Every Child Can Be A Powerful Mathematician!

Partnering with families and educators to form a shared understanding about learning is an ongoing priority in the Early Learners’ Centre. We invited Mathematics Consultant Lisa-Jane O’Connor (pictured above) to facilitate a session for families at the beginning of Term 2. This is a key part of our strategic approach to continuously improve the teaching and learning opportunities for all children and to provide a consistent pathway from ELC to Reception.

This session provided us with a richer understanding of the importance to believe that all children can be and already are powerful mathematicians. It is very important to emphasise our language about mathematics with children. These are such powerful conversations. Learning to understand the science of patterns, rules and relationships is complex. Lisa-Jane was pivotal in ensuring families understand that from birth, children are already engaging in mathematics. Pattern is an example of this, as a newborn baby is able to communicate the difference between familiar and unfamiliar adults (sorting and classifying). From eight months of age, babies are entering their world of numbers. As adults, we can be great leaders of this mathematical language, and we should strive to notice and name when children are acting like a mathematician.

Demonstrating a positive attitude to mathematics is key to all of this. Our young learners need to be surrounded with mathematical language in both playful and intentional ways. We need to be highlighting where they use mathematics in their lives and looking at play with a mathematical lens. This will assist in building a curiosity around mathematics and encourage children to develop a stronger interest.

Lisa-Jane works with the teachers and children in the ELC twice each term. The work that we have been undertaking alongside her has transformed the language and intention we use in the area of mathematics. There is a confidence and consistency now about how we can engage with the five mathematical drawers: Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Data and Number. Our children have become pattern seekers and pattern resolvers!

When families were asked why they came to the session, they were quick to articulate their desire to be able to support their child, to learn alongside them and to work alongside the educators. Lisa-Jane shared that, in her home, a mathematical book (that is a story book with a focus on mathematics) is read regularly, and a page of a mathematical dictionary is included in the bedtime ritual. Giving emphasis to this area ensures we are embedding mathematical concepts and language from birth and not just placing focus on whether or not our children can write and count 1 to 20.

Everyone left the session feeling invigorated, and the educators were so thrilled to have families come along and want to be part of these collaborative activities with such a strong curriculum focus. We look forward to running another session in the future to continue our mathematical learning journey together.

Year 4 Campers Head for the Hills

Adelaide Schools

47 eager and enthusiastic Year 4 campers journeyed to Woodhouse Activity Centre in the Adelaide Hills this week for their active camping experience. The three-day program included a range of group and individual development activities. Through these fun experiences, students developed important personal and social skills such as being a good team player and building a growth mindset and resilience by persisting with challenges.

To link with our current Unit of Inquiry, ‘Living things depend on each other and the environment to survive’, we expanded our understanding of the natural world and practices that build a sustainable future. We are very appreciative to our Active Ed outdoor education leaders and Kaurna elder Tamaru for their knowledge, organisation and patience.

Highlights included cultural clay cooking, orienteering, ‘story of camp’ painting using Kaurna symbols, and of course, our Challenge Hill achievements which you can watch in the video below. Wednesday night created many laughs and memories for the girls as we ran a quiz featuring celebrities. As a treat on the final night, the girls enjoyed a movie with melted marshmallow smores!

The Year 4 cohort had a wonderful experience.

Close Shave for Fundraising Saints

This year, several students from the Middle and Senior Schools are participating in The World’s Greatest Shave taking place on Monday 17 May at Saints Girls. This community service initiative started small with three Year 12 students deciding to shave their heads for this cause, encouraging girls to ‘Be Bald and Get Involved’, but word soon got around and we now have 10 students and two teachers taking part!

The fact that so many girls are willing to lose their locks to support such an important cause is truly commendable and demonstrates the courage and compassion that we value so much. Emily Teague, a Year 11 student, explains her decision to participate:

There were two main reasons I chose to get involved in The World’s Greatest Shave this year. The first, and perhaps more obvious, was that it was a great opportunity to raise money and awareness for leukaemia as a school. Every new shaver has the potential to raise more funds which are donated to the Leukaemia Foundation, which supports those diagnosed with leukaemia and their families, in addition to continuing the search for a cure. Something I found particularly inspiring was the range of support the foundation offers; for instance, the emotional support services which are given to patients and families.

