able to attend. Please note that shelter and seating are limited; however, you are welcome to bring your own chairs.

Travel Arrangements

Students who usually travel on School buses will be transported directly to and from the venue, departing from and returning to their regular stops. School Bus Drivers will inform families of any expected changes to pick-up and drop-off times.

Esperanza Strike at Chamber Music Competition

Last weekend, Esperanza set off for Melbourne to perform in the ‘Strike A Chord’ Musica Viva National Chamber Music championship. It was a great honour to be included as Grand Finalists in this prestigious competition, as we were the only school from South Australia, as well as the only choir to be selected nation-wide. Thus, you can imagine how ecstatic we were when the compere announced us as 3rd prize, winning $2500 for the School!

We knew the competition would be tough, but never expected the extraordinary concert that unfolded before us. Esperanza found themselves amongst child prodigies, many of whom had been learning since 3 or 4 years of age. Regardless, the girls took to the stage in the beautiful Melbourne Recital Centre with confidence and poise. The ensembles performing at this concert displayed true virtuosity, and as a result, we certainly did not expect to place.

A special shout out to Samantha Keough who sang a high sustained C# into our key change, an incredible feat in itself. We heard via the grapevine that the first thing the adjudicators discussed when they went to pontificate was this incredible high note.

Congratulations Esperanza, we are incredibly proud of you all.

ELC Fathers and Friends’ Breakfast

On Wednesday morning at the ELC, we celebrated the inspirational people in the children’s lives including fathers, grandfathers and uncles at our Fathers and Special Friends’ Breakfast.

Thank you to everyone who attended. The children cherish any opportunity to share their treasured ELC spaces, and it’s always so wonderful to connect with our community.

Early Learners Embrace Physical Challenge

At our ELC, we offer children a range of specialist lessons to challenge and refine gross motor skills such as walking, running and climbing.

We promote a lifelong healthy mindset, encouraging physical literacy and a love of natural and outdoor environments such as neighbouring Ferguson Park. This in turn boosts children’s confidence, self-esteem, their ability to assess risk in the world around them, and assists in school readiness through improved core strength.

Book Week Highlights – Chapter 2!

Our Junior School girls are still on cloud nine following Book Week 2022!

With the theme ‘Dreaming with eyes open’, our girls were proud to showcase their colourful and creative costumes to parents and peers. Here are a few more highlights from another sensational Dress Up Day Parade to celebrate our love of books!

Toy Testers Turn Back the Clock

The Year 2 Australian Museum of Childhood visit on Monday brought an array of colourful, interactive and creative toys from the past for our unit of inquiry ‘Who We Are in Place and Time’. This amazing experience enabled our inquisitive inquirers an opportunity to explore objects from the past and compare them with toys of the present day.

Students engaged in scientific wonder as they investigated toys with push and pull movements. They captured their investigations through taking photographs and time lapse movies. This is an exciting provocation to our next science unit of inquiry, ‘Motion Mission’.

Saints Girls Show Way with Words

Earlier this term, a group of Saints Girls attended the IPSHA Junior Orator Competition at Prince Alfred College, achieving outstanding results. The team was made up of Year 5 students Grace Marshall, Georgia Baghurst and Annabel Lok, along with Year 6 students Caitlyn Sam-Ling, Aarcha Rakesh, Emily Kim and Maria Prakash.

Congratulations to Maria and Georgia, who placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the final competition. Maria waxed eloquently with her speech about ‘Words’, while Georgia proclaimed, ‘The world needs more great inventors.’

Judges commented on how wonderfully our girls engaged the audience, which is the key ingredient of the Junior Orator Competition. Well done girls!

Out of the Blue Arts Journal – Enter Now

To celebrate the many talented individuals within our School community, the annual Out of the Blue Arts Journal is back on for 2022!

We are inviting all students from ELC – Year 12, Old Scholars and staff to submit their artistic creations for this year’s journal. These submissions can be made individually or collaboratively. The journal features a wide variety of art including photographs, drawings, paintings, poetry, cakes, dances, song lyrics and tapestry. If you think of anything else, feel free to email us.

For any media items such as music or dance, a still graphic of the work with a relevant QR code will be used. Any music or media must be owned by the artist or should use royalty-free music. In order to represent our whole community, your submissions can also be in any language (provided it is submitted alongside an English translation).

Our journal was a huge success last year, featuring over 175 submissions and selling over 180 copies. A celebration launch will be held in the School Chapel on Thursday 3 November.

The closing date for all entries is Friday 7 October (the first week of the school holidays). We are thankful for all entries, but due to the number of submissions that we receive, only our successful applicants will be notified. Your submissions can either be emailed to the Out of the Blue email or placed in the Out of the Blue boxes in classrooms (for Junior School students) or in the Library (for Middle and Senior School students).

The Out of the Blue Arts Journal Committee is looking forward to seeing all of your amazing pieces and celebrating the artists in our community!

Yang Yang’s Artistic Odyssey

I have taken art classes since I was 8 years old, so much of my life has revolved around art. Originally, I began these classes to fill up the weekend. However, it has become an activity with more meaning rather than just passing time. But what makes art so important?

Visual Art has been present throughout human history, from the clay paintings in limestone caves to the contemporary abstract art. Visual Art extends from paintings, sketches and sculptures to multimedia projects. It is recognised as a fundamental part of human experience. Art can reflect the environment around us and records our history in a visual form. It is a creative form of communication that can express the artist’s experience and emotions, which cannot be achieved through other means.

I enjoy art not only because it allows me to share my thoughts and opinions through a visual manner, but it is also an escape from study and gives me perspective on the experiences of other individuals. The freedom of expression is the main motivator that artists appreciate.

To celebrate the artists at our School, the Out of the Blue Arts Journal is an amazing opportunity. If you have a piece of art that you wish to enter, do not hesitate! Please email us via outoftheblue@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au for submissions and any queries.

High Drama for Shakespeare Students

On Thursday, our Year 7 – 10 students had the privilege of attending one of two performances by Bell Shakespeare. The troupe of three actors – Chrissie, Laurence and Ruby – travel the country performing plays that educate students about The Bard’s works.

They presented Shakespeare is Dead, a 45-minute exploration of the historical context, language, themes, style and value of Shakespeare’s plays. The second performance entitled The Human Condition examined the way in which Shakespeare’s plays capture a range of human qualities: love, delight, grief, anger, ambition, guilt, revenge, courage and mercy to name just a few!

The performances were vibrant, enthusiastic and versatile, where the actors made complex literature accessible to all students as they immersed them in the history and texts of the world’s most reputed poet/dramatist. The quirky nature of the presentation style, with an emphasis upon humour, audience involvement and a resourceful use of props, meant that the performances were appealing to all students, providing both an educational and entertaining experience.

