From Our Principal

juliashea_web-200x300-200x300

Since the start of 2020, we have navigated our way through five COVID-effected school semesters, and without a doubt, this has been the most challenging of all five. The staggered start to the School year was tricky for new girls and staff in particular as they tried to establish relationships online with those they had yet to meet in person. And as the girls returned, COVID cases across the State hit a peak, leading to high rates of absenteeism for both staff and students. It’s very hard to plan when you don’t know who will be turning up! With the easing of restrictions, particularly the removal of the requirement for asymptomatic close contacts to isolate, we now find ourselves in the ‘new normal’. It brings with it new pressures and patterns of behaviour, with the days of soldiering on through the sniffles long gone. As the call to ‘pivot’ constantly reverberated through the media, our amazing staff adapted, reassessed and adapted again. I hope you will indulge me for a paragraph or two as I publicly acknowledge the wonderful team here at the School.

Our teachers have been magnificent, stepping in to cover the classes of an absent colleague at just a minute’s notice, assisting a larger than normal group of girls to catch up on work following their absence from School and taking the time to support those students who have found the pressures of the past semester somewhat overwhelming.

The non-teaching staff have played a crucial role. There was a significant administrative burden placed on the School, given the reporting requirements introduced by SA Health. Our IT team and Front Office staff have been brilliant and continue to modify reports as the directives change. Our Registered Nurses have been front and centre, maintaining a sense of calm whilst assisting an ever increasing number of girls with the care and professionalism for which they are renowned. Our bus drivers have altered routes daily, our Property Services team has ensured a steady delivery of masks and RATs to keep us safe, and our administrative gurus have juggled staffing, room allocations, co-curricular changes, the calendar of events and more, all with smiles on their faces.

I’m certainly not suggesting that we’ve got it right all of the time, but I’m fortunate to work with an amazing team of people who have worked incredibly hard to manoeuvre their way through an extraordinary situation. Every single member of staff has played a vital role and I offer them my sincere thanks. I hope that they, and you, enjoy a wonderful break and we look forward to welcoming the girls back for Term 3 on Tuesday 26 July.

Shark Tank eSchool Champions

Congratulations to Stage 1 Business Innovation students Emily Whittaker and Lydia Tolley on winning 1st place at Shark Tank eSchool!

Shark Tank eSchool is a national school-based program, modelled on the TV show ‘Shark Tank’. Students are tasked with identifying a problem and developing a solution. Then they turn their solution into a desirable, feasible, and viable business before pitching it to ‘sharks’ (or judges).

Emily and Lydia developed the company, ‘Happy Teeth’. Their product is a silicon cap that clips onto the brackets of braces to prevent cutting and irritation of the cheeks. Many people who have or have had braces can relate to this problem, and the silicon caps are a unique and well-developed solution.

The girls made it to the final round in the competition where they then placed 1st in the General category! Congratulations to Emily and Lydia on their excellent achievement.

Science Olympiad Trailblazer

Last week, I travelled to Canberra with my parents to attend the 2022 Olympiad Blazer Ceremony, where the Australian teams for the International Science, Maths and Informatics Olympiads were officially announced. I was very excited to be selected as part of a four-person team to represent Australia at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

The IBO is a competition for high school students that consists of both a theoretical and practical exam, and includes topics such as animal and plant physiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, ecology and microbiology. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns, Australia and several other countries could not participate in the IBO this year as it is being held in Armenia. Instead, I will be participating in the Asian Science Camp this month with the rest of my IBO teammates, which I’m really looking forward to.

As part of the selection process for the IBO team, I participated in the Australian Science Olympiads Summer School and April Training Camp, which was held in Canberra. I learned so much during these camps, and I also made some incredible friends along the way. There were theory and practical exams at the end of both camps, and while the exams were quite stressful, I had a fun time challenging myself and just doing the best that I could.

I’ve been involved in the Science Olympiads program since Year 10, and since then, I’ve participated in the International Physics Olympiad and many other training camps. I highly recommend the Olympiads to everyone who is interested in science – it’s an amazing opportunity and an experience that you’ll never forget. I’m so grateful to my teachers, my School and the tutors from the Biology Olympiad for all their support in my Olympiad journey.

Ethics Students Speak Out

The Year 6 Ethics girls recently took part in an online competition against schools from all over Australia and New Zealand, tackling issues such as war, animal testing and refugees. Well done to both teams on their fantastic results, with 1st and 6th places!

Working collaboratively in teams of five, the girls incorporated critical thinking and creativity to come up with well-structured and creative solutions, whilst building on suggestions made by the other teams.

During Week 1 of Term 3, the Senior Ethics team will be participating in the National competition online. Good luck seniors!

Our ELC Hat Ceremony – A Treasured Tradition

A treasured tradition for our ELC girls entering Reception or Mid-Year Reception at St Peter’s Girls’ School is the Hat Ceremony. They are formally welcomed into the School community at a special Assembly where they are presented with their School hat and bag by Head of Junior School Suzanne Haddy and the Prefects. When communicating with parents and families of children involved, they emphasise the sense of community and belonging that this tradition creates.

On Monday, we were thrilled to share this special moment with our newest Saints Girls, and as you can see in the video, they were beaming with pride. We wish all of them a wonderful start to school next term and look forward to hearing more about their continued journey at St Peter’s Girls.

Reception Transition Program

It is vital that the transition process into school provides ample time and experiences for children to become familiar with their new environment and teachers. A successful transition allows our youngest learners to feel confident and comfortable as they begin school, and in the long-term provides competency and courage for future transitions.

Girls entering Reception or Mid-Year Reception from our ELC spend months in the lead up experiencing and exploring our School facilities and becoming acquainted with Junior School staff.

