From the Director of Teaching and Learning

MeredithBeck_web As the year draws to an end (at a crescendo!) I think that my mantra for 2017 is going to be balance. Across the sub-schools the students are bringing their 2016 studies to a conclusion. Exams, assignments, folios, tests and various productions abound. Pressure and joy are evident at this summative assessment period as students demonstrate their knowledge and skill development, and show how their thinking and learning have progressed. Hopefully, this culminates in a celebration of growth and success and pride in a job well done.

Teachers are earnestly marking, report writing and completing numerous administrative tasks while keeping the focus on motivating their students to maintain high standards and effort. Superimposed on the curriculum objectives, are preparations for the wonderful end of year and festivities. Perhaps herein lies a balance; putting in the hard work and then reaping the rewards through the celebration. This energetic pace at School is replicated throughout the community. Families manage multiple end of year tasks, expectations and commitments and try to keep everyone happy. So I hear you say, yes, balance is important but it is not a message I need to hear now!

When we are so busy, it can be difficult to think about life’s priorities. What do we value from an education and indeed from life?

Teachers and parents are united in wanting their children to have the skills that equip them for a happy and fulfilling present and future. In a supportive and nurturing environment like ours, when do we intervene, allow the girls to manage situations for themselves, fight their own battles and, dare I say it, fail? As teachers we need to be very aware of the line between support and scaffolding a student’s learning and editing the work to an extent that one asks whose work is it? Parents face the additional challenge of the need to nurture and protect, but resist the unflattering label of helicopter parents who do not allow their children to risk-take (read be courageous) and learn from their mistakes. This is another important balancing act; knowing when to intervene and when to allow the child to take responsibility, to manage the situation themselves.

Well-being is at the very heart of what we want for our children and is the culture in which learning and growth thrive. The growing Nature Schools phenomena arising from the Finnish experience is taking resilience, courage and independence to new levels, with reported benefits to well-being. With no timetables, no tests to pass and student-directed learning, children are free to take risks. Certainly, one can imagine how collaborative learning, connectedness and creativity would thrive.

An article I read recently states that 26 percent of Australian children have suffered anxiety, depression and mental health issues. If correct, there is indeed something out of balance. Furthermore, due to the growth of anxiety, increasing numbers of students are avoiding exams. Professor Jennie Hudson from Macquarie University contends that avoiding means the child misses out on the opportunity to learn accurate information about the situation, like ‘I can handle it’. Knowing that one has faced a challenge and can handle it is empowering and needs to start at an early age.

To return to Saints, balance, and what we prioritise at this busy time: the scales seem tipped towards the doing. However, we will soon celebrate. Together we will celebrate with our courageous selves who may have fallen over but picked ourselves up, and with those who for whom success is the norm. Perhaps, after the doing, the balance will return in finding a time to be with family and friends, reflect, rejuvenate and just be. I think it’s called Christmas.

Saints Girls star at Australian eChallenge!

Beginning in July this year a number of Year 10 students at St Peter’s Girls participated in the Australian eChallenge, run by the Entrepreneurship Commercialisation and Innovation Centre (ECIC) at the University of Adelaide. This is a program that is run in Australia and internationally in countries such as France and Germany. These girls attended lectures with university students and eventually competed against over 20 other secondary school teams from around South Australia. The process involved learning how to create and maintain a business, and required the girls to create their own businesses and begin the steps to launch them. Two teams were formed and the creative process resulted in LéLé (Antonia Kirsten-Parsch, Thandi Murada, Ashleigh Rogers and Sara Possingham) and GottaGo (Lucy Cox, Charlene Lee, Felicia Mi and Khandee Swaeney).

echallenge-picLéLé is a 100% fruit powder with no added sugar or artificial flavouring, preservatives or
colouring. The powdered fruit maintains the vitamins and nutritional content the same as when the fruit is freshly picked. The product can be mixed with water to make a refreshing juice or mixed with milk to make a delicious smoothie. There will be a wide range of flavours to cater for every taste preference. Currently, there is a 5 Fruit Combo powder with strawberry, pear, banana and apple infused with raspberry. This is to be sold with a branded shaker bottle in a large container for regular use and a single serve sachet. It can be used as a nutritious breakfast, a way to easily enhance the flavour of drinks or as a quick energy boost on the go!

GottaGo is a free app allowing you to find any toilet near you. It will be available on the app store for use across the world. Not only can it direct you to the nearest toilet, but also it will give you the facility’s star rating, customer reviews and details on disability access, gender labels, baby change tables and more. It can be used by any person with a phone, but particularly aimed at those for whom it is essential that they can access a certain standard of toilet at any time of the day. This includes those who are transgender, disabled, pregnant or have conditions like irritable bowel syndrome.

Both teams pitched their business and asked for investment from a panel of judges. As a result of their extraordinary performance, they were part of the top 6 school finalists in the State, who were invited to a black-tie awards dinner held at the Adelaide Oval. Ms Shea also attended, as well as Mr Trobbiani who was a valuable mentor throughout the course. The teams had phenomenal results, with LéLé finishing in 1st place, winning $5000, and GottaGo finishing in 2nd place, winning $2500 and a tour of Microsoft worth $10,000. We are excited to see these upcoming businesses which will soon become a reality!

Student Voice: Care Packs for the Australian Refugee Association

regugee-use-this-oneOver the past two years, Patteson House, with the Year 10 class at the forefront, has begun to develop a connection with the Australian Refugee Association (ARA). This term, 10 Patteson has asked the school to donate books, toys, toiletries, baskets, Christmas decorations, and a multitude of other items to create Christmas Care Packs for the ARA’s annual Christmas Food and Gift Drive. We received overwhelming support, with incredibly generous donations from all year groups.

On Monday, Rachel Nyiramugisha, a Youth Ambassador for the ARA, accepted our gifts on behalf of the organisation in front of the senior Patteson students. She spoke to us about the programs the ARA offers and about her time as a refugee, entering a new country and receiving gifts from the very program we were donating to. Her account of being a young refugee and receiving the support from the ARA years ago allowed the students to reflect on the impact our donations might have.

Year 10 Patteson would like to thank each of the students, teachers and parents who donated items towards these care packs. This program would not have been such a success without the school community’s generous response.

Support the 2017 Cambodia Trip

A group of 17 girls from Years 11 and 10 from are heading off to Cambodia on December 10 and staying until 23 December to help out the disadvantaged. While there, these girls will be dedicating their time to help build a home for a family in need. They’ll also be teaching at New Hope for Cambodian Children orphanage. This trip occurs once a year and is solely devoted to assist the people of Cambodia in need of help.

So far the ‘Cambodia Group’ have managed to raise $9,000 with the goal of $19,000. Although this goal seems far off, it can be achieved with the help of the school and outside community. One of the main events being held is a movie night at the Capri Theatre on November 25, where Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is being shown. Come and show your support for this event and donate so these girls can improve the lives of people less fortunate.

Thousands of families and individuals in Cambodia do not have a safe and secure place to call home. With the money donated, their lives will be changed just by placing a roof over their heads. Become part of the solution to this poverty problem and help them to reach this goal. The money raised will be donated to Habitat for Humanity to buy the building supplies for the houses; even a small donation will have an amazing impact.

Rowing Update: Historic moment for Saints Rowing!

img_1162
What a regatta we had at the Port! For those of you who haven’t been to the Port, you get the occasional dolphin, big boat and a course with no lanes. Despite this, all of our girls performed brilliantly and should be extremely proud of their efforts!

The Juniors rowed their hearts out, with many of our crews getting placings whilst rowing against girls/women much older than them. For the Juniors this term it has been about trying different girls in different seats. This will give us strong combinations in Term 1, 2017, when all of the important races take place. We have never had this many junior crews before and it makes for a really strong future for Saints Rowing.

