Poetry in Action

On Monday 26 May, Year 7 to 11 students were entertained and educated by Poetry in Action. Consisting of three actors, the troupe travels the country presenting dynamic performances aimed at deconstructing poetry and convincing students of the power of language. The Years 7, 8 and 9 students viewed a production in which the actors told the story of several Muses leaving the divine realm to teach a mortal about creating raps, songs and poetry as a way of communicating emotions and concepts. The 45-minute play was a fast-paced, fun way to educate students about the forms, features and purpose of poetic texts. The Years 10 and 11 considered how language devices can be used to persuade audiences, the actors drawing upon speeches, film, poetry and well-known historical events to explore concepts. Cleverly, the play evoked those very elements that it explored: pathos, ethos and logos. Both performances used dramatic storytelling as an educational tool and thereby were relevant to students of both Drama and English.

Student Sport Mentoring Program

Recently, I facilitated a workshop with the students involved in the Student Mentoring Program to build skills in drill adaptation for engagement and inclusion. The session entailed small games of capture the flag which students played in 2-3 minute intervals. At the end of each interval, we discussed and then implemented changes to the game to see if the game became more/less challenging. As a group we spoke about what changes we would make for specific age groups and then some drills that could be adapted in each mentor’s respective sports. The girls were engaged and willing to share their ideas and experiences with myself and their peers.
