Enews – Week 9, Term 1 2019

Issue no. 9Enews-banner

W9 - Banner

From the Head of Junior School

Suzanne HaddyIn providing a strong, holistic and rigorous education, we spend a good deal of time and effort ensuring there is both great breadth and significant depth in what we offer. And I’m pleased to say that this is exactly what was apparent as I stood back and reflected on some of the happenings and conversations across the Junior School recently.

I was pleasantly amused to hear a little anticipatory “Yay, it’s #EMPOWHER now!” the other day as the girls were moving from one lesson to the next. What better affirmation for our newly-launched Junior School wellbeing program, which is having a very successful first term. Girls are engaging thoughtfully and respectfully with the content and are enjoying opportunities to think about and discuss wellbeing issues that are important and meaningful to them.

Mind Lab continues to stretch and challenge our students’ thinking skills, and they are proudly exclaiming their ‘light-bulb’ moments each time they make a connection between a strategy used in Mind Lab and in another area of learning. Along with noticing these daily transferences, we are also thrilled that 50 of our Year 5 and 6 students deepened their learning through putting themselves forward to compete in the interschool Mind Lab Olympics competition this term.

Providing both breadth and depth in leadership training for our Year 6s continued this week with a two-day leadership workshop. The students investigated aspects of leadership that are particularly relevant to the work they will undertake next term as peer leaders for our Reception to Year 5 students.

The Year 5s have been excitedly, and for some a little nervously, preparing for their tour to Sovereign Hill, where they will become engrossed in 1850s life on the goldfields. What better way to experience both breadth and depth in their learning than this fully immersive experience where girls and teachers step back in time for two days, living and learning as if in an 1850s Victorian gold-mining town, in 1850s style clothing?

These rich, broad experiences are complemented purposely and robustly with explicit approaches to the teaching of literacy and numeracy, with none more important than the teaching of phonics and literacy in the early years of school. With significant talk in the media recently about lowering levels of early phonics acquisition in Australia, it is timely to share the great importance we place on this aspect of our students’ education here at Saints Girls. In fact, because this is of such importance, we have modified aspects of our early phonics teaching to ensure our students have the richest and most rigorous program possible, and you can see more about this in the video attached to this article.

Our students are incredibly fortunate. Their learning experiences are indeed both broad and deep, varied and enjoyable. It’s the cumulative effect of the myriad of experiences such as these that will result in strong, confident, capable women of tomorrow.

Shark Attack Survivor’s Empowering Message

W9 - Paul de Gelder

Shark attack survivor, ex-Navy diver and motivational speaker Paul de Gelder blew our students away this week with a powerful presentation arranged as part of our #EMPOWHER wellbeing program.

He spoke to our girls about how resilience, determination and a positive mindset can help overcome some of life’s greatest challenges.

Eve Habel (Year 12) and Imogen Elliott (Year 9) had the opportunity to interview Paul after his talk; have a listen to his key messages for our girls:

Head of the River

W9 - Head of the River

Last Saturday was the conclusion of the Rowing season and it was a perfect day set in perfect conditions. Everyone arrived bright and early to set up tents, flags, balloons etc., which was headed up by the Friends of Rowing, and it looked fantastic. The job for the girls was to organise all the boats to make sure they were ready for the races. Everyone was in a fantastic mood and really happy to be there representing their school. As a tradition, the girls and coaches do a chant in a massive circle, which is always a lot of fun and gets everyone excited for the day.

I would like to go through each crew with the positives they got out of the day:

8C: They rowed together and their timing was good. They all had a positive attitude and had a fantastic experience.
8B: Raced well and were really positive before, during and after the race. Their technique has improved so much from the start of the season and they were focused and switched on.
8A: The girls didn’t quite get the result they were looking for but came together and supported each other. They can’t wait to give it a good go again next season and now know what’s required to take that step up.
9C: Finished the race strongly which has been something that they have been working on, so that was a big tick. They also looked to be moving in time and moving together.
9B: They fought hard to the finish line. They had a positive attitude and motivation going into the race.
9A: The girls took the spirit of the day and enjoyed the occasion. Technically, they rowed well and together.
10B: Won their race and never stopped believing. They trusted each other to have a good race.
10A: Had their best race of the season, they backed each other 100%. Rowed hard and put the other crews under plenty of pressure.
1st IV: Despite all of their ups and downs, they made it to the day and had a strong row. Sometimes just getting there is a win in itself.
1st VIII: Did what no other 1st VIII crew has done in the history of Saints Girls’ rowing by finishing in 4th place at Head of the River. It was a brilliant effort by the girls, they looked great and seeing their faces at the end of the race really made me feel proud.

Well done to all the girls on a great season, you truly made it one to remember and I hope you all go away looking forward to next season and have that same willingness to learn and improve. Thanks to everyone who came along and supported the girls, it was brilliant to see the Saints’ colours.

Flashback Friday to Choral Night 2019

W9 - Choral Night

The Choral Night audience was treated to a special video production put together in the weeks leading up to the event. Opening the show, the ‘Choral Night Dance-Off’ video fired up the crowd and the girls as they watched each House face-off on Chiverton Lawns.

The production of the video required much work behind-the-scenes, and was filmed across various recess and lunch times.

Well done to everyone involved, especially our guest star, Gabriella Noskovic from Year 1, who did a great job delivering the dance-off invite to Selwyn.

New Dimension for Food Tech Students

W9 - Food Printer

The Food Technology department, led by Jenni Manson, is working with a 3D food printer to print out food designs and structures with her classes, and to provide an opportunity for the girls to use cutting-edge technology in the modern food industry.

Jenni has worked with many chefs in the past and has identified the trend of 3D printing being used in the modern food industry. The technology is being used in professional restaurants and even in future homes, and looks to be something that will be more common in the next few years. NASA is currently working on providing this technology to expand the food options for astronauts, while the US Army is also looking into personalised nutrition using 3D food printing.

After searching the globe for an appropriate printer to begin the culinary experimentation for her classes, Jenni settled on the Foodini, manufactured in Barcelona.

The ‘Foodini’ printer requires some preparation before you can simply print the design. The machine differentiates itself from other food printers with its ability to produce products from fresh ingredients that are hand loaded. However, users must prepare the food refills by chopping, cutting or processing them.

This process allows users to know exactly what ingredients are used to print their food item, which is a quality many people would appreciate. The machine does not use any additional food glues to create its designs, but allows the girls to experiment with food consistencies and textures to produce a viable mixture.

Jenni’s in-class work with the girls has begun to extend to Science, Nutrition and even Psychology in how this technology may change the way that consumers are able to prepare and plate food. Jenni has mentioned possibilities of aged-care and child food presentations.

Jenni was recently invited to meet up with the Head Chef Brendan Wessels and Technical, Culinary and Research Director, Lindsay Dürr, of the d’Arenberg Cube. The meeting was to discuss food technology and recipes the girls are able to create using this process. “We spent a long time researching this (food printer), and this thing was so new it did not come with even a manual or warranty.” said Brendan during the conversations. “I see that it will be something that has huge potential in the industry.”

We are excited to see where Jenni will take this unique technology with our Saints Girls in the next few years. Bon appétit!

W9 - Mind Lab

After several rigorous and brain-stretching rounds of internal competitions involving 50 of our Year 5 and 6s, eight students were chosen to represent Saints Girls at the Mind Lab Olympics interschool competition last Tuesday, and they did us proud. Not only did they play well, they showed great strength of character in maintaining their composure and determination against some very strong competition.

We congratulate the following students for their tenacity and excellent sportsmanship as they competed in their respective games:

Abalone – Jiahui Zhang and Nicole Wang
Checkers – Alannah Godfrey and Elaine Chen
Octi – Shirley Liu and Lyra Cox
Quoridor – Madi Dornbusch and Arabella Walsh

A special congratulations goes to Jiahui Zhang, who received a bronze medal for her efforts in ‘Abalone’.

Major Step for Talented Dancers

W9 - Dance 2

At the beginning of the year, I came across some information from Australian Dance Theatre, seeking talented, young dancers to audition for their youth ensemble. Knowing the style, strength and skill of two SACE Dance students, Claire Hunt (Year 11) and Jessica Schaedel (Year 12), I put them forward for the audition.

Having studied ADT throughout their Dance program, it has been so amazing that these two successful dancers are now working amongst the best contemporary dancers and choreographers ADELAIDE has to offer. Proud teacher moment!

Kate Burnett
Head of Arts

“My experience so far with the ADT Youth Ensemble has been amazing. We have had the opportunities to work with many different choreographers and have already performed with the company in one of Lewis Major’s Fringe shows. The majority of the time, Lewis Major takes our classes, but on other occasions, we have had the chance to work with other professional dancers from the company as well as some soloist choreographers. Each week, we do a technique class where we explore different aspects of technique. Some weeks we do a ballet technique class with exercises at the barre and other weeks we do a contemporary technique class which often involves a lot of floor work. Each of the teachers takes on technique differently. This exposure to different forms of technique has helped me to formulate choreography for my Stage 2 Dance Composition.

Lewis choreographs all of our pieces that we perform and, on the weeks that he is absent, we often do tasking. This is where we are given a way to formulate choreography. Sometimes we are told to use a stimulus in the room, and other times our stimuli is based on descriptions of movement that we can interpret in our own way to create a phrase of movement. We are currently working on a piece with Lewis for the Neon Teen Takeover that is to be performed in the Art Gallery of South Australia.” – Claire Hunt (Year 11)

Extension Strings Hit the Recording Studio

W9 - Recording Studio

Last Monday, Extension Strings took to Wizard Tone studios to record the string backing for one of Enchanté’s favourite songs, I Hear Your Name. It was a challenging task where each student was required to wear headphones, or ‘cans’ in recording jargon! In order to create the overdub, students had to synchronise their playing with our pre-existing recording, a real challenge, given the nature of this very demanding piece.

As always, Extension Strings rose to the occasion, finishing the recording process in just three takes. Special thanks to Cheri Wong, Faye Ma, Rachel Banham, Angel Li and Zoe Vine Hall for their professionalism in creating this special recording which we hope to release very soon. Stay tuned!´

Seat of Encouragement – Style a Tile

W3 - Seat

The Next Challenge: Building for Tomorrow

Our ‘Seat of Encouragement’ will be a striking feature in our new Science Centre. Located on the second level between the four general laboratories, the seat will be accompanied by individual tiles, recognising donors who contribute to this unique St Peter’s Girls’ Foundation campaign.

