Enews – Week 10, Term 3 2018

Issue no. 30Enews-banner

From the Principal

JuliaShea_web-200x300At Presentation Night last year, I spoke about the power of conversation – conversations in which you’re engaged, conversations by which you’ve been inspired, conversations where you’ve made a real connection. It’s about being truly present in the moment, revelling in the spontaneity and unscripted interactions. I urged the girls to explore a world in which there are no first drafts, no consulting friends about what you should text, no debating over which emoji perfectly resonates with the point you are trying to make. Just unique – not copied and pasted – unfiltered and honest conversation. And on Sunday, it was evident yet again that food is so important in our social landscape. When united through the power of a meal, the conversation which we crave occurs so naturally. The Long Lunch was a huge success. Great food, great wine and yes, great conversation. It’s a reminder to us all as we slow down and draw breath after another busy term, to find time for a regular family meal in a ‘device free’ environment. Because it’s only through a face-to-face conversation that we authentically connect.

Five builders were invited to tender for Project 6 of our Master Plan, the brand new Science Centre and upgrades to the pool and Art facilities. At the Board meeting on Wednesday evening, Sarah Constructions was nominated as the preferred contractor. The pre-works package will be completed over the holiday period and the builders will be on site from the start of next term.

Given the proximity of the building site to the car park, there will be changes to traffic flow throughout the construction period. The normal entry through the eastern gate on Stonyfell Road will be closed. Entry to and exit from the car park will be through the gate closest to Hallett Road. In order to keep traffic moving, cars will only be able to enter and exit the car park by making a left-hand turn. Cars heading east up Stonyfell Road will need to proceed to the roundabout on the corner of Simpson Road and turn around, allowing them to make a left-hand turn into the car park. Cars exiting must turn left and head towards Hallett Road. Traffic within the car park will flow in a single, one-way loop from the north side to the south side. In the interests of relieving congestion, it would be advisable for parents collecting Middle and Senior School students to meet their daughter/s in the surrounding streets.

With safety a key concern during this phase, please remain alert and vigilant at all times given the high volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. We anticipate that the building will be completed by the start of Term 4, 2019. I thank you in advance for your patience over the coming 12 months and have no doubt that this minor inconvenience will be quickly forgotten once the amazing new facilities come to life.

Our move to continuous reporting across Years 7 – 12 continues to gain momentum. Currently, we produce detailed semester reports satisfying the mandated government requirement that all schools produce two summative written reports per year. This method of reporting often gives quite generic feedback and usually comes at a time when it’s too late for a student to improve. A continuous report is one that is built throughout the semester which provides students and parents with an ongoing overview of how they’re progressing. It can be accessed online anywhere at any time and is vastly more informative than the restrictive summary comments usually offered in a semester report. We are running in-house trials of the new system and look forward to launching it later this year.

In staffing news, Anne Charlesworth will be on long service leave in Term 4. We welcome Emma Smerdon back from maternity leave to cover Anne’s classes.

Best wishes for a safe and relaxing holiday. I look forward to welcoming the girls back to School on Monday 15 October.

Top Debaters Have Final Word

W10 - Debating

On 22 September, the Year 10 Green debating team participated in the Grand Finals of the Debating SA Competition. The girls involved were Abbie Lisle, Faye Ma, Emily Loh, Charlotte Bleby and Ellen Zhang. With a unanimous vote their way, the girls were crowned State winners. Considering that they had been on Year 10 camp the week of the debate, the result was certainly impressive! This year, they have consistently impressed adjudicators and audiences alike with their confident manner of presentation and well-thought-out arguments. Well done girls, we are all so proud of you!

A special congratulations to Ellen Zhang, who has been announced as the Year 10 Debater of the Year based on scores and rankings for each division.

Year 9 Camp Highlights

W10 - Year 9 Camp

Year 9 camp consisted of a two-night bushwalk through the stunning landscape of Deep Creek Conservation Park, a kayak around Hindmarsh Island and into the Coorong, as well as some rock climbing and a high-ropes course at Woodhouse scout camp. The overnight kayak leg also included a solo night in individual tents as part of the Rite Journey program.

“Throughout the week we went through a series of physical and mental challenges. As a class, we took on bushwalking, kayaking, high ropes, abseiling and rock climbing. These experiences made us so much closer as a Home Group as we spent the whole week together, working through the challenges we were faced with.” – Thuhansa Hattotuwa

“Our Home Group really bonded together; we were always supportive, we were all grateful, and according to our instructor, we all built resilience along the way, stepped out of our comfort zone and there were always ‘positive sparks’ through tough situations which pushed the group forward. The Year 9 camp was definitely a memorable and unforgettable experience.” – Candy Feng

“All the girls were encouraging each other throughout the hike and singing many songs to help us climb up the steep hills. We were required to carry our gear which was packed into a rucksack. Each night, we had to cook dinner on a trangia, which was a new experience for many.” – Ella Waltham

“This camp challenged me to push myself and do things I have never done before. For me, the bushwalk was the most challenging part as I have never done a walk so long with all my stuff on my back – I’ve only ever done the small hikes in Years 7 and 8. It pushed me as I didn’t think I would be able to climb up many of the rocky cliffs/hills. The encouragement from everyone made the walk so much better and I’ve come out with some of the funniest parts of the camp from the most challenging aspect. ” – Louisa Reid

“The camp was a memorable experience as we learnt a variety of skills useful in the outdoor environment. This included a solo camping night, where we spent a night alone away from others, cooking dinner in the pouring rain, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing and abseiling, all of which were extremely enjoyable and challenging.” – Amelia Pudney

“During our final days, all of the classes came together at Woodhouse to face our fears. We spent this time rock climbing, scaling the high ropes and abseiling. Although this camp was very wet and cold, it made our class a family and pushed me out of my comfort zone.” – Saskia Jonats

Here’s a snippet from their journey together:

Year 10 Camp Adventures

W10 - Year 10 Camp

Year 10 Camp occurs in the beauty of the Southern Flinders Ranges at a private property called Argadells Station. The girls camp at different sites around the station and their activities include a bushwalk to Mount Arden, mountain biking, rock climbing and abseiling.

