Winter Conversations at Government House

Last week, Abbie, Mrs Smerdon and I attended an Environmental Leadership discussion that was a part of the Winter Conversation series at Government House. Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia was joined by Tim Jarvis AM, 2024 South Australian of the Year, and Tiahni Adamson, 2024 Young South Australian of the Year, to discuss environmental advocacy and South Australia’s efforts in addressing climate change.

This discussion was extremely insightful and opened our eyes to what South Australia, as well as communities, houses and individuals, are doing to improve and manage the surrounding environment through proactivity and taking initiative. Through Tim’s moving speech it became evident that as a school we could be doing so much more if everyone partakes even slightly. His words were a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals can have on a global stage. If one person picked up their rubbish, then another and then another, the difference it makes may not be visible individually but as a school community we would thrive. As an advocate for environmental and indigenous issues, Tiahni brought a fresh perspective to the discussion. She talked about inclusivity and the importance of integrating traditional indigenous knowledge with modern western environmental practices as well as the role of younger people in leading for a more environmentally friendly future.

One of the most valuable aspects of the event was the opportunity for the audience to engage with the speaker during the Q&A session. Her Excellency encouraged students to ask thought-provoking questions about a wide range of topics. Many students asked how they could make a difference in their daily lives and received a range of suggestions from Tim and Tiahni including reducing waste, being mindful of the consumption of foods that contribute to global warming, and supporting sustainable businesses and brands. This highlighted the role of education and awareness in fostering sustainability. The talk concluded with a speech from the keynote speaker, who urged everyone to take responsibility for the environment. Attending Winter Conversations on environmental leadership at Government House was an inspiring and educational experience that reinforced the need for a holistic approach to these environmental issues and the power of informed and engaged citizens in driving change as soon as possible.