We invite current/past parents and staff, Old Scholars, friends of the School and local businesses to purchase an expression of encouragement to embolden and inspire our girls.

The St Peter’s Girls’ Foundation raises funds to advance the School’s educational, scholarship and building programs. By purchasing a tile, you will be supporting the learners of today and tomorrow.

All tiles can be personalised and many offer the choice of a motivational quote. They can be purchased via www.trybooking.com/BARQD.

AFLW Player’s True Calling

W9 - Guest

This week in Chapel, we had the great pleasure to welcome AFLW Adelaide Crows player Hannah Martin to speak to the girls about her experience playing footy at the highest level and how her Christian faith has influenced the way she plays.

Hannah is in her first season with the Crows and spoke to the girls about the amazing opportunity she has been given to play the sport she loves. She talked about the challenges and pressures of playing football and the way her faith has supported and helped her though these.

She also told the girls about the pressure she felt to perform and do her best, and that she was finding worth and identity in playing well. She then challenged herself and the girls to think about where us, as people, get our worth. Hannah shared that the value she finds in being a follower of Jesus is bigger than any importance or value that being a successful footy player could have.

The Gospel of John says, “Anyone who believed in his name, he gave the right to become a child of God”, and Hannah reminded us all if we believe and follow Jesus, our worth comes from being a child of God, rather than anything we could do.

We thank Hannah for taking the time out of her busy Grand Final preparations to speak to us all and wish her the best of luck.

Wild Time at Monarto Zoo for Year 3

W9 - Year 3s

On Friday of Week 6, the Year 3s went on an excursion to Monarto Zoo. We became zoo keepers and helped look after the animals’ enclosure by removing the poo. We observed lots of critically-endangered animals and learnt about Monarto Zoo’s conservation programs. We saw leopards, lions, zebras, giraffes and chimpanzees. It was exciting to learn about the different animals and how we can make a difference in helping raise awareness to support endangered animals.

Fundraising for Fiji and Cambodia

W9 - BBQ Fundraiser

As part of the Year 11 Service Learning Program, our students have the opportunity to volunteer in Fiji and Cambodia.

We offer a diverse range of volunteering experiences, from constructing rainwater tanks and performing reef conservation in Fiji, to building houses and teaching and working in a children’s village in Cambodia.

In order to maximise the impact of our volunteering, we raise money to facilitate our actions and donate to organisations that work to improve the lives of people in developing countries. Fundraising activities include Bunnings BBQs, raffles, cupcake stalls, small business ventures and movie nights.

Last weekend, our students raised over $1000 at our Kent Town Bunnings sausage sizzle and we hope to repeat this success on Saturday 4 May.

Piano Eisteddfod at St Peter’s Girls

W9 - Piano Eisteddfod

The St Peter’s Girls’ Piano Eisteddfod is once again being held in Term 2 this year. This is a great opportunity for piano players of all ages and skill levels to perform a piece of music in front of an audience on our beautiful grand piano.

Between 12.15 and 3pm on Monday 27 May, entrants will be given a time to come to MB120 and perform their prepared piece. Parents and friends are welcome to watch this performance. Girls will be given written feedback on their performance as well as a participation certificate.

For girls who have an exam coming up or have never had a chance to play a piano piece in public, or just want to share one of their favourite pieces, this is the perfect opportunity.
This Eisteddfod is open to all students at Saints Girls, no matter how long or short a time they have been learning piano.

From the Eisteddfod, 10 girls will be selected, representing each year level, to perform at an evening recital on Thursday 6 June. At this performance, we are lucky enough to have secured David Goodwin to be our special guest performer. David is an outstanding Adelaide-based piano player who regularly performs both Jazz and Classical music at the highest level. He is a fine musician who is sure to inspire our developing piano players.

I look forward to hearing all our wonderful piano players performing their favourite work at our Eisteddfod in May. Entry forms will be available in Week 1 of Term 2.
Happy practicing!

Firm Footing at SACE Dance Day

W9 - Dance Excursion

On Tuesday 19 March, the Stage 1 and 2 Dance students participated in the annual SACE Dance Day along with many other schools at the Festival Centre. We were provided with many experiences which have consolidated our understanding and expectations of the SACE Dance course. To begin, we listened to presentations from Jacinta Hirisken, a current student at the Australian College of the Arts, and Jessica Schaedel, who was representing our School after completing the Stage 2 course in 2018 with exceptional results.

The first contemporary class we participated in consisted of floor work, travelling exercises and weight transfer which particularly benefited our technique component of the SACE course. We were so fortunate to have Larissa McGowan, renowned contemporary choreographer and dancer, provide us with challenging exercises and specific advice for improvement.

We also participated in a fun and fast jazz class taught by Natalie Linke, a SACE Dance examiner. The final workshop focused on our own choreography, which is a part of the course I love. We explored concepts such as how to build an initial concept into movement and then communicate this to audiences. We were able to use the foyer spaces of the Festival Theatre as our inspiration to create movement within.

The concluding Q&A, run by SACE Dance examiners, gave us further insight into the assessment criteria of each course section. The Saints’ SACE Dancers thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be inspired by industry dancers, choreographers and leaders.

Absence from School

Schools are required under the Education Act 1972 (SA) and the Education (Compulsory Education Age) Amendment Act 2007 to ensure that students enrolled at the school do attend school and participate in the learning program.

Whilst we accept there are occurrences such as family emergencies and opportunities for girls to participate in various competitions, sporting and otherwise, that necessitate absence from School, the booking of family vacations during term time is not something that the School can support. In order to maintain the continuity of your daughter’s education, it’s important that she attend all school days.

Applications for leave should be sent to the relevant Head of Sub-School. Applications seeking leave for family holidays during term time will not be approved. Term dates are available on the myLink parent portal and the website. As has always been the case, illness substantiated by a medical certificate will be the only circumstance under which the rescheduling of an assessment task in the Senior School would be warranted.

Tennis Coaching at St Peter’s Girls

W9 - Tennis Coaching

The lunchtime ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program in Term 1 has been a great success! It has been wonderful to see so many girls out on court learning the basic skills of tennis in a fun environment.

Tennis lessons will continue during Terms 2 and 3 for those interested in continuing in the program, however these lessons (or private/small group coaching) will be conducted by Matt Ford, separate from our school program as we turn our focus to winter sports.

Tennis coaching in Terms 2 and 3 is open to all girls from Reception to Year 4. In Term 2, Matt will be handing out a special Hot Shots certificate to each girl, which gives them guidance as to what level they are currently at and shows them some of the different skills needed before moving up to the next level.

For those who participated in Term 1, the coaching will occur on the same day in Term 2 and Matt will notify you if there are any changes to the days. The fees for Term 2 will be $125 and will need to be paid directly to Matt.

Please direct all enquiries and bookings to Matt Ford: ford.matt@bigpond.com or 0412 855 073.

Sports News

W9 - Sport

INTERCOL v Walford

The annual Summer Intercol between Saints Girls and Walford is currently locked at two sports each. The schools are vying for the Rosser/MacDonald Summer trophy –

Walford – Rowing and Basketball
Saints – Tennis and Volleyball

With no match-ups in Term 1 for Softball and Water Polo, we hope to be able to play these in Term 4 to establish an overall winner.

ATHLETICS

Outstanding results were achieved at the State Championships. Despite a nasty fall in the 100m event, Amelia Lucas recovered with a Silver medal in the Triple Jump with a jump of 9.42m, 4th in the 200m Hurdles (31.40) and 4th in the 200m (28.02).

Lauren Disney won four golds in a very strong age group with good competition pushing her to earn Gold in the 60m Hurdles (10.7 – new State record), 200m (31.97), 100m (15.03 – new State record) and 70m (10.69 – which was .05 out of the record set in 1977!).

Congratulations to both girls – awesome effort.

BASKETBALL

Open A– Saints 46 defeated Immanuel 21
The girls played hard in both offence and defence. They had a good last game and we tried to get every girl to score.

Middle A – Saints 24 defeated by Concordia 71
After a tough first half when the score was 46 to 4, the girls played a great second half, 20 to 25. Playing against a much taller team, we were able to make our shots in the second half which meant we could set up defensively and create many turnovers, leading to easier scoring. A special mention to Chi Chi Zhao for her 10 points. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 8 defeated by Concordia 55
Another tough game although it was closer than the score suggests as we were just not able to make our shots. The team continues to show improvement each week; another good rebounding game by Emily Elston. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 6 defeated by Wilderness 40
We scored our highest points in a game and, even though it wasn’t very high, it was a very good game. Wilderness were all quite tall so we struggled to rebound, but the girls didn’t give up. The more reserved girls are starting to really get in there and have a go which is nice to see. – Sharnee Jones (Coach)

SOFTBALL

Year 5/6 Blue – Saints 8 defeated by Seymour Blue 9
The girls have improved so much since our first game in both their attitude towards the game and their skills. It was really exciting because we scored 7 in the first inning then another 1 in the second. Seymour scored only 2 in the first, and then 7 in the second, so it really came down to the wire as Seymour had loaded bases with none out then scored 1 run which tied the score, then we got 2 outs, and then they scored the last run to win. – Steph Collet (Coach)

Year 5/6 – Saints White 9 drew with Seymour Green 9
For our last game of the season, the girls played Seymour and ended up with a tie after three full innings. The girls showed true determination with only seven girls playing the field. Great base running and hitting were our offensive strengths and the defence did a great job helping out our pitchers. I am so proud of all of the girls on an amazing season. Everyone developed a lot with their skills on the field and all 10 girls made great teammates throughout the season. – Jess Dreswick (Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints Blue had a bye

Year 3-4 – Saints White 9 defeated by Walford 11
Walford batted well in the first, getting 7 runs straight up but with good fielding in the next two innings, we kept their runs to only 4. Our girls worked well together in the field with Lauren taking a catch, and our batting really improved making it an exciting game losing by only 2 runs. – Pauline Noblet (Coach)

TENNIS

The Open A team had a convincing 4 sets to 2 win over Concordia. Ruby Deakin played an amazing singles, winning 6-1. The number 2 doubles utilised many strategies to win in 6-5. Every player performed to an exceptionally high standard, showing amazing sportsmanship on and off the tennis court.

