From the Director of Early Learning

Building a Sustainable Community

One of my first goals as a leader of the Early Learner’s Centre was to create and build a sustainable community. Recognising that this job entailed far more than one person, I created a group that held its identity as The Friends of ELC. Inspired in these early times by my research on the value a community plays in the partnership of educating young children, I was determined to find ways of reaching out. The concept of The Friends of ELC was established around working together with families to invite and include more families into the life of the ELC. Early childhood represents a period of time where families create new communities as their children enter a social dynamic and potentially form friendships for life. I wonder sometimes, as we reflect on our journey, if we give enough value to what we have created.

It is a privilege for me to work each year alongside a dedicated group of volunteers whose primary goal is to build a strong community in the ELC. Together, we think of ways in which to welcome new families, bring our community together and offer opportunities for families to be involved in their children’s learning. It is also important to have parent voice in our ELC and often I use this group as a means of getting feedback about new initiatives and plans. We also like to reach out beyond just the parent group into the wider community group and over time have had grandparent representatives on our committee. Like everything, the group and its operations have evolved but the essential reasons for establishing the group have remained at its core.

2016 Friends of ELC

Friends of ELC Email

With an exceptional committee, 2016 has been an extraordinary year. The group decided to fundraise for a robot, inspired by the incredible ground-breaking work that was already occurring in the Hallett Room. I remember the meeting when one of our mums said “We may as well aim for the stars”. I felt empowered by the energy and enthusiasm of the committee and knew that our community would support to the best of their ability. Although its chief aim is not to raise money, the Friends of ELC love to support the teaching and learning program and where possible provide for things that may be otherwise out of our reach. I am truly amazed at how quickly we have raised the major component of funds for our robot. Having our own robot in 2017 will enable us to have unlimited use and share the learning beyond just the Hallett Room. With an excess of $15,000 raised we are very close now to being able to order the robot. The sense of achievement felt by our community will also be a highlight, recognising that as a team we can achieve great things and indeed aim for the stars!

I would like to thank the energy of the 2016 Friends of ELC but also acknowledge the hard work of the many groups before them. A legacy has been left by each of these groups; their energies and passion for community have also been strong and determined. It has become very evident that the importance of giving time on a committee is highly valued. Time and advocacy for the cause ignites passion in others. Each group has enabled me to be even more in touch with my community and think beyond the walls and space of the ELC grounds. The initiative of the very first group in 2009 has lived on and I am indeed extremely proud to have been part of every group that has left their significant trace on the life at ELC.

Careers Networking Breakfast 2016

Careers networking breakfast

On Wednesday 17 August St Peter’s Girls hosted the inaugural Careers Networking Breakfast in the Arts Centre. The aim of the breakfast was to assist students to make informed choices about their career paths so that they can select appropriate school subjects and tertiary courses. By partnering our students with an Old Scholar who can speak to their areas of interest, we hoped to provide students with access to real world insights into vocational fields to inform these important decisions.

Years 10, 11 and 12 students attended the breakfast and were joined by 17 Old Scholars who generously gave up their time to mentor our girls.  Students were allocated to tables based on their career preferences and these were Science, Medicine, Business, Accounting, Real Estate, Psychology Journalism, Law and Health Sciences. Students were also encouraged to speak to as many of the mentors as possible.

Feedback from both our old scholars and students who attended has been outstanding. The Old Scholars, in particular, were pleased to have the opportunity to return to their School and commented on the confidence of our girls, as one Old Scholar put it, the “delightful girls the school is cultivating.”

Many of the girls have the contact details of the mentors and are hoping to develop these bonds in the future. As a student commented, “I appreciated that the Old Scholars had experienced life in our shoes and the instant connection of being Saints Girls made it easy to talk with them. I learnt a lot about the reality of leaving school as well as starting university and what I should expect. The fact that we were speaking with women who have already achieved their goals in life was really inspiring, especially as they were once in our exact position. It was really interesting to discuss their journey through school and university, and finally, into the work force. The sit-down nature of the breakfast also allowed us to have lots of time to ask questions and have deep conversations about a similar interest which was really beneficial.”

I would like to thank Megan McCormack (Development Officer – Old Scholar Liaison) and Fiona McGregor (Development Officer – Fundraising and Events) for their help with the organisation of the event, and also to the staff who attended on the morning. Finally, the event would not have been possible without the generous support of our Old Scholars and I look forward to forging new and lifelong associations for our students with this network, which they will also be a part of in the future.

Sisters of the Church Music Festival

Perth Tour

Last week 23 talented musicians from Years 7 to 12 were lucky enough to go to Perth College to participate in the Sisters of the Church Music Festival. This event is held every two years and is quickly becoming a highlight on the Music calendar. Our girls spent the week playing some fantastic music with other like-minded students from our Sister Schools. We combined to make a 60-piece orchestra and 50-piece choir to perform some really beautiful music, including a specially commissioned piece for the festival composed by Australian writer Dan Walker. The piece entitled “The Heart that Stirs the Ever-Beating Sea” was a highlight of the concert. The work was truly beautiful and featured a hymn written by one of the Sisters of the Church “God Guard You”.

The Head of Music at Perth College, Mr Chris Goff, spent many hours arranging music especially for the concert and the girls thoroughly enjoyed performing the high energy ‘Rockatorio’ including charts like ‘We are Family’, ‘Higher Ground’ and the highlight for the choir, playing the Kazoo as part of ‘It’s a long way to the Top’ by AC/DC. Each school also featured at the concert. We performed two very contrasting works: Inspirare Spirito for choir, featuring Cheri Wong on violin (we recently performed this piece at the Anglican Schools Conference at the convention centre), and ‘Hit me with a Hot Note’, a jazz swing chart. With this latter piece the girls were able to let their hair down and demonstrate their musical diversity.

Throughout the week we also had a chance go on a few excursions and see a little of Perth, including their City Centre and Performing Arts Academy (WAAPA) and Kings Park.

This Festival is a very special event as it celebrates the Community of the Sisters of the Church and the special connections we have with our Sister Schools. Strong bonds of friendship are created during the week as the staff and students connect with each other and come together not only through music, but also through a sense of community and belonging to something bigger than just our own schools.

I encourage all music girls to consider being a part of this very special tour when we travel to Hobart in 2018.

Lacrosse

Saints 16 defeated Seymour 5

The fourth match of the Judy Thurgood Trophy series was played with Saints hosting Seymour who were unfortunately down several players, so some Saints girls were lent to the team and the match was under way. Saints Girls got off to a quick start and were leading 7-1 by quarter time. The second and third quarters were much closer, with Seymour outscoring Saints 2-1 in the third, but then Saints finished off strongly with a 4-0 shut out in the last quarter to run out winners 16 goals to 5. Saints goal machine, Chelsea Walls, scored half of Saints’ goals. Goal scorers: Chelsea Walls 8, Harriet Maerschel, Portia Maerschel, Millisent Wilkin 2 each, Sophie Auricht, Stephanie Smalls 1 each.

Soccer

Year 6 – Saints 4 defeated St Andrews 1

A much better performance from the girls this week as we bounced back from a disappointing loss last week. The girls made sure to put in their best efforts and it certainly paid off. Our defence was much stronger and our attack was just as good. Well done to Lucy for scoring all four goals and Caitlin and Annabelle who were brave enough to go in goals. Vincent Talladira (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 12 defeated St Andrews 0

They played really well limiting the other team to 2 shots all game which were saved with ease by our goalkeeper Adelaide Murphy. The goal scorers where Eleanor Humphrey 4, Olivia Slivak 3, Maiya Jakupec 2, Emily Bryce 3. Excellent team performance. By Charlie (Coach)

Year 4 – Saints 2 drew with Walford 2

At the end of the game the girls were so happy they all came running over shouting, “We half won!” This game was easily the girls’ best so far. They executed the game plan by keeping control of the ball and passing it effectively. Congratulations to Molly Johnson who scored the first goal and Elizabeth McKernan who scored the second. Alannah Godfrey, Levanya DeSilva and Jenna Maione all played well, clearing the ball out of defence and setting up many options up forward. We welcomed the inclusion of Sophia Langley who showed good signs in her first game. The girls are looking forward to implementing their new game plan in the coming weeks. Mark Routley (Coach)

Badminton

Congratulations to the B and C1 teams for their excellent performance on Saturday. The girls played some very tough matches and we are very proud of them for coming out victorious. Hockey

Open A – Saints 2 defeated Immanuel 0

There was no score during the first half as Saints and Immanuel both battled to gain possession. However, in the second half Saints raised the intensity and were strong over the ball, creating goal scoring opportunities. Grace Packer and Alice Tyson ran hard in the midfield, Carla Lawrence and Grace Edwards (GK) played brilliantly in the back lines, and strikers Lara Khoury and Rachael Disney had some excellent attacking opportunities. Goal scorer was Natasha Hammond (2). Dan Searle (Coordinator)

Open C – Saints 3 defeated Immanuel 2

The girls started strongly, putting away an early goal to get them ahead. As the game carried on, the whole team worked hard back in defence as Immanuel linked together to quickly get past our midfield lines. Fortunately, we were able to win the game with a final score of 3-2. Well done to all of the players, especially proving that with strength and determination you are able to come out on top!  Sophie Fry (Coach)

Lacrosse

Under 18 – Saints did not play

Under 15 – Saints did not play

Under 13 – Saints 12 defeated by Brighton 15

Stephanie Smalls (Year 7) did very well in the centre as she managed to win the ball a majority of the time and gain much needed possession. In defence Isabel Burmester (Year 5) and Jenna Maione (Year 4) both caused turnovers and carried the ball well under pressure. At half-time the girls were down by six goals and therefore everyone needed to keep fighting to get back in front. In the second half Stephanie Demmrich (Year 7) was our goalie and saved several shots, which helped even out the score. Portia Maerschel (Year 7) scored a number of wonderful goals and positioned herself in the right place to be the next pass. Even though the girls lost, they did a tremendous job in the second half. Goal scorers for the match were Portia Maerschel and Stephanie Smalls. Best players were Portia Maerschel, Stephanie Smalls and Stephanie Demmrich. Portia Reppucci (Lacrosse Captain)