Our Inters had to make a change due to one of the girls being sick so that meant the remaining girls had to step up. And step up they did, winning both of their races in each  of the grades. Overcoming this adversity shows that we have good depth and also determination, which are two of the most important qualities of a strong school rowing program. The willingness these girls have to work hard and never give up is something that I admire about them all.

The Seniors created a slice of history on Saturday, by winning more Senior races in one day than we have in our 5 year rowing history! Our 1st IV did an amazing job winning both of their races by a big margin, which follows on from their fantastic performance in Round the Island. The most pleasing aspect about the IV is that they have been getting better with every training, which makes it even more pleasing to see them do well. With the 1st VIII this regatta was something that Simon and I targeted; we knew that there was a shield on offer so we went for it and the girls delivered big time! We knew Pembroke who were our main competition after beating Loreto in the previous regatta were confident about defeating us. We knew our girls had been training well; they just needed to believe and they did, leaving Pembroke in their wake in both races. All the Seniors have bonded well, making them a strong unit, which is important as they know they have each other’s back when the pressure is on.

I went away on Saturday really proud of what all the girls achieved and it shows that we as a school are moving in the right direction. GO, SAINTS!

10 Selwyn Smith Family fundraiser

bike-challenge

On Friday 18 November the Year 10 Selwyn girls – assisted by a few intrepid teachers – rode stationary bikes on the Arts Centre steps to raise money for the Smith Family Bike project. The girls set themselves the challenge of riding one kilometre for every dollar raised and started riding at 7.30am. Over the course of the day, with each sharing the load, the total distance covered was 496km, earning every dollar donated ($495.70). In addition, the girls baked cupcakes and sold them at a recess stall, raising an additional $231.30. The total of $727 is being added to that raised during other events through the year and will be used to purchase good quality bikes that will be donated to the Smith Family. Those bikes will then be provided to children whose educational opportunities will be enhanced by access to their own method of transport.

Sports Nominations 2017

Nominations for sport Term 1, 2017, are now available to be submitted. Please ensure that you make sure you select the year that the students will be in next year! While training days have been provided, these are subject to change based on availability of coaches. This quick and easy process can be done by clicking on this link.

Water Polo

Open A – Saints 4 defeated by Pembroke 9
Playing Pembroke was a tough game but the players were able to work cohesively together constructing set plays and putting our training plans into action. It was good to see the progression and the use of a new set-up. This helped us to play more defensively to ensure we limited their goal opportunities. Pembroke was an aggressive team that always puts up a strong fight. Saints rose to the challenge in playing strong defensively and scored when opportunities were given. Thank you to Matt Martin for coaching and supporting us this term. We always take on board the helpful feedback and have been able to improve as a team. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Open B – Saints 1 defeated Mercedes 9
Despite the score, it was a very impressive and exciting game of water polo to watch. Again, the girls were very strong in their defence, with all players contributing to the attacking efforts, scoring of goals and defensive turnovers. The girls’ continuous determination and skills in defence were fantastic to watch and it was also very exciting to see the level of improvement the team has made. Seeing this development shows the level of commitment that all the girls are putting into their training, and this week’s game truly highlighted their developed techniques and game knowledge evident through the standard of play displayed. Thank you to the Bs’ coach, Lucy, for all the support and consistent feedback and encouragement to all the girls. We look forward to next year. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Year 7/8 – Saints 6 drew with Pembroke 6
This was a close game throughout for the girls. Pembroke fought hard and defended well. Saints stretched their lead when they scored 3 goals in the third quarter through some good teamwork and excellent shooting from Olivia Goldsmith, Matilda Braithwaite and Alyssa Woolley. Unfortunately, Saints allowed Pembroke back into the game in the last quarter and they levelled the score just before the end of the game. Despite this, Saints managed to end the season undefeated. Congratulations to Saskia Jonats, Lucy Young and Harriet Maerschel who also had good games. Harriet Maerschel (Year 8)

The Open D girls were also beaten by a strong Westminster team. Although Westminster were very good our girls put up a very good fight which was good to see. Again, congratulations to all the girls on a great season and I hope they all continue to play in the future. By Cambell Baker (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 3 defeated Pulteney 0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-9)
A great finish to the season by the girls this week. Throughout this term the girls have come a long way with their abilities and it has definitely shown out on the volleyball court, as they are undefeated for the season and in the running to win the premiership. Big congratulations to the girls for their efforts and great sportsmanship. It has been a pleasure coaching you, girls. Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Middle B – Saints 3 defeated Pulteney 0
It was another great win for the girls this week! We are very proud of this team this term and the improvements all the girls have made. This team’s confidence has growth throughout the term and it definitely shows out on the court! Thank you for a great season, girls; we are very proud of your achievements this term! Best of luck for next term! Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Middle C – Saints 3 defeated Concordia 0
Huge congratulations to all the girls in the Middle C team. With a few new girls, the team has come together very well and the girls have greatly improved in the few short weeks we have had. We are very proud of all the girls and their efforts and enthusiasm throughout the term. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the girls this term. We wish them all the best for the next term of volleyball! Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Basketball

Middle C1 – Saints 14 defeated by Pembroke 27
The girls played well for the final match of the year, despite the final score. It was fantastic to see each player execute skills and plays that we had been working on at training throughout the term. Well done to Ebony Lohe, Zara Sadri and Mahala Truscott for their strong drive down the court in attack and pressure in defence. Ebony Lohe was the team’s top scorer and Mahala Truscott caused the most turnovers throughout the match. Vanessa Brooks (Coach)

Middle C2 – Saints 22 defeated by Pembroke 26
The girls finished the season off well with a narrow loss to Pembroke. The game was fairly even, the difference being Pembroke rebounding the ball better in offence. Emmanuelle Russell and Grace Dodson had really solid games. Overall the season was a success as each week the girls improved. Well done. By Peter Krantis (Coach).

From the Head of Junior School

Suzanne-Haddy_webI’m not quite sure where the year has gone, but I do know is that it has gone unbelievably quickly! I have almost completed my first school year at Saints Girls, and what a fabulous, if incredibly busy, year it has been. In reflecting on just the last couple of months, the Junior School has been a flurry of activity. The significant amount of work towards our PYP Evaluation self-study process during the past 12 months culminated in a three-day visit by two assessors from the IB in Week 2 of this term. The initial verbal feedback from the assessors was extremely positive. Collaboration between staff, teachers’ dedication to the girls and the School, students’ engagement with the elements of the PYP, and the supportive nature of School leadership were just some aspects that were highlighted as particular strengths within our School. Later this term we will receive a written report that will outline further strengths and recommendations for moving forward, which together with current strategic planning will inform key curriculum initiatives over the next review cycle. Immense thanks go to our PYP Coordinator, Helen Smith, for the significant time and effort spent towards our evaluation in the months leading up to the visit, and all involved with the evaluation.

We acknowledge the success of our girls in the ICAS Mathematics and English competitions, and Australian Mathematics Competition, that were held in Term 3, with the following students receiving Distinctions or higher:

ICAS English:
• Distinctions to Apurva Ichalkaranje, Willow Stewart-Rattray, Marina Viese Vivaldi, Eleanor Humphrey, Charlotte Adams and Georgia Barclay. A High Distinction was awarded to Charli Young.

ICAS Mathematics:
• Distinction to Chanel Palmieri

Australian Mathematics Competition:
• Distinctions to Chanel Palmieri, Shirley Liu, Grace Stewart, Naomi Singh, Stephanie Andrejewskis, Ishita Chellaboina, Apurva Ichalkaranje, Charlotte Farley, Lysiane Franchi, Amy Dillon, Marcella Tolley, Eleanor Humphrey, Bronwyn Gautier, Emily Bryce, Georgia Parsons, Bridgette Leach, Willow Stewart-Rattray, Madeline Symon, Georgia Barclay and Angela Mourtzios. Both a High Distinction and Best in School award were awarded to Charlotte Adams.