Music for Peace Strings Concert

On Monday night, our String musicians took to the Arts Centre stage to present Music for Peace. The concert featured Karl Jenkin’s magnificent work ‘Benedictus’ from his Mass for Peace which was played beautifully by our Senior Strings. Extension Strings presented ‘Water Lily’, a symbol of peace, hope and rebirth, followed by a stunning piece, ‘More Hearts than Mine’, sung by Daisy Kennett and accompanied by Extension Strings. Both Intermediate and Junior Strings held their own, presenting at a very high standard for this level of their musical development.

Our guest artist Zhao Liang wowed the audience on the Chinese Harp or Gu-Zheng with her own composition ‘Small Hearts Find Each Other’ accompanied by Hilary Kleinig, and students Caitlin Middelberg and Jasmin Baker.

Thanks go to our accompanist Won Jung Lee, Sue Mears, Ethan Hurn and Robyn Habel, as well as directors Hilary Kleinig, Tommy Ng and Georgina Price.

Year 4 Students Dive into Politics

This week, the girls from 4OCO and 4RRI visited the Mayor of Burnside, former staff member and Old Scholar Anne Monceaux (nee Harrington, Kennion 1966) in her parlour and the Council Chambers to learn about local government.

In the Mayor’s Parlour, they heard about the first Mayor, Margaret Bond, and what Mayor Monceaux first did when she became Mayor which was to put in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

In the Council Chambers, the girls learned that the crest of Burnside represents the Penfolds winery, olive oil and the old toll gate, along with the piping shrike State emblem. Other things they discovered were that meetings are held every Tuesday but not during December and January, and that the Councillors press a button to talk and can only speak for three minutes. The Mayor’s favourite thing about being Mayor is the success she has had, and the most frustrating thing is when she can’t talk during a debate!

During the outing, the girls also visited the Town Hall to do waste management, sorting cards into mini bins in as little time as possible.

The Year 4s would surely agree that this was an excellent excursion that helped them to understand local government even more.

Farm Fun for Year 1 Explorers

In connection with their central idea that ‘Food can go through stages of production to meet people’s needs’, the Year 1 students visited Urrbrae Agricultural High School where they were guided through the Trails Farm Tour by the school’s Year 10 students.

This was a unique opportunity for them to explore a working farm in Adelaide. What a fabulous day of learning and fun!

Here’s what some of the girls thought:

Enterprising Minds Host Futures Market

Our fantastic Futures Program continues to go from strength to strength, following the success of our recent Market Day. This year’s theme for our businesses is ‘PLAY’. The market stalls were exclusively offered to the Junior School cohort in a new lunchtime format.

Unique to our Middle School, the Futures Program exposes students to the concept of Entrepreneurship. With advice from industry mentors, girls create mini-companies to develop products or services, often to help solve a real-world problem. Most of the funds raised will go towards the House Charities and a celebration event for our young entrepreneurs.

Young Scientists Help Bear Bare the Elements

Our Year 2 classes have been immersing themselves in discovery lessons as part of the School’s STEM program.  With ‘Little Teddy’ planning to move the woods, the Year 2 girls created waterproof coverings to keep him warm and dry. They hypothesised and tested a range of materials to see whether they were waterproof and chose materials based on their findings. They then designed their waterproof covering for Little Teddy, measuring and refining along the way.

Finally, it was testing day! Whilst Little Teddy did get a little wet, the girls learnt a lot about the design process using scientific findings as a starting point. And Little Teddy has decided to come and live with us instead!

Building Bonds at Teddy Bear’s Picnic

During lunchtime on Wednesday, the Reception, Year 1 and Year 12 students all gathered together for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic! As part of our Term 2 Prefect initiative, ‘Not Saints, but Sisters’, we have been trying to promote the importance of inclusivity and create stronger bonds between year levels.

The Year 12 students invited the younger girls to bring their favourite cuddly toys and their lunch for an enjoyable picnic in the School Gym. The girls all had a wonderful time and were treated with some special teddy bear cupcakes! It was great seeing them get out of their comfort zone and be brave to chat with the older girls. This was an excellent experience to create friends and try something new for the younger girls and the older girls too!

Year 11 Artists Unearth Clay Creativity

This week, the Year 11 Visual Arts students attended Urth Clay Studio at the Burnside Arts and Craft Centre in Hubbe Court. Urth Clay is a community-based studio that offers clay workshops, giving visitors the opportunity to slow down and experience the therapeutic benefits that come with working with clay.

The girls were taken through the process of working on a pottery wheel, which they found challenging but very enjoyable. They also took the opportunity to finalise the hand-built elements of their final pieces, inspired by the theme of ‘Botanical’, where they were able to discuss their projects with the studio teachers and listen to their valuable advice.

New Student Libraries Initiatives Club Magazine: SLIC reViews

Introducing the new Student Libraries Initiatives Club magazine: SLIC reViews.

One approach to knowing what to read next is to access reviews written to promote new and interesting books. The SLIC girls often make recommendations based on reviews they access on a regular basis. Motivated by other people’s reviews, the girls have commenced a new project which enables them to share their most recent reads or favourite titles. Our first issue is all about fantasy books, including contributions from Year 10 students, staff and an Old Scholar.

COVID-19 Information

SA Health has advised that asymptomatic COVID-19 close contacts no longer need to quarantine. Therefore, asymptomatic children and students can attend school or ELC despite being a close contact, provided they undertake 5 RATs over the subsequent 7 days and receive negative results.

Please also be reminded of these vital requirements:

Should your child develop any symptoms, even mild ones, they must not attend school or ELC and should be tested for COVID-19. They require a PCR test with receipt of a negative result and resolution of symptoms before return to school/ELC can be considered. Students who have previously tested positive and have completed isolation in the past 12 weeks do not need to undertake testing.

If your child tests positive to COVID-19, notify us immediately. Please also advise the type of test (RAT/PCR), the date your child’s test was taken and the date symptoms started (if no symptoms, note ‘asymptomatic’).