“We were all a little apprehensive at the bus on the morning of camp because of the challenges we faced on Year 9 Camp. We headed off for the Flinders Ranges and whilst there, completed many difficult activities but we enjoyed them immensely. These included mountain biking, abseiling, rock climbing, cooking on trangias, climbing Mount Arden and a survival challenge. Rock climbing and abseiling on real rock was a first for many of us and we all gave it a good go. We persisted on the hike up Mount Arden and, after two and a half hours, reached the top to witness some inspiring views. The independence we gained throughout the week, along with the friendships and memories, are what we will take away from this camp.”

High-Flying Guest Speaker for Year 6

W10 - Year 6

“Never be afraid to be the only girl in the room” – Marija Jovanovich

On Tuesday 18 September, the Year 6 group met with Wing Commander Marija Jovanovich, test pilot and Chief of Operations at No. 92 Wing. Whilst sharing her story, Marija highlighted four key beliefs when discussing how to be a positive leader. These included the idea that the leadership and followership go together, that leadership is about taking care of others, the importance of taking a step back and knowing how to get the best from a team. Throughout her story, she highlighted the importance of being yourself, learning from others and taking responsibility for your own story. It was great to hear about the first time she was given the opportunity to fly solo and how “awesome yet scary” this was.

Marija outlined what she thought had been the ingredients for success in her world. This included having an inquisitive mind, some technical capabilities, an adventurous spirit, a good sense of humour and knowing the value of education whilst holding on to one’s ability to dream. She acknowledged that she had faced failures many times but recognised the importance of this in any situation for development.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to hear Marija’s stories from when she first flew solo, the time she had with the elite US Air Force Test Pilot School and going on interesting (and dangerous) missions around the world. What really stood out to the group was how passionate, enthusiastic and proud she was, whilst being humble and considerate of others. We would like to thank Marija for giving up some of her time to share her story with us.

Chess Club – Checking in with Mates

W10 - Chess

This year, the Chess Club has welcomed many new members across the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools, and entered a team in the Secondary Division 2 in the South Australian Junior Chess League Interschool Competitions. We always welcome new members to join the lunchtime coaching sessions regardless of skill level. While the junior girls enjoyed refining their moves, the interschool participants played against each other to further advance in skill.

Overall, we have played 12 rounds of matches against different schools across the State and the girls have made great improvements. The interschool chess girls finished the season on a strong note, winning both of our matches in the last two rounds and only losing the play-off for National Championships to Wilderness School by half a point. Congratulations to our interschool chess players on finishing off the season well.

Finally, a big thank you to Mrs O’Brien and our wonderful coach George for their ongoing support of Chess Club and faith in the interschool team during the season. It is my honour to be the Chess Captain this year and I wish Rachel Banham all the best in leading the club next year.

Year 8 Tech Excursion – What a Ride!

W10 - Year 8

Last Friday, 8AST went to Flinders at Tonsley to look at and experience some autonomous technology. We rode in a driverless bus and saw many prototypes for water-based autonomous technology. We also saw an underwater ROV similar to the one some of our students designed earlier this year for the SUBS in Schools challenge.

Some of us went to the programming lab to code a robot to save people from a disaster, and the rest of us rode in a driverless car around the campus. We then visited an engineering lab to see how robots are programmed to perform specialised jobs. It was a really fun experience that we all benefitted from, which has inspired many of us to think about taking up engineering in the future.

Year 7 Co-Ed Day

W10 - Year 7

On Tuesday, Year 7s from Saints Girls travelled to St Peter’s College where we met the Year 7 boys, as well as girls from Walford. We were split into groups of about 24 people and rotated through various activities during the day. We did frisbee, a getting to know each other activity, kahoot quiz, ball tag game and more. These activities helped us with communication and learning how to make new friends. The day went really well and we all got to know boys and girls from different schools.

The Long Lunch – Thank You

W10 - Long Lunch

The Foundation Long Lunch last Sunday 23 September was a huge success thanks to our amazing St Peter’s Girls’ community members.

This year, to support our new Science Centre, we raised close to $80,000. Our Science project will cement Saints Girls as a national leader in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), allowing our students to experiment, explore and excel.

We are very enthusiastic in taking up this challenge and our hope is that you will continue to travel with us on this journey.

HOCKEY

Year 5/6 Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke 7
Saints played Pembroke very well but sadly it was their first loss of the season. Mathilda Thomas played an amazing tackle to help us get the ball; Freya Hermann and Francine Stavrou worked hard in the circle to help stop the ball; Winnie Vartuli and Ruby Powell manned up on their opponents very well.

NETBALL

Year 6/7 Knockout
On Thursday 27 September, our Year 6/7 Knockout Netball team played in the School Sport SA finals day at Priceline Stadium. We were in a pool with three other schools (St Mary’s College, Tatachilla Lutheran College and Scotch College).

We had a thrilling 1 goal win over St Mary’s in Round 1, but then unfortunately went down to Tatachilla in Round 2 (14-19). In Round 3, we took on Scotch College needing a win to finish second to play-off in the Gold medal match. The girls fought valiantly throughout the game. We were up by 3 at half-time, but Scotch finished strongly and we went down by 3.

