After more than 8 years of exemplary service, Principal Julia Shea has announced that she will be farewelling St Peter’s Girls’ School to accept a new role as Principal of Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) in Melbourne at the start of 2023.
Throughout almost 130 years of excellence in education, Saints Girls has never been in a better position, and we thank Julia for her immense contribution to this. Our girls have continued the School’s tradition of academic success, achieving outstanding results year after year. Indeed, Julia has experienced the vast benefits of an all-girls’ education from a parent’s perspective as she watched her three daughters thrive during their Saints Girls’ journey.
As a wider leadership and governance team, we have remained committed to our collective vision for St Peter’s Girls’ School including a Master Plan which has transformed facilities across the campus, and the School’s Strategic Plan with highlights including our #EMPOWHER wellbeing platform, our Career.Ready program, and now, our Leadership Matters initiative. Together, these plans have produced world-class learning spaces and programs tailor-made for our girls, supporting them through their schooling years and beyond as they become women of character and influence.
Of course, we simply could not achieve our vision without our talented and dedicated staff. Therefore, we also commend Julia for her commitment to supporting our staff in the staunch pursuit of continuous improvement through her passionate belief that education should be a lifelong companion.
Julia’s appointment to MLC, one of the largest girls’ schools in the southern hemisphere, is something we can all take great pride in as it reflects both Julia’s credentials and the stead in which our School is held as another global leader in girls’ education.
Julia says, ‘Leading St Peter’s Girls’ School has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Alongside our incredible staff, it has been so rewarding to witness the profound impact of all-girls’ education, and our amazing students have made each and every day a joy to come to work.’
We have no doubt that Julia and her daughters will maintain a lifelong connection to the School; as Julia has said on many occasions, ‘Once a Saints Girl, always a Saints Girl.’ We wish them all the happiness, and are particularly pleased for Julia as she will be in the same city as her mother, sister and extended family, including her beloved Hawthorn Football Club!
In the meantime, we will enjoy Julia’s continued contribution and assistance to ensure a seamless transition to the next chapter of our remarkable School, and will share opportunities later in the year where we can celebrate her achievements as a community.
A comprehensive recruitment process is being initiated, and we look forward to appointing our next Principal to lift Saints Girls to even greater heights.

From Our Principal
As you’d imagine, yesterday was a day of mixed emotions. The last 8 and a half years have been filled with many precious moments and amazing highlights, so the decision to move on has not been an easy one. I’m so proud of what we have achieved together for our girls – the consolidation of a truly values-based, holistic, world-class education.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by an incredible team of people on a daily basis. Our teachers have a drive, passion and determination that is underpinned by skill, knowledge and empathy, and I’m very grateful for their outstanding dedication and professionalism. All that we offer would not be possible without our unsung heroes, the non-teaching staff who sit in the background, yet who we know embody and live the values that define Saints Girls. I’ve been blessed to work within a Senior Leadership Team with extraordinary expertise in the delivery of quality girls’ education. And I’ve been privileged to work with a Board that has encouraged me to be creative and take risks, and dare to dream of what may be. And on the back of those musings, the School has been transformed, not just in terms of facilities but the many programs now on offer.
But it’s the girls who make this School. Their fundamental optimism, their courage to take the initiative, the fact that they dare to lead is what sets us apart. Their desire to continually challenge themselves and meet their own personal goals is truly infectious, and drives each and every one of us to also constantly improve. Quite rightly, we spend time celebrating our high flyers. Yes, the Year 12 median ATAR remains an impressive statistic, and the external results in sport, the Creative Arts, public speaking and the like have been nothing short of phenomenal in recent years. But here, it’s not just the ‘top’ results that are of interest to us. It’s important to acknowledge the Year 4 student whose pre and post comprehension testing has seen her jump from the 47th to the 66th percentile. It’s about the C Grade Netball team who fought hard all season and finally secured their first win. It’s about the Year 8 girl who summoned up the courage to join a Debating team and spoke more eloquently each time she took to the floor. Amidst all the strategy and building works, we mustn’t lose sight of why we made those plans – the reason we’re here – to provide an environment where every girl can be the best version of herself. And I hope that under my leadership, Saints Girls has been that place.
And I’m not finished yet! With over a semester to go, there is still much to be done. I look forward to continuing to work with you all in the months ahead, and of course, facilitating a smooth transition to the person fortunate enough to be appointed the next Principal of St Peter’s Girls’ School.
Important Notice – Face Masks in Schools
The State Government has announced that the requirement for students in Years 3 to 12 and adults to wear face masks indoors in schools, preschools, and children’s centres will be lifted from Monday.
However, please note that face masks will continue to be required for close contacts aged 12+ years as per the SA Health close contact guidelines.
In addition, the government has advised that the requirement should be reactivated for students in Years 7 to 12 and adults school-wide for a 14-day period where COVID transmission reaches the following thresholds:
• An individual class reports 10 cases or above over 7 days; and/or
• A school reports 5 classes with 5 cases or more over 7 days
The Department for Education continues to strongly recommend face masks for all adults – including visitors and parents – while indoors, except when teaching or interacting with children, and for students in Years 3 to 12 while indoors.