Please notify us via email or text:

Email: attendance@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au
Text: 0428 601 957 (save to phone contacts as SPGS)

If you need to notify us over the phone, please call the Front Office on 8334 2200.

Please note that if your child is too sick to attend school, they are therefore also too sick to be working remotely from home.

AEROBICS

Last weekend, the Saints’ Aerobics girls competed in the Federation of International Sport Aerobics and Fitness (FISAF) State Championships. We again had brilliant results in a very competitive year, with 3 teams qualifying for the FISAF National Championships in September!

Congratulations to The Royals who placed 5th and The Tinkerbells who came 2nd in the Secondary Pre-Choreographed Teams Years 7 – 9 (Novice) division. The girls in The Tinkerbells are ecstatic to have qualified for the National Championships, with it being a first for many of them.

Congratulations to The Stars and Freaky Friday who placed 2nd and 1st respectively in the Secondary Pre-Choreographed Teams Years 7 – 12 (Advanced) division. Both teams have proudly qualified for Nationals in a strong division.

I was unable to make the State Championships, so I asked a few of the senior girls how they felt about Saturday’s contest:

‘The Stars’ competed against some tough competition and managed to place 2nd out of some amazing teams. This means we have qualified for Nationals and will hopefully not miss out on the trip like last year due to COVID. A highlight from State Championships would have to be watching all the other teams. Everyone sat at the front of the audience and were cheering each other on, it was just a great atmosphere. – Alyssa Walpole (Year 9)

The highlight for me was cheering on the younger girls and watching everyone perform. We were all very supportive of each other and had a great time together whilst giving it our best go. – Lara Maione (Year 9)

Again, well done to all the girls who competed, I can’t wait to hear how you go at the FISAF National Championships. – Maddi Harmer (Captain)

Great work by our strong defensive players, especially Winnie and Leah who worked well to stop the strikers breaking through to their attacking circle. It was great to see the girls making good use of transfers. Amazing speed was displayed by Phoebe in our attacking 25, working the ball into the circle. A special mention to Amelia who scored from a very fast and skilful tomahawk! Thank you to the girls and our coaches Liv and Tash for a great first term of hockey in the 2022 season. – Bridgette Leach (Captain)

So far, we have played against Immanuel, Scotch, Pembroke and Concordia. Unfortunately, we were defeated in our first 3 games, however the scores were close, only losing to Immanuel by 12, Scotch by 13 and to Pembroke by 2 goals. JUNIOR INTERHOUSE NETBALL

Adelaide SchoolsThis was the final week of Year 5 and 6 Junior Netball for the year, with Monday seeing the hotly contested Junior Interhouse Netball. We were incredibly proud of all the girls, who played the game in the right spirit and rotated positions to ensure everyone had time on court.

In the end, it came down to the last game between Kilburn and Patteson. Both were undefeated going into the last round which Kilburn won to take out the Interhouse Shield.

Thank you to coaches Cimone, Sadie, Karen, Neil, Lara, Sarah and Jess, and to scorers and umpires Laurie, Charlotte, Issy, Ellie, Beverley and Soph. A real team effort to make such an event happen!

Farewell from Our Director of Teaching and Learning

Adelaide SchoolsI was talking to a Year 10 student last week and she was telling me about her favourite subject. When I enquired as to why it was her favourite, she reflected that it was because the focus was on learning new things rather than assessment tasks. Her curiosity and thirst for new knowledge were being satisfied without the pressure of imminent assignments and stressing about ‘what to write to get an A grade’. Which is not to say that there is no assessment on this particular course; quite the contrary in fact. And neither am I suggesting that aiming for A grades is not a noble pursuit. But crucially, the emphasis in the Year 10 subject in question has been shifted just subtly: the assessment tasks are there to serve the interesting content rather than the other way round. To an extent, this reflects the fact that Year 10 doesn’t quite carry the same weight and pressure of the final two years of school. But it also raises some interesting questions about learning – why we do it, how we do it and what it is for.

All schools face the challenge of balancing love of learning and learning for its own sake with the need to assess students and the need to deliver successful outcomes in programs such as SACE and IB. This balance can be particularly tricky in schools like ours where expectations are high and students can sometimes feel the pressure to perform. We recognise that it is imperative for learning to be fun, to inspire, to stimulate and to engender further curiosity about the world. Actually wanting to learn is always at least half the battle. So, whilst understanding assignment details and accessing examples of top-grade work are important parts of the assessment process, the enjoyment of the formative learning phase is vitally important too. We ask our middle and senior students via feedback surveys how well we engage them in class, and this continues to be a key area of focus for us moving forwards.

As I come to the end of my four and a half years at Saints Girls, I am perhaps inevitably reflecting on my time here and on the particular qualities of the School. A good example of what makes it a special place came two weeks ago when the Stage 2 SACE students stayed behind over three evenings to tackle some practice exam questions. Not only did the students accept this additional requirement, they tackled the tasks intently and without fuss and a proffered cheerful ‘thank you’ as they left the classrooms at 6pm. The maturity, warmth, diligence and politeness of our students never ceases to impress.

Remember – when you are chatting with your daughters over dinner, ask them what they learned at school rather than what grades they received! And finally, best wishes for the future to all in the Saints Girls’ community.

Director of Teaching and Learning

Esperanza Strikes Again

In addition to their recent win at Generations in Jazz, we are thrilled to announce that vocal ensemble Esperanza is among only a dozen finalists nationwide to have placed in the Musica Viva event ‘Strike a Chord’.

119 ensembles participated, so congratulations to Esperanza for making it this far which is truly an achievement in itself. This very prestigious, classical competition is designed to inspire students who are performing chamber music at a very high level, many being of prodigious talent.

The girls were adjudicated by concert pianist Amir Farid, and concert violinist and professional chamber musician Helen Ayres. The Grand Final will take place on Saturday 27 August at the Melbourne Recital Centre where the finalists will perform to the in-house audience and via live stream to viewers across the nation. The winners will be announced live on stage by the jury.

