News from Learning Community 2
Children in Learning Community 2 have enjoyed a positive and purposeful start to the year as they settle into their learning environment and build connections with one another. This term, our Central Idea, “Welcoming environments can nurture relationships and build a strong sense of identity and community,” has guided our learning experiences and shaped the ways in which children engage with their peers and surroundings.
To support children in developing a sense of belonging and independence, they have been invited to sign themselves into the classroom each morning. This daily ritual encourages name recognition, early writing skills, and a sense of responsibility, while reinforcing that each child is a valued member of our learning community. Children have also been busy creating self-portraits, which are proudly displayed throughout the classroom. These artworks celebrate individuality and help children recognise both their own identity and the uniqueness of others.
Further extending this focus on identity and belonging, children have created their own “mini-me” figures – photographs laminated and attached to wooden blocks, which they can place in our “Mini ELC” dollhouse. This imaginative experience supports social play, storytelling and emotional connection, allowing children to see themselves represented within their learning environment.
Throughout these experiences, opportunities for literacy and numeracy development have been intentionally embedded. Children have practised forming letters in their names, explored visual representation through drawing and construction, and engaged in meaningful conversations that build oral language skills and confidence. Fine motor development has been supported through cutting, drawing and creative activities linked to our self-portrait work.
We are also looking forward to celebrating Lunar New Year on Monday, which will provide another meaningful opportunity for children to explore culture, traditions and community connections. This celebration will further support our inquiry into belonging and help children develop respect and appreciation for the diversity within our School.
We are proud of the way children are embracing new rituals, building friendships and developing confidence as learners. We look forward to continuing to nurture their sense of identity, curiosity and connection throughout the term.