Rotary Honour Music to the Ears
Congratulations to Samantha Keough and Lauren Parker, both Year 11 students completing Year 12 Music, who performed at the Rotary Club of St Peters’ Music Awards Night.
Both girls were nominated for the awards based on their high level of musical proficiency, their involvement in musical ensembles and/or programs both inside and/or outside of the School, and for their ongoing dedication and commitment to their art form.
They performed admirably and were awarded $200 in prize money to further their musical development.

Upcoming Arts Extravaganzas!
It’s a very busy Arts season at Saints Girls right now. Last week, I went to see the Senior Drama Production, The Eyes of Her Beholder. Yet again, the exceptional quality of the students’ work, both on and off stage, astounded me. Next Thursday evening, we celebrate the Stage 2 Dancers’ own choreography as they present CREATE, and then in Week 6, we celebrate the Performing Arts Collaboration FUSION.
CREATE – SACE Dance Performance
The Stage 2 Dancers have been working diligently to create their own dance for an assessment to be showcased at CREATE. This individual task involves the girls choosing an area of focus, such as a social or political event, to form their dance around. Each girl was able to select external dancers or use themselves to be a part of their dance.
My chosen theme for this task is based on the suffragettes, exploring the history of women’s rights, focusing on gender discrimination and how time has progressed to where we are now. In order to cover all aspects of the protests and the suffragette movement, I had to conduct extensive research to develop my knowledge, which aided in the creation of my movements.
Working on our pieces, we drew inspiration from artists such as Rafael Bonachela to create authentic and organic choreography to include in our dance. All of the girls involved, particularly those in the dances, are to be commended and congratulated on their efforts and contribution to this task. I can speak on behalf of us all that your participation and collaboration is appreciated.

FUSION – Performing Arts Collaboration
The hallways at school are buzzing with excitement for the arrival of FUSION! Every second year is the School Musical extravaganza, but this year, after the success of A Chorus Line in 2021, I wanted to offer a small scale but equally as rewarding Performing Arts opportunity to our students, of whom so many are lovers of the stage! In conversation with Sari Noble, we decided to join forces and combine the Stage 1 Music Performance with ensemble dance pieces. Hence the title FUSION was born – a mixture of live music and singing with dance in such a huge variety of styles including ballet, jazz, musical theatre, tap and contemporary.
As Performing Arts teachers, we are so lucky to be able to work with girls who come with different experiences but all love to sing and dance. This is something that truly brings students together, including across the year levels. Being involved in this project has been no easy feat due to the impact of COVID which has made it difficult to rehearse with a full cast. Nevertheless, I am extremely proud of what we have achieved as a team and cannot wait for the girls to perform for a live and enthusiastic audience on Friday 10 June at 7pm in the Arts Centre.

Reconciliation Week in Our ELC
In preparation for Reconciliation Week, our ELC children have been taking every opportunity to immerse themselves in Kaurna culture, including daily walks through Ferguson Park, observing nature, sharing traditional stories and strengthening their connections to the Kaurna Yarta (land).
Cultures Combine for Languages Week
We kicked off Languages Week on Monday with awards in Assembly for the Australian Computational and Linguistics Olympiad (OzCLO) and the Education Perfect Languages Championships. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate our students’ external success in Languages.
Lunchtime on Monday saw the first of our Languages Week activities, with some Spanish dancing on the steps of the Arts Centre. The Year 11 and 12 Spanish students led girls in dances to the rhythms of salsa, merengue, pop music and rumba flamenca. Afterwards, they cooled down by playing a Spanish board game called Loteria and card games using Spanish cards.
On Tuesday at lunch, the Year 11 and 12 Japanese students taught the Junior School girls some origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. They loved creating a variety of animals including dogs, foxes and rabbits. Some girls also tried their hand at folding a crane, which is the most iconic of the origami shapes.
While we were unable to proceed with our planned game of pétanque (French bowls) on the Oval due to the rain, we did play some French pop music on the Middle School Deck and had some students tapping along. A few girls even danced!
Staff Morning Tea
The Languages Faculty staff held a delightful ‘Thank you/Arigatou/Merci/Xie xie/Gracias’ morning tea for all staff on Wednesday at Recess, bringing in yummy treats from different cultures as a way of thanking everyone for their support of Languages at Saints Girls. Staff were treated to a delicious feast of dumplings, fortune cookies, lamingtons, croissants, macarons, rice crackers and much more.
Yesterday, the Junior School girls participated in Chinese Square Dancing at lunchtime. Our talented Year 9s performed some routines first and then all the girls danced to various Chinese songs, both children’s songs and traditional pieces.
Today saw the close of Languages Week which involved lunchtime videos of Disney songs sung in a variety of languages. The Junior School girls were captivated to hear some of their favourite songs in different languages and it was a fitting end to a week of celebration of Languages at Saints Girls.