The second reason I chose to shave was to point out that hair isn’t everything. Cancer patients don’t get the luxury to choose whether to keep their hair, and especially for women, hair can be connected to our sense of self. Speaking to some of the many girls shaving their heads for this cause, it’s really scary; however, in doing so, we are showing solidarity with all of those who lose their hair through treatments.

So far, we have raised $11,000 and are well on our way to reaching our goal of $15,000, which will support 300 families dealing with the aftermath of a leukaemia diagnosis. However, we cannot reach this milestone without your help. If anyone wants to donate to this cause and support our own brave students and teachers shaving their heads, and the tens of thousands of Australians diagnosed with blood cancer every year, you can do so here.

To raise extra funds, our Stage 1/Year 11 girls prepared a range of delicious street foods to serve at lunchtime this week. It is inspiring to see our School community come together to support such a wonderful cause.

Back to the Futures

Adelaide Schools

During Week 1, the Year 7 Futures students were involved in the Academy for Enterprising Girls’ Workshop. This was facilitated by the Young Change Agents, a social enterprise that works with schools to deliver enterprising programs. The two-day program was an opportunity for students to understand and develop design thinking skills and use them to establish a social-enterprise business. The workshop concluded on Friday afternoon with each group pitching their business idea to a panel of judges who we thank for their time and expertise.

Marissa Schulze: Director, Rise High and Old Scholar

Anne Monceaux: Mayor of Burnside and Old Scholar

Beth Worrall: National Skills Program Lead, Microsoft

Dr Tanya Jayne: CEO and Co-Founder of Xaminai

Congratulations to the following teams who have been invited to participate in the Youth Incubator Program to bring their idea one step further to reality:

Winning team

Gender Bender

Problem: ‘School uniform is not gender-inclusive and is not comfortable.’

Solution: design a lookbook showcasing a suite of inclusive uniforms.

Lilly Cramp, Lucy Lowry, Ashmitha Ramesh, Izzy Tucker, Emily Bates and Eliza Brill Reed.

Runner up

No Colour

Problem: ‘I feel discriminated, I unconsciously discriminate. I need to learn about other races. I want to connect with others in my own and other races. I want to tell my story. I want to see if I am contributing to the issue and how I can help.’

Solution: a website that educates young people about racism and teaches them about other races through interactive stories, infographics and productions from other cultures.

Jiahui Zhang, Nethushi Ratnayake, Charlize Cameron-Chilver, Sophie Lively, Annie Goldsmith and Valerie Ng.

“It has been a very fun experience to have professional young women to talk to us about entrepreneurship and creating a business. This is a great learning tool for the future, as some of us may want to create a business to change the community. The Year 7s including myself were very grateful to receive this opportunity.” – Elodie de Wit

“The Year 7 cohort was fortunate to take part in the workshop where we were able to learn about entrepreneurship and creating our own business. We were so lucky to receive constructive feedback from the experts and have them assist us in the process. The course was divided into different sections with multiple activities, each one consisting of a new strategy. First of all, we were encouraged to brainstorm a topic and blurt out all our thoughts in limited amounts of time, pressuring us to think quickly and creatively. We learnt numerous skills such as problem-solving, pitching a topic, creating prototypes, designing logos/websites, making surveys, and we discovered how to compress our ideas. This experience was informative, enjoyable and gave us an insight into creating real-world businesses.” – Eliza Brill Reed and Eve Dillon

Budding Leaders Learn the Ropes

Adelaide Schools

In Term 2, our Year 6 Leaders will be facilitating a program in the Junior School where all students will delve deeper into the character strengths of bravery, creativity, perspective and love of learning. In preparation for this, the girls undertook Peer Leadership Training on Tuesday.

This involved discussions and hands-on activities on aspects of group facilitation such as empathy, decision-making, problem-solving, non-verbal communication and reflection. Now armed with this knowledge and experience, the students are looking forward to implementing the program.

Reception French Class – Oui Love It!

In Reception French, we have been learning about the colours of the rainbow in French. The girls love learning songs and it is great to see them having fun moving and dancing to the music while singing in French! The actions in this song help everyone to remember the meaning of the words and to focus on each line of the song.

We have also used our colour words in French to describe objects in the room, our favourite fruits and the artworks students have created. Our favourite game at the moment is ‘Trouvez quelque chose…’ where students find different colours around the classroom. Why not see if your little French learner can tell you what their favourite colour is in French or which colours they can spot in your outfit?