Here is some of what the jury had to say about Esperanza’s classical performance:

‘This was a beautifully crafted and expressive performance of a moving work. Your group achieved a very fine vocal blend, and diction was admirable throughout. I loved the wonderful sense of cohesion and group collegiality in this ensemble. Well done on a beautiful performance.’

All the best for the Grand Final girls!

Pizza, Pyjamas and All That Jazz!

This year due to COVID, Generations in Jazz was held in an online format to allow students to submit video entries of their bands and choirs in action. As a way of celebrating the milestones achieved by Stage Band and Esperanza in entering this event, we held a Pizza and Pyjama Party last Thursday night where we watched the live-streamed concert together.

A highlight of GIJ is the amazing concerts featuring international artists who provide immense inspiration to the students. This year, a concert was live-streamed featuring James Morrison, Darren Percival (from ‘The Voice’), David Williams (jazz didgeridoo performer), ‘The Real Group’ from Sweden, The John Clayton Jazz Orchestra from Los Angeles, the ‘GIJ Alumni Big Band,’ previous scholarship winners including our current Musician in Residence David Goodwin, and many other wonderful performers.

Here are a few reflections from the girls:

‘Although we weren’t able to travel to Mount Gambier this year, the girls had an amazing night! The concert included some impressive pieces from composers and performers in the GIJ community. Great job to the girls in Stage Band for achieving 2nd in their division and a special shoutout to Esperanza for placing 1st!’ Caitlin Middelberg, Year 12 (Music Captain)

‘I am extremely proud of the girls for all their efforts and this amazing achievement in such a short amount of time!’  Sophie Norman, Year 12 (Head Chorister)

‘Despite not being able to perform at Mount Gambier, being announced 1st in the Open Ensemble category for Esperanza was just as rewarding. Watching so many amazing jazz artists perform from Sweden, Los Angeles and right here in South Australia was the best way to celebrate.’ – Samantha Keough, Year 11

‘The GIJ online experience was a wonderful opportunity to be exposed to some of Australia’s best jazz musicians. Winning the Open Ensemble category as a member of Esepranza was extremely rewarding as our result reflected weeks of hard work.’ – Emma Pool, Year 11

This week, we were delighted to receive our feedback from international adjudicator Kerry Marsh (for Esperanza), and local musician and jazz prodigy Thomas Voss (for Stage Band, pictured below):

‘Wow…so many corners of this are just top notch! Sari, you definitely know what you are doing my friend…Phenomenal. Such excellence on the stage. I have chills…This is the best I’ve ever heard this chart, by far. Soloist (Samantha Keough), again, you’re navigating your vocal registers with real skill and musicality. Ooh…The dynamic shading is so good. Kind of can’t believe all of this my friends. Huge, huge thanks for your phenomenal work! Basically you are all pros!’ – Kerry Marsh (Colorado, USA)

‘Rockin’ intro! Sounded and felt great. Excellent trombone solo. Great balance intonation and dynamics throughout. Excellent articulations and energy in the shout chorus. Overall, an excellent performance.’ – Thomas Voss (South Australia)

A huge congratulations to all of our girls!

Last night, 16 talented musicians selected from our Piano Eisteddfod proudly performed at our annual Piano Recital.

The girls from Reception to Year 8 enjoyed their moment in the spotlight, playing with confidence and poise. They were also treated to some musical inspiration from our guest artist, the School’s Musician in Residence David Goodwin.

Terrific effort by all girls who performed in these events. Here are some highlights from last night:

On Monday night, the SACE Stage 1 Drama students presented Eyes to the Floor by Australian playwright Alana Valentine. The story chronicles the experiences of teenage girls sent to the Hay Girls Home during the 1960s where they endured brutal, punitive treatment. Our version of this thought-provoking production combined movement, poetry, music, video and chorus work to highlight the inner turmoil of the young inmates.

The Drama students were creatively involved in all aspects of the production, from the choreography and direction to set design, costumes and lighting. I am so proud of the way the students embraced the challenging subject matter with such maturity, compassion and creativity. A spectacular performance that wowed the audience – well done to all involved!

Year 2 Scientists Filtering Knowledge

As part of the ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit of inquiry, the Year 2 classes have been investigating the earth’s resources and discovering why water is a precious resource. They have learned that many people around the world do not have access to clean water.

The Year 2 scientists worked with Sophie, our Scientist in Residence, to make water filtration systems. They conducted an experiment using cotton wool, layers of charcoal and gravel to make and test their water filters. They were astounded that such dirty water could be cleaned through their filters!

It was a stellar evening at the Adelaide Convention Centre where guests enjoyed terrific company, premium hospitality and sensational live entertainment courtesy of corporate party band ‘The Cast’.

A highlight was the drawing of our Star Struck Major Lottery. Congratulations to the lucky winner, Darren Roberts, who is the proud new owner of a Toyota Yaris Ascent Sport, with the added bonus of a personalised car park at St Peter’s Girls’ School in 2023.

Our sincere gratitude to Northpoint Toyota and the Goldsmith family for supporting this lottery, and thank you again to all who joined us on the night.

Nude Food Tuesdays

The Environment Club is encouraging all Saints Girls to minimise their plastic usage, especially in the packaging of their recess and lunch. Many of us pack our recess and lunch in zip lock bags and cling wrap. But the issue with this is that we use these once and then toss them into the bin. These plastics are not biodegradable, and over many years will simply break down into microplastics contaminating our water sources and even our food.

So, to decrease this impact, the Environment Club is inviting everyone to participate in Nude Food Tuesdays. On this day, we ask that students’ lunch and recess are not packaged in single use plastic and are instead packed in other items such as containers, beeswax wraps or even multi-use silicon bags.

If everyone participates, the amount of plastic which the School contributes to landfill will decrease greatly, thus benefitting our environment. You can even do this every day if you are extra keen to help our environment!