Saints in Benevolent Breakfast Boost
Bright and early on a recent Tuesday morning, a group of Year 10 Kennion girls jumped on a school bus with a burst of excitement, heading to a primary school in Adelaide’s north-western suburbs to take part in the KickStart for Kids program. The not-for-profit organisation helps disadvantaged school children achieve positive educational outcomes and increased self-esteem by providing over 50,000 breakfasts and 10,000 lunches per week to kids across 350 schools in South Australia.
As part of their Service Learning, Zoe, Dani and Emilia helped out with food preparation and serving to the many hungry students. The girls did a fantastic job in providing the students a delicious breakfast and warm conversation.

Global Thinking at IB Expo
Last Tuesday, the annual IB Expo was held in the Middle School, which was attended by students, parents and members of the Saints Girls’ community interested in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
A group of Year 11, Year 12 and IB graduate volunteers donned the ‘Ask me about IB’ t-shirts and became IB ambassadors!
During this expo, we were able to converse with many aspiring IB students and their parents and share our views on the programme. We also discussed our thought processes behind our subject selections and answered any questions. In the past, this expo helped me to better understand the inner workings of the IBDP, and thus it was very rewarding to pass this same sentiment along to others who are now in the same position I was. It was a very successful night and I look forward to next year’s expo!

Saints Girls Saluted at SACE Ceremony
A huge shoutout to all students recognised during the SACE Merit Ceremony at Government House last week, including these amazing Saints Girls!
2021 Dux of the School Cheri Wong (right) recorded an ATAR of 99.90 and a Merit in Physics alongside earlier Merits in Music Performance – Ensemble and Solo. She was also among a select group of students to receive the prestigious Governor of South Australia Commendation – Excellence Award.
Chi Chi Zhao, as a Year 11 student, achieved Merits in Mathematical Methods, Modern History and Research Project in addition to the Merit she received for Stage 2 Biology as a Year 10 student. Chi Chi was also awarded the Annie Montgomerie Martin Prize for the most outstanding achievement by a student in Stage 2 Modern History in 2021.

Year 4 Campers Head for the Hills
With camps resuming from Week 3, it meant that our Year 4 students were able to attend their school camp at Woodhouse Activity Centre, with three days of adventures. The program consisted of a range of group and personal development activities facilitated by Active Ed Outdoor Education. Through these fun experiences, students developed important personal and social skills such as being a good team player, channeling a growth mind-set and building resilience through persisting with challenges.
The girls enjoyed wrapping fish in clay to be baked and then shared, orienteering activities, overcoming obstacles on Challenge Hill and cultural hip-hop dancing.
As a special treat on their overnight stay, they enjoyed a movie and melted marshmallow smores! The Year 4s had a fantastic experience, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Waste Not, Want Not on Year 2 Outing
Our Year 2 students visited the KESAB Waste and Recycle Centre last Friday to see where our rubbish goes and how it is managed and sorted. They were led on a tour through the Education Centre at Wingfield to watch how organic waste is recycled. Every day, the site collects tonnes of wooden pallets to turn into bark mulch for gardens and play spaces, and organic green waste is composted then sold back to landscapers, councils and backyard gardeners. Even concrete from building sites is recycled into gravel for landscaping.
KESAB also collects and manages items for landfill, hard rubbish and other recycling. It was easy to see how our actions at home could make a big difference to reducing the amount of landfill and reusing many resources that are often thrown out.
The girls worked in small groups to find out how recycled materials are sorted using the trummel (a firm favourite!). Large heavy items are rotated through the drum all the way to the end, but the smaller, lighter materials fall out along the way making the sorting process easier. The girls sorted household waste items and identified which could be recycled and where, including e-waste, clothing, toys, soft plastics and composting. It was amazing to see how little we needed to send to landfill! Our favourite saying is that, ‘If it grows it goes…in the green bin!’ We also discovered that by reducing the amount of organic matter in landfill, we reduce the amount of methane produced, and this makes a big, positive difference for our world.
We are looking forward to finding out more as we become bin-ninjas and reduce our waste!

