2026 Summer Intercol
What an exciting Intercol we had this year against Walford. It was one of the tightest contests we’ve had in a number of years, as well as featuring some of the most competitive and highly skilled matches I’ve seen in my time at the School.
It began with Rowing at the Head of the River. This was very close, with Walford taking the trophy five wins to four.
Next up was Tennis, with our Premier League, Division 1 and Division 2 teams playing Walford on grass at Kensington. The grass took a little getting used to for both teams, but once everyone settled, the quality of tennis on display was outstanding. Matches were close throughout, with three coming down to tie-breakers. Walford were the eventual winners, 16 sets (119 games) to Saints’ 14 sets (125 games).
This gave Walford a 2–0 lead heading into Basketball. For Saints, this meant we had to win three from three sports for the remainder of the week to retain the Belinda Rosser/Jan MacDonald Trophy for the third year in a row. Still to come were Basketball, Cricket and Volleyball.
On Wednesday, our Basketball teams rose to the challenge, with our Senior B and Middle C teams taking on Walford’s Senior B and Middle B teams. At the end of both matches, it was one apiece, meaning it came down to score difference. Saints came away nine-point winners.
At 1–2 heading into Cricket, the pressure was on.
Our Cricket Captain and Sport Prefect, Lucy Lowry, and her team stepped up when it mattered. Winning the toss and sending Walford in, they made 3/58 from their 12 overs. Needing 59 to secure victory and keep Intercol alive, Lucy opened the batting with Amelia Sheridan in a cautious start. Amelia departed early and Charlotte Dodd came to the crease. Charlotte and Lucy then took control, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and both retiring with Saints needing fewer than five runs to win. Matilda Paterson and A Grade debutant Samaire Soodan guided us home in the ninth over, with Samaire hitting two beautiful drives down the ground to finish.
The girls had done it—the tally now stood at 2–2 heading into Volleyball on Saturday morning.
There were six Volleyball matches on Saturday, with all results contributing to the overall Intercol outcome. Saints started strongly, securing three wins in the 8:00am timeslot. Our Senior C Blue, Middle A and Middle B teams all won 2 sets to 0.
With the result coming down to wins, sets and points, this meant we needed just one more set to secure victory. Our Senior C White team came up against a very strong Walford C1 side, going down 0–2, while our Senior B team came from one set down to win 2–1 against Walford Senior B. This win ensured we had retained the trophy for another year.
Our Senior A team was still to play in a standalone match at 10:00am. The court was lined with Saints and Walford students, and the cheering and support were deafening. Although the result of this match would not affect the overall Intercol outcome, you wouldn’t have known it from the effort and standard of play on display. The teams were one set all heading into the third, with Walford winning a nail-biter 27–25.
Intercol was over for another year, with Saints coming from 0–2 down to retain the trophy 3–2 after all five sports were completed. Congratulations to all the girls who participated and supported throughout the week, and to our coaches and staff who remained calm and kept our girls focused during what was an incredibly tight contest.
