News from Learning Community 1

Central Idea – Celebrations can strengthen our connections with each other and the world around us.

Over the past two weeks, Learning Community 1 has engaged in an in-depth exploration of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. We are fortunate to be guided by the expertise of Mrs Fern, who has been sharing her wealth of knowledge and personal experience celebrating Diwali through traditional clothing, stories, rituals and food.

Diwali, characterised by its vibrant colours, symbols, and diverse materials, has provided our youngest learners with the opportunity to inquire and expand their cultural awareness through creative languages. These include dance, music, clay, light and shadow play, mark making and the use of loose parts. Our lightroom has been transformed into an immersive space for dress-ups, music, and movement. It has brought together children, educators, and family members alike to relish in the creative expression inspired by traditional Hindi dance and song. Through tactical clay, the children have experimented with creating traditional diyas, or clay lamps unique to Diwali festivities and rituals. In shaping, moulding and decorating the clay, the children have connected through conversation, remarking on and celebrating the creative efforts of their peers.

Our encounters with light evolved and transformed throughout the week. By exploring and being immersed in curated spaces to play with light and shadow, the children collaborated to recreate fireworks with glow-in-the-dark markers, torches and lamps. Other symbols of Diwali, such as circular Rangoli designs, have been celebrated, explored and represented using loose parts and collaged, recycled materials.

It has been a joy to witness the children’s wonder and curiosity in encountering diverse perspectives, cultural knowledge, traditions, and rituals through creative languages and open-ended materials. Nurturing creative thinking and imagination, the dynamic nature of creative languages serves as a powerful tool to enhance cultural competencies and foster connections among individuals and groups. We look forward to continuing our exploration of different celebrations in the final weeks of the term, as we engage with friends, family, and the community to celebrate our transitioning children, the end-of-year concert, and the Christmas season.
