Bridging School and University: Microcredential Pilot Launches at Saints Girls

St Peter’s Girls’ School is proud to announce the launch of an exciting new initiative for 2025: the Microcredential in Health and Medical Sciences, an exclusive pilot program developed in partnership with Flinders University.

This program, open to Year 10 students only, provides a unique opportunity to experience university-style learning while still at school. Delivered through a blend of online modules, interactive workshops, and hands-on simulations at Flinders University, this microcredential will empower students to explore the world of health and medical science in depth—well before they enter their senior years.

Why Microcredentials?

Microcredentials are short, targeted courses that certify specific knowledge, skills, or competencies. They are rapidly gaining traction worldwide, particularly in the tertiary and professional sectors. According to the OECD, microcredentials offer a flexible and accessible way for learners to build employability, engage in lifelong learning, and respond to a changing job market. They also bridge a key gap between secondary and tertiary education, providing students with clearer pathways into university courses and future careers.

In this pilot program, students will:

  • Explore real-world case studies in diagnostics and digital health
  • Attend workshops with medical science professionals and university academics
  • Complete a reflective portfolio, assessed jointly by Saints Girls and Flinders University
  • Receive a university-recognised micro credential to support future applications

Students will complete most of the program outside of school hours, developing their independence and time management while engaging in meaningful, future-focused learning.

The Process

All Year 10 students will be introduced to this opportunity during Week 6. At that time, we’ll share details about how to apply, selection criteria, and key dates. Applications will open Thursday of Week 6, and will close Thursday of Week 8.

This pilot reflects our commitment to innovative, real-world learning pathways—ensuring our students are not only prepared for Year 11 and 12, but are also inspired and equipped for life beyond Saints. It reflects over two years of evolving partnership, and we sincerely thank all those involved, in particular, external collaborator Mark Colsey for his continuing support.

Our Health and Medical Sciences microcredential is just the beginning. From 2026 and beyond, we aim to broaden our offerings to include microcredentials across a range of professional fields and industries, ensuring that Saints Girls students continue to benefit from relevant, real-world learning pathways that align with their interests and aspirations.

Microcredentials can provide a potential competitive advantage for university admissions and future career opportunities. Flinders University are actively exploring how these credentials may enhance and support alternative entry pathways for students into the future.

We’re excited to launch this future-facing initiative and look forward to supporting the first group of microcredentialed students at St Peter’s Girls.
