Architecture in Nature – Uncovering Intricate and Complex Architectural Designs in our Natural World

This term, our children have continued to express their interest and curiosity towards the architecture of birds’ nests. In the Pathway room, we observed our children demonstrating their capacity to be challenged and extended, which inspired us to begin researching and identifying other structures that are created by animals. The children began realising that other ‘animals can be architects too’ as they explored the different ways that spiders make their webs, and bees collaborate to create their beehives.

Children were invited to analyse hexagonal patterns through collage provocations and loose parts. They have also explored the intricate lines in spiderwebs through photography, graphic language and weaving experiences. These experiences have allowed children to deepen their knowledge through observing these natural architectural designs in our ELC environment, asking questions and learning from each other.

The Magic of Playgroup in Nature

At Playgroup, we know that time spent outdoors is more than just playtime. It is an opportunity for our youngest children to foster a deep connection with the natural world and develop a sense of responsibility for its care. Our Playgroup families recently visited Ferguson Park for a nature loop walk and exploratory play. The children and families were immersed in a sensory-rich environment as they walked along the path and over the creek bed. The feel of the earth beneath their feet, the sounds of birds calling in the trees, and the sight of wildlife in its natural habitat created an experience of connection, one that cannot be replicated indoors. Nature gives children the chance to interact with their surroundings in a way that fosters a deeper understanding of the world they live in. During our Ferguson Park visit, the children naturally gravitated towards group activities, forming small bonds through their shared discoveries. These experiences lay the foundation for empathy, communication and teamwork, all essential skills for their future social development.

Playgroup runs every Wednesday during school term from 9.30 – 11am. Please contact Kathy McCabe at kmccabe@stpetersgirls.sa.edu.au for more information of the weekly event.

Congratulations Chloe Skoss!

Congratulations to Chloe Skoss, our ELC Pathway Ferguson Teacher, on successfully completing her Master of Leading Education from Edith Cowan University. As a dedicated lifelong learner, Chloe recognised areas for growth in her pedagogical practice, which has fuelled her passion to continuously challenge herself. This degree has empowered her to redefine her perspective on successful leadership and what is required in the ever-evolving landscape of education. We are proud of your achievements, Chloe!

Sun Smart in the ELC

As spring arrives and the weather warms up, it’s important to stay sun smart. Following the Cancer Council’s advice, our Centre has clear guidelines for sun protection, especially on days when the UV index reaches 3 or above. Recently, the UV levels have been higher during certain parts of the day, so we ask families to be mindful of the following:

Please ensure your child’s hat is returned to the ELC so we can be prepared for warmer days throughout the rest of this term and into Term 4. Outdoor activities, including visits to Ferguson Conservation Park, are an important part of our program, and children need their hats to enjoy these spaces safely.

To help us keep everything organised, please label your child’s hat clearly with their name. Thank you for supporting our sun safety practices. For more information, please visit the Cancer Council website.

Save the Date to our End of Year Celebration

To ELC Families,

Please save the date to our much-loved ELC End of Year Celebration on Friday 29 November, 5.15pm at St Peter’s Girls’ School. This community event is a favourite amongst our Centre, and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the year with a picnic gathering, carols, food, and more. More information about this event will be announced in Term 4. We hope to see you there!