Along with these achievements, every year level has been engaged in rich, rigorous learning and multitudes of new experiences. Our new Mid-Year Receptions made an incredibly smooth transition to school and are embracing everything that school has to offer. Our older Reception students have been learning how to write codes to program Tex, our humanoid robot, and the Bee-Bots. They have also proven that they are up to the task of setting their own learning goals as well as engaging in constructive self-assessment to help them meet these goals.

Year 1 students have been busy asking friends, neighbours and relatives to help them source mulberry leaves to feed an enormous number of very hungry silkworms. There was great excitement when the first silkworm began to spin its silken cocoon! Finalising a year-long unit of inquiry about family and identity, the girls hosted an afternoon tea for their grandparents or special family friend last week, to thank them for contributing to their learning in this unit of work. It was a delightful afternoon for both generations.

The Years 2 and 3 camp to Adare at Victor Harbor earlier this term was a fabulous opportunity for the girls to develop confidence, independence and courage, as the students further investigated aspects of their respective inquiry units and showed maturity in managing this away-from-home experience. The Year 2s were also very pleased to hear of their success in being awarded State Winner for their year level entry in the Primary Maths Challenge.

Individual students across the School who also received awards in the Primary Maths Challenge include:

State Winning Entries: Aojin Chen, Evelyn Gautier, Rose Downie and Bronwyn Gautier. A Highly Commended award was won by Emily Bates. We also congratulate teachers, Sallyann Bruun and Kathryn Clark, who were awarded State Winner for their educator entry.

The Year 3 students have undertaken several very rich inquiry journeys this semester, with highlights including a Health and Well-being Day, with Tai Chi sessions, yoga, lessons in mindfulness and relaxation, and learning about the importance of a healthy diet, exercise and good sleep. Their history unit included many discoveries about our School’s history as well as the local area of Burnside. Comparing past, present and future by looking at old pictures of the School, drawing maps of its current design, and looking ahead at the building redevelopment plans for the Middle School gave this unit a very personal and tangible focus.

In Year 4, excursions to Morialta, the South Australian Museum and Be Active Day added to the learning back at School. Science experiments discovering aspects of weathering and erosion, and learning about the earth’s surface, have led to the development of new interests, with crystals growing on windowsills and boxes of rocks being grouped and categorised. Visits to the classroom by Julia Shea and Georgie Sarah to talk with the girls about leadership and decision-making were also highlights.

Who could go past the Year 5 production of The Little Mermaid as a high point of the year in the Junior School? What a fabulous culmination of work by the Year 5 team along with many parents and friends of the School who assisted in numerous ways. We are now all humming tunes such as ‘Under the Sea’ and reminiscing about the talent of our students, who brilliantly sang, danced and acted their way through a thoroughly entertaining, high quality production. While the production is certainly a much-talked-about highlight, the Year 5s have also been studying world religions as well as eco-systems, and have enjoyed a visit from Ms Vaiju Joshi, who spoke with them about Hinduism, and an excursion to the Port Noarlunga Reef.

Finally, we come to Year 6. The Exhibition, which showcased the girls’ ability to undertake a self-directed inquiry, and celebrated the end of their journey with the PYP, was a great success. Every girl engaged with a topic that stretched her thinking, made her see the world through the perspectives of others, and encouraged her to take action through awareness-raising, direct involvement such as volunteering, or fundraising. Their leadership skills were then put to an end-of-year test, as they led the rest of the Junior School girls in their self-devised Health Hustles for PE Week. It has been a delight to see the maturity shown by these girls, and their enjoyment in working with the younger girls.

A snapshot such as this in no way captures the extent or breadth of experiences and learning of the last few months in the Junior School, but certainly gives an indication of the fabulous array of happenings that have filled the daily lives of our incredibly fortunate girls, under the direction of a talented and dedicated group of teachers. Indeed, it has been a busy, enjoyable and productive year.

ICAS English achievements and Spring Poetry Competition

Once again Saints Girls have achieved outstanding results in the ICAS English Competition. Bethany Cross was the State Medallist for having achieved the highest score for all Year 10 students across South Australia and the Northern Territory and the following students also secured distinction or high distinction awards in the competition:

  • Year 7: Sara Peak; Holly Wallman-Craddock;
  • Year 8: Siena Kulinski; Olufunto Komolafe; Charlotte Bleby; Matilda Braithwaite; Eleanor Anderson;
  • Year 9: Aditi Tamhankar; Amy Li; Sarah Carrodus;
  • Year 10: Felicia Mi; Charlene Lee and Kate Landon.

Last weekend three Year 12 students attended the launch of the Spring Poetry Anthology at Pulteney Grammar, having had their sonnets published in the periodical: Laura Bleby with her poem, ‘Versailles: a work in progress’; Kritika Mishra with her poem, ‘The Collapse’; and of particular note, Mila Loechel was Highly Commended by the Friendly Street Poets for her work entitled ‘Unspoken’ (reprinted below).

Unspoken by Mila Loechel
So I am trapped in this wordless silence
Mute: offensive- “incapable of speech”
Definition that cruelly defines me.
Language is power: I am, powerless.
Unspoken

Oh how I long for delectable Words
For Rhyme Assonance Rhythm. But I am
merely ideas opinions thoughts beliefs
perceptions observations conceptions.
Unspoken

I dream only to be understood and yet
Encaged within silence: the chasm bet-
-ween me and who others think is me grows,
a Crevasse; a Canyon; a Tempestuous Sea
Unspoken

But in this I shall be forever heard:
Eternal power of the written word

Year 10 Chinese Excursion

chinese-excursion-image

The Year 10 Chinese students attended the Tai Chi Workshop at the Confucius Institute, University of Adelaide, on Friday 4 November. The Workshop coordinator, Ms Lu, introduced the development of Tai Chi in China and its philosophy by an oral presentation and a Chinese film episode about it. Then our students were invited to the Barr-Smith Lawn to practise Tai Chi, guided by Ms. Lu who told a vivid and easy-to-remember story about the whole set of it.

After that, our Chinese learners went to the Chinese Restaurant (Bing’s) at the Central Market and practised ‘Ordering Food in the Restaurant’ which the second language learners have learnt earlier this term.

As you can see from the photos above, the girls not only learnt a lot but also had an amazing time!

Languages Week recap

paper-cutting

Week 4 this term was Languages Week in the Junior School, a time when we celebrate the different languages the girls study at Saints. We ran activities at lunchtime in the Junior School Library, the playground and the oval, including crafty French escargot, Chinese paper-cutting, Japanese origami and Chinese panda headbands. Most were conducted by the dedicated Languages Staff, but the Year 4 students helped Uchikawa Sensei run an origami session for Reception students, and the Year 5 Japanese students ran two Pokémon activities – one on Thursday for the Year 1s and 2s and one on Friday for the Year 3s and 4s. The activities planned for each session did not necessarily match the languages the students were studying, so they were able to experience different cultures across the course of the week.

A highlight was paper cutting day on Wednesday, where the girls experimented with 3D paper-cutting.

SUBS in School Technology Challenge
subs-in-schoolsb

On 6 and 7 December, teams from around the country will come together to participate in the 2016 SUBS in Schools National Final which is being held at Prince Alfred College. This will be the second National Finals event and as the knowledge of the students has increased since last year, so will the level of competition.

Saints Girls will have a team in each of the three categories. This will include the SUB category, which is the same one that Team Athena won earlier this year, the ROV category which is new to Australia and the accommodation space category.

We will provide results from the competition through Facebook and ‘Enews’.

It’s safe to say our girls are leading the country!