IB EXPO 2021

IB School

Tuesday 11 May 5.30 – 7pm

Would you like to learn about the IB Diploma Programme? In Years 11 and 12, students can undertake the excellent and world-renowned IB Diploma. Before they do, it is important to understand the structure of the programme, as well as its courses and assessments, so your daughter can choose the pathway/courses that best suit.

Due to COVID restrictions, we were unable to hold this event in person last year. Hence, Year 9 and Year 10 parents are particularly encouraged to attend the IB information evening this year. The IB EXPO will be held on Tuesday 11 May from 5.30 – 7pm in the Middle School. As well as our Year 9 and 10 parents and their daughters, all members of our community and the public are also welcome.

As the IB Diploma Coordinator, I will present the structure of the Diploma, including differences with SACE and how universities recognise IB Diploma achievement. Another amazing way to understand the benefits and experiences that the Diploma offers is to hear from our graduates who have completed it and our students who are currently undertaking their Diploma. IB teachers will also be available to share their perspectives from a subject specialist point of view.

5.30 – 6.15pm
Carolyn Farr, IB Diploma Coordinator: What is the IB Diploma?

6.15 – 7pm
Parents and students can chat with current IB students, IB teachers, IB parents and IB graduates.

Year 9 and 10 students will also have smaller information sessions during this term; however, the IB EXPO experience is a great way to hear from different people all in the one place.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you and sharing my passion for this programme.

Cake Creators Go Next Level

One of the creative and challenging assignments in the Stage 2 Food and Hospitality course is the construction of a contemporary cake suitable for the hospitality industry. The students researched the various designs of cakes with the aim of creating their own unique product.

The class participated in a master class with Tania Turnbull who creates her own cakes for sale; this enabled them to learn a range of valuable skills required for their final cakes. The girls also planned and ordered or sourced all aspects of the cake such as the decorations and ingredients. Consideration of the time available and appropriate storage and temperature control to ensure their creations were completed to industry standards was also very important.

Each student successfully created the many elements of their signature cake ensuring they complemented each other, resulting in a creative and artistic high-quality product reflecting contemporary design trends.

COVID Measures

Please note the following information regarding our continued COVID response.

The School has a QR code tracing system to facilitate the safe return of parents on site, in line with wider government measures. Parents entering the campus to drop off or collect their children need to scan the QR code provided each time. This also applies to parents visiting the School for events such as parent information evenings or sports training/matches.

Parents and visitors with more formal appointments at the School, such as meeting a staff member, are still required to sign in/out at Front Office and also need to scan the QR code as well for SA Health tracing purposes.

Adults who do not have a device to scan the QR code need to write their details on the paper form provided in the Front Office.

Parents who remain in their vehicles in the main car park do not need to scan in, and students do not need to scan in as the School already tracks daily attendance.

Logistics around events will be shared in due course, dependent upon the latest advice. Attendance numbers, particularly for indoor events, will still need to be restricted to facilitate social distancing.

The following general requirements remain in place:

  • Ensure adults maintain a distance of 1.5m from each other.
  • Practise sound hand washing and other hygiene measures.
  • Students should remain at home if they are unwell; please notify the School of absences by texting 0428 601 957, emailing attendance@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au, or calling 8334 2200.

We thank all of our families for your cooperation.

eNews – Week 1, Term 2 2021

Issue no. 11

Enews-banner

Adelaide Schools

From Our Principal

Deputy Principal

I remember walking into the kitchen last year and my girls asking quizzically, ‘Are you home for dinner again?’ Ever the optimist, I didn’t read any disappointment into their tone! Rather, it was a statement on the busyness of Saints Girls, which when coupled with three teenage lives, meant it was a rarity for us all to sit down and eat dinner together. However in April last year, being home for dinner had become the new normal. Although not in lockdown, social distancing guidelines resulted in the cancellation of school and university events, forcing us all to stay home and reconnect. The nightly battle to get to the kitchen prior to my vegan daughter taking over every pot, pan and appliance in the kitchen was (and still is) very real! But apart from that, the slower pace of life was viewed by many, including my family, as a silver lining of the pandemic.