Netball

Open A – Saints 29 defeated by Immanuel 55

The Saints team put up a good fight in a game that we all knew was going to be tough. Well done to all of the girls for their consistent efforts and persistence in keeping the Immanuel lead to a minimum. Special mention to Grace Dawson for her amazing work in defence that put constant pressure on the Immanuel shooters. Heads up, girls, and looking forward to our final shield game of the season against Walford this weekend. Josephine Dal Pra and Madison Bateman (Co-Captains)

Open B – Saints 28 defeated by Immanuel 75

The girls played very well, considering we were up against a competitive Immanuel team. Throughout the quarters the girls improved in controlling the ball when it was in their possession and even managed to deflect a couple of passes from the other team. This was probably going to be our toughest competition of the season so the players did very well to score as many goals as we did. A huge thank you to Nicolette Miller who came out to fill in and she did an excellent job in the goal circle. Alexandra Murray (Open B Captain)

Open C – Saints 7 defeated by Immanuel 70

I am very proud of the Open C team who came out on Saturday prepared for a very tough game, and faced Immanuel with only 7 players. Although the score does not reflect it, the girls played a competitive game; they had plenty of ball and many shots at goal, which was great to see against such a strong team. Once again, Saints were gracious in their defeat and exhibited a great sportsmanship attitude on court throughout the game. It is great to see the team working hard and implementing skills worked on in training. Grace Russo (Coach)

Year 10 – Saints 42 defeated Immanuel 31

The girls had a strong start in the first quarter against Immanuel, having a strong lead against them already. The girls continued to hold their lead in front of Immanuel and it was a great game to watch. Best players were Holly Steer and India Deere. Alana Coppock (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 49 defeated Immanuel 29

Despite a slow start the score was tied at 10-all at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter we all stepped up and focussed on playing our own game, which gave us a lead of 11 goals. Our goalies, Nicolette Miller and Brooke Elliott, worked extremely well together in the circle and accurately scored many goals. Each of the centre court players and defenders played equally as good a game, getting many intercepts, having accurate passes and picking up all loose balls. This was very exciting and impressive, considering we only had 7 players and it was our first win against Immanuel for some time. Well done to all the girls for a great game and putting in 100% effort! Tahlia Towers (Year 9)

Year 9B – Saints 32 defeated Immanuel 18

This week’s game was an excitement-filled game. At the start of the first quarter, the girls weren’t playing their best netball, but were still able to be tied 7 to 7 at the first break. In the second quarter the girls worked together to get the ball down the court and shot some goals, resulting in them leading by 5 goals at half-time. The team managed to keep their lead in the third quarter, having the score of 23 to 16, and then dominated the final quarter, shooting 9 goals to 2! Overall, the game was great, and the end score was 32 to 18, Saints’ way. Isabella Villani (Year 9)

Year 9C1 – Saints 19 defeated Immanuel 14

Another fantastic win for the girls this week. Remaining consistent throughout the season, the girls worked hard, encouraged each other and pushed themselves throughout the game. Neve McCormack and Amy Rice worked very well together in the ring to shoot our much-needed goals, and some great second efforts and strong leads from Molly Lucas, Emily Brophy and Olivia Law in the mid-court were also fantastic to see. Very well done to all the girls this week on maintaining our undefeated season! Ellana Welsby (Coach)

Year 9C2 – Saints 7 defeated by Immanuel 11

The girls have played one of their best games, despite losing. The girls were evenly matched, making for a well-fought game; all players deserve a special mention for their efforts this week. A special thank you to Amy Rice, Hannah Lunn and Emily Brophy for staying back and helping us out as we were down a few players. The shooters, Ebony Lohe and Asha Short, also deserve a special mention for both playing extremely well and working hard in the ring with their tall defenders. The girls should be very proud of their efforts this week, as they played exceptionally well as a team and are finishing the term off well. Chelsea Stamato (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 28 defeated by Immanuel 40

Once again we played three great quarters of netball this week, while it was the second quarter that let us down. We came out at quarter time with the score line even and happy with efforts across the court. Unfortunately, this intensity and momentum didn’t carry into the second quarter where Immanuel gained a nine goal lead. To the girls’ credit, they came out strongly after the half-time break and maintained an even score line once again. The overall score doesn’t reflect the quality netball that our girls played against a strong opposition side. Thank you to Paris Robinson for coming out and filling in this week. Vanessa Brooks (Coach)

Year 8B – Saints 19 defeated Immanuel 10

All the girls from attack to defence applied great pressure on the opposition, and special mention to all defenders for holding the opposing team to minimum goal attempts. A big thank you to Sarah Wishart and Isabella Bernardi for playing in this team, as we were short on players. Best players to Lauren Porter and Imogen Parkinson for showing great improvement. Emily Wishart (Coach).

Year 8C – Saints 15 defeated by Immanuel 32

The girls got off to a great start this week against Immanuel. Each centre pass was executed fantastically, with the girls accurately doing the set plays practised at training. Ellen and Faye worked well in the ring and their movement and persistence was great to see, considering it was their first time working together as shooters. Down the court Stella and Emily worked well to apply pressure. Our passing in the second half let us down and allowed Immanuel to get a solid lead; however, the girls should be proud of their determination. As part of a team through the season each player has continued to improve, which is the most important thing! Well done, girls. Amy Wishart and Sophia West (Coaches)

Year 7A – Saints 16 defeated by Immanuel 19

The team met with some tough competition on Saturday, which saw us record our first loss of the season. Wet conditions saw us struggling to maintain possession of the ball, despite strong defence from everyone on court. Great work from Gemma as Goalkeeper and Olivia as Centre. Michelle Blackburn (Coach)

Year 7B – Saints 2 defeated by Immanuel 25

Despite a promising first quarter by Saints, Immanuel proved to be too strong in a very one-sided game. The girls had an opportunity to try some new combinations this week, some of which seem promising, giving us something to work towards in our final game. Roger Mills (Coach)

Junior Basketball

Year 6 Blue – Saints

Amy Wishart and Sophia West (Coaches)

Year 6 White – Saints 26 defeated Walford 16

Despite initially being a player down, the team rallied together and showed their true grit! The team would like to put a special shout out to Bridgette Leach in Grade 5 who graciously joined our team at the very last minute and proved that she was a commanding force on the court, defending with skill and hustle! Great work, my Saints Swans! Abby Davey (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints Blue 20 defeated Saints White 18

It was a tightly fought and fast-paced game between the two Saints teams. The White team got away to a good start with plenty of scoring opportunities, but the ball didn’t always ‘drop’. The Blue team then fought their way back with good teamwork and had a good lead at three quarter time. The White team created more scoring chances which they converted in the final quarter. The Blue team held their nerve, though, and won by two points. For the White team, Ruby Richards (2), Grace Richards (4) and Pearl Richards (4) combined well to move the ball down the court to create scoring opportunities. Noa Goddard played a good game in the mid-court, intercepting well. Sophie Dansie and Emily Bryce (8) continued their good work all over the court, rebounding well and providing good cover defence. For the Blue, Georgie Owler was best player and scored 10 points, Eleanor Humphrey scored 6 points, Phoebe Black, who had her best game this season, positioned well for open shots and scored 2 points, and Pearl Richards scored 2 points. Charlotte McKee played well in defence, rebounding and assisting the transitioning of fast breaks by Eleanor. Samantha McKee (White Coach) and Sharon Tocher-Leach (Blue Coach)

Junior Netball

Year 4 Blue – Saints 11 defeated Walford 4

It was great to have everyone contributing all across the court. With several skilful and well-timed passages of play, the team were able to convert many goals, with countless turnovers through the mid-court and defensive end. Many players deflected and intercepted passes and also chased down stray balls with determination, but Florence Russell’s stats were more than impressive, as she achieved 13 turnovers in total. Marcella Tolley shot the majority of our goals but all players showed good movement, working hard to get good position for passes. Special mention must go to Scarlett Dillon and Amy Dillon for assisting the White Team for a half game each, due to an absent player. Great team spirit, girls! Sue Jones (Coach)

Year 4 White – Saints 11 defeated Walford 4

The girls worked really well to get the ball and get in down to the shooters, which has been worked on at trainings. Using their enthusiasm and energy, the girls were able to use the techniques and skills they have learnt, including dodging, getting in front and a new centre pass drill. Overall, the girls had a great game and hopefully will have many more to come. Alexandra Reade (Assistant Coach)

Soccer

Open A – Saints 1 defeated Walford 0

The Open A soccer team had a fantastic 1-0 win against Walford in the final match of the season, scoring in the last minutes of the match. In a very exciting game, the girls played really well, working extremely hard in midfield and strongly and consistently in defence. Thanks to all the girls, coach, Saša Tadic, and soccer co-ordinator, Peter Krantis, for a great season. Krystina Dianos (Captain of Soccer)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Walford 1

Overall everyone played a great last game of the season. The girls were unlucky to concede early, but fought back hard in what was a very even match. It was also good to see more shots at goal this week. Victoria Gilroy and Amelia Wood were both very reliable and Lucinda Tierney played a great first game back.  I hope everyone has enjoyed the season and continues with soccer next year. By Christine Gayen (Coach)

Middle A – Saints had a bye

Middle B – Saints 3 defeated Pulteney 1

For the final match of the season the girls once again put everything into the game. The team demonstrated how much they have improved with their passing, creating numerous scoring opportunities. This was one of the best team games they have played and everyone contributed, even when playing in new positions. It has been a pleasure to coach the girls this season and they made the experience absolutely amazing. Taylor Garrett (coach)

Year 7 – Saints 0 defeated by Immanuel 15

The girls came up against a very physical side. They never gave up and kept trying to the end. Special mention to Edith and Rose who ran all day against much bigger opponents. Even though the team has not won a game for the season, they have shown improvement every week. It has been a pleasure to coach this team. Peter Krantis (Coach)

From the Head of Senior School

KerrySkinner_webLast week I had the pleasure of witnessing the Year 11/12 drama production, The Silver Lining. It was an exceptional production, written and directed by their teacher, Michael Butler-Wills. As an audience member, I was in awe of how these students embraced all components of the show, and their creativity and abilities were outstanding.