Uniform Update: Year 3 Students

As your daughter nears the end of Year 3, we thought it timely to remind you that she will need a few different uniform items for Year 4.

The junior blazer (cardigan) is no longer worn and is replaced by a navy blue jumper and a wool blazer. These items are compulsory and form part of the summer uniform.

The girls also move to a one piece swimming costume and a sports cap replaces the ‘bucket’ hat.

Surfing

Congratulations again to Imogen Elliott (Year 6) who came second in the 12 year girls category at the Rip Curl GromSearch. This was a National-based competition series, with Imogen competing against girls from Interstate. In very difficult conditions with a 2-3 ft swell and with 30 knot onshore winds, Imogen did amazingly well, only missing out on first place by a point. She was the highest placed SA competitor in the competition and also won the Judges Prize for being one of the stand-out competitors in the competition. Imogen will be competing at the National titles in a couple of weeks and we wish her well.

Junior Teeball

Saints 19 defeated St Ignatius 4
A fantastic game that allowed the team to further develop their skills. The girls started the game with a determination to win but also to keep a fun attitude whilst doing so. There were noticeable improvements in all areas from our previous game, with everyone functioning a lot better as a team. The girls’ hard work paid off and we managed to keep the other team from getting any runs home in two of the three innings. Some highlights of the game were Willow Stewart-Rattray’s amazing catch to get an out and Chloe Porter’s strong batting that moved everyone around the field. Thank you to Lara Maione from Year 3 for making up our numbers and also taking a fantastic catch. Jasmine Ledgard and Lydia Smalls (Coaches)

Water Polo

Open A – Saints 4 defeated by St Ignatius 5
Open A played against St Ignatius for a second time this term and were determined to fight back harder right from the opening whistle. All girls did an amazing job playing their best game for the season. Unfortunately, the score once again did not reflect this, with Saints losing by 1. Special mention to Antonia Kirsten-Parsch for playing a whole game as goalie and doing an amazing job! Hopefully, next week we can get a win. This week’s best player was Nicolette Miller. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Open B – Saints 11 defeated Wilderness 2
The team worked well together and are continuously building their skills, especially with strong offence and defence. The players were able to set up plays, which led to many opportunities to score and led Saints to victory. We put on constant pressure and tight defence throughout the match. Well done and good luck for next week. This week’s best player was Ebony-Jade Nash-Smith. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Year 7/8 – Saints 16 defeated St Ignatius 6
Saints continued their winning streak, keeping their undefeated streak alive. After a slow start to the match the girls persisted to achieve a great outcome. Goal scorers were Matilda Braithwaite 1, Olivia Goldsmith 3, Fiona Lethbridge 4, Lucy Young 2, Poppie Goldsmith 2, Saskia Jonats 1, Alyssa Woolley 3. Olivia Goldsmith (Year 8)

Rowing

Round The Island is always a much anticipated event for the senior crews as it is our first race when we are able to see competition for the upcoming season; and with the not-so-perfect conditions it would reveal the stronger crews capable of dealing with such weather. The first IV did surprising well and came home with the first win ever for an SPGS IV! We persevered through the winds and rain and kept our eyes on the prize, making us realise the importance of our eight trainings a week! We are even more excited about the upcoming season and expect great results to come. Khandee Swaeney

The Intermediate A crew, consisting of Eve Habel (stroke), Olivia Law, Zoe Vine Hall and Sarah Carrodus, performed very well on the weekend, considering the horrendous conditions. The girls did especially well during the middle section of the race where they closed the gap between them and Scotch. In the end, through their endurance, quick catches and desire to win, the girls came out on top, beating Scotch College by 20 seconds. Amy Carrodus

The race on Saturday morning, Round The Island, was extremely tough. The B crew of Emily Brophy, Brooke Weymouth, Neve McCormack and Amy Rice rowed very well, considering the poor conditions. Unfortunately, there were some malfunctions at the beginning of the race, with one of the riggers coming unclipped and breaking at the 1500m mark. Brooke, Neve and Amy were very determined and strong to keep pushing and I am very proud of their efforts as they kept giving 100% pressure while Emily tried to fix her rigger. Even though there was a very strong headwind at the beginning and end of the race, the girls managed very well, especially as there were only 3 girls rowing. I am sure that this race was a learning experience for the crew and hopefully the next Round The Island race will be more successful. Annabelle Langley

Softball

Open A – Saints 4 defeated by Immanuel 8
The team was faced with a tough game this week as it was the shield game, but each girl was strong against the opponents. Aroha Munroe performed a well-placed hit that scored a home run, giving Saints a lead in the first innings. As outfield, Anna Cross took a great catch that looked very impressive and helped the team get another out. Overall, we have had a great season, only just falling short of winning the shield. I would like to thank Michelle and all of the girls for making my last season of softball my best one yet. Georgia Naughton (Captain)

Open B – Saints 18 defeated Walford 6
The Open B team fought through the cold, wet and windy weather to defeat Walford. Saturday’s game showed that the girls can use their skills from training and use them in a game. Overall, the girls played a very entertaining game and our best players were India Deere for catching two incredible fly balls and Olivia Goldsmith for also showing some great plays in the field. Lucinda Tierney (Year 10)

Open C – Saints 14 defeated St John’s 7
It was clear throughout the game that all the girls’ batting and fielding skills have improved immensely over the season. Well done to Amelia Pudney and Lauren Porter for outstanding pitching under the pressure of St John’s great batting skills and to Kellie Bested and Poppie Goldsmith for their fielding skills and working together to get many of the opponent runners out. Olivia May and Mimi Long (Coaches)

Tennis

All games cancelled due to weather

Volleyball

Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Concordia 3
Unfortunately, the Open A girls couldn’t get the job done against a strong Concordia team. The girls played extremely well and were very unlucky not to win, as in the first 2 sets each set was only determined by a few points. Although we finished the season off with a loss, I’m still extremely proud of where this team has come over the past 4 years. The girls have accomplished so much and have gone well above my initial expectations. The girls have been an absolute pleasure to coach. I’ve coached a lot of teams before but none that have been this supportive and appreciative of each other. I wish them all the best for the future and hope they all continue playing! Cambell Baker (Coach)

Open B – Saints 3 defeated Concordia 0
Yet again, the Open B girls did an excellent job and it’s a shame that the season has come to an end, as the girls are really starting to play some consistent volleyball, which is highlighted by them remaining undefeated throughout Term 4. All the girls have been an absolute pleasure to coach and I hope they all continue playing next year! Cambell Baker (Coach)

Open C – Saints 0 defeated by Concordia 3
The Open C girls had a tough game, with a number of regular players unavailable, which made things difficult from the start. However, the girls played really well and gave it their all in every set. Special thanks to the Middle School girls who filled in. We have one more game this weekend; let’s finish the year off with a win! Cambell Baker (Coach)

Open D – Saints 0 defeated by Concordia 3 (16-25, 12-25, 19-25)
In a tough game, much of the scoring was due to errors from both teams, making it hard for our girls to get into any sort of rhythm for the game. Asha Short and Nicola Jones’ serving was excellent in all three sets, and Charlene Lee did an excellent job to regularly get under the ball to return it to the other side. Saints’ energy and talking was lacking in the first and second set, which resulted in some simple errors, but once they started talking and moving in the third set, their play improved. If the girls start with energy and lots of communication next week, they should play well for their final game of the season. Annika Winter (Teacher)

