From Our Principal

juliashea_web-200x300-200x300The theory of left-brain or right-brain dominance states each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. People who identify as left-brain thinkers might feel that they have strong maths and logic skills. Right-brain thinkers feel that their talents are more on the creative side of things. A person who is ‘left-brained’ is often said to be more logical, analytical and objective. A person who is ‘right-brained’ is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful and subjective. I definitely fall into the left-brain category. Anyone who’s seen me in the Staff Dance on Celebration Day would know that my ‘creative side’ is buried deep within! Of course, we now understand that the brain is not nearly as dichotomous as once thought. Research has shown that ability in subjects such as Maths is strongest when both halves of the brain work together. Perhaps all those piano lessons that I persevered with in my youth helped garner the creative attributes needed to tackle the more challenging mathematical questions with which I was faced as I progressed through university.

In some schools, the Creative Arts have been relegated to the realm of co-curricular activities. Here though at Saints Girls, we believe the Creative Arts have a vital role to play in the education of our girls and hence they remain a cornerstone of our academic program. Whether it be through Music, Drama, Visual Art or Dance, the benefits of an Arts education are abundant. Confidence, creative thinking, improvisation, collaboration (through which you learn compromise), vision, imagination, open-mindedness – the list goes on. An education in The Arts is based on the belief that although we are teaching artistic conventions and theories, we are also teaching the freedom to create, experiment and eradicate the boundaries of possibility. The Arts are about looking beyond the self. Listening, feeling, sensing and moving, but most importantly, reacting (and this year in particular, responding to a world that has changed significantly).

That’s why this term at Saints Girls has been amazing. Unlike our peers in the eastern states, we’ve been privileged to welcome audiences back into our Arts Centre to see performances of the highest calibre. Charm, Kaleidoscope, the SACE Music Concert, the Year 9 Arts Night, the Year 2/3/4 Music Concert, and of course, the incredible Matilda The Musical JR. – all productions that have been given much classroom time. Because even beyond the transferable skills that it develops, our Creative Arts program ensures that every girl absorbs on a regular basis the aestheticism so key to the joy of being human, as well as the immeasurable qualities of playing or just appreciating that art form, in all its subtle beauty. That’s why The Arts matter and that’s why they must be part of our academic offerings all the way through to Year 12 and not only a co-curricular activity.

Have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to welcoming the girls back for Term 4 in full summer uniform on Monday 12 October.

Athletics Champions Five Years Running

W10 - IGSSA 2

Saints Girls entered the IGSSA Athletics Carnival in high spirits on Wednesday with the aim of retaining the overall shield for a phenomenal fifth year in a row.

Many of the girls achieved personal bests with Malaika McLeod breaking the U13 800m record, taking 3 seconds off the previous best set by Old Scholar Sophie Linn, and Millie Wilkin enjoying a memorable final athletics carnival qualifying for the Di Burge 100m champion race and then finishing runner up by just 0.01 of a second.

In a carnival where every point counts, we trailed Immanuel throughout the day, and with events running out, Saints bound together at the relays, going on to claim the U13 and Open pennants as well as the overall shield by a single point.

Final Points (Top 5)
1st – Saints Girls (1919)
2nd – Immanuel (1918)
3rd – Pembroke (1767)
4th – Walford (1668)
5th – Wilderness (1630)

Steep Learning Curve at Year 9 Camp

W10 - Year 9 Camp

Year 9 Camp was an amazing journey that pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to overcome challenges with my class. Climbing the high ropes at Woodhouse was a new experience for me which was so fun and gave me an excellent opportunity to take new risks. Hiking up a steep hill with a heavy backpack was very challenging, but after a great effort and enthusiasm from the girls around me, I made it to the top with my peers and we felt a proud sense of achievement which was a very rewarding experience.

Madison Liddy
Year 9 student

Year 9 Camp certainly epitomised the name ‘challenge camp’, yet we all maintained positive mindsets and embraced the many opportunities presented to us. We participated in fun activities over the course of the week. I know I am one of many who came away with a sense of accomplishment as I overcame my fears and achieved my goals. Whilst we all challenged ourselves physically with high ropes, rock climbing, abseiling and bushwalking, my Home Group members often challenged each other mentally with riddles during the bush walks. The most memorable moment would have to be our time spent at the stunning waterfall in Deep Creek, where we were blessed with perfect weather. From all of the beautiful scenery to strengthening friendships within my Home Group, I could not have asked for a better camp.

Celebrating Our Grandparents and Extended Families

W10 - ELC

Grandparents and extended families play a vital role in the lives of our children at the ELC. Every day, we welcome extended family members at drop-off and pick-up time. We recognise that your role in the children’s lives is pivotal. Many of you have been able to come in to ELC, or you may live interstate or overseas.

We have created this video for you to acknowledge how much we appreciate and value the relationships that we have and thank you for being such an important part of our lives.

Budding Poets Blossom at Recital

W10 - Poetry

As part of our ongoing participation in the IPSHA (Independent Primary Schools Heads of Australia) Poetry Competition, three Junior School students from Years 4, 5 and 6 attended the annual recital last week. They each presented a set poem and a student-choice poem.

This competition is designed to encourage students to enjoy reading and appreciate poetry, develop memorisation skills and sound elocution, and gain confidence in performing before an audience.

Preliminary finals were conducted in individual schools and one student from each year level was chosen to represent their school in the competition which was held at Loreto College. All three St Peter’s Girls’ School competitors presented their poems in an outstanding manner with excellent vocalisation and expression. Isabella Blake was awarded 1st place in the Year 5 section for her recitation of ‘We Celebrate’ by Christopher Cheng and her chosen poem of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ by Roald Dahl. This event continues to foster a love of reading, writing and performing poetry, and all entrants were congratulated on their incredible efforts.

Pictured are Stella Fuidge (Year 4), Isabella Blake (Year 5) and Eliza Brill Reed (Year 6).

Adventures Galore at Year 10 Camp

W10 - Year 10 Camp

Over the five day Year 10 camp, girls were challenged through abseiling, rock climbing, mountain bike riding and bush walking. The bus ride to the Argadells property, just north of Quorn, took about five hours and contained a lot of singing and sleeping. Abseiling was thrilling for most of the girls, especially the initial lean over the 30m high rock ledge. Like abseiling, rock climbing was also a height challenge and although most girls succeeded, they found it hard to find the right crevasses to put both their hands and feet in. Mountain bike riding was a great chance for many girls to build speed down some hills. Mount Arden was a challenge for most girls as it was quite long and unbelievably steep! The talent show on the last night featured a rap song by Kilburn, a camp parody of Beyoncé’s ‘Halo’ by Patteson, an a cappella and dance performance by Selwyn, and a comedic re-enactment of camp by Kennion. The girls really bonded with their Home Groups and were able to overcome many challenges faced.

Winning Words at Staff vs Student Debate

W10 - Staff v Student Debating 4

Last Friday was the annual Staff vs Student Debate, a friendly competition between staff and the girls. This year’s topic was that ‘TikTok should be banned at St Peter’s Girls’, with the students debating the affirmative side and the staff arguing for the negative. The irony between the two sides made for a humorous debate, bringing forth arguments on how TikTok can be used as an education tool and is a platform teaching us popular dances allowing us to ‘go viral’. There were outstanding performances from every participant and following a crowd cheer vote, the students maintained their winning streak.

Foundation Long Lunch Success

W10 - Long Lunch 2

Our 2020 Foundation Long Lunch on Sunday was a stunning community success. We were very fortunate to offer such wonderful weather, food, refreshments and entertainment for our 200 guests, sponsors, volunteers and staff.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to those who donated their time, services, money and products for the benefit of our girls. The ongoing support we receive from our parents, Old Scholars, suppliers, Board members, local businesses, staff and volunteers is invaluable.

We have received so much positive feedback and appreciation from those who attended. This year, we raised more than $90,000, with the proceeds to support our Building Fund. As we move into a new phase of our Master Plan in 2021, it is timely to reflect on the incredible evolution of our learning spaces over the past few years, and the prospect of further transformation in the years ahead.

Thank you again to everyone involved in making this event such a huge success; it was my absolute pleasure to work with all of you. If you require further information about future community events, our community groups, our Building Fund or the Foundation, please contact me via 8334 2244 or mwestgate@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au

Ambassadors Lead Path to Reconciliation

W10 - RAP Ambassador

At Saints Girls, we support reconciliation initiatives that raise our students’ awareness of Aboriginal histories and cultures whilst educating all about the power of equality. To support this goal, a group of passionate students put up their hands at the beginning of the year, electing to become RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) Ambassadors. They have been engaged from the ELC through to Senior School, presenting information and activities that promote this cause.

Last term, I was approached by a student impacted by the Black Lives Matter movement who wanted to get involved in making a difference. Her enthusiasm meant she joined the RAP team, and she has been driving activities throughout the School. With commitment by our students, this generation will lead the way with reconciliation.

Lisa Hollis
RAP Coordinator

I joined RAP because I want to make a change in our community. With the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement and various other racism concerns in the world, I decided to try to make a difference. I feel that it’s such an important issue and not many people really know or understand what is going on. I have learned so much about Aboriginal people’s lives and look forward to making a change around our School and trying to get more people to join and make a change with me.

Third Party Photography Notification

We have been informed by the Association of Independent Schools of South Australia (AISSA) that a third party school photography provider may have inadvertently caused a data breach involving several schools, including ours.

We understand that approximately 10 photographs of our students and staff, including names, taken during 2015 and 2016 are publicly accessible on the internet.

Schools are working with AISSA to rectify this situation, and we have been advised that the company has taken immediate steps to ensure this material is removed from public access.

The School has also notified the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner of this matter in line with reporting standards (case number OAIC-NDB-44976).

I sincerely apologise and wish to reassure you that the School takes the privacy of all staff, students and members of our community extremely seriously. As such, we are looking at ways in which we can continue to engage with third parties to ensure they are fully compliant with their privacy obligations.

Car Park Courtesy

The School has again received complaints about traffic blocking Stonyfell Road for lengthy periods during drop-off and pick-up. If the car park is full and you are unable to enter, circle the block until it is clear to enter, find a park elsewhere or, where age-appropriate, meet your daughter in a surrounding street. Unless special circumstances apply, parents of girls in Years 2 to 12 should not enter the car park to collect their daughters prior to 3.30pm. Parents of girls in Reception and Year 1 have exclusive use of the pick-up zone prior to this time for safety and traffic reasons.

Please also refrain from turning right into or out of the car park, and please do not queue in the car park’s lanes as this often prevents drivers who are legally parked from exiting.

We have also received complaints about cars being parked too close to driveways or across from other vehicles in surrounding streets, making it extremely difficult for residents and other road users to navigate.