We finished third after the minor rounds and were scheduled to take on Tatachilla Lutheran in the play-off for third and fourth. The girls saved one of their best games for last! The team defence was outstanding as was the patience and work rate we showed in attack. The girls stuck to our game plan and we won the match convincingly 35-19.

The girls should be very proud of the way they played throughout the knockout rounds as well as the State finals day. Finishing third overall was an outstanding effort and a great way for this talented, hard-working group to finish off the tournament. – Alice Johnswood

ROWING

Saints Girls Rowing is looking for girls in Years 9 and 10 to help fill our crews. You don’t need to have any experience in rowing – all of our great coaches will help with that. So, if you would love to take part in a sport that involves teamwork and getting both physically and mentally strong, please give rowing a go. ELC Showcases Robot Ada to South Korea

There was a buzz of excitement this week as a South Korean media giant visited our ELC to produce an article and video showcasing children interacting with our humanoid robot Ada. JoongAng Ilbo, a newspaper that operates in association with the New York Times, embarked on the story after approaching the company that owns the technology, SoftBank Robotics.

This unique opportunity was facilitated by the Association of Independent Schools of South Australia (AISSA), which shared the visit on its website and Twitter account. The children enjoyed doing their morning yoga with Ada, as well as coding her to say their names and using voice recognition to ask her to stand up.

“It is really awesome to be able to share with South Korea how we are finding humanity through technology while working alongside Ada,” Acting Director of Early Learning Kirsty Porplycia said.

Natalie Lockwood, one of the ELC educators who works closely with the Hallett Room children and Ada, says “Through using Ada, we’ve seen a lot of different aspects of learning such as empathy, collaboration and problem-solving, as well as valuable skills such as coding.”

The newspaper is producing a series of international stories on the latest developments in technology in education, and our ELC is expected to feature in print and online next month.

The robot technology has played an immense role in enriching our teaching and learning, and we are pleased to share our knowledge both locally and globally.

From the Head of Junior School

W9 - Concert 3

One of the things that is incredibly special about a St Peter’s Girls’ education is the breadth of experiences in which our students can be involved. There are seemingly endless opportunities for our students to live our School values of courage, creativity and compassion, and during the last two weeks of this term, we see them in large measure in the Junior School.

The Reception and Year 1 students are putting together the work they have done over the past two terms during their weekly dance lessons, in preparation for a showcase at the beginning of next term. Our Year 2, 3 and 4 students impressed us yesterday afternoon during a concert celebrating the progress they’ve made in music lessons this year. From students who have been learning an instrument for several years, to those who are embarking on their first instrumental experience, they delighted their audience with their skill and obvious enjoyment of working in their ensembles. A demonstration of our Year 6 students’ creativity is currently on show in the Junior School corridor with a fabulous exhibition of visual art works which were painted during investigations into Expressionism and Impressionism. To end the term, next week we will enjoy the much-awaited climax of the work our Year 5 students have been engaged in through their preparations for the Year 5 Production, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins JR. This has been a rich unit of work, both in the classroom and on the stage, and the quality of the near-final rehearsals belie the students’ ages. if you haven’t yet bought a ticket, you’d be wise to do that right now!

All of these endeavours have required the students to demonstrate a little, or perhaps a lot, of courage. They have needed to be compassionate towards each other and, most importantly, themselves as they’ve taken risks in expressing themselves creatively in new ways. I’m sure that they have grown from their involvement in these experiences, and we, as their supporters, will enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Tech Girls Triumph Yet Again

W9 - Tech

This year, four Year 9 teams and one Year 7 team entered the 2018 Search for the Next Tech Girl Superhero challenge, a youth STEM entrepreneurship opportunity for girls. They worked tirelessly with support from an Industry Mentor to design, develop and market an app that addresses a problem aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. ‘SHEROES’ were named State winners for their app, HerStory, in the Secondary division and ‘FLOW’ were crowned State champions in the Primary division with their app, Unite.

HerStory aims to educate and empower minority groups, as well as magnifying their voices across Australia and the world. The application has various features including articles about equality, quizzes and other dynamic content. Through the utilisation of these features, the app is highly accessible, making it ideal for a wide range of people who learn through the use of different techniques, creating a larger market. The speech-to-audio element of the app fundamentally shows what it is all about – available and accessible to everyone, giving any user the equal opportunity to enjoy HerStory.

W9 - Tech2Unite’s mission is to improve the lives of children with a disability, mental or learning difficulties through social connection and inclusion by providing a unique crowdsourced information resource. The idea is to provide a way for children to connect with each other and provide support through an anonymous moderated posting system, which allows them to ask and answer questions about the challenges they face everyday. The team will seek government and community sponsorship to fund the development, monitoring and marketing of the app, as well as providing opportunities to access professional care where required.

SHEROES also competed for the National Secondary title, receiving the National STEM Award. The girls will submit their app in the global Technovation Challenge later this year where they will have the chance to pitch their idea to a global audience.

Students Master Legal Challenge

W9 - Mooting

The Adelaide Law School hosted a mooting competition exclusively for high school Legal Studies students to learn more about the law, its application in practice and advocacy skills. It was judged by lawyers from national firm Piper Alderman and provided a taste of what can be experienced when studying law, as well as invaluable feedback on how to improve advocacy skills.

The competition involved arguing a case in contract law against other teams and writing submissions to the court on the case.

Our Year 11 Legal Studies students earned a spot in the Grand Final and, in a split decision, were awarded second place, winning $800.

Congratulations to our girls who now look forward to competing on the national stage in the Bond University High School Mooting Challenge next year.

