Success at Nationals
On Saturday 29 June, the Year 7 da Vinci team, accompanied by Becca Burton-Howard and Cindy Pitkin travelled to Sydney to compete in the National Finals of the da Vinci Decathlon, an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students across ten distinct disciplines.
The theme for this year’s National competition was ‘Environment’ and the students worked very hard in the three weeks between the State Finals and Nationals to prepare for possible problems and tasks. Their efforts were rewarded, with the team placing in the top three for six out of the ten disciplines. They achieved first place in Ideation and Science, second in Creative Producers and third in Art & Poetry, English and Legacy. Additionally, they placed fourth in Cartography. These amazing results meant they were awarded second place overall for Year 7, making Saints Girls the top-performing girls’ school in the country in Year 7 for this year’s competition and equal top across all year levels for girls’ schools. This is Saints Girls’ best-ever result at da Vinci Decathlon Nationals!
The students worked so hard to prepare for both the State and National competitions, attending regular practices before school and at lunch times as well as additional sessions on weekends and in the holidays. We are very proud of both their efforts and their achievements.
Here are some of their reflections:
The da Vinci Decathlon was a truly unique experience. It was so fun to challenge our thinking in abstract ways across a wide variety of subjects taught beyond the classroom. It was wonderful to form such a bond with my peers and teammates. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I learned invaluable lessons and techniques that I will carry forward for the rest of my life.

At da Vinci Nationals, I gained invaluable insights into the dynamics of academic competition, emphasising the importance of meticulous preparation and effective communication. I enjoyed the chance to interact with my team and enhance my problem-solving skills under pressure.
Bonnie
I learnt a lot during da Vinci, not only about the topic but also about my teammates which I believe helped build stronger bonds with each other.
Courtney
I found that through my participation in the da Vinci Decathlon, my problem-solving, analysis, width of knowledge and motivation to learn have further developed. It was an exciting and enriching journey where I had the privilege to bond with other members of the School community.

A trip to Sydney, a stimulating competition, and a shiny medal? What more could I ask for? In the three days we were away, we have been able to work together, bond, and develop friendships, as well as making history for Saints Girls. This achievement was a huge surprise for all of us (as well as the moving train seats) and having such amazing teammates has been a blessing. I couldn’t have asked for more resilient, diligent, and empathetic friends for our team.