‘The performances were very engaging and entertaining. I learnt a lot about the different types of plays Shakespeare wrote and the language and rhythms he used. The actors explained everything in terms that were easy to understand and follow.’
– Malaika McLeod (Year 9 student)

‘Bell Shakespeare presented immersive, thought-provoking performances. I learnt that whilst the language that Shakespeare used is not common in today’s society, the themes and emotions experienced by the characters are still very relatable.’
– Ashani Amarathunga (Year 9 student)

Kennion Spirit Week

This week is the fabulous Kennion’s Spirit Week. It has been fantastic to witness a sea of blue ribbons around the School. I am so proud of how well the Kennion girls have represented the House, not only this week but every day. To top off the Kennion spirit by adding more blue to the campus, the Kennion Year 12s dressed up in blue outfits today.

On Wednesday, our Spirit Week Chapel Service featured the theme of what it means to be a Kennion girl, and brought attention to the determination and perseverance of the House. Our Deputy House Captain Sivanthi Sivasuthan shared what she loves about leading Kennion and the qualities of the House which stand out in the School atmosphere. We were also fortunate to have our Junior School House Captains Millie and Ros sharing what they love about Kennion and what it means to be a Kennion girl. The very talented Emma Pool and Helen Zhang performed ‘Bad Habit’ by Ben Platt, accompanied by the amazing Annie Bui, Tammy Tang and Amy Wang. It was an amazing performance that showcased some of the wonderful talent within Kennion House.

The girls are looking forward to our annual House Dinner tonight as an opportunity to celebrate being in this fantastic House and the year we have had so far. The Year 11s have worked incredibly hard to organise this special event and did a great job choosing the 2000s theme. I look forward to seeing everyone dressed up and enjoying the evening.

This has been an amazing Spirit Week showcasing our House pride, and I look forward to seeing what the rest of the term holds for Kennion.

Kennion House Charity Day

The Kennion Year 10 Home Group hosted a sausage sizzle on Chiverton Lawns last Friday. We were fundraising for our House Charity, KickStart for Kids, and ended up doing so well, we sold out of sausages!

We began preparing for this fundraiser in Term 2 and have been responsible for the full event. We all had so much fun assembling this sausage sizzle and working together towards a shared goal!

KickStart for Kids provides a breakfast and lunch program for underprivileged children in South Australia. The Kennion Year 10s have been volunteering at a school in Adelaide’s north-west, helping provide breakfast for the children and preparing their lunch.

We all had so much fun running this fundraiser together and are so glad we can contribute to helping our House Charity!

Patteson House Charity Day

Last Friday, the Year 10 Patteson girls held a bake sale with a variety of sweet treats to raise money for our House Charity, the Moore St Drop-In Centre, which helps people experiencing homelessness.

Each and every girl took pleasure in serving the School community and working together as a cohort. We were very successful in selling all of our baked goods and raising over $600 for the Moore St Drop-In Centre! Thank you to everyone who contributed.

KickStart for Kids Period Poverty Drive

At Saints Girls, we know the importance of health and wellbeing and recognise that, unfortunately, not all individuals have access to the same support, services and products. As such, Community Service Prefect Emily Teague and I have decided to support KickStart for Kids’ Period Poverty drive where girls can bring sanitary products to school which will be donated to individuals who don’t have access to these essential items.

The collection bins for these products will be located in the Middle School next week. The campaign is aiming to collect over 25,000 packs of sanitary pads to donate to 2000 young South Australians to help manage their periods for 12 months.

We have been supporting KickStart for Kids for many years as one of our House Charities and see this as a great opportunity not just for the Kennion girls but our whole School to partner with this amazing organisation. As part of our School-wide Service Learning Program, we want to support this event with the greatest enthusiasm, so that ‘together, we can help end period poverty in South Australia’.

If you wish to find out more information about this event, please visit Period Poverty – KickStart for Kids

Social Entrepreneurs Support Brighter Futures

In Term 2, the Year 8 Futures students were challenged to establish and run their own social enterprise. This involved identifying a social problem and developing a product that would generate a profit to assist a charitable organisation. A group of girls – Rose Downie, Izzy Bonett, Mithi Sharma, Isobel McArthur and Eve Dillon – created heat bags in a variety of colours, patterns and sizes. Last week, Eve visited the Hutt St Centre and donated 15 heat bags which were gratefully received.

‘We really enjoyed the process and helping the cause. It felt empowering giving something to those who don’t have the same privileges as us.’ – Eve

Congratulations to all Year 8 Futures students for your creativity, hard work and interest in making a difference in our local community.

Afternoon Tea for a Cause

One of our subjects in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is CAS which stands for Creativity, Activity and Service. Part of CAS involves undertaking a project that aids the community. Our chosen project is to hold a fundraising afternoon tea where all profits raised will go to making care packages for women who are admitted to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital following a pregnancy loss.

Many women who present at the hospital for care are transferred from the country or interstate. Often the diagnosis of pregnancy loss is unexpected, and they do not have personal items with them. They may also feel very distant from their loved ones and their community.

With the profits from the afternoon tea, we will make care packages which will include personal hygiene items and small touches to help women know that they are cared for.

The afternoon tea will be held at the Glenunga Hub. The link below can be accessed to purchase event and raffle tickets or to make a donation. There will also be other fundraising opportunities on the day, so please bring some gold coins!

Venue: Glenunga Hub Community Centre, 70 Conyngham Street, Glenunga
Dates: Sunday 11 September 1.30 – 3.30pm

Ticket purchases and donations close on Monday 5 September.

Save the date and come along for a rollicking time at the Year 5 Production Pirates of Penzance JR. in Week 10! The girls have been preparing to take the audience on this adventure for the past two terms, and are excited to thrill you with singing, dancing and joyful merriment in this wonderful Gilbert and Sullivan operetta.

The performances will be held on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 September at 1.15pm and 7pm. Tickets for Year 5 parents will will be available via TryBooking from Week 6, and for the wider community from Week 7.  You can be assured of a fun time as we celebrate beautiful maidens, bumbling policemen and not-so menacing pirates!

Old Scholar Musical in Stonyfell Spotlight

Earlier this year, Old Scholar Erin McKellar (Patteson 2013) premiered her very own musical, A Box of Memories at the Adelaide Fringe. The award-winning show is now returning under the direction of international director Narelle Yeo, presented at St Peter’s Girls’ School Arts Centre.

Co-written with her father Duncan and with music composed entirely by Erin, this intimate show features an all-Adelaide line up that presents perspectives on what it means to live with dementia, from diagnosis through to the end-of-life. During a series of vignettes, it follows the story of Lizzy, a woman in her 70s, experiencing changes in memory and at the beginning of a life-impacting diagnostic experience.

The Friends of The Arts will be supporting the event selling refreshments.