From Ballet to Book Publisher

W9 - Book Launch

“A Year 6 student has written, illustrated and published a picture book based on the life of Anna Pavlova. The journey of writing this book in some ways mirrored the story of the ballerina, with the student demonstrating creativity, persistence and resilience through the authoring process.” – Helen Smith, Deputy Head of Junior School/PYP Coordinator

“This week, I launched Dancer which is a short picture book about Anna Pavlova, a Russian ballerina from the 1880s to the 1900s. I have written and illustrated this book myself and began the process near the end of 2017. My enjoyment of doing ballet and performing as well as writing was the inspiration for this project. A book I read about Anna Pavlova also played a big part. Dancer will be able to be borrowed from the Junior School Library soon.” – Zara Chessell (Year 6)

Last Chance For Tickets – Mary Poppins JR.

W9 - Year 5 Production PHOTO

“Childhood is a step in time, parenthood’s the same. Never miss a chance to get it right.”
“Who looks after the fathers when things go wrong?”
“When will you learn to look past what you see?”

These are but a few of the gems of wisdom from the Year 5 Production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins JR. I have always loved the movie since I was taken to see it as a little girl at the old My Fair Lady Theatre in the city with my nanna. I knew every song by heart. I loved Julie Andrews and I loved Dick Van Dyke, despite his terrible cockney accent!

As I grew up and had children of my own, the movie and subsequent musical took on a whole new meaning. I realised it was about “being there” for your children, capturing childhood as the precious and fleeting time that it is. It is about caring for people, seeing past exteriors and finding the good beneath. I must confess to sniffling as an adult watching George Banks finally take Michael kite flying.

Many believe this musical is about Mary Poppins but as the recent movie Saving Mr Banks asserted, it is about George – showing him how to enjoy and give his time to those he loves; finding what is really important in life.

With this in mind, I wanted to show the rigidity of Edwardian England by ensuring the Banks’ house is dull in colour and the Bank, likewise, is a dour place to be. The nursery, by contrast, is the place where Mary Poppins and the children spend much of their time and is one of joy and colour. The colour palette for much of the show is based on the colours of the Union Jack – royal blue, red and white.

I am very grateful for the support of my very talented colleague Sarah Mulraney for her joyful big dance choreography and Mark Wickett for his video projections which capture exactly all of my rambled ideas. The girls have worked closely with Tim de Jong and Sally Rounsevell in the Music Department and I thank them for their expertise. I am also very grateful for the support of the parent group and our Maintenance crew, who have rallied to sew, make and paint the costumes, set and props you will see on stage.

Lastly, I thank the girls. Without them and their passion and enthusiasm, we wouldn’t have a show. Please come join us for this wonderful production.

UN Women Fundraiser Concert Success

W9 - Concert 4

What started off as a small idea a couple of months ago, turned into an event that not only raised funds for UN Women Australia but also left the audience feeling inspired and empowered.

With the incredible support of the School community and Music Department, in particular Sari Noble, the vision of developing a concert that showcased an array of talent, ages and genres was brought to life. From Inta-jazz, to Girl Nation, the stage was lit up with life, strength and girl power, which left the audience blown away. Laughter was heard, tears were shed and cries of amazement filled the room as each performance delivered an act of excellence.

The evening did not shy away from addressing the problems women and girls face around the world, and Olivia Rogers shared a personal and encouraging testimony of overcoming her struggles as a young woman.

Ultimately, we were able to raise over $2000 for UN Women. The funds will go towards developing the Safe Bus service in Papua New Guinea, which will provide women and children safe access to employment and education. Thank you to all involved and those who took the time to come along and support this drive. It was a truly special night celebrating womanhood. Women Have Every Right to be equal.

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 24 defeated Saints White 5
The girls played great all game. We passed the ball around well to each other. The girls have all improved over the season and it has been a pleasure to coach them. – Harrison Petkovic (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints White 5 defeated by Saints Blue 24
It was the battle of the two Saints’ teams and Saints Blue came out on top. The score does not really reflect how even general court play was, but Saints White just could not make the most of the scoring opportunities. The game was played in good spirits despite finishing in the rain. As coach of the White team, I have been really happy with the improvement shown by the girls over the term and hopefully will see them back next year playing basketball. – Brenton Davies

Year 5 – Saints 25 defeated Walford Gold 4
The girls had a fantastic last game. All of them have shown such great improvement and I would like to thank them for such a terrific season. Thanks also goes to all the wonderful parents who have supported their daughters each game and driven them to away games. – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

HOCKEY

Year 5/6 – Saints 7 defeated Seymour Green 0
Lauren Parton and Mathilda Thomas played an amazing game, both scoring 2 goals each. Freya Hermann made a great tackle which resulted in a free for our team. Marcella Tolley and Gloria Zou were excellent in defence, stopping Seymour scoring any goals. Daisy Kennett did well at fullback, feeding the ball to our forwards. A special thanks to Coco Dimond and Francine Stavrou for volunteering to play with Seymour as they didn’t have enough players. – Ruby and Marcella

LACROSSE

Under 13 Grand Final – Saints 14 defeated by Glenelg 16
The match began well with Ashlyn May (Year 6) winning a majority of the centres and making sure to pass to girls who were getting away from their defenders. Jenna Maione (Year 6) often found herself free and called for the ball to provide the next pass. Alannah Godfrey (Year 5), Mathilda Thomas (Year 6) and Dani Cox (Year 6) did a good job at keeping their defenders busy in attack. In defence, Lucy Schirripa (Year 7) worked hard for ground balls that helped cause turnovers. At half-time, the girls were down by 1. Emma Pool (Year 7) played a great game as she fought hard for the ball and took an extra second to place it around the goalie, resulting in many goals. Our defenders Phoebe Black (Year 7), Lauren Pearce (Year 5) and Elysia Scarr (Year 5) did well at making sure their players did not get the ball. Zoe Pool (Year 6) made sure to get the back-ups in attack. Maddy Lisle (Year 7) and Lara Maione (Year 5) were our goalies and they made several great saves. Unfortunately, the girls lost but they put up an amazing fight, especially since it was the first season playing lacrosse for six of them. Goal scorers: Dani (3), Jenna (1), Emma (6) and Mathilda (4). Best players: Emma, Jenna, Ash and Lucy. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