We ask all community members to please show consideration for others; thank you for your cooperation.

SOCCER

Year 6 – Saints 2 defeated Pulteney 0
The team played a very exciting game against Pulteney Grammar, that resulted in a 2 – 0 win! Issy Tucker, Stella Spalvins and Alison Francis all did a great job in the midfield, attacking the goal and helping out in defence when needed. Lucy Lowry rotated through striker and played a brilliant game, scoring both goals with powerful shots from a distance. We were very impressed with the effort from Eliza Brill Reed and Grace Brockhouse who did not get pushed off the ball and always went back for a second attempt. We would like to give a huge thanks to Meghana Chettimada and Jiahui Zhang for playing in goals, they both stepped up to the position and didn’t let anything in! In our backline, Ruby Clark, Lucy Shigeno, Georgia Libri and Lyra Cox all did a great job of tackling the Pulteney players and getting the ball quickly out of defence, passing it to our midfielders. It was very exciting for the girls to finish the season with a win and they should all be very proud of themselves! – Ellie Anderson and Mary Stavrou (Coaches)

Year 5 – Saints 1 defeated by Seymour 2
The girls played a well-fought game for their last effort of the season. Defence was yet again strong, with Nishka Soodan playing a particularly solid game, keeping the ball away from our defensive end. Izzy Huf and Grace Mayen showed fantastic work rates, leading the midfield and forward line, who produced many opportunities upfront. Although it didn’t show in the score, Saints dominated the game, demonstrating the hard work and determination the girls have put into improving over this term. They have had a great season, and the results of their perseverance and commitment to improving at soccer have been evident in their gameplay in the past few games. Great effort by goalscorer Aleesha Gray, and thank you to our goalkeepers Romana Walsh and Grace Marsh-Smith. – Beth Cross (Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints 4 defeated Seymour 0
The final game of the season came around way too quickly this year. The girls were keen to continue their undefeated record and played another entertaining game against Seymour. Sophie Wiggins, Christina Balasis, Mika Valmorbida and Valentina Patino all played incredibly well in defence. Sophie Wiggins and Ruby Pahuja both enjoyed the responsibility of keeping clean sheets as goal keepers for a half each. Abbie Tulloch enjoyed another week up forward and teamed up nicely with Lauren Disney. Abbie scored 1 goal and Lauren scored 3 to set Saints up nicely with a 4-goal lead. St Peter’s Girls 4 defeating Seymour 0 to remain undefeated for season 2020! Well done girls, I look forward to seeing you back next year for another season. – Mark Routley (Coach)

State Champions in Artificial Intelligence

W9 - AI for Good

In news hot off the press, Saints Girls have claimed 1st prize in the SA/NT Finals of the Microsoft AI for Good Schools Challenge today! Year 10 Business, Enterprise and Technology students Genevieve Lochowiak and Chi Chi Zhao were selected from over 600 entries in the Senior division.

Their concept ‘DIVE’ – Drones In Voicing Emergencies – is a sophisticated system that aims to prevent and detect bushfires. Our young innovators will now work with mentors from Microsoft and volunteer firefighters to further their project as they prepare for the Australian Finals later this year, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Saints Girls who won the National title last year.

Congratulations girls on this outstanding achievement!

Saints Girls Retain Intercol Trophy

W9 - Intercol
Congratulations to our girls for taking out Intercol! We won Netball, Hockey and Badminton, while Walford claimed Soccer and Aussie Rules. Well done to girls from both schools for exhibiting great spirit and sportsmanship throughout.

The Winter Sport season has had many obstacles to overcome and the highlight came on the final Saturday of Intercol. Having seen Walford claim the Aussie Rules and Soccer earlier, it came down to the final three sports, all held on Saturday. Saints won the Badminton, quickly followed by victory in the Netball, and so sports were tied leading in to a late-starting Hockey match. The game was played with passion and pride, reflecting what Intercol stands for. The outcome, a well-deserved win for Saints, sealing the B Grade Shield in an undefeated season and the Hockey Intercol, ensuring we retained the Winifred Fenner (Walford) / Bernie Whitington (Saints) Winter Intercol trophy.

From Our Head of Junior School

W9 - Banner Image

Suzanne HaddyIt has been a wonderfully busy week once again in the Junior School. Parent-Teacher Interviews and Student-Led Conferences saw the School abuzz with hundreds of positive conversations taking place, celebrating student learning and sharing goals for the future. While conversations at the younger year levels were between parents and teachers only, the Year 3 to 6 students showed their growing ability to take charge of their own learning through Student-Led Conferences.

The Education Goals for Young Australians in the December 2019 Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Education Declaration, signed by all Australian Education Ministers, include the goal that young Australians become successful lifelong learners who develop their ability and motivation to learn, and play an active role in their own learning. Student-Led Conferences are an explicit way to foster this objective. They are essentially parent-teacher conferences in which the student is not just present, but in charge of demonstrating her progress, sharing reflections on her learning and explaining her next learning goals.

The advantages of this form of shared communication are many. They enable students to see that their opinions and experiences are valued by teachers and parents; they empower students to take responsibility for their learning; they reassure students that parents and teachers are here to support them; they give parents opportunities to see their daughter and teacher interact; and they hold students accountable for their own academic and behavioural choices.

I was delighted to witness the pleasure and empowerment on the faces of students as they thoughtfully prepared for, practised, then delivered their learning stories to their parents. I was equally delighted to see the justly proud faces of parents during and following their daughter’s presentations and explanations. We don’t always notice how quickly a child is growing when we see them every day. The same might be said about noticing how much they are learning. This week showed students and parents just how much learning has been achieved during the past term, and it was a lovely opportunity to reflect and celebrate.

Young Musicians Impress Proud Parents

W9 - Concert

Yesterday afternoon, many of our Junior School parents enjoyed an uplifting performance in the Arts Centre as our Year 2, 3 and 4 girls staged a special music concert.

Despite some students having learnt an instrument for only two and a half terms, all played with focus and confidence, from our Year 2s on recorder, to string ensembles and a band.

Have a listen to some of the highlights:

Esperanza Connects on National Live Stream

W9 - Esperanza

Last Saturday, Esperanza live-streamed nationally from the beautiful UKARIA Cultural Centre. One of only 12 Grand Finalists to be awarded Gold, the vocal ensemble had the honour of performing amongst some of Australia’s finest young musicians at Musica Viva’s Strike a Chord National Chamber Music Championship. Due to some technical issues during our live-stream, Esperanza performed not once but twice. To their immense credit, they took it all in their stride, performing both times with utter professionalism. The level of musicianship at this competition can only be described as outstanding, and Esperanza’s performance was no exception.

This is what the adjudicators had to say:

“Thank you for your stunningly beautiful and riveting performance. Wonderful musicianship all round. Excellent intonation, terrific balance, fantastic dynamic contrasts, and a great unified sense of phrase, gesture and line throughout. The energy of all musicians was channelled and unified completely as one. The intonation was first class, breathing was unified, diction was excellent, and the communication was sincere and compelling. I was moved and transfixed.”

Congratulations to all involved.

A Message From Our Sport Prefect

W9 - Sport 1
During Term 3, the School has enjoyed many sporting events and successes. On Friday of Week 7, we had Sports Day at the SA Athletics Stadium. It was great to see the support and teamwork of the Houses, cheering on girls from different age groups competing in track, field and novelty events. I am pictured above with Olivia Kelly, Lauren Disney and Charlotte McAuliffe who were announced as the Athletes of the Day for Senior, Junior and Middle School respectively. Of course, a special congratulations must go to Selwyn for winning the overall shield once again!

Last week, Saints competed in the Winter Intercol against Walford. Since Intercol was introduced in 2017, it has been a very successful event, growing in popularity each year. Many games were played in attempt to secure some of the trophies we had previously won. It was terrific to see lots of girls at the matches supporting the teams as we retained the overall trophy.

Next Friday, we have Summer Interhouse. The sports played will be Basketball, Touch Football, Tennis and Volleyball. Once again, it will be great to see House spirit during this event. Competing in team sports not only helps build self-esteem, you also develop strong relationships with girls from different year levels. If you are not competing, remember to still come out and show your House pride!

As we approach the end of term, much important school work will be due. This is particularly important for the Year 12s who will soon submit their last assignments and sit their final tests and exams. Exercising is a great way to relieve this stress as it goes beyond the physical gain. Remember to remain active, and if you are feeling stressed, even going on a small walk around the block will help.

Good luck for the rest of Term 3.

Millie Wilkin
Sport Prefect

House Spirit Sky High at Saints Girls

W9 - Junior School House Captains

Week 8 saw the conclusion of House Spirit Weeks for 2020. Middle and senior students from Kennion, Kilburn, Patteson and Selwyn have all embraced the unique House spirit at Saints by wearing their coloured ribbon for the week and adding a coloured accessory to their uniform on Fridays.

House Spirit Weeks provide an opportunity for students from each House to share and demonstrate their House pride to the rest of the School. The House Chapel, run by the House Captain, is a highly-anticipated service for the students. Favourite hymns are chosen by the Houses for the School to sing, and each House delivers a musical performance. This year, these pieces were phenomenal and it was great to see members from each year level getting involved, once again showcasing the special bond between peers in their House. I am pictured above with the Junior School House Captains.

At the conclusion of the week, each House gathers in the Arts Centre on Friday night for House Dinner. This is a special occasion where students from Years 7 to 12, teachers and Year 12 parents gather for a fun night filled with games, activities, and of course, food! The costumes students showcased this year were very creative, and it was amazing to see everyone enjoying the company of their fellow House mates and teachers. The Year 11 cohort plan each night down to the finest details and their effort in planning this year was impeccable. A special mention must also go to the Heads of House and Year 11 Home Group teachers for supporting these girls with this event!

At Saints, we are incredibly lucky to have a supportive, passionate and friendly culture within the four Houses, and events like House Chapel and Spirit Week are what girls will remember for years after they graduate. The bond between students from each House is truly special and it will be an aspect of school I, and all the Year 12s, will miss once we graduate next term.

Kennion House Dinner

W9 - Kennion

Last Friday, the Arts Centre came alive with Kennion’s House Dinner, this year themed ‘The Animal Kingdom’. Teachers and parents were welcomed by animals from every corner of the globe; from lions to jellyfish and even the occasional dinosaur! Blink and you might have missed the majestic Year 10 butterflies, the cast of The Little Mermaid, or the teachers in full body beekeeper suits.