Performance is a major assessment task in Drama and this can sit as a real challenge for many. I admire these young teenagers who place themselves on stage. Audiences can be, and mostly are, critical, and yet our students used this nervous energy, accepted the risk and rose to the occasion.

To delve deeper into what it takes to be a performer I understand that they need to remember a multitude of lines, know where to stand, how to move, interact with others, project their voice, be blinded by lights, have some audiences laugh but some not, and remain calm, all whilst knowing they are being assessed. Our students appeared as if they were not concerned with any of the factors that come into play in a performance. They performed with confidence, were in control and are to be commended on their approach to this challenging experience.

I was most impressed with the artistic talents of our Senior students in music, dance and drama. Mr Butler-Wills truly captured the skills of this cohort by weaving these elements cleverly into the production. I congratulate all staff involved and trust the parents and students who saw this production were also in awe of the skills of the students at Saints.

I was also privileged to attend our inaugural Senior School careers networking breakfast this Wednesday. It was wonderful to see Old Scholars return to share insights into their day-to-day tasks in a range of vocations. The dialogue centred on what happens in real life and I am absolutely positive that the learning that occurred will support our Senior students make informed decisions about their subjects and have a better understanding of pathways and tertiary options available. Old Scholars shared experiences in the Sciences, Medicine, Business, Commerce, Accounting, Real Estate, Psychology, Journalism, Law and Health Sciences. It was valuable for our senior girls to see the passion from our guests about what they are doing, how they got there and, most importantly, value the education that Saints gave them. The opportunity provided to our Senior students with current information and to establish connections was due to the hard work of Karen Alderson (Careers Counsellor), Megan McCormack (Old Scholar Liaison) and Fiona McGregor (Events).

I thank the Old Scholars who gave their time to ensure that this event was successful. On behalf of the students, your insights into the world of work and the opportunity to establish connections in highly competitive professions will be invaluable.

Student Voice: Back to the 1980s with Kilburn House Dinner

Kilburn House Dinner

Friday 5 August saw the Kilburn cohort travel back in time to the 80s for the evening. The night featured many 80s hits from Olivia Newton John, The Blues Brothers, members of The Breakfast Club, punk rockers and, of course, many girls in their mothers’ finest party and bridesmaid dresses.

The Year 11s created a nostalgic atmosphere for the Year 12 parents and staff who attended, with posters from the 80s covering the Art Centre walls, fluorescent decorations and, of course, the hottest 80s tunes. Throughout the night all of the girls had the chance to participate in the traditional Kilburn ‘Guess the Year 12 baby’, various 80s quizzes and a whole lot of dancing.

After dancing the night away I believe this House Dinner was definitely one of the best. On behalf of Kilburn House I send out a big thank you to the Year 11 girls for organising this whole event. I also thank Mrs Alderson, Ms Charlesworth and all of the parent helpers for assisting in making the night run smoothly. I am positive that all Year 12s had a great night and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The Incredible Journey of Australia’s Women’s Eight – Featuring Old Scholar, Olympia Aldersey (Kennion ’11)

Olympia Aldersey was handed a last minute berth to the Rio 2016 and she’s certainly been making the most of it, as shown in the video that can be viewed here.

Her Olympic experience began rather unexpectedly, with her crew, Australia’s women’s rowing eight, receiving a last minute call-up to compete at the games following the shock withdrawal of several of the Russian teams in the wake of an ongoing doping controversy.

Olympia’s crew raced impressively across both of their races, finishing 4th in their heat and 5th in the repechage race as all crews battled for a place in the final.

We would like to congratulate Olympia on her amazing performances at the Olympics and for representing Saints Girls so well on the world stage!

The Enchante Reunion Choir

Reunion Choirb

On Sunday 7 August, 18 of our Enchante Old Scholars from 2006 – 2015 happily reunited in a celebration of song. It was wonderful to catch up, sing together, share stories and talk about the good old days! Many students are currently studying Music at tertiary level or have completed either Bachelor of Music or Education degrees specialising in Music. Needless to say, the Enchante girls of old were in good form and are currently rehearsing for our upcoming Cabaret on 16 September. Rehearsals are each Sunday at 3.30pm and any Old Scholars who have been in Enchante are asked to contact me via email if you would like to be involved.

There will also be an Old Scholars’ Band so if you are an Old Scholar instrumentalist and would like to be involved in the Old Scholars’ Band, please contact either Miss Rounsevell or myself.

The band is already sounding great and the Enchante Reunion Choir will be performing two gospel pieces which are sure to raise the roof, so make sure you save the date!

How are the students for EDGE selected?

Becca-Burton-HowardThere is often much discussion around the selection process for a withdrawal program such as EDGE (Extended, Differentiated, Gifted Education), as it can appear to be a secret club where entry is by some arbitrary set of achievements. Therefore, I thought I’d share how the decisions for EDGE are made here at St Peter’s Girls.

Data is our starting point. We use a wide variety of different sources: class data collected by the teachers through their assessment process, summative data collected at the end of a unit, NAPLAN and PAT testing. However data is only the start of the process in building the full picture of the child as a learner. A student is more than just a set of numbers so we look beyond to gain a further understanding of our girls through: observations, psychological reports and in-depth conversations with teaching staff. No decision is ever taken lightly on the make-up of each EDGE group.

We have to consider the domain of each EDGE cycle to ensure that it is the right intervention, at the right time, for the right student. This means that students may enter and exit the program at a variety of different points during the year. The result of this is that there is no permanent group of EDGE students. Each term we concentrate on a different focus within the sessions, including STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), critical literacy, philosophy or humanities. With such a wide variety of areas we need to have a fluid approach to identification, returning to the qualitative and quantitative data every time to identify the next cohort.

Winter Interhouse

In perfect conditions students in Years 7 – 12 represented their Houses in the main Winter sports (Badminton, Netball, Hockey and Soccer). There was great camaraderie but also a high level of competition, which was evident in a number of close scores as each sport competed for shields.

Results:

Badminton: 1st Kilburn, 2nd Patteson, 3rd Kennion, 4th Selwyn
Hockey: 1st Selwyn, equal 2nd Kennion and Patteson, 4th Kilburn
Netball: 1st Kennion, 2nd Kilburn, 3rd Selwyn, 4th Patteson
Soccer: 1st Kennion, 2nd Kilburn, 3rd Patteson, 4th Selwyn

Swimming

More results from the recent State Short Course Championships, with Lily-Rose Spartalis (Year 7) qualifying for 13 events and achieving personal best performances in every event. She had three fourth placings and an individual medal.

Badminton

A very big well done to Sarah Ienco (Staff) who recently won the State graded doubles championships, winning the final in a tough three-set match and coming from a set down: 10-21, 23-21, 21-16.

Hockey

Congratulations to Natasha Hammond (Year 12) who has been selected in the 2017 U23’s hockey Australia country development team for the third consecutive year. In January she will travel to Sarawak (Borneo), Kedah, Penang and Selangor states!

Knockout Open Netball

Open Girls Knockout Netball Semi Finals
Congratulations to the Open team who have progressed to the State Finals to be contested at Netball SA on Monday 29 August.

Saints 20 def. Glenunga 38

A strong start for the Saints Girls Open A team. Working the ball well down the court the team was able to capitalise on each turnover made. The team worked well together to secure a win and continue our knockout campaign.

Saints 32 def. Reynella East 31

Another close game saw the Open A side work well under pressure to secure yet another win. All girls work consistently and persistently as a team to make it through to the final stage of the competition. We are proud of everyone and look forward competing in the coming weeks. Madison Bateman and Josephine Dal Pra (Co-Captains)

No matches due to rain. Alice Johnswood (Director of Netball)

Year 4 White – Saints

No matches due to rain. Sue Jones (Acting coach)

Junior Soccer

Year 4 – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness 8

The girls played some of their best soccer, despite the final result. To improve from Week 1, our biggest goal was to increase how often we passed the ball. Our focus was to maintain possession by passing the ball to bring our team mates into the game, therefore demonstrating that we believed in their ability and trusted them. This week’s most improved player was Charlotte Udall who worked hard as a left forward to put herself in attacking positions and regularly win the ball. Anna Venning played a solid game as our first half goalkeeper, saving more goals than she let through. Jenna Maione was integral for the second week in a row, leading our defence. Our aim this week is to strengthen up our lines and continue to develop our skills and confidence. We are really looking forward to playing our first home game this Friday afternoon. Mark Routley (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 1 defeated by Pulteney 5

The girls put in a great effort for their first game of the term but it was against some strong opposition. We were unlucky with some of the goals we conceded and possibly could have have scored a few more. Overall still a good performance as the girls worked hard and never gave up but it shows we have plenty to work on for next week. By Vincent Talladira (Coach)

Badminton

No matches due to Interhouse.

Hockey

Lacrosse

Saints 12 defeated Pembroke 7

Facing Pembroke in a round of the Judy Thurgood Memorial Trophy, we had a game which was a gripping contest. Scores locked at 3 apiece at quarter time, 5-all at the half, and Saints Girls holding a 7-6 lead at three quarter time. But the Saints scored five to one in the last quarter to come out on top 12-7 at the end, though the Pembroke girls should hold their heads up high for playing so well, and improving so much from last week. It was a great to see an exciting lacrosse match between school teams and the match was played in great spirits too! Goal scorers: Sophie Auricht 6, Emma Auricht 2, Dani Cox, Stephanie Demmrich, Sophie-Louise Shearwood, Willow Stewart-Rattray 1 each.

