Wodli Wonders in Ferguson Park
As we reach the halfway point of the term, our daily visits to Ferguson Park have become a highly anticipated and joyful part of our routine in Learning Community 1. The children’s excitement is evident as they eagerly prepare for each outing, embracing the opportunity to spend longer periods of time outdoors. This extended time in nature has had a positive impact on their overall wellbeing, as we see them thriving—physically, emotionally, and socially—while immersed in open-ended play and exploration.
Recently, our inquiry has taken an exciting turn. While exploring, we discovered another Wodli—a traditional hut-like structure—constructed in the park, this time by members of the public. This unexpected find has sparked new questions and discussions among the group:
Who built this Wodli? How is it different from ours? What materials did they use? Why do people build shelters like these?
This discovery has enriched our ongoing exploration of Wodli and traditional dwellings. The children have begun closely studying these structures through a range of creative and hands-on experiences like sketching the design, constructing miniature versions using small sticks and twine, sculpting them with clay, and engaging their senses by touching and examining the natural materials used within. This shared research journey allows the children to become active participants in inquiry-based learning, where their ideas and observations guide the direction of our work.
Being outdoors together not only strengthens our sense of belonging to the local environment but also deepens our relationships with each other as we explore, wonder, and learn as a community. We are grateful for the ongoing opportunity to learn from the land, and we look forward to seeing where the children’s questions will lead us next.

Reconciliation Week Australia
At St Peter’s Girls’ ELC, we joyfully celebrated Reconciliation Week last week by immersing ourselves in cultural experiences like dancing in our beautiful Ferguson Conservation Park. We were honoured to collaborate with the Of Desert and Sea dance company, who led inspiring dance workshops across the ELC and Playgroup. This wonderful experience deepened our understanding of First Nations history and culture while celebrating respect and joy. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiastic participation from our children, families, and educators and grateful to have collaborated with Of Desert and Sea Dance.
Together, we continue to embrace the spirit of reconciliation, bringing us closer to a united and inclusive future.
