Indigenous Literacy Day

Indigenous Literacy Day takes place annually on the first Wednesday of September to raise awareness about the educational challenges faced by Australia’s Indigenous communities. The theme for 2024 is Be A Proud Voice for Country, celebrating the stories, cultures, and languages of over 250 different language groups.

Literacy is a crucial skill that opens pathways to many opportunities. However, many Indigenous communities in Australia face significant barriers to literacy including limited access to quality educational resources. By supporting literacy in these communities, we help empower Indigenous children and young people to achieve their full potential.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on providing culturally appropriate books and learning resources to remote Indigenous communities. Their efforts ensure that children can read stories in their own languages and see themselves reflected in the books they read. Additionally, the ILF organises a fundraising event in partnership with the Sydney Opera House to raise money for literacy books, stationery, and other resources for Indigenous communities. This event highlights the importance of reading, learning new languages and developing literacy skills.

There are many ways you can contribute to supporting Indigenous literacy, including donating to the ILF, where your contributions will go directly to those in need. Another way to support this cause is by educating yourself and others about the importance of literacy and the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous Australians. By supporting literacy initiatives, we are not only helping children to read and write, but also preserving and promoting the diverse cultures of Australia’s First Nations people.