Under 18 – Saints 3 defeated by Glenelg 29

The team was unfazed by very experienced opponents and despite struggling to match them on the scoreboard, there were again patches of great play. Millisent Wilkin (Year 8) once again ran all day through the midfield and competed strongly in the centre draw, as well as managing to score a goal. Kate Reade (Year 8) was the other goal scorer, with two to her name and an impressive all-round game. Additionally, Emma Auricht (Year 10) had a number of shots that went close as well as causing turnovers in the midfield, creating more opportunities for us in the offensive half. The Glenelg coaches commended the girls on their effort and defensive pressure, which has improved dramatically this term. Alexandra Reade (Year 10), Georgia Nairn (Year 10) and Scarlett Hocking (Year 8) were again strong in this area. Sarah Lowe (Coach)

Under 15 – Saints 12 Vs Sturt 2

The girls showed off good aggression to win Saturday’s game. Sturt delivered a challengeable yet easy game for the girls to work around and bring out skills. Isabelle Norman performing well in the cage stopping majority goals from Sturt. Millisent Wilkin and Stephanie Smalls helped out in the midfield and setting goals out in attack. It was a fast game with the girls running up and down the midfield and using hard defence skills to block Sturt out. The score line was one of our best 12-2 this showing the determination the team had to win. Portia Reppucci (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 13 – Saints 10 defeated SAC Eagles 4

The match started off with Stephanie Smalls (Year 7) in centre; she gained possession of the ball almost every time. Jenna Maione (Year 4) did a terrific job in defence as she stood just in front of her player and won the ball, causing several turnovers. Stephanie Demmrich (Year 7) fought hard for every ground ball and won the toss between her and the opposition player. In the midfield, Dani Cox (Year 4), Portia Maerschel (Year 7) and Willow Stewart-Rattray (Year 5) ran hard, which helped transition the ball quickly into attack. Mabel Cook (Year 3) used her quick reflexes to get the ball that rebounded off the goal and shoot around the goalie. Attackers, Lara Maione (Year 3) and Alannah Godfrey (Year 3), did a great job in getting the ball and throwing it to a girl who was in a better position to shoot. Once again, Isabelle Norman (Year 8) saved several goals and cleared the ball cleanly to her team-mates. Goal scorers were Mabel Cook, Portia Maerschel, Stephanie Smalls and Willow Stewart-Rattray. Best players were Jenna Maione and Isabelle Norman. Lucy Martin (Coach)

Netball

No matches due to Interhouse.

Junior Basketball

Year 6 Blue – Saints 18 defeated by Seymour 25

This week the girls had a fantastic game. In the first quarter the girls worked extremely hard but did not manage to score. Going into the remainder of the game, the team was determined to turn the game around. Their teamwork and execution of skills learnt in this week’s training allowed them to only trail by three points with three minutes left of the game, which was a great achievement. The improvement each of the girls has shown is great and they should be proud of their come-back this week! Lara had an excellent game, scoring some good shots. Well done to all! Amy Wishart and Sophia West (Coaches)

Year 6 White – Saints 26 defeated Pembroke 16

Top scorers were Sivanthi Sivasuthan, Sophie Dansie and Isabelle Gilroy, and special mentions go to Olivia Downie and Maddison Harrex, our two Grade 5 players who have both made excellent progress in their game skills! The girls played with excellent focus throughout the game and strengthened their defence in the 3rd Quarter as the Pembroke team came within two points! In the end, some pressure defence from Isabelle and Primrose Robinson held off the Pembroke players and the girls won the game by 10 points! Great game, ladies! Abby Davey (Coach)

Year 5 Blue – Saints 24 defeated Pembroke Yellow 12

The girls had a great win, keeping to their game plan and looking for open spaces to move in to shoot. The best players and goal scorers were Eleanor Humphrey and Georgie Owler. Eleanor scored many sensational layups and, in defence, used her speed and agility to apply full court pressure to successfully turn the ball over. Annie Bui, Phoebe Black and Charlotte McKee delivered the ball well to Georgie Owler who used her excellent shooting skills to score. The girls controlled the tempo of the game, with Helen Zhang and Alicia Toh helping to keep the pressure on. Samantha McKee (Coach).

Year 5 White – Saints 46 defeated Wilderness Gold 8

St Peter’s White played a fast and hard game, giving nothing away and fighting for every ball. Grace Richards (4 pts), Bridgette Leach (8 pts) and Emily Bryce (4 pts) showed they were able to read the play well and intercepted many passes. Ruby Bruun and Monika Ceplitis both scored the maximum 12 pts, working hard close to the basket. Sophie Dansie (6pts) brought the ball forward many times, providing good scoring opportunities. Keep up the good work. Sharon Tocher-Leach (Coach)

Soccer

Open A – Saints defeated by Pulteney 3

Despite the score, the girls played very well and were unlucky to come away with a loss. Special mention to Talah Gobell for some fantastic saves. Krystina Dianos (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Pulteney 1

Saints started well with some good passages of play but could not play the ball far enough forward to put Pulteney under pressure. Sara Possingham was unlucky to be denied what should have been a clear penalty. Tahlia Towers, Mikaela Georgiadis and Victoria Gilroy were steady in defence, and when the ball got past, Megan Jenssen in goal was often there to gather the ball. Anneliese Thomas and Amelia Wood are also congratulated for the number of tackles and turnovers that they made. Neil Fuller (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 1 drew with Pulteney 1

After going down early in the first half against the run of play, the girls worked hard to get a goal back. After missing a few good chances, we finally scored and continued to press to find the winner. Unfortunately, the game ended in a draw but still plenty of positives to come out of it. By Vincent Talladira (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 9 defeated Wilderness 1

The girls played absolutely amazingly, with some incredible passing to each other. All players defended and attacked as a team, demonstrating a great effort and will to win. The sportsmanship shown was also outstanding, showing respect to the opposition. Well done, team. Taylor Garrett (Coach)

Year 7 – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness 9

The girls came up against a very skilled and strong side in Wilderness. They tried all game but were beaten by a more physical team in the end. Special mention to Asha and Amelia in goals and to Grace who never gave up in defence. Peter Krantis (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 1 defeated by Pulteney 5

The girls put in a great effort for their first game of the term but it was against some strong opposition. We were unlucky with some of the goals we conceded and possibly could’ve have scored a few more. Overall still a good performance as the girls worked hard and never gave up but it shows we have plenty to work on for next week. By Vincent Talladira (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 1 drew with Pulteney 1

The team played well defensively only allowing Pulteney a few shots on goal. The girls kept playing to the end and were unlucky not to win. Chloe Porter scored the goal. By Coach Charlie

Enews – Week 3, Term 3 2016

Issue no. 23
Enews-banner

From the Head of Middle School

RichardLisle_webAs part of a joint AISSA project, Saints Girls have been working with internationally renowned educator, Yong Zhao. The project aims to challenge schools to re-conceptualise their learning programs to help teach and embrace an ‘entrepreneurial mindset’.

As has previously been communicated through the eNews, Professor Zhao has written and spoken widely about the need for schools to allow students to develop real world skills in idea generation, product development and analysis. He is one of a number of leading academics to have pointed out the steady increase in worldwide youth unemployment or underemployment, and how the change in work practices and increased mechanisation and technology will continue to produce challenges for graduating students over the coming decades. He believes passionately that students should have the chance to follow projects in areas in which they have a passion, and learn how to identify real problems and needs that they can find quality solutions for. In short, our students need to think ‘entrepreneurially’.

Our ‘Futures’ program in Years 7 and 8 already allows students to follow a project or projects over which they have large degrees of control, based upon areas of interest and passion. In 2017 we will be redeveloping this program so that concepts of entrepreneurialism will support all the projects that our students undertake. As well as having the opportunity to set up small businesses providing services or supplying products, we will also be urging our girls to consider social entrepreneurial projects. This year the Futures Textiles groups have been a great success, with many students combining new practical skills, with skilful teacher support and provocation, to launch financially (and educationally) profitable start-up companies. We are currently in the process of appointing a team member responsible for work in this area.

Crucial to the success of this new chapter in the life of the Futures Program will be the ability for our students to get feedback on their ideas, business plans and project management skills from experts in the field. Consequently, later in the year we will be formally launching the new program to the community with a view to tapping into the business, marketing, engineering and design expertise that we know is so prevalent in our parent and Old Scholar community.

The project with AISSA and Professor Zhao runs over three years and is called the Rudolph Group, named after the reindeer. Rudolph’s distinguishing feature was his beacon-like nose, which turned out to be rather useful. Our aim is to nurture all our girls’ unique talents and use them to create, as Professor Zhao puts it, ‘high quality solutions for real problems’.

Student Voice: Kennion House Dinner

Kennion House Dinnerb

What a wonderful night it was! Kennion’s Tacky Prom was a dedication to our mothers and grandmothers who attended formals in what we see now as ‘eccentric’ outfits. Featured during the night were puffy sleeves, shoulder pads, sparkles, fake eyelashes, blue eyeshadow, excessive makeup and huge dresses. The Year 11s set up our amazing prom room which consisted of a dance floor, lolly bar, a photograph area and, of course, a punch bowl. Throughout the night all the girls participated in whole House games such as chaotic musical chairs, musical bobs, a fashion parade and ‘guess the Year 12 formal dress’ quiz. Our wonderful supporting parents provided a pasta dinner and chocolate cake for dessert. Full of dancing, laughing and singing, it was a night that I guarantee everyone will remember. On behalf of all the attendees, I would like to thank the many parent supporters (Years 9 – 12) that helped out on the night, the teachers for supporting our House and attending this event in their costumes (especially Miss Jones and Mr Trobbiani for supporting the Years 11 and 12 girls), the wonderful Year 11s who worked so hard to plan and organise the night and all the Kennion girls for contributing to the fantastic night. For my final House dinner, I hope everyone enjoyed the night as much as I did.