Venue: St Peter’s Girls’ School Arts Centre
Dates: Sunday 18 September 7.30pm

Road Safety Alert

The School has received reports of concerning driver behaviour on Hallett Road. This includes holding up traffic while waiting for cars to leave in order to park near the ELC, performing risky u-turns and parking in bus zones.

As our staff have no jurisdiction over public roads, the School will be asking the police to conduct regular patrols at peak times.

We implore all of our community members to support road safety and show courtesy to others.

Car Park Protocols

It is important to remind families about our car park protocols, particularly during drop off and pick up.

If the car park is full and you are unable to enter, circle the block until it is clear to enter, find a park elsewhere or, where age-appropriate, meet your daughter in a surrounding street.

Please note that, unless special circumstances apply, parents of girls in Years 2 to 12 should not enter the car park to collect their daughters prior to 3.30pm. Parents of girls in Reception and Year 1 have exclusive use of the pick-up zone prior to this time for safety and traffic reasons.

Please also refrain from turning right into or out of the car park at peak times, and please do not queue in the car park’s lanes as this often prevents drivers who are legally parked from exiting.

We have also previously received complaints about cars being parked too close to or in front of driveways, or across from other vehicles in surrounding streets, making it extremely difficult for residents and other road users to navigate.

We ask all community members to please show consideration for others. Thank you for your cooperation.

COVID-19 Information

Under SA Health protocols, asymptomatic children who are close contacts can attend school or ELC, provided they undertake 5 Rapid Antigen Tests over 7 days and receive negative results.

Please also be reminded of these general requirements:

Should your child develop any symptoms, even mild ones, they must not attend school or ELC and should be tested for COVID-19. Those with symptoms who test negative using a RAT must undertake a PCR test to confirm that result.  Students who have previously tested positive and have completed isolation in the past 28 days do not need to undertake testing.

If your child tests positive to COVID-19, notify us immediately. Please also advise the type of test (RAT/PCR), the date your child’s test was taken and the date symptoms started (if no symptoms, note ‘asymptomatic’).

Please notify us via email or text:

Email: attendance@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au
Text: 0428 601 957 (save to phone contacts as SPGS)

If you need to notify us over the phone, call the Front Office on 8334 2200.

If your child is too sick to attend school, they are therefore also too sick to be working remotely from home.

Please also note that SA Health strongly recommends face masks in schools when indoors for students across Years 3 to 12. The same advice applies for all adults, including visitors, except if it impedes the ability to teach or interact with children.

AUSSIE RULES

Open A: Saints (30) v Walford (12)
Middle A: Saints (16) v Walford (6)

Last Friday, our Middle and Senior School Aussie Rules teams played our Intercol matches against Walford, winning both games to end the season on a high. The support shown by the School community was amazing, with signs, chants and even a jazzy saxophone tune from the sidelines. Everyone played amazingly and put up a great fight to retain the Intercol Shield. Some highlights in the Middle As game were the incredible courage and confidence exhibited by the girls as they fearlessly took on a physical, muddy game to turn the score around in the third quarter. Our Open A girls were also fantastic, with each and every player on the field contributing to the win.

At the end of our season, I feel incredibly proud to be part of our School Aussie Rules teams, which have become more competitive year by year, a growth driven by our wonderful coaches Ms Moxon, Mark Ricciuto, Mr Mills and Mr Searle. While Middle and Senior Aussie Rules signs off for now, we look forward to the upcoming Junior School Aussie Rules season, and many great years of Saints Girls’ footy to come! – Emily Teague (Captain)

BADMINTON

Open A: Saints (6) v Walford (0)
Open B1: Saints (2) v Wilderness (4)
Open B2: Saints (4) v Walford (2)
Open C1: Saints (6) v Walford (0)
Open C2: Saints (2) v Wilderness (4)
Open D1: Saints (4) v Walford (2)
Open D2: Saints (6) v Wilderness (0)
Middle E: Saints (6) v Pembroke (2)

This season, we welcomed many new players who participated in competitive games for the first time. It’s always amazing seeing the girls try their best against their opponents. If one word can be used to describe the Badminton girls, it would undoubtedly be ‘resilient’. We faced many challenges, including low coach numbers at the beginning of the season. However, our girls were determined and consistently attended training sessions with a positive attitude. The hard work they have put into the sport is reflected in the Intercol results.

I extend a massive thank you to Mrs Risbey and Miss Brennan for providing immense support for the Badminton community at Saints. Not only focusing on the logistics and planning behind the scenes, they also stepped up to be coaches and ran training sessions throughout the season. The program could not have begun and ended as smoothly as it did without their constant support. Our deepest gratitude also to Meng Sam-Ling who volunteered to run Thursday morning trainings; your support is greatly appreciated. Finally, I want to thank all the Badminton girls for your participation; I am so proud of everyone and I am delighted to have been your Captain for 2022! – Yang Yang Gu (Captain)

HOCKEY

Open A: Saints (2) v Walford (2)
On Friday morning, we fielded a team of 9 for the annual Intercol against Walford. A shoutout to Abbey who volunteered to play in goals for the first half and to Kiera in the second! Both girls demonstrated great persistence for their first time, saving multiple shots. It was a tough match, presenting many challenges to our team; however, the girls stood strong, maintaining a 2 – 2 draw. Well done everyone!

Open A: Saints (4) v Trinity College (1)
On Saturday, we had our annual interschool competition against Trinity College and finished with a 4 – 1 win. An incredible game by Amelia, scoring 3 goals with great speed and vision. She was also named best player by the Trinity team – congratulations! Leah played her usual fast game, turning up everywhere just as we needed her. Ayla enjoyed five times as many touches in this match as she has had for the whole season – amazing work!

To the girls, I am so proud of all your efforts and the flexibility you demonstrated throughout the entire season. Finally, a huge thank you to our Manager Sharon and to our coaches Liv and Tash for their continuous support and commitment to the team. To all girls at Saints, come out next season and give hockey a go! We are a friendly and supportive bunch who want everyone to love hockey as much as we do! – Bridgette Leach (Captain)

*Some matches for our Opens/Year 10 had to switch their opponents due to coach/umpire availability

Our Intercol Netball kicked off on Tuesday when our Open Bs took on Walford Open As. It was a tough loss for our girls, but they went down fighting and never gave up.

On Saturday morning, our remaining teams faced off against our Walford rivals. We had great support across all courts with teams coming out early or staying later to cheer on their schoolmates. We had some dominant wins and some losses; however, we were able to come out on top, winning the Netball Intercol 7 to 3.

It was a wonderful way to finish our season, with the girls showing true Saints’ spirit during all of our matches. Thank you to the parents/guardians for their support and to our amazing coaches and umpires who have worked tirelessly all season.

