Mid-Year Receptions in class of their own

As Term 3 rounds the half-way mark, we’re pleased to report that our Mid-Year Receptions are well and truly feeling right at home in the “big school”.

Many of them are “Old Scholars” of the ELC, and their ability to settle into school life so quickly is a testament to the comprehensive transition work carried out in both the ELC and the Junior School.

We are in a fortunate and unique position where girls can start in the ELC as two year olds, then progress through schooling all the way to Year 12 on the one campus, surrounded by the same friendly faces.

We caught up with the Mid-Year Receptions and their teachers to see how they’re travelling:

Their incredible progress just goes to show what sets us apart at Saints Girls.

For parents of Receptions starting school in 2018, St Peter’s Girls is holding a special Twilight Tour on Monday 4 September at 5pm. Families from outside of the School are most welcome to attend and can book here.

We look forward to providing more updates on our Mid-Year Receptions as they continue their schooling journey!

From the Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School

Kate MortimerThe mid-way point of any term is the time for us all; students, staff and parents, to reflect upon the events that have so far occurred, as well as re-focus on those that are yet to come.

Last week, more than 80 Year 11 and 12 students attended the Careers Networking Breakfast and were fortunate to spend the morning gaining valuable insight and advice from a wide variety of Old Scholars. The girls spoke with doctors, solicitors, engineers, event managers, accountants, physiotherapists and business owners. It is vital that we provide the girls with opportunities such as these. Not only to assist with the selection of a university course, but more importantly to listen to women who have achieved success in their chosen fields, after facing numerous setbacks.

It is crucial that the girls understand the path to their chosen profession may not always be one travelled seamlessly upon a straight road. Rather, at times, there will be wrong turns and dead ends. If their goal is to travel from the City to Glenelg – this may in fact be via Darwin. My sincere thanks to Megan McCormack, Fiona McGregor and Karen Alderson for their work in organising this event.

Last week also included the Senior Drama Production. The girls performed Wednesday through to Friday and this included their moderated performance. The acting from the cast was superb and the girls brought the scenes and characters to life with memorable performances.

This week Year 10 have started planning for their Outdoor Education camp to the Flinders Ranges. Any outdoor education experience is one where the intent is not only to challenge the girls, but to provide them with an opportunity to forge stronger relationships within their year group and with their teachers. Map reading and planning tent groups, which we did this week, was definitely a pre-camp challenge. I will be attending camp for the week, and am looking forward to watching the girls engage with the challenge of physical activities, lack of comfort and zero access to their mobile phones.

Finally, some news on the structure of Home Groups within the Senior School for the coming years. It would be of no surprise to many that connections within the school setting are crucial. Considerable research demonstrates that emotions and relationships with teachers can facilitate or impede students’ academic engagement, confidence, work ethic, commitment to learning, happiness and ultimately their school success.

It is our role to ensure that we provide an environment where a member of staff is able to truly connect and get to know each girl. This is possible when the staff member continues with the girls as they progress into the next year. Therefore, staff who are currently Home Group teachers for Year 10 and Year 11 students will remain with these girls for 2018 and 2019. These staff will be delivering weekly wellbeing content and engaging in 1:1 review interviews with the girls each term. This allows us to consistently set individual goals with each girl, then monitor and follow up on these. Simply, we are not at our best if we do not know each girl. This includes her strengths, weaknesses and developing specific long-term plans to assist in these areas.

Incredible success at National Plain English Speaking Award

W5 PESA 2On 14 August, I was fortunate enough to represent South Australia at the National Finals of the Plain English Speaking Award, held in Melbourne. The competition included a weekend of exploring Melbourne, seeing plays, and dinners with the Australia Britain Society. We also had the opportunity to attend a workshop with past international winners of the competition, which was incredible.

The actual competition was held in the National Gallery of Victoria, where there were 300 people present! Entrants faced three rounds: a prepared speech of eight minutes, a three minute interview on the speech and a three minute short-notice speech for which we had only four minutes to prepare. The topic of my prepared speech was ‘The Game-changer’ and I spoke about the Mabo Referendum. My short-notice speech was on the topic ‘Ignorance is Bliss’, and I touched upon the issue of racial privilege. There were prizes only for the winner and runner-up, so I was really thrilled to have placed second nationally! Although this competition was extremely challenging, especially since I was the youngest, it was absolutely amazing and definitely a memory I will treasure for years to come!

Vietnam Veterans share their stories with Year 8CDA

W5 Vietnam Veterans

On Tuesday 22 August, five Vietnam Veterans who participated first-hand in the Vietnam War, came to speak with 8CDA during Home Group. They provided us with an insight of the war through the Army, the Air Force and from a medic’s perspective of the war. We were all able to gain a great understanding of what went on, how they felt, how they helped out and what life was like living in war conditions. These five courageous men who travelled all the way from Australia to Vietnam and served our country from 1955 – 1975, taught us many valuable things about the Vietnam War of which we didn’t know. – Lily-Rose Spartalis

W5 Vietnam Veterans 2Being able to meet and actively interact with five Vietnam Veterans was definitely a worthwhile experience. They were able to tell us very in-depth stories of becoming part of the Australian Army or Air Force, fighting in Vietnam and the aftermath that resulted from such a traumatising experience. Overall, the experience gave 8 CDA the knowledge of the Vietnam War that would be unachievable to learn without the help from people with first-hand experiences. – Ailani Cox

The Vietnam veterans were very interesting as they shared the information of how they fought for our country and risked their lives to help people. The photos and information they showed us were really interesting and it was shocking to find out what they went through and how the memories and routines still affect their lives to this day. The thoughts going through their heads would have been horrific. I definitely think it was worth listening to because in that short 40 minutes I learnt so much about what they have been through and how much training and preparation went into it. It was extremely valuable and I am sure everyone in the class can say the same thing. – Charlotte Stewart

Welcome to the new Senior Rowing Coach

W5 Rowing

As pre-season training starts, we welcome Aleco Lanfranco in his new role as the Senior Rowing Coach at St Peter’s Girls’ School.

We asked Aleco to tell us a bit about himself:

“I first signed up for rowing in 2004 when I was at school at Prince Alfred College, and I went on to cox the 2008 PAC 1st VIII. I tried both rowing and coxing, however, due to being vertically challenged, I thought I would stick to coxing and see where it would take me. After graduating PAC, I spent the next seven years coxing at both Adelaide Rowing Club and Adelaide University Boat Club where I coxed various men’s crews in State and National competitions.

In addition to Club rowing, I have been involved with the South Australian Rowing Team for around 10 years as a coxswain and also as a coach. I retired from coxing in 2015 and have spent the past four years coaching at Seymour College as a senior rowing coach.

I look forward to working with everyone at St Peter’s Girls for a fun, competitive season.”

Year 4s enjoy connecting Book Week with Science Week

W5 Year 4

On Monday 14 August, the Year 4 students attended the Jeannie Baker Science and Literacy Learning experience at the Adelaide Botanic Garden and State Library of South Australia. This excursion linked with both Book Week and Science Week.

The students viewed an exhibition of the original artwork from ‘Circle’ by Jeannie Baker and also investigated life within the Adelaide Botanic Garden wetland habitat. They participated in a sensory walk between the Gardens and the State Library, where they observed the changing environment. At the State Library, the girls explored past, present and future landscapes by focusing on the Jeannie Baker text, ‘Belonging’.

It certainly was a full day and much learning and reflecting took place.

At the ‘Circle’ exhibition I learned how long it takes to do a collage. I found it fascinating to see all the different materials. If I saw Jeannie Baker, I would ask her how she gets all the minor details. – Anna Venning

Something interesting was that the water at the Botanic Garden wetlands is from Morialta and then the water goes to the Torrens River. – Charlotte Udall

I loved the ‘Circle’ exhibition because I got to understand what happens when you build over large areas. – Arabella Walsh

It is fascinating how many sounds you can hear if you take the time to listen and use your senses. I’m still wondering how a busy road changed to a calm and peaceful area not far away. – Jackie Balasis

We were inspired by the book ‘Belonging’ by Jeannie Baker. In my collage box, I made the beach out of blue wool, yellow paper, sand and rock. – Georgie Williams

Garage Sale Trail at St Peter’s Girls

Are you looking for a FREE, fun and social way to fundraise for your community group, House Charity, sports team or Cambodia Trip, and engage with our School community?

The City of Burnside is making Garage Sale Trail happen and St Peter’s Girls will be hosting stalls in our very own car park on Sunday 22 October 2017.

Our Parents’ and Friends’ Association will hold a BBQ on the day. It’s all part of the biggest reuse and community event in the country. Last year there were 15,000+ garage sales and stalls nationally, and over 320,000 shoppers and sellers. We would like to invite you to be involved – the best part is, it’s FREE! Garage Sale Trail is a national, council-powered program involving sustainability, creativity and fun. By organising communities around Australia to hold garage sales on one big weekend, Garage Sale Trail aims to provide a platform for local fundraising, promote waste education, enable community connections and inspire creativity.

Our School will play an integral role in the local Garage Sale Trail, which is exciting as these events generally raise $490 – $2,000 for schools. This is an opportunity to boost our fundraising efforts, creatively engage our community, empower our students and put sustainability in to practice.

• Anyone in our community can get involved and it’s FREE to register. Families who would like to come along with their car and sell items out of their boot are welcome, we just ask that you make a $20 donation to our Parents’ and Friends’ Association as it will be leading this event on the day.
• You can invest 100 percent of the profits you make from your garage sale back into your program or charity of choice.
• By participating in Garage Sale Trail, you get a sale page on garagesaletrail.com.au, and benefit from council promotion and media coverage around the event.
• You get access to loads of free materials to download and we will promote our sale locally.
• Registrations are now open, and you can also find tips and guides on having a successful fundraising event on the Garage Sale Trail website.
• St Peter’s Girls is already registered – to put your sale on the Garage Sale Trail, visit the website and register with our St Peter’s Girls’ Group Sale www.garagesaletrail.com.au.

Support the Year 11 Cambodia Trip

W3 Cambodia Raffle

A group of 18 Year 11s from St Peter’s Girls’ School and 18 Year 11 boys from Prince Alfred College are heading to Cambodia in the December holidays to help disadvantaged children and families. Our girls will be working hard to build a home or two for families in need, as well as spending time in the New Hope Orphanage getting to know the children and assisting them with their English. This trip only occurs once a year and it’s devoted to helping those in need.

This a life-changing trip for the students involved. Their parents pay for the trip itself. But as well as devoting their time to local families in need, students are required to collectively raise additional funds, of approximately $1000 per student, which will be donated to the two charities involved. Students are also asked to collect useful items such as comics to take with them for the children.

Last week our girls joined forces with the PAC boys involved and kicked off their fundraising by holding a sausage sizzle at the Rugby Intercol, which raised their first $500.

There is also a raffle where you have the chance to win four tickets in a private, catered suite at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre to your choice of The Chainsmokers, The Weeknd, Queen + Adam Lambert or GREASE. Raffle tickets for this great prize are available for $50 each.

