Debating Global Issues at HMUN Sydney
Over the past four days, I participated in HMUN (Harvard Model United Nations), which is a conference originally held in Boston, that came to Sydney this year. During the conference, students represented different countries and debated real-world issues. I represented the Netherlands and worked with other delegates within my committee to discuss solutions, negotiate with other countries, create draft resolution papers, and speak during formal debates and a procedure called a moderated caucus.
The main topic my committee focused on was the detention and deportation of stateless individuals. This involved discussing human rights, international law, and possible ways countries could work together to improve conditions and protection for stateless people. Throughout the conference, we had to work collaboratively with other delegates, listen to different perspectives, and create realistic compromises and solutions together.
Throughout the experience, I learned a lot about teamwork, diplomacy, public speaking, and international relations. It helped me improve my confidence when speaking in front of others and thinking quickly under pressure.
Overall, HMUN was an amazing and rewarding experience, and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to participate.

Celebrating Spanish Language and Culture
This term, the IB Spanish ab initio classes had the honour of hosting 50 students from four schools for the 2026 Spanish Quiz Night, organised by the Spanish Teacher’s Association. Throughout the night, the students participated in numerous games and activities, covering topics related to Spanish language and culture. Highlights included the Tongue Twister competition, the energy brought by the hosts, and socialising with like-minded students studying Spanish. Our students enjoyed the experience and would love to host again!