Middle A – Saints 2 defeated Concordia 1 (16-25, 15-21, 25-23)
A fantastic game by all of the girls this week and huge congratulations to everyone for the fantastic win! This game certainly tested the girls but they were able to step up to the challenge and come out on top! Every girl displayed great skills and worked very well as a team, keeping up the encouragement. Well done, girls, on a fantastic game! Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Middle B – Saints 1 defeated by Concordia 2 (25-22, 22-25, 16-25)
The Middle B team started off their game this week at a very high standard and energy level, utilising many 3 hit opportunities as practised on Thursday! Some great sets up by Matilda McCormack, Jessica and Sarah Wishart, as well as fantastic spikes by Chloe Deieso. Poppy Kirwan also did some great backing up and digging in the first set. The serving was consistent throughout; however, the girls were frazzled when their opponents gained points and they unfortunately lost their momentum and lead ahead. Looking forward to another game next week where the energy can continue! Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Middle C – Saints 2 defeated Concordia 1 (25-16, 27-29, 25-22)
What a game for the Middle Cs this week! The energy level was higher than usual, which is amazing to see, and assisted in our win against Concordia. Lola Dimond played her best game to date, doing some great backing up of the other players, and strong serves. After winning the first set, the second set had some great set ups for 3 hits, and worked up to an intense and pointy end, where the girls unfortunately lost 27-29. But all hope was not lost – the girls came back in the last set to win the game! Great improvements from everyone; well done to all. Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Basketball

Middle C1 – Saints 34 defeated Pembroke 12
Great win for the girls this week. They started the match with great intensity and pressure down the court, and this continued until the final whistle. This was the final match for this team for the term and once again it was a real team effort with five individual point scorers. Well done to all girls; we hope to see you all out at basketball again next year. Vanessa Brooks (Coach)

Middle C2 – Saints 24 defeated by Concordia 40
The team showed tremendous improvement in the loss to Concordia. The ball movement and team defence enabled them to remain very competitive for the entire game. All seven players played really well. Hopefully, they can finish the season next week with a win. Keep up the good work. Peter Krantis (Coach)

Beach Volleyball

As a reward for an outstanding year, the Middle A Volleyball team (with some additional players) travelled to Glenelg to participate in a Volleyball SA, Beach Volleyball Carnival. It was a windy day, making play difficult, with strong hitting required into the wind and then adjusting with a strong breeze behind. Matches were 14 minutes in duration, with both teams progressing the quarter final stage with 4 wins each.

Both teams won their 1/4 match and were drawn opposite each other in the semis, meaning that if both won they would face each other in the final, and that is exactly what happened.

Congratulations to all players who had a fun and successful day, finishing with the Gold and Silver Medals.

Softball – Year 6/7 Knockout

Saints proceeded to the State semi-finals with a convincing 17-5 win against Concordia. Some strong hitting and base running in the first innings saw Saints record 7 runs and then be backed up with some good pitching from Amelia Pudney and good fielding, restricting Concordia to 1 run. Angela Mourtzios, Harriett Gilroy, Stephanie Smalls and Kellie Bested all batted very well and, along with Amelia and Holly Cardone, also pitched very well.

Enews – Week 4, Term 4 2016

Issue no. 33
Enews-banner

From the Principal
JuliaShea_web-200x300

Last night Chiverton Lawn was abuzz as parents and members of our wider community joined with staff and our girls to celebrate 2016. Whilst the evening was primarily designed for everyone to catch up and reflect on yet another year, it provided the perfect opportunity to launch the School’s new Strategic Plan, A New Vision – Towards 125. This plan maps out the next three years for the School, culminating in the celebration of our 125th anniversary in 2019.

In it, you will find a number of priorities across the seven integral elements of our School and listed under each of those priorities there are a number of goals. But a goal without a plan is nothing more than a wish. So, at School level, sitting behind each of those goals is a detailed list of activities and measurements that will see us not only reach those goals but justify their completion. At the start of each of the next three years I will communicate to you the areas of the strategic plan that will be our focus for that calendar year and then similarly in December, I will report back to you on our progress. And quite rightly my accountability therefore becomes much more transparent.

I would like to thank all of you who contributed to the plan’s development via completing the survey earlier this year or attending one of our many forums. I wanted dynamic strategic planning – placing emphasis on the people dimension of planning – because your commitment will be key to the successful implementation of future strategies. So your input was sincerely appreciated. I encourage you to download the plan.

drink-enews

As you would be aware, Dr Tom Nehmy conducted a review of well-being programs and structures earlier this year. Tom made a number of recommendations, two of which were as follows:

  • Specific allocated time slots should be provided for pastoral care, and these should be held as sacrosanct, unadulterated periods for both structured well-being initiatives and unstructured time to get to know and connect with students.
  • Pastoral care time should be distinguished from ‘home group’ administration time. And since a roll call at 8.30am in Home Group is superfluous given the roll is taken in each lesson, Lesson 1 should commence first and pastoral care time should be moved to Lesson 4, immediately prior to lunch.

In line with these recommendations the following will be trialled across the Middle and Senior Schools in 2017:

  • The day structure will continue to be made up of six 50 minute lessons and a 40 minute Home Group time
  • Home Group time will move from its current 8.30am start to the end of Lesson 4. Lesson 1 will commence at 8.30am. The day structure will be as follows:
      • Lesson 1: 8.30 – 9.20am
      • Lesson 2: 9.20 – 10.10am
      • Recess: 10.10 – 10.35am
      • Lesson 3: 10.35 – 11.25am
      • Lesson 4: 11.25am – 12.15pm
      • Home Group: 12.15 – 12.55pm
      • Lunch: 12.55 – 1.50pm
      • Lesson 5: 1.50 – 2.40pm
      • Lesson 6: 2.40 – 3.30pm
  • This allows Home-Group time to morph into lunch time, achieving greater flexibility around activities, including the opportunity to leave the school grounds.
  • Recess moves to earlier in the day which will prove beneficial for the increasing number of girls who have rehearsals and training prior to School.
  • The Well-being Program will be delivered during the sacrosanct Home Group lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As you will see in our strategic plan, the development of a proactive, strategic, theoretically sound and evidence-based approach to school-based well-being and pastoral care is a key priority for 2017.
  • The 40 minute period on Mondays will continue to rotate through a cycle of full School assembly, sub-school assembly and House meetings. All of these will be student-led.
  • A full School Chapel service will be held on Wednesdays as per current practice.
  • The combined Middle School/Senior School Chapel that previously occurred on Thursdays will move to Fridays. When not attending Chapel, this time will be used to hear from relevant guest speakers and presenters. The girls will have significant input into the program of speakers.
  • The Chapel is now fully air conditioned so remains a comfortable environment no matter the time of day.
  • Choral Night is a Saints Girls tradition. Again, as per current practice, rehearsals for Choral Night will override this timetable for the two weeks prior to the event.

Junior school will continue to have assembly at the start of the day on Friday to allow parents to attend and then return to work.

As I mentioned, we will trial the new structure for 2017 and seek feedback in Term 4 next year.

As part of seeing this year through, rehearsals for Carols in the Cathedral and Presentation Night are well underway. The quality of music at both of these events will be stunning. We are fortunate to have two wonderful Music teachers leading the way and their passion and expertise has rightly been acknowledged by their peers. I would like to congratulate Sari Noble on being recognised for her ‘long and noteworthy service’ by the Association of Heads of Music in Non-Government Schools, and Sally Rounsevell, who has been nominated and shortlisted for ‘mentor teacher of the year’ by the University of Adelaide. High praise indeed for two exceptional classroom practitioners.

Year 5 Production: The Little Mermaid

the-little-mermaid-enews

Accolades are still pouring in about the amazing Year 5 production of The Little Mermaid performed on Thursday and Friday last week. The girls have worked enthusiastically for over a term to produce the musical as part of their inquiry unit, All the World’s A Stage. The students looked at the role and responsibilities connected with a production, different types of performances and even enjoyed learning about Shakespeare and how so much of that vernacular is still used in our spoken English today.