A Message from the EDGE (Extended, Differentiated and Gifted Education)

Becca-Burton-HowardGifted education is a subject that often promotes much thought and discussion. As the EDGE coordinator I often get asked what giftedness is, so I thought I would try and tackle that enormous question in as brief a response as possible, by starting with what we think giftedness is not. It is not a person, nor the epithet of what we should all aspire to. It is not a secret club and it is not ‘better than’. What it is, however, is a group of students who think and question in a similar way but are significantly different from their peers on the continuum of learning. It is more than just an IQ score; it is a set of behaviours which includes creativity, task commitment and high academic ability. It is not only academic, but also artistic and practical beyond what would normally be associated with that age group. It is not a noun; it is an adjective that describes behaviours!

National Abacus Maths Championship

RishitaOn 9 July Year 1 student Rishita Raghav participated in the 3rd National Abacus Maths Championship which was held in Adelaide.  Rishita performed amazingly well for the three papers she was asked to write, achieving an overall score of 85%!

The Japanese abacus is used as a tool to teach students addition, subtraction, multiplication and division sums and therefore making maths easier for them.

We would like to congratulate Rishita on her amazing performance and for representing Saints Girls so well on the national stage!

Music Update: Year 10 Girls Visit Sody Pop Recording Studios

Recording Studio pic 2

Over the past eight weeks the Year 10 Music class has been studying song-writing with Adelaide composer, Robyn Habel. The aim was to help Robyn write a song that reflected the School’s values, vision and ethos. The girls studied lyrics, melody, harmony and arranging, and used their new-found knowledge to attempt their own versions of a school-themed song which then inspired the final version written by Robyn.

Throughout the process the Music class spent time interviewing current and past students, parents and teachers, as well as researching the School’s history to ensure that the song reflected who we are as a school, where we have come from and where we aim to be in the future. To this end, the lyrics cover the journey of our Founding Sisters, the House system and the importance of leadership through service. Last week the girls went to Sody Pop Studios in Norwood and recorded the song. In Assembly in Week 4 we will present the song to the School in a premier live performance.

It’s important to note that this is not a new ‘School Song’. The School Song, written in 1918, has a proud history and is of great importance to all the girls who have graced our classrooms, including our current students. ‘Let’s keep the School flag flying’ unequivocally remains our official anthem.

Rather, the Year 10 class hope that their song will add to our already rich culture at Saints Girls, helping the community to celebrate what is wonderful about our School, cherish our past and continue to build hope for our future.

Class of Cabaret
Class of Cabaretb

In support of our talented vocalist, Sarah Brownridge, I recently had the pleasure of attending Class of Cabaret as part of the 2016 Cabaret Festival. Class of Cabaret showcases some of South Australia’s brightest rising stars from secondary schools across the state and is inspired by personal stories shared through song. We have been fortunate to have now had two of our senior vocalists perform in this exciting initiative. Sarah Brownridge in 2016 and Alexandra De Porteous who successfully auditioned in 2015 and went on to perform her own Cabaret Show “Confessions of a Vocal Instructor” during the 2016 Adelaide Fringe.

Sarah’s performance was outstanding and highlighted not only her singing but also her newly discovered comedic side! Here is what Sarah had to say about her experience:

‘After months of rehearsals, a music bootcamp, amazing master classes with Eddie Perfect, Ali McGregor, Sven Ratzke and Joe Stilgoe, it was time for me to perform at the Space Theatre. The small stage was cluttered with amps, a grand piano, mics, cables and stools. The flickering candles framed the eager faces sitting at the tables in the crowded room. Then the lights went down…. and it was show time.

I talked to the audience about my inexperience with love, and joked about the songs that I had heard on the radio, articles I had read in magazines as well as movie themes and how they provided me with one perspective of love. From here I sang different songs to create a mocking, humorous and exaggerated impression of love as stereotyped in today’s pop culture.

“First you find the one, and he is absolutely drop dead gorgeous….. He’s it! You will spend the rest of your life with him no doubt, because you are so…in…love.”

After this patter, I sang a little of “So In Love” from Kiss Me Kate. I followed this with Jolene – a song which tells of a man who ‘finds another’. I went into the audience and asked a lady her name. This challenged me to do something risky and unpredictable, and really gave me a feel for what many professional Cabaret performers do in their own shows. Her name was Angela, so I sang, ‘Angela, Angela, Angela, I’m begging of you please don’t take my man.’ The audience loved it and clapped along. A great experience! In the story, the man does leave to be with ‘Angela’ and so, heartbroken I sang “Nothing Compares To You.”

To conclude, I performed “You Can’t Hurry Love by the Supremes.”

Cabaret is about honesty and individuality. I aimed to challenge myself by performing something comical, invited audience participation and combined a broad variety of musical styles to extend my vocal ability and challenge my technique. Some of these things I had never considered trying in a performance before. This experience has made me realise that there is something great about performing live. Risk is a factor every performer takes, and there is something quite thrilling about live performance combined with spontaneous audience involvement”.

Figure Skating

Congratulations to Charlotte Farley (Year 4) who recently placed 7th out of 12 in her category as the youngest child with an age range 8-15 years. She improved her personal previous score significantly, competing despite 6 weeks off with a broken arm.

Surfing

Imogen Elliott (Year 6) has been officially selected for the SA State Team to compete in the Junior National Titles for surfing at Philip Island, commencing Monday 28 November.

Swimming

Lucy Young swam at the recent SA Short Course and came 3rd in the open 4 x 100m Freestyle relay and 3rd in the 14U 4 x 50m medley relay. She will be swimming at the Victorian championships 1-5 September.

Junior Netball

Year 4 Blue – Saints 3 defeated by Walford 4

The team were excited and a bit nervous to play their first game. Walford got off to a fast start, scoring 3 goals to our 1 in the first quarter. Our girls tightened up their defence and didn’t allow Walford to score. Through some good attacking play, our girls managed to score 2 goals and evened up the scores at 3-all at three quarter time. The final quarter was a close tussle with lots of great defensive turnovers and scoring opportunities from both teams. Unfortunately for Saints, we weren’t able to capitalise on these chances and Walford managed to score 1 goal in the last to give them the win by 1! Alice Johnswood (Director of Netball)

Year 4 White – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour 21

For some girls it was their very first game of netball and they all did great job, tried hard and had fun. Sue Jones (Acting Coach)

Junior Soccer

Year 4 – Saints 0 defeated by Seymour 2

The start of the game was tight and this continued for the whole first half, with standout efforts in defence by Anna Venning and Alannah Godfrey who supported Elizabeth McKernan in goals. Elizabeth saved several attempts and really enjoyed her time as a goalkeeper. Seymour managed to score a goal minutes before half-time from a deflection off a goal kick. The message at half-time was to spread out and stick to set positions, instead of chasing the ball. Molly Johnson played an amazing game and controlled a lot of the ball; she was our main forward option and Jenna Maione was the best defender. Rebekah-Amelie Sparkes worked hard on her own personal goals from training and committed to a number of contests. Grace Richardson-Stevens saved many shots as our second half goalkeeper and really enjoyed this experience. Seymour scored one goal in the second half and the girls eagerly await next week’s encounter against Wilderness. Mark Routley (Coach)

Years 5 and 6

With both teams scheduled for a bye, it was a good opportunity for coaches to work with their players in an internal match. The match was an opportunity for players to work on their skills and teamwork ahead of facing opposition schools in the next round.

Hockey

Open A – Saints 3 drew with Wilderness 3

Saints played an excellent attacking first half, linking up well together and playing strongly over the ball to lead 2-0 at half-time with goals from Natasha Hammond. In the second half Wilderness came back fighting hard, scoring 3 goals to hit the lead. Saints had many attacking short corners, and attacking opportunities from the strikers in perfect positions in the circle, and Natasha again scored the 3rd goal for Saints, equalising the scores in the last 3 minutes. Dan Searle (Coordinator)

Open C – Saints 2 defeated Pembroke 0

The girls controlled the highly contested game with strong double teaming and numerous linking passes that enabled us to burst up the field. With strong defence from Pembroke, our girls became creative with play, putting all their skills to use in attack. This resulted in one field goal by Poppie Goldsmith and a number of short corners in which Romilly was able to put one away. With a great effort from everyone in the team, we were able to come out on top. Sophie Fry (Coach)

Lacrosse

Under 18 – Saints 5 defeated by Woodville 25

Woodville proved to be a dominant side, but improvements were made in defence with Scarlett Hocking (Year 8) and Alexandra Reade (Year 10) leading the way with their pressure and eagerness to slide. Portia Reppucci (Year 11) scored 3 times after spending the first half in goals, with Millisent Wilkin (Year 8) and Sophie Auricht (Year 10) scoring a goal apiece. With no subs and a one-sided scoreboard, the girls had a fantastic second half, continuing to run hard and work well as a team to lose the half 8 goals to 5, which was a great result. A number of strong shots were well saved by their goalkeeper, which allowed the margin to grow and unfortunately meant a number of quality pieces of play went unrewarded. Sarah Lowe (Coach)

Under 15 – Saints 6 defeated by Woodville 7

Saturday’s game was one of the most aggressive performances yet, with Millisent Wilkin having possession of the ball going for a goal and getting a check to the face. The girls picked up strength from this, with more determination to gain possession of the ball. It was a passionate game to watch, with strong contests from each centre draw keeping the spectators out their seats. Each girl pushed herself until exhaustion. Goal scorers: Harriet Maerschel (1), Portia Maerschel (1), Stephanie Smalls (1), Millisent Wilkin (2), Sophie Auricht (1). Portia Reppucci (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 13 – Saints 11 defeated Glenelg