Raffle Information

As well as these and future fundraisers, there is a Comic Book Drive. This idea was suggested to the girls from the directors at the New Hope Orphanage as the children would love to receive some new books, specifically comics, to help them learn and improve their English. If you or someone you know have any children’s books aimed at both boys and girls from infants through to adolescents, please bring them to the School and place them in the boxes either outside of Ms Mortimer’s office or by Student Services.

We thank you for your support to forever change the lives of these children and families in Cambodia.

Buy a raffle ticket and support a worthy cause

Tickets now on sale! Only 100 raffle tickets available via www.trybooking.com/RKUH. The prize is valued at up to $2500. The raffle will be drawn at lunchtime Thursday 31 August 2017. All money raised will go towards the Year 11 Cambodia Trip.

Lacrosse team scores prestigious trophy

Thursday 17 August
Under 15 Saints 14 defeated Wilderness 7
Saints U15 lacrosse team played a catch-up game against Wilderness as part of an IGSSA competition, with the chance to win the prestigious Judy Thurgood Trophy. The game was filled with a fun, friendly but competitive atmosphere, with plenty of cheering from parents, supporters and also the U11 Saints team. In the first half, the Saints girls were down 3-6; however, our flawless attackers scored the much-needed goals to place Saints well ahead in the second half. This win would not have been possible without the work of our amazing defenders such as Abbie Lisle (Year 9), Ellie Anderson (Year 9) and Kate Reade (Year 9), and the incredible work of goalie Isabelle Norman (Year 9). It was also pleasing to see our youngest team member, Willow Stewart-Rattray (Year 6), score a fantastic goal in the second half. I congratulate all of the girls as this is a result they should be very proud of, and I am looking forward to watching their skills develop further as the season comes closer to a conclusion. – Sophie Auricht (Captain)

WATER POLO

Congratulations to Nicolette Miller (Year 10) who has been selected in the State 16 and under Water Polo team which will complete in the National Championships in Hobart from 27 September to 2 October 2017.

JUNIOR BASKETBALL

Wednesday 16 August
Year 6 Blue – Saints 23 defeated Pembroke Blue 4
This week the team showed good passing in attack, finding a free player. Helen showed strength this week, driving to the basket and taking on defenders. Zoe Pool, Mathilda Thomas and Emma Pool worked hard in defence, managing to intercept well and move the ball forward. Georgia Parsons moved well in offence and defence, showing up in the right space at the right time. Willow Stewart-Rattray rebounded very well and scored the maximum 12 points. Bridgette Leach and Sophie Dansie chased well and made good position under the basket, and the girls were happy to play a team of similar height! – Sharon Leach (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 36 defeated Wilderness 12
The girls played a great game this week using team work to achieve a high score. Their well thought out and strategic passing helped them get the ball under the ring for a quick score. A special mention to Charlie Piper who scored 10 points and Jasmine Segredos who scored 12. – Josephine Dal Pra (Coach)

JUNIOR NETBALL

Year 2/3 – Saints 0 defeated by Seymour Blue 35
The Year 2/3 team played their second game of the season against Seymour. The Seymour side was a lot more experienced than Saints. However, our team improved each quarter and even managed to keep the opposition down to one goal in the third quarter. The girls’ defensive skills and leading are improving tremendously. – Emily Braggs (Coach)

SOCCER

Wednesday 16 August
Open A – Saints 1 drew with St Michael’s 1
The girls went into this game missing one of their key players, Talah Gobell; however, they did an outstanding job and worked hard to come out with a draw. Olivia Law’s hard work rewarded her with a great goal, which allowed Saints to equalise with St Michael’s. Unfortunately, the girls couldn’t walk away with a win, but they should be very proud of their efforts. – Dominique Rigby (Captain)

Year 7 – Saints 2 drew with Pembroke 2
The girls played extremely well. I was very proud of their performance. The opposition players were a lot bigger than our girls, but we matched them physically all game. While the game ended in a draw, we did deserve to win. – Kosta Bakopanos (Coach)

JUNIOR SOCCER

Friday 18 August
Year 6 – Saints 1 defeated by Pembroke Blue 3
A difficult game for the girls, as the other team was a strong opponent and had some good players. We had plenty of opportunities to level the scoring in the second half but couldn’t finish our chances. Everyone worked hard for the whole game and didn’t give up. Plenty of positives came out of the game and also parts of our game we need to work on for next week. – Vincent Talladira (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 7 defeated Pembroke White 2
Saints started slowly but were able to apply lots of pressure in attack only to be denied by the Pembroke goalie. Saints finally scored and continued the pressure to lead 4-1 at half-time. Pembroke responded shortly after the break but Saints finished the game with a resounding win. – Charlie Caprogreco (Coach)

Year 3/4  – Saints 7 defeated Wilderness 0
The buzz from Book Week created a vibrant level of excitement prior to the game against Wilderness on Friday. Most players had changed out of costumes, however, Anna Venning’s mime face paint left over from her costume really complimented her soccer uniform. The girls took their positions on the field and were focussed and ready to play. Captain Shirley Liu, along with Levanya De Silva and Nicole Wang, spread out across the pitch and held their positions in a rock-solid defence. Each defender along with Elizabeth McKernan who joined the tight structure later in the game contributed level heads and huge clearing kicks. This defence was instrumental in setting up the play and the forwards made the most of their opportunities. Then there was a whispering in the air, disrupting what had previously been a beautiful day. Only after my glasses were covered in droplets making it impossible to watch the game, did I noticed the rain sprinkling on to the grass like a watering can from above. As the rain ran down the girls’ faces, the paint started to drop down Anna’s, leaving her resembling Heath Ledger’s Joker. This had no negative effect on her game as she channelled her previous success in the rain and scored a first half hat trick. None of the girls was perturbed by the rain, especially Emily Bates and Aurelia Pyne – two of the squads’ youngest members – who each scored in the second half. Sophia Langley threw two hands in the air to celebrate her goal and Anna Venning slotted another to round out the game with four goals. Special mention to Sienna Dellapace who continues to improve and played her best game for the season. This match was easily the best I have been involved in since beginning my time coaching at St Peter’s Girls’ School. – Mark Routley (Coach)

BADMINTON

Saturday 19 August
This week the Open A team had a difficult task against Immanuel, but congratulations to Erica Reid who won her singles match against a tough opponent. The Open Bs have continued their winning streak, defeating Pembroke 5-1. The Open C team also played fantastically, and didn’t lose a match. All girls are training hard as the Open C – E3 teams prepare for their final match next week.

Open A defeated by Immanuel 1-5
Best player: Erica Reid

Open B defeated Pembroke 5-1
Best player: Laura Sivewright

Open C defeated Pembroke 6-0
Best player: Amelie Dunda

Open D1 defeated Pembroke 5-1
Best player: Tiffany Zhou

Open D2 defeated Walford 3-3
Best player: Meredith Li

Open E1 defeated Walford 8-1
Best player: Natacha Zizos Troupakis

Open E2 defeated by Woodcroft 0-9
Best player: Christina Song

Open E3 defeated by Pembroke 3-6
Best player: Hattie Xu

HOCKEY

Saturday 19 August
Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Trinity 4
This was one of Saints’ best matches and the improvement of all the girls on the team was very visible, especially in the first half. Despite Trinity having a very strong team overall, Saints managed to have a strong defence and attacking line with a number of opportunities to score and were unlucky to be behind 0-1 at half-time. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in translating these opportunities onto the scoreboard. A few stand out players include Charlotte Creek, Olivia Goldsmith and Carla Lawrence. Coming into the final week of the season and our Intercol match against Walford, Saints are looking strong and hopefully we can land ourselves a win to end the season on a high. – Lara Khoury (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Trinity 2
The girls started with strong form, linking together well to create great play up the field resulting in many scoring opportunities. Trinity’s solid defence made it difficult for the girls to put the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunately, Trinity were lucky enough to score 2 goals, resulting in a 0-2 loss for the girls. All the girls played well and were looking forward to finishing the season with a win next week. – Sophie Fry (coach)

LACROSSE

Saturday 19 August
Under 15 – Saints 5 defeated by Brighton 11
After coming off a strong win against Wilderness, St Peter’s took on the undefeated Brighton. Looking to bridge the gap from the earlier game in the season when Brighton dominated, we started strongly, creating many scoring opportunities without capitalising. Our defence led by Kate Reade and Abbie Lisle stood solidly and repelled attacks on goal, with Isabelle Norman making many saves.

We struggled to find the net in the first half and trailed 1-5 at the break, but with an increased commitment for the loose ball after half-time, we gained plenty of possession out of the centre through Hattie Maerschel and Millie Wilkin, while Portia Maerschel, with 5 goals, made scoring look easy and we narrowed the margin to 5-7 late in the game. Brighton were feeling the pressure and called a time out before settling and pulling away to win, but Saints gained plenty of confidence and know that we can match it with them in the finals. – Tim Dickson (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints Blue 6 defeated Wilderness Blue 3
In the first half, our goalie, Madison Dornbusch (Year 3), did a great job at stopping the ball with her body. In attack, Lara Maione (Year 4), Hayley Webb (Year 3) and Elysia Scarr (Year 4) ran into space. There were many turnovers throughout the game but Madison Dornbusch and Serae Stolcman (Year 3) kept running up and down the field quickly. In the second half, Lara Maione went in goal and showed great skill when running to the halfway line and throwing the ball. In defence Jenna Maione (Year 5) made some great intercepts and threw the ball hard into the goals whilst in attack. Sophie Lively (Year 3) once again showed her determination, as she never gave up on getting ground balls. Goal scorers were Lara, Jenna and Madison. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints White 1 defeated by Wilderness Gold 10
With some late illnesses, the team had a tough task but the girls never gave up. Everyone played to the best of their ability, and the team held Wildy to only two goals in the first and fourth quarters. Some other highlights were several completed passes, a few long reaching interceptions, and when the girls marked their opponents, Wildy’s attack usually came to a standstill. Despite the score line, Elizabeth McKernan (Year 4) did an amazing job in goals, blocking several attempts. Special mention also goes to Alannah Godfrey (Year 4) for scoring our goal. Keep up the effort Saints White – you ARE improving! – Courtney Tasker (Coach)

NETBALL

Saturday 19 August
Open A – Saints 36 defeated by Westminster 54
The girls played a tough game against second-placed Westminster and unfortunately suffered a disappointing loss. The girls came out determined, especially from Lily Habel’s intense pressure and help down the court. Ebony-Jade Nash-Smith also did really well with her attacking efforts and feeds down the court. However, with Westminster’s persistent efforts, Saints were defeated. The entire team showed great effort and skill in attempting to beat this well-rounded team, but still have areas to improve upon. The girls now look forward to Intercol and hope to finish the season on a high.
– Abbey Goodwin (Co-Captain)