The night opened with a touching video by our House Captain Liv Goldsmith and Deputy Sarah Wishart, showcasing Kennion’s highlights over the past few years. Everyone enjoyed playing ‘Guess the song’, with the parents just coming out on top with their indisputable knowledge of animal-themed classics. Jan Tam showed off her zoological skills in ‘Guess the animal Kahoot’, and the Year 8 seals secured a win in ‘Guess the baby’. In between games, everyone dined on an entrée of spring rolls, party pies and sausage rolls, followed by a delicious barbecue dinner of sausages, veggie patties and a large range of salads. Dessert proved a hit, with homemade brownies and ice-cream enjoyed by all.

‘Best dressed’ was one of the most-anticipated events, and the Year 11s certainly struggled to choose from the amazing range of costumes. Notable mentions included Year 11 Jenna Bowden as a show-stopping papier-mâché pufferfish, Year 9s Georgia Mallick and Mary Stavrou as inflatable cows, and of course, our teacher winners, Mrs Kitching as a lion tamer and Ms Weber as Steven Irwin. However, the highlight of the night was the incredible performance by the Year 12s who demonstrated amazing moves in their Year 12 dance, despite not being able to practice for several months.

Thank you to all of the Year 11 parent volunteers who so kindly devoted their night to cooking and serving all of the food. A huge congratulations to the Year 11s for organising the event; your enthusiasm and effort did not go unnoticed. Your preparations certainly paid off, as this year’s House Dinner will go down as one of the best.

Year 6 Go Green and Clean

W9 - Year 6b

This week, the Year 6 students enjoyed hearing from Old Scholar Charlie Aykroyd (Kennion 2010) as they begin to shift their thinking towards their final PYP inquiry. As the General Manager of Australian Green Clean, Charlie shared her passion for sustainable waste management and her vision for a ‘no waste to landfill’ future.

Global data was shared about the current state of waste management around the world, indicating a need for action and change. The girls asked questions, heard about some innovative ideas in the market and gained knowledge about small steps we can each take to reduce the footprint we leave on our planet.

Sports News

W9 - Intercol 2

As the shortened and modified Winter season comes to a close, I wish to thank coaches, staff supervisors and coordinators, officials, students and parents for your support.

Saints will enter the IGSSA (Years 7 – 12) Athletics Carnival next Wednesday in a very strong position to retain the Field and overall Athletics shields.

The success of our programs comes from a variety of areas; but like any code, any sport, any team, the results are delivered by the players. All Saints Girls and their families who elect to represent the School do so with a level of commitment and pride that has given me 12 years of wonderful memories as my tenure nears its end.

I am hoping that the remainder of the year can provide further success to individuals and teams, but at the end of the day, goals can only be achieved if those who set them are determined to reach them.

Director of Sport

AUSSIE RULES

Open – Saints 0.0 – 0 defeated by Sacred Heart 9.13 – 67
Although the score was not in our favour, the girls’ last game of the season was a great one. They showcased all of the skills they have developed over the past term of training and had a fun 60 minutes of footy. We communicated well and the sportsmanship was truly outstanding. Special mention must go to Ella Dnistriansky who played her best game of footy yet. She fought hard for the ball and never game up. Overall, this season has been a tremendous one. The improvement seen within the girls is truly commendable and I can’t believe the season has come to an end. It has been an honour playing this sport for the School over the past three years, and I cannot wait to come back and see all of the younger girls work their way up to playing Senior footy. Special mention also to Nick and Emily, our coaches for this season. They taught the girls not only how to improve their footy ability but also made it so exciting to play the sport. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Saints’ footy! – Bella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 0.4 – 4 defeated by Sacred Heart 4.2 – 26
The last game of the season did not end as we would have hoped, but the girls were always in the contest against some strong bodies. Jasmine Segredos had a breakout game on the wing, providing excellent run and explosion out of contests. The girls had a number of chances going forward, finishing with more inside 50s than the opposition, but could not convert the opportunities. Sophie Edwardes, Annie Warrick and Amy Dillon were consistent, whilst Lilly Maerschel and Ellie Humphrey combined to move the ball out of the middle from Chloe Porter’s dominant taps. – Dan Searle (Coordinator)

BADMINTON

Congratulations to all the girls who played on Saturday, it was a magnificent end to the season. A special shoutout to our A Grade girls for winning the shield! Saints also claimed the Badminton in the Intercol against Walford which is amazing. Well done girls!

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 18 defeated by Walford 28
The girls had a great finish, managing the most points in a game which is fantastic! So much improvement; the girls even commented on how we don’t win much but have improved a lot which is the main thing! Thanks for an enjoyable season girls and for always having such positive attitudes, you never gave up. Hope to see you all have another go at school basketball next year! – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 6 defeated By Pembroke 35
The team played very well this game and all season. Despite the loss, the score line didn’t reflect how well they played. Aside from the first quarter, the girls managed to keep Pembroke to 2 goals each quarter. The girls had a great season. – Sarah Matheson (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 40 defeated Wilderness Orange 6
The girls had an excellent last match, dominating from the first quarter. They played well as a team with almost everyone scoring and working hard to make space in offence. They made many intercepts and played hard defence, sticking to their players and stopping Wilderness from scoring. – Emma Matheson (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open – Saints 2 defeated Walford 0
Walford’s A Grade team were a challenging opposition. The game started strongly with Saints dominating attacking circle entries and outcomes, but it wasn’t until the end of the first quarter when we managed to find the back of the net. The first goal came from a short corner where Bridgette Leach rebounded the ball from the goalie’s pads to Amelia Lucas who scored. Every player had an awesome game, and it was great to see everyone back themselves and win their individual contests to outplay Walford’s defence. The second goal was scored after the third quarter siren off a short corner. It was a great way to finish the season and well done to the girls for winning Intercol! A further congratulations to the team for also being undefeated for the season! Well Done. – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 13 defeated North Adelaide 11
The girls were all very nervous to play in the first round of finals. North Adelaide has been one of the stronger teams. From the first whistle, the girls played hard, putting in 100% effort from the centre draws. The score throughout was relatively close which meant the girls had to step it up in the fourth quarter. The defence line was very successful in holding up any fast breaks from down the field. They were also able to clear the ball down into the attacking half well. Emily Bates did another amazing job as goalie, making many big saves. The attackers were great at placing their shots and even began to settle the play and incorporate some cuts and feeds which they have been practising at training. It was great to see the girls’ development, implementing their training and skills. This win has secured the girls a place in the Grand Final! – Millie Wilkin (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 11 Blue – Saints 12 defeated Eagles 3
Congratulations Saints Blue on ending the season on such a high note! Everyone played a superb game. All teammates assisted each other by using their speed to get open and make passes. Our stick skills were excellent with passing, catching and ground balls very effective. Even with the mercy rule applied, the team still dominated the game play and were able to make intercepts and leads easily. Well done to all, with special mention to goal scorers Juliette Tang (also great goalie), Matilda Birmingham, Matilda Purvis, Millie Lively and Chelsea Francis. Also a special mention to Eliza Curry as goalie for the first half who made some very brave saves. The team has come a long way together, bonding in games and trainings. The season was highly successful and enjoyable, with everyone becoming confident and passionate lacrosse players. I hope to see many of your faces again next year.

Under 11 White – Saints 5 defeated East Torrens Payneham 2
All of the girls were eager to play the last game of the season well. Our attack was great with the girls running hard into our third and working to get free to be the next pass. Lois Burton-Howard (Year 4), Willow Chong (Year 3) and Lilly Silvani did this particularly well. Also in attack, the girls were told to move around their defender to get a better angle to shoot goals, which Neela (Year 4) did perfectly. Anvika Singh (Year 4) and Mathilda Begg (Year 3) once again showed determination when going for ground balls and winning them several times. At half-time, the girls were down by 2 goals and needed to improve on shooting in the corners of the goal. In the second half, the girls did this successfully. It was great to see Grace Marshall (Year 3) and Lola Silvani run with the ball and look for the best option to pass to. Our fantastic goalies were Scarlett Schinella (Year 3) and Ruby Kelly (Year 4). Goal scorers were Neela (2), Anvika (1), Willow (1) and Grace (1). All of the girls did a great job and showed their improved skills. It was a pleasure to coach these girls and I hope they continue the sport in the future.

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 42 defeated Walford 30
What an outstanding game! The girls finished the season with strong determination and great positivity. Each member played a solid game in both attack and defence, which enabled for increased flow of drives and many turnovers. Maggie Bailey and Anna White cooperated amazingly in the goal circle, using each other to set up plays to allow Amelia Pudney and Alexia Politis to feed the ball beautifully into the circle, over the top of tall defence. Sarah Wishart and Ehi Oyugbo made many touches to the ball, which disrupted play and challenged the opposition. Liv Kelly, again, was the best player of the match for her outstanding tally of intercepts and competence in both centre and defence. Unfortunately, Maggie Bailey, who was playing one of her best games, injured her knee; we wish her all the best for a speedy recovery. Joss Forster from Open Bs stepped up to the mark and scored many goals for the team; thank you Joss. Finally, special mentions go to the Year 12s: Ehi Oyugbo, Sarah Wishart, Maggie Bailey and Hannah Freeman for playing their last ever school netball match! – Hannah Freeman (Captain)

Open B – Saints 49 defeated Walford 33
The Open Bs had a great last game against Walford, leading from start to finish. Our shooters Joss and Toni worked well in the circle together and had consistent shooting. Toni Christiansen, in particular, moved the ball efficiently between the mid-courters and shooters in her first game back from a knee injury. Thalia was continuously an option in attack and, along with Sadie Vikor-Lam, did well to drive the ball down the court. Milly Brett and Anda Ceplite played well with constant intensity. Our defenders Ruby Deakin and Lucy White put immense pressure on their players in all four quarters, as did all the girls. The win finished off a fantastic season. Thanks to our coaches Sue and Steph for their encouragement and support throughout. – Gemma Schaedel

Open E1 – Saints 28 defeated Walford 16
A great Intercol win against Walford! The girls played a top match, gaining a strong lead in the first quarter and holding onto it throughout the rest of the game. Best player was Jess Wishart. Well done on a great finish to your school netball girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Open E2 – Saints 8 defeated by Walford 35
A disappointing result on the scoreboard but the girls had a very enjoyable game using it as an opportunity to play in a position unfamiliar to them. Best player was Charlotte Bleby. Well done on a great season girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Year 10C – Saints 3 defeated by Walford 22
Once again, the girls played a fantastic game that wasn’t reflected by the score. Charlotte Adams, Ruby Thorp and Samantha Keough were dynamic in defence, turning over every couple of balls, but the conversions were what let us down in the end. Still, great work by all girls across the court for putting every ounce of effort in for the final game. Massive thank you to the girls for this season! – Elena Vaananen (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 56 defeated Walford 15
A great game to finish off the season. Annie Warrick had a stand-out match in goal attack and Maddie Harrex’s teamwork in the ring was the best of her season. Georgia Mallick was solid in goalkeeper as always and continued a strong game when she moved to goal defence. An excellent game by all players and a thoroughly enjoyable season. – Della Griffith (Coach)