I think the absolute commitment to, and enjoyment of, this production was evident on every girl’s face. Many people commented on the ‘professionalism’ of the performances and, of course, the wonderful sets and colourful costumes superbly coordinated and sourced by Olivia Coulter. As a teacher, I think that one of the most gratifying things to come out of this unit of work, other than the learning, is the confidence and self-esteem that it engenders in each and every child. Whether a student is a fan of musical theatre or not, the development and growth in public speaking and performance skills are obvious. The Year 5 musical has always been a highlight of the school year and many older girls look back with fondness on their musical whilst they were in Year 5.

The highlights were many but included lavish production numbers such as Under the Sea, She’s in Love, Part of Your WorldLes Poissons and, of course, the never-ending finale and bows.

Big congratulations to this wonderful group of performers who put so many smiles on the faces of our school community and visitors such as the 100+ children from Burnside Primary who left the Arts Centre humming the tunes. Again, a huge thank you to all the generous parents, grandparents and friends who lent their support. It was greatly appreciated. As the bard, William Shakespeare, said, ”All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one person in their time plays many parts.”

I think the Year 5s can now cherish the wonderful memories of this whole experience – the learning and the performance – and know that they all played their many parts with passion and commitment.

School Life in Japan – Reflections from our Student Exchange Program

japanese-exchange-enews

On 26 September six of us Saints girls went on a three week exchange to Japan. Bright and early, Aditi, Brooke, Isabella, Isobel, Khandee and I met at the airport for a short flight to Brisbane. Then we had our 9 hour haul to Japan. We were excited, nervous and very tired when we landed, but were picked up and taken to our soon-to-be school, Senzoku Gakuen. We met up here with our host families and off we went!

The very next morning, we were up bright and early to be at school by 8am. However, most of us lived about an hour away, so when I say early, I mean early! Our first day was busy; getting our school uniforms, finding our way around the school and the constant language barrier and translation we faced were all too tiring… we all slept well that night!

The first week was good. We found our feet at Senzoku and figured our way around the school, how to use the vending machines and get to know the class times. Each class was one hour and 5 minutes, with a 10 minute break after each one as a replacement for recess. There were five lessons a day, followed by after-school activities that ran to 6pm each night.

During our second week we started going to after-school activities, such as tea ceremony club, kendo, judo, track and field, volleyball, or model UN; it was all in English and this is where we met most of our returnee friends. Returnees are students who have lived overseas and are fluent in English. Finally, a place to relax. Soon enough, we were all begging to trade in our Japanese history and Ancient Japanese Language class for returnee English! These classes were interesting; they were all taught in English and much like the classes we have here at Saints. All of the other classes were taught in Japanese, in the style of chalk and talk, although the only person who did the talking was the teacher. There was very little discussion or interaction between teacher and student throughout the lessons.

We sat through many of these classes and before we knew it we were in our final week of our time at Senzoku. This went quickly for all of us, and by Friday we were wanting to take the vending machines, the breaks between lessons and the uniforms home. We can all say that our Senzoku experience was fun, and definitely one we will never forget!

Year 10 Girls gain insights into job interviews

year-10-interviews-enewsAs part of their Personal Learning Plan all Year 10 students took part in a practice interview on Monday 31 October in the Senior Resource Centre. This task required students to prepare a letter of application and resume and to attend an interview with a potential employer. Although the girls were nervous and some approached their interview with a great deal of trepidation, the experience was certainly one that was very beneficial and is a life skill that has many other applications. The impressive way that the girls approached the experience was noted by all of the employers.

Thanks must go to our volunteer employers, all of whom give up their time willingly, some year after year, to provide the girls with this most valuable experience. This year I would like to thank the following people: Andrew Rosser, Tony Aykroyd, Megan McCormack, Stuart Manson, Caroline O’Keife, Teresa Dwyer, Courtney Morcombe, Elizabeth Tyson, Beba Brunt and Vaiju Joshi.

Open A – Saints 25 defeated by Seymour 36

The final match was competitive game for the Saints Open A side. It is fantastic to see the improvement over the past term displayed in order to finish a successful season. Leading at half-time, the team were able to utilise every possession and turnover in order to score. I would like to thank the girls for making my last season of basketball memorable. I wish Chelsea Marchetti and the rest of the basketball program good luck for next year. Josephine Dal Pra (Captain)

Water Polo

Open A – Saints 7 drew with Wilderness 7

This week the Open A team played a very close match and persisted with a strong defence line putting pressure on their players. We were given opportunities to score which led to success from our set plays. Saints worked hard until the last second, with the intensity-building leading to a draw. Saints continued to show their good sportsmanship throughout the whole game. The girls are continuously improving and learning from week to week. Good luck for next week’s game. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Open B – Saints 12 defeated Walford 1
The team showed very strong defensive pressure throughout the game and the girls were determined from the start to play a successful game. Saints constantly maintained a fair play and good sportsmanship approach despite being tested by the other team. The girls continually dominated throughout the game, taking advantage of every scoring opportunity and finishing with a final score of 12-1. With continued focus on defensive pressure the team will undoubtedly improve and be successful. Best player: Thandi Murada. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Year 7/8 – Saints 10 defeated Wilderness 7
The Year 7-8 team added another fantastic and well-earned win to their winning streak, which has lasted the entire year. Our goal scorers were Fiona Lethbridge (3 goals), Matilda Braithwaite and Hattie Maerschel (2 goals), Olivia Goldsmith, Poppie Goldsmith and Alyssa Woolley (1 goal each). Mention must go to one of our goalies of the night, Saskia Jonats, as she was stopping most shots and balls that came to her and was fending off the attacks that came with it. Overall, it was a good game and let’s hope this winning streak continues! Fiona Lethbridge (Year 8)

Junior Volleyball

Year 6: Saints 0 defeated by Seymour Green 3
This week the girls were confronted with tough defensive volleyball from the opposing Seymour. However, the girls had greatly improved their ball skills, such as accuracy of serves and setting the ball well. Once again, the girls have shown a great deal of improvement, with the potential of a win in future games. Best player this week was Izzy Gilroy who showed a real effort in offensively setting the ball and winning a number of points. Well done to all girls. Abbey Goodwin

Rowing

The Inter A crew, consisting of Rachel Kameniar (stroke), Olivia Law, Brooke Weymouth and Sarah Carrodus, raced extremely well in their first 1500m race. With the poor conditions and inexperience of the distance, the girls pulled off an outstanding time and rowed extremely well. Although the 3rd place result wasn’t what we were after, the girls are now even more determined to get that 1st place. If the girls can nail their technique, it looks to be a very successful season ahead. Amy Carrodus

The Inter B crew of Eve Habel, Zoe Vine Hall, Emily Brophy and Amy Rice had their first regatta for the season. Considering the poor conditions, they did extremely well. The heat was very tough but the girls managed to pull through, winning the heat. Given it was their first time doing a 1500m race, they did exceptionally well. The second race which was the A final had very strong crews with both of the top inter crews from Saints. We did not have a very solid start as the oars got caught in between the buoys as the boat was not straight at the start because the wind blew all of the crews out of their lane. Despite this, we raced strongly to finish 5th and managed to keep pushing for the 500m sprint. The regatta on a whole was very successful and a good start to a great season. Annabelle Langley

On Saturday Scarlett Hocking (Stroke), Hannah Keough (3 Seat), Paris Robinson (2 Seat) and Ellie Anderson (Bow), with Charlotte Creek (Cox), rowed really well for their fast 1km race for this season. The conditions were not good but this didn’t stop the girls from achieving their best. They came first in their heat, meaning that they would go into the A Crew Final where they finished a commendable 3rd. The girls tried their hardest and it was tough competition. They need to work on keeping the boat balanced, even when it is windy. Charlotte Creek

On Saturday Sophie Johnson, Michelle Rupert, Hannah Freeman and Bella Bernardi raced a heat and a final. Even though we got an oar stuck under the boat and came last in the heat, we still won the final. I am so proud of the girls for coming back from a terrible first race to a great second one. Basketball

Middle C1 – Saints had a bye

Middle C2 – Saints 14 defeated by Woodcroft 31
A fantastic start by Saints this week, applying pressure from the beginning and leading on the scoreboard for the first ten minutes. Our run down the court was effective and our defensive pressure caused many turnovers. Just before half-time, Woodcroft started gaining momentum. Unfortunately, this momentum continued into the second half and we were unable to convert our multiple scoring opportunities, despite a number of good plays. It was great to see six individual point scorers for us this week, with our highest scorer being Ebony Lohe. Vanessa Brooks (Coach).