Fast forward to 2021, and that quiet existence is a distant memory. In Term 1, we watched Selwyn triumph at Swimming Carnival and Kennion sing and dance their way to Choral Night glory. The noise in Influencers Church was deafening and the sheer power and contagious nature of the indomitable Saints Girls’ spirit was once again clearly on show. Year 7 enjoyed a week in and around Robe and Year 8 explored Kangaroo Island. Our swimmers achieved outstanding results winning the A Grade division of the School Sport SA Swimming Championships for the first time since 2003 and the IGSSA Championship for the fifth time in six years. Not to be outdone, our amazing athletes equalled their best ever result at the A Grade School Sport SA Track and Field Championships, finishing 2nd. We’ve won premierships in Water Polo and Touch Football, enjoyed success at the State Schools Triathlon and won an impressive six titles at the State Rowing Championships. Our Girls in Tech Expo was simply awesome, Music Camp returned in a different guise and rehearsals began in earnest for our School Musical A Chorus Line which will be performed later this term. And just for good measure, we rounded out Term 1 with Summer Interhouse. To say ‘we’re back’ would be an understatement.

Late in Term 1, I was thrilled to announce the launch of the fundraising campaign for our long-awaited Gym. We are working with our architects on design options for donor recognition and will share those with you once confirmed. We have a number of functions and events planned with dates and details being finalised. The full campaign will run until 30 June next year, and all amounts donated by a family over the 15 month campaign period will be tallied to determine the level of acknowledgement. The last time the School ran a major fundraising campaign was for the Arts Centre well over a decade ago. We look forward to your support so that we can provide another state-of-the-art facility for Saints Girls.

A further easing of social distancing restrictions will see the School allow audiences of up to 75% of venue capacity this term. With the School Musical, Senior Drama Production and SACE Choreography Evening, there is much to look forward to and I hope you can support the girls at these fabulous events. Please continue to scan the QR code each time you enter the School and, as always, remain at home if you feel unwell.

In staffing news, we welcome Kirsty Porplycia back to the ELC following her long service leave, and wish Annalisa Cecere all the best as she commences maternity leave. Liz Thomas will be taking Annalisa’s classes during this time. Following almost 25 years of exceptional service as a laboratory technician, we say farewell to Anne Sinclair. Anne is an Old Scholar, has travelled the journey as a parent, and did an amazing job in helping us transition to the new Science Centre. We wish Anne all the best in her retirement.

Have a wonderful term!

Languages Week – Culture and Connection

It is easy to think that with most international travel still off the table, there is not much of a need to be able to speak a foreign language here in our island country of Australia. However, many of our girls and their families will tell you that language is not just about knowing words, it is about belonging. Language helps you identify with other speakers of the language, it gives you an inside view of the culture, the viewpoints and the beliefs of others who speak that language.

The girls here at Saints are very fortunate; they have a range of languages to choose from. In fact, we offer five different languages at various stages of the School: Chinese (Mandarin), French, Japanese, Spanish and English as an Additional Language or Dialect. This week is Languages Week at Saints Girls and we have been celebrating this important aspect of our School.

We kicked off the week with Cynthia, our International Student Prefect, introducing Languages Week at Assembly. We watched a video about the benefits of learning a language and then Cynthia explained the various activities on offer across the week. These included popular songs in Spanish, Chinese square dancing, games of pétanque (French bowls), origami and music from around the globe. In addition, the Junior School girls participated in a flag colouring competition (Reception and Year 1) and year level quizzes (Years 2 – 6). The middle and senior girls also had the opportunity to participate in a Kahoot! quiz about languages around the world.

It has been wonderful watching the girls embrace the week with enthusiasm and learn a little more about the five languages on offer at Saints Girls.

‘JobChat’ Talk of the Town

Deputy Principal

JobChat is a new way for our girls to connect with professionals. Within an informal chat-like setting, your daughter has a chance to talk with someone in a career that might appeal to her, asking about their life and daily work in that particular field. A chat over lunch – it’s that simple.

JobChat is open to girls in Years 10 to 12. A different profession will be offered each month, thus, over time, covering a wide variety of careers. A survey of our Year 12 girls showed significant interest in the areas of Health, Creative Arts and Business/Finance.

Our first JobChat is in Week 3 this term where we will welcome one of our parents, Simone Hogarth, to talk with the girls about her career in health, specifically diagnostic pathology, being a principal medical scientist and Director of Business Development for a large health organisation.