The Open Bs had a lovely win against Concordia, winning 4 sets to 2. Tahlia Louca had a wonderful singles, winning 6-0. Charlotte Staples and Imogen Neinaber were a strong pair in the number 1 doubles, working well together to win 6-1. Every player was terrific and their efforts show through these amazing results! – Annabel Baldwinson (Captain)

Premier (A Grade) – Saints 4-26 defeated Concordia 2-22
Singles: Mia Dodd 0-6, Ruby Deakin 6-1, Maiya Jakupec 6-3, Annabel Baldwinson 6-1

Premier Reserves (B Grade) – Saints 4-30 defeated Concordia 2-18
Singles: Imogen Nienaber 6-2, Charlotte Staples 5-6, Georgia Mallick 6-4, Tahlia Louca 6-0

Division 1 – Saints 6-36 defeated Pembroke 0-6
Singles: Ella Dnistriansky 6-0, Bridgette Leach 6-1, Adele Eaton 6-0, Grace Beaumont 6-2

Division 2 – Saints 1-16 defeated By Pembroke 5-31
Singles: Stella Clark 6-1, Victoria Thorp 2-6, Sophie Abbott 4-6, Faye Ma 1-6

Division 4 White – Saints 1-21 defeated by Walford 5-32
Singles: Ayanna Roy 3-6, Lilli Bennett 1-6, Gloria Zou 4-6, Nathara Perera 6-2

Junior Division 1 – Saints did not play

Junior Division 2 Blue – Saints 6-28 defeated Pulteney White 0-1
Singles: Nicole Wang 4-0, Eva Chassiotis 4-0, Jerrie Wu 4-0, Asha Eaton 4-1

Junior Division 2 White – Saints 3-16 defeated Pembroke 3-14
Singles: Shirley Liu 4-0, Olivia Reynolds 2-4, Charlotte Thorpe 4-3, Stella Spalvins 0-4

Junior Division 3 Blue – Saints 2-14 defeated by Seymour Green 4-21
Singles: Lilly Michelon 0-4, Annabel Keough 4-1, Ella Lawes 3-4, Abbie An 0-4

Junior Division 3 White – Saints defeated by Seymour White

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Open A – Saints 1 defeated by Marryatville 3
Marryatville is one of the top teams, yet the girls performed strong defence, preventing them from scoring frequently. Every girl put loads of effort into the game which really showed in our fast and controlled rucking. The girls made near to zero silly mistakes which let us down last week, so that was super exciting. Hannah Freeman was our mighty scorer, once again legging it through an open gap created by the girls’ set play. Best player for this game was Ella as she was always pushing up on defence and thinking ahead. I was really impressed with this game and reckon we will get them next game. – Eve Habel (Captain)

Open C1 – Saints defeated 2-3
The C1s worked really well as a team and were able to put what we had learnt in trainings into the game. We had two amazing tries from Kendra Ware and Stephanie Smalls as well as lots of impressive runs from girls playing in the centre. Even though we were short one try at the end, everyone tried their hardest and we had a very strong defence. – Amelie Eaton

Open C2 – Saints 4 defeated Seymour 1
The team worked well together in attack when looking for holes in the opposition’s defence line where a try could be made. Scorers were Olivia Kelly, Kendra Ware and Adele Russell. It was a good game where the team worked well together. – Dan Searle

Middle A – Saints

Middle B – Saints had a bye

Middle C – Saints 9 defeated St Dominic’s 1
This was a great game with the team having the opportunity to put in play some of their new defensive strategies. It was also good to see an increase in communication resulting in a number of well-orchestrated tries scored. The wingers worked well with Apurva Ichalkaranje and Lady Murphy scoring a number of tries. It was also good to see Jasmine Segredos sneak in and score a try after fast-paced rucking destroyed the defence. The girls worked hard to encourage and support each other, leading to a convincing win over St Dominic’s. – Becca Burton Howard (Coach)

VOLLEYBALL

Open A – Saints 1 defeated by Immanuel 2 (20-25, 25-21, 10-15)
With everything on the line mid-way through the season, both teams came out swinging. We were a little slow out of the blocks with our decision-making. Facing a strong side bolstered by a strong serving Swedish import, we knew we had a battle on our hands. Fighting hard, we struggled with passing and transition to attack. Georgina Keough returned with a serving run of her own but we couldn’t catch up, with Immanuel taking the first set.

Revved up for a comeback, the girls came out determined as Charlotte White returned fire with strong serves of her own. We were well ahead in the second set but Immanuel started to claw their way back and nearly caused an upset, but some smart tipping from Brooke Elliott made sure we took the second set pushing the match to a decider.

There was tense, unrelenting pressure from both teams with neither side willing to back down. Sisters Charlotte and Anna White combined to set a monster block, lifting the confidence of the team. The set was 8-all. Up stepped the opposition Swede to serve to give them some ascendency. We battled hard right to the end but were unable to take the points. This hopefully leaves us hungrier for this week when we come up against another strong opposition in Concordia. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Immanuel 2 (24-26, 22-25)
Much like the Open A game, this match was going to be a tough encounter. Both teams scrambled, chasing down balls, and the air was electric with each side working extremely hard in the heat. The first set scoreline was 24-24 before Immanuel were able to take it out 24-26.

The second set played out similar to the first. Ruby Deakin was able to get good runs of serves and Chloe Deieso, playing a second match for the morning, was dominant at the net. The girls are working better as a team each week and all players are progressing well with their individual skills. Concordia need to watch out this week…the Saints are coming!!! – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open C – Saints 3 defeated Woodcroft 0
The Open Cs had a great game. All the girls have improved so much since our first game of the year and are finally getting the results they deserve. A highlight was in the second set; we were down 15-22, however, Amy Li’s strong and consistent serving gave us the run we needed to come back and win the set 25-23. Caitlin Fidler and Ellen Zhang also had particularly good games but, overall, this win will give the team the confidence they need going into the next couple weeks and hopefully we can have a strong finish to the term. – Victoria Neale (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 3 defeated Immanuel 0
The Middle As had yet another comfortable win. As a team, we have been working on our serving in training and in games continue to show how strong a serving team we are. Charlie Fishlock made an example of this by serving 18 points in a row to win us the second set. Even when the opposition was able to return the ball, the girls were always ready to receive it and spike it straight back. – Victoria Neale (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 3 defeated Immanuel 0 (25-14, 30-28, 18-12)
A nail-biting second set for the girls. Playing three passes saw a point scored each time they were successful using teamwork and three passes. MVP – Gracie being most improved. – Vicki Dent (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 3 defeated Immanuel 0 (25-22, 25-17, 30-28)
The Cs felt some pressure in the final set, with play moving point-to-point to each time. The girls handled the pressure well and produced some good serves to take a very close third set. MVP – Rebecca for her leadership on court and good energy, keeping her team mates in high spirits – Vicki Dent (Coach)

Choral Night 2019

Selwyn win the Choral Night Shield after a magical night of colour!

In our second Choral Night at the Adelaide Convention Centre, parents, students, Old Scholars and members of the wider community were treated to an amazing evening of choral skill and energetic and creative dance. As ever, the expert judges were astounded that the student House leaders and music experts were able to galvanise their mass choirs in just over two weeks of rehearsals to produce such a high-quality set of vocal performances.

This year’s theme of ‘Colours’ allowed students to choose songs from all genres, and in a welcome and surprising development, a couple of the Houses chose to engage with Old Scholars to create a vocal arrangement, rather than purchasing one from an established choral arranger. I hope that this extension of the sense of House community will continue in the future, especially with the number of talented musicians from recent graduating classes active in local and national university Music courses, and in the wider music scene.

As a School we place a high value on creativity, and Choral Night certainly acts as one of our many vehicles to allow that characteristic to flourish. Not only in the obvious creativity needed to arrange the chosen hymn shown by our current students in each House, but also in the creative ways the House leaders went about showcasing the talents of students from all ages, and in the way they thought about being inclusive and supportive as they led their mass choirs. There were occasions, however, where their creative approach to the dance had to be modified, so as to prevent inevitable injury later in the year as the staff attempt to replicate their dance moves for Year 12 Celebration Day!

As our students reflected today upon their hard work, on the highs and the lows of the many rehearsals, on the thrill of performing in front of a live audience, and perhaps upon the feedback of our expert judges, it was especially pleasing to hear so many of them congratulating each other on a job well done, regardless of whether they were from the winning House or not.

With this popular event over for another year, we immediately look forward to the annual season-ending Head of the River tomorrow. Races start at 8.30am at the West Lakes’ course, and we wish all our crews the best of luck as they compete in this well-supported and prestigious event.

From the Music Prefect

W8 - Music Prefect

Week 8 is an exciting week for our Years 7 – 12 students, as it is a week full of challenging rehearsals, friendly competition between Houses, and finally a thrilling and exciting performance known as Choral Night!

Choral Night is a cherished Saints Girls’ tradition, where the four Houses perform two songs, one of which is a set hymn arranged by the musical seniors in each House. This year’s chosen piece was an up-beat, vibrant, African gospel tune called Siyahamba. The second piece is chosen by the Year 12s, but must fit the requirements of the chosen theme of the night: for 2019 it was a song with a colour in its title. This allowed an array of exciting and classic songs to appear on the night, involving all generations in the audience, and creating a wonderful sense of enthusiasm and community. Some of this year’s choices included Michael Jackson’s Black or White, I See Red by Split Enz, and Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra. The choirs were accompanied by a band created from each House, showcasing the musical talent of the students and the variety and incredible number of instruments that Saints Girls play! Finally, after the House performed their two pieces, the Year 12 cohort showed their creativity, cohesion, and House pride in an upbeat, entertaining, and well-rehearsed dance choreographed by themselves.

This year the choirs and bands were allowed to rehearse for two weeks prior to the night, and the girls work tirelessly and enthusiastically to produce an incredible, successful and professional outcome, in a very short period of time.

Although Choral Night is strictly a music event, it is talked about and enjoyed by all girls, as it is a great opportunity to build relationships within the Houses, grow House pride, and also allow individuals to experience a new environment, and encourage them to join the music program more regularly!

