School Sport SA Athletics Championship

In Week 11 of Term 1, 32 of our girls headed to Athletics SA Stadium to compete in the SSSA Secondary Schools Athletics Championships. Our team was without six of our track and field stars due to injury, illness and girls competing in the National Athletics Championships in Perth, as well as girls who had competed in Perth in the days leading up to the SSSA Championships, so were managing their load after competing.

Despite this, we fielded a strong team with great depth across all age groups. Our girls did an outstanding job, often stepping up into events they normally do not compete in. Saints’ spirit was there for all to see and hear, and our girls pushed themselves to the max and cheered on their teammates from the sidelines.

Out of the ten schools competing, we came second behind Trinity College, beating all other IGSSA school competing as well as Brighton Secondary, Loreto College, Mercedes College, Henley High and Faith Lutheran. An outstanding effort and a credit to all who participated. We placed in 27 events out of 64, including ten first places.

To top off a great day, Amelia Sheridan broke two long-standing records. Amelia broke the Open 3000m record by five seconds, which is impressive considering she is only 14 years old. Second place in this race was over 90 second slower than Amelia. In fact, Amelia was in the stands preparing for her next race while some of her competitors were still out on the track racing!

Then Amelia broke our very own Sophie Linn’s 14 and Under 1500m record by six seconds, running a 4:40.33. Sophie ran a 4:46.15 competing for Saints in 2009.

It was a very successful meet and all girls who participated should be proud of their contribution to the School’s overall results.

Interhouse Cross Country

Our Junior and Middle School Interhouse Cross Country was held on the final day of Term 1, and students and spectators were treated to beautiful weather and fiercely contested races. Racing on a new course, the Junior School girls demonstrated fantastic adaptability, particularly the Reception students who competed in the event for the first time, in front of a huge crowd of family and friends. It was Kennion, who narrowly placed first overall ahead of Kilburn for the Junior School, followed by Patteson and Selwyn in third and fourth.

In the Middle School event, first-place getters in the individual races were shared amongst Kennion, Kilburn, and Patteson, however, it was Selwyn who had the most top 10 finishes across all races. By a minuscule margin of just eight points, Kilburn snuck ahead of Kennion to finish in first position, with Selwyn placing third, followed by Patteson in fourth.

A total of 500 Junior and Middle School students raced on the day, and when total scores across both sub-schools were tallied, there were only five points separating the overall first and second place, with Kennion finishing slightly ahead of Kilburn, and Patteson and Selwyn rounding out the remaining places. This was the tightest Interhouse Cross Country Saints has ever seen,  demonstrating how valuable the points awarded for students giving it a go are. Well done girls!

Knockout Netball Year 5/6 Statewide School Sports SA

On Monday 5 May, a group of Year 6 students represented Saints Girls at the School Sport SA Participation Day Netball Carnival, which also served as Round 1 of the Year 5/6 Knockout Netball Competition. The team included; Molly Burnett, Penny Coulter, Ava Duldig, Evie Leedham, Airlie McCarthy, Aria McPherson, Colette Palmieri, Hara Phan and Timethma Senevirathne who all displayed incredible determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Our first three matches were played against Marryatville, East Adelaide and St Aloysius and made up Round 1 of the Knockout Competition. The girls fought hard in their opening game, resulting in a thrilling 12-12 draw against Marryatville. The girls had a strong performance against East Adelaide, comfortably winning 11-1 and then edged out a close win against St Aloysius, 7-6. These results see the team progress through to Round 2 of the Knockout Competition to be played at a later date. It also meant they were through to the cross-over final of the Participation Carnival. The first final saw the team face off against Pulteney, and the girls once again rose to the occasion, claiming a decisive 12-4 victory. Their momentum carried through to the grand final where they took on Trinity Gardens in a competitive and fast-paced match. The girls showed resilience and unity, ultimately winning 14-9 to cap off a remarkable day.