The Premier League and Premier League Reserves concluded on Monday evening with wins again to both teams. Saints were finally able to celebrate claiming the A Grade shield for the first time since 2001 and breaking Walford’s 9-year reign. The B Grade have also had an outstanding year, finishing equal second with Immanuel. Congratulations and thanks to Olivia Teh (Year 12) who has been a wonderful member of the team and a great captain in 2016. Of the 8 players in these 2 teams, 6 have been undefeated in singles throughout the year and Yasmin Glazbrook (number 1 in A Grade) has claimed the IGSSA singles trophy as the most outstanding player. As Olivia Teh is the only player leaving and with some stronger young players seeking selection, Saints will hopefully be able to continue their success next year and beyond. From the Director of Early Learning

Creating and Sustaining Quality Learning

ProKate-Mountviding leading, innovative early childhood education has been an ongoing commitment of the ELC. The educators are continually striving to deliver best practice across the centre. This cycle of continual improvement based on deep reflection is embedded in our practice. For several years we have been inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to learning. With several staff experiencing first-hand this Italian pedagogy, we are able to authentically adjust the principles to blend in our Australian setting and culture. St Peter’s Girls ELC holds a very strong image of the child and of childhood. The value we place on giving visibility to this both within and beyond the ELC gives value to the learning that actually takes place. We are beyond being viewed as just looking after little children; the seriousness of our pedagogy lays the foundation for every child’s learning journey and, in particular, their position in society of being a significant person with so much to offer. We do not see the child for what they cannot do, but rather for what they can do. I am continually challenged when I hear adults talk about all that they have to do for the child – why is it that we cannot see firstly what the child has the capacity to do herself or himself.

During the October holidays my staff had the privilege of a visit from Professor Carla Rinaldi from Reggio Emilia. Those of you that have followed our ELC journey over the years would know that this would have been an incredible honour. Carla was Adelaide’s Thinker in Residence in 2012 – 2013. Following this she made several recommendations to the State, including the development of Prototype Services that could act as models for services endeavouring to incorporate the Reggio Emilia approach in their schools/workplaces. This includes not just a few schools and preschools, but also the Art Gallery and a group of Architects. St Peter’s Girls Early Learners’ Centre is one of these prototypes and regularly meets with the other prototypes to share our research. We follow the principle of Educator as Researcher to deepen our understandings of our practices and beliefs. We continually read, theorise, collaborate, share, question and endeavour to articulate our findings, wonderings and practice.

kate-enews-story

It was a morning of pure joy having Carla in our centre: for her to view the marriage of architecture and pedagogy, to see our environment so alive and transparent, our strong image of child, and emphasis on community with relationships at the centre. She loved all of the traces of years gone by and, in particular, loved the Friendship Garden and what it represented to us. Carla walked through each section of the centre, asking questions, provoking our thinking and challenging us. She delighted in our projects of inquiry and the journey we are travelling on. In particular, she highlighted our advocacy for the very young child and how beautifully we catered for two year olds in our centre. Carla commented:

“This ELC has to be respected. It is a wonderful place; it is so alive. It is a treasure.”

As we all sat together at our big, long table Carla congratulated us on our authentic work and our trust in ourselves to be so proactive with our continually changing pedagogy, which is driven by our research. She told us about the essence of the centre that she could feel. It was not something she could really explain in words; rather, a feeling she had! Her words of encouragement and provoking questions have given us a burst of excitement going into Term 4 in the ELC – it was indeed one of my proudest moments since being Director in this beautiful learning facility. I congratulate my team of educators for being part of this exciting event!

The Universal Nature of Mathematics

The Year 2 girls became incredibly curious about our Central Idea, ‘Mathematics is a universal language that is organised using symbols and operations’, and began their investigations by discovering and exploring the mathematical patterns that can be found in nature and in man-made artistic forms. The girls recorded their own patterning investigations using the iPad app, iMovie, and then discussed their observations, made connections and posed further questions for investigating in the class journal. The class journal became a vital tool for reporting on and collating the findings in specialist Music, Visual Art and Physical Education lessons as the investigation evolved to find ways Mathematics underpins these art-forms.

universal-maths-image

Each student also used an individual journal to record her own mathematical journey, explore ideas, investigate, conduct experiments and research and develop theories. Photographs, videos and time-lapse allowed students to express their findings using a visual medium. Investigations were designed to gain a deeper understanding of the Central Idea through the three lines of inquiry;

  • how people use Mathematics,
  • patterns, symbols and operations, and
  • the universal nature of Mathematics,

By focussing learning in this way students were able to challenge their thinking and conduct research to support their theories.

This Mathematics investigation engaged students in meaningful explorations of the way Mathematics underpins social structures in our world. Student-led investigation allowed students to make connections between mathematical structure and symbols in currency around the world. They considered the language people use to describe, understand and express these mathematical understandings and concepts. Students have developed a deep and authentic understanding of the way Mathematics forms the foundation for beautiful art-forms, including Music, Dance and Visual Art.

moving your home loan to BankSA

PrintBankSA has partnered with St Peter’s Girls’ School in offering our school community a great fundraising opportunity. If you’re keen to take your support to the next level while potentially saving yourself money, then this program is for you. We’ve made it really easy to further support the School, while also making sure you’re getting the best possible service and a great deal on your home loan.

If you’ve been thinking about a new place for your home loan – either to get a better rate or if it’s just time for a change – then using your home loan to support St Peter’s Girls’ School is a great option.

Not only will you get a great rate with BankSA, but you’ll also be supporting St Peter’s Girls’ School, as each BankSA home loan allows us to make a charitable donation in your name of between $1,000 and $6,000. As the SPG Building Fund has DGR status, you may be entitled to claim a tax deduction as a result of this donation.

It’s that simple

  • The more home loan referrals… the more money BankSA will donate to the School
  • Donation paid at settlement of the home loan
  • Unlimited donation potential

Both St Peter’s Girls’ School and BankSA have a proud history in South Australia and a strong sense of community. Fostering partnerships like this enables us to support our school community and our School. By permitting BankSA to make a charitable donation in your name, you will be helping to ensure that we continue to foster girls who have a strong sense of self and who are independent, creative, critical thinkers, engaged and community-minded.

Rowing Update

senior-squad-for-season-16-17Over the school break the squad spent four days at a fitness camp on the River Murray in very difficult weather conditions. Normal training was complemented by indoor charades and some land-based fitness. Luckily, they did manage some good sessions on the water from which this stunning video was created.

Last Friday night was the Official Opening of the Rowing Season 2016-17 with Friends of Rowing putting on a BBQ at the school grounds. Over 120 people across Years 7 – 11 braved the cooler weather to acknowledge the season ahead. The Senior Squad were inducted with their exclusive visors whilst the Intermediates and Juniors received their caps.

Unfortunately, the first regatta has been cancelled on 29 October, with 5 November at West Lakes now being the opener. Looking forward to seeing as many parents and other family members there as possible.

St Peter’s Girls Rowing goes viral!

At the recent Rowing Camp in Murray Bridge, the team were fortunate enough to have their training session recorded by Property Services staff member, Liam Blanden, on his drone.
The photo was then shared by the World Rowing Official Instagram page and was ‘liked’ by almost 3,000 people!