Multiplying Our Maths Support

W8 - Year 4 Maths

As part of our ongoing participation in the Junior School Mathematics project, the Year 4 classes and parents attended a ‘Multiplying our Maths Support’ session on Wednesday 6 March. This was facilitated by Mathematics curriculum leader, Lisa-Jane O’Connor in the Junior School Library.

Students participated in simple card, dice and number games involving partitioning to ten, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. These games involved a parent and daughter, and they demonstrated the ways in which parents can assist students in their ability to increase their recall of number facts.

In the same way that students learn to read and write by practising at home as well as at school, it is essential that parents assist students at home in order for them to learn to recall number facts with appropriate fluency. The successful development of this skill greatly enhances a child’s ability to solve mathematical situations with confidence.

Year 9 Drama Workshop

W8 - Drama

Dr Corinna Di Niro, an expert on the Italian theatrical form ‘Commedia dell’arte’ conducted a workshop for the Year 9 Drama students who are studying Commedia this term.

The students had a refresher on the physical shapes of the stock characters, learned some classic stage fighting moves using traditional slapsticks, and then had an opportunity to receive feedback on their own scenario work in the lead up to their assessment. It was such a privilege to work with Dr di Niro, who has learned, taught and performed all over the world. I can’t wait to see the girls apply these techniques to their performances and look forward to seeing what they produce.

Year 3s Visit Adelaide Zoo

W8 - Year 3

On Monday Week 5, the Year 3s went on an excursion to Adelaide Zoo. We went to Adelaide Zoo because our inquiry is all about endangered animals and sharing the planet. There were lots of things to learn with the help of the zookeepers.

We learnt the names of the different types of classification groups and we learnt how to sort the animal kingdom. We also learnt how we can help the endangered animals stay alive. We learnt about tigers, blue-tongued lizards and stick insects. When we learnt about tigers we learnt why they are endangered and what makes them endangered. We learnt that blue-tonged lizards and stick insects both use camouflage to protect themselves. The last thing we did, was we learnt what each animal needed in their enclosure to make it just right for them.

IMPORTANT – Traffic Safety

At St Peter’s Girls the welfare of our students, parents and staff is paramount. As such, we remind our community to adhere to potentially life-saving safety practices.

When crossing the road outside the school grounds, please ensure you use the designated school crossing on Stonyfell Road or the pedestrian traffic light crossing on Hallett Road. There have been a number of recent near-misses and we cannot stress the importance of taking these simple precautions.

For drivers, please abide by the no right turn rule when entering/exiting the car park, as well as ensuring traffic is kept to a single lane.

We greatly appreciate your cooperation and support in this crucial area.

BASKETBALL

Open – Saints 48 defeated Westminster 26
The girls had another great win this week against Westminster. The girls attacked well in offence and created lots of turnovers in defence. They played strong one-on-one defence, particularly at the beginning of the game. All players contributed with Sarah Matheson scoring 11 points, Sivi Sivasuthan 10 points and Indya Dodd 9 points. Great job team. – Sarah Matheson (Captain)

Middle A – Saints 5 defeated by Westminster 54
A very tough game against a quality opposition. The girls worked hard but were just outclassed by a much taller and more physical team. We worked on our offence in the second half and were much better, although the final score did not reflect this. A good learning experience. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 0 defeated by Westminster 60
Very similar to the Middle A game in that we played a quality team who were very physical and fast. I think we were a little overwhelmed as none of the team play basketball outside of school but it was a learning experience and one we can learn from. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 2 defeated by Pembroke 23
Although we didn’t score much we played our best game yet. Our defence was very aggressive and active. Our offensive game is also improving. Almost everybody was able to shoot the ball, coming very close to scoring! It was good to see all the girls having a go at dribbling the ball down the court. I am positive that we will continue to get better each week! – Sharnee Jones (Coach)

ROWING

ARC Regatta 16/3/19
The regatta was only for our Juniors on this perfect Saturday morning. It was their last hit out before Head of the River (HoR) and all Junior crews had one race, which in effect is exactly what HoR is, just one race per crew. I was really happy with how all the crews raced on Saturday, many of the girls have come a long way over the term and season. For Junior rowers it is all about learning the basics; sequence, racing and process, which are built upon each season as they move up through the year levels. Junior racing this season has been extremely good, with the standard being exceptional from a lot of schools, so for our girls to hold their own has been awesome to watch. I can’t wait to watch them race at HoR, which will culminate all their hard work and commitment. Please come down and support the girls, we would love to see you there. GO SAINTS! – Ben Flannagan (Director of Rowing)

SOFTBALL

Year 5/6 Blue – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour Green 11
Saints had an awesome first innings where the girls really pulled themselves together and worked as a team. Unfortunately, in the last innings, Jerrie Wu was pitching and took a line drive into her shinbone just above her ankle. We’ve got one game left next week so hoping to see a good result! – Steph Collet (Coach)

Year 5/6 – Saints White 14 defeated Saints Silver 1
It was a warmer day but the girls were still focused and won 14-1. With only 8 girls available to play, this win was a full team effort. Kate Thomas and Carla Massicci both did great jobs pitching and defence was strong all around. The bats were also on fire as both innings reached the 7 run maximum. I was very proud of the entire teams effort and was excited to win another game. – Jess Dreswick (Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints Blue 11 defeated by Seymour 21
The girls tried really hard this week. Despite the loss, they showed great concentration and combined for some double plays. Emily L played a fantastic game at first base, and Ros Stavrou, Enya Ouyang and Aleiyah Abraham all kindly played for the other team to even the teams, which showed great sportsmanship. Well done girls. – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints White had a bye.

TENNIS

W8 - TennisThe Open A and B teams carried on the success and the outstanding skill level of tennis from the Saturday teams for the Tennis Intercol against Walford. The Open A team had a convincing win, winning 4-2. Mia Dodd played excellent doubles and singles matches, winning each 6-0 respectively. Maiya Jakupec fought hard in both her doubles and singles matches, playing two extremely close tie breakers.

The Open B team had a tough match, losing 4-2. This score does not reflect the high level of tennis that was played. Charlotte Staples played a wonderful singles match, winning 6-2. Ella Dnistriansky, who filled in at the last minute, won her singles match 6-3, playing to a high standard. A very big congratulations to all girls who participated on Saturday and Monday, helping to contribute to another amazing Intercol win against Walford! TOUCH FOOTBALL

Open A – Saints 1 defeated by Pembroke 8
Pembroke were a really strong and experienced team, but despite the score, the girls played a positive game and never dropped their energy levels. The girls set up some great set plays and listened to one another when taking directions. Hannah Freeman did a fantastic dive across the line scoring from a quickie set up on the line. I love how the girls keep their heads up throughout the whole game and always put up a strong fight. I’m really impressed with the girls’ spirit and looking forward to another tough game next week. – Eve Habel (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Marryatville 3
Despite the loss, it was a great game played by all the girls. Everyone put in a great amount of effort and implemented drills we had learnt at training into the game. We rucked up quickly in the centre of the field to gain ground, in the hopes we could score. Although no tries were scored, there were some great attempts. – Sarah Wishart

Open C1 – Saints 1 defeated by St Aloysius 2
After a few weeks break it was a matter of getting back into the game structure and playing against an opposition. Although our team did not pull through with a win, we still gave it our best, with Stephanie Smalls being able to score a try through the tough defence lines held by the other team. Some things that we thought we did well involved picking up the ball fast and passing off, which allowed us to speed up the game, and ultimately get down to the try line quicker. In coming weeks we need to keep working on rucking down the field, running straight at the opposition with the ball to make ground, and get to the try line quicker. We hope to improve these skills in the next training which should help us in future games. – Alice Girdler

Open C2 – Saints 3 defeated Loreto 1
The girls dominated possession early in the game before finally using a set play to score twice in quick succession. Olivia Kelly passed out to Adele Russell on the wing who directed her run inside, allowing Olivia to wrap around easily and receive a pass before scoring in space. The game became an arm wrestle after that and Loreto were able to score once before Kendra Ware put the game beyond doubt with a searing run through the middle to score, with the defence trailing in her wake. A great win by these girls and improvement shown in their “rucking” patterns. – Dan Searle (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 2 defeated Marryatville 1
The team have improved so much from the beginning of the season and really worked together to defeat Marryatville. Our quick rucking provided us with the opportunities needed to gain ground and score tries. The girls on the wing worked hard and did some amazing touches, stopping the agile Marryatville girls. The whole team contributed to the success of this week’s game and the girls should be proud. Keep up the good work! – Willow Stewart-Rattray

Middle B – Saints 6 defeated Loreto 3
The girls began the game with flat attack positioning and were too slow walking instead of running to receive the ball. However, our strong defensive wall helped to stop Loreto getting through to score. Later in the game the girls started to hit the ball with more pace, and the wingers were able to score as the play was spread out. The girls did well at shooting in defence. The girls used some of the techniques that have been learnt in training but need to apply these on a more regular basis to help improve our game. In the upcoming games the girls will work on not being flat when in attack and running onto the ball. The girls will also work on using some of the techniques that we have learnt in training. – Bella Sanders-Wills

Middle C – Saints did not play.

VOLLEYBALL

Open A – Saints 3 defeated Walford 0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-18)
With Intercol on the line, everyone was keen to let Walford know our intentions early. After the first side-out Clair Kao stepped up to serve. Walford were stunned. Claire served 9 straight points. Everyone rallied and we didn’t have enough time to get through all the planned substitutions. Some changes to team structure in the second set allowed Chloe Deieso to step up and get a serving run of her own. The progression of the team is fantastic.
The girls rallied around each other through the whole match and it was great to see the support for each other as everyone accepted the challenge to extend themselves in the last set. Closing out the third set to win the match sets the team up well in the upcoming challenges against stronger opposition, with the focus clearly on the next two matches. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open B – Saints 3 defeated Walford 0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-23)
We were a little slow getting organised, and only just took the first set in a very tight contest. With Intercol on the line, the girls got mobile and started to move together and dominate blocking at the net. Making better position and supporting each other, we closed out the second set easily. Walford came out firing in the third set, but a great serving run by Toni Christiansen allowed us to get back in front and close out the match in a tense finish. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open C – Saints 0 defeated by Walford 3 (16-25, 23-25, 24-26)
Very close game in each set. The team stepped up in the second set after a shaky start and played some very good volleyball with three touches before going over the net. Most valuable player goes to Candy Feng.

