Saints Knockout Success!

On Wednesday 28 August, three teams competed in Finals Day of the School Sport SA Statewide Championships. Our Years 9/10 Netball team, Open Netball team and Badminton teams had all earned the right to play off for top honours in the state in their respective sports.

Our Badminton girls, Captain Agnes Li, Abbie An, Shamonti Munir, Olivia Ng, Valerie Ng and Caitlyn Sam-Ling, ventured to Adelaide Badminton Centre with coaches Marco and Justin to compete against Woodcroft College, Glenunga International High School and Parafield Gardens High School in both singles and doubles. We had strong wins against Woodcroft and Parafield Gardens but found the might of Glenunga a bit too much, eventually coming away with the silver medal. It was a fantastic effort from our girls, all of whom will be eligible to play in this competition again in 2025.

Our Netball teams headed to Netball SA Stadium and played three minor round matches and a final. Our Years 9/10 narrowly went down to Unity College by three goals, they then had losses to both Kapunda High School (gold medal winners) and Kingston SE High School (silver medal winners).

They had the opportunity to take on Unity College a second time in the 3 vs 4 play-off where they put on a great show and came away with the win! A great way for our girls and coaches to finish the day.

The team had a few changes to their lineup, as three girls who’d played in the minor rounds (Isobel McArthur, Grace Jones and Mia Bennett) played in the Open team. Coming away with third place is a credit to the entire team – Madeleine Andrejewskis, Annabel Bamford, Laurie Doko Tchatoka, Lexie Fishlock, Kay Jang, Wei Ning Khoo, Lucy Lowry, Zoe McArthur, Alyssa Piantedosi, Lucy Tulloch and Imogen Wallace.

Our Open team, lead by Captain Mathilda Thomas, had a strong start to the day taking care of Modbury High School by seven goals. They took on Woodcroft College and started very slowly letting them get an 8-1 lead in the first half. This proved too much to pull back in the second half, going down by six. Our final match was against Millicent High School, who were yet to win a match. If we won this match, we would finish second and then get a chance to play off for the gold medal.

We started slowly and only had a small lead at half-time. The game see-sawed during the second half, but the girls managed to hold on, ahead by four goals at the final whistle. We got a second chance at Woodcroft, and we did not make the same mistakes as last time. We got off to a strong start and were seven goals up early in the second quarter. While we maintained control, Woodcroft kept coming. Going into the last quarter, Woodcroft managed to get within two goals, but our girls held on for the win taking out gold and the title of School Sport SA Statewide Netball Champions (Division 2) for 2024!

This is the first ever win for an Open team from Saints in this competition! A fantastic effort from the entire team made up of, Mathilda Thomas, Lilli Bennett, Mia Bennett, Shea Forster, Grace Jones, Carys Kinsella-White, Isobel McArthur, Olivia Reynolds, Anna Russell, Phoebe Russell, Ella Warrick and Emily Wildman and coach (Steph).

Ishana Putts her Best Foot Forward

Ishana Roy has progressed through to the SAPSASA State Finals in the Under 12 Girls Individual Golfing, after placing first in the mixed State Trials. Ishana finished one shot clear of the second-placed competitor and four shots ahead of the next-placed female. The State Finals will be held at the Westward Ho Golf Course in West Beach, on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 September, where Ishana is hoping to continue her hot streak with the clubs to earn selection for the Under 12 Nationals.

Well done, Ishana!