Car Park Courtesy

The School has again received complaints about traffic blocking Stonyfell Road for lengthy periods during drop-off and pick-up. If the car park is full and you are unable to enter, circle the block until it is clear to enter, find a park elsewhere or, where age-appropriate, meet your daughter in a surrounding street. Unless special circumstances apply, parents of girls in Years 2 to 12 should not enter the car park to collect their daughters prior to 3.30pm. Parents of girls in Reception and Year 1 have exclusive use of the pick-up zone prior to this time for safety and traffic reasons.

Please also refrain from turning right into or out of the car park at peak times, and please do not queue in the car park’s lanes as this often prevents drivers who are legally parked from exiting.

We have also received complaints about cars being parked too close to or in front of driveways, or across from other vehicles in surrounding streets, making it extremely difficult for residents and other road users to navigate.

We ask all community members to please show consideration for others; thank you for your cooperation.

Celebrations for Generations in Jazz Performers

Last night, Esperanza and Stage Band eagerly gathered to watch the Generations in Jazz livestream concert and award announcements which were broadcast in Los Angeles, Sweden and Australia. We are absolutely delighted and thrilled to share that Esperanza placed 1st in the Open Vocal Division, while Stage Band were Runners Up in Division 4! And a special shoutout to Matilda Chu who was named in the Superband as Lead Trombonist.

As Esperanza had entered into one of the most hotly-contested sections in this national competition, a live cross from Los Angeles and Mt Gambier (the home of Generations in Jazz) was made to Esperanza where the girls were congratulated by Kerry Marsh, one of our all-time favourite arrangers, Naomi Crellin from the ARIA award-winning group ‘The Idea of North’ and jazz legend James Morrison.

I am enormously proud of the achievements of all our girls. They are a living example of determination and risk-taking, and their commitment to their craft is above and beyond.

From Our Deputy Principal /
Head of Senior School

juliashea_web-200x300-200x300

If you are a parent of a Year 10 or 11 student, no doubt you have heard all about the upcoming exams. Perhaps you’ve even been told by your daughter that she can’t be interrupted each night and all household jobs are off the table. No matter what age or year level your daughter might be in, assessment time can be a stressful experience for both students and their families.

The anxiety and stress that comes with exams and tests traditionally relates to the perceived difficulty of the task and the students’ perceived ability to cope. It is important then that our girls focus on the preparation for their exams just as much as they focus on the content. Learning how best to study is just as important as learning what to study.

Included in the #EMPOWHER curriculum are lessons and time set aside to help our girls learn about learning. Students have the opportunity to investigate and trial different study techniques as they build towards exams. Following exams, we have also introduced an opportunity for the girls to reflect on their preparations. With the experience fresh in their minds, they will be able to reflect on what worked well and what could be altered for next time.

Exam preparation and learning how you learn best can be trial and error. Students are encouraged to prepare a study timetable. Allowing enough time in the lead up to exams prevents rushing and cramming at the end. Cross-checking topics against concepts learnt can also help consolidate learning. Creating study cards, summary notes or mind maps are also useful tools to assist students when revising. Often students are reminded that simply reading over notes won’t help them learn information; instead, the girls should be reading information, writing it, seeing it, saying it, and finally, applying it. This will help with information retention and the ability to apply it in test settings.

As you can see, our girls are given a multitude of tips and advice to help them prepare; however, sometimes the families supporting a teenager during exam times need just as much support. I would encourage families to simply listen when their daughter is frustrated, upset or overwhelmed by the process. More often than not, she doesn’t want you to fix the problem, she just wants someone to listen to her. Stand your ground; your daughter might be going through a time of stress, but that doesn’t mean the world revolves around them – they still have a role to play in their household. Finally, you may wish to have chocolate on hand, as when all else fails, chocolate can have its place.

Good luck to all students (and their families!) preparing for exams. Remember, they are simply a snapshot of learning so far.

Lauren Sutton
Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School

Keys to Confidence at Piano Eisteddfod

More than 70 Saints’ musicians converged upon the Music Room yesterday to present solo performances in front of parents and other students. While it was a daunting experience for some, the girls demonstrated excellent risk-taking skills as they delivered their individual works.

This was also an opportunity to perform on our beautiful grand piano which was donated by the Friends of The Arts in honour of Old Scholar Fiona Hale (nee Burton, Patteson 1986), who was a staunch advocate of our Music Program.

The students were adjudicated by piano specialists Kendall Latzell and Sari Noble, and were provided with encouraging feedback and presented with participation certificates. Several students from each age group were selected to present at the Piano Recital next Thursday 23 June at 6pm in the Music Room. This year, our recital will feature our Artist in Residence David Goodwin, who will no doubt inspire our young pianists onto bigger and better things! The recital is free and entry is by general admission.

Stonyfell Rocks at Lunchtime Concert!

On Wednesday, the Saints Rock Band and Guitar Ensemble put on a fantastic lunchtime concert for students and staff. It opened with a performance by the Guitar Ensemble, consisting of five girls in Years 8 – 11. They performed pieces in 3 and 4 parts including the popular hit ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams and the timeless ‘Amazing Grace’.

The Rock Band then took to the stage with eight performers on drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, strings, saxophone and vocals. They played popular songs including the super-catchy ‘At My Worst’ by Pink Sweat$, and the powerful Adele hit ‘Skyfall’ featuring a beautiful string arrangement and outstanding vocals by Helen Zhang.

The bands were cheered on by a very enthusiastic audience, including an ELC class who seemed quite awestruck by the talent of the girls! This is the first performance of the year for Rock Band and Guitar Ensemble, and we look forward to sharing much more!

Saints (43) v Pulteney (9)
Saints (20) v Burnside (18)

Saints Girls played fantastically in the 1st round of knockouts with 2 solid wins to start the day, defending well and being clinical in attack. The final game against Burnside Primary School was a lot closer, however Saints managed to sneak home by two goals to progress to the next round.

