Andi Brings Home the FUSE Cup

Four students from St Peter’s Girls travelled to Scotch College last week to compete in the FUSE Cup 2024 – Mario Kart 8 – eSports State Tournament. What is eSports you may ask? A multiplayer video game played competitively for spectators, typically by professional gamers. What is Mario Kart 8 you may ask? It’s racing with Nintendo Characters around maps on Karts and Bikes.

Mr Coulter, Mr Irvine and our School eSport captain Mya travelled with the team, and it was great to see Andi Symons and Eva Chassiotis make it through to the finals. In a tight contest, both girls placed in the top four, with Andi winning overall, crowning her State Champion.

The FUSE Cup National Championships will occur next term in the Gold Coast on 18 November. We wish Andi all the best and hope the RNG will be in your favour on the day.

This event has been a great opportunity for each team member being able to compete against other schools, learning the importance of eSafety and seeking help utilising government services such as the Kids Help Line.

Well done to all the girls who competed, and a huge congratulations to Andi on bringing home the FUSE Cup trophy!

Keep an eye out for more APEX-led competitions in the future!

Saints Success at Debating in Chinese

Recently, students Ke (Martina) Zhang, Siqi (Maggie) Zheng, Yiru (Gia) Wang, Yimeng (Bella) Xu, and Zijing (Phoebe) Liu achieved 2nd place in the South Australian High School Chinese Debating Competition. The girls have provided their reflections on the experience.

Last month, we had the opportunity to take part in a Chinese Debate Competition hosted by Adelaide University Chinese Debate Union. This experience has undoubtedly sharpened our language and logical thinking skills in all aspects. This debate contest gave me a new understanding of the Chinese language. Chinese is not only a communication tool, but also a way of thinking and a carrier of culture. Through debate, we can better express ourselves and understand others, which is of great significance for improving language ability and thinking quality. I look forward to having more opportunities to continue exploring debate and improve my overall thinking skills.
-Ke (Martina) Zhang

I have learned a lot from this debate. Throughout the weeks we have been working together, I felt satisfied with the results and every debate we have been paying effort to. I am happy to have this opportunity to work with my friends.
-Yimeng (Bella) Xu

This debate competition has been incredibly meaningful to me. I’m deeply grateful to have worked with such a fantastic team and coaches. Meeting competitors from various schools during the tournament not only sharpened my debating skills but also enhanced my critical thinking. These experiences have undoubtedly enriched my life. Debate is a journey full of challenges and opportunities, and I will continue to approach every future tournament with a positive mindset. While we faced our share of ups and downs in this competition, I am more determined than ever to keep moving forward. I believe there are infinite possibilities for us to explore and realise in the future. With a bright future ahead, I hope we can achieve even greater success in our future debates.
-Yiru (Gia) Wang

This is the first time I’ve ever participated in debating. Before this, I never imagined myself being a debater. The idea of standing in front of an audience, articulating my thoughts and defending my position, seemed daunting. However, I’m so lucky to have such supportive teammates and coach who gave me strength and encouragement, helping me gain confidence and improve my abilities. Although the three weeks of this competition were very busy and full of new challenges, I felt a huge sense of satisfaction and accomplishment afterwards. I’m much closer with my teammates, developed an interest in debating, improved my critical thinking and language articulation, and more confident in using the Chinese language. With this experience, I’m more willing to try new things, and I hope we will learn more and achieve more in our future journey.