WINTER INTERHOUSE

Adelaide SchoolsOur first Winter Interhouse fixtures saw our Houses compete in a round robin Soccer competition on the Oval on Wednesday. In Round 1, the scores were close in both games, with Selwyn defeating Patteson 3 – 0 and Kilburn coming out on top in a close 1 – 0 victory over Kennion. In Round 2, the goals started to flow, with Kennion putting 6 past Patteson and Kilburn sneaking a 2 – 1 win against Selwyn.

So, we went into the final round with Kilburn undefeated, and Kennion needing a Patteson victory. Patteson worked hard and showed great spirit scoring their first goal of the day, but couldn’t keep out the goal-hungry Kilburn who roared to victory with an 8 – 1 win. Selwyn took out 2nd place after a 1 – 0 win against Kennion.

1st – Kilburn (9 points)
2nd – Selwyn (6 points)
3rd – Kennion (3 points)
4th – Patteson (0 points)

Well done to all the girls who represented their House with pride.

From Our Head of Junior School

Adelaide SchoolsAt Saints Girls, we love investigating language, and what better time to celebrate language than Book Week? Whether it’s experimenting with words to create the perfect metaphor in a poem, investigating the peculiarities of English spelling patterns, or delving into the roots of today’s common words, we encourage our students to be word-rich, linguistic inquirers.

Junior School girls are learning to take words apart, query their meanings, be curious about connections between them, and investigate how to pronounce, spell and use those that are unfamiliar, based on their understanding of those that are known. I had a delightful experience in a Year 3 class last week when the students were investigating homophones – there, their, they’re; sea, see; hole, whole; etc. What a fabulous opportunity to introduce a provocation for investigation. ‘What about to, too and two?’ I asked. ‘Ah yes…’, was the general consensus, ‘…we know about them!’. ‘But why is the number 2 spelt t.w.o?’ I asked. ‘What’s the ‘w’ doing in there and how can we remember the spelling?’ Not surprisingly, there was a generally puzzled look among the girls! As I wrote two, twelve, twenty, twin and twice on the board, I asked if they could see any connections between them. Chatters of realisation moved around the group as we considered the ‘tw’ spelling pattern being connected to having 2 of something in very early variations of English. I added twist and twine, and between, which offered an opportunity to talk about what these words mean, their historical context and their relationship with ‘two’. Our language’s rich history has left us with hundreds of spelling patterns, many of which seem completely nonsensical, and as a result are difficult to remember. Narratives help give sense to the otherwise obscure.

Our language has morphed incredibly over its 1500-year history. It has profited from being influenced by multitudes of other languages, and embraced the need for new words to name and discuss endless developments in technology and changes to daily life. Purists among us might get cranky at missing apostrophes, the reintroduction of the word ‘gotten’, or overuse of ‘literally’ by people who mean ‘figuratively’. However, in the long-term, changes to language help us express ourselves in the context of the current day.

I had the good fortune to listen to Maria Prakash (Year 6) present her winning IPSHA Junior Orator Competition speech recently. With perfect, droll delivery, Maria delighted and intrigued her audience with her amusing thoughts about some of the influences on the English language that have led to the vibrant lexicon we have today. She celebrated Roald Dahl, who can be credited with introducing splendiferous, popularising gremlin and inventing scrumdiddlyumptious, the witching hour and Oompa Loompa, all of which have made it into mainstream dictionaries. She praised Shakespeare who, several centuries earlier, coined or adapted numerous words that are still in popular use today such as laughable, green-eyed, luggage, jaded, marketable, grovel and premeditated, to name a few.

More recent additions to our language include cryptocurrency, digital native, meme, air-fryer, super-spreader and teraflop. I can’t begin to list the vast array of acronyms that are also now with us – for how long, it’s hard to say.

If you think you’re struggling to keep up with new lingo, you wouldn’t be alone. Each year, an estimated 800 to 1000 new words are published in English language dictionaries. In the 20th century alone, more than 90,000 words were added. So, it’s worth continuing our efforts to encourage our students to have a keen interest in language, to investigate it with curiosity and use it with enthusiasm.

Happy Book Week, and happy reading everyone!

Head of Junior School

Enchante’s Enchanting Music Project

This year, instead of entering Generations in Jazz, Enchante decided to embark upon their own special recording project. Together with our Artist in Residence David Goodwin, we hit the recording studio, which in this case was our Music Room, one microphone and a laptop!

Keen to take our music-making to the next level yet still wanting to remain a capella, we invited guest artists Luke Thompson from ARIA award-winning group ‘The Idea of North’ to sing bass, and talented beat boxer Joseph Burgess to support us with vocal percussion.

Working with LS Creative Co., our next step was to create a video for general release. Wanting to incorporate the sea, clifftops and caves, we headed for Port Willunga which also provided us with the remains of the old Port Willunga Jetty as a spectacular backdrop.

Although conditions were incredibly cold and at times rainy, the Enchante girls pushed through to create this stunning video. Special thanks must go to Dave Goodwin, as well as Marie and Chris from LS Creative Co. Congratulations also to our amazing soloists Zara Blight, Stella Rasheed, Emma Pool and Samantha Keough, and to all of the Enchante girls.

We hope you enjoy our newest video single: ‘I Can Only Imagine’

Kate Burnett

I am so excited to be performing on the night and to be showing all our family and friends how much we’ve learnt for the past few months. I really enjoy dance because I get to know so many talented people in our year level and I also loved learning and experimenting with different art forms.

Shirley Liu

I am ecstatic to be performing in the Year 9 Arts Collab Night for both drama and dance as it is an amazing opportunity to showcase what we have been working on this year. I am participating in three dance numbers and one drama production and I am very excited.
We have been given the chance to create our own dance and drama pieces which has given us the freedom and the challenge to present something completely self-directed. I think this is an amazing, creative and fun way to extend our thinking and physical strength as well as collaborate with our peers.

World Premiere for Emerging Film Star

Year 9 student Zoë Min O’Callaghan has had the incredible experience of featuring in the documentary Embrace Kids by filmmaker Taryn Brumfitt, set for national release in cinemas next Thursday. I was recently privileged to be invited to an advance screening.

Zoë Min is among a cast of young people and adults, including comedian Celeste Barber and actor/activist Jameela Jamil, who explore the impact of issues such as body image, representation, social media and gender identity, and look at what can be done to effect change.

Embrace Kids is a follow up to Brumfitt’s breakout Netflix documentary Embrace which took on the global issue of negative body image among women and has been seen by over 200 million people worldwide.

Zoë Min recently enjoyed being interviewed on The Project ahead of the film’s release and attending the world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival. She shares:

‘I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this uplifting, funny and thought-provoking film. One of the messages I really connected with is how some content creators deliberately make us feel we’re not good enough in order to sell us things. When young people understand that, we’re empowered to question the messaging and unfollow those creators that don’t make us feel good. Young people don’t like feeling manipulated!’