South Australian da Vinci Decathlon 2022

As ever, da Vinci Decathlon week was full of feverish activity, creativity and intellectual dexterity. With nearly 600 of the State’s brightest and keenest early adolescent minds in one place, that shouldn’t be surprising! What always takes me a little by surprise, however, is the sheer joy and excitement that each day as a whole generates. It really is a delight to see so many students from such a wide range of schools united by the desire to think hard, embrace challenge and test themselves against tasks and questions used in all states and territories. Throw in a healthy bit of inter-school rivalry and a decent pizza lunch, and you have all the ingredients for a magical event.

The da Vinci Decathlon began in 2005 as an exciting offshoot of the very successful da Vinci Program for gifted and talented students at Knox Grammar School in Sydney. This is our 10th year hosting this prestigious event, and interest from around the State continues to grow each year. The Decathlon is designed to celebrate the academic gifts of Australian youth by providing a stimulating and challenging competition run in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. It is named after Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519), one of the world’s greatest thinkers and scholars. His career spanned an enormous range of disciplines including art, architecture, poetry, anatomy, hydrodynamics, mechanical and military engineering, mathematics and astronomy. Crucially, he demonstrated a superior ability to perceive the interconnected nature of knowledge, and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to uncover the unknown.

Thus, the competition places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills, problem-solving and creativity. Students working collaboratively in teams are highly stimulated by competing in tasks across disciplines such as Engineering, Mathematics, Ideation, Code Breaking, Drama, Art and Poetry, Science and English. There is a need, therefore, for a well-balanced team with students whose abilities complement rather than replicate each other.

Thanks must go to Maeghan Stace, Fiona McGregor, Property Services, our Middle School Leaders and Wesley Hiscock for all their hard work in ensuring the event ran as smoothly as ever. Visiting schools are always keen to offer thanks for providing such an outstanding opportunity to their students, which wouldn’t be possible without the work of our team here at Saints Girls. Congratulations also go to Becca Burton-Howard, our da Vinci Decathlon Head Coach/Gifted and Talented Coordinator, and all the staff and students who supported her and our teams this year in the build up to the event.

In the Year 5/6 division, our team started things off spectacularly, overcoming stiff competition from Scotch College, Wilderness School, Pulteney Grammar School and Westminster School to be crowned South Australian da Vinci Decathlon Champions for 2022. With top 3 finishes in 5 of the 10 events, they were clear winners in a field of 22 teams, with the battle for 2nd to 4th as close as we have seen since the event began.

Saints Girls’ fine form continued on Tuesday during the Year 7 event. Our team placed 2nd in Art and Poetry, English and Science, and won the Engineering challenge. As a result, the girls placed 2nd overall, finishing behind Walford Anglican School for Girls by the smallest amount possible.

Finally, our Year 9 entrants mounted a stirring second-half display, winning Engineering and Ideation, and placing 5th in Code Breaking, to finish an impressive 4th overall amongst 24 talented teams.

Our girls will now compete virtually in the National da Vinci Decathlon in Week 9, and we wish them all well as they compete with some of the brightest minds in the nation.

Bravo to our Stage 2 Dance Choreographers on last Thursday’s stunning performance of CREATE.

The girls worked tirelessly to develop their own dance for an assessment piece, choosing a topic to form their choreography around. Each girl was able to select external dancers or use themselves in their dance.

Well done to all involved for your courage, collaboration and creativity!

Reconciliation Week Chapel Service

Last week in our Chapel Service, it was a joy to welcome Bishop Chris McLeod, National Aboriginal Bishop, as part of Reconciliation Week activities at the School.

Bishop Chris spoke about the importance of God loving all people as they are. For him as an Aboriginal man, it is significant that God loves and welcomes him. Bishop Chris also challenged us to both be true to ourselves and to be welcoming of all people, especially First Nations people. To end his time with us, he led us through a prayer for reconciliation.

Year 11 Drama Performance – Eyes to the Floor

The SACE Stage 1 Drama students are proud to present Eyes to the Floor by Australian playwright Alana Valentine.

The play chronicles the experience of teenage girls sent to the Hay Girls Home during the 1960s where they endured brutal, punitive treatment. It highlights the vulnerability of the young inmates in a world where they must find connection with each other to survive. Interwoven with movement, chorus work and poetry, Eyes to the Floor explores a chilling chapter in Australia’s history.

Please join us on Monday 20 June (Week 8) at 6pm in the Arts Centre. Entry is free, and no bookings are required.

Piano Eisteddfod – Next Thursday

Next Thursday 16 June, the Arts Department will hold St Peter’s Girls’ Piano Eisteddfod. It is open to all Junior and Middle School students who play piano. Parents are welcome to attend, and the time of each student’s performance will be communicated to families.

Girls will have the opportunity to perform a piece to a panel of judges, who will critique their performance based on accuracy, technique and musicality for their specific music level. This is a great opportunity for girls to perform in a supportive environment and receive some valuable feedback.

Girls are asked to play one piece that best displays their musicality and technical ability at their own musical level. There will be no minimum or maximum time limit. While the Eisteddfod provides our top piano players with a platform to perform, the aim is to give performers of all levels the opportunity to participate.

A Piano Recital will be held at 6pm on Thursday 23 June. Students will be chosen from the Eisteddfod performers who show confidence and a high level of musicianship. Selected recital students will be notified by the beginning of Week 8.

AEROBICS

With COVID delaying yet another season, our Aerobics girls kept their spirits high and committed to their first competition, FISAF Super Series.

We had amazing results from all teams, with Royals placing 4th and Tinkerbells 2nd in the Secondary Pre-Choreographed Teams Years 7 – 9 (Novice) division. In the Secondary Pre-Choreographed Teams Years 7 – 12 (Advanced), The Stars and Freaky Friday placed 3rd and 2nd respectively. Congratulations girls!