Year 9B – Saints 57 defeated Walford 8
The team had a great win. Usually, they are a bit slow to get started, but they played the best first half of a game I have seen all term. Everything we had been working on during the term all came together, which was good to see, especially their centre passes. It has been fantastic to watch their individual and team skills grow over this term. – Natasha Dinan (Coach)

Year 9C – Saints 22 defeated by Scotch 35
Although we didn’t bring home a win, the girls all played very well! The Scotch team were down two players so a few of the Year 9C girls offered to help out and play for the other team; thanks so much to Isobel Yelland, Lucy Schirripa and Lila Gosse for showing true sportsmanship! Overall, we have had such a wonderful season – well done to all the girls! – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 49 defeated Walford 9

Year 8B – Saints 70 defeated Walford 4
The team played an amazing last game against Walford. Alice Braithwaite, Jasmine Segredos and Ayla Blaskett provided an extremely strong attacking side, allowing the team to score 70 goals. Daisy Braithwaite and Ayanna Roy deployed several tactics we have learnt during the season. Our defence, consisting of Olivia Oakes, Ruby Adams and Scarlett Dillion, did a terrific job of defending the ball down the court. The team managed to play an excellent four quarters, resulting in a well-deserved victory for our final game. – Charlotte Norman

Year 8C – Saints 24 defeated Concordia 12
The girls started their final game with high energy and enthusiasm. The great improvement in their skills and teamwork which they have developed over the season was demonstrated throughout. The girls played a consistent game until the end, digging deep in the final quarter, as no subs and the warmer weather contributed to fatigue. Best player was Ruby Powell who made many good shots at goal and her defensive pressure was effective in producing several touches and intercepts. Great finish to the season girls! – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 8D – Saints 6 defeated by Pulteney 34
The team had a great last game despite losing to Pulteney. They had a slower start than normal; however, with some encouragement from one another, they picked up the intensity and increased possession. They had a greater level of talk, and on court connections improved. Pulteney had a strong attack end that the girls found hard to defend, but they didn’t give up, finishing strongly and having some fun with one another to finish the season. It has been a pleasure coaching the Year 8D team and their positive attitudes are a credit to them. Thank you for the opportunity and for your assistance along the way! – Gina Barker (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 21 defeated by Walford 22
The girls played a tight game against Walford, especially the in last quarter with both teams trying hard to secure the victory. The defence started a bit rough in the first quarter but quickly picked up. Well done to Zara Wallace who was our most consistent player. The game went down to the wire, but unfortunately, Walford scored the last goal in the last few seconds. Good game girls, you all gave 100% and next season we will all come out stronger! – Olivia Coulter (Coach)

Year 4 Blue – Saints 9 defeated Seymour 7
WOW! What a game for the last of the season. Strong teamwork, defence, determined mid-court, accurate shooting. Well done to Matilda, Aoife, Emily, Meg, Aarcha, Caitlyn, Abbie, Victoria and Leila, and thank you to Evie who helped out this match. A special thank you to all the parents for their support throughout the season. Could not be prouder of the girls. – Karen Braund (Proud Coach)

Year 4 White – Saints 1 defeated by Wilderness 12
Saints played a tough last game, facing a very consistent and comprehensive team from Wilderness. The girls did not lose their spirit and kept trying, attacking at every ball despite the strong defensive pressure applied by their opponents. It was a challenging game, and unfortunately, we weren’t able to win. It was great to see such a huge improvement from all the girls throughout this season and I wish them the best of luck for upcoming seasons! – Sivani Sivasuthan (Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 15 defeated Wilderness Orange 2
What a way to finish the season. Every girl played their positions with determination. Lola moved under the ring easily and scored 4 goals in two quarters; Sasha Connor passed the ball into the goals with much-needed precision; Sophia Curry moved the ball down the court with clear leads; Charlotte Di Blasio positioned herself beautifully to collect rebounds with ease; Victoria Hii was her speedy self, getting in front of her player to receive passes; Ruby Pahuja took countless intercepts and put a lot of pressure on the opposition’s attack end; Bonnie Qu made it almost impossible for the opposition to receive a pass; Lydia Zhao was tireless through the centre court; and Anisha Pahuja scored a whopping 11 goals! I’d like to also give a big, hearty shout out to our super-encouraging parent supporters. Your positive energy lifted the girls throughout all of our matches; thank you! I hope you all enjoyed the well-deserved pizza party. – Rebecca Scott-Toms (Coach)

SOCCER

Year 6 – Saints 5 defeated Wilderness 1
The girls played another excellent match. They showed some great attacking skills, making some great passes to ensure the ball remained in our possession. A great goal was within the first two minutes by Alyssa Piantedosi, again displaying her strong attacking skills. Lucy Lowry also made multiple attempts to score goals, eventually scoring 2 remarkable goals, one even from outside the box! Special mentions to Lucy Shigeno and Georgia Libri for playing a strong game in defence. The team work and determination from the girls was truly reflected in the final result. Goals: Alyssa Piantedosi (2), Lucy Lowry (2) and Allison Francis (1). Great game girls, keep up the good work! – Ellie Anderson & Mary Stavrou (Coaches)

Year 5 – Saints 1 defeated Wilderness 0
A fantastic effort all round to bring in a win against a strong team. The girls had one of their best team games yet, with some fantastic passages of cooperative play leading to many goal opportunities. As always, the defence was strong, with Lilly Forby and Zalia Valmorbida showing their improvement over the season in a well-fought game. The midfield and forward line showed initiative and ran hard to ensure they made use of opportunities up front. Well done to goal scorer Aleesha Gray, and thanks to our goalkeepers Isabella Blake and Aleiyah Abraham. – Beth Cross (Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints 2 drew with Wilderness 2
The game was very evenly matched with both teams having several opportunities to creep ahead. Abbie Tulloch slotted through 2 goals to cement a spot for the final game as a forward. Our defence was particularly strong throughout, led by Christina Balasis. Mika Valmorbida played another top game to back up her previous effort. Sophie Wiggins was instrumental and cleared the ball many times, even attempting a shot at goal from the halfway line. With only one game remaining for the season, this team is still yet to be defeated. – Mark Routley (Coach)

eNews – Week 8, Term 3 2020

Issue no. 28Enews-banner

W8 - Banner Image Sports Day

From Our Deputy Principal / Head of Middle School

Richard Lisle inside 220Everyone will have a favourite memory from last week’s Sports Day. Many will have fond memories of the way the girls received the news that, after 12 years of distinguished service, Neil Fuller will be stepping down as Director of Sport – their genuine display of gratitude and affection was a pleasure to witness. For some, maybe the photo finish to the Year 12 Relay, or the near-perfect handicapping of the Saints Girls’ gift which saw Year 5 student Phoebe Lucas hold off Year 12 track star Millie Wilkin by just about 20cm! Others will remember the excitement of being in the crowd around the High Jump mat as another School record was set, or being part of a winning Tunnel Ball team that’s now been unbeaten for nine years. Perhaps it was seeing girls attempt an event that was clearly out of their comfort zone, such as Javelin or the Hurdles, or maybe sitting back in awe as sprinters seemed to glide down the track in pursuit of each other, of the finish line, and maybe another personal best.

My abiding memory occurred in a Junior School 100m race. With five or six races in each year group, these events can tend to blend into one another. This one stood out to me because it encompassed with complete clarity what we often talk about as the essence of a ‘Saints Girl’. With about 20 metres to go in a reasonably tight race, one runner, striving for that extra ounce of effort, tripped up and came crashing down onto the track. In a flash, and despite what was evidently not inconsiderable pain, she got up and continued to finish the race for her House, showing admirable grit, determination and courage in the process. As she finished, just two or three seconds behind the other girls, she was immediately surrounded by her fellow runners, all far keener on checking her wellbeing and commiserating with her, than celebrating their own achievements. That instinctive compassion, and the genuine sense of care and community which it builds, is what makes Saints Girls such a powerful place to belong to.

With our Year 9 and 10 students heading off on their week-long camps on Monday, all sleeping under canvas, there will be further opportunities to show courage and compassion, and the chance to deepen their networks of support for each other. We wish them and their teachers well, and hope they enjoy more than a glimpse of the spring weather we’ve welcomed this week.

Finally, I’d like to congratulate the way our Year 8 and 9 students prepared for and carried out their exams. It was encouraging to see so many girls had heeded advice from their subject teachers on how best to prepare for each subject, whilst also using strategies and resources available through our #EMPOWHER wellbeing program.

SACE Concert Music to the Ears

What a wonderful feeling it was for our Music girls to perform to a live audience at last night’s SACE Music Concert. It’s been six months since they’ve had the chance to share their music performances on stage to friends and family, and they did not disappoint.

Our Year 12 students completed the practical components to their Music subjects, supported by their peers and fellow musicians. I think the highlight for all was the ABBA audience singalong, our finale for the evening’s event. It was a fabulous night of creativity and community.

Check out the highlights video below. Music credit to Year 11 student Georgie Raftopoulos, who wrote and performed an original song called ‘Standing In Your Shadow’.

Golden Journey for Dedicated Saints Girl

W8 - Gold Award

Congratulations to Year 12 student Matilda Braithwaite who has achieved the Gold Award in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

The Award allows young Australians aged 14 – 24 to explore their full potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world, regardless of their location or circumstance.

The Four Sections of the Award are: Physical Recreation; Skills; Voluntary Service; Adventurous Journey plus Gold Residential Project (Gold Level only).

Through Matilda’s Award journey, she has participated in a wide range of activities within and outside of school including:

Physical Recreation – swimming, triathlon, athletics and rowing
Skills – debating and sport umpiring
Service – cooking for a food bank, delivering breakfasts to those in need and coaching athletics
Adventurous Journey – Year 9 and 10 camps plus Rowing Camp

Matilda completed her Gold Residential Project by attending the Cambodia Service Learning Trip.

Achieving the Gold Award recognises individual goal-setting and self-improvement through persistence, and Matilda certainly embodies this. After her three year journey, she will be honoured at a ceremony with the Lord Mayor next month.

Well done Matilda!

Microsoft Artificial Intelligence Finalists

W8 - State finalists
In the Year 10 Business, Enterprise and Technologies course, our class explored Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it can be used for different applications in today’s climate. We entered the Microsoft AI for Good Schools Challenge earlier this year, and one team has been successful with their application.

Chi Chi Zhao and Genevieve Lochowiak presented their project, DIVE (Drones In Voicing Emergencies), a system to prevent and detect bushfires. DIVE is through to the South Australia and Northern Territory Finals, competing against more than 600 other teams. They submit their final entry early next week and we all look forward to hearing the results. All the best!