Open B – Saints 28 defeated by Westminster 68

Open E (Year 12) – Saints 29 defeated Seymour 16
This week we came up against another Seymour team and, despite playing with only six players for half of the game, we started off strongly with amazing work in the ring from India Deere and Chelsea Marchetti. Alice Petchey and Georgia Bateman worked well together throughout the game in centre court, getting the ball down to our end and making a number of turnovers. A huge thank you to India Deere and Ava Loechel for filling in for us last minute! We are looking forward to our last game and Intercol match against Walford next week. – Emma Mockridge (Year 12)

Open E (Year 11) – Saints 48 defeated Wilderness 4
What an amazing game! The girls combined well to record their biggest win of the season. So much improvement from every member of the team and the defensive pressure was outstanding from everyone. – Jo Knapp (Coach)

Year 10A – Saints 11 defeated by Westminster 91
The 10As played another tough match on Saturday, facing off against Westminster. A lot of hard work was done in the defensive half of the court, with our offence not managing to score at every opportunity. With only seven players, each team member pushed herself as hard as she could to keep up the pressure throughout the game. A massive well done for seeing through a game that was very tough for the team. – Grace Russo (Coach)

Year 10B – Saints 14 defeated by Westminster 88
The Year 10B team did their best against our toughest opposition who were extremely strong, and unfortunately our continual defensive pressure was not enough to affect them. Irrespective of the score, the girls showed improvement in their defence and attacking skills. Best players to Olivia Law and Sarah Carrodus for their efforts in defending. – Emily Wishart (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 39 defeated Westminster 36
We got off to a slow start, with the score being 9-all at the end of the first quarter. Tesse Parker and Ella Liddy shot well in the first half, not missing many shots, while Sarah Wishart and Hannah Freeman did their best effort to stop as many goals as they could. Our passing wasn’t at our best but, at the end of the third quarter, we were up by eight goals. Westminster played a very strong last quarter, with time being in our favour as we came up in the end by three goals. Good job to all the girls for putting up a fight in a game that was very aggressive at times. – Chelsea Walls (Year 9)

Year 9B – Saints 22 defeated by Westminster 42
First quarter was strong, the score only differing by 1 goal – Westminster’s way. The second quarter was also fairly strong, but it was from here when the goals and our score began to deteriorate. Westminster were a tall, strong team who communicated beautifully and played like a well-oiled machine, deserving the 20-point win against our team. To improve the final score for our last game, a key area to focus on at training is our centre passes, as these were insufficient, especially in the first quarter. Our attack should also practise movement around the goal circle and our defence should practise the ‘turn and block’ when defending goal shooters. An area we could all improve on would be building strength in our arms and hands, allowing us to gauge a strong grip on the ball for unexpected or challenging passes. A big well done for Lucy Young and Ellen Zhang who excellently contributed to our game with their brilliant intercepts – good job girls! – Lucy White (Year 9)

Year 9/10C – Saints 10 defeated by Pembroke 58
The girls improved a lot throughout the game and had a great second quarter, only losing 7-13, but could not sustain the pressure against Pembroke. Thanks to the two girls who filled in and helped the team out. – Emily Braggs (Coach)

Year 8A – Saints 26 defeated Westminster 23
It was a very rough game this week and all the girls should be commended for their determination and persistence. It was great to see strong defensive pressure the whole way down the court and this gave us an edge to secure the win. Well done to Sophie Barr who had an outstanding game, getting many intercepts, which then gave us a lot more shooting opportunities. Great effort girls. – Amy Wishart (Coach)

Year 8B – Saints 11 defeated by Westminster 26
The girls played a good game against Westminster and again showed their improvement by bringing the ball down the court in defence and by the girls’ strong passing feeding it into the circle at the attacking end. Their strong determination kept going throughout the game and the girls never gave up. Overall, they should be proud of their achievements. Best players go to Sara Peak and Jenna Bowden for working together in the ring and getting the majority of the shots in. – Sophia West (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 52 defeated Westminster 9
The Year 7A netball team took a little while to get going; at the first quarter break we were level with Westminster 7 to 7. A few positional changes and a change in attitude saw Saints take the game away in the next three quarters with a final score reflecting this. Fantastic teamwork girls, and great work in the goal circle from Toni Christiansen and Adele Eaton. – Michelle Blackburn (Coach)

Year 7B – Saints 46 defeated Immanuel C 6
The girls played an extremely strong game today and they should all be proud of the effort they each put in. They all worked together as a team and showed their improvement from earlier in the season, utilising the skills we have been working on. Defence played a great part in the win as they caused multiple turnovers. Well done to Adele Russell who constantly worked hard to gain many intercepts and did this through the entire game. Shooters did very well and focussed on their technique, which helped us score more. Mid-court players were excellent in working the ball down the court. Well done to all girls and their improvement both individually and as a team. – Georgia Naughton (Coach)

Enews – Week 4, Term 3 2017

Issue no. 24
Enews-banner W4 Winter Interhouse

Sensational weather as House spirit shines at Winter Interhouse

Last Saturday, Winter Interhouse was held for Years 7 – 12 students. It was a beautiful morning and fantastic to see so many parents and families around the School grounds supporting their Houses. The Saints Sport Support Group ran a barbecue and organised Wicked Coffee to be in attendance, which many players and supporters made good use of. House Captains organised teams for the morning and the standard of play across Netball, Badminton, Hockey and Soccer was strong.

Congratulations to the winning Houses:

Badminton – Kilburn
Netball – Kilburn
Hockey – Patteson
Soccer – Patteson

These teams were given the shields on the day but it was also announced again at Monday’s assembly. It is always such a positive morning to be a part of and the community spirit was obvious and commented on by many observers. Seeing younger girls playing in the same team as Year 12s encourages these girls and gives them confidence in the level they can reach.

The next couple of weeks will see the conclusion of Winter Sport and the last round is our inaugural Winter Sport Intercol clash against Walford. We currently hold this trophy from summer and would love to keep it in our hands after the winter season.

From the Head of Junior School

Suzanne HaddyToday our Junior School students heralded in Book Week (19 – 26 August) with our traditional Book Week assembly and parade. For many, the yearly book character dress-up day may just seem a ‘bit of fun’, or a chance to wear something other than school uniform for a day. However, it also symbolises the importance we place on developing a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy during the Junior School years.

One of our core aims as a high-performing School is to continually evaluate and improve our teaching and learning programs using evidence-based approaches. Our current focus for improvement centres around quality teaching and learning in Mathematics.

We have introduced additional teachers during three Mathematics lessons per week at Years 4, 5 and 6, and our Reception to Year 3 students are increasing their numeracy skills as they engage in hands-on game playing through the Mind Lab program. We have enhanced opportunities for all students to engage in computational thinking in relation to coding, with the implementation of 1:1 iPads in R – 6, plus banks of laptops. And this year, our teachers have focused on providing more opportunities for students not just to learn the skills associated with Mathematics, but to help them contextualise these as they apply them to situations outside the classroom.

Over the next few months, Junior School teachers will be undertaking significant training in developing the thinking strategies, skills and attitudes that our students bring to mathematical situations. They will commit time to their own professional development outside of school hours, as well as welcome our visiting specialist into their classrooms to work with them side-by-side.

Education is a partnership, and I would like to emphasise the important role that parent attitudes play in contributing towards their children’s achievement. There is a significant body of evidence around the positive effects on both attitude towards the subject and overall achievement when parents display positive attitudes themselves. So, I encourage you to find opportunities to highlight or discuss with your daughter, situations where mathematical thinking is used in your everyday experiences.

We are excited to be taking this journey and we look forward to sharing more through year level newsletters and updates.

Book Week 2017

W4 Book Week 2

Super heroes, princesses, colourful critters – today’s Book Week Parade had it all!

Our Junior School students and their parents went to great lengths as our girls dressed up as their favourite book character for the day.

It is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the importance of reading and one which continues to grow our girls’ love of books.

The parade marked our official launch of Book Week 2017 which carries the theme, ‘Escape to Everywhere’.

The girls had a fantastic time today, as did many of their teachers!

Selwyn House Dinner 2017

W4 Selwyn House dinner

Last Friday night, the Arts Centre was transformed into a tropical paradise for Selwyn’s Hawaiian-themed House Dinner. It was full to the max and decorated with surfboards, leis, pineapples, balloons, beach toys and even a grass hut! The night kicked off at 6:30pm as the Year 7 – 12 girls and Selwyn staff arrived, dressed in an amazing array of colourful costumes ranging from Hula girls and surfers to coconuts and pineapples. We tucked into a delicious menu of guacamole and corn chips for entrée, burgers for main and ice-cream with an assortment of toppings for dessert, all served by a wonderful group of parent helpers.

Along with much laughter and plenty of dancing, there was also time for the House to play a few games. We started with a ‘guess the Year 12 baby pic quiz’, won by the Year 10s, followed by ‘guess the TV theme song’, won by the Year 11s. We then had a very impressive game of limbo which definitely highlighted Selwyn’s flexible dancers and gymnasts.

The Year 11 girls spent several weeks organising and planning the evening, and I cannot thank them enough for their efforts! The night was loads of fun and a memorable last House Dinner for all the Year 12s.

W4 Kirby Shaw Visit

Thanks to everyone involved in Kirby Shaw’s workshops and concert at St Peter’s Girls last weekend.

Our Concert Choir learnt so much from the world-renowned American choral expert, as did many singers from other local schools and community choirs.

Kirby’s visit was a great success and yet another reason why our Music program is one of the best going around.

If you didn’t catch it last Friday, here’s a snippet from one of the workshops:

Volleyball Knockout Competition

W4 Volleyball

The Saints Open Squad took part in Open Knockout on 15 August. The girls competed against Reynella East, which ended up in a hard-fought draw. Ankita and her excellent sets, in addition to Charlotte Carney’s great reception sadly couldn’t finish off with a win. The girls then came out firing to beat Loreto 2 sets to 0. Mikaela Georgiadis’ excellent defensive play as well as Brooke Elliott’s fabulous setting helped pull the girls across the line for the great win. Woodcroft followed and our girls also played a strong game, winning 2 sets to 0 again. Ava’s great blocking and Tahlia’s exceptional movement on the court made the win convincing and held the girls in high spirits. The final match was against Seaford High, where the girls finished on an absolutely sensational note, winning 2 sets to 1. Charlotte White’s incredible spikes and Emily Murdock’s wonderful setting proved what an amazing team the girls make and they look forward to the challenge of State Finals that lie ahead.

Careers Networking Breakfast 2017 is a great success!

W4 Careers Networking Breakfast

On Wednesday, St Peter’s Girls hosted the Careers Networking Breakfast. The aim was to assist students to make informed choices about their career paths so that they can select appropriate school subjects and tertiary courses. By partnering our students with an Old Scholar who can speak to their areas of interest, we hoped to provide students with access to real-world insights into vocational fields.