NETBALL

Year 4 – Saints 13 defeated Seymour 2
After a slow start in the first half due to cold and wet conditions, the girls fought back and played an excellent second half. They should be congratulated on a fabulous season being undefeated! Every week, great enthusiasm and effort was displayed both at training and matches, which paid off convincingly. Thank you girls for another great season of netball – and also to Karen for helping me coach this season! – Chelsea Walls

Enews – Week 8, Term 3 2018

Issue no. 28Enews-banner

From the Acting Director of Early Learning

“Participation in educational services is a process of reciprocity where children and adults encounter one another in a relationship that is filled with opportunities for teaching and learning. Participation is not limited to child and educator but also encompasses families and members of the wider community.” – Mel Angel, St Peter’s Girls’ ELC Educator

In early childhood education, we recognise that the best experiences for children happen when there is a strong relationship between the educational facility and the child’s family. The relationship with each will be unique, although all partnerships will share the same features of trust and respect.

K Web

At the ELC, we believe if we want our children to learn about the value of community and connections with others, we need to consider the example we set and the opportunities we provide. We have witnessed when families participate in the life of the School, it deepens their understanding of their child and their capabilities. It creates a beautiful connection between home and school through shared experiences.

The ELC educators have reflected on the concept of participation and what this looks likes. We have recognised that participation looks different for children, so therefore it needs to look different for families. What can we put in place to support the participation of all families? What can we do to encourage the participation of our families? How can we include the children to engage their family in the ELC?

Community Service Prefect Dominique Rigby has strengthened connections between the ELC and the ‘big school’ by organising a special picnic lunch for the children and the Year 12s each term. They have been meeting on Chiverton Lawns to eat their lunches together, share jokes and stories, and this has heightened the children’s understanding of the ‘big school’. Their faces light up as they begin to establish connections with the ‘big girls’ and understand they are part of the wider Saints’ community.

Last Saturday, the Ferguson Room children and educators invited families to join them on a botanical exploration of Ferguson Park. The children shared their learning with their loved ones as they looked for special leaves, flowers and grasses. Our friend and Kaurna elder Tamaru shared his connection to the land through stories about his culture and family traditions.

This week, the children hosted their Grandparents and special friends for an afternoon tea, where they enjoyed sharing their learning environment.

Through these experiences, the strength of our community has been evident and it has been truly heartwarming to witness.

Another Wave of SUBS Success

St Peter’s Girls’ dominance in the SUBS in Schools technology challenge has grown, with more success in 2018.

Last week, two of our teams were crowned State Champions in Spatial Design and Large ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle), with second place in those categories awarded to two other groups of Saints Girls. The four teams have been invited to participate at the National Finals in December. The Year 10 students spent many hours developing and refining their projects, enjoying industry collaboration with mentors from SAAB.

Last year, four of our students were crowned National runners up for their submarine efforts, and another group before them took out the inaugural National title, demonstrating the School’s strength in this vital area.

More than Words: Poetry Recital Excellence

W8 - Poetry

During Term 3, the Year 4, 5 and 6 classes have focussed on performance poetry in the lead up to the Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA) Poetry Recital Competition. The top three performers from each class participated in an in-school Preliminary Final where they performed a poem in front of a school adjudicator. One student was chosen from each year level to represent the School in the Final and these students were Sophie Blight (Year 4), Zoë O’Callaghan (Year 5) and Charlotte Norman (Year 6).

The Final was held at Wilderness School on Wednesday 5 September. This competition is designed to encourage an enjoyment of reading and an appreciation of poetry. It also helps develop memorisation skills, promote good elocution and provides an opportunity for students to gain confidence in performing before an audience.

Our three representatives competed with 39 other students from a range of independent schools. Students were expected to recite one poem set by the IPSHA panel and one poem of personal choice. In Year 5, Zoë was awarded third place for her reading of Tide Talk by Max Fatchen and The Day the War Came by Nicola Davies. The competition was tight and all three competitors performed in an outstanding manner. They can be congratulated on their personal commitment to rehearsing and memorising their poems as well as the courage they displayed in performing before such a large audience.

Sports News

Congratulations

Willow Stewart-Rattray (Year 7) has been named a Co-Captain of the State Primary School Netball team travelling to Darwin in Week 9.

Imogen Elliott (Year 8) has been selected to represent School Sport SA at the National Surfing Championships being held on the South Coast from 1 – 9 December

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 32 defeated by St Ignatius 44
The game was a challenging one for the girls. It was a windy day and St Ignatius was a tough team. We stayed with them for most of the match but unfortunately they got away in the fourth and we couldn’t catch up. – Harrison Petkovic (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 20 defeated Pembroke 17
A really pleasing win today with only five players. Everyone contributed and it was great to see more shots starting to drop. I asked the team for a really strong defensive effort after quarter-time and they delivered, keeping the opposition to 9 points for those three quarters. Lydia and Jenna led the way defensively and Amy finished off their good work with 8 points. – Brenton Davies

Year 5 – Saints 32 defeated Wilderness 2
The team had a great win against Wilderness. Unfortunately, our opposition only had four players but it was good to see the girls show great sportsmanship as one player from our team filled in for them each quarter to help out. Another great team effort, the girls are getting much better at lay ups and passing ahead to their teammates after a few dribbles. It’s terrific to see so much improvement from all players. – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

