SACE & IB Dance Performance – ICONS

ICONS, showcasing the superb talent of the Year 9 to 12 dancers, was presented to audiences last week, leaving a lasting impression on all who saw it. From the soul-stirring power of Nina Simone to the electrifying energy of Tina Turner, the boundary-pushing boldness of Madonna, the distinctive artistry of Annie Lennox, the fearless creativity of Lady Gaga, and the commanding presence of Beyoncé, we celebrated icons who have shaped not only the sound of their eras but also the cultural conversations of their time.

Additionally, through dance we honoured women who have changed the world not only through words and actions but also through their unwavering courage. From the Suffragettes who fought tirelessly for women’s right to vote, to Malala Yousafzai who continues to champion education for girls, to Greta Thunberg whose voice ignited a global climate movement and Wonder Woman as a symbol of female empowerment—these figures have inspired generations to reimagine what is possible and their stories were brought to life on the stage through the power of dance.

Our students performed with sensitivity, power, intensity, energy and vulnerability. It was a mixing pot of emotions and dance styles spanning Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary and Hip Hop. I could not have been prouder of the efforts and commitment of every single dancer on the stage, especially the Stage 2 and IB class of 2025.

A Memorable Experience with the South Australian Honours Choir

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the South Australian Honours Choir, a selective ensemble that I was lucky enough to be chosen to participate in. It brought together passionate young singers from across the state to work with highly respected conductors and musical directors from South Australia including Tertiary conductor Carl Crossin.

Over five weeks, we had four intensive Sunday rehearsals, each lasting six hours. These sessions were both challenging and rewarding, and they helped forge strong connections between choir members—many of whom I wouldn’t have met otherwise. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many people who share a deep love for singing.

Our dress rehearsal took place on Wednesday 27 August, at the beautiful Elder Hall at the Adelaide Conservatorium—my first time performing in the space. We had the chance to run through our repertoire and hear performances by the Festival Statesmen Chorus, Aurora Vocal Ensemble, and Blindside Quartet. Their performances were absolutely stunning, and they gave us a glimpse of what’s possible in the world of vocal music.

The main event, Voices of Adelaide, was held on Friday 29 August. The concert was an unforgettable experience, filled with energy, emotion, and community. One of the highlights for me was getting to sing a solo—in Spanish, no less—which thankfully went smoothly. Another standout moment was joining a barbershop tag with the Blindside Quartet after the show, which was both fun and unforgettable.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of the experience was performing in a Elder Hall alongside new friends who share my passion. Being part of the South Australian Honours Choir was an amazing opportunity, and it’s one I’ll always treasure.