Kilburn Spirit Week

This week, we’ve been celebrating all things Kilburn during our annual Spirit Week. The girls have shown their House pride by wearing yellow ribbons each day, also donning an additional yellow accessory yesterday, with the Year 12s dressing up in yellow outfits.

On Wednesday, we had our Spirit Week Chapel Service where I had the pleasure to present a speech comparing the properties of the element gold and how these can be related to our incredible House, highlighting the true values of Kilburn and what we embody.

Our Junior School House Captains Maisy and Audrey shared what it means to be in Kilburn, expressing their pride and passion for our House. We were also fortunate to enjoy a wonderful performance by Zara, Jenna and Kimmy who sang ‘Stand by Me’ by Ben. E King, accompanied by musicians Sam and Lauren.

Tonight, we’re looking forward to our House Dinner, coming together as a House once again. Thank you to the Year 11s who have worked extremely hard to organise this special evening. It has been absolutely amazing to see everyone embrace our House spirit this week and we are so excited to see what the rest of the term holds for Kilburn!

Go Kilburn!

Young Philosophers Take the Lead

Last week, the School’s Philosophy Team had the great opportunity to compete in the annual Australasian Philosothon Competition, where we placed 2nd overall!

The contest requires individuals to discuss philosophical ideas in a Community of Inquiry. This year, we considered the possibilities of time travel, whether humans could be considered ‘environmental saviours’, whether an Australian National Day was important and whether Artificial Intelligence could create art.

Our team of six – Ellie Humphrey, Emily McCorley, Jessica Zhang, Alison Francis and Alix Douglas and myself – examined these ideas with students from across Australia and New Zealand. The Philosothon is marked based on each student’s demonstration of critical thinking, creativity and collaboration.

After our qualification for this Australasian competition last year, we were particularly proud of our results; our best in the past five years where we have improved by one place every year to challenge reigning champions North Sydney Girls High School. Special mention to Alix Douglas and Alison Francis for placing 2nd and 1st respectively in their age categories.

In addition to being successful in this competition, our Philosophy programs across the School have inspired many students, including myself, to study philosophy as a subject in the IB program, and beyond school at tertiary level.

We were incredibly grateful for the support of Old Scholars Sara Peak (Kennion 2021) and Holly Wallman-Craddock (Selwyn 2021), and our amazing coach Ms Burton-Howard for all their support.

Global Gaze for Ethics Saints

The School is constantly connecting Old Scholars and current students through a variety of programs and competitions, including with Holly Wallman-Craddock (Selwyn 2021) who recently judged the South Australian and Northern Territory Senior Ethics Olympiad. Holly shares:

‘Since graduating from Saints Girls in 2021, I’ve been studying Law and Philosophy at the Australian National University in Canberra. When I was younger, studying philosophy at university was not an option that was even remotely on my radar, but my involvement in philosophy at Saints Girls changed that. At Saints, I had the opportunity to engage in philosophy through EDGE classes, Philosophy Club, and competitions like the Australasian Philosothon and International Ethics Olympiad. These experiences made me realise that philosophy is not just the domain of ancient men, and enabled me to develop my passion for philosophy.

Throughout 2022, I’ve been working as a judge for the Ethics Olympiad. So while our talented Saints’ team was competing at the International Ethics Final this year, I was there judging other Ethics teams from around the globe. It has been so rewarding to give back to a competition that I benefitted from so greatly as a student in my time at Saints, and I’m excited to see where my continued study of philosophy takes me.’

Following on from Saints’ success in the South Australian and Northern Territory Senior Ethics Olympiad earlier this year, the Senior Ethics team competed in the Final against 40 teams from across six different countries. The team found it insightful to hear new and varied perspectives on important ethical issues such as cheating in the Paralympics and the value of restorative justice practices. It was an incredible experience and we were all grateful to have the opportunity to compete in the Final where we were proud to finish 14th overall out of 40 schools from around the world.

During a series of vignettes, it follows the story of Lizzy, a woman in her 70s, experiencing changes in memory and at the beginning of a life-impacting diagnostic experience.

HOCKEY

Open A: Saints (6) v Pembroke (1)

This week, we had a great win against tough competition, Pembroke. We welcomed exchange students Matilda and Carlie from Perth’s Methodist Ladies College to the team. Matilda, having never played hockey before, made some top tackles as she chased down the Pembroke team, and Carlie had excellent speed and strength on the ball. Our defenders attempted some transfers which helped to open the field. Our goal scorers were Amelia (1), Leah (2) and a hat trick for Phoebe (3). A shoutout to Ayla, our goalie, for an amazing defensive game. She had multiple touches on the ball, kicking it out of our defensive circle with great power. – Bridgette Leach (Captain)

Open A: Saints (55) v Seymour (39)
The Open As had an amazing win defeating Seymour, something that has not been done for many years in the division. This scoreline is a testament to the hard work of the girls. From the outset, each player worked hard both defensively and in attack regardless of their position, putting full court pressure on Seymour that caused them to make errors. We transitioned the ball very efficiently from defence to attack. In particular, the goalie connection between Joss and Sophie in the goal circle was excellent. Also, a special mention goes to our circle defenders Willow, Chloe and Milly. All girls had a terrific game communicating very well and taking many intercepts. I am so proud of how the team has grown and improved this season, and we are all very excited for Intercol! – Alexia Politis (Captain)

Year 8A: Saints (21) v Seymour (34)
The 8As played a good game but unfortunately lost to a strong Seymour team. The whole court defensive effort created a lot of pressure, however the opposition’s shooters were very accurate. Our girls took many intercepts but weren’t always able to convert this into goals. Best players were Alyssa, Mia and Laurie. – Lisa Tulloch (Coach)

SOCCER

Premier League: Saints A (1) v Walford (1)
Division 1: Saints B (1) v Immanuel (0)
Division 3: Saints C (1) v Woodcroft (7)

Premier League: Saints A (1) v Walford (1) – Saints win on a penalty shootout
Congratulations girls, what a game! I’m so proud of you all and how you put every effort into it. We started off strong going 1 – 0 up at half-time. In the second half, we kept up the fight, giving it our all and only conceding 1 to make it a draw at full-time, meaning extra time. Although we dominated the extra time, we didn’t score, but we also kept Walford out with each of us working extremely hard.

The tension was high as we entered the penalty shootout, and it was great to see smiles on everyone’s faces, each encouraging one other as we decided who would be taking the shots. Goal after goal, cheer after cheer, we ended with a win! We saved our first win of the season to the most important one! I’m so proud of how far we have come and how everyone always gave 100%, and no matter what the scores were across the season, we always came away with a smile and a laugh. I am so honoured that I had the pleasure to be your Captain this year and to play with such an amazing group of girls, and I wish you all luck for next season. Thank you so much Mr Eglinton for all your support and positivity and always believing in us. – Lucy Benn (Captain)

Science Week at Saints

It’s National Science Week and the theme for 2022 is ‘Glass: There is more than meets the eye’. Many of our Junior School girls led the charge on Monday, eagerly participating in a range of colourful activities to celebrate all things science! Here’s a snapshot of some of their scientific endeavours.