Year 10 Selwyn House Charity – The
Smith Family
smith-family-logo

Over the course of the year, the Year 10 Selwyn Home Group has been working with The Smith Family charity as a part of our Service Learning.

The Smith Family is a national, independent charity empowering disadvantaged young Australians and supporting them through their education so that they can create better futures for themselves.

In particular, we have been involved with The Smith Family’s Bike Build programme. This programme recognises the fact that due to a lack of transportation options, many children are unable to get to school. The programme therefore aims to provide as many disadvantaged children as possible with bikes to enable them to get to school independently. We have been raising money to contribute to this programme. Our goal is to raise enough money to be able to provide five good quality bikes to The Smith Family.

For our final fundraising activity this year, we are (appropriately) going to be riding bikes.
On Friday 18 November, from 7am until 7pm, there will be two stationary bikes set up on the steps of the Arts Centre. The girls of 10 Selwyn will ride as far as our fundraising determines. For every $2 raised, we will ride one kilometre. The more donations we receive, the further we ride.

Donations will be collected by 10 Selwyn in the Tuesday Home Groups leading up to the event. There will also be an opportunity to give donations on the day, as well as a cupcake stall with all proceeds going towards this cause.

Any contributions to this cause would be very much appreciated, so please donate and help 10 Selwyn to cycle and The Smith Family to break the cycle of poverty!

Yours sincerely,

Year 10 Selwyn

Basketball

Open A – Saints 30 defeated Walford 17open-a-basketball
A well fought out match resulted in a win for the Open A side. After a four year drought the team was able to make the most of each possession and make crucial moves under pressure to produce a score against the rival side. The whole team should be commended for their efforts as they will definitely be remembered. I look forward to a competitive match against Seymour next week. Josephine Dal Pra (Captain)

Junior Teeball

Saints 21 defeated Wilderness 14
The Year 4/5 teeball team had an amazing first game. It was an outstanding performance by all students; managing to still win with only 7 players.  A massive thank you to Lara Maione for filling in for our team, showing lots of potential for the future. Jasmine Ledgard and Lydia Smalls (Coaches)

Water Polo

Open A – Saints 2 defeated by Pembroke 5
The team worked well together using strong defence to keep Pembroke’s goals to a minimum. We were able to maximise our opportunities and set up many attempts at goals throughout the game, but again were unlucky not to score from them. Everyone played extremely well for the second game of the season and showed great potential for games to come. Best players for this week were Carys Jones and Antonia Kirsten-Parsch. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Open B – Saints 4 defeated by Mercedes 7
Saints Girls this week competed in a close game against Mercedes. Having numerous new comers to water polo this term, the girls are already showing positive signs by working cohesively and effectively. With a new team and developing skills, the team worked cooperatively to create optimal opportunities to score, but unfortunately were defeated. I look forward to the rest of the season. Sarah Richards (Captain)

Year 7/8 – Saints 9 defeated Pembroke 5
The team applied skills and energy from training to our game and great teamwork to come out with a win. Fiona Lethbridge and Harriet Maerschel played strongly in defence, which helped bring the ball down into attack. A well played game by everyone, keeping us undefeated for the year!! Scorers: Olivia Goldsmith, Fiona Lethbridge 2, Poppie Goldsmith, Saskia Jonats, Alyssa Woolley 4. Olivia Goldsmith (Year 8)

Softball

Open A – Saints 13 defeated Pulteney 5
The girls had another exceptional game on the weekend, with another good win. Both batting and fielding was done well as a team. Jasmine Ledgard, Aroha Munroe and Imogen Parker all batted very well, each scoring a home run. Each girl worked together to gain easy outs and runs home, which all contributed to the win. The team has improved over the year and can hopefully come away with a win in our last game. Georgia Naughton (Captain)

Open C – Saints 12 defeated by St Ignatius 14
This week the girls proved that training is key! After our batting work on Tuesday afternoon everyone was smart at the plate, not swinging wildly and making sure to focus on the ball. Special mention to Alice Girdler for her big hit into the outfield. In the third innings Amelia Pudney came into pitch, through which we were able to see everyone’s fielding abilities too; well done, Amelia! Unfortunately, ‘time and game’ was called and we were marginally defeated in a close match. Mimi Long (Coach)

Volleyball

Open A – Saints 3 defeated Pembroke 0
In an exciting game against Pembroke, Saints were able to come out victorious. Getting off to a strong start in the opening set, the girls gained momentum through the game. It was great to see so much movement around the court, particularly whenever the opposition hit a free ball. Covering was done well, and it was fantastic to see so many efforts at blocking and spiking. As always, enthusiasm was very high and it is good to see that all the girls are so supportive of each other. The improvement over the season bodes well for our final game against Concordia. Congratulations must go to Rachael Disney and Georgia Howe for particularly good games. Georgia Howe and Mila Loechel (Captains)

Open B – Saints 2 defeated Pembroke 1
The Open B girls did an excellent job which was set up by our consistent serving and passing that were the keys to victory. The girls were strong across the net, ending many rallies with spikes. A great start to the term winning our first 2 games! Cambell Baker (Coordinator)

Open C – Saints 1 defeated by Pembroke 12
The team played a great game on the weekend despite their loss. The girls started the game with great energy and enthusiasm throughout the whole court. Good serving and scrambling around the court resulted in comfortably winning the first set. Unfortunately, we lost the next two sets as the girls lost some momentum when their opponent, Pembroke, started serving well and returned ball with strong spikes. Despite this, the girls should be proud of their efforts and look forward to next week’s game. Victoria Neale (Coach)

Open D – Saints did not play

Middle A – Saints 3 defeated Pembroke 0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-16)
Fantastic job on the weekend, girls, with another win! Some fantastic 3 hits throughout the game, with all players on court focussed and enthusiastic. Brooke Elliott and Tahlia Towers served really well, making it difficult for the other team to get it back over. Ellana and I gave each team player some points they did well, which we believe is important feedback for the girls. Well done on the overall win and winning each set! Keep it up Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Middle B – Saints 3 defeated Pembroke 0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-22)
The Middle Bs won each set of the game, with our focus to have more 3 hits and energy, and by the end of the game the girls really improved and had some great hits over, with all team players contributing. Nicolette Miller and Georgina Bafile served really well, and Amy Li and Jiayi Wang played a great game throughout. Well done again, girls. Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Middle C – Saints 0 defeated by Westminster 3 (9-25, 16-25, 14-25)
The girls played a great game this week against a tough opponent. Throughout the game the girls worked hard on all aspects of their game and played very well as a team. Maddison Tilley-Brooks and Lola Diamond displayed some great serving and we saw excellent moving and back up from Sarah Wishart and Katelin Calandro. We are very proud of the improvements the girls have made over the past few weeks and look forward to seeing more! Well done, girls! Ellana Welsby and Eliza Falconer (Coaches)

Basketball

Middle C1 – Saints 30 defeated Seymour 17
The girls continued on their form from their first game to post another convincing win. The team controlled the game from start to finish. Special mention to Emma Matheson who was very aggressive taking the ball to the basket. Overall, a great team performance. Peter Krantis (Coach)

Middle C2 – Saints 4 defeated by Pembroke C2 36
At training we have been working on applying defensive pressure and having a go at the ball with strong hands. I was happy to see the majority of girls execute these skills in the game. Thank you to Ashley Piper for filling in for this team, for providing constant drive down the court and scoring our only two goals. Well done to Mahala Truscott for her ability to dribble down the court into attack and consistently apply pressure in defence, causing many turnovers. Special mention to Natacha Zisos Troupakis for consistently getting rebounds and for having numerous shots at goal, something she has been working hard at during trainings. Vanessa Brooks (Coach).