GYMNASTICS

On 12 September, as part of the Gymnastics program, girls in Years 3 – 5 were given the opportunity to represent Saints Girls at the interschool Gym For All Challenge. This competition allowed each student to demonstrate the gymnastics skills they’ve developed throughout the year and to build valuable skills such as teamwork and resilience. The girls learnt routines for four different apparatus and rehearsed these over several weeks. Each gymnast showed great determination and enthusiasm, particularly during somewhat daunting times such as mounting the beam or performing individual routines. I hope that the new students thoroughly enjoyed the fun competitiveness of the day as there were smiles all round when the awards were presented. – Emma Auricht (Captain)

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 12 defeated Brighton 10
All of the girls were eager to have a second chance to go into this year’s Grand Final. Ashlyn May (Year 6) did an excellent job at getting centre possession almost every time. Whilst in midfield, Jenna Maione (Year 6) and Alannah Godfrey (Year 5) ran hard into space to be the next pass. Dani Cox (Year 6) impressed by running around the goal to improve her angle and shoot goals. In defence, Lauren Pearce (Year 5), Phoebe Black (Year 7) and Elysia Scarr (Year 5) did well at keeping their sticks up. Emma Pool (Year 7) and Lucy Schirripa (Year 7), also in defence, ran hard to keep up with players and slide to the girl with the ball. Zoe Pool (Year 6) ran hard on back-ups to keep possession of the ball, whilst Mathilda Thomas (Year 6) and Lara Maione (Year 5) did a great job at running away from their defenders. Maddy Lisle (year 7) was our awesome goalie. Goal scorers: Dani (5), Jenna (1), Ashlyn (2) and Mathilda (4). Well done to the girls for playing a great team game and getting into the Grand Final, which will be held at Norwood Oval tomorrow at 8:30am. We hope to see you there and, if you are coming along, perhaps arrive a touch earlier as parking can be limited. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints 9 defeated East Torrens Payneham 8
It was a gorgeous Saturday morning for our final match of the season. Saints came up against a formidable opponent and played their best game of the year by using the strategies that they’d been developing over time. It was a true team effort, as made evident by the fact that six players from the 11-person squad scored goals, and the whole team assisted in make these goals possible. All the parents should be very proud of how well their daughters performed under pressure. The coaching staff hope that all of the girls return next season and bring a friend along to continue to grow Saints’ Lacrosse program.

Goal scorers were Madi Dornbusch (Year 4) with 3, Claris Stolcman (Year 2) with 2, and Grace Jones, Sophie Lively, Savannah Walls (all Year 4) and Ella Pearce (Year 3) with 1 goal each. The top goal scorer for the season was Savannah Walls. Special mention goes to our goalkeepers this match, Claris Stolcman, who was very courageous, and Emily Bates (Year 4) who was an impenetrable force in defence. – Courtney Tasker (Coach)

NETBALL

Year 3/4 Blue– Saints 7 defeated by Seymour 12
The girls played really well as a team and, despite the loss, they worked hard to cause multiple turnovers. Our defence was strong and every player put pressure onto each pass to then work out down our end. Well done to all girls who played in the mid-court and worked together to take the ball from defence to attack. Our shooters were strong and kept moving around to work the ball in to the ring to score goals. A special mention to Charlotte Catchpole who played a brilliant game and tried out positions in all areas of the court. – Georgia Naughton

Year 3/4 White – Saints 1 defeated by Pembroke 3
Our girls showed lots of determination and teamwork. Their shoulder passes and leading into space have improved each week and there were some lovely passages of play from one end of the court to the other. Defensively, the girls have been working hard on their one-on-one defence and 3-feet hands over defence. Almost all players managed to turn the ball over at some stage and if they didn’t, they were quick to make sure they had their hands up defending the pass. The game was close from start to finish, with Pembroke just pipping us in the last quarter. Well done girls, a great effort! – Alice Johnswood

Year 4 – Saints 16 defeated Pembroke 3
After a slow start to the game in the first quarter, the girls lifted and played an excellent second quarter. Throughout the game, they had some fantastic passages of play. They continued to display great teamwork and encouragement on the court. Chloe Richardson played an outstanding match using her speed to take multiple intercepts against tall opposition. Well done girls! – Chelsea Walls

Thankfully, the weather was kind and the annual Sports Day was another excellent example of mass participation, House spirit and our strong community.

Richard Lisle inside 220The day started with the much anticipated ‘House Scramble’, where girls, staff and parents of all abilities, ages, sizes and speeds try to run a lap within an allotted time, and thus gain a valuable House Point. The carnival ended with the St Peter’s Girls’ School ‘Gift’ and the fiercely competed relays. It’s always a joy to see so many students participating in such a variety of events, some at an extremely high level, others just for the thrill of competing and contributing towards their House score.

Credit must go to Neil Fuller, Dan Searle and their team for such a well-run event, and the army of staff and parent volunteers who help them. One of the features of the day that always impresses me is the extremely high level of participation. This is, I’m sure, born out of a combination of our single-sex structure which removes the pressure that some girls feel in co-educational settings, and the infectious sense of fun and camaraderie that exists amongst the girls.

Congratulations to all students who participated and made the day such a highlight of the term.

To find out who won, watch the video below.

Saints Girls Talk of the Town

W6 - Debating

In this year’s debating season, St Peter’s Girls had 11 teams entered in the competition. This week, six made it through to the Quarter Finals which were held on Tuesday and Wednesday night at Pembroke. The successful teams were Year 9 White and Year 9 Blue who then had to debate each other in the first finals round. Congratulations to 9 Blue who narrowly beat their Saints’ opponents and now move on to the Semi-Finals next Tuesday.