Years 10 – 12 students attended the breakfast and were joined by 16 Old Scholars who generously gave up their time to mentor our girls. Students were allocated to tables covering Health Sciences, Medicine, Psychology, Science, Engineering, Law, Commerce, Accounting, Public Relations, Event Management, Tourism and Hospitality. The girls were encouraged to speak to as many of the mentors as possible.

Feedback from our Old Scholars and students has been outstanding; the Old Scholars in particular were pleased to have the opportunity to return to their School and they were impressed by the confidence of our girls. Many of the students have the contact details of the mentors and are hoping to develop these bonds in the future.

I would like to thank Megan McCormack (Old Scholar Officer) and Fiona McGregor (Events Officer) for their help organising the event, and also to the staff who attended. Finally, the event would not have been possible without the generous support of our Old Scholars and I look forward to forging new and lifelong associations for our students with this network, which they will also be a part of in the future.

NETBALL – OPEN KNOCKOUT

Friday 11 August
Last Friday, the Open A Netball team travelled to Mercedes College to compete in their second round of the State Knockout competition. The girls played two games, against Cabra and Mercedes, facing some strong competition and tough outdoor conditions. The game against Cabra was a very strong effort from all the girls. Excellent defensive pressure provided plenty of opportunities for shooting goals. Sivi Sivasuthan and Fiona Dawson’s accuracy within the goal ring assisted the girls to a 7-goal win. In our second game against Mercedes, the girls played well considering tough wind conditions. Our mid-courters Holly Cunningham, Abbey Goodwin and Tahlia Towers worked hard to continue driving the ball down the court, assisting some excellent passages of play. Despite a loss against Mercedes, the girls should be very proud of their efforts.
Sophie Freeman and Abbey Goodwin (Captains)

JUNIOR BASKETBALL

Wednesday 9 August
Year 6 Blue – Saints 14 defeated by Seymour Blue 30
St Peter’s Blue had another fast-paced game against some very experienced Seymour players. Well done to Willow Stewart-Rattray (2) and Matilda Thomas (4) who ran and ran, popping up in defence and offence. Good work by Hannah Williams who showed great improvement in her defensive work and positioning. Zoe Pool and Georgia Parsons made some great intercepts, with Zoe working hard to bring the ball out of defence and Georgia positioning herself well in offence. Emma Pool (2) showed her determination again, stealing the ball from the opposition. Helen Zhang, Sophie Dansie and Bridgette Leach (6) worked hard to get the ball and did some great dribbling to outsmart their players and drive for the basket. – Sharon Leach (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 34 defeated Pembroke Blue 11
The girls played an excellent game last week, with a great start against Pembroke! They were very enthusiastic and played well as a team. Special mention to Chloe Porter and Ellie Humphrey for playing with great intensity throughout the game; Chloe playing excellent in defence in the middle of the zone and Ellie attacking the ball down the entire court in attack. The girls should be congratulated on a much deserved win! – Chelsea Marchetti (Student Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 20 drew with Seymour 20
This week’s game was a tough one that could have gone to either team but ended in a draw. The girls were able to defend their players well and keep the pressure on. A special mention to Charlotte Norman for her great defending. – Josephine Dal Pra (Coach)

JUNIOR NETBALL

Wednesday 9 August
Year 4 – Saints 14 defeated Wilderness 0
An awesome game from Saints, with great teamwork to work the ball around and down the court to great effect. Our defenders were amazing, with many turnovers, keeping the 3-feet space and hands over the pass. All midfield players moved to space and led very well and the shooters were able to capitalise from the excellent build-up play. – Karen Braun (Coach)

SOCCER

Wednesday 9 August
Open A – Saints 2 defeated Seymour 1
After showing great improvement following their Knockout game on Tuesday, the girls turned up to this game with a hunger to win. Starting the game with only 9 players, the girls worked well and managed to score an early goal. They worked hard defensively and blocked many of Seymour’s shots. The girls were able to go into the second half with a 2-goal lead, thanks to a goal by Chloe Deieso. Unfortunately, the girls conceded a goal in the second half. However, they all should be very proud of their efforts as the game was definitely a stand-out for the season. – Dominique Rigby (Captain)

Open B – Saints 0 defeated by Seymour 4
We started the game with no subs and only 10 girls. However, the girls didn’t go down without a fight, narrowly missing 2 shots in the first half. Nevertheless, the numbers and lack of subs got the better of us and we conceded 3 in the first half. As the second half started, the girls seemed to lift again, putting immense pressure on and hitting the post with a great shot inside the box; however, we were unable to find the back of the net. – Peter Krantis (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 0 drew with Seymour 0
A good result for a tough game, with the girls battling out a nil-all draw. Both teams had chances to go ahead but defending was above par and no goals went through for either side. We missed a few good chances which could have put us in front and a penalty saved by our goalkeeper denied the opposition a goal, so all up a fair result for both sides. – Vincent Talladira (Coach)

Middle B – Saints 3 defeated Seymour 0
The girls played their best game of the season, dominating the match from start to finish. The highlight of the game was Emanuelle Russell scoring her first goal of the season. Overall, it was a terrific team performance. – Manni Katopodis (Coach)

Year 7 – Saints 1 drew with Wilderness 1
With only 10 players, the girls put in a solid performance against a strong Wilderness side. Each week the girls have improved and it really showed in this match, with some great defensive work to come away with a draw against a good opponent. Mia Dodd had a great game, scoring the goal and unlucky not to have a couple more. Annie Bradshaw was great in defence and Flossie Wilson, Georgia Barclay and Bridget Healey all showed significant signs of improvement. Keep up the good work. – Kosta Bakopanos (Coach)

JUNIOR SOCCER

Friday 11 August
Year 6 – Saints 3 defeated by Pulteney 4
After starting the game with one player down and only getting a full side mid-way through the first half, the girls went down due to being outnumbered but still fought their way back into the game and almost got the victory. We were chasing the game but the girls never gave up and came so close to scoring a goal to equalise. Overall, a great performance by everyone and a great start to the term. Well done to all the girls. – Vincent Talladira (Coach)

Year 5 – Saints 3 drew with Pembroke Yellow 3
The Year 5 team fought well early on, bagging 2 goals in the first half and conceding 1 in the second half. A few changes were made and we scored another, making it 3-1. However, the girls began to tire and we conceded 2, making it an even 3-3. With only a few minutes to go, we started pushing to get that winning goal, missing a lot of chances only narrowly. Unfortunately, we didn’t find the winning goal. It was a great effort and each player performed extremely well. – Charlie Caprogreco (Coach)

Year 3-4 – Saints 2 defeated by Walford 4
After a successful opening game to the season, the girls were keen to impress yet again. The first half against Walford showed excellent promise. Grace Richardson-Stevens was instrumental again as goalkeeper. She saved everything thrown her way in the first half. Her clearing kicks sailed over the Walford players and allowed for easy entries up forward. The ball spent the majority of time in our forward line, with Anna Venning having plenty of shots on goal. She converted two of these attempts successfully and we went in at half-time with a 2–0 lead. Levanya De Silva played another strong game, continuing to teach the new players how to play defence. However, in the second half the tide changed and Walford scored four goals. Sienna Dellapace and Elizabeth McKernan enjoyed their first games for the season. When the referee blew his whistle to complete the game, the final score left Walford ahead by two goals. – Mark Routley (Coach)

LACROSSE

Under 11 – Saints Blue 4 defeated by Wilderness Gold 6
It was another cold morning but all of the girls were ready for the tough match ahead. Everyone began well by running forward into attack and spreading out. Jenna Maione (Year 5) and Lara Maione (Year 4) successfully got goals as they threw the ball hard into the corners of the goal. Elysia Scarr (Year 4) also did well in attack by quickly passing the ball. All of the girls did a great job in defence as they stayed with one of the opposition players; Sophie Lively (Year 3) and Matilda Wilkin (Year 2) did this especially well. At half-time the girls were down by only one goal and could still win the match. Hayley Webb (Year 3) did a great job at picking up ground balls and running with the ball. Madison Dornbusch (Year 3) also ran well with the ball up and down the field. Serae Stolcman (Year 3) was in goals and did a fantastic job. Goal scorers were Jenna and Lara. Although we did not win, the girls did a great job and we have improved immensely since the last time we played them.

Under 11 – Saints White 7 defeated St Aloysius 3
Congratulations to the team on a well-deserved win after being defeated last time the teams met. The girls again showed improvement on the skills learned at training, including moving to free space, fighting for ground balls and connecting passes down field. Elizabeth McKernan (Year 4) was again outstanding in goal. – Courtney Tasker (Coach)

From the Acting Director of Teaching and Learning

A glimpse of the future

Parsons, BrianIt is the wettest and coldest time of the year in Adelaide. Those of us who support the Adelaide Football Club are happy to linger in the present. However, even for Crows supporters, our thoughts naturally turn to early 2018: the height of summer. This will also be the time that our students begin the next phase of their school journey or, in the case of our Year 12s, a very new and different phase of their lives. Our planning for next year has begun in earnest, with our Year 9 and Senior School students currently making decisions for the future. Deciding what to do in the near future, let alone the distant future, is difficult and it is best to gain a variety of information from a variety of sources. Fortunately, there are many opportunities for our girls to access what they need to make informed choices.

This year we will again provide the opportunity for our girls to meet with excellent role models: our Old Scholars. Megan McCormack (Old Scholar Liaison Officer) and Karen Alderson (Careers Counsellor) have organised the Old Scholars Careers Networking Breakfast, to be held in the Arts Centre from 7.30 – 9am next Wednesday 16 August. This event connects students with a large number of Old Scholars in a variety of careers in an informal setting. Occasions such as this are an ideal way for students to find out what life is like for someone in a career of interest to them. Our Old Scholars have generously donated their time for the benefit of our students and I am pleased to advise that there are still places available for them.

For our Year 12 students, now is the time to combine diligent effort in their studies with looking ahead at possible future options, including further study, training and work. Karen Alderson has a wealth of knowledge about the wide variety of pathways available and the various ways our students can enter them.

Some of the biggest decisions about studies are made by our Year 10 students. Fortunately, the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) gives them the tools and knowledge to identify their strengths and interests, and helps them to identify careers that will best suit them. A major focus of the PLP is work experience, which our students completed at the end of last term. They also attended the Science Alive Careers Day at the Adelaide Showground last week.

It was pleasing to see the interest in the Subject Expo that was held on Thursday of Week 1. The mix of formal information sessions and informal opportunities for students and parents to discuss subjects with teachers appears to be a popular feature of our subject counselling process. Our Year 9, 10 and 11 students have now made preliminary choices about their elective subjects for next year. Over the next two weeks, we will use this information to develop the timetable so we can provide the best possible match between the resources of the School and the individual needs of our students. There will then be the opportunity for students and parents to fine-tune choices. The key events for Year 10 and 11 students are the Academic Conferences on Tuesday 22 August, where students and parents can discuss specific current and future subjects with subject teachers, and Course Counselling on Thursday 24 August. Course Counselling is carried out by our Heads of Department, who have expert knowledge of the curriculum offerings and is informed by subject recommendations for each student from their subject teachers.

