Blazing New Trails: Year 6 Students Innovate High-Tech Solutions for Bushfire Challenges!

A group of creative Year 6 students are setting the stage on fire metaphorically! St Peter’s Girls’ School is thrilled to have secured a grant from Makers Empire for the Naturally Brave competition. This unique initiative raises awareness of natural disasters while fostering resilience and empathy among young learners. Thanks to funding from the Australian Government’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Disaster Ready Funding, this cutting-edge program empowers students from 20 South Australian schools to think big and use technology to tackle real-world challenges. And guess what? We even won a 3D printer to help bring our girls’ groundbreaking ideas to life!

Our talented students—Zara, Maddie, Emily, Amelia, Indy, Olivia, Mimi, Georgia, Hannah, and Ivy—have eagerly embraced this challenge. They are channelling their creativity into developing innovative solutions to help those affected by bushfires. The girls have participated in several hands-on experiences to deepen their understanding and empathy. We were excited to see a fire truck on site just last week. Carly and Simon, firefighters from Burnside CFS, shared powerful first-hand stories about the harsh realities of fighting fires and protecting communities. This real-world exposure has ignited their imaginations as they prepare for the Makers Empire Competition in Term 4!

And the journey doesn’t stop there! The girls have also partnered with Fleet Space Technologies, a leader in space innovation, to explore how cutting-edge satellite technology, drones, and AI can revolutionise bushfire management by providing real-time data for emergency responses. A visit to Cleland Wildlife Park offered another eye-opening experience, where the girls met a bandicoot rescued from the 2020 fires and learned about the challenges of burned wildlife. The education officer guided them through local flora and fauna and shared strategies to reduce the spread of fast-moving fires.

To further expand their knowledge of bushfire management, we were fortunate to have Aerotech aerial water bombers, crucial during bushfires and proud parents of some of our students, come in to share their expertise. Their insights into aerial firefighting techniques and rapid response strategies have given the girls a deeper appreciation of how quick thinking and technology can save lives and property during emergencies.

With all these invaluable experiences and partnerships under their belts, our Year 6 students are buzzing with ideas and ready to dazzle us with their creative, tech-driven solutions to build stronger, more resilient communities!

Thank you to Makers Empire, Jessica and Sam McCabe from Aerotech, Carly and Simon from Burnside CFS, Andrea Smith from Cleland Wildlife Park, and Mike Kenneally from Fleet Space Technologies for making this learning journey possible!

Year 4s Share Their Learning

On Friday 6 September, the Year 4 students welcomed their parents and special guests to showcase their learning from Term 3.

Guests had the opportunity to explore our poetry anthologies, admire our marble runs, investigate the properties of different materials, and join us for a game of Mancala.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the parents and guests for their ongoing support and for celebrating the children’s achievements with us. Your enthusiasm and participation made for an unforgettable afternoon.

Year 2 Girls Embark on Unforgettable First School Camp Adventure

The buzz and anticipation surrounding the Year 2 girls’ first school camp reached its peak recently as they set off for a two-day adventure at AFL Max.

The camp itinerary was packed with exciting activities designed to engage and educate. Over the two days, the girls rotated through four different activities that included learning about healthy eating, going rock climbing, participating in a scavenger hunt and playing lots of different games.  The ‘Aerial’ zone with trampolines and jump pits was a clear favourite. Ms Taylor even joined in for a trampoline bounce!

Dinner was a much-anticipated event, and the lasagne served was a resounding hit. Following dinner, the evening continued with more engaging games, before winding down with a movie night. The group settled in for a cinematic treat, watching two movies complete with popcorn, chocolate donuts, sleep masks, and glow sticks – an evening of pure fun and friendship.

The next day, the fun continued with more activities before it was time to bid farewell to AFL Max. The staff, ever generous, presented the girls with caps and footballs as keepsakes of their adventure. The final creative endeavour took place at Studio Vino, where Gemma and Sarah guided the girls in a paint pouring session, resulting in vibrant and unique artworks.

After a morning of artistic fun, we were starving and thrilled to head back to school for lunch. Mrs Smith had picked up hot chips and nuggets, which we devoured before parents came to pick up the students. The camp proved to be a resounding success, brimming with laughter, learning, and lifelong memories. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to making this first school camp an unforgettable experience for the Year 2 girls. Here’s to many more adventures to come!