Middle A – Saints 3 defeated Walford 0
It was a comfortable win for the girls this weekend. Saints were clearly the stronger servers with almost every girl now able to serve overarm. Samantha Keough and Charlie Fishlock played particularly well, and Sarah Gulliver’s enthusiasm throughout the whole game rubbed off on the rest of the team, keeping the energy up within the group for all three sets. – Victoria Neale (Coach)

Middle B – Saints did not play.

Middle C – Saints 3 defeated Pembroke 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-12)
This week it was pleasing to see the players improving. Monica Isaac receives special mention for the week with her digging platform the most improved, giving accurate passes. – Vicki Dent (Coach)

WATER POLO

Open A – Saints 10 defeated Pembroke 4
The opposition was tough and the girls had to play their best water polo to secure the win. All players played a great one-on-one defence, and supported other team members in defence which put a lot pressure on Pembroke. We outnumbered our opposition in the number of steals and counter attacks which was reflected in the score. The second and third quarters were our best, we scored three goals in each to Pembroke’s one goal in each. Best player this week was Lara Wakeham. Lara was a key player in the game as she defended well and reacted quickly to the game play around her which enabled her to get many steals and swim up the pool quickly for counter attacks. Well done girls! – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Open B – Saints 4 defeated Mercedes 3
This week was the girls first win, which was a result of an outstanding team effort where all the girls displayed their determination throughout. It was a close and exciting game with Saints trailing at half-time 1-2. Saints fought back hard, out-scoring Mercedes in both of the last two quarters by one goal, resulting in an overall win to Saints by one goal. Great game! – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Open C – Saints 13 defeated Sacred Heart 1
The girls won their second game in a row, once again by a very large margin. The team’s strength was in their strong defence, not only making it difficult for Sacred Heart to score but resulting in the girls winning many turnovers and creating opportunities for Saints to shoot for goals. Best player again this week was Sophie Dansie who won all her swim ups, leading the team with her fantastic attacking and defensive game, and also shooting several goals. – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Year 7-8 – Saints 7 defeated by Loreto 8
Such a good game, the girls were just a little run down towards the end but still put in a terrific effort! – Gemma Rowe (Coach)

Saints Girls Scoop the Pool

Our talented swimmers have pulled off a masterstroke with a series of outstanding results including our Years 7 – 12 girls winning the coveted IGSSA Swimming Shield.

With extra events and an Under 13 age group, Saints were terrific from the outset. It was always going to be close against Seymour, Wilderness and Immanuel, and at the half-way mark, we led by just 1 point. Saints showed their class in the 4x50m relays, winning three of the five, with a 3rd and a 4th in the other two, to regain the Medlen Shield.

Saints have won the shield in three of the past four years – an incredible run! Our girls took out the U13, U14 and U16 age pennants, with the U13 relay team of Isabelle Tran, Georgina Wakeham, Annabel Ryan and Sophie Dansie setting a new age record.

Our swimmers also shone at the State Secondary Schools A Grade competition for students in Years 8 – 12. Being a small school and competing in the highest grade is a top achievement in itself. Saints swam brilliantly, finishing third overall (581 points) behind Seymour (656) and Trinity College (615).

Our younger swimmers excelled at the SAPSASA event for students in Years 4 – 7. All girls competed to a very high standard, with Marcella Tolley (Year 7), Lauren Pearce (Year 6), Ella Pearce (Year 4) and Isla Fahey (Year 4) gaining selection in the East Adelaide district team.

Well done to all girls for their hard work and team spirit.

From the Deputy Principal / Head of Senior School

W7 - Banner

It is always a wonderful part of the term when the girls commence their rehearsals for Choral Night. To date, we have had seven rehearsals and yesterday I spoke to the Year 12 girls regarding their leadership of their respective Houses. The staff and I have been thoroughly impressed with the organisation they have demonstrated, and what has been very obvious is the support, energy, encouragement and care that they have demonstrated towards younger girls.

What has also been commendable has been their ability to recognise when they require help and offer leadership opportunities to musicians in younger year groups. I have often said to the girls that leadership is not about being the centre of attention. It is instead about ensuring you have the right girl at the centre when needed.

I am very much looking forward to next Thursday evening, for what is guaranteed to be a spectacular night.

Paul Dillon – Drug Education

W7 - PaulYesterday, girls in Years 10, 11 and 12 each had a 90 minute presentation with Paul Dillon. Paul has been working in the area of drug education for the past 25 years and presents at over 200 schools each year. He is a best-selling author and is regarded as a key social commentator and expert in best practice drug education.

Paul has been visiting St Peter’s Girls for over 15 years and his enthusiastic but realistic approach always results in sessions where the girls are engaged with the content. His sessions this week covered a variety of topics including alcohol, cannabis, ecstasy, MDMA, pill testing, drink driving and the impact that drug use has on the teenage brain. More importantly perhaps were his messages to the girls about self-care. I encourage all parents of the senior girls to talk with their daughters about the messages they took away from Paul.

Paul de Gelder. IMPROVISE. ADAPT. OVERCOME

EmpowHER Enews Banner_1
A reminder that our #EMPOWHER guest speaker for this year is Paul de Gelder. Paul will be taking to all girls in Years 6 – 12 on Monday 25 March in the Arts Centre. He has agreed to a filmed interview with two girls and we will ensure that this is released to parents so you can hear his views on topics such as resilience and leadership.

Paul is an ex-Navy diver, author and motivational speaker. In 2009, while completing a dive in Sydney Harbour, Paul was attacked by a shark and consequently lost his right arm and leg. His story of survival and recovery is certainly one that will provide the girls with the inspiration to overcome challenges that will be an inevitable part of their future.

International Women’s Day Breakfast

W7 - Breakfast 2

Early last Friday morning, 22 Year 12s travelled with Ms Mortimer and Mr Trobbiani to the Adelaide Convention Centre for the International Women’s Day Breakfast.

In its 26th year, the event was attended by over 2500 people. It was hosted by Senator Penny Wong, and Jane Caro was the guest speaker. Whilst eating a wonderful breakfast, we were able to listen to both Penny and Jane speak to us about equality in the workplace, feminism and various other topics that were very interesting. We were even lucky enough to take photos with them.

On behalf of all the girls who attended, I can say it was a wonderful experience and I hope we have the opportunity to do it again in the future.

From Montreal to Stonyfell – Canada Exchange

W7 - Canada

“Last September, I spent a month in Montreal, Canada. This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It was incredible to go to the other side of the world by myself and see the lifestyle of people who live so far away from me. I made great friends and it is an experience I will never forget. Through this exchange, I have grown independently and learnt many life skills.

I was quickly educated about the culture and way of life of Canadians and was immersed into the society normalities. I found that living with people from a different city is a lot more valuable than just visiting it as a tourist because you learn so much about the city and the people. The thing that appealed to me the most about the idea of the exchange was the fact I would be given the opportunity to also show someone around the place that I live and show pride towards it. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was extremely beneficial to me and something that I will always remember.” – Georgina Devine, Year 10 student

“I have had the amazing opportunity to spend a month here in Australia. This is an experience that I will never forget. I was unsure what to expect and was a bit nervous about what was to come, but I was immediately welcomed by my host family. They made me feel right at home straight away. Knowing nobody but one person at school, all the girls were so nice to me, and I felt comfortable so quickly. This exchange has taught me so much about myself. Before this, I could not even imagine myself traveling across the world alone. I can confidently say that this experience has made me a more open-minded and independent person. I now know for the future, that when I am doubting my ability to do something, I will realise that I can do it, and risks are worth taking. It has been amazing to see the Australian culture first-hand, and live in heat that Canadians never experience! I was lucky enough to be brought to Sydney, where I was able to visit famous landmarks. Seeing things like the Opera House, the bridge, kangaroos and koalas made me realise that there is so much of the world that I had no idea existed. During my time here, I have made friendships that I will cherish forever.” – Carley Star, Year 10 exchange student

Good Rap for Year 6 Hip Hop Class

W7 - Hip Hop

Our three Year 6 Music classes were joined by award-winning hip hop artist and educator Scott Griffiths, aka ‘Optamus’, for an amazing workshop last Thursday.

Scott has worked in youth centres, schools, prisons and some of the most remote communities in Australia. His focus is utilising hip hop and technology to engage students who are often in challenging environments.

The girls spent a double lesson learning about rhyme, beats and rapping. Scott spoke about hip hop culture and the positive elements behind this multi-facetted art form. At the end of the session, the girls created and performed their very own rap in small groups. To cap it all off, Optamus did a rap performance where the girls sang and danced on stage with him. A fun and educational time was had by all!

It’s a Bug’s Life for Year 1

W7 - Year 1

As part of their central idea, ‘Invertebrates have a role in balancing the natural world’, the Year 1 classes had a close-up look at different types of invertebrates during a fabulous ‘junior entomologist’ activity.

‘Bugs n slugs’ educators brought in a large variety of ‘creepy crawlies’ and the students were able to explore the invertebrates and even touch and hold some of them! The creatures included giant millipedes, caterpillars, stick insects, a scorpion, beetles and spiders. Snail racing was also a big hit! It was interesting to learn about the special roles invertebrates have in nature as pollinators, decomposers and pest controllers.

Did you know that spiders have blue blood and that cockroaches are experts at holding their breath?

Mrs Liddy and Mrs Sandercock have been impressed by the girls’ research skills as they have continued with individual inquiries into invertebrates. They have researched habitat, diet, life cycle and special role in nature, as well as interesting facts such as the above!

Golden Opportunity for Year 5

W7 - Year 5

The Year 5 cohort ventured to the Adelaide Hills last Thursday to visit the Jupiter Creek Goldfields in Echunga. This is an important part of our current Unit of Inquiry, ‘Gold Fever’, as the girls begin to investigate the Australian gold rush era of the 19th century, prior to their Study Tour at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat next month. The central idea for this unit is, ‘The discovery of any resource has challenges, consequences and opportunities.’

This visit enabled the girls to gain perspective into how the area was impacted by the gold rush and what went on during this time period in South Australia. They are now writing expository letters to the Department of Mines and Energy. The letter addresses the girls’ perceptions of the site, including its historical significance, with them having the opportunity to provide suggestions for improvements to attract tourism. Letters will be selected from within the cohort and sent to the department, with the hope of making a positive impact in preserving a time and place in our history which warrants appreciation.

