Chess Club go to Finals!

Over the last 2 terms, the Junior School Chess club (Years 3 to 6) met each Thursday after school for a coaching session before heading to matches at Seymour College on Friday afternoon, where we had two teams competing against other schools from the local area. Dilini Ranathunga deserves a special mention as she made it through the entire season at Seymour undefeated – an amazing achievement! Our girls have shown resilience and excellent sportsmanship during these matches and our teams finished second and third in the local round. This meant they made it into the Grand Final last Friday at St Peter’s College, where the winners from each area battled it out for over three hours until an overall winning school was crowned. Although our girls didn’t win the night, they learnt so much and developed as players. They showed commitment and determination, their coach and I are very proud of everything they achieved.

Mid-Year Receptions Explore our School Community

This term, we welcomed our Mid-Year Reception students to our School community, and the girls quickly settled into their new routines.

Inquiry based learning forms a central part of our curriculum as it encourages and supports ‘out of the box’ thinking, strengthens the students’ ability to communicate and work as a team as well as cultivate curious and competent lifelong learners. Our Unit of Inquiry focused on the Central Idea: ‘We belong to a community where we can grow and learn together.’ We began with the provocation ‘What is a community?’ to discover the girls’ prior knowledge and then we discussed the new people we would soon meet in our School community.

Throughout the term, we met many staff, such as Ms Skewes, Ms Taylor, Ms Smith, and Mr Fuller. Mr Fuller brought in his Olympic torch and medals from his time competing in the Paralympics – amazing!

Throughout our Inquiry, we also explored new parts of our school community such as the Gym, Art Studio, Science labs and attended School Assemblies and Chapel. After exploring maps and models, the girls arranged into small groups, and each chose a place within our school to make a mini model. The girls first drew a design and discussed how they would build their model and what materials they would use. Throughout the building process, the girls used skills such as problem-solving, design, mathematical thinking and had to communicate as a group, be persistent, take risks, use trial and error and resilience, which produced some amazing models.

Here are some photos of the girls planning and building their models and the finished product: Our School Community!

Year 4 Learning Adventure

On Friday 20 September, the Year 4 students ventured to the South Australian Maritime Museum. This excursion connected with our central idea, ‘Exploration has led to discovery and change,’ under the transdisciplinary theme, ‘Where we are in place and time.’

The students engaged in a variety of activities, including a self-guided tour of the museum’s current exhibition, a tour of a replica ketch, and a presentation about Australia’s first encounters. They also enjoyed a boat ride on the Archie Badenoch along the Port River.