Aerobics Girls Pumped Up by Challenge

W8 - Aerobics 3

After a stop-start season due to the global climate, the Saints Girls’ Aerobics teams were finally able to show off their skills and compete in the Blitz It Challenge. This was the first competition for many girls in our youngest team, The Fab 5. They competed in the Cadet Large Aerobics Team division and came 2nd against a large array of schools across Adelaide.

Both of Saints’ Middle/Senior teams have been eager to hit the stage for many months. Liquid Gold and The G.O.A.Ts won 3rd and 1st respectively against a few Loreto teams in the Junior Large Aerobics Team division.

Our Aerobics girls worked incredibly hard for these achievements and have been proud representatives of the School. Congratulations to all who competed.

Runaway Success at Cross Country

W8 - Cross Country

On Wednesday 2 September, 12 Saints Girls raced in teams of four in the SAAS Cross Country State Relay Championships, the last event of the season held at Waite Oval, Urrbrae. The girls ran incredibly well over the season, dominating the Middle and Primary points for girls. A special mention to Isla Fahey, Elodie de Wit and Chloe Richardson for helping Saints Girls climb to the top in the Middle Girls’ division, even though they were originally in the Primary Girls’ division and missed the first two races.

In the relays, Elodie de Wit, Chloe Richardson, Cleo Hart and Charlotte McAuliffe (running in replacement of injured Isla Fahey) claimed 1st place in Primary Girls. In the Middle Girls, Saints Girls had two teams. The second team of Poppy Marshall (volunteering to make up the full second team for the relay), Lady Murphy, Eleanor Saies and Dani Cox took out 3rd place, and the first team consisting of Daisy Braithwaite, Malaika McLeod, Carys Kinsella-White and Alice Braithwaite came 1st. A special mention to Malaika for winning every single Middle Girls’ race.

Everyone contributed to make the season a huge success for the School. Congratulations to all the girls for giving it a go and helping the team. Can’t wait for next season.

Kilburn House Dinner

W8 - Kilburn House Dinner 2

You could feel the tension between the heroes and villains in the Arts Centre on Friday night of Week 5. It was Kilburn’s annual House Dinner featuring this year’s theme ‘Heroes and Villains of Hollywood’. We were visited by heroes such as Superman, the Incredibles and Cat Woman, up against the most evil villains including Thanos, The Joker and Maleficent. Celeb spotters also identified Hollywood stars such as Britney Spears! For dinner, we enjoyed a tasty feast including party pies, sausage rolls and spring rolls for entrée, a variety of delicious, fresh pizzas for mains, and some sweet cake with ice cream for dessert.

All the girls and staff competed in ‘Guess the Baby Face’ and the ‘House Dinner Quiz’, testing their knowledge about heroes and villains as well as facts of Hollywood. But the most enjoyable part to watch was the lip sync battle where contestants from each year level, including staff, competed against other year levels to show off their acting and singing skills. Tesse and Alyssa won overall for incorporating their very special guest Mrs O’Brien into their choreography. It was also pretty funny to see Mrs O’Brien and Mr Byrne show us their moves to ‘You’re The One That I Want’ from Grease.

All the costumes the girls and staff showed up in were amazing and very creative. A ‘best-dressed’ was announced at the end of the night for each year level as well as an overall best dressed which was awarded to Sophie Kameniar who came as Thanos. A big thank you to all the Year 11 parents, staff (especially Mrs O’Brien), and of course, the Kilburn girls for making the night one to remember.

Young Chicks Attend Saints Girls

W8 - Chickens

Excitement ran high last Monday as three little chicks and 12 eggs arrived for the Year 2 scientific inquiry into lifecycles. Over the past fortnight, the girls have made detailed scientific observations into the growth and development of the chicks as they hatched and grew. They observed that hatching lasts quite a while. The chick makes a little hole in the shell but takes some time to work on it until the egg cracks open. Some chicks take about 20 minutes while others can last up to five hours, and sometimes you can hear little chirps from inside the egg. When the chicks come out, they are really cute and wet. They need to stay in the incubator for at least five hours for their feathers to fluff up and then they can move to the brooding pen.

Over the two weeks, the chicks have grown much bigger. They’ve started to lose their down as their feathers grow. Each has a different personality. Popcorn and Ninja love to perch and are starting to fly. Whitney and Brittany like to be together and they chirp loudly if they are apart! The girls are delighted that the chicks are being adopted by one of our staff members, Ann Li, and will continue to have a special connection to the Saints Girls’ community!

Fine Dining with Stage 2 Food and Hospitality

W8 - Food and Hospitality

On Thursday 3 September, the Stage 2 Food and Hospitality girls were pleased to undertake their final group practical activity. They planned and presented a formal dinner with an Asian-inspired theme. Each student was responsible for the preparation and banquet service of at least one dish. The dinner was enjoyed by family members in the Food Technology Centre, which was transformed into a beautifully decorated contemporary restaurant.

The students participated in all aspects of the organisation of the dinner from identifying the theme, selecting and trialling dishes, choosing the décor and plating, and arranging the order and timing of the service. They consistently shared ideas and supported each other with the decisions made. They were also involved in creating an invitation, considering dietary needs and preferences, and making the final choices on all aspects of the event. The menu consisted of an entrée of spring rolls, san choy bow, prawn wontons, pork dumplings, followed by a main course of lemon chicken, pad Thai, coconut chicken curry and beef with black bean served with an Asian-inspired salad and fried and steamed Rice. Dessert was pandan crepes with shredded coconut and palm sugar.

The event enabled each student to showcase the organisation and time-management skills they have developed over the year and to experience some of the reality of serving a larger group in a collaborative manner.

AUSSIE RULES

Open – Saints 2.1 – 13 defeated by Immanuel 11.12 – 78
Despite the score not being in our favour, the girls played extremely well against a highly-experienced side. They fought hard for the ball and made space across the field. They all communicated well and, as a collective, we never stopped trying, which is all you could ever ask for. Special mention must go to the Middle School girls who stepped up to the plate and played extremely well in a Seniors’ game. I can’t wait to play my last game of footy with these girls and see just how far we have come. – Bella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints did not play

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 12 defeated by Seymour 54
Great team effort and special mention to Jiahui Zhang who scored 6 points. Really good to see the girls grow in shooting confidence and be rewarded. Seymour had a lot of talented players and we did a wonderful job trying to stop them with our defence on the smaller courts there; it was tricky! – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 14 defeated by Walford 22
The girls played well, scoring the first points of the match. They played their best defence yet, sticking on their players, allowing them to get numerous intercepts and rebounds. The girls should be proud of their performance as they have improved a lot since their first game. – Emma Matheson (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 26 defeated Walford Blue 20
This is the second time we have played Walford Blue this season and they have been our toughest competition. We had a large lead early, but Walford kept fighting to stay within 10 points for most of the game. Another great team effort from all the girls with over half of the team scoring points. – Katherine Perkas (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open – Saints 1 defeated Immanuel 0
Immanuel provided tougher competition as the girls followed their efforts at Sports Day with a hard game. Saints played their positions well and provided a strong defensive press which gave Immanuel little options for their outlet. Holly Cardone moved into a half back position and created many attacking opportunities coming out of defence. Amelie Eaton played well as left attacking midfield, using her talented skills of back stick trapping to eliminate her opponent in a single movement. Well done to the girls for scoring a goal in the third quarter and holding the lead for the rest of the game. I’m excited to see what the girls bring to our Intercol game against Walford. – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 10 defeated East Torrens/Payenham 6
The team played a very competitive game, resulting in a 10 – 6 win! Claris Stolcman and Cleo Hart put in 100% and scored many goals. Jamie Gower (guest player) and Alannah Godfrey helped in the midfield, along with Zoe Pool who hustled hard for every ground ball, gaining procession. The defence was particularly strong with Eliza Burmester and Matilda Wilkin staying tight on their defenders and running hard for any loose balls. Congratulations again to Emily Bates who played a top game in goals, making some exceptional saves. Great game girls! – Millie Wilkin (Lacrosse Captain)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 30 defeated by Scotch 50
In the first quarter, scores were level at 13 – 13. This was due to the girls’ great determination and intensity. They worked well together and fed the ball into the circle cautiously but accurately. We collaborated and communicated, enabling connections to be made down the court from defence line throw-ins. Best players were Olivia Kelly, Anna White and Alexia Politis. All players stepped up to the challenge and took on board Sue’s feedback from training. The girls have improved since our last game and are excited for Intercol. Let’s go girls. – Hannah Freeman (Captain)

Open B – Saints 36 defeated by Scotch 37
The Open Bs had a great game against Scotch, with the girls applying pressure down the court in all four quarters. We started off slightly behind in the first, but got back into the game due to increased drive down the court. Ruby Deakin and Lucy White did particularly well to steer the ball out of defence and down to our attackers. Milly Brett had an outstanding last quarter in WA by moving the ball efficiently down to our shooters, along with obtaining many intercepts. Ehi Oyugbo from the Open As played with us and had a great first game back from injury. A fantastic effort from all the girls! – Gemma Schaedel

Open E1 – Saints 28 defeated Scotch 22
A very exciting end to the girls’ school netball with another win. We were behind at half-time, but worked hard in the third quarter to make a strong comeback and secure the final win. Best player was Amelia Goehr for her perfect shooting in the third quarter. Well done on a great season and best of luck in the future girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Open E2 – Saints had a bye

Year 10A – Saints 17 defeated by Scotch 66
It was a tough game for the As, facing a very consistent and comprehensive side with undeniable State talent. It was still a good performance from our girls, scoring when we moved the ball down our end, but our opponent’s defensive pressure built across the whole game. The girls did not lose their spirit and kept trying, which was impressive to see under difficult circumstances. We definitely built throughout the game, and started to focus on our leads and using fakes to force the defenders to jump at the ball. Still impressed with the performance and can see how much the girls have improved during the season. – Milli Gentle (Coach)

Year 10B – Saints had a bye

Year 10C – Saints 6 defeated by Immanuel 56
Tough game again, facing another Immanuel team. The defensive efforts by duo Charlotte Adams and Ayshviina Nair were fantastic, allowing us to have a lot of possession and work on the connections down court. One more game of the season and I have faith this may be our lucky one! – Elena Vaananen (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 48 defeated Scotch 34
It was the best game the girls have played so far and they fixed up all the issues from the previous game. It was an outstanding effort and we hope they can finish the season on a high. – Della Griffith (Coach)

Year 9B – Saints 30 defeated by Scotch 35
After a slow start, the girls played very well later on, winning the last two quarters. Both Maddy Lisle and Samantha Keough were in fine form. They played full games and were able to communicate very well. Ruby Richards also played her best game for the season, acting as a critical player in moving the ball from defence to attack, as well as keeping the ball in our attacking half. – Natasha Dinan (Coach)