If you would like to volunteer time during lunch to chat with our girls about your career journey, please contact Carolyn Farr via cfarr@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au

The co-curricular Drama focus at Prince Alfred College enables all boys, whether they are studying Drama as an academic subject or not, to perform as part of an ensemble in a major production every year. This year we are proud to be associated with Alicia Zorkovic, Co-Director of Wings2Fly Theatre Company and George Torbay, Head of Music Theatre at the Elder Conservatorium, who have been working alongside the Performing Arts staff to deliver a first-rate production in late August.

Willy Russell’s masterpiece, Blood Brothers, is a hilarious, heartbreaking and multi-award winning musical which tells the story of the Johnstone twins. Separated at birth when their mother cannot afford to keep them both, Mickey and Edward grow up only streets away from each other but worlds apart – one rich, one poor. There can be only one tragic end to this story when the prophecy of their death comes true in a shattering conclusion.

Blood Brothers is one of only three musicals to ever run on the West End in London for more than ten thousand performances (the other two are Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera).

More girls from our sister schools are invited to take part by auditioning on Tuesday 27 April 2021 at 6pm.

All you will need to do for auditions is to register via the form (by clicking the link above) and an audition information pack will be sent to you. You do not need to be the best singer or dancer – if you do not receive a named role, you will be invited to be part of the team in another area.

Thank you for your interest!

Regards,
Ms. Little

Terms 2 and 3

Reception to Year 4!

Dear Families

The lunchtime tennis program in Term 1 was fantastic. Girls from Reception to Year 3 enjoyed improving their skills and had loads of fun on court!

I am happy to announce that we are able to continue the lunchtime tennis coaching in terms 2 and 3 which will be privately run by myself. If your daughter participated in Term 1 or you would like to enrol for the first time, please let me know. We start the program in next week, but your daughter can join at anytime.

Any girls in Year 4 who may like to enrol can do so. Group sizes are generally smaller (approximately 4 per group) in terms 2 and 3 which works well.

If you would like to enrol your daughter, please contact me directly via mobile on 0412 855 073 or email ford.matt@bigpond.com.

Fitness and fun rounded out Term 1 at this afternoon’s Summer Interhouse. Middle and senior girls competed across Touch Football, Basketball, Tennis, Volleyball and, for the first time in this format, Rowing. In addition, some of our Junior School students had a taste of the action with Years 3 to 6 battling it out in Interhouse Teeball.

From Our Deputy Principal / Head of Middle School

One of the key principles of our School is that we are not just educating our students to pass examinations or achieve an admirable ATAR, but that we develop our graduates to the extent that they leave us as forthright, independent young women who are prepared to participate in and engage with the world outside school. This is done in a number of ways, including but not limited to our co-curricular, wellbeing, service learning and outdoor education programs.

Over recent years, we have also developed a multi-faceted Global Academy, enabling our students to learn about and take action on local, national and international levels, as well as having the opportunity to undertake overseas study trips. We have also developed a thriving Global Exchange program providing opportunities for students to gain a deep understanding of and appreciation for cultures and peoples around the world. It allows students to engage with fellow students, teachers and other adults with a range of opinions, experiences and backgrounds.

One of the unfortunate consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the subsequent closure of Australia’s national borders, has been the suspension of overseas study trips. Indeed, we were due to welcome four students from Kent Place School in New Jersey, USA on the very day that our borders closed for overseas visitors. Luckily, they had made the decision not to travel just a few days beforehand! With no decision yet about when, post vaccine, our borders may open, we have not been able to plan any overseas exchanges for 2021 either.

However, we have been in contact with girls’ schools within Australia, who are keen to investigate possible interstate exchanges for students still wishing to experience life at a different school, in a different state. I was delighted to announce this to our Year 10 girls this week, even if it was exactly at the moment that the Queensland government announced that Brisbane was, unfortunately, heading into another short lockdown!

St Peter’s Girls has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for short-term homestay exchanges later in 2021 with St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School in Brisbane, and Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) in Perth. Both of these prestigious schools share our determination to be able to offer our students an exchange opportunity despite the uncertainty surrounding internal borders and snap lockdowns.

I look forward to discussing these exciting opportunities with parents and students in the next few weeks, and once again welcoming visiting students to our vibrant community.