2017 Premier’s ANZAC Spirit Award

W3 ANZAC Spirit Award

The Premier’s ANZAC Spirit Award is a competition run by the Department of Education and Child Development (DECD). It offers students from Years 9 and 10 the opportunity to research any servicemen and women from World War One to uncover some of the untold stories of bravery and sacrifice. St Peter’s Girls has a rich tradition of success in the competition, and in 2017, Year 10 student Hannah Brown is one of the successful recipients of the Premier’s ANZAC Spirit Award.

At Assembly on Monday 31 July, Hannah formally received her award from DECD representative Mr Malcolm McInerney who spoke glowingly of Hannah’s research and the significance of the award. Consequently, Hannah will join 12 other South Australian students on a tour of Vietnam in October to research Australia’s involvement in the conflict in south-east Asia from 1966-1972. The School was also recognised with a special plaque for our participation in the competition. Hannah has some remarkable insights into what motivated her to research her chosen subject:

I’ve always had an interest in history and how the world came to be the way it is today. Yet it isn’t only the facts that I enjoy learning about, but the fascinating stories created through time.

Entering the Premier’s ANZAC Spirit Prize set me the challenge of researching the personal story of a South Australian who served in the First World War. After coming across a newspaper article published in 1915, written by Sister Evelyn Claire Trestrail, a nurse who served in Antwerp, Belgium in 1914, I decided I would like to learn more about her story. Evelyn’s article recounted the story of the nurses and doctors serving in their hospital unit in Antwerp as part of the ‘Women’s Imperial Service League’.

After further research, I began to understand the challenging, yet fulfilling months Evelyn experienced in Antwerp, treating the constant stream of wounded men, all the while surrounded by danger. I was able to gain an insight into her thought and emotions, and was inspired by her positive, fun outlook despite fearful circumstances – one of the many ways Evelyn displayed the ANZAC spirit.

Finally, I was able to understand the fearful events of 7 October, when the hospital in Antwerp came under the direct line of German fire, and the gripping story of the nurses’ work to save their patients, and escape from the burning city.

Hockey takes a young talent to Perth

W3 Hockey2

Year 5 student Molly Dwyer is a rising star on the hockey pitch – so we sat down with her to talk about her love of the sport and her recent State team selection.

“I started playing hockey when I was six years old in the Under 9 competition. I have always loved hockey because it’s obviously a lot of fun, but also the friendships you make.

I made my first State team last year when I was 10. I made the Under 12 State team and we played in Cairns. This year I made the team again and will be competing in the Pacific School games here in Adelaide in December. I also trialled for the Under 13 Hockey State team and was so excited to be chosen for this team. We will be heading to Perth at the end of September. My goals for next year are to be chosen for the Under 12 and Under 13 State hockey teams.

I love to play hockey and I hope to be playing hockey for a long time and to continue to achieve my goals.”

Well done Molly, and all the best for your competition in Perth!

Take a bow – Year 6 violinist to take the stage for a recital

W3 Violin

Our Junior School students are definitely shining bright inside and out of the School. Year 6 student Angel Li, a passionate violinist, will be performing a recital as part of the Spring 2017 Lunch Hour Series on 6 September at Pilgrim Church, 12 Flinders Street, Adelaide at 12.10pm. Amongst her many awards is first place in the ’27 years and under Violin or Viola Solo’ at the 2016 Adelaide Eisteddfod. Angel kindly provided a few words about her experience playing the violin.

“It has been five years since I started playing the violin at the age of six. I still remember the day when I heard a very interesting sound and I thought to myself “what is that fascinating sound?” So I asked my parents and was told that it was the sound of a violin. Then I was attracted by the amazing sound and I wanted to start learning the violin.

“Rome was not built in one day,” that means that it takes a lot of practice until you are perfect. I practise around one hour a day. Although I have played numerous concertos and pieces, my favourites are Partita 3 in E major composed by Johanne Sebastian Bach and Meditation by French composer Jules Massanet.

I like to play the violin because it is a new experience and it develops your coordination. Also, playing the violin gives you opportunities to enter competitions and learn many new technique skills. In 2017 at the age of 10, I achieved a high distinction for AMEB Certificate of Performance exam. It is an unforgettable journey for me and I have learned to never give up and keep going until the end.”

Good luck for your upcoming recital Angel! Further details and ticket purchases can be made at recitalsaustralia.org.au

From the construction zone: new Library update

W3 Resource Centre

Master Plan progress continues at St Peter’s Girls! Following on from the successful opening of the new Middle School, construction now focuses on the new Library, which is located where the old Middle School was. Heartwarming Winter Drive Update

W3 Winter Drive FinalThe Winter Drive girls who launched the clothing appeal for needy families in Lebanon are excited to announce that donations have been sent by boat for delivery to a refugee camp:

We would like to thank everybody who contributed. As a School, we were able to send over 230 kilograms of warm clothes!

The clothing will take a few months to be delivered, nevertheless it will arrive just in time for winter in Lebanon! When it does arrive, we will be sure to present images of the families with what may be your donation.

If you were unable to donate an item of clothing last term, there are still ways to be involved. We will be holding a fundraiser later in the term to help cover the cost of shipping; we will keep you posted as soon as a date is set.

Again, thank you to everybody who donated to the Winter Drive, as it will most definitely make a big difference in many families’ lives.

Reminder – Traffic Flow and Pick-up Procedures

Despite the extension of the Bell Yett Reserve car park, there is still significant traffic congestion at the conclusion of the school day. The Mid-Year Reception class finishes at 3.15pm each day, 15 minutes prior to the rest of the School. The girls, accompanied by their teacher, walk to the designated drop-off/pick-up zone. Parents are able to drive through and collect their daughters. In order for this to work safely and effectively, it’s imperative that all drivers are aware of the following:

> Cars must not be parked in the drop-off/pick-up zone;

> Drivers must not exit their car when in the drop-off/pick-up zone. If your daughter is
not in the designated area when you arrive to collect her, you must find legal parking
before exiting your car and coming to look for her;

> Senior staff will be on duty. If you are asked to move on, please do so. It may be
necessary to circle the block and rejoin the pick-up line;

> Girls must always enter or exit from the passenger side of the vehicle;

> Our girls’ safety is paramount and hence the driver’s full attention is required. Please
refrain from talking on your mobile phone whilst using the drop-off/pick-up zone;

> Out of consideration for others in line, girls should ‘load up’ quickly, allowing the traffic to move smoothly through the zone.

We appreciate that pick-up time can be a source of frustration, however if we all adhere to the guidelines above, it can be a positive experience!

Year 9 Geography Fair Trade Expo

W3 Fair Trade

The girls in Year 9 have been exploring Fair Trade. They were set a complex task where they had to showcase different perspectives of various stakeholders on the topic, “Should ‘Colesland’ only stock Fair Trade chocolate?”

The students used the Centenary Wing breakout areas and classes to showcase what they think about Fair Trade chocolate. They presented their information to a group of Year 8 students, who rotated around to hear their various presentations. The students then assessed the presentations and voted on the issue.

The Scenario
Colesland is Australia’s biggest supermarket. They currently stock mainly non-Fairtrade chocolate with a limited supply of Fair Trade products. As a result of customer demand, they are considering changing to stocking only Fair Trade chocolate. Colesland has decided to host a meeting to discuss the issues.

Stakeholders include:
Executives from Colesland
Executives from Fair Trade
Cocoa growers from Ivory Coast (non-Fair Trade plantation)
Cocoa growers from Ivory Coast (Fair Trade plantation)
Socially conscious, chocolate addicted shoppers
Poor chocolate addicted pensioners
Bosses of Nestlebury’s (non-Fair Trade chocolate company)

The girls thoroughly enjoyed researching this topic and had fun dressing up in character and presenting their case to eager listeners. Many went out of their way to ensure that the students tasted Fair Trade chocolate and non-Fair Trade chocolate to ensure they knew what the taste difference was. This may have helped steer the vote. The votes are yet to be counted so stay tuned to find out if Colesland will stock Fair Trade chocolate.

Congratulations to the following students who have been named in the Under 15 SA Comets Lacrosse team: Abbie Lisle, Isabelle Norman, Kate Reade, Stephanie Smalls, Chelsea Walls and Millie Wilkin. The team will contest the national championships to be held in Perth from 1 to 7 October.

SKIING

Many of our families travel to the snow during winter and we often have students who enter the South Australian Interschools Championships run by SASKI. We extend our congratulations to Lucy Steele-Scott (Year 8) who competed in the Women’s Division 3 and received a gold medal for first place.

JUNIOR NETBALL

Wednesday 2 August
Year 4 – Saints 5 defeated by Pembroke Green 11
The girls played a good game together, moving the ball well and making some great intercepts. Awesome team spirit shown, with players encouraging each other. – Karen Braun (Coach)

SOCCER

Wednesday 2 August
Open A – Saints 0 defeated by Immanuel 2

Open B – Saints 1 defeated by Walford 3
The girls started the game well, scoring the first goal. After half-time Walford were able to score three goals due to some lapses of concentration in defence. The girls kept trying until the end. – Peter Krantis (Coach)

Middle A – Saints 0 defeated by Immanuel 2
A tough game to start off the term and, although the score line may not show it, the girls performed well. After going down by 2 goals in the first half, the girls fought back and had plenty of chances to get a goal or two back. Unfortunately, missing those chances meant the result stayed as it was but on another day could’ve easily gone our way. – Vincent Talladira (Coach)

JUNIOR SOCCER

Friday 4 August
Year 5 – Saints 4 defeated Loreto 1
In wet and windy conditions the team started the season with a dominant win. The girls pushed the ball around nicely, which enabled Florence Russell to score four great goals. Good team effort and congratulations to all players. – Peter Krantis (Coach)

Year 3/4 – Saints 4 defeated Loreto 1
The winter sky, dark and threatening, was the topic of discussion before the game began. The rain held off as the girls took to the field, with Anna Venning scoring her first goal quickly which energised the girls, providing them confidence for the first half. The play moved quickly and reminders for the girls to maintain their positions were frequent. Levanya De Silva commanded the backline like a general with exceptional foot skills, and Anna Venning scored again in the first half, making the most of her opportunities. The sky grew darker but the girls played the second half in a similar fashion. Then came the deluge, saturating and relentless. As the parents reached for their umbrellas, the children on the sidelines jumped under the tarpaulin. The players on the field were sodden but enjoyed their time on the pitch. The Year 4 players in their second season enforced the game plan and were quick to offer on-field leadership, putting old rules into place. Emily Bates, Lucy Tulloch and Aurelia Pyne all enjoyed their first game, actively getting involved. Sophia Langley looked comfortable in the forward line and scored a great goal in the second half, with Anna Venning chiming in with another goal to round off a magnificent hat-trick. Aurelia Pyne finished off her first fortnight at St Peter’s Girls by kicking a goal, making her transition even more memorable. Congratulations to everyone who braved the rain and really enjoyed themselves. – Mark Routley (Coach)