Year 6 – Tools for Touchscreens
The Year 6 scientists began the day learning about touchscreens. They were required to design fair scientific tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various materials on an iPad touchscreen. Fruit seemed to be the best fit, with girls being able to select, type and draw on their iPads with apples, bananas and oranges!

Reception and Year 1 – Sugar-Glass Decorations
The Reception and Year 1 scientists investigated the use of glass in windows by making their very own sugar-glass windows. The window frames were constructed using dough, while the sugar-glass was created with hard boiled lollies. The girls were able to design their glass using different coloured lollies, making their windows look like stained glass.

Recess
During Recess, many girls gathered on the Oval to see even more science! We did a Mentos and Coke explosion, showing the girls how two common items can make large chemical reactions. They enjoyed seeing the Coke explode across the table!

Year 3 – Lava Lamps
Our Year 3 scientists were able to make their very own lava lamps! They combined water and oil together with food colouring and Alka-Seltzer tablets to create a colourful and bubbly reaction. They were very excited to see the way their lava lamps bubbled and fizzed and loved the chance do their own experiments in the Science labs.

Lunch
At Lunch, I had a large group of girls join me in the Science Centre to discover how glass is formed. We learned all about glassblowing and the techniques involved before the girls gave it a go themselves using honey! Honey has very similar properties to molten glass, meaning our scientists were able to see how temperature impacted their glassblowing.

Year 2 – Kaleidoscopes
The Year 2 scientists were captivated by kaleidoscopes. With the help of Emma, fourth year pre-service teacher, we planned a scientific experiment to make the light-capturing kaleidoscopes and observe the mirrored reflections. Each day this week, the Year 2 scientists engaged in experiments and activities to explore the glass theme. From nature walks with magnifying glasses, to playing with musical jars, to investigating how solar panels work, they’ve discovered that the magic of science is all around us!

Overall, the girls had a fantastic science-filled day learning all about the wonders of glass. Take a look at our short video Reel on Instagram below, which has already notched up almost 7000 views!

JobChat Gems at STEM Evening

On Tuesday evening, our Scientist in Residence Sophie Dolling hosted the JobChat STEM Careers Evening with guest speakers Amy Brooks-Birve, Ashleigh Geiger and Old Scholar Amy Seppelt (Kilburn 2001).

In conjunction with the University of Adelaide, our guests provided valuable advice about the advantages of studying STEM subjects at school and beyond. Parents and students were also given interesting insights about the guest speakers’ individual career changes within STEM study and work, and ultimately how each of them came to be in their current roles.

Upon listening to the speakers share their experiences, it was evident that exciting futures exist in STEM and women have an ever-increasing presence within these fields.

From Our Director of Enrolments, Marketing and Advancement

Adelaide Schools

Since arriving at Stonyfell nearly 11 years ago, I have been privileged to witness the journey our girls enjoy during their time at Saints. In my first five years at the School, I was involved in the day-to-day lives of our students, enabling me to learn about the many educational, co-curricular and wellbeing programs that we offer, and to observe our girls on their path towards adulthood. These experiences equipped me with the knowledge to guide our new families along their journey as the Director of Enrolments, a role I commenced in 2016.

This year, I commenced the role of Director of Enrolments, Marketing and Advancement, giving me the privilege to engage with our wider community. I have been fortunate to reconnect with a range of community members such as current and former parents and staff, Old Scholars, and particularly those community members who have held several roles at the School over the years. It is through these connections that a sense of belonging is created which is unique to Saints Girls. The strong dedication from you, our current parents, and your commitment to our School is what enables our girls and all community members to create lifelong memories, friendships and networks.

Looking back at my fondest memories of Saints Girls, what stands out are the times when we have come together to celebrate the girls and their achievements. As we emerge from the past two and a half years into our new definition of ‘normal’, I can once again feel our community coming together. The energy was palpable at our recent Choral Night and as we celebrate each House Spirit Week; the girls are embracing the ability to hold our events once more. You, as parents, are encouraged to come and celebrate your daughters at the many events that will occur throughout this semester. From welcoming new families into our ELC all the way through to farewelling our Year 12s, your presence at these occasions is truly valued.

In the Enrolments, Marketing and Advancement Office, I am joined by Enrolments Manager Rachel Vanderzon, Community Relations Manager Megan McCormack (nee Walker, Kilburn 1986), Community Relations – Events Officer Fiona McGregor, Enrolments and International Student Manager Ann Li, ELC Enrolments and Finance Officer Sarah Elliott (nee Royce, Selwyn 1986) and our School Archivist Anne Daniell (nee Crisp, Kennion 1969).

Please keep your eye on the School’s upcoming events. We look forward to seeing you there!

Red Letter Day: Patteson Spirit Week

This week, it has been all about Patteson as we celebrate Spirit Week. The girls of Patteson have shown their red spirit by wearing ribbons each day, with a red accessory today.

On Wednesday, we held Patteson House Chapel in which Deputy House Captain Martha McCormack and I spoke about what makes Patty, Patty and the special things about Patteson that set us apart from the other Houses. Junior School Captains Stella and Eva and Middle School Captain Charlotte shared what Patteson means to them. During this Chapel Service, we also witnessed a beautiful performance by some talented Pattesonites, Sophie, Sammi, Daisy and Charlotte, who sang ‘Your Song’ by Elton John.

As the week comes to an end, it has been absolutely amazing to see everyone’s passion for the House and red spirit shine through. Tonight, we look forward to coming together to celebrate Spirit Week at our House Dinner. It will be a really fun evening and we cannot wait to see all of the hard work the Year 11s have put into organising it!

Go Patteson!

Saints Girls Vs Saints Boys Prefect Netball

Last Friday lunch time, many girls gathered in the Gym to watch our annual Year 12 Prefect Netball match against Saints Boys.

We started with a strong lead of 8 – 0, with our amazing goal shooting team of Dayna and Toni and incredible defence from Ruby. The boys then caught up in the third quarter, making the game a close one. The buzzer rang at the end of the last quarter and the girls celebrated a win with the final score of 24 – 19!

We loved having the boys join us for the match and provide some good competition. It was also a great feeling having the support of the girls and staff cheering everyone on.

Mind-Blowing Results at MindLab Competition

Last Friday, some of our Year 5 and 6 students took part in the Interschool MindLab Competition at Pulteney Grammar School where Saints White placed 3rd and Saints Blue came 4th in the overall competition.