Richard Lisle
Deputy Principal/Head of Middle School

Australian National Rowing Championships

In Week 9, a small squad of our Senior Rowers travelled to Tasmania to compete at the 2021 Australian Rowing Championships (or ‘Nationals’) being held at the Lake Barrington International Rowing Course. Competing day-after-day in a week long regatta is a unique challenge, and as should be expected, the standard of competition at Nationals is exceptionally high. Being exposed to the intensity of racing from the best crews in the country provided a lot of valuable learning experiences for our rowers.

During the week, our students also had the opportunity to catch up with Old Scholar, world champion and Olympic rower Olympia Aldersey (Kennion 2011). Olympia shared her experience and wisdom with the girls (‘don’t be timid!’), as well as recounting some of her memories of her time at Saints Girls. Olympia will be representing Australia at the Tokyo Olympics later this year, her second Olympics. Good luck Olympia!

The week was not just a learning experience, however, as our students excelled throughout the week, achieving a number of impressive results:

4th – U19 W2- – Milla Barei, Clare Romaniuk
4th – U19 W2x – Sophie Barr, Sophia Wightman (University of Queensland Boat Club)
5th – SG4+ – Letitia Page-Thomson (Cox), Sophie Barr, Clare Romaniuk, Milla Barei, Charlotte Parker

At the conclusion of the event, Sophie, Clare and Milla represented South Australia in the Interstate Regatta in the Women’s Youth Eight (Bicentennial Cup), and were joined on the State team by Olympia.

Well done to these students on their exceptional results!

Director of Rowing

Story of the Cross – Healing and Harmony

Last Friday, the School community came together to remember the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus. The ‘Story of the Cross’ is a wonderful tradition at Saints Girls, being celebrated from the Sisters’ Chapel at our old Kermode Street School to now, our School Chapel here at Stonyfell. It is a highlight for many as it provides an amazing space to stop and reflect upon the love of God.

The Story of the Cross is a moving piece of music that takes us on the journey from Jesus’ trial to his death. Played by the School Orchestra, led by the Chamber Choir and directed by Sally Rounsevell with Mark Joyner on organ, the attendees sing their way through this story, reaching its climax:

“Lead me on year by year,
Safe to the end,
Jesus, my Lord, my Life,
King and Friend.”

This service reminds us of one of the most significant events on the Christian calendar. On Good Friday, we remember and give thanks to God for his sacrifice of sending his one and only Son to stand in our place. On the cross, Jesus provides us with a way to heal our relationship with God. Yet, at the same time, we look forward to the joy of Easter Sunday, where Jesus’ resurrection displays his power over death.

I wish you all a joyous Easter full of God’s love and grace.

A Message From Our Head Prefect

It has been a great Term 1! We started the year strongly with Swimming Carnival, where it was fantastic to see everyone swimming their hearts out. It was a record-breaking day and a special mention must go to Selwyn House for winning the overall shield. This was followed by the highly anticipated Choral Night, held at Influencers Church in Paradise. This occasion was extra special this year, not only because it was the Year 12s’ last Choral Night, but also because it was the first time both the Year 7 and 8 girls had ever participated. All performances came together on the night and every House delivered a spectacular show!

Today, to finish off the term, the Middle and Senior School girls participated in Summer Interhouse. This is a great chance to experience healthy competition within the House system and to build close relationships with girls between year levels. It was amazing to see everyone either participating and cheering very loudly.

This term, the Prefect Team’s initiative encouraged the girls to Be Bold and Get Involved at every opportunity. Being Term 1, the girls had numerous opportunities to be bold and get involved in activities or events that they wouldn’t normally try, or signing up for clubs or co-curricular activities that they have always wanted to be involved in. It was great to see students from all year levels embracing the challenge and pushing the limits of their comfort zones. In the terms to come, the Prefect Team will continue to promote the idea of being bold; however, we will shift where this applies – stay tuned!

It has been a busy term so I wish you all a very relaxing break in readiness for an even better Term 2! Happy Easter!

Saskia Jonats

Samantha’s Keys to Piano Success

Being honoured for piano at the recent Australian Music Examinations Board graduation award ceremony was a huge milestone for me and my journey in music. I am extremely passionate about music and I love practising and performing.

My piano teacher Monika Laczofy OAM attended the ceremony to see my achievement which is what I love about her. I met many friends at this event and I enjoyed supporting other people who were also there. I am very proud to be a Saints Girl! I love the School and its outstanding Music program which has wonderful music tutors such has Ms Hilary Kleinig as the Strings Coordinator, Ms Natalie Maegraith and Ms R from whom I receive an immense amount of support.