BADMINTON

Saturday 5 August
This week the Open E1 and E2 teams played their fixture against each other at school. Both teams performed well, but the E2 team won 7 of the 9 matches. HOCKEY

Saturday 5 August
Open A – Saints 4 defeated Loreto 0
This was another fantastic match played by the girls to follow a win the previous weekend. Our strikers used the space well and helped keep the options open for the midfielders. The talk and intensity was high throughout the game from all the girls. There was strong movement and control of the ball by the girls in the midfield, especially from Holly Cardone and Charlotte Creek who were playing exceptionally well. Our four goal scorers of the game were Grace Packer, Poppie Goldsmith, Emma Carrodus and Holly Cardone. Saints have definitely improved as a team over the past couple of weeks and we are hoping to cement our progress in the final weeks of the season. – Lara Khoury (Captain)

Open B – Saints 5 defeated Pembroke C 0
The Open Bs were dominant in their victory over Pembroke on the weekend. This began with Aroha Munroe and Georgina Keough at the back, who did not lose a contest and regularly passed the ball out into space for our midfielders to run on to. The connection between the backline and midfield was very good and the only downside was that, like the As, we had many chances that just missed or the goalie was able to get a foot on. It was excellent to see Ruby Thorp and Imogen Nienaber’s confidence grow through this season, and on Saturday they took another big step forward in feeling comfortable playing at this level with some hard tackling and beautiful 1-2 passes. Goal scorers were Holly Cardone (2), Aroha Munroe, Annabelle Black and Amelie Eaton. – Sophie Fry (Coach)

LACROSSE

Saturday 5 August
Under 11 – Saints Blue 6 defeated Saints White 3
SA might have had its AFL Showdown last weekend, but Saints Girls had their own ‘rivalry’ match. The dynamic duo of Jenna and Lara Maione (Years 5 and 4) and their Saints Blue team were up against the other Year 4s and their Saints White team. We had swift running down the field by Sophie Lively, Hayley Webb, Madi Dornbusch, and Serae Stolcman (all Year 3), and the diligence of Ella Pearce (Year 2) sticking with her opponent. Thanks to Coco Dimond (Year 4), Elysia Scarr (Year 4), and Hayley Webb for all doing a stint in goals for their respective teams. Alannah Godfrey prevented shots on goal at one end, and then scored in attack, along with Mabel Cook and Lauren Pearce (all Year 4).  It was great to see all the players participating, helping in defence and assisting in attack; especially good was the use of the space behind the goals. Special mention goes to the parents for coming out and supporting the girls on a cold and windy day, and Millie Wilkin (Under 15s) for umpiring what would have been a very tough match to officiate. – Courtney Tasker (Coach)

NETBALL

Saturday 5 August
Open A – Saints 46 defeated Scotch 41
This week the girls came out firing for a tough match against Scotch College. The first quarter was hard fought, with the goal margin only minimal but still placing Saints in the lead. The intense defence, particularly Sophie Freeman’s tight pressure and hard-fought intercepts, helped the girls increase their lead and gain momentum against Scotch. The game continued to increase in intensity and contests became more important as the girls had to fight for every ball and every goal. The girls managed to pull away in the third quarter thanks to Abbey Goodwin’s precise feeding into the ring and the goalies capitalising on all of the defenders’ turnovers. The game finished with Saints Girls having another successful win and looking forward to knockout and the last few remaining games of the season. – Sophie Freeman and Abbey Goodwin (Co-Captains)

Open B – Saints 47 defeated by Scotch 53
The Open B girls had a close contest against Scotch on the weekend. The girls work hard as a team to create turnovers all over the court. Nikki was a strong target in the goal circle and was combining well with Brooke. The girls went down by 9 goals. Unfortunately, we were not able to win but there were lots of positives to come out of the match. – Alex Walker (Coach)

Open E (Year 12) – Saints 31 defeated Pembroke 22
This week the Year 12 social team had an impressive win, defeating Pembroke. We played a strong defensive game, with some great intercepts from Georgia Nicholls and Sarah Richards restricting Pembroke to just 4 goals in the first half. The second half was much closer but Saints showed great determination and the team is looking forward to playing the last few netball games at Saints and hopefully finishing our season off with some more wins. – Emma Mockridge (Year 12)

Open E (Year 11) – Saints 32 defeated Pembroke 18
It was a great game and all the girls worked collaboratively. We used some of the new drills and techniques from our training that week and worked well together to get the ball down to our goals. Special mention to Emma who did the splits on court with the ball, something she didn’t know she could do. Excellent shooting from all the girls this week and defensive pressure was fantastic. The team are really enjoying playing and deserved the win. – Ally Reade (Year 11)

Year 10B – Saints 8 defeated by Scotch 28
The girl played well as a team this week and, despite the score, the improvement in teamwork, as well as their individual progression since the commencement of the season, is showing. Difficulty in leading towards the ball caused a lot of turnovers and showed areas for further improvement. Best players to Olivia Law and Sarah Carrodus for their continual defensive pressure. – Emily Wishart (Coach)

Year 9/10C – Saints 5 defeated by Westminster 33
Unfortunately, we had to play the whole game with only six players. Despite this, the girls fought hard, pulled together as a team and played well, although the score didn’t reflect this. Many players did well to play out of position due to the lack of players. – Emily Braggs (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 22 defeated by Scotch 50
On Saturday the Saints 9A team played a Scotch team that featured a number of very tall players. Everyone played well and put up a good fight, especially the defenders who did their best to get the ball, although it was hard because the other team had an extremely tall shooter. The third quarter was our greatest performance and was no doubt the strongest. With these valiant efforts, we won the third quarter. In the end, everyone did a really good job. – Ruby Bouhamdan (Year 9)

Year 9B – Saints 18 defeated by Scotch 48
Despite the final score, the Year 9Bs played a very exciting game against Scotch College. The first quarter was relatively successful, as both sides’ defence and attack were excellent, with Saints only down by three goals. During the second quarter Scotch began to shoot more goals, resulting in a 10-point lead at half-time. Sometimes losses highlight which areas our skills are lacking in and suggest what skills we must focus on developing in training. For the defence, turning and blocking the shooters in the goal ring is something to work on, as this will hopefully reduce the number of goals scored by the other team. As for the attack, practising our leads from centre pass and further into court movement would be beneficial, as well as practising forming a line when setting up passes from the back and side lines. Overall, our team had a great game in terms of highlighting what we can do better for next time! – Lucy White (Year 9)

Year 8A – Saints 25 defeated by Scotch 28
This week the team had a tough game against Scotch and unfortunately couldn’t secure a win. By the end of the first quarter Scotch had 5-point lead, which made it difficult to close the margin. The girls managed to bring it back to only 2 goals down going into the last quarter, but struggled with their passing while still showing great determination and persistence. Despite the score, it was an excellent game and it was great to see the girls hold their heads up high for the entire game. – Amy Wishart (Coach)

Year 8B – Saints 8 defeated by Scotch 42
The girls had a difficult game this week against Scotch. With a few of our B team members away this week, some of the girls were trying out new positions and, despite the changes, did a fantastic job. Our passing let us down; however, there were some really great moments in the game, which definitely showed the improvement the team has made. Overall, it was good to see the girls implementing skills learnt at training and giving it their best! A big thank you to Olivia Kelly and Sophie Barr for staying to fill in for the team! – Amy Wishart (Coach)

Year 7A – Saints 10 defeated by Scotch 30
The final score in no way reflected how hard the girls worked, with the team providing plenty of opportunities but struggling to get past Scotch’s circle defence and convert their efforts. A good team performance and special thanks to our circle defenders, Lucy, Sarah and Chase! – Michelle Blackburn (Coach)

Year 7B
Although the girls didn’t have a win this week, they still put in their best efforts on the court. Well done to girls who played in positions they were not as familiar with; you all did a great job. We had a lot of the ball during the game and were able to utilise the skills we have been focussing on, such as leading, dodging and getting in front of players. All areas of the court were strong and put up a good fight against a good side. – Georgia Naughton (Coach)

Year 7C – Saints 24 defeated Wilderness 5
Another fantastic match from the team on Saturday. The girls all contributed to a convincing win with multiple turnovers and great shooting by the goalies. Special mention to Georgia Langley who excelled in a variety of positions and Primrose Robinson who was strong in defence. The girls should be proud of their sportsmanship and team spirit. It was a pleasure to coach them in Sarah’s absence. – Lee Walker (Parent)

KNOCKOUT NETBALL

Year 10 –Saints 37 defeated by Henley 58
Saints faced Henley HS in a cut-throat match that would see the winner progress to the State finals. Despite a good warm-up, it was Henley who got out to a great start by making most of their opportunities to race to a 0-7 lead. Saints finally responded with 3, with Sivi Sivasuthan and Nicky Miller working together in the goal circle. Milly Wood and Charlotte White played determined games against a tall shooter who, when missing her shot, often caught the rebound. Brooke Elliott and Tahlia Towers provided great opportunities for Saints but again turnovers were telling and costly, allowing Henley to slip to a 10-point lead at half-time. Henley maintained pressure throughout the second half and, despite Rachel Kameniar making a number of good intercepts, Henley proved too strong.

KNOCKOUT SOCCER

Open – Saints 0 defeated by Nazareth 5
Saints’ progress in the knockout soccer would be governed by overcoming the current school champions, Nazareth. Playing on a full-size, synthetic pitch at Adelaide Shores was something new to a number of our players who took a while to gauge the speed of the ball. Nazareth opened the scoring about 15 minutes in when the Saints’ defence failed to stop one of their playmakers who guided the ball past best-on-ground, Talah Gobell, in goal. Saints’ defence held strongly, with Ellie Anderson and Bethany Cross both making telling tackles and clearances and Captain Dominique Rigby working tirelessly in midfield, with support from Siena Kulinski, Izzy Villani and Olivia Law. Down 0-3 at half-time, Saints had a determined second half and played significantly better but Nazareth’s strong defence made it tough for Funto Komolafe and Chloe Deieso to have many chances. Unfortunately, despite Talah’s great efforts in goal, Nazareth were successful 0-5.

From the Deputy Principal/Head of Middle School

Richard Lisle inside 220They say ‘good things come to those who wait’…

Last week, in no small way, that old adage held true as the new Middle School was inhabited by wide-eyed, energetic students and excited, eager teachers.

In designing the building, we wanted to embrace the nature that we’re so lucky to be surrounded by, bring light and a sense of space to the learning areas we use (in stark contrast to the old Middle School corridor), whilst also trying to design a space that would complement contemporary early adolescent learning styles. Of course, it was up to the skill and creativity of our architects to translate those wishes into something real!