The match was very close and the girls played very well and attained another win. In defence, many turnovers were caused by Isabel Burmester (Year 5) and Jenna Maione (Year 4), which helped get the ball into attack. Once again Dani Cox (Year 4) used her speed in attack and shot powerfully every time. Stephanie Smalls (Year 7) won several centres and protected the ball well. At half-time the girls were up by one goal, with Isabelle Norman (Year 8) again having an outstanding game in goals as she came out of the goal circle to get the ball and pass to players. Finally, Willow Stewart-Rattray (Year 5), Portia Maerschel (Year 7) and Saskia Jonats (Year 7) all did a fantastic job in dodging around their players to get a shot off. Goal scorers were Dani Cox, Saskia Jonats, Portia Maerschel, Stephanie Smalls and Willow Stewart-Rattray. Lucy Martin (Coach)

Netball

Open A – Saints 44 defeated by Seymour 64

Unfortunately, this was a disappointing result with a slow start that made it difficult to get turnovers back. There was strong and consistent work from Lydia Smalls, Grace Dawson and Olivia Habel who worked well together in defence. We have our heads up and are training hard in preparation for Knockout next Monday. Josephine Dal Pra and Madison Bateman (Co-Captains)

Open B – Saints 29 defeated by Seymour 64

The girls started the game strongly and with enthusiasm and this reflected in the score of the first quarter. Unfortunately, Seymour came back and managed to get a decent lead in the second quarter. The girls maintained determination and were much more cohesive in the last quarter. Jessie Rundle did a brilliant job in goals and Sarah Richards was strong in defence. Alexandra Murray (Open B Captain)

Open C – Saints 23 defeated by Seymour 72

Our team played a courageous match against Seymour. Unfortunately, the opposition came out with a very strong side but, given the circumstances, I am a proud coach. The game was a big improvement technically on the first game of the term and Saints Open Cs should be proud of that. Our girls maintained great sportsmanship despite some frustrating calls by the umpires; a challenging game from all angles this week but the Open Cs handled it well. Grace Russo (Coach)

Year 10 – Saints 43 defeated Walford 1

On Saturday the Year 10C netball team played against Walford. The girls played an excellent game and kept Walford scoreless until the last 30 seconds of the game. It was a great team effort and the girls utilised the opportunity to further develop their skills on court. Alana Coppock (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 51 defeated Seymour 38

The girls played another fantastic game of netball this week, recording another great win. A convincing start in the first quarter put the girls into a 10 goal margin, which in the end led the girls to victory over Seymour. The girls played consistent netball in all four quarters, displaying tight defence throughout the court and fantastic feeding into the goalies who shot accurately. Overall, it was a spectacular game of competitive netball to watch and we look forward to continuing our success. Sivi Sivasuthan (Year 9)

Year 9B – Saints 33 defeated by Seymour 47

On Saturday the girls played a hard match against Seymour and, despite the loss, the team fought hard. We managed to have a pretty equal game across all quarters, even winning the first one. However, it was the second quarter that really pushed us and we unfortunately fell behind. In the last quarter everyone worked really hard and wanted that win. Sophie LeMire (Year 9)

Year 9C1 – Saints had a bye

Year 9C2 – Saints 8 defeated by Pembroke 33

The girls played very well as a team this week, despite going down. They improved with strong passes and tight defence, creating multiple turnovers. The girls had high levels of motivation, helping to keep everyone’s heads up for the 4 quarters. The defenders all deserve a special mention for working hard for the entire game and a special mention goes to Aditi Tamhankar and Anneliese Thomas for playing in positions they don’t usually play in. The girls should be proud of their efforts, as they are getting stronger each week. Chelsea Stamato (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 30 defeated by Seymour 33

After our disappointing loss last week, our aim was to move towards the ball, increase communication on court and, overall, play four consistent quarters of netball. We worked on these specific areas at training, and I was happy to see the girls implement them into their game. Special mention must go to Sarah Wishart and Hannah Freeman this week for their consistently strong defence work, gaining a combined eight intercepts out of the team’s total of thirteen. Movement in our attack end was much better this week; however, we simply missed too many scoring opportunities when it counted. Vanessa Brooks (Coach).

Year 8B – Saints 33 defeated Seymour 26

The girls played another strong game this week, with our shooters making the most of our scoring opportunities. Moving into defence, the girls did well on a tough attacking opposition and were able to maintain our lead throughout the game. Our leading and hitting targets will be the focus this week, to ensure we make the most of every possession. Best players to Zara Stefani for playing a strong game in both attack and defence, and Charlotte Sellars for her ability to completely block the goal shooter out for the entirety of the game. Emily Wishart (Coach).

Year 8C – Saints 6 defeated by Seymour 24

The girls started off with a strong first quarter, leading in front and using strong passing. However, Seymour came back strongly and our girls’ determination to try their best, making sure to execute set plays learnt at training, was positive. Despite the loss, all of the girls were persistent, which they should be proud of. Best players go to Paris Greene and Ellen Zhang for moving in front and always being an option for the girls. Amy Wishart and Sophia West (Coaches)

Year 7A – Saints 42 defeated Seymour 7

The team had a fantastic win against Seymour on the weekend! Strong teamwork from all the girls for the first three quarters meant that we were able to rest our hard-working goalies, Amelia Pudney and Ella Waltham, and mix things up in the last quarter. Thanks to Olivia Kelly and Stephanie Smalls for stepping into the circle and even managing to score 8 goals between them in the last quarter. Great game played by the whole team! Michelle Blackburn (Coach)

Year 7B – Saints 3 defeated by Seymour 5

This was a game where both defences played exceptionally well. It was a low scoring affair, highlighted by a scoreless 3rd term to both teams. Unfortunately, Seymour’s first quarter set them up for the win, outscoring us 3-0. Best player: Keely Flannagan. Roger Mills (Coach)

 Junior Basketball

Year 6 Blue – Saints 18 defeated by Seymour 22

The girls played a great game and put in a lot of effort, working hard to ensure their passing was strong and dribbling was accurate to see a tight scoreline. They used the skills they learned in training to get around their opponents, with best players being Mia Dodd who played a great game, scoring majority of the goals, and Lara Slape for improving each quarter and managing to get most rebounds. Congratulations to all the girls on such a close game and they should be proud of how far they have come since last week. Amy Wishart and Sophia West (Coaches)

Soccer

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Immanuel 4

In wet and wild conditions, the girls came up against a very strong Immanuel side. Our team was a young team, due to some injuries in the team. The girls never kept trying. Special mention to Eleanor Anderson and Siena Kulinski who both played really well. Let’s finish the season off strongly, girls! Peter Krantis (Director of Soccer)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by St Michaels 1

Well done to everyone for an excellent game. Despite the weather, all girls played with much better intensity than last week. There was some great work in defence, keeping the opposition under pressure and limiting their scoring opportunities. We were unlucky to concede in the last few minutes of the game. A big thank you must go to Millisent Wilkin, Olufunto Komolafe, Sophie Barr and Rachel Banham for filling in and putting in a great effort. Well done to Molly Ellis and Emma Mockridge who both did an excellent job playing goalie for the first time. Christine Gayen (Coach)

Middle A – Saints had a bye

Middle B – Saints 0 defeated by Seymour 6

With the weather being on the rough side (wind and rain), and some girls being unwell, and others having to play in different positions, this was a tough game. We did create many scoring chances but could just not finish them. Although we lost, I was still proud of the efforts the girls displayed in the conditions and showed very good sportsmanship congratulating Seymour on their win. By Taylor Garrett (coach)

Year 7 – Saints had a bye

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

Preparing for 2017, preparing for the future.
MeredithBeck_web

Last Thursday afternoon, current Year 9, 10 and 11 students and parents spent some time discussing subjects and pathways with teachers and students at the 2017 Curriculum Expo. This second year of the Expo was a great success. The main event was held in the Arts Centre, and families were able to have an introduction to the Senior School, attend information sessions on SACE and the IB Diploma, as well as speak with local universities about entrance requirements.

At Year 10, students choose three elective subjects out of a possible 16. Year 11 SACE students choose six subjects from a suite of over 30 (including IB subjects). The choices are impressive.

During the Expo we gave students a plethora of advice regarding subjects and making the right choices for them. This included understanding oneself as a learner, following one’s passion and abilities, keeping options open, following recommendations and considering assessment styles. Furthermore, there is available for them an extensive SACE and IB comparison chart to facilitate decision-making between these pathways. Teachers, parents and friends are all able to support the girls in their choices, nevertheless the one area that maybe problematic is preparing for possible futures. How does one plan for a future when we hear reports that 60% of the best jobs in the next ten years haven’t been invented? What is it that we need to nurture in our students to prepare them for their possible futures?

Recently I read a report that the two most important subjects for students to study are Mathematics and Ethics. This statement is provocative for teachers who are zealous about their areas of expertise! We teachers love our subjects and understand the benefits of studying them. However Mathematics was nominated for the high-level analytical and computational thinking required for the future developments in technology. Meanwhile Ethics provides insight and ethical and moral guidance on the impact of emerging technologies on social and emotional wellbeing, responsibility and awareness, and environmental sustainability. Certainly the supporters of the recent phenomena Pokémon Go commend that the players are out and about and socially engaged rather than inactive. I wonder about this definition of social engagement and moreover if the ethics of social responsibility was factored into the development of the game. Ethics in politics, religion, distribution of wealth, human rights, sport – I couldn’t agree more as to the significance of Ethics in our progress as a compassionate, just and equitable society.

What is incontestable in preparing for possible futures is that technology is ubiquitous. Our girls have never known the world without it and one of the challenges is to find themselves within and without it. (Ask your daughter what would she be lost without? Is it a person or a device?)

Search the internet and there is interesting advice on careers of the future. Two that aroused my interest are:

  • Urban Shepherd: A combination of resilient micro-farmer and guide to the nature-filled side of the city. These plant care specialists focus on small-scale gardens and plots that exist in unusual urban areas.
  • Digital Detox Therapist: A counsellor who specialises in separating technology-stressed individuals from their devices.

