A Walk Among the Blooms: Discovering the Adelaide Botanic Gardens

Exploring our Natural Eco-systems: A Journey to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens

On Monday 31 May, the Year 4s embarked on an excursion to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens as part of our ‘Sharing the Planet’ Unit of Inquiry.

Our trip provided numerous opportunities for students to delve into the intricate interconnectedness that exists within the plant world.

As we wandered through the gardens, students witnessed the symbiotic relationships plants have with each other and the environment. From the towering River Red Gums providing shade and shelter to the delicate flowers attracting pollinators, every plant plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

One of the highlights was a guided tour led by Trent Hill, an Aboriginal storyteller and educator, who shared his knowledge about the traditional uses of trees and plants by Aboriginal people.

The girls gained a deeper understanding of how plants were used by Indigenous people and how insects and other animals rely on the delicate eco-system provided by these plants and the long history of the Kuarna People.

Throughout this Unit of Inquiry, students have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving and protecting our plant life. They have been inspired to take action in their own lives to promote sustainability and conservation.

A Journey Through Time: Exploring the Migration Museum

In Week 9, the Year 6 students visited the Migration Museum, where they explored the Central Idea that ‘human migration is a response to challenges, risks and opportunities.’ Through engaging exhibits and personal stories, students learned about the various reasons people migrate, such as escaping conflict, seeking better opportunities, and reuniting with loved ones. The visit allowed students to connect with real-life experiences of migrants, deepening their understanding of the emotional and physical challenges they face. Reflecting on the visit, students gained a greater appreciation of migration’s impact on individuals and societies, reinforcing the relevance of this topic in today’s world.