Continuous Reporting at Saints Girls
I take this opportunity to remind you about the Continuous Reporting system that we operate for Middle and Senior School students. A number of years ago, we moved away from including subject comments in full reports, and instead, we created online Continuous Reporting pages that parents can access via myLink.
Clicking on the ‘Marks’ tiles under ‘Class Contacts’ in myLink takes you to Continuous Reporting pages that contain the summative feedback that has been released at that point for the students in those classes. Summative feedback is the feedback students receive at the end of an assignment, and usually includes a comment and a grade.
Continuous Reporting, in essence, is teachers providing regular feedback on a student’s progress, rather than waiting until the end of a semester and then writing a subject comment in a report.
Parents wishing to access all the information available in Canvas, our Learning Management System, can do so by clicking the subject name in myLink. Canvas contains subject resources, subject overview information and formative assessment details and feedback.
I encourage you to visit these pages now that we are a substantial way through Semester 1; they will provide you with up-to-date, task-specific feedback that will indicate how your daughter is progressing. Full reports in the now-familiar format will follow in due course at the end of the term (except for Year 12 students, who received a full report at the end of Term 1).

Junior School Book Fair
Dive into reading next week at the annual Junior School Scholastic Book Fair! This pop-up bookshop event is a wonderful opportunity for students to purchase books to take home whilst also supporting a very important cause. Funds raised will go towards the ‘Solar Buddy Light Up Vanuatu’ Service Learning Initiative.

The Year 10 Selwyn Home Group is running a bake sale on Friday of Week 6 (10 June) to raise money for our House Charity, The Smith Family. The organisation creates opportunities for disadvantaged Australian children and their families by supporting education.
We are selling delicious baked goods such as cupcakes, brownies, doughnuts and more. Prices range from 50c to $3.

Kilburn House Charity Day – Sausage Sizzle
On Friday of Week 6, the Year 10 Kilburn girls will be running a sausage sizzle to raise money for our House Charity, Treasure Boxes. This organisation helps people from all walks of life who are experiencing poverty, domestic violence or homelessness.
Sausages with bread and soft drinks will be sold for $2 each and juice boxes for $1. Soft drinks are only available for Years 3 – 12. We will also be offering a vegetarian option, gluten-free bread will be available (at no additional cost), and we’ll have a meal deal consisting of one sausage with bread and a drink for the total of $3.

Nude Food Tuesdays
The Environment Club is encouraging all Saints Girls to minimise their plastic usage, especially in the packaging of their recess and lunch. Many of us pack our recess and lunch in zip lock bags and cling wrap. But the issue with this is that we use these once and then toss them into the bin. These plastics are not biodegradable, and over many years will simply break down into microplastics contaminating our water sources and even our food.
So, to decrease this impact, the Environment Club is inviting everyone to participate in Nude Food Tuesdays. On this day, we ask that students’ lunch and recess are not packaged in single use plastic and are instead packed in other items such as containers, beeswax wraps or even multi-use silicon bags.
If everyone participates, the amount of plastic which the School contributes to landfill will decrease greatly, thus benefitting our environment. You can even do this every day if you are extra keen to help our environment!
Piano Eisteddfod – Coming Soon!
On Thursday 16 June in Week 7 of Term 2, the Arts Department will hold St Peter’s Girls’ Piano Eisteddfod. It is open to all Junior and Middle School students who play piano. Parents are welcome to attend, and the time of each student’s performance will be communicated to families.
Girls will have the opportunity to perform a piece to a panel of judges, who will critique their performance based on accuracy, technique and musicality for their specific music level. This is a great opportunity for girls to perform in a supportive environment and receive some valuable feedback.
Girls are asked to play one piece that best displays their musicality and technical ability at their own musical level. There will be no minimum or maximum time limit. While the Eisteddfod provides our top piano players with a platform to perform, the aim is to give performers of all levels the opportunity to participate.
A Piano Recital will be held at 6pm on Thursday 23 June. Students will be chosen from the Eisteddfod performers who show confidence and a high level of musicianship. Selected recital students will be notified by the beginning of Week 8.
If your daughter would like to be involved, please fill out and return the Piano Eisteddfod consent form by next Friday June 3. Girls can collect the form from the Arts Office or you can download it via the link below. Students will later receive their time slot to perform in the Eisteddfod.