Alongside the design of the building, we have been working hard as a group of staff to examine exactly what it is that makes learning and teaching at St Peter’s Girls’ School unique, what skills we want to develop in our Middle Years students and what attributes we want them to display as they move through the School. I was pleased to be able to share this work with our students last week, and to show them how the architects had managed to incorporate that thinking into the fabric and architectural language of the new building.

Amongst the attributes, we want our students to be:

• Curious
• Versatile
• Motivated
• Engaged

Staff and students have already commented on how the features of the architecture are helping with that aim. They see glimpses of work that other classes are doing and instantly start to ask questions. They have adapted in versatile and interesting ways to the ‘blank canvas’ that each room provides, each group arranging their similar furniture in different and interesting ways, depending on the slight differences in room shape and size, and the tasks they are being asked to do. The students desire to be in, and use the spaces has been a pleasure to see, with breakout spaces filled by eager, motivated debating teams, SRC groups and other clubs at recess and lunch every day since the hub opened. Finally, there were those who felt that the abundance of glass would be a distraction for students – I’m pleased to report that the reverse is true, with nearly all visitors commenting upon how calm and calming the space is, and how clearly focused the students are, fully engaged in their learning.

Above all, however, the need for flexibility and space for collaboration was at the top of our wish list when we first started discussing possible plans with our architects.

W2 Yong Zhao

This week we were visited by Professor Yong Zhao, recognised worldwide expert on Entrepreneurial Education, along with staff from the Association of Independent Schools of South Australia, to see our Year 7 and 8 Futures students in action, and to mentor some of their individual companies. In his feedback to us, two things were clear. Firstly, how unusual (but powerful) it was to see regular curriculum time given over to developing entrepreneurial thinking and to allowing students to experiment, prototype, challenge and refine their thinking. Secondly, he was very positive in his feedback on the space and how naturally it lent itself to small group collaborative practice. Our Futures teachers have also noted a shift in collaboration, cross-fertilisation of ideas and as a result, productivity, since moving into our new home.

Seeing the way that the space was being used and the independent, creative, collaborative learning that was occurring is certainly one of the highlights of my time here at St Peter’s Girls – it’s what we envisaged when we first started the Futures Program six years ago and then refined it for the relaunch in 2017 – and certainly worth waiting for!

New Middle School Donor Function

Enews donor 3

Last night, it was the Foundation’s absolute pleasure to showcase our new Middle School to those valued donors who have given to us over the past two years. Our guests had the opportunity to talk with and ask questions of our Middle School students, staff and Board members in an intimate setting while enjoying drinks and canapes. Everyone in attendance agreed that the transformation of the building is astounding and the excitement in the room was electric as guests had the opportunity to wander around and admire this new space for our girls.

At the function, our Principal Julia Shea was presented with an invaluable and unique gift brought all the way from China by the grandfather of four of our students, Pingde Han. In China, calligraphy occupies a distinguished position in the field of traditional art. It is not only a means of communication, but also a means of expressing a person’s inner-world in an aesthetic sense. This special piece of art was commissioned by the Han family for the School and was painted by a famous Chinese calligrapher. It says, “The Beautiful St Peter’s Girls’ School”.

donor present final!

After the function, our guests were then given the opportunity to experience the amazing talents of our students by attending the opening night of FAME – The Musical in the Arts Centre.

The generous support of those who have given to the Foundation is absolutely invaluable. We’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank those who have given their time, passion, money and/or services to the School.

Year 10 Kilburn House girls give their time to a worthy cause

W2 Kilburn House

During the holidays, some of the girls from 10 Kilburn completed the service learning element of the connection with their House charity. They took the opportunity to help others who are in need. It is important that we all learn that we can make a difference and that we have a responsibility to give back to those in need when we are in a position to do so. Given that Kilburn’s House charity is the Cancer Council, we contacted them and asked for ways we could help people who are having to stay at the Cancer Council Lodges while undergoing treatment. The manager arranged for the girls to perform cleaning and painting to improve the facilities. The girls showed up for two days of hard work with smiles on their faces, demonstrating excellent team work and a real desire to make a difference. Many of us are affected by cancer and therefore everyone felt they had a connection to the people in the lodges and have at least a small understanding of the struggles they are dealing with. 10 Kilburn are grateful for the opportunity to be involved with this organisation.

“The painting we did was really beneficial to us as students, because we felt as though we were doing something to contribute to the Cancer Council, and something that was going to help make the lives of people in need a bit more comfortable. We also enjoyed the time we spent working together to achieve something, which created a positive outlook on our service learning.”

“By giving up a minute part of my holidays, I was able to provide a family with a freshly painted room to stay in while completing a tough stage in their lives. The girls rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Over the course of two days, we were able to paint a series of objects such as railings, doors, cornices and a bedroom, as the least we could do for those going through the unimaginable.”

“It felt good to help make the stay of those who are going through such a tough time that little bit more comfortable. The rooms looked much better after they were painted and I am glad I was able to take part.”

“I organised the book and DVD shelf in the recreation room and cleaned the windowsills of each of the rooms. I think this will benefit the patients by making ordinary routines simple, such as finding and reading a book or finding a movie to watch. The clean windowsills will also make staying in the rooms more pleasant as the patients do not have to look at dirt and dust.”

Public Speaking at Saints Girls continues its successful run

W2 PESA

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Aditi Tamhankar, who has achieved great success at the recent PESA (Plain English Speaking Awards). Here are a few words from Aditi about her experience:

“On 28 July, I took part in the Plain English Speaking Award State Finals at Legacy House. I am thrilled to share that I won this final and will, in two weeks’ time, represent SA in the Nationals in Melbourne. I was awarded a cash prize, a trophy, a Royal Commonwealth Society membership for two years, as well as the trip to Melbourne. This competition was incredibly tough, involving seven students aged from 15 to 18 who were all fantastic speakers. In the heats, we had one prepared eight minute speech, one short notice task where we were given four minutes to prepare a three minute speech and a short interview related to our speech and current affairs. Although very challenging, it was rewarding and I made many new friends. I can’t wait to go to Melbourne for the National Finals!”

Aditi was presented with her award by Old Scholar Libby Ellis OAM (Kennion ’65). Well done Aditi and all the best for the National Finals.

What is PESA?
PESA is a national competition conducted through Australian secondary schools and colleges. It aims to contribute to the personal development of students through the enhancement of their oral communication skills and the best use of spoken English. PESA aims to encourage and maintain the best use of clear and effective spoken English.

In South Australia the major sponsor is The Commonwealth Society (SA Branch) Inc. and the competition is organised by members of The Penguin Club of Australia, South Australia Inc.

The Plain English Speaking Award was first organised in Victoria in 1977. Since then it has become a national competition.

The national winner competes in an international final held in England by the English Speaking Union.

The national winner also receives the Plain English Speaking Award trophy, as well as financial assistance from BBM to compete in the English Speaking Union International Public Speaking Competition in May 2018.

Year 1 students challenge their thinking with Mind Lab

W2 Year 1

This year the Reception, Year 1, 2 and 3 students and their teachers have been learning to play Mind Lab games. We are enthusiastic and eager to play as often as we can. The games are centred on the Mind Lab method for training and developing thinking and life skills through strategy games.

Students develop the ability to plan and make decisions, solve problems, employ logic, improve their memory and develop their creative side. By applying what they’ve learned to situations in their own lives, this thinking culture also strengthens their emotional and social skills. The Year 1s’ current game, Submarines, integrates the four linchpins of the program: cognitive skills, social skills, dealing with emotions and moral outlooks.

“I was thinking about what Claris was going to do next. I learnt to ask reasonable questions.”
Chelsea

“You have to use cards, magnetic boards, five boats and little dots. The blue dot is a miss and the red dot is a hit or a hit and a sunk.” – Matilda

“The person with the magnetic board had to try and guess which ship the person with the non-magnetic had picked. If you had a wrong guess, the person who had picked the boat would say ‘miss’, if you had a correct guess the person would say ‘hit’!” – Stella

Year 2s proudly share their latest work

W2 Year 2

To celebrate our unit of inquiry ‘People can make choices to support the sustainability of the Earth’s resources’, the Year 2 girls invited parents and special visitors to a Learning Journey morning. This provided a wonderful opportunity for the girls to share their knowledge and understandings about the Earth’s natural resources and renewable energy. They created mini landscapes to highlight different energy sources. Many learning experiences were captured using time-lapse and slow-motion and visitors enjoyed viewing these science and art experiences. This morning promoted much discussion about the choices families can make to respect our environment such as recycling, composting and saving energy.

Year 9 Dance students teach hip hop moves to our ELC friends

W2 Hip Hop

During the last week of Term 2, some of our ELC friends visited the Year 9 Dance students in the Arts Centre. This class had been given an assignment to create a short dance routine which would engage three and four year old children. They were required to create simple moves in the style of hip hop, accompanied by current pop music. It was just amazing to see how the younger children, who were initially very uncertain of their new environment, participated, listened, laughed and learnt new skills. The Year 9 students were so patient and encouraging in their approach, and it was so lovely to witness the connections being made by all students.

Kate Burnett
Dance Teacher

“Teaching the ELC children was a fun and rewarding experience, but it came with a few challenges. One was engaging all of the children by doing fun movements that fit their abilities. It was quite hard to get their attention sometimes, but it was quickly resolved by coming up with exciting, energetic dance moves that they enjoyed. It was rewarding seeing our work in creating choreography pay off and the smiles on their faces were worth the effort. After teaching the children, I learnt that I had to be fully involved and energetic because that made them more confident and have a great time while busting some moves!” – Matilda Braithwaite

Year 10 Workplace Learning

W2 Workplace Learning

Workplace Learning is an integral part of the Year 10 Personal Learning Plan course and provides the girls with an opportunity to explore and investigate a field or career they may be interested in pursuing. This year the placement was 26 – 30 June and again proved to be an invaluable learning experience . Students ventured into many varied and interesting places such as vet clinics, law firms, kindergartens, hospitals and the University of Adelaide. The feedback from employers was overwhelmingly positive and all of the girls are to be congratulated for the way in which they represented their school, their family and themselves in the wider community.

Thanks goes to the employers who made these experiences possible and also to all of the staff who willingly gave their time to visit students in the workplace.

HOCKEY

Saturday 17 May
Open A – Saints 4 defeated St Dominics 2
The start of Term 3 also brought the first win of the season for Saints and was one of the best team games so far. From the very first minute, the game started with intensity and the girls proved they wanted a win. All played very well, but a special mention should go to Poppie Goldsmith and Carla Lawrence who played particularly well. Our goal scorers of the match were Poppie Goldsmith (2), Grace Packer (1) and Lara Khoury (1). It was a fantastic match by the whole team and we’re looking forward to another fantastic match next weekend. – Lara Khoury (Captain)

Open B – Saints 2 drew with St Dominic’s 2
The girls began with a strong start, making effective passes up the field and creating space which resulted in two brilliant field team goals. With limited rotations, in the second half the girls displayed great determination, but unfortunately St Dominic’s were able to narrow the margin and then draw level late in the game as Saints defended gallantly. It was great to see strong team work and determination the first game back. – Sophie Fry (Coach)

LACROSSE

Saturday 29 July
Under 15 – Saints 15 defeated Burnside 2
Saints had another strong performance keeping the pressure on the top team Brighton. Chelsea Walls led the attack with 7 goals and was supported by Steph Smalls (4) and singles to Saskia Jonats, Hattie Maerschel, Portia Maerschel and Millie Wilkin, demonstrating that it was a great team performance.

