Malaika’s Fashion First
Last week, St Peter’s Girls’ Year 12 IB student Malaika McLeod organised the School’s first ever fashion show for a CAS project to raise funds for charity.
Malaika reached out to various South Australian clothes companies and received an overwhelming response with four companies committing to assist her. The project aimed to promote South Australian fashion brands to younger generations and encourage them to buy locally to support the South Australian economy. On the night, fashion labels Iris & Wool located in the country town of Burra, Binny, located in Hyde Park, Karma East and the newly established Jeimont Sport, showcased clothes ranging from winter wear to smart casual, casual and activewear.
There was a charge of $2 for entry to the show and money raised was donated to Oxfam Australia. Oxfam Australia was identified as the ideal recipient based on its reputation as a nonprofit organisation that fights to improve the working conditions for workers on minimum wages in the clothes/fashion industry globally. The fun-filled event was well attended and Malaika managed to raise about $320, attendees left the event with a smile and gave her a big thumbs up. Here is a snapshot of some of the clothes that were showcased.
A huge thank you to the Performing Arts Department team – Ella, Scott and Ms Kitching – for their help with the lighting, music, and set design, and for ensuring the smooth running of the show. Thank you to Year 10 Cleo Conor and her younger sister Sasha for filming and editing. We also appreciate the models from different schools, Mr Searle for his support and direction as a CAS supervisor, Ms Sutton and Ms McGregor for their assistance. A special thank you to Malaika’s mum for all the support during the entire process of the project. Lastly, a heartfelt thanks to the four companies, Iris & Wool, Karma East, Binny and Jeimont Sport that supported this project.