IMPORTANT – Traffic Safety

At St Peter’s Girls, the welfare of our students, parents and staff is paramount.

BADMINTON

Congratulations to Yang Yang Gu (Year 8) and Gloria Gao (Year 9) who have been selected by South Australia Badminton to represent SA in an U17 event in Adelaide later in the year.

BASKETBALL

We almost won the Inter Collegiate trophy!
Open – Saints 47 defeated Walford 26
The girls played extremely well, defeating the Open A Walford team 47 to 26. The girls attacked the basket well and worked together in offence to create lots of scoring opportunities. Defence in the first half was very strong, stopping Walford from scoring for most of the start. The girls played very well and worked hard down both ends of the court. – Sarah Matheson (Captain)

Middle A – Saints 24 defeated Walford 13
A great win by the girls. After a tight first half which ended with the scores level, our defence really picked up in the second half led by Willow Stewart-Rattray, Sophie Ricciuto and Ellie Humphrey, which resulted in steals and turnovers and some easy layups. With everyone starting to take and make their shots, the standard has really improved. Well done. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 2 defeated by Walford 25
It is a big learning experience for these girls and we are using games to also learn about and improve our fundamentals. We struggled early to get the ball over half way but then Charlotte Norman stepped up and was able to get the ball into offence so we could put up some shots, unfortunately they just did not go in. It was pleasing we did not give up and improved as the game went on. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle C – No game due to long weekend

ROWING

South Australian State Championships
The Rowing State Championships were held on 2 and 3 March. The Saturday was meant to be when we competed in most of our races for the Inter and Senior crews but, due to the hot weather and some niggling injuries, we ended up not racing at all. It was a disappointment for us and the squad as it was something that we had targetted for the season, but that is rowing and you can’t control the weather. The Inters, however, did get another crack at racing on the Sunday in the U17 4x+ which was also a lot kinder with weather. The girls had their heat in the morning and it was the first 4 from each heat to qualify for the final. Unfortunately for the B quad, they just missed out, but that is to take nothing away from them because they had two Juniors step up and race 2km for the first time. The Inter A crew finished 3rd in their heat and progressed to the final even though they had bit of a fight to get in. The final was a great hit out for the girls, racing over 2km which is a distance that they don’t normally race. They ended up coming 4th but it was a strong, consistent performance and definitely gives us something to work on.

School Premiership Series 3
This was the final regatta for the School Premiership Series and, across all year levels, the racing has been hard. Obviously, all the schools want to be represented in the A final at Head of the River which has made these regattas hard-fought.

The Juniors this season have progressed well technically and now that the crews have been a bit more settled, the girls have been able to really work together and fine tune the skills they have picked up. Although we haven’t had any wins, the girls have been improving and moving up the places, which is a positive to take from the season. We have also had many new girls start which is fantastic, and to see them learn and enjoy the sport has been brilliant. I am really looking forward to seeing how all these crews do at HoR; we may have a couple of dark horses who could surprise.

Inters have a really good chance of doing something special at HoR. For them, it is about self-belief; they definitely have the talent. Both made the A final on Saturday reasonably comfortably, as qualifying was their first target without expending too much energy. The finals were reasonable with both crews being there around the finish but just not having that final kick to stick with the winning crews. Racing is one of those things that if you are just out by 5% on the day that can mean the difference between winning and losing. The girls are looking good technically and have the fitness, it is just mindset and hopefully for them it all comes together at HoR; only time will tell.

Seniors have had an interesting season to say the least. The 1st 8 have been in the middle for the majority of the season with Seymour, Scotch and Walford out in front then us and then everyone else. They had a good row in the prelim heat which gave the girls confidence for the final. It’s funny, though, how things can change and Wildy, who have struggled all season when they have raced, came out and pipped us on the line for 4th. Even though the girls didn’t perform at their best, they did realise where they could improve and made something that could have been a negative into a positive. The 1st 4 have really worked hard to get this crew over the line and it is a credit to the girls for sticking it out. It has been hard because of the inconsistency with crew changes, injury, etc. but we are almost there and they have made it into the A final for HoR which is fantastic for them. The girls had a really good heat doing quite a quick time and it looked good for the final. They put in a really strong performance despite having a couple of hiccups before and during the race. I think these girls have shown amazing resilience this season and they should be really proud of themselves, I look forward to seeing them race at HoR. – Ben Flannagan (Director of Rowing)

SOFTBALL

Year 5/6 Blue – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour Green 11
We played two even innings and then we batted one extra half inning so the six runs we scored in that inning didn’t count. From playing that extra inning, the girls were more relaxed, knowing the score didn’t count and were able to get more safe hits. When we played the other two innings, they were really tense about the game, wanting to win too much that they overcompensated. – Steph Collet (Coach)

Year 5/6 White – Saints 7 defeated Seymour Blue 5
We only played two complete innings but the girls were very focused and had lots of fun. Besides our improved hitting and pitching, our defensive fielding has grown immensely. Charlotte Udall, Matilda Powell, Januri Wagaarachchi and Sophie Bafile all had stand-out defensive plays. Pitching and catching was strong and the girls are having lots of fun playing together. – Jess Dreswick (Coach)

Year 5/6 Silver – Saints 7 defeated by Seymour 9
This was a very evenly matched game throughout, despite a slow start by Saints. Olivia Reynolds and Aurelia Pyne both pitched consistently, with Bettina Dal Cin and Milana Troon doing well catching for an innings each. The team’s batting was far more confident in the second innings. Good game girls. – Louisa Mitchell (Supervisor)

Year 3-4 – Saints Blue 14 drew with Saints White 14
It was a fun and exciting match with both teams batting well. We had only a few outs during the match as everyone ran quickly around the bases. It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm shown by the girls and their understanding of the game growing each week. Well played everyone. – Pauline Noblet (Coach)

WATER POLO

Open A – Saints 11 defeated Wilderness 3
Saints started off very strongly, dominating the play throughout the first three quarters with the score being 10-1 at 3/4 time. At this point, we moved our goalie Saskia Jonats out of goals to play in the field. She was the best player, saving many goals as goalie and also showing her skills and versatility in being able to play very well in the field. Once again, we defeated our opposition through impressive teamwork and have maintained our undefeated position for the season. Great game again girls! – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Open B – Saints 5 defeated by Pembroke 12
The girls started off very well in the first quarter, putting up a tough fight with the score being even at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. However, although the girls kept up their great intensity and effort, Pembroke was able to pull away and widen the gap. The best player this week was Stephanie Smalls who applied a very strong defensive pressure on the Pembroke players in being able to steal balls and then lead a strong and fast attack down the pool. Great work, the team showed significant improvement. Good luck for the next game! – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Open C – Saints 19 defeated Sacred Heart 0
Saints won their first game of the year, defeating Sacred Heart 19-0. The girls worked really well as a team in both defence and attack. It was great to see many of the girls scoring goals, which is evidence that the win was a full team effort. They displayed excellent game awareness and impressive skills in keeping possession of the ball. The goalies put in an amazing effort in preventing Sacred Heart from scoring any goals. Best player was Sophie Dansie who won all four swim ups and was the highest goal scorer. Keep up the great work! – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Year 7-8 – Saints 16 defeated St Dominics 4
Saints again dominated in both offence and defence, getting away to a steady start to lead 4-1 at quarter-time. Saints doubled the score and stretched their lead in the second quarter, adding 4, with some great saves in goal from Ashlyn May. In the second half with Saints asked to focus more on defence, they used this to their advantage and created more chances, adding more goals. It was a dominant display and the girls are all improving each week. Goals: Marcella Tolley (5), Emily McCorley (4), Mathilda Thomas (3), Ashlyn May (2) and 1 each to Ayla Blaskett and Scarlett Dillon. – Neil Fuller (Acting Coach)

Enews – Week 6, Term 1 2019

Issue no. 6Enews-banner

A Touch of Royalty at Saints Girls

St Peter’s Girls’ School was delighted to host Their Excellencies, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, and Lady Cosgrove on Tuesday morning.

The Governor-General spoke to students at a special Assembly, covering the importance of education, leadership and personal values.

He also told the girls that there was nothing stopping them from ascending to the highest roles in office despite the current underrepresentation of women in leadership.

Following his speech and a Q&A session joined by Lady Cosgrove, Their Excellencies were escorted on a tour, inspecting the Maker Space, Library and Middle School. They also paused to acknowledge our Old Scholars’ War Service Honour Board.

Upon departure, His Excellency presented five girls who led the visit with special medallions. Each of them was thrilled by the opportunity to host such distinguished guests.

“The Governor-General was very nice and so was his wife; they have a great sense of humour.” – Ella Lawes

“It was such an honour to accompany Their Excellencies on the tour. It was an absolute privilege to listen to the Governor-General’s empowering insights into reaching our goals. Whether you are a royalist or not, it’s impossible not to be inspired by such an accomplished leader.” – Tia Bailey

“His Excellency spoke to us about the many, varied experiences he has encountered as a leader and what he has learnt along the way. I was lucky enough to meet Their Excellencies after the Assembly. They are both lovely, genuine people who had many interesting stories to tell and enthusiasm for what they saw at our School.” – Hannah Brown

Girls in Tech Expo

What a techtacular way to celebrate International Women’s Day! Our Girls in Tech Expo welcomed almost 200 girls from local schools to join our Year 6 and 7 students for a day of hands-on workshops with industry experts.

Highlights included piloting drones, testing out augmented reality and exploring music technology by mixing hip hop beats!

It was another excellent example of how to further expose girls to technology and the rewarding career paths associated with the field.

Learning Communities Enhance Collaboration

K MountAt the commencement of 2019, the ELC introduced a new model of two Learning Communities. This new organisational structure is designed to improve student learning and participation, as well as increasing collaboration amongst students and staff. An example of this is our intentional grouping of the children during inquiries to ensure we deliver a far richer learning experience across our learning community as a whole.

