Design Thinking in the EDGE Program

This week has been full of excitement in the EDGE (extended, differentiated, and gifted students) program as students have been participating in STEM-focused teddy bear themed activities with Dr Rebecca Napier, our new EDGE Key Teacher.  This term’s STEM focus on areas of entrepreneurialism, sustainability, and design-thinking.

Our EDGE program provides learning experiences focused on the iterative design thinking process: empathise, define, ideate, prototype, test, and evaluate.  This approach nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and curiosity – essential skills for real world problem solving among our high-ability STEM students.

Junior School EDGE students participated in Build-a-Bear activity where they created teddy bears with custom-designed t-shirts for children in need through our school-sponsored charity, Treasure Box. Deep empathy was evident in the room as our EDGE students learned about the children who would receive their bears.  The room buzzed with creativity as the girls went through the design process to create their finished bear.  Students will also be writing personalised notes to go with their bear to the recipient.  As part of this series of lessons, we are looking forward to a visit next week from an expert sustainable toymaker, Simon Till.

Meanwhile, our Middle and Senior EDGE students are exploring bee-related projects through design thinking. They participated in an interactive workshop with soon to be doctor Maria Vieira from UniSA’s Education Futures department. The students engaged in new ideas using design thinking, participated in live online surveys, and reflected on their design-based thinking strengths. This enriching workshop was hosted by Dr Napier and Ms Lee.  Please enjoy these pictures, stay posted, and watch this space.
