Young Scientists Shine in the Oliphant Science Awards!
This year, St Peter’s Girls’ School showcased their incredible science skills across a range of disciplines at the Oliphant Science Awards. Students from Reception to Year 10 submitted 31 entries, with at least one project represented in every individual category. All projects were proudly displayed at Science Alive at the Adelaide Showgrounds in early August.
The Awards are South Australia’s largest science competition, held annually since 1981, with the aim of encouraging inclusivity and curiosity in science. Many of us fondly remember the thrill of choosing and creating our own projects for this event!
This year, the School will celebrate two prize winners and will be recognised at the official presentation ceremony in October. This includes:
- Genevieve Sinclair (Year 4) for her poster on the Camouflage on the Pygmy Seahorse
- Zoe Curtis (Year 8) for her photography project titled ‘The Night Sky – To Infinity and Beyond’
In addition, several students received Highly Commended awards:
- Grace Ooi (Year 6) – poster and multimedia entries
- Elizabeth Sinclair (Year 6) – poster
- Yoland Wang (Year 8) – poster
- Mia Yang – (Year 3) – crystals
- Zoe Curtis (Year 8) – board game
Congratulations to all the girls for their hard work, enthusiasm and passion. It is wonderful to see their confidence grow as they explore a diverse range of scientific ideas.
A big thank you also goes to the parents for their support – from helping with preparation, assisting with delivery projects and organising projects at home. These achievements would not be possible without you!
If you missed seeing the projects in person, a Virtual Open Day will be held later this month (details to come). One highlight not to be missed is Grace Ooi’s multimedia presentation on the mechanics of tennis. Check it out below.
Looking ahead, categories and topics for the 2026 Oliphant Science Awards will be announced in December – so it might be time to start planning your next big idea!
