ROWING

2024 School Premiership Series #1 Regatta

Saturday 23 November was the School Premiership Series #1 Regatta, the first in a series of four regattas that contribute to both an overall point score competition (the School Premiership) run by Rowing SA, as well as Head of the River qualification and seeding. These regattas are the key opportunities for our crews to test themselves against the competition they will race at the end of the season, and this regatta was the first ‘hit out’.

It was a perfect day for racing, with gentle following conditions producing quick times. The Junior squad produced strong results in the morning, sweeping the Schoolgirl 8/9 B, C, D and E divisions! The 8/9 B crew had an especially impressive outcome, producing a huge sprint in the final 250m to take the lead in a hotly contested race. For our 7/8 crews, this was only their second regatta, despite which they achieved strong results however, the most impressive part of their performance was the improvements each crew made between rounds.

By the afternoon session rain had set in, forcing our Intermediate and Senior squads to brave the miserable (although perfectly row-able) weather. The Intermediate raced strongly in their heats, placing 2nd and 4th, but due to injury the 9/10 A crew was scratched from the final – the B crew however repeated their heat result placing a competitive 4th. For the Senior squad this regatta introduced a new format of racing, with all Schoolgirl Eight crews entered in the same category – the first challenge was to qualify for the A Final. The 1st 8+ achieved this with a strong performance in the heat, achieving a time that equalled their PB from the 2023/24 season. We were also able to boat a 1st 4+ for the first time this season, thanks to Zara Perrone racing in both Intermediate and Senior crews, with the 1st 4+ racing strongly in the heat.

Although Term 4 is almost over, our rowers have two more regattas before the end of 2024 – the next challenge is to keep training over summer to carry these strong results into Term 1 2025!

Young Australian of the Year Breakfast

Last week, I along with St Peter’s Girls’ Junior School Sport Coordinator, Megan Harper, had the privilege of attending a breakfast at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre, where Emma McKeon, Australia’s most successful Olympian and current Young Australian of the Year, shared her inspiring journey across three Olympic Games. Emma spoke about overcoming challenges, the lessons she’s learned, and what it takes to achieve success at the highest level. Her greatest piece of advice was simple yet powerful: find something you love and work at it every single day. Whether it’s in sports, school, or another passion, dedication and persistence can turn dreams into reality.

She also encouraged us to believe in ourselves, aim high, and surround ourselves with a strong, positive tribe. These are values we see in action every day at Saints, where we support and inspire one another to achieve what we might think is impossible. Sadly, Emma announced her retirement from competitive swimming this week, marking the end of an extraordinary career. As a swimmer, it has been an honour to watch her incredible journey unfold. Her legacy will continue to inspire so many of us to dream big and chase greatness.

Whether your goals are Olympic-sized or closer to home, we all have the potential to do extraordinary things. I encourage all of us to take Emma’s advice to heart—let’s continue to support one another, aim for greatness, and build an environment where everyone can flourish. Together, we can achieve so much!

Charlotte makes finals in the 2024 South Australian School Sports Awards

We are excited to share that Year 11 student Charlotte McAuliffe was recently named a finalist for the 2024 South Australian School Sports Awards.

According to the Adelaide Advertiser:
“There is no denying McAuliffe is a star on the track, winning a truckload of medals in every colour at a national and international level.
The Year 11 student is ranked number one in the Under 18 Female in Australia for the 400m with a season’s best of 53.65 secs.
She has also been selected for Athletics Australia Pathway Transition Program which supports targeted under-20 athletes who are demonstrating potential to achieve Athletics Australia’s High Performance goals and targets at Olympic and Paralympic Games, World Champs and Commonwealth Games.”

We are so proud of you Charlotte, we can’t wait to see the amazing things you’ll achieve.