On Wednesday night, 10 White prevailed against Adelaide High School, and our 10 Green defeated our 10 Blue team in a close contest.

In the Senior Division, our White team was victorious over St John’s Grammar School.

Congratulations to all of those girls, their teachers and coaches for making the finals and good luck to those in the Semi-Finals next week.

Students Dish Up Fine Dining Feast

W7 - Food and Hospitality

On Wednesday, the Stage 2 Food and Hospitality girls were pleased to undertake their final group practical activity. They planned and presented a formally-served dinner with a multicultural theme.

Each student was responsible for the preparation and service of a particular dish, but they supported each other throughout all aspects, from the menu creation to the final plating and service.

The menu included prawn and avocado cocktails, napolitana angel hair pasta, arancini and root vegetables with basil oil, pork belly with caramelised pears and pickled kohlrabi, lemon sorbet palette cleanser, and raspberry and chocolate domes. Prior to the event, the students researched contemporary plating styles, menus and service.

This activity allowed the students to showcase the organisation and time management skills they have developed over the year. The meal was served to a special guest invited by each of the girls. It was a lovely night that enabled the girls to experience some of the reality of serving a larger group in a collaborative manner.

ELC Picnic

W7 - Year 12 Picnic

On Tuesday, the Year 12 girls shared a picnic lunch with friends from the ELC. It’s the second time this year that the picnic lunch has run, and it was great to see the children enjoy the event. It was a fantastic opportunity for the older and younger girls to interact and have some fun together.

I enjoyed talking to the children about what they’re looking forward to when they’re old enough for the ‘big school’, and I’m sure they loved having some older girls to play ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf?’

It’s been a privilege to organise this event and see everyone enjoy it, and I hope that it will continue for years to come.

Year 2s Out and About

W7 - Year 2

As part of our Unit of Inquiry ‘People can make choices to support the sustainability of the Earth’s resources’, the Year 2 girls visited Morialta Falls Conservation Park. We explored where water can be found and questioned where it might have been sourced from. We had delightful weather and the girls enjoyed learning in a natural environment. They particularly enjoyed exploring the nature playground as well!

The Year 2 classes also had a fabulous time during our excursion to the Maritime Museum. It provided terrific provocation for our next unit as we discover how the past influences the present and allows us to imagine the future. We explored the ketch and made many discoveries from the past as we investigated the museum artifacts and history. We were blessed with wonderful sunshine as we climbed the lighthouse and walked along the wharf. We even spotted dolphins frolicking in the Port River!

Bell Shakespeare Experience

W7 - Bell Shakespeare

On Friday 31 August, all students in Years 7 – 12 had the privilege of attending one of two performances by Bell Shakespeare. The troupe of three actors, who travel the country performing plays that educate students about the bard’s works, presented Shakespeare is Dead – a 45 minute exploration of the language, themes, style and value of all 37 of the plays – to the Year 7, 8 and 9 students, and followed that with a truncated version of Macbeth for the Year 10 and 11 students.

Vibrant, enthusiastic and versatile, the actors made complex literature accessible to all students as they immersed them in the history and texts of the world’s most reputed poet/dramatist. The quirky nature of both presentations – with an emphasis upon humour, audience involvement and a resourceful use of props – meant that the performances were appealing to all students and provided both an educational and entertaining experience.

BADMINTON

A great effort from the Open Badminton teams. The A1 team only just lost to Westminster in claiming the shield, losing on sets. It is the first time Saints have entered two teams in the A and another two teams in the B grade, so all girls should be very proud of the season they have had.

A1 – Saints 3 (6) defeated by Westminster 3 (7)

A2 – Saints defeated Seymour on forfeit

B1 – Saints 1 defeated by Westminster 5

B2 – Saints defeated Seymour on forfeit

BASKETBALL

Year 6 Blue – Saints 34 defeated Wilderness Gold 22
We played a great game. It was close all the way until the last couple of minutes when we decided to pull away for the win. The ball was passed efficiently and the girls did well for only playing with five. – Harrison Petkovic (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 16 defeated by Seymour 42
A tough game for the girls against much taller opponents. We battled hard and had many scoring opportunities which we did not make the most of, and we need to work on our layups. It was pleasing to see the team battle it out to the end, but Seymour were just too strong. – Brenton Davies

Year 5 – Saints 27 defeated by Seymour 13
The team had another tough game against Seymour (again). The girls showed improvement though, as we only lost 27-13; the last time we played them we lost by 20. We were also missing a top scorer for our team so it was good to see the other girls step up and have a go! Unfortunately not a lot of our shots went in but we did have plenty of opportunities. – Sarah Turnbull (Coach)

HOCKEY

Year 5/6 – Saints 4 defeated Walford Blue 2
The team had a good win. Goal scorers were Winnie, Mathilda and Lauren. There were many great tackles and also a few great runs, resulting in a couple of well fought short corners. The game was very close and we fought all the way. Although the weather was not ideal, we didn’t give up. We played very well as a team and everyone gave 100%. Well played girls! – Mathilda Thomas and Lauren Parton