Year 9C – Saints 30 defeated Immanuel 8
An outstanding effort from the team. Immanuel put up a good fight and the Saints Girls lifted in response, playing at their full potential. Best players were Lila Gosse and Georgina Wakeham, both scoring a number of the goals towards the win. – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 14 defeated by Scotch 52
The girls played a hard game against Scotch. Our defence of Gloria Zou, Sophie Edwards, Airlie McCabe and Charlotte Norman were amazing and tried their hardest with Scotch’s attack being very strong. Airlie McCabe was always at the third line ready to reset the play on the attack side when needed. Sophie Ricciuto, Soph Ryan and Charlie Piper all did well in shooting, but had a very tough game with the opposition’s defence. Our mid-court of Mathilda Thomas and Claudia Pearce did a terrific job of bringing the ball down the court to the attack. It was a challenging game but we all tried our hardest. – Charlie Piper

Year 8B – Saints 26 defeated Scotch 17
The girls played an amazing game and all put in lots of effort. Our defence was strong, with Olivia Oakes and Ruby Adams making many intercepts in the goal third. Throughout, there were many strong leads and great turnovers. The mid-court were fluent in moving the ball down and getting it to our shooters who were consistent with their goals. Special mention to Ruby Adams for being player of the match. Everyone played their hardest, resulting in a well-deserved win; good job girls. – Jasmine Segredos

Year 8C – Saints 25 defeated Pembroke 14
Saints began strongly, finishing the first quarter 9 – 1. As fatigue began to set in during the second, the girls made a few extra mistakes; their leads were not as sharp, and consequently, the score became closer. To their credit, the girls got back into the right mindset and controlled the play in the final two quarters. Best player was Charlie Edwards who, playing centre and wing attack, greatly assisted the flow of our attack by leading into space and making quick and accurate passes into the goalies. – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 8D – Saints 6 defeated by Pulteney 31
The girls were much stronger in transitioning the ball into our attacking end, giving us more shots at goal. It was quite back and forth for both teams. Our passing let us down at times; however, we had some great intercepts. Pulteney had a flawless shooting circle which was tough for our defenders. Despite the loss, the girls played one of their better games of the season. Improvements in areas of play compared with the beginning of the season are evident. – Gina Barker (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 26 defeated by Scotch 38
The girls played a tight game against Scotch and each quarter was close. The defence started to loosen at half-time and the ball was making it into their goals. A shout out to Carys Kinsella-White and Jodhi Pincombe in goals, as once the ball got down to the attack side, there was goal after goal. Tough game girls, you all tried your hardest. Next time, we can come out stronger and ready to win our last game of the season! – Olivia Reynolds

Year 7B – Saints 12 defeated by Scotch 36
This game was extremely tough, but we tried our absolute hardest. The third quarter was the most even because of Matilda Powell and Emily Tolladay’s defending skills. They knocked out may balls, keeping us level. At half-time we were getting closer to catching up but we missed some passes and shots. In the last quarter, everyone pushed to their limits to finish off with a bang. We ran our hardest, tried our hardest, shot our hardest, defended our hardest, but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to win. Great job girls, this game was tough. GO SAINTS! – Alyssa Tran

Year 4 Blue – Saints 10 defeated by Pembroke Blue 11
Wow! What a great match. Saints played a strong team game. Coming from behind, the girls never gave up, keeping Pembroke scoreless in the second quarter, outscoring Pembroke 4 – 2 in the third, but unfortunately, just 2 short of a win. Awesome game girls. Well Done. – Karen Braund (Proud Coach)

Year 4 White – Saints 14 defeated Seymour 6
All the girls worked as a team, with the mid-court maintaining drive and our defence making a number of turnovers and really standing out in the defensive half. The 7 – 1 lead in the first quarter definitely helped the team secure a great lead and position for the rest of the game. The girls showed more positive transitions from defence to attack and an increased ability to convert this into goals. It was excellent to have another win! Next time, the girls will be playing their last game for the season, so it would be great if we can finish with another win! – Sivani Sivasuthan (Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 9 defeated Wilderness Green 2
A thrilling match against the only side that has beaten us this term, back in the first round. The entire team was very hard to beat defensively. Wilderness had a lot of trouble getting the ball down the court due to all of our girls putting pressure on their players and collecting any loose balls. Ruby and Lydia moved beautifully in goals together, providing many options for passers. Great match, can’t wait for the next! – Rebecca Scott-Toms (Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Walford 4
The Open A girls played the annual Intercol game against Walford which unfortunately resulted in a loss. We started strongly, applying high pressure and stopping Walford from having shots on goal. The result was 0 – 0 at half-time thanks to Kendra Ware’s amazing goalkeeping. Unfortunately, a goal conceded early in the second half made it difficult to regain momentum. Tahlia Louca, Azaan Singh and Adele Russell produced some great kicks out of the backline to forwards Chi Chi Zhao, Ashley Piper and Emily Downie. Our wingers, Anushka Rajbhoj and Annie Bradshaw, were attempting crosses when they had the chance and helping out in defence when needed. Sophie Barr did a great job tagging Walford’s strongest player and removing her from the contest. As always, Lucy Benn and Lysiane Franchi were excellent in the midfield, never failing to tackle and take players on. It was great to play at home this match and have Saints’ supporters on the sidelines cheering the team on. I am a very proud of how far this team has come over the shortened season and I wish them all the best next year! – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Scotch 4
For our final game of the season against Scotch, who were top of the table, it may have been a 0 – 4 loss, but that was all in the first half where we started slow and let in a few cheap goals. However, the second half was a complete turnaround, and the girls fought and defended hard to make it a more respectable game. As it was the last Saints’ game for some players, they made the most of it, playing with spirit until the final whistle and keeping Scotch scoreless in the second half. We did have a chance ourselves to score, but unfortunately didn’t convert.

It’s been a pleasure coaching these girls this season given all that’s been going on; their commitment, team spirit, determination and achieving their team goal of winning a game means a lot to the girls and me. They have shown their full capabilities and skills that have developed greatly, as shown in their game play both individually and as a team. I much appreciate the girls showing up to games and training in rain, hail or shine and giving it their all. Best wishes to all the players in their next phase of life, and keep pursuing soccer as it’s an amazing game. – TJ Scarsgill (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 0 drew with Walford 0
The girls came out strongly and toughed it out in what was a highly competitive affair against Walford at Intercol in which we were unlucky not to come away with the win.

We had the better of the opening half, with our midfielders Georgia, Jess and Mary battling hard for control and succeeding. Our defenders Annie and Grace B did very well in getting to the ball first to limit the opposition’s attacks, while Ruby and Ariel put in some great tackles. Januri was excellent up front, beating her defenders, and was unlucky not to score with her strikes coming so close but only just wide. The second half continued in much the same fashion as the first with Saints dominating most of the play. Lilly and Chloe made some great runs down the wing while Jas never stopped chasing, putting Walford under pressure. I was pleased to see Tamsin and Levanya playing well in a variety of positions throughout the match. Unfortunately, we couldn’t hit the back of the net, and some heroic goalkeeping in the final moments by Grace S ensured we ended the match with a nil-all draw.

I have had an enjoyable time coaching this season; it was fantastic to see every player come out with a positive attitude to improve their skills. The girls showed great resilience all season and they should be extremely proud of their efforts and improvements each game. Well done on a great season girls! – Ange Gouvielos (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 1 defeated by Walford 3

A Message From Selwyn’s House Captain

W7 - Prefect Article

The long-awaited Sports Day 2020 brought the four Houses together for some friendly competition, fitness and fun! The annual House Scramble at the start of the day was a great opportunity for students to gain House points. The catch? The 300m distance has to be finished in 70 seconds. This challenge starts the excitement for the rest of the day. From the Egg and Spoon novelty race to the 100m, from Shot Put to High Jump, all girls are encouraged to get involved and help their House achieve the best result. Sports Day is not only about celebrating skill and success. House spirit and sportsmanship also go hand-in-hand, with the Spirit Cup awarded to the House with the most energy – and loud voices! The girls brought all their energy and loudest cheers for their House chants! The Year 12s dazzled in their costumes. You couldn’t miss them!

The girls remembered to support each other, showcased their House spirit and had fun! It was a great day!

Our ELC to Reception Transition Process

Kate-ProfileOver the past seven weeks, there has been a continual conversation starter from many of the School staff: “The Mid-Years are a great group”, or, “The Mid-Years have settled in quickly”. I reflected on this and decided to ask my ELC colleague Kirsty Porplycia and Mid-Year Reception teacher Zoe West their perspectives. What are those key ingredients that have created such a smooth transition and how has this enabled the girls to merge straight into their Term 3 learning in Reception, following their ELC experience?

Zoe believes the Transition Visits are pivotal. She says her three mornings with the girls, plus the outstanding handover with the ELC teachers, has enabled her to build a strong connection and understanding about the group and their learning. The firm friendships that were established amongst these girls gave them confidence as a group to make this transition together.

Kirsty supports this by stating that the partnership with the ELC and Reception teachers is fundamental, not only for the handover process, but as an ongoing relationship between the girls and the ELC. Kirsty and Zoe have reimagined their buddy class, connecting the students in areas of their inquiry, as well as adding value to other areas of the existing curriculum.

Emphasis in the ELC this year has been placed on Mathematics and how we can build connections of understanding through utilising Lisa-Jane O’Connor, Mathematics Consultant in the ELC and Junior School. We were curious to see if Zoe noticed any of these skills in the classroom setting. She has been very impressed with the girls’ ability to use the mathematical language and reasoning to build that solid foundation at Reception level. This is an area that will continue to grow as our work in Mathematics deepens. This strong connection of learning has also occurred with the delivery of basic THRASS (Teaching Handwriting, Reading And Spelling Skills), and as the girls have entered school, they have already become familiar with the THRASS Chart.

As teachers, we become strong advocates for the child and feel a sense of responsibility to ensure that we work in partnership with the School, where information is provided to support a seamless transition. Kirsty points out that this is not only important for the child, but also for the family.

We continue to be proud of our process of transition, especially when we hear such amazing feedback about the next phase, and this process will continue to grow as we critically reflect on each layer to ensure our practice is forever evolving. Our Mid-Year group of students are wearing their biggest smiles as they are so proud to be Saints Girls together.

Esperanza Hits National Stage

W7 - Esperanza

Musicians all over the world have had to adapt to new ways of performing and this has seen the rise of online music competitions, live-streamed concerts and virtual concert halls. This year, Enchante led the way and was accepted on an international platform via a virtual concert hall administrated in America. Esperanza, our small vocal group, soon followed by entering the Musica Viva ‘Strike a Chord’ online competition. This is a national contest for elite-level chamber musicians.