After mentoring our Aerobics teams for more than three years, I have never been prouder of our girls. Not just because of the fantastic results, but because of the sportsmanship and encouragement of everyone at the competition. Every team supported each other while rehearsing and preparing backstage, and cheered each other on during the performances. To add to this, every team’s feedback from the judges included a comment about their energy and smiles, meaning everyone was having fun and enjoying their time on stage. Well done to everyone involved. – Maddi Harmer (Captain)

It is wonderful to see everyone willing to try new things on court. Well done to all! – Yang Yang (Captain)

HOCKEY

Division B: Saints (6) v Scotch B (0)

Our second game back for the 2022 season saw a stunning team effort, where we welcomed Gabby and Claris from Year 6 to the team. Our midfielders and defensive players pushed up to assist our attackers, making good use of transfers. Our goal scorers were Yashika (1), Bridgette (1), Amelia (2) and Phoebe (2). A great finish to the game saw Phoebe deflecting the ball into the goal after the siren from a short corner. Great job everyone, especially for your persistence through the torrential rain! – Bridgette (Captain)

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Recently, the Open Touch squad participated in the State Knockout, where we played in 5 games. Although we faced many experienced players, it was amazing to see how much everyone improved throughout the day and implemented plays we had been practising in trainings.

A highlight was the match against Pembroke as the team combined strong defensive pressure and intensity in attack to guarantee a place in the top 4 after a 5 – 2 win! To finish the day, we faced Golden Grove in the 3/4 final, and after a very close match, we went down by 1 in an extra-time drop off. Finishing in the top 4 was a huge effort which we are all extremely proud of and we look forward to continuing training in preparation for our tour to the Gold Coast later this year. – Ellie (Captain)

eNews – Week 5, Term 2 2022

Issue no. 16Enews-banner

From Our Head of Junior School

Adelaide SchoolsExcellent educators are continually seeking to update and enhance their knowledge, skills and understandings. In fact, I regularly suggest to pre-service teachers that the day they stop wanting to learn is the day they should transition to a new career. For me, learning includes reading widely and researching at length, having a pile of semi-read or half listened-to books on the go, joining webinars, and regularly finding myself in the never-ending rabbit hole of Google.com! Of course, prior to 2020, it also included attendance at good old fashioned face-to-face professional learning events.

As many reading this will understand from your own careers, professional learning opportunities have been somewhat disrupted or reimagined in recent years. While increased access to online learning opportunities has been welcomed, there is something quite special about a group of school leaders coming together in one place, with live keynote speakers, face-to-face collegial and professional conversations, and opportunities to renew acquaintances. For this reason, last weekend, I was very pleased to attend the twice-postponed national IPSHA (Independent Primary School Heads of Australia) conference, convened by the South Australian branch.

With a conference theme of ‘One Child at a Time’, the inclusion of school tours, and a number of excellent and highly regarded local, national and international speakers, these two and a half days gave us all opportunities to stop and reflect, to confirm some thoughts and beliefs, and to challenge others. Covering a broad range of topics within the theme, we were again reminded of the far-reaching breadth of our roles and responsibilities in guiding the educational, wellbeing and co-curricular programs of our schools and the relevance of this for each child.

Presentations encompassed subjects such as a neuroscience perspective of brain development in the early childhood and primary years; children’s mental health and wellbeing; consent education; epigenetics as it relates to personalised health and performance; the importance of fostering creativity and innovation; and, leadership lessons for both students and adults. In this forum of mutual interest and engagement, there was much to take away and ponder over coming weeks and months. Great schools become even greater schools when there is careful and broad consideration of evidenced-based information, and I was glad to add the ideas of some respected thought leaders to my repertoire, without opening an electronic device to do so.

Director of Teaching and Learning Appointment

Adelaide Schools

I am delighted to announce that Kate Morgante will be joining St Peter’s Girls’ School as our new Director of Teaching and Learning at the start of next term.
Kate is the Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning) at Gleeson College in Adelaide’s north-east. She is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic leader and STEM educator, having also spent more than a decade as Gleeson’s STEM Coordinator. With earlier tertiary qualifications in Education and Biomedical Science, Kate is currently completing her Doctorate in Education (University of South Australia), and she co-authors the SACE 1 and 2 Essentials Chemistry workbooks.

Kate is dedicated to supporting the holistic development of all students with both an academic and pastoral focus, making her an outstanding fit for Saints Girls and our vision to inspire women of character and influence.

Our current Director of Teaching and Learning Nigel Scoggins is working on an extensive handover with Kate, and we thank Nigel again for his contribution to Saints Girls and wish him all the best as his family prepares to relocate to Mount Gambier.

Warmest congratulations to Kate on her appointment. We look forward to introducing her to families next term and we hope you will join us in welcoming her to our wonderful community.

Ethics Olympians Set for National Stage

Two teams of Year 11 and 12 students recently competed in the South Australian and Northern Territory Senior Ethics Olympiad. Throughout the day, we participated in four rounds where we explored eight cases by presenting different ethical ideas such as Wholesome Discipline and Anti-Natalism.

After working so hard in trainings, it was great to see how well everyone collaborated to present creative and considered ideas. We were also thrilled to find out that our teams placed 1st and 6th, both incredible efforts out of 18 teams from 11 schools. We look forward to continuing our training as we progress to the National Ethics Olympiad early next term.

Year 9 Forensics Under the Microscope

On Monday, our Year 9 students took part in ‘A Case of Conspiracy’, a forensic science activity run in our Science Centre. They took on the role of a forensic investigator and had to work through 11 stations of evidence to solve the case.

They discovered how forensic evidence is gathered and analysed, and how the results are compiled to provide a detailed picture of the events leading up to a crime, and of the criminal, even when eyewitness accounts are not available. The activity presented an opportunity for the girls to see how the methods and experiments that they are using each day in our laboratories are developed and applied in the real world.