SA Health has advised that asymptomatic COVID-19 close contacts no longer need to quarantine. Therefore, asymptomatic children and students can attend school or ELC despite being a close contact, provided they undertake 5 RATs over the subsequent 7 days and receive negative results.
Please also be reminded of these vital requirements:
Should your child develop any symptoms, even mild ones, they must not attend school or ELC and should be tested for COVID-19. They require a PCR test with receipt of a negative result and resolution of symptoms before return to school/ELC can be considered. Students who have previously tested positive and have completed isolation in the past 12 weeks do not need to undertake testing.
If your child tests positive to COVID-19, notify us immediately. Please also advise the type of test (RAT/PCR), the date your child’s test was taken and the date symptoms started (if no symptoms, note ‘asymptomatic’).

2nd Visit Reminder for Parents of Year 10 Students – Tuesday 14 June

• 2nd dose of the Meningococcal B vaccine (Men B), BEXSERO
A reminder to parents: Students in Year 10 are offered two free vaccines 2 months apart to be fully vaccinated against Meningococcal B. It is important that your child is present at school on the day when EHA will be providing second doses.
Please notify EHA if:
• Your child has already started the above program with another provider
• You wish to withdraw your consent
• Your child’s medical condition has changed
Tips for the day of immunisation:
• Encourage your child to have a good breakfast and recess on the morning of immunisations
• Wear sports uniforms to aid easy access to the upper arm and avoid unnecessarily exposing yourself if clothing needs to be removed/undone
• Encourage your child to keep their arms moving and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Following the first three weeks of trials and trainings, we are excited to see games commence and are looking forward to supporting our girls. This season sees Soccer on a Wednesday, Aussie Rules on a Friday, and Badminton, Hockey and Netball on a Saturday morning. Additionally, we also have Junior Netball on a Wednesday and Junior Hockey on a Friday. With plenty of games happening and restrictions easing, we would love to see as many families, friends and supporters at our girls’ games. Their work rate and passion deserve our support!

Year 5: Saints White (11) v Wilderness (8)
Year 5 White played a great game against Wilderness. Charlotte and ‘Wizzy’ were terrific together in the attacking end, helping the ball flow down court. Samiya and Clare were fabulous in defence, turning over many balls. A big thank you to the girls from the other Year 5 team who filled in. The girls’ skills are already improving, and I am keen to watch them grow as netball players. – Jess (Coach)
Year 6: Saints White (7) v Saints Blue (18)
Year 6 White played an awesome team game. Caitlyn and Maggie in mid-court moved the ball down to Olive and Sylvie with their accurate shooting, and Beatrice, Leila and Vienna were strong in defence rebounding and intercepting. Well done girls. – Karen (Coach)
Year 6 Blue also had a great match, with both teams showing their developing skills, real commitment on the court and true Saints’ spirit. The score didn’t reflect how close the game was, with both teams really challenging each other. This was demonstrated by April and Maisy who took on board coaching tips and applied them directly to their game. It’s wonderful to see all the girls improving each week. – Cimone (Coach)
Under 11: Saints (6) v Golden Grove Lutheran Primary School (2)
The girls had yet another fantastic game. Ava Bartlett and Christie Psaromatis were our goalies and they both made some top saves. Grace Marshall had an amazing game and did especially well to fight for ground balls. Our scorers were Sophia Baker (1), Grace Marshall (2), Maddie Romeo (1), Juliette Tang (1) and Violet Tulloch (1). Great game girls, I am so proud! – Dani Cox (Captain)
Last night, our Swim Squad had a late one in the pool at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, competing in the SSSA Division 1 Swimming Championships. On a day that saw four of our girls come down with illness, I was particularly impressed with the attitudes of our swimmers who took the challenge in their stride, filling every race, competing up in age groups and swimming less familiar strokes. Following success in the final race of the meet, where our swimmers took out the Open 4x50m Relay, I was proud to hear that Saints Girls finished 4th overall, testament to their ‘give it a go’ attitude.
At the recent Athletics SA Awards, Charlotte McAuliffe was named the U16 Female Athlete of the Year for the 2021/22 Track and Field season. In addition, she was nominated in the Best Female Sprinter and Most Promising Multi Eventer categories.
Another talented Saints Girl, Elodie de Wit was nominated in the U14 Female Athlete of the Year for the 2021 Winter Road, Cross Country and Walks category.
