The Year 2 cohort enjoyed a wonderful excursion to the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre on Tuesday, 19 May. It was a beautiful day filled with learning, connection, and hands-on experiences that linked closely to our current Unit of Inquiry.
During the excursion, students participated in two engaging sessions. In the first session, students worked with Aunty Janice to learn the traditional skill of basket weaving. Using raffia, students carefully practised weaving techniques and discovered the patience and creativity involved in this important cultural practice. Many students were proud of the weaving skills they developed throughout the session.
The second session involved a cultural tour of the surrounding area, where students learnt about Kaurna stories, traditions, and the many ways Kaurna people used the land for food, cooking, and daily life. Students were fascinated to hear how deeply connected the Kaurna people are to Country and how the land provides important resources and meaning.
The warm weather and beautiful surroundings made it a lovely opportunity for students and teachers to spend time together outside the classroom while deepening their understanding of Aboriginal culture and history.
This excursion strongly connected to our Unit of Inquiry, particularly our lines of inquiry exploring “where we live” and “the connections people make with the land.” It was a valuable and memorable learning experience for everyone involved.