We have been operating in this way now for five weeks and have begun some initial reflections as a teaching team, such as:

• Positive friendship groupings across the rooms
• Intentional groupings with each inquiry, enabling quality delivery and active participation
• Greater collaboration between ELC Educators including the allocation of extended planning times
• The sharing of staff skillsets across the Centre
• An increase in the use of digital technologies, shown in our Learning Community 2 video
• Inclusion of dance and Atelier spaces for all children across the Centre
• Greater use of all physical spaces and resources within the Centre and beyond including further interaction with Ferguson Park
• Stronger awareness of what a community is and how collaboration enhances this
• An increase in parent voice through participation and partnership across the Centre

In addition, we are always thinking of ways we can continue to improve our communities. An essential component of any new model is time to implement and time to reflect. We are giving ourselves this time by ensuring we are enacting our ELC mission on a daily basis:

“Everyone learning side-by-side as active participants in both teaching and learning, underpinned by mutually respectful relationships and guided by optimism and open mindedness.”

We look forward to sharing further progress throughout the year as we embark on our new model and continue our research.

Year 8 Camp Highlights

W6 - Year 8 Camp

In Week 5, all four Year 8 Home Groups went to Kangaroo Island. Though not many of us enjoyed the early morning wake up on Monday, it was definitely worth it. The week was filled with activities that gave the girls a range of chances to step outside their comfort zone. It was nice to see the girls across the year level working with and encouraging students who they don’t generally work with. With my Home Group especially, I believe that camp has brought us closer as a class.

A couple of my favourites included snorkelling at Western River Cove and the beach day at Stokes Bay. As this was the first time snorkelling for a few girls including myself, we didn’t really know what to expect but once I got out there, it was absolutely beautiful and was 100% worth it to see so many fish, which I was not expecting. It was so much fun; the biggest highlight was the staff vs students battle for the tennis ball. I really enjoyed this camp and I got to learn more about my Year 8 peers.

Isobel Yelland
Year 8 student

On camp, we explored the wildlife, went swimming at pristine beaches and enjoyed a week without technology. It was really nice to see everyone bonding with each other and embracing so many new challenges. Everyone had such a fun time and it was a great opportunity to make new friends, get to know everyone better, do things outside our comfort zone and try new things. We went snorkelling and got up really close to the fish and enjoy the vibrant sea life. On the last night of camp, we had a talent show. All four Home Group classes performed a routine they made up over four days and performed it in front of their peers. It was such a fun night with lots of smiles, laughter and cheers. The biggest challenge was the 10 kilometre walk with a heavy rucksack on our backs in the heat. We all encountered many challenges whether it would be no electronics, snorkelling, missing family or cooking dinner, but we all managed to try something new and keep a smile on our faces. This camp is definitely a highlight of mine.

Reflections on Year 7 Camp

W6 - Year 7 Camp

Last week, the Year 7s took part in their Outdoor Education camp to Robe. They boogie boarded at Long Beach, visited Naracoorte Caves for adventure caving, kayaked through Lake Battye and completed an overnight hike carrying all their gear and sleeping in Little Dip National Park. Below are some quotes from the girls on some of their experiences.

“We had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to venture into the well-known Naracoorte Caves. In groups, we explored the dark passages of the Stick-Tomato Cave and were amazed at the glowing and dewy Victoria Fossil Cave. All the girls challenged themselves to the extreme by problem-solving when crawling on all fours. Overall, we valued this opportunity and had a blast along the way!”

“The overnight hike made me realise how many great facilities we have in everyday life that we take for granted. Being able to have normal toilets at home is a privilege that we will appreciate much more after this week away.”

“Kayaking was peaceful and tranquil in the lake and we learnt a lot of skills to give us more confidence when on the water.”

IMPORTANT – Traffic Safety

At St Peter’s Girls, the welfare of our students, parents and staff is paramount.

Year 2s in Code Mode

W6 - Coding

On Wednesday, the Year 2 students enjoyed an amazing afternoon filled with coding and technology. They experimented with coding robots such as Dash and Dot and Bee-Bots as well as investigating the coding apps Tynker, Osmo, Kodable and Boogie Bot. The girls were risk-takers, good communicators and exceptional thinkers, which allowed them to plan and implement coding in order to make a robot perform specific tasks. Excitement levels and enthusiasm were high and the process of cause and effect was clearly evident. What an amazing way to ignite our thinking and passion for Girls in Tech day!

“I liked Osmo because I enjoyed using the blocks to code to make Awbie jump.” – Tildy Begg

“The coding was really fun because all the activities we did were really special. My favourite was Osmo because you could control Awbie with special coding blocks.” – Bonnie Qu

“I had fun with the Bee-Bots because we made them go where we wanted and we figured out how to code them on two different paths.” – Ellerslie Wong

Year 6s Turn Back Time

W6 - Year 6

This week, our Year 6 students were introduced to the new central idea of, ‘Human migration is the response to challenges, risks and opportunities’.

As a provocation, we visited the Migration Museum and took part in the workshop ‘Unpacking Histories’. The program gave the girls the opportunity to work like historians and curators as they unpacked a suitcase to investigate, research and record the lives of different South Australians and their immigration stories.

BASKETBALL

Open – Saints 55 defeated Immanuel B2 27
The girls played extremely well, especially in defence, creating lots of turnovers and easy baskets in offence. Almost every player scored with Bella Parton 20, Indya Dodd 14 and Sivi Sivasuthan 11 the biggest contributors. Each girl worked hard, particularly in the first half. Well done on a great win. – Sarah Matheson (Captain)

Middle A – Saints 41 defeated Pulteney 4
A great game by the girls and it was pleasing to see that our shots were starting to go in. Defence was excellent as it always is and it was the offensive end where we showed great improvement. Special mentions to Willow Stewart-Rattray, Ellie Humphrey and the two Sophies – Ricciuto and Dansie – who all had an excellent game at both ends of the floor. Well Done. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 4 defeated by Immanuel 83
Tough game against a much bigger and more skilled opponent. It is hard to keep up the work effort, but I thought the girls managed to do this and ran the game out well. Scoring was always going to be difficult against such tall opponents. Special mention to Emily Elston who battled hard on the boards. – Brenton Davies (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 2 defeated by Walford 48
Unfortunately, the team came across a tall and well-drilled team who played a competitive zone defence which Saints found hard to get past to create scoring opportunities. This is a lesson we all learned and hope to work on in the coming weeks. – Sharnee Jones (Coach)

SOFTBALL

Year 5/6 Blue – Saints 3 defeated by Saints Silver 8
The girls played well but they were very distracted because they were playing against their friends and weren’t completely focused. Our fielding was good and this was the first game where we had three outs every innings instead of the other team getting 7 runs which is a step in the right direction. Our batting was the same as last game; swinging at strikes and getting a few walks. When we did get walks though, a lot of the girls hit it straight back to the pitcher for an easy out, so that’s something we can continue to work on. – Steph Collet (Coach)

Year 5/6 White – Saints 10 defeated Walford 7
The girls won their second game of the season in a home match against Walford. It was a very exciting game. Every girl brought lots of energy and excitement to the field and were dedicated to win. Pitching and fielding has improved greatly so far this season. – Jess Dreswick (Coach)

Year 5/6 Silver – Saints 8 defeated Saints Blue 3
What a great first win. It was an all-round performance with some top fielding and hitting. Well done to Olivia.

Year 3/4 Blue – game cancelled

Year 3/4 White – Saints 22 defeated Seymour 21
The girls played so well. Captain Romana Walsh hit a home run and took a very good catch. Madeleine Andrejewskis and Lauren Disney worked well together as 1st and pitcher, keeping Seymour scoreless in the second innings, with 3 up, 3 down. The team batted well; Lois Burton-Howard also scored a home run and everyone was fast around the bases. A great game girls. – Pauline Noblet (Coach)

TENNIS

Premier League – Saints 0-5 defeated by Immanuel 6-36
Singles: Mia Dodd 0-6, Ruby Deakin 3-6, Maiya Jakupec 1-6, Imogen Nienaber 0-6

Premier League Reserves – Saints 3-25 defeated by Immanuel 3-26
Singles: Charlotte Staples 4-6, Georgia Mallick 1-6, Tahlia Louca 6-2, Ella Dnistriansky 6-0

WATER POLO

Open A – Saints 9 defeated St Ignatius 3
We were unprepared for the determination and speed of St Ignatius at the beginning of the game, with the score being 1-3 down at quarter-time. We regrouped in the break and focused on moving quickly when transitioning into defence and not letting the St Ignatius players break free in their attack. The girls did an amazing job in applying a much stronger defence during the remaining three quarters, preventing St Ignatius from scoring for the rest of the game and resulting in Saints gaining possession of the ball more often, from which we were able to score. Best player this week was Matilda Braithwaite for her tight defence and strong attacking play. Well done this week! – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Open B – Saints 5 defeated by Wilderness 13
The girls played a great first half, showing that they have the skills to challenge the other teams in the A grade competition. Saints led 4-3 at half-time. Unfortunately, we were unable to maintain this lead throughout the second half as Wilderness applied greater pressure in defence and speed in attack. Best player this week was Emily Baldwinson who consistently applied strong pressure in defence against Wilderness’s best players – Nicolette Miller (Captain)

Open C – no game due to camps

Year 7-8 – no game due to camps

Enews – Week 5, Term 1 2019

Issue no. 5Enews-banner

From the Deputy Principal/Head of Middle School

Richard Lisle inside 220Following the stunning success of last year’s inaugural event, we are proud and excited to be staging our second Girls in Tech Expo next Friday 8 March. Students in Years 6 and 7 will be joined by girls from other local schools for a day of dynamic seminars and workshops hosted by industry experts.

This special event is an incredible opportunity to further expose girls to technology and the rewarding career paths associated with the field. It is also a fitting way to celebrate International Women’s Day and to launch the 2019 Search for the Next Tech Girl Superhero Challenge, a youth STEM entrepreneurship competition that encourages girls to tackle real-life problems with technology solutions.

This week, I was lucky enough to escape the road closures and heat of Adelaide for the slightly cooler and far less chaotic roads of Kangaroo Island as I accompanied our Year 8 students on their annual camp. It was a delight to see our girls and their Home Group teachers embracing the challenges that four nights under canvas in a remote, unpowered camp ground offers. Noises in the night, ants, river crossings and camp cooking that didn’t quite go ‘to plan’ were all brushed off as inconveniences, as we were lucky enough to spend time in spectacular coastal scenery, enjoying snorkelling, boogie boarding, hiking and sandboarding.