We are happy to announce that from over 150 applicants from all around the country, Esperanza has been named in the top 12. The Grand Final on Saturday 12 September will be live-streamed nationally from the beautiful Ukaria concert hall in Mount Barker.

More details to come, but we hope you can join us and vote for Esperanza in the audience award category.

High Note at Recitals Australia

W7 - Recital

On Tuesday, some of our talented musicians were invited to perform at a Recitals Australia lunchtime concert. This event was live-streamed to a national audience and recorded by 5MBS for radio.

The recital was highly varied, featuring string, piano and flute performances by musicians across Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. Samantha Li (Year 5) played solos on both piano and violin, as well as performing with the Extension Strings Ensemble which delivered a contemporary piece by Adelaide-based cellist and composer Hilary Kleinig. Memorable Chapters from Book Week

W7 - Book Week

As part of Book Week, students in Years 7 and 8 were fortunate to listen to Old Scholar Elizabeth Stevens, a prolific writer who shared her journey as a self-publishing author. From a childhood filled with books and her earliest writing efforts as a five year old, she is now a renowned author of Young Adult (YA) and Adult fiction with growing popularity in the American market.

Our Year 9 girls were visited by Poppy Nwosu, a relatively new author of YA Rom Coms (Romantic Comedies) who now lives in Adelaide. She shared her inspirations and highlighted the value of perseverance, which has led her to publish two of her many books.

During the Book Week Assembly, the Student Library Initiatives Club presented a memorable performance of a selection of nominated Book of the Year titles. From Billy, who became a dog, to the animals stuck in an elevator, and Louis, who told us how fragile our marine life is due to careless humans, the audience was captivated. Hosted by Sophie Kamenair and Keely Flannagan, the Arts Centre was filled with ‘Curious Creatures and Wild Minds’, as the teachers performed ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ and each Junior School class paraded on stage in an array of amazing costumes.

Stage 2 Nutrition Food for Thought

W7 - Nutrition

Last week, the Stage 2 Nutrition class visited Brookman’s Food Forest as an introduction to their final topic on sustainable food supply. The Food Forest is a local organic farm that produces over 160 varieties of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. They are is also involved in educating the community about the importance of using sustainable farming techniques.

During this excursion, the students were introduced to a variety of organic farming methods such as intercropping, crop rotation, mixed farming and using recycled water and fertilisers. All of these topics will be explored further in class to explore the possible options humans have to establish a sustainable food supply for our growing population, which is projected to reach 11.2 billion by the year 2100.

IB Students Realise Fundraising Vision

W7 - IB CAS

On Wednesday, the Year 12 IB CAS class ran a stall raising funds for the Royal Society for the Blind (RSB). This non-profit organisation aims to train guide dogs for vision impaired people, so as a class, we decided to fundraise for this charity for our final CAS activity.

At lunchtime, the CAS girls sold adorable merchandise and were lucky enough to have four dogs – Bill, Xena, Zali and Ziggy – come out to have a cuddle with the girls. The efforts of the School helped the CAS girls raise over $600 for the RSB.

International Students Strike Up a Friendship

W7 - Bowling 2

Last weekend, the international students from Saints Girls and St Peter’s College bowled it out at Kingpin Bowling in Norwood. Although I did not hit a single bowling pin, I was amazed to see many girls bowl strike after strike!

The bowling was followed by a delicious treat of hotdogs, fries and iced tea. Our last activity was laser tag – many found this the most enjoyable experience as it felt like ‘The Hunger Games’.

The excursion was a great chance to make new friendships and polish up on our bowling skills!

Wise Words from Year 7 Poets

W7 - English

Last week, Miss Moxon’s Year 7 English class took their poetry to the next level by showcasing their talents in an exhibition. Francine Stavrou and Lilly Michelon coordinated the event, confidently demonstrating excellent leadership skills and attention to detail. The girls organised the location of each piece and arranged placards for every student.

Students voted on a range of awards including best sonnet, best theme or concept and most creative poem. Mabel Cook’s collection, which explored recent protests around the world, won best overall collection; her piece was both thoughtful and sophisticated. The poetry collections themes explored ideas such as friendship, loss, love and inspirational women.

The girls put in an extraordinary effort and did a fantastic job of taking the task and transforming it into something that was entirely their own. Watch out for these budding young artists!

As a School, we must set an example for our students in showing courtesy to all; in this case, other road users.

Thank you for your cooperation.

AUSSIE RULES

Open – Saints 3.1 – 19 defeated Concordia 2.6 – 18
With their first win of the season, the girls played the best game yet. They were fast, smart and moved the ball very well down the field. They communicated and collaborated effectively and the score is a reflection of the hard work they have putting into trainings. Special mention must go to Lucy who was an exceptional ruck who never stopped fighting for the ball. So proud of all of the girls for their hard work and can’t wait to play the last few games with them as a team. – Bella Bernardi (Captain)

Middle – Saints 4.4 – 28 defeated Concordia 3.1 – 19
The girls were challenged again in a tight game. The opposition kicked the first 2 goals and we were on the back foot, but Annie Warwick was swung to half-back and controlled any balls that came into her area from then on. The midfield through Ellie Humphrey and Lilly Maerschel began to take the ball into space, supporting Jasmine Segredos and Charlotte McAuliffe. Ruby Richards and Pearl Richards finished off the good work up the field with 3 goals to Pearl and 1 to Ruby. Great improvements shown by Sophie Edwardes, Naomi Singh, Marcella Tolley and Amy Dillon. – Dan Searle (Coordinator)

Congratulations to all the girls who played on Saturday morning. Our As, Bs, Cs Ds and E2s all secured wins again our opponents. BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 7 defeated by Pembroke 47
Another tough game for the girls. We have a lot of players new to basketball and although the scores aren’t showing it, these girls are working incredibly hard and improving their skills every game. Big thank you to Amy and Iris in Year 5, who stepped in to give us some numbers. A fantastic effort from all the girls! – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

HOCKEY

Open – Saints 5 defeated Wilderness 0
The girls faced a more challenging opposition which was good practice for our attacking five positions to move the ball around defenders more efficiently. It was terrific to see the team show great sportsmanship and go a player down during the first quarter because Wildy were short a player. After the score being equal at quarter-time, the strikers came out firing in the second, scoring 2 goals. Holly Cardone, Amelie Eaton and Amelia Lucas made seamless connections down the right side, often resulting in a short corner or goal. Special mention goes to Georgina Keough who took one for the team and padded up to play an awesome game in goals. Well done to Poppie Goldsmith who scored 3 goals and Belle Black and Chloe Cardone who scored a goal each. – Olivia Goldsmith (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 15 defeated Wilderness 4
The girls played another strong game. From the first whistle, they hustled hard for every loose ball. The girls in attack played a great team game with many shots scored from cutting in front of goal. The defence were particularly strong, shutting down any fast breaks Wilderness had. Special mention to goalie Emily Bates who made many awesome saves, only letting 3 in. Cleo Hart as Captain played a top game, working hard in the midfield and shooting many goals. It was a great effort from the girls all over the field. – Millie Wilkin (Lacrosse Captain)

Under 11 – Saints Blue 7 defeated East Torrens / Payneham 3
This game was a challenge, yet was so rewarding. All team members gained motivation and determination as the game progressed, and the teamwork demonstrated was exceptional. They used the space well and drove fast towards goal when given the opportunity. Improvements include the use of their voices, making leads, tight defence, and goal backup. Awesome work from our goalies, Valencia Capobianco and Chelsea Francis, who held up the team’s defensive line, making numerous saves. Our goal scorers were Millie Lively (3), Chelsea Francis (2), Hayley Lucas (1) and Matilda Purvis (1). Once again, a great game demonstrating how far we have come this season. Well done Saints Blue! – Sophie Auricht (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints White 11 defeated St Aloysius 8
It was a lovely, sunny day to be playing lacrosse. In our attack, it was great to see Lois Burton-Howard (Year 4) and Ruby Kelly (Year 4) get the ball and dodge around players to score goals. At the start, the girls were told to never give up when going for ground balls, which Anvika Singh (Year 4) and Mathilda Begg (Year 4) displayed so well. At half-time, the girls needed to work on keeping their stick up in defence to intercept, which Lilly Silvani did a great job at. Our defence was also quite good, with girls like Neela (Year 4) and Scarlett Schinella (Year 3) sticking to their players closely. Goalies for the match were Willow Chong (Year 3) and Grace Marshall (Year 3) who saved a number of goals with their body. Goal scorers were Lois (2), Ruby (2), Grace (2) and Lily (5). It was a great game where the girls listened to what they needed to work on and then performed it on the field.  Lucy Martin (Coach)

NETBALL

Open A – Saints 24 defeated by Seymour 43
In the first half, the scores were level. The girls showed great intensity through their drives down the court and defence against their opponents. We collaborated and communicated as a team, enabling for connections to be made down the court from defence line throw ins. Best players were Olivia Kelly and Anna White. Olivia showed strong determination for the ball, resulting in many touches and intercepts, as well as great leadership and encouragement throughout. Anna’s movement in and out of the goal circle was excellent, setting up on her player, enabling for Alexia Politis, Amelia Pudney and Maggie Bailey to pass to Anna efficiently. It was an unfortunate loss, however, I am still so proud of the girls’ efforts. Keep up the good work. – Hannah Freeman (Captain)

Open B – Saints 39 defeated Seymour 34
The Open Bs had a well-deserved win against Seymour. We were ahead at each quarter, but our increased intensity in the second, securing a greater lead and our position for the rest of the game. Our shooters Tahlia Cahill, Dayna Petruzzella, and Joss Forster worked well together in the circle with Joss the standout. All the girls worked as a team, with the mid-court maintaining drive and our defence sustaining pressure. It was excellent to have another win! – Gemma Schaedel

Open E1 – Saints 32 defeated Pulteney 17
The girls played another solid game, taking out the win once again. Kate Reade was the best player, making a number of turnovers and really standing out in the defensive half. Well done girls, looking forward to hopefully another couple of wins in the coming weeks to finish off your school netball! Well done again! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Open E2 – Saints 1 defeated by Immanuel 44
Despite the result, the girls pushed through the game with high spirits and made the best of a tough situation, enjoying one of their last games of school netball. They kept up their competitiveness and took the opportunity to try out different positions, but unfortunately, Immanuel were just too strong. Best players were Lucy White and Fiona Lethbridge for their encouragement and energy throughout. Great work girls! – Emma Mockridge (Coach)

Year 10A – Saints 42 defeated Seymour 38
Really good effort by both As and Bs. It was great to see the introduction of Willow Stewart-Rattray into the 10A side; she demonstrated leadership and voice on the court and worked well with Martha in circle defence. All of the girls adjusted really well and the overall voice and transition of the court was amazing – so impressed! Every single girl in the As stepped up their performance. So much improvement within the squad; the best game they have played so far!  Milli Gentle (Coach)