A variety of MindLab games are offered to all Saints Girls throughout their years in the Junior School. These thinking games support students to develop cognitive, emotional and ethical skills. Last term, the School ran a MindLab competition for Year 5 and 6 students including four games: Octi, Olympics Checkers, Abalone and Quoridor. From this, eight students were chosen to represent Saints Girls at the Interschool competition.

The students displayed excellent concentration throughout the day, as well as humility. A notable mention to students who also placed in their individual game: Anika Vaidya and Serena Zhang (1st in Octi), Chutong Liang (2nd in Olympic Checkers) and Victoria Zou (3rd in Quoridor).

Well done to all girls involved.

Saints Rock ‘Princes On the Parade’

Saints Rock Band performed at the ‘Princes On Parade’ event last Friday at the Osmond Terrace Function Centre, Norwood Hotel. Seven other school rock bands played, with Prince Alfred College, Wilderness School and Seymour College all represented.

Our girls performed three pieces in a range of styles, starting with tight R&B and pop songs that demonstrated the strength of our rhythm section and vocalists. This was followed by the highlight of their set, ‘Skyfall’ by Adele. Saints showcased not only their amazing vocal skills but also their talent on strings and brass.

Throughout the night, the bands supported and encouraged each other, sitting up close to the stage and cheering loudly. The whole evening was inspiring, fun and packed with entertainment, featuring a full rock light show, synchronised dancing, punk antics on stage and the occasional mosh pit! This is a night Saints Rock Band will remember, and we hope to do it all again next year!

Out of the Blue – A Chat with Shelley Hampton, Director of the Year 5 Production

Ms Hampton is one of our Year 5 teachers here at St Peter’s Girls, and is responsible for directing and organising the annual Year 5 Production. As well as being a lover of theatre, she has a passion for performing and directing that provides her with a creative outlet. She has been in multiple plays around Adelaide, been in film and TV commercials, and studied drama most of her early life. Without further ado, here is our interview with Ms Hampton.

What does drama mean to you?
It gives me an outlet for my creativity. I do the production here at school – I love directing, but I love performing, so being on stage is just one of those things that gives me a high. It’s like some people get endorphins from exercise; I get it from being on stage, I love it. Some people paint, some people draw, some people sing – I do singing as well, but drama – acting – is my real passion.

Why do you think drama is important at school?
I think it’s one of the most important subjects to learn at school. It teaches you to collaborate with other people, it teaches you about yourself, about how you can build your own confidence, it teaches you all sorts of presentation skills and awareness of other people, so it’s a really good collaborative process and an excellent outlet for kids’ creativity as well.

What has been your career in drama?
I did a lot of study in drama when I was very young, and then I did TV commercials and I did some film. I did modelling for different companies – in those days it was Harris Scarfe and David Jones and things like that. Then I went on to do a bit more study of drama methodology – mainly Stanislavski methodology, and Theatre Sports and that was really interesting. I started out in musical theatre, doing a lot of singing, dancing and prancing around in a costume, but I prefer to do plays. I’ve done quite a lot of plays around Adelaide. I audition, then I get it, and then I go and give it my all. I’m in another play next year in April, so I start rehearsing for that in January, which is exciting.

What got you interested in drama?
I think my mum. My mum loves music and so she would play me lots of musical theatre music on records back in the day, and she would talk to me about the stories of different musicals like Oklahoma and Carousel, and then when I started high school, I started reading a lot of plays, got very into Shakespearean writing. I really enjoyed Ibson, really enjoyed Coward – lots of really good plays. It all started with my mum, however.

What doors do you think drama opens for the future?
It can lead to so many things because it builds your confidence. I can stand up in front of Assembly and talk to people. I’ve led conferences and training workshops and all of that helps you with confidence on stage. It doesn’t terrify me to stand up in front of a microphone, or in front of a group of people. I just think it builds your personal growth; it makes you a stronger person.

We ask all of our community members to support road safety and show courtesy to others.

AEROBICS

Our Aerobics girls recently performed incredibly well at the local Blitz It Challenge. The Tinkerbells claimed Gold in the senior Novice division, an impressive achievement! Our girls also shone in the Advanced division, with Freaky Friday winning Silver and The Stars taking out Bronze.

These girls are continuing to train hard as they prepare for Nationals next month in Brisbane, and we wish them all the best!

On Saturday, we demonstrated strength as a team, with a win against Seymour. We competed with only eight players and managed to keep the ball in our attacking half for most of the game with a few breakaways by Seymour. Well done to Jess for working the ball into the circle and scoring 4 goals, and to Maddie for persisting in attack and scoring a great goal. Our other goal scorers were Zara (2), Amelia (2) and Bridgette (3). Holly laid strong tackles in defence and worked well to slap the ball up the sideline. Amelia and Bridgette took turns playing goalie this week which was very entertaining (for the rest of the team) and a fun new experience! Thank you to the girls this week for your hard work and to our coach Tash for taking on the challenge. – Bridgette Leach (Captain)

Our team has improved significantly over the course of the season, which was illustrated in the game. Although a loss, this was a substantial improvement from our previous fixture against the same team, one of the strongest in the division. The girls have been working on formation and pressure and showed good improvements in these areas, with players pressing high and contesting possession. The team effectively restricted Mercedes in their opportunities and created counter-attacking opportunities of our own. Grace Stevens starred once again in goal, making multiple saves and leading the team with her communication. Equally impressive was the courage of those stretching themselves in new positions including Ella Lawes and Jiana Song. – Brynley Millward (Coach)

eNews – Week 3, Term 3 2022

Issue no. 23
Enews-banner

From Our Director of Teaching and Learning

Adelaide SchoolsI have always believed that the purpose of education is to help nurture and shape thriving young people, adept learners, and leaders for our ever-changing and challenging world. All students are capable of success when their personal and learning needs are supported. Such support facilitates both academic success and holistic development in preparation for their post-school journey.

As an educational leader, these beliefs have always informed my work and continue to shape what I want to achieve as a new member of the St Peter’s Girls’ community. As educators, it is our responsibility to know your daughters well, tailor our teaching to their needs and help build their resilience to support their success.

In my first weeks, I have been overwhelmed by the spirit of the Saints Girls’ community. Staff, students and families have been incredibly welcoming and have offered their unwavering support. Joining this community, I see the incredible opportunities available to your daughters that allow them to experience deep and diverse learning, and to be able to discover and follow their passions in and outside of the classroom.

Through my leadership, I will support our girls to challenge themselves by approaching their academic studies and personal ventures courageously. I will promote that our teaching and learning programs foster critical and creative thinking to ensure our girls are future-ready and make the absolute most of their time here. Our girls will live with compassion in their hearts and be stewards of empathy and service for this world.