Our Year 7 staff and students were also able to relish the relief from the heat that the bushland and beaches of the Robe area offered during their week-long camp. Once again, this challenging and varied camp saw our girls getting to know each other and their Home Group teachers much better as they kayaked, hiked, surfed and explored caves in this beautiful part of the State.

One of the themes of these camps is ‘becoming comfortable being uncomfortable’, and whilst our students (and staff!) naturally achieved this to varying levels, everyone came back being able to describe at least one episode where they overcame nerves or discomfort to achieve something valuable.

Year 1s Enjoy Wellbeing Day

W5 - Wellbeing 2

Last Friday, the big girls went to the Swimming Carnival and the R – 3 girls had a special day too: it was our Wellbeing Day.

We did some meditation with Cloud so we could calm ourselves, did some yoga with Cat so we could stretch, and we made some flowers for our buddy which we did with Bella Rose. We did a maze with Huggtopus so we could get free hugs. We also made a PicCollage of a buddy and one with Bug; my buddy was Eleanor.

While I was doing the Lovey Dove heart, I was thinking about how to draw myself. When I was making the PicCollage, I was trying to think of some suggestions that we could write on it. While I was doing the maze, I had to think where to go. I learnt in yoga how to stretch my body and be relaxed. I thought Wellbeing Day was fun.

Year 3s Inspect an Insect

W5 - Laser Cutting

This term, Year 3 has been exploring all things animals, including the very smallest living on our planet. Last week, the girls put on their biologist detective hats and went searching around the School’s gardens for different types of local invertebrates.

Upon returning to the classroom, they researched and created fact files about some of the insects, arachnids and crustaceans found at St Peter’s Girls and in the wider Adelaide region. To educate our community and bring some added colour to our playground, we laser cut our drawings of our insects and engraved QR codes that directly link to our fact files for everyone to explore and enjoy.

New Blue Belts Pack a Punch

W5 - Blue Belt

The Year 11 PE girls completed their Blue Belt grading in self-defence this week. Since Week 1, they have worked on their punch and kick routines, throw-downs, partner sparring and defending random attacks.

The girls performed at a high level on their assessment day, which was quite warm inside the Gym. They had to maintain concentration for a long period of time and were able to do so superbly. They will next begin to look at Principles of Play and exercise physiology in relation to the sport of Korfball.

Drama-Packed Outing for Year 9s

W5 - Drama 2

On Thursday, the Year 9 Drama classes were fortunate to attend a physical theatre performance called Out of Chaos by Adelaide company Gravity and Other Myths. Not knowing what to expect or even what physical theatre was, we were electric with excitement. There were many other schools there, like us, intrigued and buzzing. And what a performance it was! Almost indescribable feats of bending, stretching, acting, even flying! Whilst taking in the performance was amazing, looking around at the other girls, their faces struck with wonder and bewilderment, was equally entertaining.

Seeing this show has made us all the more excited for this coming year of Drama. We are thrilled with anticipation ahead of a workshop next term where visiting actors/performers will teach us all more about physical theatre.

Saints Girl’s Brush with Fringe

W5 - Fringe

One of our talented students, Year 6 Zoë O’Callaghan, will be performing in a Fringe show called Musical Moments by Promise Adelaide.

If you love musical theatre, you will love this performance. Promise specialises in creating performance opportunities for South Australia’s up and coming music and theatre stars under the age of 21.

With Musical Moments, each of the Fringe performances features hits from popular shows such as Les Miserables, Wicked and Grease as well as lesser known material from new Broadway shows and films. Each show has a different cast, with a diverse selection of songs. There is something for everyone to enjoy in the often eclectic mix of numbers.

You can book tickets via www.adelaidefringe.com.au

“I am really looking forward to performing in Musical Moments, my second Fringe show with Promise Adelaide. It’s a really entertaining show where all the songs are from musicals. Each performer sings a solo and a small group number, and the whole cast also does two songs together which is really good fun. I have been performing since I was 5 when I started dance training, which I still do. I love anything to do with performing – singing, dancing and acting. My favourite genre is music theatre because you get to do all three at the same time.”

BASKETBALL

Cancelled due to heat

ROWING

School Premiership Series 2
Conditions were perfect with a slight breeze and great water for rowing. The Year 9s were first off with their heats and it was great to see how well they all did. Most of our crews placed well and are looking good for Head of the River. Technically, I think many of the girls are performing well and seem to be handling themselves well up against some of the bigger schools. All made it through to their respective A finals and although we had no wins, we were right in the mix.

The Year 8s are still learning about racing, so it is great to watch because they normally just go for it which makes it exciting. Much of what we do with them as coaches is trying to get the basics right, laying the foundations. Sometimes, under race conditions, those foundations get a little shaky but it’s all about learning and understanding what needs to be done in a race situation. They are getting there, it will just take time and patience.

Inters have had a pretty good season getting many wins and placing. It is a very competitive year with the winner in both grades changing every week. Both crews have really set themselves up nicely for HoR and, with one School Premiership Series regatta to go, we are hoping big things will happen from the girls. I don’t think it so much about how they row, but their own self-belief and being mentally strong and positive.

Seniors are improving with every race. Overall, I think their coaches are really happy. It is all about consistency in everything they do; consistency of training, consistency of technique, consistency through racing. I believe, as a whole, the Senior squad are understanding this; get the process right and the consistency will come. – Ben Flannagan (Director of Rowing)

TOUCH FOOTBALL

Open A – Saints 2 defeated by Wilderness 6
The improvement from the previous week was excellent and each player improved throughout the game allowing us to score twice in the second half. The girls used set play to help Ella sprint through a gap in the opposition’s defence and score. Eve Habel and Hannah Freeman set up a ‘quickie’ on the score line where Hannah did a great dive. Best player goes to Hannah as she was determined and committed to every move she completed. Good effort girls, looking forward to building for the next game! – Eve Habel (Captain)

Open B – Saints 6 defeated Pembroke 1
Saturday was a great way to start off our season after having a bye the week before. We went out there running at speed and held Pembroke scoreless for the first half. It was excellent teamwork by everyone to score the tries, especially with our rucking and breaking through holes. Awesome game girls, bring on the next match. – Taylah Gabrisch (Coach)

Open C1 – Saints did not play

Open C2 – Saints 3 defeated Wilderness 1

Middle A – Saints 8 defeated Pembroke 3
The Middle A team played a fast-paced game against Pembroke. The girls continued on from the previous week with some beautiful rucking which gave them strong momentum through the middle and set up a number of tries. The girls are working on their wraps close to the line and this improved as the game wore on, catching out Pembroke in 2 on 1 situations numerous times. Our defence was better in the second half when our wingers placed more pressure on their opponent, refusing to allow them space to receive and run with the ball. Great to have our first win of the year and even the ledger at 1-1. Try scorers were Ellie Humphrey 3, Adele Russell 2, Madison Liddy 1, Pearl Richards 1 and Grace Richards 1. But you can’t score alone in touch football and all girls were involved in the set-up of tries during the game. – Dan Searle (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 7 defeated St Dominic’s 0
The girls played really well, working together as a team in defence, stopping St Dominic’s scoring any tries. Isobel Yelland provided guidance and direction in both attack and defence. The team worked hard using a shooter and then all moving up in defence, making it much harder for the opposition to score. Apurva Ichalkaranje did a great job scoring two tries after playing with the Middle C team. Our communication skills improved on the field, allowing us get more scoring opportunities. It was an amazing second game for the season and hopefully we can keep it up. – Charlie Piper

VOLLEYBALL

Open A – Saints 2 defeated Westminster 1 (25-13, 25-14, 20-25)
The team’s early arrival at the away venue showed the commitment to the squad and the year ahead. Not being intimidated in the warm up by Westminster’s tactics, the girls started strongly in both sets 1 and 2, setting us up for a resounding win. Westminster had little answer to Charlotte White in the front row, who was backed up by strong serving from Anna White and Georgina Keough, underpinning the strength and confidence this team has in its skills and style. In the 3rd set, having already won the match, we changed player positions and while we started slowly at 1-10, we worked back into the set only to just lose it 20-25. The never-say-die effort by all players, with one memorable 3rd pass chase-down by Georgina Keough to the back wall smacking it back over to win the point, shows great signs for the rest of the season. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open B – Saints 2 defeated Westminster 1 (25-21, 25-21, 13-25)
Welcoming new faces Paris Greene, Charlotte Cohen and Ruby Deakin into the Open B squad, the team started with a standard front row setter system. Confusion reigned, so we switched back into a more advanced 6-2 system and regained the lead, finishing the first set strongly. Starting the second set as we finished the first, Ankita Rajbhoj and Ruby Deakin served strongly to put Westminster on the back foot. Tilly McCormack’s dominance at the net helped secure the win. Similar to the A Grade, having won the match, we moved players into new positions in the third set trying different combinations with some good results. – Alistair Keough (Coach)

Open C – Saints 1 defeated by Westminster 2 (21-25, 25-19, 24-26)
The girls put in a spirited effort, losing a tough battle. In the first set, Saints made multiple simple errors but nearly snuck away with a win with some great serving from Jenna Bowden. The team improved in every aspect in the second set, claiming a deserved win with Candy Feng also serving well, winning many points. Saints looked to be in a commanding position in the final set with some great rallies and saves from the back-court. Westminster, however, were resilient with a dominant server who Saints found hard to return to. – Neil Fuller (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 3 defeated Westminster 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-22)
The team worked really well on setting the ball up and finishing points with a spike. Some areas to work on for the next game are service reception and taking high balls on the fingers. MVP Ruby Deakin. – Vicki Dent (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 2 drew with Westminster 2
This was a tense struggle between two evenly-matched teams. Saints worked well on pushing the ball deep over the opposition attack line. There are areas the team can continue to improve upon including working on getting the first pass up to the setter in position two. MVP this week was Izzy Gilroy. – Vicki Dent (Coach)

Middle C – Saints 3 defeated Concordia 0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22)
Saints put in a great effort to record 3 strong sets. The focus was on serving and this improved throughout the game, enabling the team to win many points. Rebecca Holloway, Ruby Powell and Efua Yawson were all consistent in this key element of the game. Eliza Monaghan had an outstanding game with her net coverage, positioning and pressure on the opposition players. – Neil Fuller (Coach)