However to return to the educational domain, the seven general capabilities of the Australian Curriculum affirm that education is much more than content. It is the skills, behaviours and dispositions that will assist students to live and work successfully in the 21st century. Three that I want to emphasise are:

  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Ethical understanding
  • Intercultural understanding

These are not subjects but dispositions and approaches to learning, approaches to life.

I understand the challenge that many girls face in achieving a high ATAR and selecting subjects that may realise this goal. However I also encourage students to go with their passion and to have a sense of courageous exploration. If our choices are not enjoyable and purposeful then a significant part of our schooling and possible futures may not be fulfilling. Furthermore, perhaps we should consider not just the content matter of subjects themselves (exceptions being university prerequisites and assumed knowledge!) but the deep thinking, problem solving, knowledge application, engagement and opportunities for growth that the subjects provide. We cannot predict future careers but we can be comfortably sure that the jobs of the future will be different, multiple and ever evolving.

Perhaps the final word on pathways and subjects should go to Anna Mullin, our 2015 Dux of the School. Having undertaken the IB Diploma, she spoke not about specific subjects but on learning itself:

“One of my favourite aspects of IB was that it’s mindful about learning…. it encourages you not only to learn, but to think about learning and knowledge and recognise its significance and the potential issues associated with it.”

Saints Olympiad

Saints Olympiad 8–12 August

Every four years, people across the globe flock to their TV screens to watch the magic and excitement of the Olympic Games. In 2016 the Games of the XXXI Olympiad will take place in the city of Rio de Janeiro – the first time the Modern Olympics will be hosted by a South American nation. While the party in Rio on opening ceremony night is set to be spectacular, we will all be waiting and watching to see our home-grown heroes compete for a prestigious Olympic medal. This year’s Olympics sees St Peter’s Girls Old Scholar, Olympia Aldersey, rowing in the Women’s Eight.

To celebrate the Olympics, Saints is offering our very own Saints Olympiad with at least two activities available for the girls to try out each lunch-time during Olympic week (Week 3). The following is a timetable of these activities:

Monday 8 August:

  • Table Tennis– A chance to pick up a paddle and have a hit in the gym
  • Archery – Head up to the oval to try your hand at archery with two targets and plenty of bows and arrows.

Tuesday 9 August:

  • Soccer – Nominate your team of five friends and the country name you wish to play under before the end of Monday and take on all the other teams
  • Hockey – All are welcome to try out their skills in hockey on the synthetic pitch.

Wednesday 10 August:

  • Cycling and Rowing – Challenge yourself to see how far you can travel on a spin bike or rowing machine in three minutes inside the EFM gym
  • Volleyball – Enjoy Volleyball on the mini courts set up in the gym.

Thursday 11 August:

  • Badminton – Head down to the gym and enjoy badminton with your friends on the courts
  • Basketball – Have some fun with shooting challenges on the top court outside the gym.

Friday 12 August:

  • Handball – Middle School students are encouraged to sign up for their House handball team and play off to determine the winning house
  • Tennis – Find out how well you can hit with a chance to play against the ball machine on the bottom tennis courts outside the ELC.

On Friday 12 August, for a gold coin donation, students in the Middle and Senior Schools will be able to wear sportswear or national dress to school to celebrate the Olympics. The money raised from the casual day will be split equally between each of the four House charities. On the same day the ELC and Junior School will be working together to plant national flags along the pathway to Chapel to celebrate the achievements of all nations associated with the Olympic movement.

This fantastic week will culminate in the Middle and Senior School girls competing for House Shields in Badminton, Hockey, Netball and Soccer at the annual Winter Interhouse on the morning of Saturday 13 August.

Team athena Houston

Student Voice: Team ATHENA’s successful trip to Houston

At the end of Term 2, ATHENA embarked on what was unequivocally our most exciting journey to date: a 10-day trip to Texas, USA, to attend the 2016 MATE Remotely Operated Vehicle International Competition.

We spent the first few days of our time away in downtown Houston where we attempted to get over our jet lag, adjust to the local weather of 35+ degrees and locate our missing luggage. We had a great time visiting the Houston Museum of Natural Science, attending a night-time, fan-charged baseball game (go Astros!), shopping at Texas’ largest mall and eating the most amazing Tex Mex food. We even managed to fit some much needed exercise into our busy schedule as the lift was out in our hotel and the rooftop pool was on the 23rd floor!

On day three we piled into a minivan and headed down to Webster, home of NASA’s Johnson Space Centre, where we were showcasing the SUBS in Schools program at the MATE Competition. Held in NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab (the largest swimming pool in the world which houses a full scale model of the International Space Station where astronauts train for future space ventures), there were over 1000 competitors from 16 countries, making for a few very busy and exciting days. However, not all our time was taken up with presenting and we had a great time being tourists and exploring the Johnson Space Centre.

We were also incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with past and current astronauts, Andy Thomas and Shannon Walker, about their time in space and how they got to be where they are today. Organised by Nova Systems, this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Overall, it was an incredible trip and this is evident both in the smiles on our faces and the inspiring new friends we made during our time in the States. ATHENA would like to thank Saints Girls and our sponsors, W&G/AZTEC, Saab Australia, ASC, DCNS, Nova Systems, Dedicated Systems, and, last but not least, Belinda Dawson and Meg Keough for supporting us on our adventure.

Music Update

State Music Camp

Congratulations to Rachel Banham (violin 1) and Clair Kao (flute) who recently attended a week-long music camp along with many of the best young musicians in the state.

Both students performed in the Alexander Orchestra conducted by ASO musician, Michael Milton. As lead flautist, Clair did an outstanding job of leading the flutes through difficult and demanding passages.

Congratulations also to Cheri Wong who successfully auditioned for the top orchestra, the Bishop Orchestra, conducted by Mark Shiell. This orchestra performed extraordinarily difficult works including Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’, Verdi’s Prelude to ‘La Traviata’ and the demonically difficult ‘March Slav’ by Tchaikovsky. All pieces were testament to the long hours of practice, dedication and commitment of our instrumentalists to achieve and perform at this elite level.

Adelaide Music Eisteddfod

Year 7 student Cheri Wong recently competed in the highly contested strings section of the Adelaide Music Eisteddfod and achieved the following results;

  • 1st in the 12 years and under Violin Solo division
  • 1st in the 14 years and under Violin Solo division
  • 2nd in the 16 years and under Elder Conservatorium Junior String Concerto
  • 3rd in the Grade 7 and 8 division

Cheri also received honours for her 8th grade AMEB exam and is now working toward her A.Mus.A qualifications. We congratulate Cheri on these truly outstanding results.

Vacation Care: July 2016

During the July school break, OSHC remained busy with a very full Vacation Care Program.

Vacation Care July 2016A large number of the girls brought along friends, brothers and cousins from other schools to join in their fun.

Paper Mache, Superheros, Dinosaurs & Dragons and Tie Dye were just a few of the themed days we had over the three-week break.

Our excursions were very popular, with two of them being completely booked well in advance.

The children enjoyed catching up with Manny and his friends in Ice Age 5 at the cinema, played until they were completely exhausted at Imagination Kids Play Café and came back to OSHC with a little added paint and glitter from the Plaster Fun House.

We introduced the children to the Christmas in July festivities, making our own stockings and bonbons filled with lollies and toys.

Food played a big part in the chilly break. On Dinosaurs and Dragons Day we cooked up a pre-historic feast, hot dog pirate ships on Pirates & Princesses Day and plenty of lunch box treats on Back to School Day.

The weather was not kind to us most days but we made the most of it. With no power one day when it got a bit cold we built a giant cubby house with tables, pillows and blankets that spread across half the room, squeezing everyone in to keep warm. A few of the children were so cosy they even fell asleep!

No matter which days the children attended, they all came along prepared for fun, food and a bit of relaxation too.

Staff, had a great time each day engaging with the wonderful girls and boys that make St Peter’s Girls OSHC the amazing place it is.

Year 11 Camp

The Year 11 girls spent the last two days of Term 2 at Glenhaven Park campsite, Stockport.

The aim of the camp was to develop the girls’ leadership skills by participating in activities to identify and develop their strengths, face their fears by completing the high ropes course and giant swing, and bond with their House group.

The management of the campsite provided the girls with comfortable cabins and some amazing food, plus plenty of support during their activities.

Hockey

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Scotch 8

Without our captain, Natasha Hammond, and playing against Scotch with a high-class striker, the team faced a tough challenge. The girls performed well across the pitch, with Grace Packer, Rachael Disney and Lara Khoury running onto a number of balls from the midfield but we could not get through the last line. After a slow start with not enough voice on the pitch, the girls rallied and looked to move the ball to space, with Olivia Goldsmith and Carla Lawrence working exceptionally hard. Olivia Teh rebounded well on the left also. It will be important to see some learning from last weekend carry into this week’s game. Dan Searle (Coordinator)

Open C – Saints 13 defeated Loreto 0

The team went out strongly right from the start, linking together many strong passes through the midfield to the strikers. Well done to the goal scorers, Aroha Munroe, Romilly Dennis (UK exchange student), Kate McKellar-Stewart, Poppie Goldsmith and Holly Cardone. It’s been great to see such improvement from the girls over the season, evident in the great team results! Sophie Fry (Coach)

Lacrosse

Under 18 – Saints 4 defeated by Sturt 19

Once again the girls faced a much more experienced opposition and struggled to match them in the first quarter. To their credit, though, they displayed a great deal of intent and fight to be much more competitive across the next three quarters. Portia Reppucci (Year 11), who started the game in goals, scored twice in the second half and was prevalent through midfield, having a great all-round game. Other goal scorers were Millisent Wilkin (Year 8) and Harriet Maerschel (Year 8) who were also valuable with their efforts through the midfield. This week our defence adapted their playing style admirably and showed great improvement in this area, with Antonia Kirsten-Parsch (Year 11), Scarlett Hocking (Year 8), and Abigail Lisle (Year 8) leading the way. Adelle Craig (Coach)

Under 15 – Saints 11 defeated Wilderness 6

It took the girls until 2nd quarter to warm up into the game. Once the girls had scored a number of goals, our confidence receiving an instant lift. Chelsea Walls scored 4 goals, along with Harriet Maerschel shooting a solid 6 goals, and Fiona Lethbridge setting up the first goal of the game in the first half. Isabelle Norman saving low tricky shots helped us out in defence. The girls didn’t lose enthusiasm throughout the game and were first in at centre draws. Well-deserved win by all players!