It is evident to me how special a place Saints Girls is. I have loved learning about our history, but more so learning about all that we offer, learning about all the amazing educators in the girls’ classrooms and how staff go above and beyond to support them every day. Experiencing Choral Night exemplified the essence of Saints Girls. We are a school that supports and empowers young women to find their voice and have the confidence to value their absolute worth.

I look forward to working with you all in partnership, supporting your daughters and advocating for their voice to ensure that their schooling journey truly shapes them into the women, lifelong learners and leaders they are to become.

New Chapter for Love of Literacy in ELC

At St Peter’s Girls’ Early Learners’ Centre, literacy is embedded in all that we do. We understand active play is the vehicle that helps young children’s brains build early communication skills, which mature and develop into formal reading and writing skills later in their schooling years.

Book-making is just one technique we have been using, allowing children to express their thoughts in a creative and fun way. Even if they are yet to master the skill of letter formation, book-making empowers children to feel they are competent storytellers and writers.

Eisteddfod Vocalists in Fine Voice

Last Friday, Esperanza and sub-groups of Just Jazz and In-Ta Jazz hit the road to compete in the Balaklava Eisteddfod, taking out top honours at this two-day Performing Arts festival. Schools from all over the metropolitan area attended the event which fosters collegiality between schools and the opportunity to share music with each other.

As only nine vocalists were able to compete in each choral group, risk-taking was high on the agenda! Congratulations to Esperanza who placed 1st in the hotly-contested Senior Division. Singing a traditional piece with an extremely high difficulty level and including an 8-part harmony, the adjudicator commended the group as a ‘particularly outstanding choir’.

This competition was a first for Just Jazz who, much to their delight, came 1st in the Junior Division with the adjudicator stating, ‘A very exciting rendition of this toe-tapping item with beautifully balanced voices.’

In-Ta Jazz also put in an outstanding performance and presented themselves with great confidence, placing 2nd in the Intermediate Division.

Congratulations to all students who participated in this event!

Linguistics Girls Talk of the Town

Our students have done Saints Girls proud in the second South Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (SACLO), once again delivering exceptional results.

SACLO was designed as a South Australian version of the national competition, which is held in Term 1 each year. Thirty one teams from six schools had to decode languages they had most likely not encountered such as Swahili, Esperanto and dialects from Vanuatu and Micronesia, to work out the rules of the language and then translate some words, phrases and sentences from English back into the other language.

Following on from lats year’s success in winning the inaugural competition, Saints Girls claimed 1st and 3rd places in the Senior (Years 10 – 12) section, and 2nd and 3rd places in the Junior (Years 7 – 9) section – an impressive two-thirds of the places on offer.

This was our fourth consecutive Linguistics Olympiad in which we have had teams take out a place. We look forward to the continuing success of Saints Girls in this exciting collaborative activity.

Year 2 Explorers Step Back in Time

Visiting the School Museum last Monday was like stepping back in time for the Year 2 students who were able to immerse themselves in the rich history of Saints Girls. Our current unit of inquiry, ‘Where we are in Place and Time’, is the ideal opportunity to investigate the past and understand how life has changed.

Mrs Anne Daniell presented an array of historic photographs showing how the School site has changed in location and over time. The girls have conducted a photographic tour of the School grounds to capture changes over the years of our significant and beautiful buildings. Comparing classroom objects from the past to present day items such as writing implements, desks, chairs and even readers was eye-opening, and the girls were captivated by the way some things change enormously and others stay the same.

The girls can now use their knowledge of the past to better understand the present and imagine the future as they create images of what our School site may look like in generations to come.

Moving Art Project One for the Ages

Congratulations to talented artist Misha Yagnik on her outstanding art piece titled ‘Cecil Ireland’ which she entered into the Centenarian Portrait Project for Teens.

Misha shares:

‘The project involved 100 teenagers painting 100 centenarians in an attempt to strengthen intergenerational bonds and create connections throughout our community. I was inspired to take on the project with the support of Ms Mansfield and my family. I was given the opportunity to meet Cecil Ireland, a kind-hearted man who had recently celebrated his 100th birthday. During our time together, I learnt about Cecil’s family history, his life stories and exciting adventures (all whilst nibbling on apricot chocolates of course).

He inspired me to embrace the life I am given and make the most of all situations. The project has opened my eyes to the wisdom of the elderly and the simple joys found in the mundane. My painting was inspired by the most influential things in Cecil’s life such as his brown leather chair, interest in genealogy and his late wife, Kathleen. After meeting Cecil, I have become more aware of the positives of ageing as well as the importance of removing the negative stigma surrounding getting older.

The Centenarian Project taught me The Arts have a way of bridging all differences in society, connecting us all through a language not of words but instead of creativity and emotion. They have a way of conveying raw human feelings without saying a single thing. Human identity is founded in the way we communicate and express ourselves to others. The Arts provide us with a creative outlet which influences who we are as well as others around us.’

Misha’s artwork will be featured in this year’s School Arts Journal, Out Of The Blue. The Journal is a great opportunity to share artwork, writing, music, dance or other creative pieces and be published. It explores connections in our wider School community, creating a beautiful final collaborative book celebrating the best of Saints’ Arts.

If you are interested in submitting a piece, please email outoftheblue@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au. Work will be selected and entrants notified if they are successful in gaining publication. Please ensure your name, year level and Class Teacher/Home Group are listed. This opportunity is open to all students, as well as Old Scholars, past staff and current staff. Entries close Friday 7 October.

AUSSIE RULES

Open A: Saints (62) v Pulteney (0)
Last week, our team had our first win of the season, against Pulteney’s new team. Although they forfeited ahead of the game, our team was able to use the match as some great practice with a resounding win, keeping Pulteney scoreless.

As the Captain this year, I’ve been so pleased with the success of our Aussie Rules program in assembling a solid team of girls to face some tough sides in the Division 1 competition. The strong interest in footy this year meant that we were able to select our best players for a consistent and reliable team.

I feel so proud of the efforts of our team, especially when compared to our first years playing in the Middle School competition. We are assuredly stronger because of our experience playing together as a school group, and as more girls sign up for footy each year, there is a growing expectation of dedication to the game. Our win is a reflection of the progression of our School’s footy program, driven by true interest in the sport that I’m sure will continue into future years. – Emily Teague (Captain)Middle A: Saints (19) v St Ignatius (0)
On Friday night, the Middle As played St Ignatius College at Payneham Football Club and took home a win. Over the season, the girls have been working hard to develop tactics and stronger footy skills in kicking, ball handling and tackling. We scored 3 goals and 1 behind, with defence so strong that St Ignatius was kept scoreless. Goalkickers were Izzy, Ruby and Olivia, and our point was scored by Grace. The girls have created a strong bond as a team which helped lead to this win. – Amelia Sutherland and Shea Forster