Year 10B – Saints 18 defeated by Seymour 41
Bs also played a strong game. Annie came off in the second quarter after sustaining a knee to the chest, and Letitia stepped up in playing GA to facilitate movement. Overall movement down the court has improved, and all players are starting to understand transition and how to use their preliminary movements to get rid of defenders in transition. Sophie had a wonderful game and has started to develop in GK exceptionally well! – Katie Dancer (Coach)

Year 10C – Saints 21 defeated by Pembroke 52
Despite taking the loss again, the girls played their best game so far this season, putting 21 goals on the board. It was fantastic to see them building connections on court that we’ve been working on, allowing us to turn over plenty of ball and convert into goals. Great game team! – Elena Vaananen (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 42 defeated by Seymour 50
We created enough turnovers in our defensive end but couldn’t score off them or our centre pass. We were in it for most of the game but were outperformed in the third quarter. – Della Griffith (Coach)

Year 9B – Saints 32 defeated Seymour 22
It was a very good game by all the girls. It was great to see how well Emma Pool fit in with the team and was able to pick up on our set plays. The girls have been working on their centre passes and it was excellent to see these being used effectively. – Natasha Dinan (Coach)

Year 9C – Saints 29 defeated by Concordia 37
Despite the loss, the team played an inspiring game. The middle two quarters were flawless, with an 11-goal catch up in the second quarter. Best players were Kimmy Psaromatis and Lucy Schirripa for their outstanding defence skills and intercepts. A great effort by all. – Lulu Tierney (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 46 defeated Seymour 45
The girls played an amazing game and all put 100% effort in. It was a tight match but we continually drove for the ball and never gave up. Sophie Ricciuto and Charlie Piper worked great together in goals, with help from Mathilda Thomas in centre. Jasmine Segredos played a top game, filling in from the Bs. – Sophie Edwards

Year 8B – Saints 36 defeated Seymour 21
The girls played an exceptional game against Seymour. The sun was shining and so were our spirits. We were pumped up from the beginning and this showed in the way we played. Our defence was amazing, with Olivia Oakes, Charlotte Norman and Ruby Adams all getting rebounds and stopping goals. Our mid-courters did a fine job of bringing the ball down to our attackers with speed and agility. Our shooters, Alice Braithwaite, Jasmine Segredos and Ayla Blaskett, were on fire, getting goal after goal, and when they didn’t, they jumped for rebounds. A mention must go to our players of the match, Alice and Jasmine who both had a cracking game. Thanks to Ayanna Roy for playing with us. – Ayla Blaskett

Year 8C – Saints 39 defeated Wilderness 6
It was a great game for Saints. The girls applied tight defensive pressure from the start, which resulted in many turnovers and a strong lead of 13-0 at the end of the first quarter. The girls maintained the pressure in defence throughout, whilst in attack, they led well, positioning themselves in front of the Wilderness defenders, allowing easy movement of the ball down the court. Best players were Dani Vari and Maddy Penley. Dani’s strong defence of the opposition’s goal circle made it difficult for them to get the ball into the ring which reduced their opportunities to shoot for goal. Maddy Penley also played with solid defensive pressure and made good attacking leads which facilitated the easy movement of the ball towards our goal. In her quarter as GA, Maddy’s movement allowed for easy passes into the goal circle, often finishing off with a quick goal. Well done girls! – Nikki Miller (Coach)

Year 8D – Saints 1 defeated by Immanuel 35
The girls got off to a slow start and allowed Immanuel to get a big break. Afterwards, they increased their defensive pressure throughout and continuously lowered Immanuel’s score each quarter. Their display of resilience and a ‘keep trying’ attitude was evident irrespective of the large score gap. There were several great intercepts but we just couldn’t quite get the ball into our goal circle. – Gina Barker (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 15 defeated by Seymour 34
The girls were quite downhearted in the first half as it didn’t go as well as we hoped. But in the third quarter, all the girls lifted their spirts and that was the best quarter of the game. Anna Venning and Annabel Keough did really well in mid-court, managing to get the ball all the way down the court. The stand out player was Carys Kinsella-White, who was amazing with her shooting and only missed one or two goals! It was a pretty hard game but the girls carried through. Next time, we’re going to keep our positive mindsets the whole game and be ready to win! – Asha Eaton

Year 7B – Saints 4 defeated by Seymour 48
This game was very tough, but we all gave it our best shot. Although we did get the first goal of the game, we were down by quite a lot at half-time. We decided to focus on our passing, defensive and shooting skills. We shot only 4 goals but that is quite an accomplishment considering how strongly Seymour played. By the final quarter, we all fired up to try our absolute best to raise the score. We intercepted many balls, but unfortunately, the final score didn’t match our effort. Great game girls. Let’s train hard to ensure that we get a win next time!  Matilda Powell

Year 4 Blue – Saints 9 defeated by Pembroke Green 11
Saints Girls played an awesome, competitive game. Making space, give and go, strong defence, accurate shooting. We outscored Pembroke 4 – 2 in the last quarter. The girls never gave up, working hard together as a team.  Karen Braund (Proud Coach)

Year 3 – Saints 9 defeated Pembroke Yellow 2
To ensure a fair distribution of positions throughout the season, many of our girls played in positions that were not their preferred this game. With that said, there were no complaints but rather enthusiasm to just be playing, and it translated into another solid performance. Our defensive game was very strong with many taps which were followed up with a chase to ensure the turnover was favourable. Bonnie Qu put on another display of tight, relentless defence. A big game for us next match; let’s bring it home again. – Rebecca Scott-Toms (Coach)

SOCCER

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Immanuel 1
What an exciting game to play! The Open A team versed Immanuel in a fast-paced, competitive match that unfortunately resulted in a 0 – 1 loss. I think Dion, our Coach, would agree that it was one of the best games this season and the girls should be extremely proud of their efforts. All had composure on the ball, were delivering through-balls into space and beating players in one-on-ones, which are all the skills we’ve been developing these past few weeks. Sophie Barr and Ashley Piper made some great runs up forward. In the midfield, Lysiane Franchi and Annie Bradshaw fought tirelessly to win the ball, along with Lucy Benn, who had some powerful shots on goal from outside the goalie box. Our defence, plus Kendra Ware in goals, were relentless and prevented countless shots. Adele Russell, Tahlia Louca and Azaan Singh all did a great job jockeying the Immanuel players and not letting them have a shot on goal. Looking forward to our Intercol match against Walford! – Ellie Anderson (Captain)

Open B – Saints 4 defeated Concordia 1
This match, the message for the players was to be defensive and then play on the break. It was a dominant start which soon led to a goal from Jodi Papendorf, a brilliant shot that zipped past the defenders and goalkeeper into the back of the net. Jodi’s first goal too! Not long after, there was a scramble in our attacking half in the box, where Imogen Parkinson managed to get the ball, dribble through the defence and shoot to make it 2 – 0 Saints. Towards the end of the first half, Concordia managed to get a goal from a corner, and with the pressure on, the girls knew they needed to defend hard to hold on until half-time so we could regroup. In the second half, the girls came out strongly and scored from a long footy kick by our keeper Stella Clark, which allowed Imogen to run through the defence and shoot it to score again. Shortly after, there was a scramble where Jessica Zhang (from the Middle As) and Zihan Huang won the ball which it made its way to Imogen who was rewarded with a hat-trick. This game highlighted the true spirit and fight that the girls have. They were strong on all areas of the pitch, dominating the opposition and knowing the importance of what the win would mean to them. The girls achieved the team’s goal which was to win at least one game this season and it was well deserved. But, let’s not stop here and go for the win in the next match which is our last game of the season so let’s finish on a high. – TJ Scarsgill (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 4 defeated Pembroke 1
We started well but could not capitalise on our chances in the first half. Our defenders Jasreet Mavi, Grace Beaumont, Ruby Kirwan and Ariel Spartalis put in a solid effort to ensure the score was deadlocked 0 – 0 at half-time. In the second half, we conceded a scrappy goal from a free kick, but I was proud in the way we kept our heads up and came back strongly. Maddie Harrex was excellent down the wing, with her creativity and assists resulting in goals for Grace Stevens (1) Georgia Evans (1) and Januri Wagaarachchi (2). Thanks to Mary Stavrou and Levanya De Silva for volunteering to play in goal this match. Well done girls! It was a fantastic win; let’s keep this momentum going for a big last game of the season at Intercol. – Ange Gouvielos (Coach)

Year 6 – Saints 2 defeated Pembroke Blue 0
The team played a very competitive game against Pembroke, resulting in a 2 – 0 win! Both of our goals were scored by Alyssa Piantedosi, who never fails to put 100% effort into each game and score some impressive goals. Eliza Brill-Reed and Alison Francis helped in the midfield, along with Lucy Lowry who displayed some exceptional dribbling skills. Our defence was very strong, particularly Grace Brockhouse and Stella Spalvins applying strong tackles. Meghana Chettimada and Ruby Clark both kicked some powerful long balls down the field out of defence. I was very impressed by the determination and willingness of our two goalies, Georgia Libri and Lucy Shigeno, who let no goals through. Great game girls! – Ellie Anderson and Mary Stavrou (Coaches)

Year 5 – Saints 7 defeated Pembroke 1
The team put in another very solid game to bring home the win against Pembroke. Once again, admirable defensive efforts were made by the entire team and the girls showed a clear improvement in backing each other up. The midfield, led by Aleesha Gray, dominated the play, making consistent attempts to win back the ball whenever it was lost. It’s incredibly encouraging to see this highly-determined team improve and begin to achieve results for the energy and work they’ve put into this season so far. Thank you to goalkeepers Cleo Connor and Lily Forby, and great effort to goal scorers Izzy Huf and Aleesha Gray. – Beth Cross (Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints 4 defeated Walford 0
The sweet smell of spring danced on the autumn winds. The day seemed brighter, the sky seemed to be bluer and the soccer skills seemed even fancier. Beatrice Tolley scored 2 quick goals to get us off to a great start in the first half. Valentina Patino continued her scintillating run of great form, her confidence sky-high. Sophie Wiggins was relieved to be playing up forward this match and enjoyed the freedom or this position. Mika Valmorbida in defence played her best game attacking the ball and demonstrated real grit and perseverance in her best game so far this season. Lauren Disney executed the best run-down, goal-saving tackle for the season and had all the parents and interchange players clapping and cheering in support. She scored 2 more goals to add to her impressive total for season 2020. Mathilda Begg relished her first try as goalkeeper this season, providing another option for the final two games this year. – Mark Routley (Coach)