Year 11 Foodies Dish Up Mexican Delights

As part of the Stage 1 Food and Hospitality course, the Year 11 Food class organised a Mexican Street Food stall for the rest of the Year 11 cohort. Inspired by the cultural traditions of Mexican food, the girls decided to make Mexican bowls which included a home-made flat bread, guacamole, tomato salsa, cheese, sour cream and a choice of beef or cauliflower mince. For dessert, we served handmade churros with a chocolate dipping sauce, topped with fresh strawberries.

Our class was very successful in selling the delicious food to the Year 11 students and received plenty of positive feedback. The money raised from our stall is being donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation as we are all very passionate about this cause. We are also very excited to announce that, in Term 4, we will be hosting another food stall with a different theme.

Reconciliation Week in the ELC

As we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures this week and every week, in the ELC, the children have embraced activities including sharing dreamtime stories and baking lemon myrtle scones which we enjoyed with Kaurna Elder Tamaru.

Unfortunately due to the wet weather, we had to postpone tomorrow’s ELC Community Event of Wodli building until next term, but that didn’t stop the children from constructing the Kaurna shelters together across the week.

To us, this is a week where we can make visible our lifelong journey of reconciliation, to acknowledge our ongoing commitment to this space, and to be humbled by the ripple effect we are having on our wider community.

Japanese Class Dazzled by Dots

The Year 10, 11 and 12 Japanese students recently enjoyed an excursion to the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Daiso store and the Katsumoto restaurant.

At the Art Gallery, we visited an exhibition featuring the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, a 93 year old woman from Tokyo who creates vibrant and immersing installations. Her work is very much inspired by the environment and shapes, in particular polka dots, and the installation was spectacular! We also saw another installation by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota which was amazing too. My favourite was the light box room by Yayoi Kusama which was covered with yellow dots and had a light box in the centre with yellow, spotty, lit-up pumpkins inside.

Next, we headed to Katsumoto where we enjoyed a delicious Japanese meal. Finally, we visited Daiso, a Japanese store in the city which has everything from food to stationery. I really enjoyed the excursion, as did the rest of the girls, because we were able to experience a lot of Japanese culture and enjoy the beautiful work of Yayoi Kusama.

FUSION – Performing Arts Collaboration

The hallways at school are buzzing with excitement for the arrival of FUSION! Every second year is the School Musical extravaganza, but this year, after the success of A Chorus Line in 2021, I wanted to offer a small scale but equally as rewarding Performing Arts opportunity to our students, of whom so many are lovers of the stage! In conversation with Sari Noble, we decided to join forces and combine the Stage 1 Music Performance with ensemble dance pieces. Hence the title FUSION was born – a mixture of live music and singing with dance in such a huge variety of styles including ballet, jazz, musical theatre, tap and contemporary.

As Performing Arts teachers, we are so lucky to be able to work with girls who come with different experiences but all love to sing and dance. This is something that truly brings students together, including across the year levels. Being involved in this project has been no easy feat due to the impact of COVID which has made it difficult to rehearse with a full cast. Nevertheless, I am extremely proud of what we have achieved as a team and cannot wait for the girls to perform for a live and enthusiastic audience on Friday 10 June at 7pm in the Arts Centre.

Our wonderful Friends of The Arts will be there serving drinks and snacks, so we would love you to kick off the long weekend by celebrating FUSION. Tickets are available through TryBooking – click here

Piano Eisteddfod – Coming Soon!

On Thursday 16 June in Week 7 of Term 2, the Arts Department will hold St Peter’s Girls’ Piano Eisteddfod.

It is a delight to return to the courts again since the end of last season. Saturday was the first game of this season, and for some girls, it was their very first match in Badminton. It was great to see them applying new skills from training into competitive games. We look forward to watching you progress throughout the season. A big congratulation to all girls who played on Saturday. Out of the 5 teams, 4 secured wins. A special shoutout to the Open A and D2 teams who each won 6-0. Amazing start to the season girls! – Yang Yang (Captain)

HOCKEY

Division B: Saints (5) v Pembroke B (0)
Our Hockey season started off with a win against Pembroke Bs. Unfortunately, following a winless year in 2021, we have moved into the B Division. However, we will be sufficiently challenged over the course of the season due to a smaller squad and are looking forward to the matches ahead.

LACROSSE

U11: Saints (4) vs North Adelaide (4)
The girls had a great game against North Adelaide. Even though it was a tough match, they were able to fight and keep the score even. Everyone played well, and the girls are improving each game! Our goal scorers were Mimi Birmingham (1), Maddie Romeo (2) and Violet Tulloch (1). Well played girls! – Dani (Captain)

Year 6: Saints Blue (27) v Seymour Green (25)
Saints 6 Blue battled it out in a tense game that highlighted the many strengths of the team. Going into the final quarter, we were down by 3 goals and fought back to win the game. All the girls played their hardest against a strong Seymour team. When players were off, it was lovely to hear them supporting their teammates from the sidelines. Stand out players were Jemima Vikor-Lam and Sophie Loan who really worked hard through the mid-court into the goal circle with the support of the other mid-courters. Special mention goes to Maisy Ion who shot some amazing goals from all around the goal circle. Our defenders really took on board instruction and shut down the Seymour attack. All girls contributed to the win and should be very proud of themselves. – Cimone (Coach)

SAPSASA NETBALL

After weeks of challenging tryouts, the following students have been successful in making it through to the final two squads for East Adelaide SAPSASA Netball. With 25% of the squad being made up of Saints Girls, the future of Netball is certainly in safe hands! Congratulations to:

SWIMMING

Following four wins in a row for Saints, Wilderness came back strongly to take home the 2022 IGSSA Swimming Shield. Throughout the day, our girls showed exceptional school spirit, filling every race and giving their all. Unfortunately in the end, a strong Wilderness squad who took out all the Freestyle relays was too much to overcome, with our girls finishing in a respectable 3rd place overall. Well done girls.
