Vale Doug Stott
This week, we received the sad news that Doug Stott passed away.
Doug was a highly respected and much-loved Principal of the School from 1976 to 1996, and he will be fondly remembered by decades of students and teachers for his unwavering commitment and transformative contribution to the School.
Doug Stott was educated at St Peter’s College, where he served as School Captain in 1954, before completing a Bachelor of Science at Adelaide University. After further studies at Cambridge University and the University of New England, he began his teaching career with a clear philosophy: “I saw teaching as an opportunity to help other people.” Following positions in England and Melbourne, Mr Stott embarked on his remarkable 20 year journey as Principal of St Peter’s Girls’ School in 1976.
Mr Stott firmly believed that there should be choices and chances for every girl to do her best, both in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities. His philosophy extended beyond academics – he maintained that contact with students was essential for successful leadership. True to this belief, he continued to teach Year 11 and Year 12 Chemistry classes throughout his tenure as Headmaster, endearing himself to the many students who passed through Saints Girls during his leadership.
During his time as Principal, Doug oversaw an ambitious program of development that fundamentally transformed the School’s facilities. His vision brought us many of the spaces we still enjoy today, including:
- The gymnasium and School pool
- The Humzy Theatre
- The Junior School Library and Senior Library extensions
- St Michael’s Wing
- The Art Centre and IT Centre
- Extensions to the Music and Drama Departments
- Enlarged Science Laboratories
- The conversion of Chiverton from a residence to the Administration building
As a Chemistry teacher himself, Doug was instrumental in strengthening the mathematics and sciences curriculum at the School. His forward-thinking approach made Saints Girls one of the first schools in South Australia to embrace computer technology, introducing computer science into the curriculum well ahead of its time. This early commitment to innovation laid the foundation for the strong STEM presence that the School enjoys today.
Doug Stott’s two decades of leadership created a legacy that continues to benefit our School community. His belief in providing every girl with the facilities, equipment, and opportunities to excel has shaped the Saints Girls experience for generations of students.
Here is a newspaper article from the Advertiser, celebrating Doug’s retirement, which we feel sums him up just perfectly!