Portia Reppucci (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 13 – Saints 13 defeated Pembroke 5

Stephanie Smalls (Year 7) did a terrific job in centre as she managed to get the ball and pass swiftly to an attacker. In attack, Mabel Cook (Year 3) scored some fantastic goals as she continued to run around the goal to improve her angle to get a shot off. Dani Cox (Year 4) also played well in attack as she used her speed to run to the goal and score three powerful goals before she used up her four second time limit. At half-time the girls were up by one goal and needed to focus on getting in front of their players to get the ball. Saskia Jonats (Year 7) and Portia Maerschel (Year 7) continuously ran hard through the mid-field and caught the ball cleanly, which helped transition it quickly into attack. Isabelle Norman (Year 8) showed great confidence in goals and once again saved a number of goals, and that helped us win the match. Goal scorers for the match were Mabel Cook, Dani Cox, Portia Maerschel and Stephanie Smalls. Best players were Portia Maerschel and Saskia Jonats. Lucy Martin (Coach)

Netball

Open A – Saints 53 defeated Pembroke 41

In the first game of the term, Saints put up a great fight against the Pembroke team. After having lost to Pembroke in a trial match last term, the team was prepared and aware of the physicality of the Pembroke team and therefore started the game very strongly. Our initial effort and consistent pressure on the court enabled us to secure the win. A great effort from all girls, and special mention to Fiona Dawson for her consistent efforts and accurate shooting in the ring. We are training hard and looking forward to a home game this weekend, and the knockout round in the coming weeks. Josephine Dal Pra and Madison Bateman (Co-Captains)

Open B – Saints 32 defeated by Pembroke 34

It was consistently a tight game where we were often one or two up but unfortunately in the last two minutes Pembroke got a couple of goals that we couldn’t match. However, everyone played excellently so it feels like we won anyway. Jessie Rundle and Chelsea Marchetti were outstanding in goals. Chelsea Jones played well, Ebony-Jade Nash-Smith fitted well in her first game and Georgia Bateman brought the ball swiftly down the midcourt. Lydia Smalls, Charlotte Parker and Sarah Richards were constantly turning the ball over in the defence end of the court. A commendable effort by all girls! Alexandra Murray (Open B Captain)

Open C – Saints 21 defeated by Pembroke 36

A great first game back for the Open C team, the girls played really well as a team and were vocal on court. Pembroke presented a competitive team, with scores remaining very close until the last quarter when Pembroke pulled away. As coach, it was great to have the whole team respond positively to coaching points throughout the whole game. Well done, girls! Grace Russo (Coach)

Year 10 – Saints 20 defeated by Westminster 30

It was a slow start for the girls, allowing Westminster to lead in the first quarter. However, the girls took on board advice given at quarter time and outscored Westminster in the second quarter to be only 3 goals behind at half-time. Unfortunately, Westminster were too good in the end, but Saints put in an incredibly good effort by all. Alana Coppock (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 48 defeated Pembroke 19

The holidays proved to be no excuse for a rusty game, with the 9As defeating Pembroke comfortably! Defensive pressure was applied all over the court and goalies shot accurately so Saints took a strong lead in the first quarter and never looked back. With an excellent game from both the attacking and defending side, the girls secured their second win over Pembroke this season. Charlotte White (Year 9)

Year 9B – Saints 26 defeated by Pembroke 43

Year 9C1 – Saints 29 defeated Scotch 16

Another fantastic win and great start to Term 3 by the girls this week. The girls began the game a bit shakily after the three-week break but ended the game with some very positive play and upheld the team’s undefeated streak. Congratulations to all the girls on a great win and we look forward to the games to come! Ellana Welsby (Coach)

Year 9C2 – Saints 10 defeated by Pembroke 53

The girls played well as a team and there were many positives that came out of the game. Over the next few weeks the girls have a range of things that we will need to work on. The girls still had high levels of energy and motivation during the game, no matter what the score was. The girls started with a strong first quarter, with defence working hard to maintain the ball. A special mention to all the defenders for their hard work across all four quarters. The girls should be proud of their efforts. Even though they did not play their best game, they still continued to fight until the end of the game. Chelsea Stamato (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 27 defeated by Pembroke 29

An unfortunate loss this week after a very strong first half and a convincing lead at half-time. The girls played consistent netball in the first two quarters, displaying tight defence throughout the court and fantastic feeding into the goalies. Ruby Bouhamdan and Matilda McCormack both played equally well, getting the most intercepts in that first half. Pembroke came out strongly in the second half, both defensively and in their attack, and we did not adapt and respond the way we needed to, leaving us with a two goal loss. Thank you to Lucy White who came up and filled in for us once again. We will be working on playing four consistent quarters of netball in the remaining matches. Vanessa Brooks (Coach).

Year 8B – Saints 26 defeated Pembroke 7

The defenders held the opposition to only a handful of goals, and brought the ball down to our shooting end with ease. Attackers worked hard to make every centre pass end in a goal, due to great shooting by Olufunto Komolafe, Charlotte, Lucy White and Clair Kao. This week we will work on our ‘holding’ and finding the right position to set up on a defender, which will help with our efficiency. Best players to Zara Stefani for her persistence and great game on a tough defender, and Lauren Porter and Paris Robinson for their exceptional defensive work. Emily Wishart (coach).

Year 8C – Saints had a bye

Year 7A – Saints 28 defeated Pembroke 16

The girls played a great game with relentless defence and a consistent steady attack, resulting in a fantastic team win! Thanks to Alice Johnswood for stepping in and coaching the team. Michelle Blackburn (Coach)

Year 7B – Saints 9 defeated Immanuel 8

A low scoring game where both team’s defences played exceptionally well. Fortunately, our first quarter set the girls up to hold on for a win. Best players: Harriett Gilroy, Keely Flannagan and Sara Peak. Roger Mills (Coach)

Junior Basketball

Year 6 Blue – Saints 18 defeated by Wilderness Green 46

Despite the score, the girls put in a lot of effort and worked hard to ensure their passing was strong and dribbling was accurate. With this being many of the girls’ first game, they did an amazing job and the score does not reflect their persistence and determination on court. Adele Russell played a great game, improving noticeably each quarter and managing to contest the opposition many times. Congratulations to all the girls on a good start to the season. It was great to see the huge amount of potential in the team, and I am looking forward to seeing the girls improve as the season continues. Amy Wishart (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 26 defeated by Seymour 41

In our first game Isabelle Gilroy, Sivanthi Sivasuthan and Sophie Norman all played solid games, with Sivanthi scoring three lay-ups in a row after some excellent rebounds in defence from Sophie Normas, Primrose Robinson and Isabelle Gilroy! Honourable mentions go to the Grade 5s on the team, Maddie Harrex and Olivia Downie, who played commendable offensive games! Abby Davey (coach)

Year 5 Blue – Saints 30 defeated Wilderness 24

A great win to start the season. Eleanor Humphrey (Captain), the best player of the match, shot the maximum number of points allowed by half-time and continued to be an excellent playmaker in the second half. Georgie Owler, in the best player list, also shot the maximum number of points. Helen Zhang, who was also one of the top players, continued to bring the ball down well and displayed great tactics. Charlotte McKee was good in defence and tenaciously shot a goal in the last minute of play. Annie Bui, Phoebe Black and Alicia Toh positioned well and demonstrated great teamwork. Samantha McKee (Coach).

Year 5 White – Saints 28 defeated Seymour 22

What a great start to the season by the White team. They played a fierce and fast-paced game, with Sophie Dansie (6 pts) and Emily Bryce (8 pts) working hard to make space to receive the ball and head for the basket. Willow Stewart-Rattray (6 pts) chased hard to prevent Seymour scoring on fast breaks and worked hard rebounding in attack. Grace Richards had great vision and, with long passing, allowed us to score. Monica Ceplitis (2 pts) played a strong game, taking the ball out of tight spots and driving hard into the key to shoot. Noa Goddard showed she is strong at defending and applying pressure to her opponents. Her hard work resulted in Seymour making errors and turning the ball over to Saints. Bridgette Leach (6 pts) provided great defence, making her opponents work hard for every possession, and was accurate in attack. Well done, girls – a good team game. Sharon Tocher-Leach (Coach)

Soccer

Open A – Saints 1 defeated by Pembroke 4

The Open A soccer team had a disappointing loss to Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon. Despite a strong start, being 1-0 up in the first five minutes, Pembroke unfortunately managed to score some easy goals and the girls couldn’t manage to get the ball back up in attack. Special mention to the defence who played well and to Dominique Rigby for a great goal. Krystina Dianos (Soccer Captain)

Open B – Saints

Middle A – Saints 0 drew with Pembroke 0

Middle B – Saints 0 defeated by Wilderness 1

In a close contest Wilderness scored a lucky goal to decide the game. Saints impressed with their passing and support of each other, with many shots at goal created. It was good to see players moving into a position to receive the ball and the good sportsmanship shown was amazing. Although we lost, the girls came off with big smiles on their faces and I am proud of their effort. Taylor Garrett (Coach)

Year 7 – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour 5

The team got off to a slow start against a very aggressive Seymour team, and were down 3 nil at half-time. In the second half the girls showed more intensity, with Sophie Kameniar having a good game by working hard in the midfield and scoring the goal. Victoria Thorp and Amelia Provan were both excellent in goals. Hopefully, next game we can be more aggressive from the start. Peter Krantis (Coach)