LACROSSE

Under 13 – Saints 10 defeated by Glenelg 14
The girls started the match very well. Alannah Godfrey (Year 5) positioned herself correctly wherever she was on the field whilst Dani Cox (Year 6) skilfully shot many goals. Good work to Jenna Maione (Year 6), Emma Pool (Year 7), Lucy Schirripa (Year 7) and Mathilda Thomas (Year 6) for fighting hard for ground balls. Ashlyn May (Year 6) showed strong defence and slid to the girl with the ball at right times. At half-time, the girls were up by 2 goals. In attack, Zoe Pool (Year 6) also fought hard for ground balls, resulting in her shooting a goal. Phoebe Black (Year 7) and Elysia Scarr (Year 5) stuck to their players well in defence. Our goalies were Lauren Pearce (Year 5) and Lara Maione (Year 5). Despite the loss, the girls get a second chance to reach the grand final. Goal scorers: Dani (6), Jenna (1), Emma (1), Zoe (1) and Mathilda (1). Best players: Ashlyn, Jenna, Dani and Lucy. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints 3 defeated by Wilderness White 4
Another wet Saturday saw Saints put in a stupendous effort in a hard-fought match. It was good to see the team play a really strong game, and all the girls combined well. Considering the weather, they played an impressive match and it was wonderful to see their defence improve even more this week. Goal scorers were Grace Jones (Year 4) with 2 goals, and Madi Dornbusch (Year 4) with 1. Special mention goes to our goalkeeper this week, Ella Pearce (Year 3), who was very courageous. Lastly, the final game of the season is tomorrow, so we hope to see as many of you as possible out supporting the girls. – Courtney Tasker (Coach)

NETBALL

YEAR 8/9 KNOCKOUT NETBALL
Our Year 8/9 Knockout Netball team headed to Priceline Stadium on Tuesday 28 August to play off in the State finals.

The girls had a tough day at the office! We started slowly and unfortunately never really got going. We were unable to find the same form that got us to the finals. We showed glimpses of our best netball throughout the day, culminating in a last quarter effort to come from 11 down at three-quarter-time to only lose by two!

As challenging as the day was, the girls should be very proud of their efforts to make the finals day and be in the top six Year 8/9 netball teams from across the State.

Well done girls, let’s come back bigger and better next year!

YEAR 6/7 KNOCKOUT NETBALL
Our Year 6/7 netballers headed to Mt Barker Recreation Centre on Thursday 30 August to take on St Joseph’s School (Murray Bridge) in the semi-final of the knockout competition.

A win here would see us progress to the State finals day. Both teams started nervously, but settled into the game well. Scores were level at the first break.

We made some positional changes at quarter-time and managed to take the ascendancy and held a 2-goal lead at half-time.

In the second half, our defence really got on top, applying lots of pressure around the circle edge allowing our circle defenders to pounce on any high or loose balls. We didn’t miss a rebound in defence and that, combined with our turnovers, gave our attackers a lot of ball. Our mid-court were hard-working and patient with the ball, and our goalies worked beautifully together and importantly finished off their team’s good work with goals! We outscored St Joseph’s 6 to 3 and were 5 up with one quarter to go.

Our girls held their nerve and finished strongly in the last quarter, winning it 8 to 5 and taking the match 31-23. Well done girls! A fantastic team effort.

We will now play off in the State finals on Thursday 27 September against the three other top schools in the State.

YEAR 8A NETBALL GRAND FINAL
Our netballers headed to Immanuel College on Saturday to take on Seymour in the final of the 8A competition.

Seymour had been the girls’ only loss all season, but despite this, we went in confident knowing that the loss had been narrow and if we played our best, we had the ability to beat them.

The game was tight for the entire four quarters, with Seymour taking a slight advantage in the second. Our girls pushed hard and fought back, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough with Seymour running out eventual winners 30-24.

The girls should be very proud of their efforts not only on Saturday but across the entire season. A huge thank you to Gemma Rowe who coached the girls, pushed them hard and taught them lots of useful skills throughout the season.

Year 4 – Saints defeated Pembroke 24-1
This game, we had nine players with Chloe Richardson playing her first game for the term. They rotated throughout different positions which they do not usually play and it was great to see the amount of consistent effort they put in. Emily Bates and Savannah Walls worked well in defence, creating turnovers, and attack worked together to create space resulting in another high scoring game. Excellent win girls! – Chelsea Walls

Year 3/4 – Blue drew with Year 3/4 White 7-7
Our Year 3/4 teams took on each other in this match. They played the game in wonderful spirit as we mixed up the teams every quarter. It was great to see how much the girls have improved since the beginning of the season. The 3-feet, hands over defence was a particular highlight. The girls footwork and shoulder passing is also coming along nicely.

The match was close all the way through and ended up as draw, which was a fitting end to a very well-played game.

VOLLEYBALL

Last Wednesday, the Open A volleyball team travelled to Immanuel with hopes to beat both Immanuel and St Aloysius in order to reach the knockout competition. Our first game was against Immanuel who we knew would be the hardest of the two, but that didn’t stop us putting up a fight. The first set saw us leading for the vast majority but, unfortunately, we couldn’t finish it off with Immanuel taking the set 25-21. Georgie Keough was on fire, setting perfect high balls to our hitters to score points. The next set we again didn’t give up; we were all hungry for the ball and didn’t want to lose. Clair Kao spiked powerfully and strategically placed hits that scored our team multiple points to closely lose the set 20-25. We then finished off the game leading in the 3rd set 19-18 but ran out of time meaning the set didn’t count.

St Aloysius was our next game where we tried different player combos and used Isabella Villani as a libero. We won the first set 25-21. Nicolette Miller was unstoppable at the net, scoring serval blocks against their strongest hitters. In the second set, we came across patches where we struggled to side out, giving St Aloysius the chance to catch up. We kept on fighting, finishing with a set score of 25-23. The last set wasn’t a good representation of how we played as a team, losing 19-25. Isobel Tan brought great energy to the court along with passing that made the setters’ job easy. I’m so proud of the girls’ efforts and it really showed winning against St Aloysius along with the strong competition we brought against Immanuel. Back to the gym to train and better ourselves for the season ahead – Charlotte White