Under 11 – Saints Blue 7 defeated St Aloysius 6
It was a very windy morning but nevertheless all of the girls were excited to play. Lara Maione (Year 4) and Madison Dornbusch (Year 3) did well at running into space in attack, which helped them get away from their defender. Once again, all girls fought hard for ground balls, particularly Sophie Lively (Year 3) and Hayley Webb (Year 3). At half time, the girls were down by two goals but they played very well with Jenna Maione (Year 5) doing a fantastic job at consistently catching the ball and passing it quickly in attack. In defence, Mabel Cook (Year 4) did some great intercepts to help turn the ball over and Elysia Scarr (Year 4) in goal impressed everyone with her long clears into space. Goal scorers were Jenna, Lara, Madison and Mabel. All of the girls should be very proud of how they played and enjoy the win. – Lucy Martin (Coach)

Under 11 – Saints White 5 defeated by Wilderness White 9
This week’s game represented an amazing comeback and despite some last-minute absentees, Savannah Walls (Year 3) kindly played to help out. Elizabeth McKernan (Year 4) did an amazing job in goal by keeping Wilderness to just two goals during the entire second half. We also saw our players dominate play and fight hard for the ground balls. The team made excellent pass connections down the field; looking just like a chain reaction. Everyone played to the best of their ability, and the goal shooting was confident and accurate. With a little more work on the defensive marking of our opponents, this team will be hard to defeat. Special mention goes to Coco Dimond (Year 4) and Emily Bates (Year 3) for scoring our goals, and to Alannah Godfrey (Year 4) for setting up the play at the attacking end, and her selfless assists. – Courtney Tasker (Coach)

NETBALL

Saturday 29 July
Open A – Saints 56 defeated Pulteney 43
The Open A girls fought hard in a close match against Pulteney last weekend. The girls worked very well as a team, generating excellent full court pressure that provided opportunity for many defensive turnovers. Special mention should be made of Sivi Sivasuthan’s accuracy in the goal ring. Charlotte White’s defensive turnovers and Holly Cunningham’s ball movement should also be commended. The girls worked hard, executing a very positive performance ahead of the next round of Knockout Netball. The girls continue to improve each week and we look forward to future challenges. – Sophie Freeman and Abbey Goodwin

Open B – Saints 47 drew with Pulteney 47

Open E (Year 11) – Saints 15 defeated by Immanuel 33
Last weekend we had a tough loss against Immanuel. The first quarter proved to be a struggle, however the girls quickly found their feet and played fantastic ending quarters. The girls all worked very well together and are looking forward to improving their teamwork for the next game. – Willo Fowler (Year 11)

Year 10A – Saints 46 defeated Pulteney Open C 30
A fantastic first win of the season for the 10As against Pulteney’s Open C team. Each and every player put in their best effort and listened actively to constructive criticism and encouraged each other to continue pushing through a competitive game. Milly Wood and Georgie Bafile played as a tight team in our goal third with Sarah Carrodus (10Bs) and Rachel Kameniar putting in great defensive effort which resulted in many turnovers. Our mid-court girls, Izzy Villani, Rose Pittman, Anna Pryor and Hannah Lunn, used their voices and worked hard to move the ball down the court into our goal third. I am very excited to have a focussed team and hope to finish this season with great momentum from Saturday’s game. – Grace Russo (Coach)

Year 10B – Saints 9 defeated by Trinity College 64
Unfortunately, the 10Bs went down to a strong Trinity College team. The girls started the game relatively slow in the first quarter which made it very difficult to come back. However, they rekindled as a team for the remainder of the game and used their passing and movement to their advantage. Trinity was a very talented team and proved a challenge for the girls, yet I am proud of how they held their heads high and encouraged one another. Best players to Olivia Law and Teegan Lindsay for their defensive pressure and effort this week. – Emily Wishart (Coach)

Year 9A – Saints 84 defeated Pulteney 16
The team got off to a flying start led by the midfield attack Ruby Bouhamdan and Tesse Parker who were relentless in delivering the ball quickly to shooters Ella Liddy and Jessica Wishart. In defence, Hannah Freeman and Tilly McCormack stood strong to contain Pulteney’s scoring chances. The second quarter continued just as strong with Saints passes hitting targets all over the court that resulted in multiple goals and a lead of 46 to 7 at half-time. Positional changes brought Isabella Bernardi into centre where she continued to apply fantastic pressure ,and again the team moved the ball quickly mid-court to the forward line who scored. As the wind kicked up, the team kept building on their lead with multiple scoring shots and a fantastic team win. – Tilly McCormack (Year 9)

Year 8A – Saints 45 defeated Pulteney 15
The girls had a great first week recording a solid win. As a team, the defensive pressure was outstanding, allowing many shooting opportunities. It was great to see the score reflect the effort the team put in as well as emphasising how well they worked together. Stephanie Smalls had a great game this week in defence, managing to get many intercepts and Kellie Bested also had a great game in attack with accurate and consistent passing. Well done to all the girls, it was a fantastic game and their enthusiasm was great to see. – Amy Wishart (coach)

Year 8B – Saints 11 defeated by Pulteney 34
The girls had a breakthrough game this week and, despite a loss, it was their best game of the season so far. As a team, the girls set out to achieve a specific goal each quarter and it was fantastic to see their determination following this on-court. Best player goes to Thuhansa Hattotuwa who played extremely well in both centre and goal attack! Well done to the team on a great effort. – Sophia West (coach)

Year 7A – Saints 26 defeated Pulteney 12
The team made it back onto the winners list with a solid effort against Pulteney. They pulled together and gave 100% for three out of the four quarters. Tiredness saw us struggle to convert in the last quarter, but at no point did we give up. Thanks to Adele Eaton for playing a full game in GA and shooting at an impressive 81%! Also to our heavily strapped players Mia Humphrey & Sivanthi Sivasuthan who never gave up. Well done girls. – Michelle Blackburn (Coach)

Year 7B – Saints 16 drew with Pulteney 16
The girls had a great start back to netball this term and began the game strong, working well together to play a consistent game. Both attack and defence were very solid and each girl had a huge contribution through intercepts, making leads down the court and shooting. Well done to Izzy Gilroy for her outstanding shooting through the whole game and Adele Russell for her constant intercepts in defence, as she can easily read the play to cause a turnover. The team has improved greatly since the start of the season through all areas of the court and various skills.  – Georgia Naughton (Coach)

Year 7C – Saints 7 defeated by Immanuel 27
The first half was slow, with Immanuel quick to capitalise on Saints’ unforced errors. Despite the end result, the team improved throughout the game to play one of their best games this season. In the second half, every girl went in hard for the ball, demonstrating their perseverance and grit to get back into the game, with a true team effort from all. Special mentions to Gracie Ganzis in defence and Amelie Gray-Combe in the mid-court who both played their best game to date. – Sarah Miller (coach)

AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL

Wednesday 2 August
This term saw the Year 8/9 girls participate in an IGSSA AFL carnival consisting of eight of the ten schools. Just like the seniors, the players were excited and full of enthusiasm, and unlike the seniors who played a round-robin, this carnival was split into two pools.
Saints started strongly with a 19 point to 1 win against Seymour which was highlighted by strong tackling and pressure around the ground. The goals were scored by Ellie Anderson, Olivia Goldsmith and Siena Kulinski.

In game 2, Saints continued the determined play with some excellent defending by Lucy Young, Hannah Freeman, Jess Wishart and Paris Robinson which led to a 19 to 6 win. Goal scorers were: Millie Wilkin (2) and Olivia Goldsmith.

The final pool game saw Saints dominate Wilderness from the outset recording a 20 to 6 win with goals from Chelsea Walls (2) and Millie Wilkin.

Saints drew Concordia in the semi-final and this was an extremely close game on a larger field than the girls were used to, which proved harder to maintain possession and working the ball forward. Concordia put our defence under a lot of pressure, but Saints stood strong. On a number of occasions Saints had chances but were caught with the ball which created turnovers. In defence, Kellie Bested made an amazing smother and again there was strong tackling from Paris Robinson, Tesse Parker and Olivia Goldsmith. Concordia had a chance late in the game to win but kicked a point sending the game into extra-time. It was Concordia who managed to work into attack and, from a scramble in the goal square, scored a point that put them into the final against Immanuel.

Saints to their credit played a rematch against Wilderness in a 3rd v 4th play-off. Saints again dominated recording a resounding 20 to 0 win to finish the day in third position with goals to Millie Wilkin (2) and Chelsea Walls.

It was a fantastic day with all players putting in an amazing effort as well as enjoying the exposure to this new and exciting sport.

JUNIOR BASKETBALL

Wednesday 2 August
Year 6 Blue – Saints 22 defeated by Seymour Green 25
The first game of the season was hard fought and fast. Welcome to Zoe Pool (Year 5) who played her first game of basketball with great determination. Matilda Thomas (also Year 5) showed us her feistiness and scored 6 points. Great running and passing by Sophie Dansie (4 pts) and Willow Stewart-Rattray (4 pts) kept us in the game. Emma Pool (4 pts) surprised herself with two fabulous long shots. Helen Zhang (2 pts) and Bridgette Leach (2 pts) had to do a lot of running and tight defending.  Welcome to Hannah Williams and Georgia Parsons who are also new to our team. They both worked hard to make position to receive the ball. Well done everyone. – Sharon Leach (Coach)

Year 6 White – Saints 28 defeated by Seymour Blue 38
The Year 6 White basketball team played very well, especially since it was their first game. Seymour however played extremely well bringing the half-time score up from 8-24. The girls played well in attack with almost everyone scoring a goal, and used their zone effectively, stopping shots and getting rebounds. – Sarah Matheson (student coach)

Year 5 – Saints 36 defeated Pembroke Green 14
An outstanding effort from the girls in their first game against Pembroke Green. They were all able to dribble with confidence and shoot with accuracy. A special mention to Jasmine Segredos and Sienna Huxtable for scoring the majority of the points. – Josephine Dal Pra (Coach)

JUNIOR NETBALL

Wednesday 2 August
Year 2/3 – Saints 0 defeated by Pembroke Yellow 5
On Wednesday afternoon, the Year 2/3 team played their first game together. While the team lost in wet conditions, they came close to scoring many times. They still managed to have lots of fun even though it was cold and wet, and all played well, especially as it was  the first-ever game of netball for many of the girls. – Emily Braggs (Coach)