I play the violin as my second instrument which I really adore. Ensembles that I am in are Senior Strings, Extension Strings and Intermediate Strings. Playing a string instrument is something that requires teamwork and cooperation throughout the group. From playing in these ensembles, I learnt how to support and cooperate with other people and make lots of music friends.

This year, I am proud to be a Music Captain for the Junior School!

Warm Reception for Beloved Bilbies

Our Reception EAL/D (English as an Additional Language/Dialect) class has been learning about THRASS phonemes. As a vehicle for learning, we have explored native Australian animals.

Students have gained success through puppetry conversations, where we have focused on adjectives to describe animal attributes.

We have read the story Hunwick’s Egg and have learnt that bilbies have:
– Long pink ears
– A pointy nose
– Small front feet
– A long tail
– Sharp claws
– Fluffy grey fur

The bilby is a common symbol of Easter in Australia. We have learnt that bilbies are endangered. They live in burrows, they are nocturnal and they have good night vision.

As these images highlight, our Reception EAL/D girls have thrived in their oral language development through participating and demonstrating their understanding of the bilby.

Brilliant Buddies Lead the Way

This week, the girls from 6KIB visited their buddy Reception class 0MKA to make Easter baskets. They thoroughly enjoy spending time with their buddies throughout the school year. It’s a wonderful leadership activity for the Year 6 students to mentor the younger students and a great opportunity for the Receptions to build connections with older role models in the School.

Food for Thought in Year 8 Japanese

In Japanese class this term, we have been learning about school life including what Japanese students eat for lunch. As part of this unit, our class made onigiri this week. Onigiri is a Japanese dish made of white rice and is normally triangle-shaped and wrapped with nori, or grilled seaweed. Many mothers in Japan make onigiri for their children to take to school, and some can be quite creative; for example, making cute animals moulded from the rice.

The process was quite tricky, as the rice we used was very sticky and fell apart quite easily if we didn’t pack it hard enough. It was also very fun using the basic tools to make rice balls such as cutters to shape the rice. I hope all the Japanese students out there will get to try this!

COVID Measures

Please note the following information regarding our continued COVID response.

The School has a QR code tracing system to facilitate the safe return of parents on site, in line with wider government measures. Parents entering the campus to drop off or collect their children need to scan the QR code provided each time. Open A: Saints 1 v Marryatville 5
Open B: Saints 3 v SAC 5
Middle A: Saints 3 v Wilderness 2
Middle B: Saints 3 v Mercedes 1
Middle C: Saints 1 v Mercedes 2

The highlight of the weekend at Touch, was undoubtedly the Middle A team taking home a 1st place pennant after a dramatic win against top of the ladder Wilderness. Our girls had played Wilderness twice already this season, losing both matches 4 – 1, so knew that they were in for a difficult final. Despite recognising this challenge, our girls went into the game with a positive mindset and hardly put a foot wrong, storming to a 3 – 0 lead. As the game progressed, Wilderness continued to attack and pull themselves back into the game, making the score 3 – 2. The girls refocused, upped their energy, communication and defensive organisation to see the game out in style. They now look forward to knockouts and continuing their hard work and success into the winter season.

SSSSA ATHLETICS

On Wednesday 31 March, Saints took a competitive team to the SSSSA Athletics A1 grade at SA Athletics Stadium. Our girls performed admirably on the day, trying their upmost for every point and encouraging team mates throughout. Overall, our squad finished in 2nd place, a close 29 points behind Immanuel College and equalling our best ever finish. There were several fantastic individual results on the day, including medal finishes and personal bests which will be recognised in Term 2. However, notably, there was also one record broken, as Charlotte McAuliffe completed the 14-year-olds 400m in a fantastic time of 58.52 seconds!

EAST ADELAIDE SAPSASA SWIMMING

Congratulations to Lauren D (50m Backstroke) and Inge R (50m Fly) who placed 6th and 3rd respectively at the recent SAPSASA Metro Swimming Championships. Alongside Caitlyn Sam-Ling and Meg Paul whose relay teams took home Silver, and Stella Spalvins whose relay team took home Bronze, the girls contributed to a fantastic result for East Adelaide who won the overall Metro Division 1 Championship.
